'Good Love' is a teaser offering from Mamas Gun that marks their return in style. This superb single is taken from the much anticipated new album ''Cure the Jones' which dropped in April. This UK-based soul outfit's fifth full length is another grand testament to their skills four years after their last. It carries on where great crooners like Bill Withers and Marvin Gaye left off with honeyed lead vocals from frontman Andy Platts, and irresistible funk-tinged guitar licks. This single is particularly uplifting that reminds us all to live each day and count ourselves lucky for the gift of life.

If you’re in the middle of a soul searching effort, we’re more than willing to point you in the right direction! ReGrooved has taken it upon itself to rerelease an otherwise lost treasure called Dancin’ in the Flames of Love by Regina James. This record first saw the light of day back in 1978 and was never reissued on vinyl.

Not only was this album the only one ever released by the singer, it seems that security has claimed her ever since. Only three singles under her name have come forth, one standalone 7” called ‘Gee Wiz Boy – backed with ‘My Man Is Coming Home’ - followed by ‘Alfie/Dancin’ in the Name of Love’ in support of her album. After the Maxi-Single ‘My Love (Ain't Gonna Never Let You Get Away)’ – again using ‘Dancin’ in the Name of Love’ for the B-side – she has literally vanished from any and all charts.

Her legacy lives on, though. Apart from the obscurity that surrounds both the record and its performer, another important detail makes this disc an important collector’s item. For it seems that Regina James was a protégé of none other than legendary songwriter, producer and vocalist Clarence Reid, who actually became (in)famous through his controversial XXX- rated stage persona Blowfly!

Many of the songs on Dancin’ in the Name of Love were written by him – including the title track. Catchy soul, funk and disco rhythms are given an extra dimension by various synthetic sound effects and James’ sultry vocals. She often uses narration to introduce a track and ease the listener into the subsequent grooviness.

Contained herein on this hallowed slab is a collection of recordings that were exceedingly obscure when first released but gained traction many years later thanks to hip and frugal DJs, producers, curators, and music supervisors.

Many of the gems on this album have been sampled hundreds of times by artists that have sold millions of records because they knew a good hook when they heard one - while a few are yet to be discovered by a wider audience.

We think the lesson learned is that there is an abundance of undiscovered music out there that is just below the radar, but by burrowing deep enough, one will find a wealth of buried treasure. Here's to the many hard working crate diggers that are willing to take the plunge.

Willie The Funkboss is one of the French Rap producers we respect. From his beginning as a DJ in 1991 to his sparks in production at the end of the 90's, everything he touched was good.
He began his career as the resident DJ of the only French club dedicated to Soul and Hip-Hop and started to produce remixes and hip-hop instrumentals before leaving for NYC to perfect his productions and DJ's, before returning to Lyon.
Upon his return, he puts his discoveries to good use by founding Le Gang Du Lyonnais with his friend Raf, a group that specialized in producing French rappers and singers, collaborating with the best of French urban artists. In 2003, they went gold with the single of 113 (Mafia K'1 Fry) "Au Summum".
Today, Will The Funkboss produces Hip-Hop, Soul, Nu-Disco and House on quality labels (Plaizir Musik, Smokin Beats, …), still in the groove!

The best records make you want to grab the steering wheel and feel the sunny coastal drive. Frank Ed’s unique blend of genres on his LP “Five x Five” does exactly this, melting G-funk, smoothie Rnb and NYC Disco a la Larry Levan, a genre he coined “Street Jazz”.

A Ghana expat inspired by the endearing levity of the sounds of Hilife along the Gold Coast, Frank Ed fuses downtempo keys and throbbing basslines on the opener “The Vibe”. “Groove Control” is a euphoric minimal disco gem teasing the padlocked grooves of Gwen Guthrie and the West End setting sun into a fiery Loleatta sample that sparks into a fiery vocal “You got me burning up”. Dervish vibraphones, inspired by the Jazz-Funk renaissance, mesmerize the interlude “Ghetto Strings”. Bootsy Collins' latest album 'Power of the One' was a real doozy and now it gets picked apart for some special 7"s on Japan's P-Vine. 'Hip-Hop Lollipop' (feat. Fantaazma) sees Bootsy doing what he does best, grooving, funking and bring some big fun to the funk. It is a remake of 'Club Funkateers' from the album with German Fantaazma that was first dropped on streaming services to mark Black History Month earlier this year. On the flip is 'Bewise' (FredWreck Remix) which was a Japan-exclusive CD bonus track when the album first dropped. It's a tight funk offering with West-coast production.

For an understanding of the past, you have to look to the future – or was it the other way round? No matter how you want to put it, some things are an aesthetic choice, and the meaning of style does not necessarily go hand in hand with the latest fashion fad or an incurable retromania. Chinaski’s debut (album under that name) on Running Back seems predestined to resume these discussions. Drenched in sepia colors and faded VHS tapes memories, fed by a science-fiction that never became a fact, essentially made with the ultramodern instruments of yesteryear (see back cover for further reference) that became redundant through their own relatives and a need to ensure efficiency (time, space, money), it’s either concept art, an ode to Disco Piu, a post card from the early days of Frankfurt’s Dorian Gray or the search and itch for a time machine.

All of the debate above is rendered useless by the title though: No Pop, No Fun! And those are the main musical reference points here: instrumental pop that you can dance to, pastel melodies that stick with you and fun frequencies. Downtempo ballads for video game characters in love meet cabriolet anthems and scooter songs. Perfectly composed and carefully made.

Output/Input was formed during lockdown by Melvin Lee Davis a Californian native and a skilled master bassist, composer, producer, and educator who is in high demand and is also Music Director for the “Queen of Funk” Chaka Khan.

Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy presents Balearic Breakfast Volume 1. An eleven track compilation of gloriously transcendent genre-hopping music inspired by one of the most listened to shows on Worldwide FM; most tracks impossible to find on vinyl.

How does one make a Balearic Breakfast?

You need to obviously start with one part blissful sunshine, rising over one part white sand, set to the sound of the sea looping back and forth. But what else - that perfect, idyllic backdrop aside - sums up that most important time of the day, specifically when spent right in the heart of the most glorious archipelago in the western hemisphere?

Luckily, DJ, broadcaster and producer Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy has perfected the recipe.

Colleen has been mixing together Balearic Breakfast shows on Worldwide FM for the last few years after starting in earnest during the first pandemic lockdown. Her shows offer a remedy to the pressures of the outside world; each is curated with the admirable aim of trying to “create a musical atmosphere for escape”, be it from bad weather or bad vibes.

Inspired by formative experiences at The Loft in NYC and on the terrace at Space, Colleen’s Balearic Breakfasts are endlessly eclectic and always inspiring, pulling together - in her words - a “hodge-podge of chill out, spiritual jazz, deep soul, percussive house, quirky disco, indie-dance and what may ‘traditionally’ be called ‘balearic’ (whatever that may be).” Basically, the kind of music you want to hear as the sun breaks over the horizon.

For her first Balearic Breakfast album (lovingly compiled for the ever-visionary Heavenly Recordings), Colleen has put together a set of songs that allow the listener to drift with her between myriad genres and join the unseen dots between them. The journey takes in shooting star ambient sounds, deep soulful hypno-house, ecstatic Neu-esque locked grooves, ethereal sea-shore jazz and Southern Hemisphere starlight disco, with tracks by artists such as Friendly Fires, Mildlife, Linkwood and Lady Blackbird (a track praised by Elton John, who called it “a groove that blows my mind”) and producers such as Andrew Weatherall (under his Asphodells alias), Ashley Beedle, Coyote, the late, great Phil Asher and Cosmo herself.

Flowing together, the tracks perfectly create that musical atmosphere for escape - a recipe for daydreaming yourself into a Balearic Breakfast state of mind. Tune in and leave the everyday behind. The sun’s rising overhead and the waves are at your feet, whatever time of day it is wherever you might be in the world.

Today sees Belgian-Caribbean provocateur Charlotte Adigéry and her long-term musical partner, Bolis Pupul announce their debut album Topical Dancer, due for release on March 4 2022 via Soulwax’s iconic label DEEWEE.
Cultural appropriation. Misogyny and racism. Social media vanity. Post-colonialism and political correctness. These are not talking points that you’d ordinarily hear on the dancefloor but Charlotte Adigéry and Bolis Pupul are ripping up the rulebook with their debut album Topical Dancer. The Ghent-based duo, who broke out with their 2019 Zandoli EP, are rare storytellers in electronic music: they take the temperature of the time and funnel them into their playful synth concoctions – never didactic and always with a knowing wink.

Their debut studio record – which cements them as a duo under both their names for the first time and is co-written and co-produced by Soulwax – is both a triumph of kaleidoscopic electro-pop and “a snapshot of how we think about pop culture in the 2020s.” It captures Charlotte and Bolis’s essence as musical collaborators and the conversations they’ve had over the past two years on tour, as well as their perspectives as Belgians with an immigrant background, Charlotte with Guadeloupean and French-Martinique ancestry and Bolis being of Chinese descent.

Beyond the album’s thematic heft, Topical Dancer reflects Charlotte and Bolis’s idiosyncratic sound: it’s thoughtful but it bangs. Their take on familiar genres is always off-kilter; songs sound undone or a little wonky; but these are nocturnal heaters to make the club throb. “We like to fuck things up a bit,” laughs Bolis. “We cringe when we feel like we're making something that already exists, so we're always looking for things to combine to make it sound not like a pop song, not like an R&B song, not a techno song. We’re always putting different worlds together. Charlotte and I get bored when things get too predictable.”

Topical Dancer is fizzing with ideas – there’s certainly no filler among its 13 tracks. But above all, perhaps, it has a restlessness, a desire not to be boxed in and to escape others’ narrow perceptions of who they are. It’s summarised by the refrain of their new single, ‘Blenda’: “Don’t sound like what I look like / Don’t look like what I sound like.” “One thing that always comes up,” says Bolis, “is that people perceive me as the producer, and Charlotte as just a singer. Or that being a Black artist means you should be making ‘urban’ music. Those kinds of boxes don’t feel good to us.”

‘Blenda’ in particular references how “I am a product of colonialism,” says Charlotte, “and I feel guilty for taking up space in a white country.” The song was inspired in part by Reni Eddo-Lodge’s book Why I’m Not Longer Talking To White People About Race. “It talks about the colonial past and post-colonial present in the UK,” Charlotte continues, “but that isn’t merely a British or American problem, Belgium is part of that as well.” She says that her home country is likewise “oblivious to a big part of its history” which “results in general ignorance and a lack of understanding and empathy towards Belgian inhabitants of immigrant descent.”

On Topical Dancer, it’s less about finger pointing or being dogmatic about all the things they speak about. It’s about emancipation through humour. “I don’t want to feel this heaviness on me,” says Charlotte. “These aren’t my crosses to bear. Topical Dancer is my way of freeing myself of these issues. And of having fun.”

Forgotten side project production from 1986, by Grammy award winning sound engineer Chris Lord Alge. Two versions of an oddball leftfield electro downtempo chugger and one previously unreleased patriotic monologue acompanied by heroic emotional piano - to be served with a sense of sarcasm.

Formed in Ohio, Dayton were formed by: David Shawn Sandridge (lead vocals / guitar) Chris Jones (lead vocals / keyboards / trumpet), formerly of the group Sun. Other members were: Dean Hummons (keyboards) Derrick Armstrong (vocals) and Jenny Douglas (vocals) who originally recorded as Magnum. Kevin Hurt (drums / percussion) Rachel Beavers (background vocals) Elaine Terry (background vocals) Rahni P. Harris (lead and background vocals, piano and synths) and Karen Harris Chappel (lead and background vocals) We chatted to Shawn Sandridge who presented us with a few previously unissued cuts. Many hitting the funk sound that was very en vogue around the 1980's. But our pick of the bunch was the smooth syncopated drum sound of "Sky's The Limit". It jumped out straight away and hit all the right buttons at SDE Hq . Criminally overlooked for some reason as an lp cut. With the release you get the full 6 mins version on the B-Side. Whilst we trimmed it down for a nice loud radio friendly cut on the A Side

Can we say this is a legendary album? Yes we can! Italo group ALEPH’s epic 1988 album “BLACK OUT“ finally get’s, after 33 years, the re-issue it deserves by Dutch High Fashion Music!

But not “just” a re-issue. This one only contains the extended or 12” versions of the original Aleph album tracks, including the famous Dutch remixes of Fire On The Moon and Fly To Me by Dutch Peter Vriends (previous released on Italoheat and Streetheat).

To optimize quality and to enjoy the re-mastering, done from the original master tapes, to the fullest, this one comes as a double 2LP album, 3 tracks per side, to guarantee maximum output and level. All tracks have been remastered by Dutch wizard Arjan Rietvink, which makes this album a not be be missed item for all Italo Disco lovers!

Across 15 eclectically brilliant tracks, Horse Meat Disco, which comprises Jim Stanton, James Hillard, Luke Howard, and Severino Panzetta expertly traverse through classic disco cuts, wonky dancefloor groovers, and silky smooth soul.

Originally compiled and released in 2018 as Time Capsule's 2nd release and sold out almost immediately. The 2022 repress comes with new liner notes design. It's been the longest out of stock release from TC catalogue so we are thrilled to answer the many requests we received to repress it. Only available on 45rpm loud cut 12" vinyl remastered by Tim Young at Metropolis Studios, UK.

Perhaps one of the most enigmatic of artists on the Rare Soul scene must be Flame N' King aka Oscar Wayne Richardson Jr, who ran his various labels independently since the mid ‘60s. It was a surprise when the group surfaced again with a fantastic uptempo New York dance track in 1976 on the tiny N.Y.C.S. records. "Ho Happy Day" found immediate favour with the Modern Soul crowd, but it took the next 30 years for it to eventually become a Modern Soul anthem and cross over to a wider audience.

These days "Ho Happy Day" can be heard at numerous venues across the world and is a bigger floor-filler now than it was back in the 1970s. We're delighted to finally re-issue this classic on the original N.Y.C.S. imprint and watch it find even more audiences in 2022. An original copy will cost circa £250 these days, so there's already a heavy demand for this long-awaited re-issue

A Franco-Italian production of the latest vinyl de-luxe of Ryan Paris, recently released in a strictly limited edition in three colors (yellow, spottled, fuchsia). On the side A of the EP we find ''Tarzan Boy'' (Baltimora) which peaked at # 2 for 5 weeks in Musicbox live France and the 80's remake of ''Always On My Mind'' (Pet Shop Boys). On the flip side the Club Mix Version and the 80s disco-club remake of ''Dream'' by P. Lion (# 8 also in Musicbox live France)- The release also contains the autographed postcard of the Italo-disco icon Ryan Paris (Dolce Vita) for all the aficionados of the fantastic music of the 80s.

Welcome to the 3rd and final release from the Roz Ryan studio reel discovery from 1980. Produced by the mighty Mike Theodore and Dennis Coffey their production skills and arrangements never fail to deliver, and they always throw in a breakdown to keep it funky. Roz Ryan is a household name within the u.s and had some great success in the uk with her hit on Mirage records entitled "Boy where have you been".On the A side we have another killer 2 step song called 'Love Changes" which was also covered by O.C Smith. The sultry silky vocals from Ms Ryan never fail to disappoint. Flip it over for "Funky Way To Treat Me". A Theo Coff production that has all those funky disco elements associated with the duo's output of the late 70's.

Another independent Rare Soul 7" which has shot up in price lately, is the brilliant and anthemic "Keep On Tryin'" by the curiously-named Fir-Ya, otherwise known as the backing band for Soul veteran George Perkins. Released on the tiny Star-Glow imprint from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, original copies are currently around the £300 mark and rising. Hopelessly obscure but such an incredible and uplifting record really does deserve to a reach a wider audience.

A nice socially conscious flip too with the soul searching "Crying In Iran". Expect significant action from Modern Soul and Rare Disco audiences alike and watch this feel-good anthem ignite the dance-floors again.

Wewantsounds is delighted to announce the release of Ziad Rahbani's cult classic "Houdou Nisbi," one of his most praised albums, released on the sought-after Lebanese label Relax-in. This release is an event as the album, recorded in 1984-85 at Rahbani's By-Pass studio, was only released in 1991 on cassette and CD and missed out on the vinyl format. Mixing arabic music with Funk, Jazz, Boogie and a touch of Brazilian music, it is considered a classic among Oriental groove fans, DJs and collectors around the world. Curated by Lebanese DJ and Journalist Ernesto Chahoud, the album is making its vinyl debut with original cassette artwork, audio remastered by Colorsound Studio in Paris and also a 2 page insert with a new introduction by Chahoud in English/French.
Ziad Rahbani is one of the giants of Arabic music and a cultural icon in the Middle East. The musician, pianist and producer is also a celebrated playwright and a political activist. Coming out of an illustrious artistic dynasty (his father, famous composer and musician Assi Rahbani, was in The Rahbani Brothers and his mother is the legendary Lebanese Diva, Fairuz), Ziad Rahbani released a string of key albums in the 70s that have since become cult among DJs and collectors.

Heavily influenced by Western music, Rahbani brought these influences to traditional Arabic music early one. 1978 saw the release of two key Rahbani albums, the Disco 12-inch ‘Abu Ali,’ one of the most sought-after Arabic albums on the international DJ scene and ‘Bennesbeh Labokra... Chou?’ also featured in many diggers' want-list.

Serving as musical director to his mother Fairuz, he produced some of her best albums including 'Maarifti Feek' recorded in 1984 at his Beirut studio, By Pass, bringing his blend of modern influences to her traditional sound. At the very same time, Rahbani started recording his own album at By Pass with the cream of Lebanese musicians including saxophonist Tewfic Farroukh, Guitarist Paul Dawani and percussionist Emile Boustani.

Bringing Funk, Boogie, Jazz Funk fusion and Brazilian music to the mix, Rahbani created a landmark album, 'Houdou Nisbi' now considered one of the best jazz funk albums from the Middle East. Featuring such cult tracks as 'Rouh Khabbir', a remake of the Crusaders' 'Soul Shadow' sung by Rahbani himself, the Modern Soul of 'Bisaraha' and the Brazilian flavoured 'For Sure', the album is both effortlessly groovy and steeped in Oriental music. Held as "one of Lebanon's best kept Musical treasures' by Ernesto Chahoud in his notes, the album is a certified Rahbani cult classic.

"Houdou Nisbi," which means "relatively calm", an expression used by news anchors on Lebanese TV to describe the mood during cease-fire in the civil war that went on between 1975 and 1990 - has been remastered for vinyl from the original masters by David Hachour at Coloursound Studio in Paris. The cassette artwork has faithfully been reproduced for vinyl release with an iconic woman supposedly going to party with her high-heel shoes during cease-fire in a war-battered beirut (an agit-prop cover in line with the political stances of Rahbani, a self proclaimed non-religious leftist). Wewantsounds is delighted to bring the first-ever vinyl release of this iconic album to the world, an event for all Middle Eastern music vinyl collectors and 80s funk & boogie lovers.
