Inspired by the teachings of The Earons (that's .22, .18, .33, .69 and .28 to the uninitiated, see for more background), a splinter group was formed earlier this year, with the express mission to bring back the message and connect it to a whole new audience. 'Land of Hunger' is given a 2012 Reconstruction from 'The Cosmologist', a sturdy rework performed by the mysteriously concealed outfit, who identify themselves only as .40, and .44. Whilst they are heavily influenced by Earons beliefs on positive energy, which they seek to share, .40 + .44 are quick to point out they have no links with the earlier incarnation from 28 years ago, but felt a compelling force to unearth it once more. The universe knows when the time is right, and frankly the original broadcast was just too good to not want to fashion a 2012 edit, so a new chapter begins....

The pace drops off on the flip to sub 100 BPM, and another gem is dusted off and re-built for the modern dancefloor. Benny Golson's 1978 slow jam 'I'm Always Dancing to the Music' enjoyed a huge revival on London's mid-eighties rare groove scene, and this stone cold classic, as the name implies, is hard to stand still to- the beat goes down and I start turnin'...

Meanwhile, in the real world, David Cameron's politics take us ever deeper into a 70's era depression with the Blues showing their true colours by putting rampant socially divisive individualism back on the agenda. These jams serve a timely reminder of our need for some Earons style Love and Positivity. It's gonna get tougher, but no matter how hard it gets, even in a Land of Hunger people are Always Dancing. Try as they might to switch the lights off at the party, they can't stop the music...

Under the Influence Records celebrate this fact with Cosmology vol 1, the first in an occasional series of vinyl reconstructions, released on limited edition, hand-stamped heavyweight colour vinyl; aimed at those who, in the age of easy access and information, still enjoy the forgotten pleasure that comes with seeking things out.

Produced by the acclaimed Arif Mardin, who also worked with such luminaries as Aretha Franklin, Esther Philips and Donny Hathway, this 1978 classic rides soulful disco-tinged waves of blissful strings, heady horns and cosmic guitars with a rich orchestral feel - no wonder this is a such a firm favourite on the Balearic scene with DJs in the know from Harvey to Phil Mison. Originally released on a promo-only 12' single with the same version on both sides, 'Tranquillo' is here backed by another essential sun-drenched gem from Ms. Simon - 'You Belong To Me'. A jazzy, breezy summer groover laced with gentle piano, soothing vocals and some amazing saxophone from virtuoso David Sanborn. Welcome chance to grab an affordable copy of this highly desirable 12'.

Leading the inter-play between instruments is a deep hypnotic bass that creates a throbbing atmosphere for spacy 70's keys and inter-galactic sound effects. Hiding in the background are funky drums and a lead guitar that dons a space suit goes exploring. Ready for blast off

'Make it mellow' is that warm-you-through Balearic bliss that this dynamic duo are masters of. A delicious edit, this encapsulates the sound of a lazy summer afternoon. Spacy synths and guitars interwoven throughout, the searingly syncopated solo shines in the spotlight. Complemented by chunky bass and soothing vocals that ease their way into your head, this epic summery edit rounds off this B Side beautifully.

Another top quality selection of wonderful sun-drenched obscurities from the Balearica camp. Kicking off with the brilliant instrumental version of Jago's 'I'm Going To Go' from 1983, this is Italo at its best with a super phat analogue B-line which sounds incredible on a big system. Massive on both the early Balearic scene as well as on the dance floors of Chicago and New York, this is an essential. Next up is the dreamy disco groove of Wolfgang Maus' 'Testimony' taken from his uber rare 1979 'Children Of The Universe' LP. Side B features the impossible to find but highly desirable 'It's Broken' by Bob Chance, an amazing nine minute slice of avantgarde disco rock grooviness that receives heavy rotation from DJs lucky enough to have found a copy like DJ Harvey, Rub & Tug and Soft Rocks. Finally rounding off this splendid compilation, you get the original Rolling Stones version of the Balearic favourite 'Heaven', back in demand recently after being covered by Kasper Bjorke. Excellent stuff!

Limited reissue of 'The Party Scene', a stone-cold electro funk classic 12' from 1983. The only release ever by the mega-talented Russell Brothers (what a shame!), the production on this ultra-rare Portrait cut is years ahead of its time, and no other early hip hop producers came near to making a sound as immense and interesting as this. The 12' contains the superb party-starting short and long versions featuring a grinding electro groove topped with hypnotic driving melodies and great vocals plus the masterful instrumental which is darkly atmospheric with its sparse instrumentation, pounding bass drums and ominously ticking hi-hats. Don't miss this!

A few years ago I took a journey to Europe searching for a new sound.

People along the journey had been telling me about this guy from Tropea, Italy called DJ Steve (named after his favorite musician, Stevie Wonder).
He's a butcher there by day, but at night he's the DJ at a club called Casablanca. I made my way to this tiny town in the south of Italy and found DJ Steve.
His 12 hour DJ sets opened my eyes. This guy was the real deal. He was playing dubplates, vinyl, cassettes, and reel-to-reel's. All special edits he had done over the years.
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
In late November of 2011 DJ Steve finally made his first visit outside of Italy and came to New York. He came on my Beats In Space radio show and blew everyone away. It was one of the most listened to mixes of the year. While he was in New York, I was able to record in a few of the dubplates of edits he had done. Those recordings are how we arrived at the release of "DJ Steve's Special Cuts #1 & #2". With this release we also started a new sub-label for Beats In Space Records. B.I.S. Records, Inc is for any of the edits or bootlegs we might come across. Expect to hear more from DJ Steve soon.

So what is After the void ..We Bang the Bomb of course with a lady in a thong surrounded by snakes and hand grenade's, obvious really! Having been away for some time it appears that a Light Sounds Dark spring is in the air. En route to their next destination (rumoured to be a dark subterranean world full of nasty mutants 'Danger electrified tracks' out this Summer) with arms out the window and the mothership roof down, it's full steam ahead and proper European dance music time.

Not really train spotting as before although a couple are a bit off piste like Malta's very own Ian Dury by the name of Iain Richardson rapping about sitting on a green bus! much more like it however are classic Italo covers of 'Big in Japan', 'Gloria', a wonderful new wave version of Falco's euro smash 'Der Kommissar' and The Thoughts massive German hit 'Wait a Long Time' sounding like some long lost Talk Talk record. Light Sounds Dark do some minor tweaking (going for that natural look) to big beast anthems Axodry's 'You' and Colme 111's 'You Take Me High' (early euro take on Chicago) and for lovers of something a bit more funky there's some groovy goings on from Kraut funksters Epsilon urging people to 'Leave The City' which might not be a bad idea if the water runs out.

A limited chance for you to get your hands on this achingly-rare Panda Records track 'People Hold On'. Originally released in 1984, this stylishly classy record feels like undiluted house brought to you from before house even existed! Super-tight production skills from Wuf Ticket's James Mason pull together a goosebump-inducing bassline, deeply hypnotic synths and tantalising handclaps topped off with Earl Flint's elegantly sexy, meltingly cool vocals to deliver a masterpiece in early 80s NYC groove. Backed with a much in-demand killer instrumental version, this record is almost impossible to find out there on the wax market. Killer electro house on quality remastered vinyl - an absolute must have. People don't hold on !!!

Hot on the heels of volume 12 and with a familiar Let's Get Lost face at the helm, volume 13 welcomes Jacques Renault aboard once more and he's jumped genres yet again! After the relentless house edits of his last LGL voyage this release sees him return to the familiar waters of synthesizer prodded orchestral disco for the first two tracks and a saxophone and choir led afrobeat gem to round things off.

The concept of climactic and chassis shaking is synonymous with Rayko. And his vision does not disappoint. It draws you in and layer by layer, this structurally more simplified midnight burner slowly but surely intensifies - through its reliance on chunky bass, trademark mid-point vocal introduction and heavy use of synths. It is both playful and a little bit naughty. Destination dance floor.

Time & Space Machine twist the grain and strip it back towards a more minimal mood with their inviting exploration. Whilst embracing the subtle elements of the original, this remix is quite transformational with its gracious representation and varying cultural influences. The clever use of vocal and instrumental interplay is particularly dreamy and enables the listener to feel as if this unfurls like sunrise. Atmosphere plus.

Greg Wilson personifies deep groove and his heady remix is all about its big, bad bass line. Opening with drum kicks that could send the neighbours into a tailspin, this is soon accompanied by flickering synths and haunting upper level harmonies. The chugging bass is complemented by the vocal introduction in the middle section and whilst grounding this somewhat, it also flies with an unmistakably sharp touch.

Rounding off this selection perfectly, Toby Tobias proves, once again, his capacity to take a track and make it his own with this stunning down-tempo remix. Tobias' interpretation offers an unassuming alternative. Seductive in its progression, it is a golden thread of lightness and beauty. The eloquently funky mood is enhanced by a more diverse selection of drums, gentle use of pads and trills. This is perfectly balanced with a waving bass line and a subtle, teasing vocal, ensuring that this is as smooth as silk and elegantly ethereal.

Very welcome remastered reissue of the ultra-rare 1982 cut 'You Can't Have It' from cult NYC boogie label TNT Unlimited Inc. Mixed by the legendary Tony Humphries, this excellent cut is hugely dancefloor-friendly featuring a massive feisty vocal performance along with some top bongo action and a killer groove. Backed with a superb dubbed-out instrumental version, this is a stone-cold killer and deserves a place in any serious boogie or funk collection. Essential!

Limited reissue of two disco-funk classics by 70s super-group - WAR, renowned for their masterful blending of soul, Latin, jazz, blues, reggae and rock influences. On the A side you'll find the 7.30 minute promo-only disco version of Cosmic groover 'Galaxy', a wonderful technicolour star-spangled space-hop of smooth horns and hooks, blasted into the outer-funkosphere by a deeply delicious phat bassline, devastatingly groovy piano riffs and great dubbed-out vocals. On the flip, we have the mighty 13-minute Loft classic 'City Country City', a subtle blues-influenced obscurity taken from 1972 album 'The World Is A Ghetto'. Riding high on a blissful sax solo and laced with hauntingly mellow strains of a harmonica, this epic tune takes you on a soulful smoky journey through a dreamy land of slo-mo jazz and disco. Top quality!

Since its inception in spring 2010 the Let's Get Lost label has been the standard bearer for high quality edits and reworks in crowded playing field of a genre. This super limited CD collects together some of their best output from the likes of KZA, Thomas Bullock, JD Twitch, Eddie C and many more.
Japanese only release with a mere 130 copies making their way to theses shores.

The excellent Lumberjacks In Hell imprint has served up some fine edits in its short lifespan to date, most notably from Chicago's Mutant Beat Dancer Traxx and the label's latest release turns to two other Windy City residents renowned for their collections and skills. Rahaan needs little introduction for the disco loving community with essential drops on Stillove4music, Disco Deviance and more, whilst Mr Sounds runs the excellent Bring The Heat website. This twelve is all about the A Side "Rainin Bleeding Boy" which puts a well loved UK EBM couple through the dub laden beatdown grinder - though DJs will get plenty of mileage out of both tracks on the B Side with "Flip Side" some supremely chopped up disco funk and "War I Declare" a stomping and heavily filtered bomb.

Coming through with a heavyweight release, Day By Day by Research complete with a Psychemagik remix.
Research were a post punk, industrial jazz funk band who formed in the early 80s supporting bands such as Material and Pigbag as well as playing sessions for the BBC and Womad.
They released one album, the still sought after 'Social Systems'. Recent interest in the band resulted in releases on Rong / DFA and Bearfunk. Their 2010 Reworks twelve-inch was awarded single of the week on Boomkat.
The Day By Day Dub is stripped back disco not disco that fuses live percussion, bass, guitars, drums, pads and vocals by Valerie Maxfield (Groove Armada / Freestylers) but with studio touches locking it down to a fierce groove. The tension builds until the Rhodes chords drop to give it some deep soul disco.
Psychemagik continue their purple patch with a floor heavy mix that mixes up disco and deep house but is all class.
They retain the original elements but add stabs, pads and bass and completely re-arrange it for dance floor impact.
Best buckle up for this one.
