The companion album to '24 Hours A Day - Ian Levine: The Disco Years' is this sterling collection of Ian
Levine's 1980s HI-NRG output - a scene in which Ian Levine was superbly qualified as he was the resident
DJ at London's No.1 Gay club, Heaven, throughout the 1980s, thus setting the musical agenda for the rest
of Europe throughout this period. Once again compiled by aficionado Simon White, 'Beating Faster - Ian
Levine: The Hi-NRG Years' once again collects the creme de la crème of Levine's HI-NRG releases between
1984-1990 including such in-demand and commercially difficult to find tracks like Miquel Brown's 'This Time
It's Real', Sadie Nine's 'Number One Lover', Seventh Avenue's 'Loves Gone Mad' and Norma Lewis's
'Surprise Me Tonight' among many other gems. As with the other volume, many of these tracks have been
generally unavailable on CD until now and certainly many of these mixes are making their CD debut for the
very first time too!
All tracks have been extensively re-mastered and sound the best that they've ever been. There is the usual
8 page booklet with sleeve notes by Simon White and a number of scans and photos, all superbly packaged
in a stylish 2CD pack with slipcase.

Es sollte sich als wahrer Glückfalls für Mando Diao herausstellen, als die Band irgendwann im Jahre 2011 einen gebrauchten Synthesizer der russischen Marke Aelita geschenkt bekam - ein hoch inspirierendes Instrument, mit dem man sich in den folgenden zwei Jahren immer wieder beschäftigte. Nachdem man als DJ schon jede Menge Erfahrungen in Europas angesagtesten Clubs gesammelt hatte, war der Synthesizer das ideale Hilfsmittel, um eine ganz neue, aufregende Art von Dancemusic zu produzieren.

Unendlich viel wurde bisher über Mando Diao in den Medien geschrieben. Über Schwedens großmäuligste Band, über schier endlose Touren, über den internationalen Erfolg und über die Bandmitglieder als Modeikonen. Der Weg von ihrem Albumdebüt Bring`em In, über den medialen Konkurrenzkrieg mit Kent und die meistgespielte Radiosingle 2009 war zwar lang und hart - aber vor allem war er ein echtes Abenteuer.

Aelita

Inspiriert von den unendlichen Möglichkeiten, die das Gerät eröffnete, machten sich Gustaf und Björn an die Arbeit. Angefangen bei pulsierenden Bässen, bis hin zu filigranen Arpeggios fügte das Songwriterduo elektronische Parts in bereits bestehendes Material ein und komponierte damit ganz neue Stücke. Bekannt als ausgemachte Electronic-, Dance- und HipHop-Enthusiasten, sowie als erfahrene DJs und Producer, eröffnete man sich ganze neue Dimensionen während einer Zusammenarbeit mit Björn Olsson. Gemeinsam schrieb man während zweier Songwriting-Sessions den Kern des - Aelita'-Materials im bandeigenen Månses Studio, in dem später auch die Basictracks komplettiert wurden.

Nach dem beispiellosen Erfolg ihres 2012er Albums Infruset in Schweden, gefolgt von dem ebenfalls erfolgreichen Debüt des Nebenprojekts Caligola, machte man sich wieder an die Arbeit zu Aelita. Während das neue Material Ende 2012 von Veronica Ferraro final abgemischt wurde, beschäftigte sich die Band eingehend mit den visuellen Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten und ihrer Umsetzung.

Die Vergangenheit

Mando Diaos bisherige Erfolgstatistik liest sich mehr als beeindruckend: Seit 2002 haben es die Skandinavier auf mittlerweile sechs Studioalben, eine B-Seiten-Sammlung, eine Best Of, sowie ein MTV Unplugged-Album gebracht, die weltweit mehr als 1,5 Millionen Mal über den Verkaufstresen gingen. Mit ihrem letzten, auf den Gedichten des schwedischen Poeten Gustaf Fröding basierenden Album Infruset avancierte die Band zum schwedischen Kulturphänomen: Insgesamt 17 Wochen hielten sich Mando Diao auf Platz 1 der Longplay-Charts und wurden mit vier Platin-Schallplatten ausgezeichnet. Bisher spielte das Sextett über 1.000 Shows in mehr als 30 Ländern und verzeichnet weit über sechs Millionen Views ihrer Videos auf YouTube. Während andere Genre-Bands kommen und gehen, beweisen sich Mando Diao immer wieder als konstante und höchst entwicklungsfreudige Größe innerhalb der Popmusik.

Schon seit Gründung sind Mando Diao ihrem eigenen Pfad, ihrer eigenen künstlerischen Vision und eigenen Interessen gefolgt. Ein Pfad, der die Band niemals nur geradeaus, sondern immer wieder auf bis dato unerforschtes Territorium geführt hat: Ob mit dem Folk-lastigen Never Seen The Light Of Day, ihrer Zusammenarbeit mit den HipHop-Produzenten The Salazar Brothers und dem daraus resultierenden Give Me Fire, oder zuletzt den über 100 Jahre alten Gedichten Gustaf Frödings auf Infruset.

Die Zukunft

Mit Aelita erscheint das 7. Studioalbum der Schweden. Mit dem ungeduldig erwarteten Nachfolger von Give Me Fire und dem anschließenden MTV Unplugged-Album im Gepäck werden sich Mando Diao endlich wieder auf europäischen und internationalen Bühnen zurückmelden. Mit Aelita demonstrieren Mando Diao einmal mehr ihren ausgesprochenen Facettenreichtum und ihre Wandlungsfähigkeit im Umgang mit ganz neuen Klängen - ein kraftvoller und detailverliebter Crossover aus neuen Technologien, Elektronik, Dance Music, Pop und Rock. Als besonderer Special Guest auf dem Album ist die 80er Jahre Keytar-Legende Jan Hammer (u.a. OST - Miami Vice') vertreten, alle Videos wurden von niemandem Geringeren als Tim Erem (u.a. Katy Perry) gedreht.

A Scorching Old School Latin Dance 12" from Jazzman Records

Daniel Grau has recorded eight legendary LPs between 1974 and 1983; all of them never available outside of Venezuela though. Born 1948 in Caracas the thoroughbred musician first and foremost was one of the most sought-after studio engineers in his country. Almost any respectable artist in Venezuela (Vytas Brenner, Aldemaro Romero, Aditus, La Misma Gente etc.) was at least once in the El Palacio De La Musica-Studios taking advantage of Daniel Grau's mastery.
Just for the fun of it Grau asked some of the musicians who frequented the studio on a regular basis to use the free studio time to record some own songs and compositions under the name of - La Orquestra De Daniel Grau'. The fist two albums from 1974 and 1976, released under this moniker, already display perfectly what an adept composer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bass and keyboards) Grau was and still is. The influences and references, which characterize his entire, short and Venezuela-only career, are unmistakeable: North American Fusion Jazz, orchestral Bossa Nova and Latin American funk in the sense of Eumir Deodato and Sérgio Mendes.
Daniel Grau's variety of musical styles doesn't end here though. At the end of the 1970's he moved more and more towards disco music and incorporated what we today all call Cosmic Disco. And it's exactly this scene, which started to become a worldwide movement about ten years ago, which embraces now the forgotten work by Grau and numbers his eight albums among the 'holy grails' of this genre. Sonar Kollektiv member Class Brieler was aware of this when he visited Caracas in 2012 as part of the cultural exchange programme by the prestigious Goethe Institute. Together with befriended Venezuelan DJ Trujillo all the stops were pulled to make Daniel Grau's music accessible to a worldwide audience. In close dialogue with the by-now 66-years-old Daniel Grau the show case compilation at
hand was compiled. As a CD release it encompasses 27 of the best tracks out off Grau's archive. The vinyl edition confines itself over two LPs to the 15 tracks that are the most danceable. On both formats you find a new composition ('To Night'). More than thirty years after his last official release Daniel Grau returns with 'To Night' and looks ahead confidently.

Number 4 from World Unknown arrives just in time to close 2011 out on a high. The party is now officially a roadblock and the label has already won all kinds of high friends in high places.

Last year's acclaimed Sea Power & Change EP, a melancholic project from the mind of celebrated Portuguese powerhouse Tiago, is now revisited through the lens of three essential ESP Institute artists. Side A gives us a take on Strange Fruit by our heroes Soft Rocks — a smacked up dub/boogie rendition leaving the beautifully dark mood intact whilst twisting the the rhythms toward the tough side. On side B, Secret Circuit (Eddie Ruscha of Laughing Light of Plenty, and soon to release his solo release for ESP) stuffs Wild Combination in his saddle and takes us for a ride through a futuristic version of the Wild West with a funky bassline and distant whistles, only to be rounded out by a blissed-out epic re-rendering of Yesterday Is Gone by Somberero Galaxy's Jonny Nash. Its a family affair.

Incredible double A sided reissue on tiny early eighties New York imprint Small Axe. Side A features the awesome boogie funk of 'Throwdown' by Larry Harris, a phat floor-filling monster which always changes hands for big bucks in auctions. On the flip we get another in-demand bomb - The Sparkles' 'Trying To Get Over', a superb soulful disco groover with great vocals and synth hooks. Originally released way back in '81 and produced by The Strikers' Darryl Gibbs, this killer cut still remains a firm favourite of many in the know disco DJs. Top stuff!

This new release from the Balearica camp keeps up the pressure with another incredible selection of sun-drenched rarities. Getting things started is an awesome extended edit of Loredana Berte's 'In Alto Mare' - a Balearic disco gem previously only available on a hard to find Italian 7' from 1980. Then picking up the pace, we get the great deep piano groove of Soul II Soul's 'Happiness (dub)' which received heavy rotation both in Ibiza and beyond. Chicago house legends Ten City keep things bubbling with the superb 10 minute mix of 'One Kiss Will Make It Better' - a floorfilling, slo-mo house groover with great horn sections, topped off with a wonderful vocal performance from Byron Stingily at his best. Finishing off this great compilation is an extended edit of the fantastic sitar-driven groove of Slim's 'Arabian Disco' previously only available as a mega-rare French 7' from 1977. Don't miss out!

Foot and Mouth up the ante and release 'Young Edits - Move Me Up EP', the perfect balearic soundtrack for the ensuing summer hi-jinks. Australian protégé, Luke Foskey, delivers four inspiring top drawer balearic re-edits of some familiar and not so familiar household classics. 'How We Walk On The Moon' is already a firm favourite of the year for Tim Sweeney these edits will find favour with lover's of Pocket Knife and Cousin Cole's work.

Broken-back balearic beat biscuits for the mind noodled generation. Perfect for sunrises, sunsets or campfires, expect to hear these beauties all over the summer, accompanied by obligatory, ubiquitous Cheshire cat grins all round. "Fill yer moonboot's up mate, we've got poncho's in space, I'm telling ya!"

Superb double A-sided 12' from TEC Records, reissuing two of the rarest and most sought-after tracks ever released on the tiny US disco label. First up is super-funky Cosmic groover 'J'Ouvert', from John Gibbs with The Jam Band, As you'd expect from the title, this track has more than a nod to Carnival a with tropical feel and traditional steel drums but in a weird spaced-out disco arrangement that made this a favourite at David Mancuso's infamous Loft as well as on the afro-funky scene. On the flip, we have the mighty 'Freakin' Time' from MFSB and Salsoul Orchestra rhythm maestro Keith Benson. Originally split into Parts 1 and 2 and released on 2 sides of a 7' and 12', here the two tracks are seamlessly edited together for maximum long-playing dancefloor impact. With heavy hypnotic drums, sexy vocals, dirty grooving bass, this is a real must-have. Great chance to get your hands on two disco funk masterpieces!

EDDIE HOLMAN is a familiar figure to Northern Soul fans, not least for his mid-sixties run of singles for Allen Klein's Parkway Records and his trans-Atlantic pop smash 'Hey There Lonely Girl' (a cover of Ruby & The Romantics' 'Hey There Lonely Boy'). Here we feature his 1977 Salsoul disco anthem 'This Will Be A Night To Remember'.

DOUBLE EXPOSURE are best known for their iconic 1976 disco album Ten Percent, one of the most successful albums to emerge from the Philly music scene.

Ibibio Sound Machine are set to release their debut LP through Soundway Records. Fronted by British / Nigerian vocalist Eno Williams, they combine elements of West African highlife, disco, post-punk & psychedelic electro soul. Their self-titled debut will be released 24th February.

From the banging sub-bass of 'Lets Dance' to the spiritual, gospel-tinged notes of the album's opening track 'Voice of the Bird', the band have turned in a dynamic and, at times, beautiful take on modern afro-soul music.

Folk stories, recounted to Eno by her family as a child in her mother's South-Eastern Nigerian Ibibio language form the creative lyrical fabric of the album. A large dose of electronic elements and an approach as influenced by their hometown of London as much as by West Africa, give the vocals and guitar lines space to breath without being overwhelmed.

A force of nature on stage, the 8-piece live band made their official live debut at this year's Transmusicales in France.

Such is the importance of Russell's contribution to the modern music scene that many consider his work to be untouchable but several modern day producers have carefully picked out key elements of his songs whilst recording entirely new and up to date soundtracks. Yam Who, Faze Action, singer Mary Moore, NYC's Pocketknife have worked hard to create entirely new instruments and vocals with additional remix work coming from Radio Slave.

In addition Peter Gordon who worked with Arthur Russell on many of the original releases has collaborated; adding his musicianship to the newly created cover of 'Go Bang'. Further collaborations from Arthur's friends and musicians, Steven Hall & Joyce Kirby, also provide a new version of 'Lucky Cloud' which is produced by NYC's Pocketknife.

Jason Kincade aka The Mayor writes: I've been given the task of writing about three new instalments in the channel xxx series, inspired by the late, great Mangiami restaurant.
From 2006 until its lamented closing in 2012 Mangiami was the downtown clubhouse for a very New York cross-section of DJs, artists, musicians, fashion people, music obsessives and assorted layabouts.

On any given night of the week you knew that within an hour of sitting down at the bar any number of your friends would soon appear, and be entertained by the massively charming owner, Gianfranco.
Then there were the DJ nights. Every Monday (and later Wednesday) from after work until far too late on a weeknight pretty much a who's who of local heroes and international superstars would play on the rickety old Technics sat on the bar, with mayhem and general debauchery to follow.

It wouldn't be a surprise to come in one night and find DJ Harvey at a table with Tim Sweeney next to Alex from Tokyo and Bing Ji Ling with Eric Duncan manning the decks and 100 people crowded into the tiny space and spilling out into the street.

These three 12s by some of the artists that frequented Mangiami, coming in advance of a compilation of original material on Golf Channel, are a pretty accurate view of what went on there.
From low-slung fuzzed out sleaze through gritty roadhouse blues via stringy guitar solo led disco to bubbly, infectious afro disco and finally dubby, reverb-ed out sheer lying on the floor madness there is something for all moods to reflect the eclectic shenanigans that went on in that now hallowed space.
Whilst I am not at liberty to reveal the identities behind these recordings, the word 'luminaries' definitely springs to mind - cop the vinyl and all will be revealed.

Originally hitting in 1978, this classic was an epic Italo disco hit worldwide, released on a multitude of labels including ZYK and Rams Horn. Penned by Will Morrison and Ian Guenther who also produced THP Orchestra, Grand Tour, Sticky Fingers & Skatt Brothers ('Walk The Night'). 'The Ultimate Warlorld' is a dark electronic disco workout that sounds like a Patrick Cowley production that never was. With its demonic vocals and tough driving percussion, this is sure to set dancefloors ablaze. The flip 'Warlord (Part 2)' takes things even deeper and druggier with its call to arms vocals running riot. This EP was a true blueprint of italo disco at the time and still sounds fresh as a daisy... with modern producers Serge Santiago and John Selway recently sampling this single to great effect

On the Prowl's Party Breaks imprint is back, this time with a four-track collection of tunes from label co-owner and the other half of Runaway, Jacques Renault. Here, we find the Brooklyn-based DJ and producer doing one of the things he does best: edits. However, unlike previous releases, Renault is expanding his reach and dabbling in genres he hasn't publicly unleashed before--the 12' begins with an ode to the sounds of early 90s raves (complete with air horns and a Mary J. Blige vocal sample), hops over to the deep house styles of the era with a jam that sounds right out of a Crystal Waters playbook, and finally lands on a couple of electrified, feel-good disco edits, properly (and authentically) embellished with fidgety guitars, sexy vocals, and a dash of piano glitz.

Great new 12' compilation featuring a superb selection of tracks showcasing the Balearic sound of the mighty Richie Havens. First up is his awesome take on the Lamont Dozier classic 'Going Back To My Roots'. Originally released back in 1980, Richie's version was rediscovered later by the early Balearic DJs and became an anthem on that scene. Also included are Richie's incredible versions of classics like Fleetwood Mac's 'Dreams', The Doobie Brothers' 'Long Train Running' and his beautifully lush take on The Beatles' 'Strawberry Fields Forever' as well as the gorgeous sun-kissed vibe of 'Gay Cavalier', a captivating duet with Pino Daniele taken from Havens' 1983 LP 'Common Ground'. Another great collection from the Sunkissed camp.

Profiled within this album and book are the bands that transitioned from funk to disco; the bands that kept up the backbeat as rhythm moved to the backseat. Against the odds, they left recorded artifacts for we at Now-Again to dig out, dust off and restore. Collected here for the first time are the musical dreams of dozens, dreams that were deferred but were never discarded. Soul Cal features some well-known figures from the various 'soul' scenes that paved the way for their resurgence. The Northern Soul, Modern Soul and Deep Disco and Funk circles have all obsessed over the likes of Luther Davis, Rhythm Machine, Mixed Sugar and Record Player. But these and Soul Cal's other bands - many of whom managed only to release a solitary 7' single in their heyday - will be unknown to most. Their obscurity notwithstanding, the music made by these bands is sure to strike a chord within the soul of any person taken by black American music from the latter half of the 20th century. In his long-running investigation into this flux-period in black American music, compiler and key researcher Eothen 'Egon' Alapatt sought not only licenses, records and master tapes - but the stories and backdrops of these majestic soul songs and the ensembles that created them. 01 Rufus And Chaka Khan - Ain't Nobody

This double pack 12' will include 6 previously unreleased and highly coveted remixes. Stars of the show are two extremely coveted and previously unreleased 12' mixes from Teena Marie and Tata Vega. The Teena Marie track has previously been released in edited form on a flexidisc, which generated a huge amount of praise and excitement within the Motown community, and are sure to become dancefloor staples upon release.

A few trips in Tel Aviv made Ivan Smagghe aware of the extensive and more importantly, quasi forgotten, wave and pop scene from Israel. Blown away some of the tracks passed on to him, He and The Ginger Prince thought it would be a good start for the LDDLM reissues series, edits and originals.

GAZOLINA by CHROMOSOME is one of those record hunters grail. Fetching far too much money on Discogs these days and having been a DJing classic of RED AXES for years, it was only natural that Niv and Dori got their hands dirty. Their edit keeps the raw punk rage of the original and is all the better for it.

NOSEI HAMIGBAAT's BIRTHDAY was the track that triggered it all and appears on vinyl for the first time in 30 years (I strongly recommend buying the CD of their album on Anova, a label dedicated to excavating the TA underground). This is a heavily psychedelic romp, as if the 13th floor elevator had stopped on the 1983th floor. Wave, but in a cramped style. THIS HAS BEEN LEFT UNTOUCHED, IN ALL IT'S BEAUTY.

The purists will tell me that TOVA GERTNER is not part of the DOWNTOWN TEL AVIV scene. They are right, she is not. But ETMOL (1987), a chart hit in Israel, was too much of a good pop song to let pass. Tim Paris and Ivan Smagghe are on IT'S A FINE LINE edit duty and have made up a genre for it: Balnearic, the sound of the beach and the nose bleed - pianos and hands not in the air but in your pockets, searching for those empty wraps.
