Helms Alee's third album, Sleepwalking Sailors sounds like many styles combined into one, and none of it concerned with any notion other than creating vital, urgent and uniquely characteristic music. Bassist/vocalist Dana James, drummer/vocalist Hozoji Matheson-Margullis and guitarist/vocalist Ben Verellen combine a vast array of ideas within a single song, while still sounding entirely cohesive. Their songs are undeniably heavy, but also freely roaming through icy post-punk and warm melodic haze at any given moment. Any given song can be pummeling one moment and then subtly shift into triply harmonies without the listener even realizing what has happened. Sleepwalking Sailors was recorded with engineer Chris Common (These Arms Are Snakes, Pelican, Chelsea Wolfe) in Seattle, and marks the band's first release for new home Sargent House. "We spent 3-1/2 years writing the songs for this album, so it's thematically all over the place' Verellen says. 'We ended up with something that sounds really big, but also a bit more aggressive." Auf ihrem Metal Blade-Einstand zeigen sich SLOUGH FEG im mittlerweile für sie feststehenden Hard Rock-Kontext (Metal im standardisierten Sinn waren sie ohnehin nie) noch ein bisschen abwechslungsreicher und störrischer wie auf "Ape Uprising". Die Gruppe muss sich nicht zwanghaft neu erfinden, weil sie enge Sparten sowieso schon immer gemieden hat. Harmonisierter Gesang und Orgel wie im eröffnenden 'Bertrand Russell's Sex Den' sind zumindest ein nebensächliches Novum, doch umso wichtiger bleibt: Der Mix aus prototypischem Hard Rock, Metal und einem gerüttelten Maß Unberechenbarkeit nebst irren wie tiefsinnigen Texten sucht seinesgleichen. "Digital Resistance" ist für Neuentdecker vielleicht nicht der beste Einstieg ins Schaffen der Band, aber wie bislang all ihre Veröffentlichungen ein Lichtblick im von Kalkül bestimmten Szene-Betrieb. Würde man intelligenten Menschen wie Mike ein Ohr schenken und nicht lebens- beziehungsweise die Realität verneinenden Selbstdarstellern, wäre die Metal-Welt eine bessere. Bis dahin bitte diesen vor Einfallsreichtum und Feeling gleichermaßen strotzenden Teller kaufen, am besten gleich ein ganzes Gedeck. (AS) -LEGACY

Kerslake, Demons and Wizards captivates by way of taut songwriting and instrumental execution. Rather than function

as the primary attraction, make-believe lyrical themes augment a formidable assembly of folk-derived melodies, sharp

medleys, and powerful hooks. Acoustic guitars weave webs of finite textures through which crackling, church-like organ

passages and space-conscious bass lines maneuver. Songs come across with an ethereal, powerful feel.

Glowing with old-fashioned tube-amp warmth, concise and punchy fare like 'The Wizard,' 'Traveler In Time,' and the hit

'Easy Livin'' touch upon garage-rock basics. Epics such as 'Circle of Hands' and 'Paradise/The Spell'—a multi-part sonic

excursion whose choral grace and spiritual glide evoke distant lands, misty cloud forests, and peaceful eternities—cling to

a sensitivity underscored by deft piano touches. No wonder Uriah Heep spent the remainder of its lifespan trying to again

capture such a balance.

Pooling together a group of influences as diverse as its members, BESTIAL MOUTHS present a raw, synth-driven energy
propelled by singer Lynette Cerezo's powerful vocals. Often likened to Diamanda Galas, Siouxsie Sioux or Lydia Lunch, Cerezo
delivers each note with fury and abandon. Synthesists/keyboardists Christopher Myrick and Gustavo Aldana channel early industrial,
EBM, goth and minimal synth pop in turns, blending harsh electronics and lush melodies. When fused to Aldana's splintered programmed
beats and the tribal rhythms and samples of drummer Jessica Reuter, the harmonics combine to breathe new life into post
punk, weaving their own distinct creation in the process. Bestial Mouths has released an album on Dais Records.

DEATHDAY is a Los Angeles based outfit playing angular, minimal synth latent music inspired by early factory records / Manchester
post-punk and European electronic stylings à la the French and Belgian cold wave movements; blending dark and often esoteric
images with sparse, primal,and analog sounds. Deathday has been recording and performing its music since 2007 and have
released tracks on Downwards and Mannequin records compilations.

*Krallice are a machine. With humble beginnings and goals, they quickly evolved into a keystone of the US black metal scene. Many will argue the genre tag, if it's applicable to the band, if they're truly black metal. While anyone can clearly see that Krallice are by no means a typical black metal band, it's plain to me that they're taking legendary genre
influences and processing them through their own, unique filter with incredible results.
*Everyone in Krallice is at a brilliant technical musician, and their ability to write music that is hypnotic while
remaining technical is something that continues to blow me away. Now, four full length albums into their life as a band, Krallice's sound continues to evolve. They continue to fine tune and hone their style. With each release I find myself believing that new record is as tight as they could be, that it is the definition of their sound as a band. With
each new recording I'm proven so very wrong.
*Years Past Matter strikes a different chord than Diotima did, and different even than the two first albums before that. Krallice seem to be aiming for a greater level of obscurity in their work, from production to lyrics and song titles, which have not been published prior to the release of this vinyl edition. Within the mix itself you can hear a stark
difference from past albums, a move towards greater cohesiveness in their sound. This is particularly apparent in the vocals, which appear to be lower in the mix, helping to drive home the aforementioned hypnotic feel. And although Nick McMaster's metal growls are still as prominent here as they were on Diotima, the music itself has less of the up front 'metal' feel than it has in the past when Nick's vocals were present alongside Mick Barr's signature screams.
*Krallice somehow continue to become more their own band without alienating their listeners. They're not carving a new path for others to follow, they're building a new realm of music where they themselves will dwell.
