The Gil Evans Orchestra - Out Of The Cool

Originally released in 1960, this album is widely considered to be Evans' masterpiece, on par with Duke Ellington in terms of orchestration, and essential listening for any jazz fan. Evans had spent the previous few years recording with Miles Davis on such acclaimed works as Miles Ahead, Porgy and Bess and Sketches Of Spain, a collaboration which proved to be extremely enriching for both men. This LP was Evans' first post-Miles recording, and the album's title, Out Of The Cool, is an obvious nod to that fact (a play on Davis' own Birth Of The Cool). The album showcases two significant Evans compositions, the groundbreaking 'La Nevada' and 'Sunken Treasure'.

45 RPM audiophile version in a numbered first pressing limited to 500 copies.

Black Eye Friday

12inchBROOTS001LP
28.02.2015

Brassroots has enjoyed steady airplay among an array of top DJs around the world including BBC Radio's Giles Peterson, Rob Da Bank, Sean Rowley on Magic and Choice FM with Calvin Francis. They're staples in sets by Mr. Scruff in the U.K. and Lefto all over Europe. In California, KCRW's Jeremey Sole, and all along the East Coast in the United States by Rich Medina.

The band released a 7 track EP of cover versions in 2009. 3 tracks from that EP were re-released by Canadian label boss John Kong at Do Right! Music in 2010. Those 3 tracks Good Life, Karma Police and 7 Nation Army have since appeared in the iTunes top 100 charts well over 1,000 times in the last 3 years including number 1's in Belgium, Portugal and New Zealand.

Brassroots gained notoriety by playing instrumental brass band covers of popular party bangers and continued to grow through their own brand of brass band pop. Their most popular cover by far to this date is of Inner City's Good Life.

This album is the band's second self release, this time through their own record label Brassroots Records.

This album represents the first of their own original music, each tune written by one, or all of the band members.

Azymuth - Light As A Feather

Four decades on and Azymuth has reached legendary status amongst fans worldwide and across the music industry thanks to the trio's pioneering blend of traditional Brazilian jazz and proto funk fusion from the early 70's right through to the present day.

In 1979 the band's first Milestone Records release, 'Light As A Feather' quickly became one of the best-selling LPs of the year. Featuring the worldwide disco/fusion hit single 'Jazz Carnival' and going on to sell more than half a million copies internationally, the album stayed in the UK Top 20 for eight straight weeks. An incredibly well thought out album both in pace, song selection and musicality, 'Light As A Feather' marked a maturing of the band as they began to rightfully utilise the studio as an instrument itself, embracing numerous mixing and recording techniques not yet common for the time as well as pioneering the use of the Big Muff and Dolby System to great effect. The end result is an album that endures to this day as a jazz funk masterpiece.

Now Far Out is pleased to present this seminal recording remixed and re-mastered from the original tapes, lovingly reproduced on heavy weight vinyl and CD. Featuring previously unreleased tracks and remixes from house stalwarts Theo Parrish, Ashley Beedle, Mark E and more, this definitive edition of Azymuth's breakthrough LP is a must-have for connoisseurs and an invaluable introduction to the Azymuth sound for the uninitiated.

Sadly with this re-release album well into production at the untimely recent passing of Jose Roberto Betrami, FARO170 stands as a solemn reminder of our dearly departed friend and the effortless musical genius of Azymuth in their ascendancy.

Black Spirituals - High Vibration Resonance Vol.1 - Live At Disjecta

Black Spirituals are Zachary James Watkins (electronics) and Marshall Trammell (percussion). They are currently touring Europe with Earth.

"High Vibration Resonance Vol.1" was recorded live at Disjecta Art Gallery on August 30th, 2014 by Daniel Menche. Mastered by Jacob Felix Huele. 1+1=3.

Black Spirituals' performance involves the manipulation of temporal experience using a framework of dynamic relationships and a "Multi-Aesthetic Approach to Improvisation." The title "Black Spirituals" is borrowed from a found cassette documenting a lecture given by Bernice Reagon on the roots music of American Black Slaves. These stories form a sonic resonance that speaks of rich relationships to ones surroundings, memories, profound feelings, dreams, and the experiences that inspire human expression. This duet features a new tradition in conversant, duo vernacular dynamics that sparked a revolution in our conceptions of space, stage, ritual, performance, geography, praxis, brotherhood, relationships, rockin' out, and more.

Polar Bear - Same As You

Polar Bear

Same As You

12inchBAY98V
Leaf
30.03.2015

Given its short gestation, it is striking how far removed the new album is from its predecessor . After the dark complexity of recent output, Same As You is startlingly fresh, as inclusive and accessible as the title suggests, while still maintaining the playful experimentation on which the band has made its name.

Originally conceived as a single longform piece, the tempo remains constant but does not prevent the band from producing swells of raw, joyous, life-affirming energy within these self-imposed limits

The vocal performances and the heartfelt, spiritual lyrics are an inspired addition to the rich instrumental mix: Pete Wareham and Mark Lockheart (tenor sax), Tom Herbert (double bass) and Leafcutter John (guitar, electronics), with Shabaka Hutchings (Sons Of Kemet, Melt Yourself Down) making a guest appearance.

The album's lead single 'Dont Let The Feeling Go' sees Rochford take on vocal duties alongside a choir of friends and collaborators: it's Polar Bear at their most direct.

The use of vocals may catch the ear but that should come as no surprise given that Rochford has enjoyed working with singers as diverse as Beck, Spoek Mathambo, Paolo Nutini and Rokia Traoré over a 15 year career that has seen the drummer, composer and producer emerge as a pivotal figure in contemporary British music

Recorded by Rochford in London, and mixed in the Mojave Desert with Ken Barrientos late last year

Polar Bear will tour Europe from February (see confirmed dates below)

Billie Holiday - Live At The Monterey Jazz Festival October 5th 1958

Billie Holiday was in fine form on 5 October 1958 at the Monterey Jazz Festival; little did anyone know at the time it would be her last recorded live date and a mere 9 months later she would succumb to her vices, dead from heart failure brought on by cirrhosis of the liver. Regardless of what was to come, on that autumnal California night, Billie sang her heart out backed by a small, swinging combo, in stark contrast to the heavily orchestrated Lady In Satin released earlier in the year and, as wonderful as that album is, this is the way Billie was meant to be heard: sultry and swinging, invoking images of smokey nightclubs and back alley gin joints. A classic live recording from one of the most iconic voices of all-time, in a limited edition of 300 numbered copies on red vinyl with white splatter.

Idris Muhammad - Turn This Mutha Out
also available

Vinyl

Idris Muhammad started out a drummer/percussionist, his first recording being Fats Domino's hit single 'Blueberry Hill' in 1956. He also played with the likes of Sam Cooke, Jerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions. Soon his reputation grew such that he earned a recording gig with the legendary Jazz alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson, with whom he contributed some of the funkiest drum patterns of the late 60's. His impeccable sense of timing made Idris a natural for the drum chair in the upbeat Soul Jazz of that period. Also he was frequently in Hammond organ combos to which his energetic style was especially suited. Muhammad played with nearly all the great Hammond players - Charles Earland, Lonnie Smith, Leon Spencer, Reuben Wilson and more besides, as well as Donaldson's sidemen like George Benson and Melvin Sparks.
Idris Muhammad recorded this classic Jazz-Funk album 'Turn This Mutha Out' in 1977 for the Kudu label. Some great session musicians accompanied him and the album has that David Matthews signature Disco-Jazz-Funk sound. It was well received in the UK most notably for the opening track 'Could Heaven Ever Be Like This', an undisputed classic. Idris and Wilbur Bascomb on bass create the perfect bedrock for Mike Brecker on Tenor Sax, Hiram Bullock on Guitar and Cliff Carter on Synthesizer to solo above, topped by Frank Floyd's vocals. It has been sampled at least seventeen times, most notably by Jamiroquai and Drake. 'Turn This Mutha Out' also has many other tracks of note. 'Camby Bolongo' is a delightful percussion heavy rhythmic instrumental featuring Randy Brecker on Trumpet and Jeremy Steig on flute. 'Crab Apple' is a wonderfully funky track with a great bass line and groove that has found favour with samplers having been used to create at least nineteen new Hip Hop and R&B tracks. 'Moon Hymn' is a beautiful ethereal track featuring David Tofani on Soprano Sax, that develops into a mid tempo funky groove as Ronnie Cuber's Baritone Sax appears, then shifts back to serenity. Jeremy Steig and Guitarist Eric Gale contribute heavily to the funky album closer 'Say What' that has also come to samplers attention. We are delighted to present this album on CD for the first time anywhere in the world.

Luis Enriquez And His Electronic Men - Electronia

"Don't let the title fool you; this is not a record of electronic music, but of twelve tunes performed by a small instrumental combo: three guitars, drums, piano and a double bass. There is a sixth instrument: the sound recording machine, which functions electronically. By amplifying, superimposing, drawing out and reducing the sounds created by the instrumental combo, the electronic recorder imbues each piece of music, be it already well-known or an "original", with a brand-new, highly unusual and extremely attractive flavor." (from the original Lp liner notes.

Don't let the band name fool you: this is Luis Enriquez BACALOV that plays an exciting mix of instrumental beat-surf-rock'n'roll with the help of Enrico Ciacci, Alessandroni and Tosoni on guitar, the Munaro brothers on drums and Simeone on double bass. Enriquez himself plays organ, harpsichord and electric piano. In some pieces he also uses the "Onde Martenot", an electronic instrument named after his inventor. The track list mixes originals composed by Bacalov and a few covers, including an awesome version of Morricone's Ninna Nanna.

Track list: Side A: Incontro a Roma (Enriquez); Spanish Drag (Enriquez); Walk Don't Run '64 (John Smith); Il Guardiano (Tosoni); Ninna Nanna '65 (Morricone); Lady Guitar (De Mutiis). Side B: Fender with Anger (Enriquez); Foglie Gialle (Enriquez); Tequila (Chuck Rio); Montemario by Night (Enriquez); Guitar Spyder (De Mutiis); Rigel 1 (Enriquez).

Originally released by RCA in 1965. Original artwork. Sound restoring and master done by Roberto Zamori at Film Music Art Studio.

Onom Agemo & The Disco Jumpers - Cranes And Carpets

Berlin-based quintet Onom Agemo & the Disco Jumpers follow up their 7" single - 2 Feet / Kibili - with an album of poly-rhythmic afro grooves, sax and psyched-out synths. The group has developed a unique groove and style of playing, constructing a collection of eight songs, that throws together tight and funky influences from
Morocco and Ethiopia with crunchy analogue synths, spacey organs and effects, and fluid sax and flute lines for a sound that's all their own. The LP is a collection of compositions by traveling sax man JohannesSchleiermacher, inspired by his journeys through the world. The band even travelled to Morocco for playing and recording with a quartet of percussionists/ singers in the Issawa tradition, a Sufi Trance Brotherhood in central Morocco. Onom Agemo and the Disco Jumpers have been playing together for years, and it shows. Taking Schleiermacher's compositions, the group ehearse the songs andplay them live to finalize the arrangement before recording the tracks to different 4-track tape machines, mostly at drummer Bernd Oezsevim's rehearsal space. Take the track - Cool Runnings' for example: locked in the groove, the intertwined saxand synth melody moves up and down the Anichihoye scale. Not to be confusedwith the comedy of the same title, the track is named after a bar in Berlin Friedrichshain, where friends of the band put on their night Tropical Timewarp. This interlocking of groove and melody is a signature element, and also inspired the title of the album. Cranes and Carpets alludes to changing patterns, and howthe parts of a wider whole can work together in synchronicity. Combine an almost telepathic group intuition with the fact that Schleiermacher also engineered and produced the record, and the pieces start to add up to why the Disco Jumpers sound like they do.It's an authentic mix of North African rhythms and modes, live jazz musicianship and analogue synths that's reminiscent of electronic African pioneers like William Onyeabor and Manu Dibango as much as modern ensembles like The Heliocentrics. While the album sounds like it could have been discovered on a dusty old tape down a Marrakesh marketplace, it has a modern twist in the neat craftsmanship and tight arrangements that ensures a blend of styles that couldn't be anyone else.

Werner Herzog: 'Florian was always able to create music I feel helps audiences visualize something hidden in the images on screen, and in our own souls too.' 'Herzog on Herzog'
Kailashis a new collection of work from Florian Fricke, leader of PopolVuh, seminal group in the German rock scene of the 1970s (Can, Faust, AmonDuul, Ash Ra Tempel, Tangerine Dream) and creators of classic soundtracks to the films of Werner Herzog(Aguirre the Wrath of God, Nosferatu, Fitzcaraldo and others).
Kailash brings together essential and unreleased piano recordings, together with Fricke's travelogue film Kailash, about his spiritual voyage to Tibet's 22,000 ft. Kailash mountain, 'Throne of the Gods', and the accompanying soundtrack album to this film.
This collection is released as a deluxe 2CD + DVD set and as a one off 1000 copies worldwide collectors bespoke box set 2LP + DVD with bonus cards and poster.
Essential Piano Recordings:For the first time, this compilation on Soul Jazz Records unites a careful selection of Florian Fricke's most favourite piano tracks and compositions, both released and previously unreleased. Aside from his groundbreaking work with PopolVuh, Fricke's background is that of a classical composer and it was one of his late wishes to release 'piano only' recordings.
These essential piano recordings by Florian Fricke should be considered as something like the core, or the heart, of many PopolVuh compositions. They contain tracks from 1972-1989 that Florian Fricke would have liked on a piano only album, enriched with further song improvisations that have been found posthumously, after he passed away in 2001.Some of these are studies for key tracks of PopolVuh(for example 'Hosianna Mantra', 1972). Others are reoccurring patterns and sequences, with Florian often working with recurring motives frequently further developed with the group.
This record is devoted to his inspiration and creativity as a contributor to an ongoing spiritual journey for others.
Kailash - Pilgrimage to The Throne of the Gods: The holiest mountain in Asia, in a far away corner of west Tibet, amidst wild and ragged landscape, nearly entirely cut off from the rest of the world, is called Kailash. For the pilgrims of four religions this 6675m high mountain is the 'throne of gods', or 'navel of the world' - a place where the divine takes an earthly shape. For thousands of years pilgrims have travelled to this place to worship the mystery of the mountain circumnavigating it on foot. The path around Kailash is an archaic 'path of initiation'.
Florian Fricke and filmmaker Frank Fiedler (also an original founding PopolVuh member) made their own spiritual trek along this path and documented the journey. Accompanying epic landscape scenes in the film is the music of Florian Fricke and PopolVuh, spiritual music inspired by this unique journey.
This posthumous project has been put together with the full cooperation and assistance of Florian Fricke's family.

Accompanied by an unidentified horn and rhythm section and recorded in Paris in 1962 and '63, the album features original compositions, many of them coauthored by Maria Helena Toledo, and features Bonfá's rhythmically charged guitar style and his extraordinary, expressive vocal. The fourth track, 'Dor Que Faz Doer,' includes his percussive beating on the body of the guitar, and his probing vocal on the lilting 'Teu Olhar Triste' makes for one of the more tender pieces in the collection. Le Roi de la Bossa Nova is a celebration of the brilliance of one of Brazil's most beloved artists and should be a must for all avid collectors. (...)

Quiet Nights is the ninth studio album by jazz musician Miles Davis, and his fourth and final album collaboration with Gil Evans. The 60's saw the popularization of bossa nova in American homes and as an admitted admirer of the music from Brazil, it is not surprising that Miles Davis would attempt an album inspired by the new craze. Accompanied by Evan's conscientious arrangement, standards such as 'Once Upon summertime' and 'Wait till you see her' are performed with an unmistakably unique style that could only be done by Davis.

Recorded in Studios in New York City between July 27, 1962 & April 17, 1963

White On Black Vol. 1

  • A1: Going Home (Blludd Relations Version)
  • B1: Going Home (Hello Skinny Remix)

When London quartet Sons of Kemet released its debut album 'Burn' last year (out now on Naim), no one could have predicted the impact that it made. The band won a MOBO, featured on many 'Albums of the Year' and 'Best Of' lists from iTunes to the Quietus and gained a reputation for incendiary live shows.

'Going Home' was the Sons of Kemet track in question and to sidestep conformity even more, it was decided to release the remixes on a 45rpm 12" inch single, with a remix on a side each, and not to include the original (this was a difficult decision of course, being very fond of the original too). And so White on Black was born: a series of 45rpm 12" singles on heavyweight black wax, all of which will be limited and numbered to 300 copies.

Side A - Blludd Relations is a collaboration between producer Bullion (best known for his work on Young Turks and his very own DEEK label) and Jesse Hackett (multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer with Brownswood's Owiny Sigoma Band/Elmore Judd and one half of Pipe Down! a bi-weekly show on NTS Radio). Together they make daring, alternative pop of the highest order and this tune, using 'Going Home' as a foundation, but building with more electronic architectural daring (and ringing telephones), is no exception.

Side B - Hello Skinny is acclaimed producer/composer alter-ego of Tom Skinner (who is one of two drummers that can be found in Sons Of Kemet), and here boldly employs his signature use of hypnotic rhythm alongside cuts of dexterous horn from the original 'Going Home' to create a progressive concoction of world music and 2-step!

A famous European set from Thelonious Monk - recorded early in the 60s with his famous quartet that included Charlie Rouse on tenor! Rouse is already amazing - really stretching out in these modern, angular lines that are quite different than any of his recordings a few years before - a perfect match for the inventive piano of Monk, as would later be demonstrated on a host of classic studio recordings. There's an open, spontaneous energy between the pair in this live setting, though - almost like they're working out new ideas, but doing so perfectly - with the bass of John Ore and drums of Frankie Dunlop to round things out. Titles include 'Bemsha Swing', 'Crepuscule With Nellie', 'San Francisco Holiday', 'Body & Soul', 'Straight No Chaser', and 'Epistrophy' (Dusty Groove)

Terry Callier - What Color Is Love

* 180 gram audiophile vinyl

Terry Callier's What Color Is Love (1973) is an essential Soul Jazz album that should belong in anyone's record collection. This record was produced by Charles Stepney, whose work with Cadet / Chess records, Rotary Connection and Earth, Wind & Fire earned him popular acclaim. Filled with Funk, Rock, Folk, Jazz, and even Classical influences, vocalist Callier can be heard on this album to the most intriguing heights.

"Dancing Girl" opens the album with Stepney's majestic orchestration. Songs like "What Color Is Love" and "Ho Tsing Mee", an elegant antiwar prayer of confusion, somehow avoid clichés or take them to another level.

"You Goin' Miss Your Candyman" was featured in the French movie,Intouchables.

Callier's passionate voice captures the sweeping drama of the human condition. A lost romantic amid "concrete frond yards," this album is a must-have for any music connoisseur.

Melanie De Biasio - Gilles Peterson Presents Melanie De Biasio " No Deal

Internationally renowned DJ and radio personality Gilles Peterson has called upon some of the most exciting names across the jazz, electronic and indie worlds to rework Melanie De Biasio's acclaimed album No Deal, including EELS, The Cinematic Orchestra, Hex, and Seven Davis Junior.

EELS haunting, orchestral reworking of opening track I Feel You is the first ever remix by Mark Oliver Everett (AKA E), who fell in love with De Biasio's music when she supported EELS at the Royal Albert Hall in June. The Cinemantic Orchestra give I'm Gonna Leave You an intense reworking, while beat maker C. Crisci, a.k.a Clap! Clap! gives the same track an afro-beat slant. Seven Davis Jr gives title-track No Deal an old school house flavour, while LA's Jonwayne coats With All My Love a lush balm of hip-hop. Japan's Toshio Matsuura (AKA Hex) adds an impressive urgency to The Flow, whilst France's modern classical composer Chassol provides a downtempo and discordant take on Sweet Darling Pain.

2014 has been a breakthrough year for Brussels-based De Biasio, who was recently announced the winner for Belgium of the 2015 European Border Breakers Awards (EBBA), which celebrate the best new pop, rock and dance acts in Europe which have achieved cross-border chart success. Other winners include Hosier (Ireland), MO (Denmark), Milky Chance (Germany), and Todd Terje (Norway).

No Deal received 4 star reviews from The Guardian, Mojo, and Record Collector, with Hi-Fi Plus awarding it 10 out of 10, saying "I think we have the album of the year on our hands." Her most recent single I'm Gonna Leave You was playlisted at BBC 6 Music, and last month De Biasio performed on Later...With Jools Holland, BBC2's flagship music show, becoming the first Belgian artist to be invited on the show since 1995.

The Remo Rau Quartet - At The Cafe Africana

Original sleeve notes from 1961: At Zurich, Switzerland, the Cafe Africana is the meetingplace for jazz musicians and fans alike, where both professional and amateur musicians gather for informal sessions. Remo Rau, composer, arranger and vibist has been playing with his all-Swiss, non-professional quartet at this cafe every Tuesday for the past two years. This first recording of theirs was taken from the original tape. Most Jazz fans agree that Jazz recorded directly "on the spot" is often very much more authentic, despite faults in performance which cannot be corrected. The quality of this recording may not be as good as any done in the studios, but on the other hand the listener will hear Jazz performed spontaneously in a true jazz atmosphere.

Remo Rau has the following to say about his quartet: "Our repertoire consists of compositions by a great number of the 'modern' greats, such as: Tad Dameron, Charlie Parker, Th. Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, Horace Silver, Hank Mobley and others, besides numerous original compositions. We are not trying to copy any specific group. We like nice themes, interesting harmonies and we try our best to get these rolling on a solid beat. When we play 'standards', we usually work our own arrangements".

Remo Rau (1925-1987) was born in Yokohama and spent his youth in Japan with lessons in piano, music theory and oboe. In 1942 he moved to Switzerland. In addition to business education he continued his musical activities. From the mid-50s, he worked as a promoter for the Zurich jazz scene, since 1959 as head of the jazz cafe-club "Cafe Africana" and in 1968 as a co-founder of the organization "Modern Jazz Zurich".

As booker of the Africana in the early 1960s, he brought artists such as Abdullah Ibrahim,Horace Silver and Chris McGregor to Zurich. The jazz musician Remo Rau was influenced by the "funky" hard bop of Horace Silver along with more listening impressions. Rau told Nick Liebmann, how he was personally instructed by Horace Silver in the rhythmic and harmonic intricacies of hard bop at the Africana, with Silver sitting next to him at the piano for hours (cf. Bruno Spoerri - Jazz in Switzerland).

Very early on, Rau experimented with raga or twelve-tone scales in his "fusion" compositions , also with elements of pop, funk and world music. He also realized amazing multimedia projects. Some of his concert performances like "ballet and jazz", "Ava and Edam" or "multi-media dance theater" received considerable local recognition.

Rau also wrote an opera trilogy, entitled "Gaia - Crystal - Terra Nova", which was dedicated to his "dream of a peaceful world", but the piece was never performed, moreover a "Concerto for Flute, String Orchestra and Percussion" (1965-1970) broadcasted over radio, and chamber works such as a duo for violin and piano named "Caleidoscope" (1978). Remo Rau died in Zurich in 1987 because of cancer, leaving many excellent works to his posterity. As "Classical Musician" he left whole shoe boxes full of music for multimedia projects, operas, concertos and chamber music.

Jone Takamäki Trio - Universal Mind

This is a fully-authorised vinyl re-release of a forgotten Finnish spiritual-improv classic from 1982, which has never been available on CD, and whose initial vinyl release has rarely been heard outside Finland.
A forgotten slice of Finnish spiritual jazz from the 1980s, originally released on Johanna and not available anywhere until now, the only place its cropped up since it release is on 1990s compilation Son Of Arctic Hysteria. Now it sees s vinyl reissue on Arc Light Editions
Arc Light Editions follows up two successful vinyl-only releases (Arthur Russell, Ingram Marshall) with Jone Takamäki Trio's Universal Mind, a forgotten Finnish spiritual improv record from 1982, fully authorized by Jone himself. The tracks on Universal Mind are based on traditional Indian arrangements, with Japanese influence, leaning towards Alice Coltrane's spirituality and pace. In addition to traditional improv instrumentation (saxophone, bass, drums), the record also includes synthesizers, gongs, finger pianos, a vibraphone and washbasins. Jone says, recalling making the record: "We played a lot together, daily, at our rehearsal space before recording. We went through the melodies and talked about how to handle them with a kind of different angle, improvised a lot with different sounds. We talked about tempos, especially we were diving deep into special moods, how each of those melodies talked to us. They are mostly old love songs from India, more folk songs than classical music." After the recording, they left immediately on a European tour. "I told the people at the record company not to do anything to the record before we came back, but it was released while we were away. We saw the record on the windows of different record shops when we drove into town from the tour!" The record has never appeared on CD, and the 1982 vinyl release has rarely been heard outside Finland. The only place the release has re-emerged in recent memory is with the track "Bhupala I" selected on Son of Arctic Hysteria, a CD compilation of Finnish avant-garde and experimental music

Jorge Ben in 1963, after the large impact of his first album Samba Esquema Novo (DOK225), goes back into the studio to realize his very cool early album Sacundin Ben Samba. Here Ben's work took a jazzy turn, with a crossover into Brazil's cabaretstyle pop. Some of these tracks have a straight jazz character, particularly with the piano and horn combos (and assist by Meirelles and Luiz Carlos Vinhas...) Interestingly enough, although he didn't stick with style long, his version of jazzy presentation swung heavier than most of the proper 'jazz' records of the time, by folks such as the Tambo Trio, etc.
