CAVE are kind of beyond time. You might feel like it's been
awhile since you've seen or heard them but when you see
or hear them again, that moment will feel like 'Allways'.
During the making of the last album, 'Threace', CAVE was
in the process of becoming a quintet. They toured the
world afterwards, playing on four continents and eighteen
countries - as close to everywhere as they could get. Then
they took a minute. They recorded it over time, in Chile
and then Chicago. You can hear all of this, the energy of
liveness, the reps, and consolidating expanded possibilities
within their new alignment, the time away, the distance
and the freshness of returning to recorded sounds,
everywhere on 'Allways'.
In the past, much has been made of CAVE's use of
particular compelling tropes but their inspiration comes
from everywhere - Miles, psych, beats, exotica, library
music, rock, punk, the Germans, the New York guys too,
minimalists, the Dead, music from India, everywhere. This
is a bunch of guys playing rock-based music in a way that
pushes them forward from everything they've experienced.
When you listen to the new CAVE you hear guitars - lots of
them - bubbling under, scratching, fanning, locking in and
taking off, soaring on acid-washed wings, with keys that
pump, burr and whoosh in and out of the rhythms.
Half-speed mastering of 'Allways' at Abbey Road has
allowed the activity at all frequencies to present with a
liquid fullness and ripe detail. 'Allways' is a blueprint for
your ears to read and a map for CAVE to follow through
the world.

Kungens Män from Stockholm, Sweden has been around as a musical unit since 2012. The roots as friends go way back though. Noises, impulses, fuck ups and improvised jams have been recorded since day one and some of them have been put out on record. This is the first one on Riot Season Records.
 
While the previous album Fuzz på svenska on the German label Adansonia Records was somewhat jazzy and pretty introverted, this new one CHEF is more rock and to the point, but still in the exploring, heady way typical of Kungens Män. Oh, CHEF doesn't have anything to do with cooking - it means boss or chief in Swedish.
 
The inspiration comes from the drone, the rattle of the loose screw, the circuit failure of the effects, the phatness of the moog and from the very diverse wiring of a bunch of middle aged Swedish freaks. Kungens Män never plan the next musical move - it presents itself. Sometimes the costume sewn is really ugly, but somehow there's always room for the sublime as you turn it inside out.

Like the Golden Gate Bridge, hot dogs, Wrigley Field, Converse All-Stars, and Jack Daniels, "Great Balls of Fire" is of the uppermost echelon of cultural exports America has ever produced. Why not try their hand at a live album Recorded in a studio, one take. Something different. Or a movie A live movie, maybe

For the gentlemen of STADT, before they started recording their new album There Is/Nothing Twice, simply 'making a record' was not on top of the to-do list. It was rather 'something', out there.

It didn't turn out to be a movie, nor a live album, and yet it also kind of did. 'Something' they now describe as two separate ep's, merged together. One part made in their homey Ghent studio, the other recorded - and filmed! - live at Amerikaans Theater, former television studios in Brussels, build in the late fifties. 'Something' that's equally hybrid and fluid as the sound of STADT, a band who prefer to dig and embrace their very own pitfalls.

In 2015, after the release of their second LP Escalators, some of STADT affiliates went their various ways. Singer and synth maestro Fulco Ottervanger and drummer Simon Segers make up 2/3 of the celebrated jazz trio De Beren Gieren, while Ottervanger found a likeminded sparring partner in drummer Lander Gyselinck (STUFF.) to bounce beats back and forth with BeraadGeslagen, and Segers joined the ranks of ethio-jazz troupe Black Flower and the voodoo trio of MDC III. The second Segers in the band, guitarist-keyboardist Frederic, went on to produce for, and sometimes play with, several Belgian bands.

But STADT is the sanctuary to come home to, the laboratory where they find the space and freedom to experiment with space and freedom. This time resulting in album with a level of trance and improvisation higher than ever before.

'A new beginning', as it goes during opening track Broken People. 'Everything fallen down/ Into pieces/ Scattered around' while picking up the pieces, STADT does so with a teasing swagger, straight from the hips.

First single 'Nothing Twice' is the 'epic' (dixit the band) which functions as both the key to and the outline of the album. 'Afraid Of Being Fed Up' is a murky jungle boogie, with 'Amplified' they cross into the spheres of Yeasayer and early Grizzly Bear, and 'Thuissfeer' is prog rock made in Disneyland.

'We're addicted to the new', the band says. 'Everything we produce has to be in a constant state of flux'.

All in all, the name STADT is manifold, a place of constant, ever changing expression. Nothing twice, as they say.

Theres always something up with The Germans. An elusive quintet whose music has been balancing between pleasantly mundane and absolute racket since 2002. 4 years after the release of their instant cult classic 'Are Animals Different', followed by an equally legendary tour, the new chapter is upon us. On their new album 'Sexuality' (Unday Records), the band challenge the cult of celebrity and self-promotion by displaying their ugly as well as their sexy. The tone is confusingly kinky. Raw, at times uncomfortable and even abrasive, but also sultry, sweaty and exotic. Sexuality quoi, captured on tape, undisguised, by producer Micha Volders (Meteor Musik). Primitive percussion, tatty guitars, a lewd Hammond and many other instruments play a major role in this hot mush of psych, easy-listening, Flemish polyphony and cocktail jazz. Blixa Bargeld meets Tito Puente (and they end up in bed together). The Germans are (in random order of sexyness): Jakob Ampe, Vincent Cauwels, Lennert Jacobs, Timothy Jacobs en Boris Zeebroek.

The legendary Dutch rock band The Scene released their successful album Blauw in 1990. The album which includes two of the band's greatest classics, title track 'Blauw' and 'Iedereen Is Van De Wereld', was enthusiastically received and in 1991 awarded with an Edison.

Blauw is available as a limited first pressing of 1.000 individually numbered copies on blue vinyl. The package includes a insert with song lyrics and photo's.

Third Man and Nonesuch Records announced the release of the new album, The Party Ain't Over, from Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Wanda Jackson earlier this fall. They are now proud to bring us the single "Thunder On The Mountain" b/w "Dust On The Bible". Known around the globe as "The Queen Of Rock" and "The First Lady Of Rockabilly," Wanda Jackson has joined with a new friend and producer Jack White, to bring us this latest taste of her signature flavor. The tracks feature Jack White. Jack Lawrence (The Dead Weather/Raconteurs), Carl Broemel (My Morning Jacket), Patrick Keeler (Raconteurs), Ashley Monroe, Jackson Smith and Karen Elson, to name a few. "Thunder On The Mountain" is a particularly exceptional track. Originally penned by Bob Dylan and chosen for Mrs. Jackson by the poet himself - his rockabilly fever dream is given new life by the songstress.

The latest release on FBNM, 291out - Habbanera is thematically inspired by the 1982 Italian film score, "No Grazie il Caffè Mi Rende Nervoso" "No Thanks, Coffee Makes Me Nervous".

It was originally composed by James Senese and directed by Lodovico Gasparini, "Habbanera" has only previously been released on Senese's self titled LP in 1983.

This four tracker includes two new versions of the main title theme "Habbanera" and two remixes by the two Italian pioneers of house music and the balearic sound; Leo Mas and Fabrice.

291out "Original Version" is a cover of the main score theme, which also features on Senese's 1983 LP; the "Alternate Version" is also taken from the movie, but from a different scene, which has the same melody of the opening theme but with a different rhythm, never having been released before and completely reassembled by 291out.

Leo Mas & Fabrice provide two different cuts, one pitched-down boogie slow jam and one 4/4 dance-floor banger.

Dido Still On My Mind

Originally released in 1968, and selling less than 500 copies - according to Robert Fripp's royalty statements -- The Cheerful Insanity of Giles, Giles, & Fripp is, of course, the pre-cursor to King Crimson. Drawing its influence from folk, pop, classical, and religious music, the album is a masterpiece on par with the greatest records that the British psychedelic and progressive movements had to offer.

At this point, In Flames are less of a band than they are a musical institution in the heavy music world. Since helping create Sweden's legendary 'Gothenberg Sound' three decades ago to their current status as heavy music monoliths, the act have constantly eschewed trends in order to forge their own musical path. This is evident on their 13th full-length I, The Mask, which sees them reuniting with multi Grammy-nominated producer Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance, Motörhead), who also produced 2016's Battles, in order to further redefine their sound.

Unlike previous recordings, this time around Fridén and Gelotte holed up in Los Angeles for three weeks prior to the production of I, The Mask, and came up with a bulk of the songs during those sessions. 'For Battles I wrote a lot of the material at home first but for this one, Anders and I really wanted to just get in a room together and see where it would take us,' Gelotte explains, adding that Benson would frequently drop by and act as a filter for their creativity. 'I think this process worked really well because a lot of the lyrics fed off the music or Anders would come up with a really powerful line and it would inspire a riff, so there was a lot of symbiosis between us in the songwriting.' From there the duo fleshed out the arrangements with guitarist Niclas Engelin, bassist Bryce Paul Newman and previous drummer Joe Rickard and then spent two months tracking the songs. (I, The Mask is also the last recording to feature Rickard who was subsequently replaced by Tanner Wayne who played on the track '(This Is Our) House.') Finally, the album was mixed by Chris Lord-Alge, who has worked with everyone from Cheap Trick to Linkin Park and mastered by Ted Jensen (Pantera, Eagles, Guns N' Roses).

The result is a massive-sounding album that showcases why In Flames are one of the biggest metal bands in the world. From the way acoustic guitars give way to to anthemic riffing on the power ballad 'Call My Name' to the relentless riffing on 'Burn' and sweetly syncopated groove of 'I Am Above,' I, The Mask sees the band stretching out musically and crafting music that's as catchy as it is crushing. Lyrically, I, The Mask is in many ways a social commentary on the state of the world when it comes to isolation, loneliness and the way technology has subverted our need for genuine human connection.

Admittedly if you listen to 1996's The Jester Race next to I, The Mask, there are marked musical differences, but through the course of In Flames' output you can trace their evolution and hear how they managed to remain relevant by never getting complacent. That said, ultimately In Flames are a live band and they can't wait to get back on the road and share this new collection of songs with fans, whether they've supported the band for decades or are recent converts to their sound. 'I love the act of creating something from nothing and then getting to travel the world and play these songs and see how they affect people,' Fridén summarizes. 'It's extremely rewarding to hear how a certain song moves someone and then you talk to someone else and learn that it affected them in a profoundly different way. The dynamic between the creator and the fans and what they bring to the table is such an amazing feeling, so that's a big part of our drive. To make something and share it with the world, that's what we were meant to do.'

Jouis return with their second album 'Mind Bahn', their first album for None More Records following up 2015's self-released 'Dojo'. Jouis are a three piece from Brighton, UK comprising Joe Woodham (vocals, bass, guitars) Louis Pavlo (vocals, keyboard, synths and piano) and Adam Johnson (vocals, drums and percussion).

'Mind Bahn' is 9 tracks of groove laden psychedelic folk rock. Drawing on influences as far and wide as the British jazz-tinged folk scene of Nick Drake and John Martyn, the contemporary Canterbury Scene of groups like Syd Arthur and a sprinkling of the 70's scene of groups like Hatfield & The North and Caravan. Mixed in with the folk and progressive influences, comes hints of BADBADNOTGOOD, Khruangbin and Polar Bear in the tight rhythms, the space of Debussy's piano pieces and the experimental electronica of Stereolab and early Broadcast.

Jouis' sound melds these eclectic influences with their own mellifluous West Coast harmonies, inimitably skewed grooves and ambitious, spaced-out musical explorations. The first single is 'Sinking Statues' a riff led, groove heavy banger, and will be available as a digital single in January. Some key tracks to dig in to include the luscious opener Collapse Rewind, with its signature Jouis harmonies, circular bass and drum groove and spacious guitar which sets the scene for the record brilliantly. Turtle shows Jouis at their grooviest peak, with a killer Rhodes-led groove rolling underneath more incredible harmonies. There's also the opportunity to hear the band wig-out on the sense-defying, time-warping groove of Medievil. Lyrically, the album's theme is life itself. Birth, death and round again. Take a trip on the Mind Bahn, a flowing train of thought through Jouis' collective mind.

Naked Lunch are an English band formed in 1979, by Tony Mayo. Later joined by, Mick Clarke. In preparation to play live further members were advertised for and Tim Yorke, Paul Nicholas Davies and Cliff Chapman joined and then, in 1981, by Mark Irving who replaced Tim.

The band was one of the first fully synth based groups, and as such were featured on the Some Bizzare Album alongside, Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, Blancmange and The The.

A brief history of the band includes the fact that as early as 1979 they performed in a show alongside the likes of Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft, Cabaret Voltaire, Fad Gadget, B-Movie and Clock DVA, organised by the band and Stevo Pearce (Some Bizzare Records). The band undertook the Naked Lunch's 'Electronic Indoctrination Tour' in 1980 which included a show at Leeds Futurama Festival. Naked Lunch then set about helping Pearce find artists and recordings to make up the Some Bizzare Album to which the band itself contributed "La Femme" (a song originally called "Le Femme" but Phonogram who released the album was licensed to change it to the grammatically correct French, missing the point of the androgyny of the electronic music scene and that the song was about that).

After a parting with Pearce, Naked Lunch became managed by Ramkup with the now 'infamous' single, "Rabies" being released, though it suffered from a ban on daytime radio play due to the title, it received good airplay and support from the likes of John Peel and Nicky Horne on their nighttime shows. Line-up changes continued before the band split in 1981 with Mayo retaining the name Naked Lunch. A second version of the band emerged as a live act until 1985. Naked Lunch were then resurrected in 2010 and continue to this day!
