Willie Dixon - I Am The Blues

Chicago Bluesman Willie Dixon was perhaps best known for his song writing. He wrote or co-wrote over 500 songs and his songs have been recorded by some of the best-known blues musicians of his era, including Muddy Waters, Magic Sam, Howlin’ Wolf, Little Walter, and Sonny Boy Williamson. On top of that, he involved himself in the production of their records, selecting the songs and the musicians, overseeing the rehearsals, etc.

On this 1970 LP, the quintessential blues songwriter performs his own tunes - each one a classic: “I’m Your Hoochie Coochie Man”, “The Little Red Rooster”, “ Spoonful” and of course “Back Door Man”, to name but a few! Long overdue, the album was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1986, whereas Willie Dixon was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. Finally receiving recognition for his huge role in shaping modern blues

Classic album from Italian post-rock collective port-royal pressed on vinyl the first time....180gm transparent blue 2LP w/download.

Flares was the debut album from Genoa post-rock quintet port-royal. The album was initially released in 2005 by the quality-minded UK indie label Resonant Recordings.

Flares has become a watermark of the more contemporary amalgam of ambient, electronica and post-rock. And, is considered a classic of the genre.

Spintink Music stylistically name-dropped Eno and Explosions in the Sky when describing Flares. Tiny Mix Tapes commented that Flares "reveal(s) moments of unde-niable brilliance." and Exclaim! remarked, "this music is both inherently simple while being intricately complex and deserves to be placed in your stereo." "Intoxicating," "rewarding," and "masterpiece" are just some of the adjectives used to describe Flares upon its release.

To commemorate the album's 15th anniversary, port-royal have teamed up with their current partner of ten years, the Oakland based n5MD, to bring you Flares on vinyl for the first time. Remastered and remixed explicitly for vinyl from the original stems. Flares 15th-anniversary edition will be out March 27th on double 180-gram trans-parent blue vinyl.

Medical Records continues to cut the strings holding it in 1 or 2 genres by presenting something just a tad askew. Hailing from the underground Los Angeles scene in the mid 80s arose a couple of musicians that created some of the most off-kilter, complex and yet exquisitely crucial art rock music that no one has ever heard. Featuring the key duo of Brad Laner (Savage Republic and much later Medicine, Electric Company, etc) and David Chrisman (3 Day Stubble), Steaming Coils was a project that also involved multiple other like minds from the L.A.F.M.S. (Los Angeles Free Music Society) amongst other misfits and kooks. They released a total of 3 albums including Never Creak (1986), The Tarkington Table (also 1987) and finally 1988's Breaded. Technically, there is also an unreleased 4th album as well... For Breaded, the Steaming Coils honed their craft into a well-oiled but no less experimental machine. Featuring James Grisby (Motor Totemist Guild), Don Bolles (The Germs, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti), Tom Recchion (LAFMS) plus a slew of others. The tunes almost transcend description but culminate into a perfect pop album completely drenched in free-form passages, cut and paste tape experiments, atypical song structures and other elements that are equally difficult to make easy comparisons. The first track Carne Del Sol completely plunges the listener into it with backwards noise guitar, shifting tempos and lovely harmonious melodies to suck you in. The 2nd track Singing Notice manages to take you through a psychedelic circus motif whilst following a nice Beatles-esqu pop song framework interspersed with bits of other noise and found sound. One of the other absolute standout tracks is the 5th track Notes which is just as catchy and upbeat as it is hypnotic and freeform. Don't get us wrong or be frightened, this album is an intensely engaging listen and managed to walk that razor's edge between pop music and progressive experimental "inaccessible music". The original version(s) are all long out of print (original CD and LP reissue years later). Presented in a full color jacket with original front cover art (chromosomal collage, if you will) on high quality 180gram colored vinyl. For this special edition, a bonus 7" is included with tracks from the unreleased 4th album (featuring Jim Goodall of Flying Burrito Brothers and Medicine as well as Eddie Ruscha from Secret Circuit) and also on colored wax. Written and recorded by singer-songwriter and frontman Sid Simons along with contributions from his band mates at his Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn home, Shade is on the other side combines elements of fragile folk and delicate art-rock to create ethereal chamber-pop songs that fearlessly revel in Simons most private thoughts. Musically, the album exists somewhere between monumental British statements such as All Things Must Pass and The Man Who, where quiet and tender folk meets dramatic guitar-pop. Finland’s Hexvessel return to Svart Records with new album Kindred, set for release on the Spring Equinox, 20th of March 2020. Psychedelic forest folk-rockers Hexvessel will release their new nature-mystic opus, Kindred, via Svart Records on the 20th of March 2020. Taking a darker and more esoteric path, Kindred sees Hexvessel re-forge their eclectic melting cauldron or vessel of sound into a potent hex of spell-binding songcraft. Blues-laden psych-rock and progressive structures harken back to King Crimson, giving way to dark earthen balladry reminiscent of early Nick Cave and the doom-laden atmospheres of Dead Can Dance. The band returned to their original studio in Tampere, Finland, where they recorded their cult classic No Holier Temple, which fused Hexvessel’s folk roots with an occult undercurrent, with the new album mastered by John Davis (The Killers / Gorillaz / Led Zeppelin / Lana Del Rey) in the UK.

Through Kindred’s 10 song rites of passage, Hexvessel cover Coils Fire Of The Mind live from a mental institution and delve into the Druidic sacrificial swamps with songs like Bog Bodies, which conjures the deep Lynchian night with muted trumpet and foggy rhodes piano. Adorned by cover artwork by artists Thomas Hooper (who has worked for Neurosis, Converge and Doomriders) and Richey Beckett (who has created work for Metallica, Foo Fighters, Robert Plant), Kindred is an album which calls you on a journey, both intimate and richly enlightening. The first single for Kindred, entitled Demian will be released on the 22nd of March 2020. A sub-arctic occult blues number, with western-noir guitars, Demianis a paean to the work of Herman Hesse and is about opening up our subconscious to reach our human potential. Singer/song-writer Mat McNerney says Demian is in a sense the true message in everything we do with Hexvessel. It’s about finding the sense of holiness within and discovering the magic in the universe, which is within us all. It’s about breaking on through to the other side.

The White Buffalo - On The Widow's Walk

‘On The Widow’s Walk’ is the new studio album from The White Buffalo, the touring and recording persona of Jake Smith – US singer, songwriter, guitarist, teller of tales; the Emmy nominee whose voice – a timber-shakin’ baritone of gravitas and gravel – seems fuelled by a greater truth. Of the half-dozen albums thus far released under The White Buffalo banner, this latest 11-tracker – a loosely linked collection of dark thrills produced by Shooter Jennings, who also provides piano and keys – is the most collaborative and organic, the most sonically round.

‘On The Widow’s Walk’ is available to pre-order from February 21st, signalling the start of a new worldwide relationship with Snakefarm Records, a young label within the Universal Music Group spotlighting roots, country rock, blues & Americana. From the beginning, Oregon-born Smith has wilfully side-stepped genre, touching on a variety of musical threads – from Americana to punk, from brooding folk to driving rock ‘n’ roll – whilst maintaining a strong, signature style. His spontaneous delivery and narrative lyrics are at the coal-black heart of it all, instilling the songs – effectively, mini-movies – with a cinematic, hand-crafted quality, and this very much holds true for ‘On The Widow’s Walk’. “I was floored by Jake’s voice and his lyricism,” recalls Shooter. “It was intimidating. But we had a really good time igniting our inspirations together. Jake is one of the best out there.

I’m honoured that I got the chance to make this record come to life with him and his band. They let me into the fold and we made some fine music together. Long live the Jelly Crew!” The ’Jelly Crew’ in question, in addition to Smith, comprises drummer Matt Lynott and bassist Christopher Hoffee, also responsible for many of the guitar parts. They recorded as live and as first-take as possible, using violin and pedal steel where required. With an eclectic history to his illustrious name, Shooter simply has no interest in playing it safe; he sides with a diverse selection of talent, and his collaboration with The White Buffalo has produced a special body of work that is stripped and spiritual and sounds just like the artist.

At one point, the idea of a concept album was considered, but Smith didn’t want to leave out quality songs just because they might not fit a specific concept; hence, ‘On The Widow’s Walk’ has water and the ocean as underlying rather than dominant themes, a sense of longing too, something reflected in songs such as ‘Sycamore’, ‘River Of Love And Loss’ and the title track; it’s there in the front cover artwork, too – a portrait of Smith by UK artist Jack Browning. Other subjects tackled include living for the moment (‘Problem Solution’ / ‘No History’), the soulless march of technology (‘Cursive’), the indiscriminate force of mother nature (‘Faster Than Fire’), plus what happens when the moral compass spins wildly out of control (‘The Rapture’, also lead single and lyric video).

“It’s a twisted, primitive tale of an unrelenting thirst for blood,” explains Smith. “With ‘The Rapture’, I wanted to blur the lines between animal and man, to create a tension of moral restraint and unbridled evil.” From sinister through to plaintive, the overall feel is of all parts supporting a wider view under the album’s intriguing title, first mentioned by Lynott. “We were driving through an East Coast seaport town and I asked what the little balconies were on top of the buildings,” recollects Smith. “Matt explained that the wives of the sailors would pace around on the roof-tops longing for their husbands to come home safely.

There’s so much romance in that, the Widow’s Walk, plus of course the possibility of disturbing and dramatic things taking place. “I guess what I’ve tried to do with this new album is to represent a broad range of emotions. There’s dark moments here, more uplifting moments, questioning moments, it’s not just one thing. Also, I like to put some confusion into my songs, which is a very human element, I think.”

‘On The Widow’s Walk’ is a compelling, gimmick-free statement from an artist, now based in Southern California, whose activity between the musical lines has seen his star very much on the rise, playing to a million followers worldwide, achieving over 200 million streams to date, and securing a Top 10 spot in the TV / Film Syncs Chart for 2019. This debut album by America (1972) is considered as a folk-pop classic, filled with a great collection of memorable songs that proves their influence on acts as The Eagles and Dan Fogelberg. Using vocal harmonies on “Sandman” and “Children” and an intricate interplay of acoustic guitars is for the period of time highly ambitious. The hits of this album are of course the widely known “A Horse With No Name”, “I Need You” and again “Sandman”. But also the buoyantly charming “Three Roses”, the yearningly lovely “Rainy Day” and the quietly ringing “Clarice” make this album as one of their best and recommendable for any kind of music fan. A classic to own and a stepping stone into the world of folk- pop music.

Martha and Loesje Maieu are known as the spellbinding backing singers and synth players of Antwerp's finest Flying Horseman, but their own band remains their main focus. And with that band, they have just finished an extraordinary new album.
On 'Lacuna', their haunting dream pop is perfected, backed by Alfredo Bravo's propulsive tribal drumming and colored by Milan Warmoeskerken's otherworldly guitar. Studio wizard Dijf Sanders (Teddiedrum, The Violent Husbands) coproduced and mixed the album. The sisters' songcraft and strong melodies remain at the core of every track, though on Lacuna the emphasis shifts towards rhythm and a coherent sound. This is a band at the top of their game, exploring the common ground between indie pop and electronica. The new record is undoubtedly their most consistent and simply strongest effort to date.

Wieder einmal steht Tame Impala-Sänger und -Mastermind Kevin Parker als zentrale Figur im Schaffensprozess der neuen Songs im Vordergrund. Beinahe das komplette Album wurde von ihm in diversen Studios, Hotelzimmern, Flugzeugen und Häusern rund um die Welt aufgenommen und produziert. Nach dem Motto 'never change a winning team' setzte Kevin wieder auf die Kompetenz von Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, MGMT) an den Mixern. Der Sound von "Lonerism" erfindet sich nicht komplett neu, sondern scheint eher neu-skizziert und erstreckt sich über weitere Ebenen als zuvor. Die größte Neuerung stellen die Synthesizer dar, die kosmische und sphärische Formen in nahezu jedem Track hinterlassen, zusätzlich zu den immer noch schneidenden Gitarrenriffs, dem taumelndem Bass, den steinigen Schlagzeugrumpeleien und Kevins einzigartiger Art zu Singen. Mit "Lonerism" machen Tame Impala den verdienten und konsequenten Quantensprung nach Vorne auf dem Weg, auf den sie sich mit "Innerspeaker" begeben haben.

Originally released in 1978, Music By William Eaton is a private-press album from the accomplished experimental stringed instrument builder. The atmospheric recording techniques, mixed with a hint of Fahey/Takoma-lineage make for a listening experience akin to the mountainscape drawing represented on the album cover. The experience may seem simple at first, but like any great trip in nature, new details consistently reveal themselves upon each listen.

“When I started building instruments, playing guitar took on a whole new dimension. From the conception to the birth of each instrument, new layers of meaning unfolded. Cycles, connections and interdependencies became apparent as I contemplated the growth of trees from seed to old age, and the transformation from raw wood to the building of a musical instrument. I sought out quiet natural environments to play and listen to the “voice” of my 6 string, 12 string, 26 string (Elesion Harmonium) and double neck quadraphonic electric guitar. Deep canyons contained a beautiful resonant quality and echo. A starlit night with a full moon provided all the reflection and endless space by which to project music into the cosmos. The sound of a bubbling stream and singing birds added a natural symphonic tapestry to a melody or chord pattern. As I perceived it, everything was participating in a serendipitous dance. Everything was part of the music.

During this time, I decided to record an instrumental album of music. The idea was simple; it would be a series of tone poems with no titles or any information attached, only the words ‘Music by William Eaton.’ While some of the songs evolved out of composed chord progressions, most of the songs were played spontaneously, only on the occasion of the recording. These improvised songs haven’t been played since.” -- William Eaton
