There is an exciting energy currently bubbling within the Meanjin/Brisbane music scene and Charlie’s debut work as a producer has reflected this instinctively. Recorded performances from local jazz ensembles, his vocalist singer as well as his own drumming were utilised as samples throughout the EP.

Surely this can’t be his brand-new double-vinyl LP journey into sound which finally realises an ambition to create a cut n paste opus held since his pre-turntable days of pause-button mixes? It certainly can! The project comes in four parts corresponding to four sides of 12″ vinyl which weigh in at approximately fifteen minutes each and each side of which took around a month to make!

Man, that is epic! When did he ever get the time and concentration to put such a beast together? Wait – are we talking about yet another Krash Slaughta lockdown project? We are! And this bad boy stitches together vintage vocal loops, rare breaks, library records and obscure samples along with remixes of Stetsasonic, O.C., Tanya Winley, Jurassic 5, Edan, Nas, ODB, Gang Starr, Super Lover Cee & Casanova Rud (any one of which would be straight fire on 7″or 12″) along with pretty much whatever the hell else he wanted to put on there. Pressed at 45 rpm, this one features two differently-coloured slabs of wax: one mauve and one blue while even the centre labels and cover art get in on the cut n paste vibe having been created by hand by Krash homie Saleem Andrew McGroarty. As with previous such efforts from the KS camp, there will be no re-press! Sleep at your peril.

With one foot planted in jazz and the other in the township groove of Mbaqanga, saxophonist Sello Mmutung was a powerful crossover figure in the history of popular music in South Africa. Using the stage name Bra Sello, meaning “brother” and used as a term of affection and respect in the jazz community, he came up in the era of shellac 78s as an exponent of the 1960s sax jive sound that brought the swinging rhythm of kwela into the domain of South African jazz. Despite the injection of American rhythm and blues into South African pop in the late-1960s, Bra Sello’s first releases on vinyl on the CBS label saw him backed by the group Abafana Bentuthuko and holding down an unapologetic township sound.

Joining the independent Soweto label under producer Cambridge Matiwane in the mid-1970s, Bra Sello recorded two records in the hit-making bump jive style popularised by serious jazz musician Dollar Brand on the one hand and prolific studio group the Movers, operating in funk and soul territory, on the other. Blending modern American and traditional African elements into joyful hip-swinging rhythms, Butterfly (1975) and The Battle of Disco (1977) reflect the vivacity of urban life in South Africa and document an era when dance music was performed by bands as extended jams laced with jaw-dropping solos. With music trends shifting dramatically in the late-1970s, the title of The Battle of Disco was an ironic call to arms in response to the territory that group musicians were beginning to cede to synthesisers and DJs.

For enthusiasts of African music from the 1970s, a full appreciation of the continent’s output is incomplete without South Africa’s pop-jazz sound providing a regional counterpoint to the funk experimentation of West Africa. Reissued for the very first time, Bra Sello returns in 2023 with limited replica editions from Afrodelic using master tape sources from the As-Shams/The Sun collection. Afrodelic’s unique edition of Butterfly features a previously unreleased track on Side B.

Composed, produced and arranged by Evangelia VS, the artist behind Abyss X, Freedom Doll is the culmination of a year of emotional unloading through songwriting, offering an introspective journey into the ocean of her mind. Produced and recorded between an artist residency near the Mayan jungle in Mexico and her Berlin home, the album chronicles transformations the performer tackled mentally during the writing process, tracing the rollercoaster of falling in love during the pandemic, as well as the pleasures and tribulations of womanhood.

Freedom Doll encapsulates the romantic escapade between her voice and the guitar. The amalgamation of seduction, sexual tension, vulnerability and assertiveness pulses throughout the entirety of the album, spiralling out of the cracks spawned from her vocal chords. From the twirling dance between her lush harmonies and the progressions of the acoustic guitar in tracks such as Ascend and From Hot to Cold, to the explosive confrontation between the metallic and operatic qualities of her voice, the searing sound of the electric guitar in industrial rock / psychedelic anthems such as Torture Grove and Banyana and the cathartic momentum found in the gospel inclined chants in A CHEW - Freedom Doll untethers the dramatics and theatricality that defines Abyss X’s vocal performance and music production, while maintaining the sensual vibrations of her creative essence.

Freedom Doll is the encapsulation of the Minoan woman, the elusive harlequin tiptoeing her way through the “circus of terror” that is living and loving her way through womanhood. With this visual reference, Abyss X pays tribute to her ancestors and their groundbreaking ancient artistry. The back cover of the vinyl features a reiteration of depictions of bulls leaping found in Minoan frescoes; an inherently male cultural act that in the ancient Minoan times presumably gave expression to a tension that underlies man's somewhat tenuous mastery of nature. Freedom Doll’s artwork challenges this preconceived notion through an eco-feminist approach, bringing the Minoan woman slash Gaia in the seat of the bull leaper, taming the unhinged and predominantly male earth - threatening human force.

Celebrating two decades of IF Music's scrupulous curation through its record shop, a thriving website, album reissues and compilations in collaboration with BBE Music, parties and radio shows, “IF Music Presents You Need This: 20 years” is a 9 track, double vinyl LP beautifully put together by Jean-Claude. Coming, as it does, as the 9th release in the “You Need This” series of compilations curated by Jean-Claude, this album features music that ranges from 1980 (Christine Schaller's spectacular “Fidji”) to exclusive tracks from the likes of Emanative & Liz Elensky (‘Fall Into Me’) and Tenderlonious (‘Dennison Point’) which both bring us up to the present day. It is Jean-Claude's remarkable ear for music that, as with all the previous “You Need This” releases, creates a wonderfully coherent journey through the decades across the four sides of this masterpiece of a compilation album. The Nashville, Tennessee, garage rock group were signed as teenagers to the prestigious XL in the UK and Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace label in the US, with whom they released two widely acclaimed albums. They went on to tour with the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Sonic Youth, Le Tigre etc and have been cited as influences for groups such as Paramore and Big Joanie. This is the first new album in 15 years.

Having released several solo projects, numerous collaborations and a series of LP's, EP's and singles with his band Ruby Rushton that centred on original compositions, he wanted to take a moment to focus his energy on exploring the classic jazz material that has inspired him over the years.

Players like Jackie McLean, Duke Pearson, Clifford Jordan and Wayne Shorter have all played significant roles in Tenderlonious' life and provide a constant source of inspiration for his development as a musician and composer. 'You Know I Care' is a tribute to those musicians and for this reason a landmark album - his first recording that purely delves into the American jazz songbook. Plus it's a way of encouraging a new generation of jazz listeners to explore some of the most significant contributors, and in some cases unsung heroes, to this everevolving genre.

This long player clearly follows in the footsteps of Tenderlonious' spiritual jazz hero's, paying particular attention to the original performers of these six masterpieces - Jackie McClean, Clifford Jordan, Wayne Shorter and Duke Pearson. This is also the first time that Tenderlonious has recorded on alto saxophone, a more recent love affair for this talented multi-instrumentalist, and hopefully the first of many.

There is something for everyone on this album, from brooding ballads to fullsteam ahead modal delights - and an opportunity to enjoy a fresh take on these timeless compositions.

Reissue of the 2011 album Tao of the Dead by American alternative rock band ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead. First time available on vinyl since its release year. Features a replica of the original comic book insert. Tao of the Dead is their seventh album. The band stripped down to its core four-piece lineup for the record, deviating from the past two records that featured a filled-out six-piece band. This resulted in a stripped-down record with heavy emphasis on guitar. It’s a two-part record, each side with a specific musical tuning; Part One in D and Part Two in F. The album can be listened to as 16 different movements or two lengthy tracks. Part One: Tao Of The Dead is split into eleven tracks, whereas Part Two: Strange News From Another Planet is five songs combined into one. Lead singer Conrad Keely described the album's composition; "It's the way I listened to albums when I was a kid, seeing as some of my favorite records were Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Yes' Relayer and Close to the Edge... I always liked listening to records that were just a continuous piece, like an orchestra or a symphony."

Die bereits mehrfach für die GRAMMYs nominierte brasilianische Sängerin Bebel Gilberto veröffentlicht ihr mittlerweile achtes Studioalbum 'João'. Das Album ist eine Sammlung von Liedern ihres Vaters João Gilberto, der weithin als Erfinder und Wegbereiter des Bossa Novas gilt und 2019 nach einer 70-jährigen Musikkarriere verstarb. Bebel begann schon als kleines Kind mit ihm zu singen und die Lieder, die sie nun in neuem Gewand präsentiert, begleiten sie schon ihr ganzes Leben - 'João' ist ihr ganz persönlicher Liebesbrief an João Gilberto und seine Musik.

KEY GLOCK is a protégé of Young Dolph & who rose to fame in 2017 with his mixtape “Glock Season.” The artist signed to Young Dolph’s label in 2017 and their collaborative album, “Dum and Dummer,” reached #8 on the Billboard 200. As a lead artist, Key Glock has since had one certified platinum single (“Russian Cream”) and 4 certified gold singles (“Since6ix,” “Gang Shit No Lame Shit,” “Mr. Glock,” & “Ambition for Cash”). His debut studio album, “Yellow Tape,” peaked at #14 on the Billboard 200, while the follow-up, “Yellow Tape 2,” rose to #7 on the same chart. A 5-track EP, “”PRE5L,” was released in November 2022 & included the hit track, “Jigsaw.” He is the cousin by marriage of Young Dolph, who sadly passed in November 2021. In a since-deleted IG post, Key Glock called Young Dolph “my lefthand man, my brother, my cousin, and my mentor.”

Mal-One was always fascinated by the story of the legendary Gibson Les Paul Custom guitar, that Steve Jones, the guitarist of the Sex Pistols came to use. It was like a talisman object that got handed down from Sylvain Sylvain, the guitarist of the New York Dolls to Mr Jones. The story goes that Malcolm McLaren, during his brief stint working with the New York Dolls, acquired the guitar and carried it back to England. For monies owned to him for his work and on a promise that Sylvain Sylvain, was to come over to England to work with his new prodigies, the Sex Pistols. The guitar would be waiting for him.
Well history tells us that Sylvain Sylvain, did not make that trip and Steve Jones’s temporary use, became permanent. The guitar looked great with it’s two girly stickers ( decals ) and became a signature look for Steve Jones. Adding to this the story that Steve Jones stole Mal-One’s bike when he was seven years old. That story had to be told. Punk Art Poetry, that turned into a song. Hope you enjoy the indulgence.

From Ōtautahi, Aotearoa (Christchurch, New Zealand) comes a collaboration between James Barrett, best known for his work in techno on Perc Trax, Mord, South London Analogue Material, and KAOS/OAKS as Keepsakes, and Henry Nicol, a founder of industrial-freak outfit Loghorn Breed who’s work as a member of Dog Power saw his music signed to legendary Aotearoa indie label Flying Nun. As CUT 989 the two bring their respective musical worlds in to collision,
producing a debut EP representing a mutated hybrid of industrial, post-punk, techno, and experimental music tied together with cynical lyricism musing on anxiety, human nature and the crumbling state of politics and society in the modern era.

The A1 starts with bass driven drum hits and rolling metallic percussion combine with booming vocals and looping dark synth melodies in ‘The Dominant Trough’. The A2 follows with ‘Castle Of Doubt’, where sombre atmospheres and hand-drum rhythms come together with melancholy Lyra-8 refrains and verbed-out vocals to complete the first side of the record.

‘TPOTT’ launches the flip and picks up the energy with gated reverb toms, weighty kick drums, heavy bass sweeps and vocals ranging from enraged screaming to faint whispers in a driving slab of electronic bitterness. The B2 closes this debut offering with ‘Skin’ – a mournful bass-heavy piece featuring tribalistic drumming, experimental percussions, gloomy synth work and lyrics pondering political betrayal.

Effortlessly dismantling the barriers between R&B, soul, funk, disco and jazz sounds, MF Robots present long player ‘Break The Wall’, on BBE Music. Astonishing musicianship, pristine production and top-tier songwriting, ‘Break The Wall’ immediately calls to mind those iconic American rhythm sections of the 70s and 80s. The music is energising, uplifting and the potent result of a highly accomplished musical partnership maturing, growing and hitting their stride together in lock-step. Jan Kincaid and Dawn Joseph met as members of one of the UK’s most successful Acid Jazz bands, which influenced Mark Ronson, D’Angelo, Jamiroquai, Erykah Badu and The Roots to name a few. Founding the Brand New Heavies was an important chapter for Jan, but once he and vocalist and songwriting partner Dawn began working together, the chemistry was instant and irresistible. It was time to turn the page, and soon MF Robots was born. “When we made our first album, we didn’t have a band as such. We basically made a lot of the record at home and called on other musicians as and when we needed them. Our sound was developing organically, and when we finally released the record to great critical acclaim, it was time to get out on the road,” says Jan. “We put together a band of like-minded young musicians, playing intimate gigs and big festivals all over Europe and beyond, growing tight as a unit, so that when it came time to think about making this, our second album, we knew we had an extra level of musicianship full of personality that could realise our vision.” Inviting band members Alex Montaque (keys), Naz Adamson (bass), Mark Beaney (guitar), Jack Birchwood (trumpet), Ben Treacher (sax) to improvise and contribute their own ideas over song-sketches laid out by Jan and Dawn gives ‘Break The Wall’ a special sense of off-the-cuff brilliance. There’s guest performances from bassist Gail Ann Dorsey (‘The Love It Takes’, ‘Make Me Happy’) and guitarist Cory Wong ('Shine', 'Make Me Happy'), the former a top-flight session player who’s collaborated with Lenny Kravitz and David Bowie among others, the latter a member of the incredible Vulfpeck collective and an accomplished solo artist in his own right.

This live album — released on vinyl for the first time — is made up of three European dates in 2001, and introduced Shorter’s ‘Footprint Quartet’: pianist Danilo Perez, bassist John Patitucci and drummer Brian Blade.

All are in top form, especially on challenging reimaginations of the title track and ‘Masquelero’, both from his time with the 1960’s Miles Davis Quintet.

Released in 1965, this is Gladys Knight and The Pips’ first and only studio album for Maxx Records. Gladys and this family foursome signed with Larry Maxwell’s label in 1964, and after several successful singles, Maxwell was responsible for taking the group to Motown. Pressed here for the first time in almost six decades, 12 soul sides full of grace and grit, remastered and reissued on heavyweight virgin vinyl.

CHRIS CARTER & COSEY FANNI TUTTI’s remastered limited edition vinyl series continues on 4 August 2023 with the release of Technø Primitiv (1985), Trust (1989) and Pagan Tango (1991) – all available on vinyl for the first time since their original release. The remastered albums will be available on coloured vinyl, each with a printed inner sleeve of archival photos, via CTI. Elemental 7, Muzik Fantastique!, and Feral Vapours of The Silver Ether were released earlier this year, and the series has seen many of Chris & Cosey’s influential albums available on vinyl for the first time, giving listeners a new opportunity to revisit some of their celebrated catalogue.

The remastered releases for August includes 1985’s Technø Primitiv, originally released on Rough Trade, the album is from Chris & Cosey’s whiplash minimal ‘80s icy synth period.

They walked a tightrope between underground and mainstream hip-hop, and toured alongside rap peers as well as punk rockers on the Vans Warped Tour. With double the pleasure of your average hip-hop group – two DJs and producers (Cut Chemist and DJ Nu-Mark); and four MCs (Chali 2na, Akil, Marc 7 and Zaakir aka Soup) – they brought the late 1970s “unison MC” style of pioneering groups like the Fantastic 5 and the Force MCs to a new generation. Even more surprisingly, they did so out of Los Angeles, whose hip-hop flavors generally leaned towards Gangsta, G-Funk or Electro lines. Musically inventive and lyrically forward-thinking, each song on Quality Control is a new adventure, exploring engaging territory, delivered via one of the best live hip-hop shows fans had seen in years. From singles like the strutting groove of the title track to the throwback doo-wop samples on “The Influence” and the catchy, keyboard groove-driven “World of Entertainment (WOE Is Me),” to deeper album tracks like the lyrical gymnastics of “Jurass Finish First” and the thought-provoking “Lausd,” Jurassic 5 consistently stepped to the plate and their fans responded in kind, nearly pushing the album to Gold status. Add the innovative DJ-and-sample workout which closes out the album, “Swing Set,” and you have one of the 2000s’ most unique and solid full-length platters.

“Crazy for the disco dance" was born from the collaboration of two musician producers, the "In da club" with Theo Spagna.

The request for a song to be produced came after the two grammys, from ASCAP Americana, assigned to Theo Spagna as co-author of the song "Ritmo" by the Black Eyed Peas and after the success of the song "Clap your hands" by the French DJ Kungs which sees Ivana Spagna as author.

"Crazy for the disco dance" is a song that deliberately recalls the atmosphere and sounds of the 80s and choosing Spagna as the featuring was a natural choice. The artistic production is by Theo Spagna. Executive producing by Angie C.
