St. David - Disco Jam

The St. David Jam trilogy is complete! Once again, the Italian producer plunges into the depths of his music mine, chisels out a few rough gems, and polishes them off until the glinting diamonds beneath are exposed. As advertised, this EP is disco through and through. “Sexy Funk '98” is a slinky shuffler that gets the engine running and “I Got the Music” is a schmaltzy twirler that settles the party squarely under the mirror ball. The reverse is both more feisty and laid back. It starts with “Where U Move,” a lighter number with a hint of tropical rhythms and beachy sunniness. With “The Connection,” the 12-inch comes to a joyous conclusion; the sampled crowd cheers and jeers sound like a dance floor begging for an encore at the end of a long night.

Üdytü Ützeltürk & His Male Harem - Kairo / Kozak2000

A holy grail of European electronic dance music, and a classic at the Italian disco scene and Hamburg's Front club alike (you might have heard it on their recent Mastermix), is finally available again. Produced in 1984 by two mysterious friends during a hazy studio session in the small town of Aschaffenburg, Germany, it is best described by Discogs member goulashdj as 'a funny version of some Imam praying on top of an electronic Groove', .'Kairo' is all you want from an oddball record: fun and funky, weird and wonderful. Featuring original vocals by one of the two friends, it seems to be offensive to religious fanatics and devout Muslims (you better watch, where you play out the original). Therefore, a philosophical advisory or religious warning: 'No religion, god or believer was harmed during the creation of this record. We believe in the right to believe or disbelief in anything and everything that isn't inhuman.' For safety reasons, it includes a persecution-proof instrumental version by Boris Dlugosch as well as the original B-side and completely atheistic 'Kosak 2000'. And to close with Mark Twain: Man was made at the end of the week's work, when God was tired.

Her touring schedule regularly sees her playing her inimitable DJ style in hotspot cities like Paris, London, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Stockholm, Seoul, Osaka, and of course her beloved hometown Berlin where she was born and raised on the ever flowing current of electronic music coming from the city. Time for another new face on Quintessentials: Goshawk! Been around with differnt projects for ages, this East Midlands lad has always been one of the finest exponents of eccentric deep house. Releasing tons of quality music on labels like Hudd Traxx, Boogie Café, DiY Discs or his co-owned Pressed for Time and Atjazz forthcoming, we simply couldn’t resist signing Goshawk. The „stricly bungalow ep“ offers classic house music and 110 slowdown tunes and is full of fun and vibes, rough yet smooth! „Never let me go“ is an uplifting, sexy vocal track, „why I sing“ is one of two slowdown tunes with a nice dosage of funk, „all I have to give“ is a rather dark club banger and „time is just a loop“ is a minimalistic slowish chugger. Yes, strictly bungalow!

Noel WILLIAMS - Music Street

The final release of music from Noel Williams' solo recordings reaches an apex, with Music Street. Electro as he would do it, with hooks and touches of an ear for pop, with added bass and swing, giving it that boogie.

Written with his wife, the late Betty Wright, appearing in 1983 on his Tashamba label - a spin off from Konduko - and some three years before her own, "pop" version was released.

Music Street pulses, a story of Downtown in song, with snap hats and programmed bass highlighting the shift from the Ex-tras "band" to a studio focus. Vocal and instrumental are a DX soundclash, as vocoder hits the Boogaloo beat.

The final Discomix moves close to the source, welcoming Philadelphia's Universal Cave collective of Brian Cassidy, Shawn Ryan and Ryan Todd to step up State side. The collective, party and label have been releasing cassettes, CDRs and 7" edits since 2012, featuring the in-house's crew, as well as the likes of The Beat Broker, Jaz and DJ Duckcomb.

Their remix extends, loops, flips and dubs with respect and eyes on the floor. Teasing the intro, before vocal is loops and whirled, reverb and echo to fall through. That's where I want to be.

Nearly two years on from their last Casino Edits outing and marking six years of the label itself, Casino Times return for Casino Edits #5.

The A is a beefed-up take on a punchy European disco staple.
An infectious groove is coupled with fluttering arpeggios and a rigorous bassline that builds tension throughout to deliver some peak-time power.

Meanwhile on the flip, B1 brings synthesised and organic voices together with eerie melodies and a low slung beat, creating a rock-infused haze.
B2 finishes the release off on a house tip, with a relentless percussive loop that bends between mind-melting FX and an uncompromising square wave bass..

Re issue of Timmy Thomas's long sought after "Afrcaino" 12" excavated from the deepest realms of the TK Disco vaults.

When it comes to this Deep Disco cut, Africano is one of those tracks that became a dancefloor favorite of Danielle Baldelli who during the 80s played Disco, African records, American R&B, and reggae to create what has been since become known as the Afro-Cosmic scene at the height of Club culture in the discotheques of Northern Italy.

Remastered, represented and brought back into focus for 2017's DJ bags and dance-floors!

As usual, these TK represses are always done in the proper manner. 100% legit re-edits, from the archive, remastered and released in conjunction with Henry Stone Music / TK Disco - Miami FL.

EMS Synthi 100 (Soulwax) - DEEWEE Sessions Vol. 01

DEEWEE Sessions Vol. 01

12inchDEEWEE034 / VF301
DEEWEE
02.07.2020

David & Stephen Dewaele (aka Soulwax/2manydjs) have always been fascinated by collecting instruments and recording gear. Their passion hasn’t been born by completism: simply every new item inspires a world of possibilities. The one item that always eluded them was the EMS Synthi 100—a huge and rare analogue synthesizer, of which there were only 31 ever produced, that can create a near infinite array of sounds.

The album sounds simultaneously futuristic and retro as it highlights the versatility, uniqueness and warmth of the Synthi 100. Remarkably, a synthesizer that was first launched in 1971 continues to excel in 2020, aided only by patient restoration and fresh creative input. Each side of the vinyl features a long piece of music, each of which is divided into three movements. While they can be heard separately, David & Stephen urge people to listen to the entire experience from start to finish.

‘DEEWEE Sessions Vol.01’ is a highly collectible package featuring the album on heavyweight 180g vinyl along with a fully-illustrated 48-page book which explores the background behind the album and history of the Synthi 100. The book compiles a foreword from David & Stephen Dewaele; an introduction from 3030, the specific Synthi 100 unit that was used for the album; a history of its creation and an exploration of its sounds; and finally an interview with Ivan Schepers, the IPEM technician who has been 3030’s long-term custodian.

Fittingly, this tribute to such an elegant machine is presented in a beautiful style, art directed by Ill-Studio. The vinyl is held in a perforated ‘patch bay’ cover with a fully artworked inner sleeve, while both the disc and book are housed in a clear PVC bag.

‘EMS Synthi 100 - DEEWEE Sessions Vol.01’ will be released on May 29th with catalogue numbers DEEWEE034 / VF301. A digital version will also be available via download and streaming services and now available to pre-order from HERE.

This album was made with the kind assistance of and in collaboration with IPEM, Ghent.
Written, Recorded, Produced and Mixed at DEEWEE by David & Stephen Dewaele.

First Choice / Candido - Let No Man Put Asunder / Jingo (Moplen Remixes)

Contemporary Disco remix guru Moplen steps up to the Salsoul archive and turns in 2 absolutely stellar reworks of some solid evergreens. Always remixing and reworking with the utmost respect and understanding Moplen takes these classics into a new direction, working from the stems and retaining the funk, soul and grooves of the OG's. The disco mix market is a busy one these days with lots of people taking a shot at the classics in their bedrooms, but not these, these are legit, heavyweight mixes created by someone who knows! Candido's 'Jingo' sounds completely fresh, beginning with a totally unheard first few bars, rearranged piano motifs and dubby sounds bristle up against the percussion, all with an even heavier focus on the Cuban, Latin roots of Candido Camero's sound, amazing! You've heard this one before, but not like this. On the flip is First Choice's all-out anthem 'Let No Man Put Asunder' - again a truly original reimagining of a stone-cold classic, using the percussions and infamous vocal vamps to devastating effect, absolutely essential versions here. Moplen has truly done the business. This limited reissue has been made in conjunction with Above Board distribution and Salsoul Records, 100% sanctioned and lovingly re-presented for your dancing pleasure. This one is HOT. Stroeer Bros - Kunstdisco Seoul: Night Falls Feat. Howard Fine & Nadeen Holloway

The Black Pearl is very proud to present a real 80´s futuristic proto club banger from the STRÖER Brothers, with lots of clubby remixes by buddies & friends. The original track "Night Falls" was only released on a very limited hand-spread promo 12inch, which was especially pressed for the Kunstdisko art-project for the 24th Olympic games in 1988 in Seoul / South-Korea. Together with the Goethe Institut they created the "Kunstdisco" project for germany, which was located at the Yoido Ankara Square and took part for the german Seoul Olympic Art Festival. The Ströer Brothers, who were responsible for the video & music sector, invided and encouraged 25 young german composers and producers (among of them was the young DJ West Bam) to produce new music for the Kunstdisco between Rap and new electronic club music from the end of the 80´s. The Ströer Brothers, together with Howard Fine & Nadeen Holloway, were presented  through many DJ´s who played their music that they espacially created for this event. Next to the in-house project Mudegg, the single audio tracks of "Night Falls" were givin to musical buddies like First Touch, Enzo Elia, DJ Rocca, Siggatunes and Manelet to remix them and Black Pearl is more than proud to present a great variety of remixes, styles and visons on the original track.

Dam Swindle - High Life, The Remixes

After presenting Detroit Swindle’s sophomore album High Life in 2018, we felt it was the right time to serve you up a tasty selection of remixes from all over the world and all over the sound palette. We’ve got some dub and boogie from Australia and the Netherlands, classic deephouse from Detroit, dark and dreamy deephouse from the UK and some high energy house from Germany. This set of remixes comes from 5 artists we hold in high regard and have made a serious impact on their part of the scene; some recently and some already a long time ago.

We invited Dutch techno -plot twist alert!- legend Steve Rachmad to come up with a re-interpretation of ‘Yes, no, maybe (feat. Tom Misch)’. His Sterac Electronics remix actually has nothing to do with techno but is an uplifting modern boogie version of the already funky original. Glimmering electronics, some added harmonics and a tight 80’s groove is what this version is all about.

The A2 is reserved for Cinthie, who took the high energy afro funk track ‘Call of the wild (feat. Jungle by Night)’ and turned it into a full on house frenzy with solo’s all around and a groove that just keeps on going and going.

The A side is completed with a remix by Jura Soundsystem, who has impressed many of us with his balaeric influenced synth-boogie, and dub on his own label ‘Isle of Jura’. Here, he chose to remix ‘High life (feat. Lorenz Rhode)’ and has done an excellent job in re-imagining the track into a tamed down, dreamy dub.

On the flip, there’s Matt Karmil’s take on one of the album’s beatless tracks ‘Ketama gold’. He goes in deep with some dusty drums and an arrangement that keeps on building and building, keeping the chord sequence from the track’s outro as a main loop and adding subtle FX, toms and acid hits and a final delivery where electronic cowbells up the energy level by a notch or two.

We finish off the compilation with a moody deephouse re-interpretation of ‘Ex machina’ by Detroit legend Gari Romalis. The twisted machine funk of the original is craftfully replaced by a dusty house loop, dreamy pads and smart usage of the original’s drum effects to build momentum.

This remix package brings a lovely new chapter into the story of ‘High Life’ and we hope you’ll enjoy these reworks as much as we do.
Yours Sincerely,

Maarten & Lars.

Various - Efunk Detroit Vol.1

For our second foray into the House Of EFUNK we tap into the source, The Motor City, for a 5 track compilation of Detroit’s unsung heroes and up-and-comers. In true EFUNK fashion the music moves from soulful to funky, groovy to pumping.

On the A Side longtime P-Funk collaborator PiranhaHead (Mahogani, Moods & Grooves) brings in Abby B on vocals for the soulful, deep4life workout “Ebb & Flow”. Next up, two Detroit transplants living in LA, Visionquest’s Lee Curtiss and Steingold give us “Feed The Funk” a bassline driving, dancefloor bomb with a classic sample. Then the city's most prolific producer of the moment Javontte (NDATL, Sisturm) turns out a bubbling remix of Soul Clap’s Lonely C 2018 standout single Hold Up.

The B Side kicks off with edit master Pontchartrain (Whiskey Disco, Soul Clap Records) continues his move into strong originals with “Changes They Come”, a funked up, synthed out groove featuring Ian Fink on Keys. Fink rounds everything out with a funky, jazz influenced Detroit groove that shows off the keyboard skills that have him playing with everyone from Scott Grooves to Shigeto to Andrés.

Demuir - An artist thinketh EP

The next release on Heist is the result of some serious Instagram A&R by yours truly. Canada's number one jackin' house ambassador Demuir drops an EP loaded with that true house energy and it comes topped off with a swirling and twirling trip of a remix by Lady Blacktronika.

It's funny how good music sometimes falls in your lap. It was a random Instagram scrolling session with my mind switched off, when our insta-feed suddenly propelled into a sweet groove. I awoke from the matrix and realized I was looking at Demuir in his studio, who had recorded a little clip of a track he was working on. I immediately texted him and forced him to tell us what that was. His answer? A new unreleased tune by him. A coffee and 2 emails later, we received a mail with that track and a list of others to choose from. This ep is the result of that short online interaction and a mutual love for high energy house music. This record showcases Demuir's knack for rolling grooves and also shows a deeper, more electronic side of his that might surprise you.

The track we're talking about above is 'Werq. Feel. Gruv. Vogue.' A rough sounding, bumping house track that would have worked just as well in any club in the 90's as it will in today's world of clubbing. The 'Vogue' sample has that 'tongue in cheek'-vibe we like so much and the groove is just irresistible. Top that off with some lovely Rhodes loops, a little disco chop here and there and you've got yourself a very original party starter.

We always try to put out diverse EP's on Heist, and with 'the 3nity returneth', Demuir delivers a Detroit-tech inspired steam train of a track. The track represents the confidence an artist needs to make it in the music scene. He lays down the groove with a rough bass, rolling hats and a lovely string sample and adds glimmering electronics for a touch of spirituality.

The B-side has two versions of 'Philippine Sunrise'. The original is a rolling house track with airy synth hits, a Moog-ish rising lead and a freakishly good bass line. The remix comes courtesy of LA native, Berlin based Lady Blacktronika, who turns the trip factor up a notch or two. She chooses to go for a heads down direction with a series of dreamy loops to set the mood, all alongside an endless bassline and a steady house groove.

We hope you'll enjoy the electronic funk in this EP as much as we do.

Yours Sincerely,
Lars & Maarten

Maria Rita - Brasileira

Repress

An original copy of the Brasileira LP by Brazilian singer Maria Rita Stumpf has been on top of collectors' and music lovers' wishlist for the past couple of years, since "Cântico Brasileiro No 3 (Kamaiurá)" broke out and cast a spell worldwide - from Japan to Brazil, from Norway to South Africa, everybody was flabbergasted after they first heard the song, and each and every time they heard it again. For the lucky ones that could listen to her whole album - and get to know other gems such as "Lamento Africano/Rictus" and "A Cidade"- it is clear that it is an ouvre that more people should have access to, not only an elite of listeners and connaisseurs.
The good news are that the LP will be available again in its entirety in a new, glossy, loud and clear pressing released through Selva Discos, a new label run by Augusto Olivani and Millos Kaiser (the DJ/production duo known as Selvagem) in partnership with JD Twitch's Optimo Music. It's a legit reissue overviewed by Maria Rita Stumpf herself, the music being remastered from the remaining DAT tape of the original release and artwork faithfully updated by Brazilian design studio Colletivo, featuring liner notes by the singer/songwriter.
Here's an extract from Augusto Olivani's and Millos Kaiser's (the duo behind the DJ/production unity Selvagem and also Selva Discos) sleeve notes about the Brasileira LP reissue and the label's launch -
'We were aware of the originality and rarity of this album since we put our hands on a copy of the Brasileira LP a few years ago, but it took time to learn that Maria Rita from 'Kamaiurá', the track that carried us away as soon as we first heard it, was the same Maria Rita with whom one of us knew since childhood. To reissue 'Brasileira' became a life mission. Also, it turned to be the seed that allowed Selva Discos to bloom.'
And another extract, taken from Maria Rita's recollection on the serendipity that triggered the this release -
'Many years passed until I got a call from a close friend saying that his son, whom I had known since childhood, was my fan. I found it funny... I was slowly returning to music after years of directing Antares, a company I created and that brought thousands of artists to Brazil. He was a DJ who played my songs at the Selvagem parties and as he said, did not know that I was me, the same Maria Rita who worked with his father. This was a plot twist, a movie thing.'
Maria Rita Stumpf is owner of Brazilian production company Antares Produções, responsible for bringing international artists to Brazil for the past 30 years, such as Philip Glass and Mikhail Baryshnikov. After distancing herself from the music business since the Brasileira original release, almost 30 years ago, she's now back in the game.
Augusto Olivani and Millos Kaiser have been working under the alias Selvagem for the past 5 years, standing by their monthly residencies in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, releasing edits and reworks for labels like Beats in Space, Disco Deviance and Disco Halal. Now they're also behind the label Selva Discos, whose mission is to unearth and update exquisite, overlooked Brazilian music - not without the aid of JD Twitch from Optimo Music.
The follow-up to this first release is a reworks 12" featuring a remake of "Cântico Brasileiro No 3 (Kamaiurá)" produced by Selvagem & Carrot Green (based on a new studio session with one of the original session musicians, Paulo Sergio dos Santos from Uakti) backed by a Joakim remix of "Lamento Africano/Rictus", to be released shortly after the Brasileira reissue.

Phenomenal Handclap Band - Jail

New York's indie disco freaks Phenomenal Handclap Band is back with a second single on Toy Tonics: Jail. With remixes by Detroit's Waajeed and Marcel Vogel of Lumberjacks in Hell. Including a club edit by Toy Tonics head honcho Kapote. The band was responsible for one of Toy Tonics' biggest tracks in 2018: Judge Not: The Ray Mang version became a hit on open minded dancefloors around the globe: with support from DJ's like DJ Harvey, Cassius and Gilles Peterson (who put it int his - best track of the year' list) but also more house DJ's like Berlin's Keine Musik Crew, Soundstream or Superpitcher. The band's members are kind of heroes to many connoisseurs of the funk/ disco scene. The band leader Daniel Collas was playing keys in Amy Winehouse legendary backing band. Other members are connected to Mark Ronson's crew or San Francisco's Stones Throw universe.. just to give u the bigger picture. With The Phenomenal Handclap Band they blend the unique vibe of 1970ies Power-Soul in the traditon of Charles Stepney and Rotary Connection with today's new disco vibe. Parcels, Toro Y Moi, Roosevelt are not that far. Important fact: All played live, no samples. Mixed by the champs at DFA. The band is part of Toy Tonics's masterplan to expand their dancevibes into more live played scenarios.. stepping out of the strict DJ context. Fun fact Paul McCartney wrote the band a letter saying how much he loved their music when he first heard the band on BBC Radio 1.
