Medicine used to be, we expected, good for us. Albeit with added sugar. Now medicine is a huge problem in itself, with vast companies caught mis-selling dangerous drugs. It’s one of the biggest scandals ever. How on earth did we get here? Who did this?

Emanating from the mists of NYC's over-populated airwaves since 1999, Tim Sweeney's Beats In Space show has long been a beacon of quality, originality and cutting edge music on a weekly basis for electronic music fans world-wide. The standard and variety of the regular guests has always been extremely high and international DJ's and artists such as DJ Harvey, Four Tet, Ben UFO, Move D, Jamie XX, Prosumer, James Murphy, Carl Craig, Gerd Janson, Todd Terje and many more have all graced the BIS turntables at one time or another in the last decade and a half.

It is this open minded approach to music and quality control that marks BIS out from the crowd as a radio show and as a record label. On this special compilation celebrating BIS 15th anniversary we are treated to two discs of stellar picks from Tim's record bag, the first disc is a mix recorded in the WNYU studio a host of exclusive tracks and edits from Azari & III, Edwin Starr, Dukes Of Chutney & Secret Circuit. The second disc is a collection of BIS classics and influences that have steered the direction that the show has taken since it's inception, including some killer under the radar gems and secret weapons from the likes of John Talabot, Matias Aguayo, Plaid and Tensnake. Both mixes help to tell the story of one of the most enduring, vital radio shows out there - Long live Beats In Space!

With an album on Kerri Chandler's Kaoz Theory plus EPs on his Madhouse and Madtech imprints you could say Benson Herbert and Leo Picking - aka Voyeur - made a triple axel that a lot of producers wouldn't mind themselves.

Their debut release on Omena, Awakening, oozes percussion finesse, deep pads, chord stabs, vocal chants and playful melodies.

Max Essa completes a trio of terrific releases on Hell Yeah with The Great Adventure EP. It's packed with more grown up dance floor dynamite and later in the year will be collected together with the first two parts to make for a full album.

By now you will know that Essa is part of the UK's Balearic mafia. He's served up big tunes on Is It Balearic?, Aficionado, Music For Dreams, and his music always acts as a sonic raft that floats you out to sea and leaves you bobbing up and down in a state of pure bliss.

Opener 'Tombolo' starts as acoustic music and the sound of a muffled crowd but soon awakens into an uptempo affair littered with toms, guitar licks and claps that are driven by bumping drums. There are elements of old school, Italo and classic house but somehow it feels completely new and fresh as it takes you ever higher.

'The Great Adventure' is masterfully sun kissed disco with crisp 80s drums, love struck chords and a yacht rock feel that is pure joy, something like topless dancing with sand between your toes and umbrellas in your cocktails.

Closer 'Fool in the Pool' sinks into gentle tabla drums and unhurried chords. It's horizontal and thoughtful - the sound of a lazy afternoon somewhere on the Mediterranean coast, gazing at glistening seas through the romantic lens flare in your sunglasses.

This EP is already great feedback from the DJ dons who have been giving it early plays, so act now to snap up your first summer sounds of 2020.

NuNorthern Soul proudly presents Dimun, an overlooked neo-classical / ambient fusion track by Faroe Islands-based producer Kristan Blak’s Yggdrasil project. Label boss ‘Phat’ Phil Cooper was playing G! festival on the Faroe Islands in 2019 and as part of the experience the delegates, artists and DJs where invited to see and experience some of the cultural spots and institutions of the Faroe Islands. One of those was Tutl records owned by Kristian Blak. Tutl records is a wonderful record store and label representing the wealth of amazing Faroese recording talent and has been around for years.

Kristian invited a few people to his house and he played the piano line of Dimun, Phil recorded it on his phone and could not stop watching it… He eventually contacted Kristian to ask about the music which led to it being licensed for this release.

Mike Salta steps up with studio partner Marty ‘Mortale’ to create an epic 12 minute version with a nod to the heritage and sounds of Cafe Del Mar circa 1998 and with added new flavours of Ibiza al la Mark Barrott / International Feel. The flip sees UK producer & DJ, Chris Coco take the helm with his dreamy New Age version chilled to the perfect temperature for lost La Torre sunset moments. Finally we have the original version and to quote David from One Million Sunsets "This is ace, all three versions, you could put them together to make one long track. New Age finally making a proper comeback."

The UK's finest vinyl connoisseur and edit maestro Mr Al Kent is returning to GAMM with a gorgeous two-part vinyl experience.

On part one we find Al in jazzy mode but still nodding towards disco (as so often).
On 'The Light Of You' we get a grand instrumental cover version of Stevie's "Another Star" which is destined to peak at your local disco.
On 'Sing A Song' Al digs even deeper and re-edits a fierce Latin-fusion jam that will get all the jazz dancers out there in check...proper dance music!

The eternally prolific duo PSYCHEMAGIK are back once again (already?!) with yet another mind blowing edits package.

This latest offering from the Cosmic Forest is their reworking of Chillys, Yardbirds classic, For Your Love think epic 10 minute cosmic dancefloor monster complete with guitars, violins and soaring vocals.

And then there’s more… the flip “Aldeia De Ogum”, a reworking of the Joyce original, has Ibiza sunset written all over it, transporting you immediately to the beach within the first few bars.

Latin percussion blends with beautiful guitars, flutes and horns to create a truly breathtaking sonic vista .

Claptrap label boss returns with a four-track release ‘Big Pharma’.
Following on from this years releases by Longhair and Dr Valentines Claptrap are back with Vanity Project’s new release ‘Big Pharma’. Vanity Project has been managing Claptrap with his partner in crime Dr Valentines since their first 12" release in 2017 and dropped his first full release, a self titled EP in 2018. Since then he’s been DJing & performing live shows around the UK and has most recently dropped the City Elastic EP on London’s Midnight People.
Big Pharma features four spaced out original house cuts ready for the dance floor. A1, 'Letters and Numbers’ opens the EP with a driving groove, tight drums and rubbery synths. A2 the title track ‘Big Pharma’ brings a hint of acid alongside a deeper thumping house groove. B1 Grow Slow, kicks off the second side with a mellow down tempo sizzler, prime for those outdoor coastal parties. The final track Index brings the EP to a close with swirling euphoric synth lines and a dance floor moving stomp.

Optimo Music Digital Danceforce is the digital label of Optimo Music, an internationalist musical outlet designed to get dancefloor focussed music out there without the long delays that vinyl manufacturing often entails. So far this has been a very satisfying project and the first half dozen or so releases (with many more in the pipeline) have been very well received.

There will be a series of best of OMDD 12's taking a track from each release and compiling it on a various artists 4 track 12', cut loud for maximum club impact. Here is volume 1 featuring tried and tested club hits from Belgium's Strapontin, The Netherland's Perdu, Morocco born Bergsonist and Italy's Tamburi Neri.

Looping and filtering, mentioned all too often as an uncool and lazy way of making music, probably a result of the huge amount of bad releases that the techniques are associated with. This release in your hands is the first of a series paying tribute to the crate diggers whose samples and loops in my opinion, are milestones for house music and club culture. Loops that I never got tired of listening too, even for more than two decades in some cases. With the original compositions often sought after and repressed, here we're paying respect to original 'sampling artist" rather than the 'sampled artist', outrageous eh
In this episode: 
Delgado's masterpiece was probably the first successful case of a simple loop going nonstop through an entire arrangment, it was a clear inspiration for many to come. Longo's sample, is the closest example to a perfect loop that I can think of. There are very few grooves with such a strong combination of funk, power and shuffle. Well done Longo and well done Delgado!"

Ditongo

Jesse is one most interesting electronic acts of the Northern countries. Stiletti-Ana and Kalifornia-Keke make up the core of the band that plays with new genres and often explores new musical areas. In the bands residence, the studio in Helsinki with a collection of retro futuristic synthesizers that would make even William Onyeabor envy, the members are toying with new influences and creates deep pulsating and atmospheric songs. Höga Nord Rekords now release two of them as a 7”.

This single has more in common with Stiletti-Anas solo record from 2019 than of earlier releases by Jesse and is more oriented towards and ambient- and leftfield sound than “Fluids” from 2018. The songs bubble and flows beneath a tense surface. The music is suggestive and soft, still with a club nerve in it.

Jesse often chooses new musical paths and this release is the start of such a new direction.

Stalwart of the scene, Craig Bratley, serves up big Italo flavours all over the '99.9% EP', ably backed with a remix from Mr. Andrew Weatherall. With previous releases on Neil Diablo's To Rack & Ruin, Tsuba, Is It Balearic and Robsoul Recordings, Bratley's Futureboogie debut opens with the searing synths and chugging arped bass of '99.9%'. The varied and changing music of Noel Williams and his Konduko label are explored further with a second series of EPs, this time expanding out of the late 70s / early 80s disco sound to encompass funk and early electro, highlighting this ground breaking artist's influence from reggae roots to the following Miami Bass sound.

Here Williams steps out of his King Sporty moniker for a series of forward thinking and now highly sought after releases. With Konduko as his vehicle, he again teamed up Bobby Caldwell. Recorded at North Miami's Ovadradial Studios, the lowrider funk is underpinned by Caldwell's arrangement, KC & The Sunshine Band's Robert Johnson (drums) and Eugene Timmons' (sax) wonderful solo.

This is augmented by Moton Inc's Diesel & Jarvis subtle but on point Discomix for extended club play. The incessant looping lifts the song and places it firmly in the long line of edit history, from Gibbons to Terje. Synonymous with the "discoid" sound of 90s London and beyond, the cut and paste skills of Diesel (Ballistic Brothers / Yellow Sox) and Jarvis (Pamela / Love Vinyl) have continued at a higher standard since. Their delicate arrangement and deceptive dubbing act the perfect foil to this special Miami funk machine.

Cosmic dance and spatial atmospherics are at the very centre of Zakmina’s productions, as the Lithuanian producer readies an appetizing EP for Dave Harvey’s Futureboogie, backed with a remix from the always on-point Gnork.

With releases already wetting our ears on Critical Monday, XXX and Roam Recordings, Zakmina spreads his wings across three new cuts. ‘Church Of Madness’ pumps with oodles of new beat drums and soaring synths, anchored by a fat arpeggiated bassline, whilst ‘Déjà vu’ is a first class chugger, its drums as big as 80’s shoulder pads, with glacial keys and breezy vocals comprising the seductive sensations on offer here.

The Balearic synth-pop vibes of ‘Running Amore’ complete the trio of originals from Zakmina, whilst Gnork lays down the lino and tweaks ‘Church Of Madness’ into a solid 808 drum driven ‘Ezoteric Breakdance’ Remix. The Hungarian producer, responsible for some killer releases on Lone’s Magicwire label, Unknown To The Unknown, as well as his own Earth Plates imprint, delivers a futuristic b-boy re-working that’s heady and exhilarating right off the bat.

June Records presents the debut release of Lithuanian artist Caroil who has been active in the local scene with his involvement with DOS Club and STRCAMP. Recorded between 2015 and 2018 in Vilnius, Lithuania using hardware digital and analog synthesizers. Sound sources include: Boss DR-660, Formanta Polivoks, Kawai SX-210, Kawai K1, KORG MS-20, KORG KR-55B, Roland SH-101, Roland JX3P, SIEL Cruise, YAMAHA TG-33.

Dutch disco dons Kraak&Smaak make their debut on Razor-N-Tape with a pair of boogie originals pressed to wax for the first time ever, featuring two remix gems from Ben Sun and Tiger & Woods! The soulful vibes run deep on Way Back Home, with Ben Sun and T&W taking us to Frankie and Shepp town, respectively, on their mixes. And with its synthy uptempo disco stomp, Seb's Party rounds out this wonderfully varied 4-tracker perfectly.

The Eastern European Cut Outs, the spin off series of The Very Polish Cut Outs, that launched last year moves smoothly into the second round.

45 year anniversary of William DeVaughn's smooth soul classic remastered and reissued for 2018.

“Diamond in the back / Sunroof top / Digging the scene with the gangster lean" - Does it get any smoother than that? Stick this record on and get lost in that effortless bassline, sensual guitar licks, coupled with DeVaughn's silky vocals and you'll be right there kicking back in the Cadillac. Oft sampled by the likes of NWA and De La Soul and covered multiple times, most notably on Massive Attack's debut album.

On the B side you're treated to 'Blood Is Thicker Than Water', DeVaughn's first single giving a taste of the masterfully stylish soul he was to carry throughout his career.

'LoveHrtz' return this Valentines Day with another two track, vinyl only single, and the vibes are set to maximum on this one. The previous release in the LoveHrtz series sold clean out, and is swapping hands on Discogs for silly amounts (not our doing!), so diggers are advised to get on this one without delay.

LoveHrtz chop out another brace of feel good, disco bangers, with ‘Music Makes Me High’ and ‘Sweet Style’ already picking up BBC Radio 1 airplay from Annie Mac and Danny Howard, and a handful of DJs such as Jamie Jones, Butch, Martinez Brothers and Seth Troxler giving these cuts some serious road testing in the clubs.

File Under Disco revisit the 2013 Disco classic-in-the-making Make It Hot, one of the biggest tunes released on their 100% original Disco imprint.

The original track showcased the musical talents of NYC maestro JKriv and the wonderful vocal skills of Adeline Michele.
These days Jason is one of the faces behind the Razor-N-Tape label, co-songwriter and bassist with live NYC disco act Escort and the producer behind various big releases on Z Records and Glitterbox.
He really is a contemporary Disco Machine!

On this set of new remixes this fantastic production talent comes head to head with longstanding remixer extraordinaire and studio master Ray Mang.
The man called Mang opts to launch the original into the outer dub-sphere in his trippy and extended High Pressure Dub. This one puts out the disco fires with gasoline!

Meanwhile on the flip, JKriv himself launches a new and raw electronic interpretation that completely reignites the original vocal performance by Adeline into an ecstatic dance floor work out.

Last, but not least, old friends and disco compatriots Pete Herbert and Dicky Trisco deliver an Aperol-infused Balearic House rework of the original, which is the perfect soundtrack for those beach sunsets and summer nights that just refuse to end quietly.

My Rules records is back with their first release of 2019 - the highly sought after cosmic disco bomb Movin' by Belgian group Candy Darling & The Viscounts.

The fourth outing from this mysterious label continues their established themes: Crossover sounds from all over the world united by an open-minded approach to the dancefloor.

"Emotional Rescue begins the first in a series of reissues looking at the music of guitarist Carl Weingarten and his Multiphase Records label, starting at his highly sought after collaborate album with Walter Whitney, Dreaming In Colors. With an early interest in photography and Super 8 film leading to a degree in cinema production, Weingarten's other, self-taught, love was the slide guitar. Taking its blues roots and merging them with his visual arts background created a unique "painting in sound" style of playing. While looking to break into the film industry he began writing and recording his own film scores and other music for modern dance companies. From this, he founded Multiphase Records in St Louis in 1980. By the time of Dreaming In Colors, the label had released a series of cassettes and vinyl albums offering abstract, experimental, jazz-fusion, new wave and increasingly, new age compositions. Throughout this period the work of engineer, keyboardist and programmer, Walter Whitney was often present and by the 1985 release of Dreaming In Colors the duo had collaborated for a number of years and released several projects together, most notably as members of the Delay Tactics band. Recorded during off days from the Delay Tactics sessions, the album came together at Whitney's Subterranean Sound studio with a focus away from the bands guitar driven instrumentals to explore a multilayered approach to synthesis, blending textures with Whitney's original samples and sound design, while Weingarten's guitar moved from shining solo moments to complimenting the overall oeuvre, all with heavy washes of delay. This ecumenical approach led to the creation of this compelling album. A masterful conceptual whole that is linked by rich melodies and a concise playing style, heavy on substance while never forgoing the uplifting vibrations. "
