In the early 80s Japan was in a flourishing bubble, becoming the world’s second-largest economy, threatening to overtake the West with its cutting-edge innovation. Middle class Japanese citizens indulged in luxury clothes, imported wine, and international travel, enjoying unorthodox freedom. City pop emerged as the soundtrack to this cosmopolitan lifestyle: an ode to bright colours, sunny beaches and naive romances, with a clear West influence. Such influence also brought together the first health and fitness wave to Japan: for the first time, taking care of oneself was trendy, and Aerobic, the word in everybody’s mouth.

Hyped by the momentum, both the Aerobic Fitness Association (A.F.A. U.S.A, still running) and the Nippon Aerobic Association put together a program to help audiences follow Aerobic classes on channel TBS. Not surprisingly they hired one of the most inspired young talents of the Era, the guitarist Yuji Toriyama (now well known as one of the fathers of Japanese fusion), to perform, together with Ken Morimura (keyboardist for the salsa band Orquesta Del Sol) a series of tracks that could help the viewers keep their body moving.

As surprisingly as it seems, that fusion of killer boogie guitars and synths with kitsch aesthetics was made for exercising. Aerobics is a soundtrack made up of boogie beats that span the genres of funk, technopop and even City Pop with the purpose of getting folks off their heinies and moving around rhythmically. As this album plays fully instrumental, Toriyama’s rhythms and glossy arrangements melt together perfectly with uplifting synths and programmed drums to give birth to a distinguible cheerful atmosphere. Soul Clap explains…….. "WTF (World Transformation Force) is our reaction to what’s happening to this planet called Earth, and to us, the human beings on it. Soul Clap are astute in looking to the past in order to build the future, a constant ethos driven by their many influences and the respect and genuine acknowledgement to the roots of dance music. They connect with artists from the source and this is further displayed on WTF with collaborators like Nona Hendryx (one third of Labelle and who toured with Talking Heads), who delivers a powerful spoken word on album interlude ‘What If There Was No America?’

The album also features Tra’zae Clinton, who is the grandson of George Clinton; Harry Dennis, Chicago house music producer and lyricist who was part of the original generation of house music in the late 1970s and early 1980s; Rich Medina, a key figure of the East Coast scene, creator of Lil’ Ricky’s Rib Shack and resident for Q-Tip’s ‘Open’ Fridays events; and Sha-Lor vocalist Lori Lava who burst onto NYC Club scene with classic ‘I’m In Love’ produced by Newcleus/Dream 2 Science mastermind Cozmo D in the late 80s.

AXNER are Disco Freaks' Chris Davies (Acid Jazz Records) and singer Julia Axner. Their debut 'Got The Look' is a self-empowered celebration of getting your glow on and heading to the club for a boogie. An all original production, featuring drummer Ralph Rolle (Nile Rodgers & Chic), Joel Sarakula on Rhodes, Paul Housden on bass and a super-tight Philly brass section to finish things off. Keeping things analog, AXNER called in Al 'Million Dollar Disco' Kent to give the track the extended remix reel-to-reel treatment. Stripping back the 'Feel Good' vocals, letting that beautiful Rhodes breathe and stirring the track into a dance floor focused crescendo of brass complimented harmonies that legendary Walter Gibbons would be proud of. The instrumental is trimmed down for maximum impact. Perfect percussion ammo for any groove obsessed DJ. Pressed at 45pm for added disco goodness, AXNER's debut is dance floor dynamite that's ready to explode.

Box full of house music

For a duo whose youthful energy rejuvenated the world of house music at the start of the 2010s, it seems incredible that Disclosure are now into their second decade of musical life. The incredible vigour of those early records, the spark of invention and ever-onward musical thrust, remains with the Disclosure brothers, Howard and Guy Lawrence, to this day. The emphasis throughout DJ-Kicks is on motion. After a brief ambient introduction from Pépe's Life Signs, Disclosure keep the energy high, in a mix that showcases the wonderful malleability of a house beat in the right hands. From sub bass to disco samples, African funk to 303 tweak, all is welcome in Disclosure's house, with the mix allowing individual songs space to breath even as the pace remains harefooted.

The much loved and highly sought after Hot Toddy Remix of Never Gonna Reach Me is finally getting a long overdue vinyl repress from the original masters and artwork. It's no exaggeration to say that NGRM has become a bona fide disco classic since its first release that has stood the test of time. Crazy P band member Chris Todd took the original version from the band's Stop, Space, Return album and remixed it up for the dance floor adding disco drums, rhodes keys and arpeggiated synth sequences. On the flip side there is another sublime remix from Still Going, the New York duo best known for their output on DFA. All in all an absolutely essential addition to any record collection...

Wrapping up the Summer season for Selva Discos comes the fourth installment of the Brasingles series. This time, the label presents a slow burner from singer-songwriter Taciana Barros, taken from her only solo album "Janela dos Sonhos" (1995), produced by the mighty Mitar Subotic aka Suba.

Taciana is known for his work as singer of the band Gang 90 e as Absurdettes – one of the milestones for the Brazilian rock/new wave scene in the 80s – and her personal involvement with Suba in the early 90s led to the recording of "Janela dos Sonhos", originally released on CD and K7. The Serbian producer also contributed with a unique "extended remix" of "Tudo Faz Sentido" – and those who are slightly familiar with the Brazilian music industry knows how rare it is to have such kind of remix on an official release.

The original song is already catchy, seductive and quite polished as the best songs from that 1995 vintage are, but the Suba remix manages to take it to another level and then further, extending its mysterious atmosphere and intensifying the sexiness that lays underneath it all the way until it reaches the awesome breakdown – and then bringing the song back to a greater effect. It truly is an exquisite track that combines the excellence of Suba's production skills and Taciana's voice and songwriting talent that surely will hold the listener on repeat.

As most of the Brasingles releases, this is a loud 12" single with the original song on the A side and a rework on the B side, to please both the DJ and the home listener.

Emotional Rescue reaches ten releases and their second to be defined as a "cosmic classic" though that doesn't really do The Dream by The Ganges Orchestra full justice. Discovered and championed by a young Daniele Baldelli, The Dream mixed duggis, shenai, tabla, conga and guitar through Indian raga and European rhythm structures to create a unique musical vision. Long known to more open minded collectors and DJs, the whole EP has long been sought after and staple of many sunset and sunrise experiences. For this reissue, Emotional Rescue take it further with a longer version, previously unreleased track "The Calling" which is essentially an ambient version of "The Dream" and has been extended especially for this release by The Invisible Hands. In addition they also provide a short edit of the original releases 24 minute epic "Meditasian".

The North of England is known for its musical prowess. Middlesbrough born Rees taps into that musical history while diving deep into lost disco, obscure wave and even the Middle East for his debut for Bordello. Three Eyes is a melting pot. "Emotional Rescue presents the first ever reissue of Sugar Minott’s rare 12” of I Remember Mama. Recorded in Soho in mid-80s London, the Boogie meets Reggae song comes in vocal and instrumental mixes, as well as a wonderfully teasing long Discomix by NAD aka Dan Tyler (Idjut Boys).

Having grown up and become a star out of Kingston, JA, with over 50 albums and hundreds of singles for the likes of Studio One and Black Roots labels, the legendary vocalist was a pioneer of the Dancehall and then later Lovers Rock sounds.

Based in London for much of the 1980s, a chance meeting in the Wackies offices he met producer Steve Parr, who had recently opened the Sound Design Studio next door.

Hatching the idea to create a label to showcase their capabilities, Parr played all the instruments except the distinctive sax by friend Andy MacDonald, while Minott’s delivery is at his prime, storytelling in the Jamaica tradition of hardship and praise.

Released on 7” and 12”, they have striking differences. The “Sound Design” instrumental / version sees the studio team craft a disco meets reggae in a cod-style to wonderful, almost Balearic effect.

The collaboration with Dan Tyler continues, as he again works his desk dubbing magic. Extending and editing between the two mixes, teasing the instrumental before finally bringing the sax and vocals together for a ‘discodub’ finale. "

Label boss Jason Peters is back with a new single for his Roam Recordings imprint. Lost in Space features Jason’s vocals driving an early house meets italo feel with a splash of dub. The EP is backed by two top remixes from Prins Thomas and The Juan MacLean. Prince Thomas takes the vibe of the original into an epic Diskomiks with live guitars, strings, and tribal drums over a masterful arrangement. The Juan MacLean takes the mood in the opposite direction delivering a dark, stripped down, hypnotic banger.

In 1975, Tony Allen recorded his debut album, Jealousy, the first of three made with Africa 70 and produced by Fela Kuti. Jealousy is according to many still the highlight of his 4 solo-albums, featuring 2 afro-beat gems 'Jealousy' and 'Hustler'.
But by 1978 he was ready for a change of scene, and a year later he parted company with Kuti. It's not a big story,' says Allen today. I was tired, I'd just had enough.' His final studio collaboration with Kuti was on an album made with American vibraphonist Roy Ayers, Africa Centre Of The World (released in 1981). In 1979 he formed his own band, Tony Allen & the Afro Messengers, among many members of Africa 70 and recorded his first album away from Kuti, No Discrimination.
This was his final work during the 70's, after which he started to move beyond the border of Nigeria by collaborating with artists worldwide. Till this day he remains one of the greatest kit drummers Alive.

Founder of Comet Records, Eric Trosset started working with those great heroes of West African
music, Ebo Taylor & Pat Thomas, back in 2010. Taking on the role of manager/publisher, Comet
teamed up with Strut Records and musician/producer Ben Abarbabel Wolf f to revive Ebo Taylor‘s
international career with a string of album releases. In 2014, Eric collaborated with Pat Thomas &
The Kwashibu Area Band on a new album, gathering together the old ‘pals’ (Ebo Taylor, Pat
Thomas, Tony Allen) in producer Kwame Yeboah’s studio in Accra and inadvertently creating a new
hybrid: Afro-Funk Highlife.

It is with great pleasure that Comet launches this second EP of the Highlife series, a soulful afro
touch of new Parisian underground. On Side A comes “Peace On Earth” by Ebo Taylor, a
stunning track from the album Twer Nyame, originally released in 1978. “Peace On Earth” is
definitely a must have! Monsieur Scott, the Paris based afrobeat scientist comes back with a deep
and soulful afro-house remix.

On Side B is “We Are Coming Home” by Pat Thomas, a classic highlife anthem originally released
in 1980 on the LP Stage 2. 2 Paris Septembre is an electronic music group composed of two
Parisian brothers, raised with the music of Fela Kuti. Their production is a mix of electronic music,
afrobeat and hip-hop. “Remixing Pat Thomas was an honor. He’s a true living legend of Highlife
afrobeat music.” Until then get funked with their debut rework on Comet and expect a lot more from
the pair in the coming months.

'GUILI GUILI' is a double AA side 7" single, with an additional remix by Art Of Tones on the digital version.

French slang for "tickle", 'GUILI' is an epic disco-funk piece inspired by the likes of Azymuth, Herbie Hancock and Marcos Valle, but incorporated with Souleance's trademark sounds of fuzzy bass-heavy electronica, synths and samples, giving the track a fresh contemporary twist. Meanwhile, the (digital only) Art Of Tones mix ramps up the disco elements heavily, incorporating some vocals, strings and horn stabs to create some sure fire heat for the summertime. The flipside 'TORO' is a much more tweaked-out, synth-heavy bomb, influenced by artists such as Prince, Parliament and French electronic club music. All tracks mark the evolution of the duo into a full live band, whilst remaining true to their sonic mission of producing music crafted especially for the dancefloor.

The band have been performing live at various festivals and venues across Europe, with upcoming appearances scheduled at the Pura Vida Festival, Greece in August and Jazz à Vienne in July.

Hell Yeah welcomes the Italian musical collective Aura Safari for a debut EP on the label.

The band, who are at the forefront of a new Italian fusion sound that blends jazz-funk, electronic and world sounds, is made up of acclaimed house devotee Nicholas Iammatteo, plus Alessandro Deledda, Lorenzo Lavoratori, Daniele Melloni and Andrea Moretti. They contributed a standout track to the Buena Onda - Balearic Beats compilation last year as well as releasing a full length LP on UK label Church to critical acclaim.

Opener 'Dreams of Music' is a lush, new age groove with rich musicality, wind instruments and live drums all glowing warmly as you roll into sundown. 'Oasis' then sinks into a reflective mood, with lazy drums and sensuous late night chords sounding like Roy Ayers all loved up and super stoned. The noodling keys really melt your heart before the excellent 'Slow Divers' pairs more majestic bass riffs with wet claps and splashing cymbals as a wandering lead drifts up to the heavens. It has a dubby swagger to it that is superbly subtle.

Closing out the EP 'Libra', is a heartwarming, slow motion, jazz-funk fusion packed with detail and life affirming synth playing.

These are gloriously heartfelt tracks that showcase this collective's supreme musical ability as well as their unquestionable understanding of jazz, funk and soul, past, present and future.

Hailing out of the Rhythm Plate universe, Yse Saint Laur'ant is back with more of that fanciful house music he does so well. This latest drop on Vinyl Only leads in with 'Rivers', a beautiful warm-up track led by a powerful spoken word performance from an unknown source. 'Finality' is a smouldering, slow-build epic which finally releases in a burst of brass to get a big mass of bodies moving as the sunnier days hit and we head outdoors to dance. 'Your Man' is a dustier affair for the heads down crowd, 'Paradiso' slows things to a gentle murmur and 'Entrance To The Future' takes a sharp left turn into synthwave territory. If you like bags of personality in your house music, look no further.

A top value for money opportunity here, as Moiss Music deliver the latest in their sweet and sticky Jam series of various artist 12" line ups, bringing you no less than six bubbling, vivacious disco triumphs from six artists. Khemir's 'Disco Bandit' kicks off proceedings, a production that sounds like it was made by a band of around 45 musicians, a proper cavalcade of strings, brass, brazen disco thump and beautifully bold vocals. Wurzelholz's 'Prince' goes for a bit more economy but with a slinky funk bassline like that - not to mention the occasional exclamation from the purple overlord himself - it's equally devastating in dancefloor terms. Among the other highlights, 'Golden' by I Gemin has the feel of a lost Daft Punk flip tune and Cosmocomics' 'Glamorous Garcon', boasting 70s-style synth bubbles that are as cute as they are retro. Tasty as ever.

About 6 months ago, just before I set off on my 5 month tour of Europe I got a message from a good friend of mine asking me if I would edit a track that he loves.
I said of course, and asked him what track.
Turns out its a big favourite of mine also.
'Why Can't We Live Together' by Timmy Thomas is an amazing song with a strong message that is even more relevant today than it was back in 1972.
The message is clear, it's simple, it's beautiful.
I'm saddened by recent events around the world and I've always tried to spread love through music, because for me, music is love.
