Plus Instruments - Dub Is Enough

Following on from Plus Instruments' Love Is Enough Remixes EP comes an accompanying Dubs EP, featuring deeper reversions by Jamie Paton, Luke Solomon, Khidja and joining them with a breaks meets dubwise, Alphonse. Truus de Groot's return to her Plus Instruments project after a 30 years break saw the label pick up her off-kilter House roller, Love Is Enough for one of our (e)special remixing packages. Here then, we turn out attention to everyone's favourite, the Dubs. Starting with label mainframe, Jamie Paton, his Cloudy Dub-Out pulls his mix through modular prisms for heads down basement rumble. Echo chamber vocals, twisted syncopations and a bass to breakdown walls, this is Paton's true calling - dub to get lost in and rightful to kick off the EP. Next guest remixer de jour, Luke Solomon stays close to his original bumpin' remix, warping the vocal with skat'n'trippin wonk, all atop a funk bass line and riding shuffle percussion. Cha cha cha. On the flip, Khidja triumph again with a tougher version. Not a straight up dub of their remix, this pushes a nod to colder (wave) vibes, with industrial percussion riding high on their trademark production. Hard kick atop refrained synths, growing out of Eastern protoid routes to glimpse their future.
Finally, mystery man Alphonse comes in from the dark to close with a killer breaks inspired dub. Utilising the original's bass with an angular break, the intricate cut up percussion, Theremin and vocals all glide, keeping the head and feet (jazz) dancing for some (free) party sound system love. Dub is enough...

D Ball - Elements/doreen/healer

Our 003 has arrived, a trio of tracks from the vast archives of Salford's own Sonic Insomniac, Mr D.Ball. Although previously unheard, these tracks evoke instant feelings of nostalgia and reminiscence. As always Dave exhibits his effortless knack for combining emotive melodies with liquid basslines and refined percussive rhythms. From the majestic electric piano and live strings of title track 'Elements', to the graceful, wandering synth lead and growling bass of 'Doreen' through to the epic 13 minute B-side 'Healer' with its subtle chord progressions and sumptuous live bass crescendo.Timeless, sentimental music that will appeal as much to lovers ofclassic Techno such as Underground Resistance or Mayday as much as it will to fans of Ash Ra Tempel or Jean Luc Ponty. All tracks recorded in Salford between 2002-2006, extracted from minidisc 2015.

Matt Zo - Self Assemble 2x12"

Matt Zo

Self Assemble 2x12"

2x12inchMZ001
MAD ZOO
07.07.2016

After making some massive claims regarding electronic music last year which caused a stir in the dance music community, Mat Zo had a lot to live up to with his long awaited second album "Self Assemble". What didn't help was the fact that his first album, "Damage Control" was critically acclaimed by many within dance music and is now considered a modern-day masterpiece with mesmerising tracks such as The Sky and the massive Easy with Porter Robinson.Blending genres and sounds in a way only Zo can achieve, this record flows incredibly well as the tracks move from one to the other almost telling a story of the different styles of electronic music. At times the album is reminiscent of Zo's incredible Essential Mix from back in 2013 in the way that it progresses and constantly surprises the listeners. A lot funkier than Damage Control, it's no less incredible.
Beginning with the beautifully atmospheric "Order out of Chaos" which starts with an absolute wall of sound that boggles the mind in how Zo even went about designing something so complex, this sets the tone for the rest of the record in a cracking way. The melody soon crescendos and we're introduced in to the meat of the album with "The Enemy". Bringing out all the good funky vibes on this track, again Zo exhibits his insane production talents which are a staple of the album. Featuring vocals from the wonderful Sinead Egan, this is a great uplifting tune that'll no doubt have you dancing in your chair or in the club.
'Sinful" acts to continue the funky good-time vibes and transports us to a cool summertime drive. It has us yearning for happier times and again the guest vocals from I SEE MONSTAS go a long way in getting across this happy vibe. Featuring an uplifting almost french house inspired bassline and squelch synths that wouldn't look out of place on a Daft Punk or Madeon record, this is another stunning track from the record. "Patterns Emerging" feels like a bridge into the next section of the album and is unfortunately short. The orchestral element really brings out the emotion on this track and we only wish it was longer. "Killing Time" has those classic chopped up vocals that Zo uses to great effect and some nicely programmed drums that could be a nod to the drum and bass he used to put out under MRSA.'Smacked up on Jack" features some cool middle eastern sounds and a wacky vocal sample that helps to progress the album and keep the listener interested, again though we feel like it's a bit too short and are left wanting more. The next tune "Ruffneck Bad Boy VIP" is an absolute mammoth and one of our favourites off the record. Opening with an immense rhodes melodic sequence and after some nice vocals, the track rips into the electro house and dubstep infused banger that it really is. Some dirty, dirty sound design and drum production will have the dance floors going wild and shows us again why Zo is so good, it's a far cry from the funkier elements of the earlier stuff on the album and shows how Zo can show off a range of electronic sounds. "Lights Out" is a straight up hard hitting electro banger with an infectious vocal sample that only needs to be heard to be understood. Not much more needs to be said about it! Coming into the last section of the record, "Soul Food" returns us to the groove with an astonishing house beat and bass line that have us questioning how Zo makes it so hard not to smile listening to this album."Stereo no Aware" starts sounding like it's taken straight from a space movie epic and soon transforms into a goose bump inducing melody with a driving growling bass line that bring back the epic dubstep we all used to love a couple of years ago. Skrillex eat your heart out. Finishing off this record on a more emotional note, "Too Late" starts off like a guitar ballad and then transforms into something totally different. Egan's melancholic vocals enhance this track to great effect and is all backed by Zo's lovely downbeat production until we're treated to a monster of a climax around half way through the track which will surely blow the cobwebs right off you. Zo says goodbye to us with the phenomenal "The Last Transmission" and what a way this is to close out an incredible sophmore album for the English producer. The melancholic piano chords are a subtle and pleasing way to close out this journey of a record. Mat Zo really has outdone himself here and we're really looking forward to hearing some of these bombs dropped live. Surely a contender for album of the year at such an early stage, yet again it's only the best delivered by Mat Zo.
Latest album, Damage Control was Grammy-nominated for Best Dance/Electronic Album last year

Initially envisioned as a concept album about a charity shop-bought doll's house, it mutated into a full on dance record. With the release of new single 'Marzipan', Flory presents a remix by Ray Mang (DFA, R&S), who twists the track into a shimmering, disco delight

Mark Barrott - Sketches From An Island 2

180 gr gatefold 2LP with DL card, D-side has etched design

The first 'Sketches From An Island' album garnered support from a diverse set of trailblazers. From Gilles Peterson to Trevor Jackson, Boiler Room to Pitchfork, Mark Barrott has become an unlikely hero for Balearic music after only a few short years living in Ibiza.

Barrott founded the International Feel label in Uruguay in 2008. Ironically his formula is to not pay attention to the outside world, valuing only his own intuition, which has more than once led him to drop out and find himself on the other side of the world. Barrott's impermanence and isolation has steered the International Feel label to become a new voice for dance music, standing apart from current trends and one that many people are now gravitating towards.

The Fader noted that Sketches is "brimming with New Age arpeggios and field recordings of local wildlife". For Barrott it acts as a bridge between his own spirituality and creative expression. "Humanity is facing a big challenge at the moment. We're at a fork in the path,' he muses. 'More so than ever people are now pushing the boundaries, taking more drugs and seeking sensory overload, driven in part by the hedonism traditionally associated with dance music. For me, it's time to focus more on making healing music, on trying to find the balance between all this wonderful technology and the freedom it gives us with the natural world. This is one of the overriding inspirations for the Sketches series.'

'I am also telling stories of everyday life in Ibiza, soundtracking my life here through local field recordings, dusty synths, some African percussion and a bit of slide guitar. This music isn't about finding the latest trends in the way other dance music is, it's a lot more like folk music, taking mood, atmosphere and composition and threading stories around that framework.'

Balearic music gave birth to dance music as we know it, but its diversity and openmindedness was lost in it's translation to the stark modern world. As Pitchfork stated in their piece on Sketches, "It may be overshadowed by billboards of current trends, but the spirit remains intact."

While the original spirit from the first Sketches album remains, tracks like the instrumental
emotional pop of 'Driving to Cap Negret' and the heavy weather atmosphere of 'Distant Storms at Sea' highlight a compositional leap forward. The polyrhythmic joy of 'Cirrus & Cumulus' and overall feeling portrayed by Barrott's idiosyncratic aural oddities, highlight a composer comfortable in his own skin and very content with his surroundings and day to day life.

"It was also influenced by playing at La Torre last summer,' Barrott explains of his residency at Ibiza's latest sunset mecca. 'I loved seeing how people react to the wonderful spectacle of the sunset and how you can create a movie soundtrack where the sunset is the film."

Barrott also held a residency at Ibiza's infamous Pikes alongside DJ Harvey last summer. But is happiest at home, "engulfed in Mark world, which is all about my wife and family, the cats, sunsets, eating well, meditating, hanging out....and cricket."

A brave and outspoken maverick, Sketches bares his soul and heart, perhaps the reason so many are drawn to it. ' This new album is a metaphor for some of the big questions. I believe in reincarnation within a life. The person I am today, began at age 30 when I woke up on a beach and had an epiphany. I was very different person before that and since that point I have been very fortunate to flow from one synchronous moment to another. I've realised this journey is the journey within. If one second of any of the Sketches records help people achieve that on their own, then I'm eternally grateful."

Florent F And Yo-one Sutter - The Hinge Project

Relentless stuff from KAT with release number 26 coming via the Hinge Project, a disco balled collaboration between Florent F and Yo-One Sutter. Having a penchant for all things Rinder & Lewis is no bad thing and that's what this release if all about, a cap doffed in their El Coco direction. First up we have 'Cocomotion 79' : A top draw, classy as, uber cool disco lounge biggie that was out in (you guessed it) 1979. Things have been slightly slowed down from the original and chopped in all the right places taking this from over 10 mins down to just under 7 strengthening those fender Rhodes and string sections along the way.
Next up is 'It's Your Last Chance'... A sultry mid-tempo ditty with an absolute killer groove edited down to accentuate that ace vocal hook. Tempo'd for Dj pleasure (without losing that all important live feel), subtle delays effects sprinkled over the top with a filtered mid-section for added oomph - massive ! On the flip we have 'Love Exciter' - A full on dancer with bonafied disco hand claps, squelchy bass, clavs and strings. Here the tempo has been brought down considerably from the original with the beats are locked down for mixing delights and finishing things off nicely we have the classic 'Coco Kane'. Insane disco loops, massive bassline and all round killer string arrangement rounds things up very nicely.

Nick Monaco - Mating Call 2x12

San Francisco-based DJ/producer Nick Monaco has long been part of the Soul Clap family, releasing his first 12" on the label back in 2012. Mating Call, a double 12" set running at album length, is easily his most expansive release yet. It's typically eccentric, delivering a range of songs - featuring his own distinctive vocals - that blend numerous styles whilst retaining a loose, funky and altogether rather kaleidoscopic feel. It's rooted in Balearic pop, but also touches on dub, deep house, boogie, dub disco and a strangely deep and contemporary take on the triple-beat rhythms of glam rock. It's hard to accurately describe, but is really rather good; certainly, it's one of Soul Clap's strongest releases of recent times.

Juan Ramos - Last Of The Natives B/w Enemy Of Enemy Is Friend

Juan Ramos lives on planet Earth but channels voices from the aether. This is his first offering for the ESP Institute. On side A, Last Of The Natives shows us just what we're dealing with, a master manipulator of sound and consciousness. Juan culls the toughest kick drums and thickest latex bass slaps from a deep burial in our psyche and peppers them with alien chants and fleeting electronic flutes—a combustible sense of spontaneity that may at first appear chaotic but after fully immersed in Juan's demented world, we find ourselves willfully under his control. On side B, Enemy Of Enemy Is Friend also sets off from a disorienting place where a slow progression of acid, shakers and toms takes a good minute to allow us some footing around the groove. Once settled into his sophisticated rhythm, Juan opens the door to a glorious combination of chords, clanking guitars, shakers that scrub back and forth and the occasional smear of paranormal synth. We at the ESP Institute are enamored by Juan's seemingly infinite skill for crafting mood and extracting optimism from darkness, but seriously, what color SpeedoTM should she wear this summer

Mister Ho & Heap - Feeling Hopeful B/w Gis Gis

Mister Ho & Heap close their eyes and float downstream. This is their second offering for the ESP Institute. On side A, Feeling Hopeful is a straight-ahead burner comprised of minimal thuds, bumps, honks, blips, bleeps and bloops—a harmonious arrangement of percussive elements and soaring synth chords that feels both slow and fast paced, sunset and sunrise hour, island back roads and traffic in metropolis. On side B, Gis Gis explores a similar notion of contrast, setting a the scene with a driving mechanical hi-hat that never dips below the selection of luscious melodies—a cha-cha bassline, breezy chords and a slippery lead hook that collectively invite us all for poolside Pin~a Coladas at the Ho & Heap villa. These two songs were conceived in the year of the monkey.

Siren (ft. Mr. Reed) - A/way (faze Action Rmx)

Siren began recording in earnest during the winter of 2013, but has beginnings which date farther back, to their mutual residencies at NYC's storied night-spot APT, and to the parties they produced together in APT's wake. Events with names like Camille 3000, Adult Section and Strobe Lodge were lovingly presented, with bold, romantic graphics and a strong, specific statement that refinement and transgression can, and should always hang together.

A Canal Street loft, A Bushwick print-shop, a former ballroom dance studio in Chinatown, an old theater, an idyllic poolside on Long Island, a burlesque parlor - all locations which have played host to Jesrani & Kane's unique way of playing for party people. Siren champions a melodic and eclectic-but-unified style of playing which has earned them a following in their explorations of what makes a night of mixed music dynamic, fluid and ultimately transformative.

Over the course of conversations about songs played and casual examinations of each other's work, a studio dialogue developed naturally and led to regular sessions. A battery of songs were sketched, the name Siren selected, and a new chapter begun. Their easy bond of playing records together has extended into a studio practice ready to yield a significant body of work.

Siren's first offering, 'Gauntlet,' is a moody, rich maelstrom of a song which embraces everything from heavy disco, to West African guitar, to soundtrack and theme music, to Adrian Belew. Released on Compost in late 2014, it was met with superlative praise from fellow DJs and dance music press alike. Their second single, entitled 'A/Way' with Mr. Reed stands in proud, stark counterpoint to their first. A sunny, wind-swept trip of a song, this single is a paean to a life un-hampered and in one's own power. Anchored by a strong-but-easy bass line which recalls Norman Whitfield, and punctuated by horns which gently hint at Burt Bacharach, the song is propelled forward by a driving, joyous guitar groove which embodies the spirit of the most uplifting of late-60 & 70s rock & roll. A soaring, plaintive vocal by Mr. Reed ties it all together into a glorious, bittersweet parcel to be delivered straight to the heart.

Siren has also completed the second of its first two remixes, and will begin touring together as a DJ unit, all due autumn 2015. Sound the alarm.

Fernando - Mid Decade Ep, Dj Nature Rmx

Fernando Pulichino, the Argentinian multi-instrumentalist and producer, has been releasing music since 2001. He is part of Silver City, and was one of four members of the infamous 20:20 Soundsystem (alongside Ralph Lawson & co.) and his own solo productions have featured on labels such as International Feel, Redux, Under the Shade, Nang and many more. Fernando debuts on Futureboogie this October with the 'Mid Decade' EP, featuring a remix from DJ Nature AKA Milo Johnson (Golf Channel Recordings/Jazzy Sport) 'Ride On' features driving live bass and overdubbed electric guitars, modulating around an arpeggio synth soaked with Balearic vibes, all supported by vocal snippets and a lush production value. Stripping the original way back, DJ Nature builds the groove naturally; adding his own percussion that dominates this laid back departure from the original mix. Title track, 'Mid Decade', is a melting pot of synthesis, and harmony and crisp drums, whilst Fernando's love of a pumping bassline again shines through clearly on 'Trespassing', and the bright synths chords, flanged percussion and distorted lead guitars bring much musicality to the production.

Effortlessly weaving entirely new sub-genres, while daring to convey their fragility, Deniz is once again inventing a fresh sound palette, combining the music with visual art and creating a deeper live experience for the tour entitled ëDouble Exposureí that will accompany her new LED installation, ëThe Introspectacularí. Mastering a new dexterity across the whole album, Deniz conquers stillness and rich rhythms, once again turning house on its head with an unhurried approach more in line with a hip hop pacing that enriches the sound of tomorrow, bringing attitude back to electronic music. Going beyond the realms of the expected, the striking artistic passion emanating from this petite girl from Turkey beats through every track.

Mr Macdonald - East Dry River

In 1979, the critically acclaimed artist Ralph MacDonald (who co-wrote 'Just the Two of Us' with Bill Withers) released his third LP via Marlin Records. Though the reception for the album was mixed - most agreed on it's musical highlight, 'East Dry River'.

37 years later, and just in time for the arrival of summer, Fly By Night Music's Calypso weighs in with a fitting edit, respecting and captivating the original beauty of the track, making just a few subtle changes whilst revamping the percussion.

Someone pack the suncream, this party's going outside...

Pillowtalk - Lullaby

Ever the shape -shifters and genre-benders, on their newest EP 'Lullaby' San-Francisco dance darlings PillowTalk move away from their innovative brand of housified soul and look toward the misty terrain of lush, 80s-inspired synth-pop. Turn down the collars on your Izods, switch on your Walkman, and drift into that delicious space between...between waking and sleeping, love and loss, making out and making up.

A swirl of Rhodes, tape delay, and pedals, 'Lullaby' is more a dreamscape than a track. Inspired by work from acclaimed illustrator David Polonsky, 'Lullaby' is a sonic map of that perpetual dusk in which the tender of heart dwell. Cascading handclaps, delicate bubbles and squeaks, and a characteristically spare kick are cut through by a punchy live bassline that exudes more humanity than a million synthesizers could ever imagine. For a sense of the mood just imagine sweet caresses through a fog that barely obscures your lover's face, or an old teen romance on faded VHS. When vocalist Sammy D, sounding more pensive and breathless than ever before, obliquely asks an unnamed someone, 'you're not a weapon, are you' one wonders if he's not thinking about PillowTalk's own ability to destroy our own expectations about what dance music is supposed to be.

For all the sullen moodiness of 'Lullaby,' the EPs B-side, 'We All Have Rhythm,' brings a return of the sassy, white-boy R&B swagger we've come to know and love from the boys. No more feeling sorry for ourselves, we're all invited to sing along over a slice of uplifting electronic psych-funk that is sure to wake up any slumbering afterparty.

Pillowtalk - Je Ne Sais Quoi - 2x12"

San Francisco threepiece live band PillowTalk are surprising dance music treasures. Manipulating pop melodies, classic R&B, soul and boogie into the loose rhythms of house music and performing live on stages in nightclub settings across the world, they have bridged an impossible gulf between worlds and created new expectations for electronic producers and live musicians alike.

Their success is twofold, for not only are they stand out performers capturing the stage with Sammy D's bold and sultry vocals, multiinstrumentalist Ryan Williams' dextrous guitar and keys and Mikey Tello's fluid synth work (not to mention their matching classic black tie attire) they are also musical chameleons. As comfortable creating the upbeat 80sinspired synthpop heard in lead single 'Lullaby', as the psychedelic funk of 'We All Have Rhythm' and the classic rock and roll of 'Devil's Run', PillowTalk also adeptly deliver slow electronic ballads ('Naive') and house driven anthems ('If I Try') for their eloquent debut LP, 'Je Ne Sais Quoi' on their home label Wolf + Lamb. A soundtrack to long nights, lazy days and the hazy space between sleeping and waking, the record spans everything you want from the band: sunsplashed jams, peaktime party tunes and lowlit moments of intimacy.

Simon Garcia - Radians

Radians

13.10.2014

Simon Garcia joins the Freerange fold for their 196th release where he delivers two brilliant originals that seem to encapsulate the label's sound perfectly. The Spanish producer has slowly but surely built his reputation over the last few years with quality releases on Guy Gerber's Supplemental Facts, Ripperton's Perspectiv and most recently Steve Bug's Poker Flat Recordings.
Radians instantly draws you in with a heavy, looped-up rolling bassline and driving hats creating an intense groove for the slowly building chords and arpeggiating layers of synths. Echoing claps bring hints of techno to the track and the weaving theramin line throws in another curveball when trying to pigeonhole the style of this track. Best to just say that we loved this on first listen, reminding us of some of the best Milton Jackson releases over the years.
On How Long, Simon drops the BPM's a touch for a brilliant warm up jam which oozes with a low-slung funk, a simple chiming melody building to a peak where waves of sparkling chords are ready and waiting to make love to your ears on the dancefloor.

Finally, we're very pleased to have Matthew Styles onboard for his remix of Radians. Matthew has been delivering the goods time after time with standout releases on Running Back, Classic and Tamed to name a few. Remixes on Crosstown Rebels, Tsuba and Visionquest show how diverse he can go but always with his own style and attention to detail in the production which impresses us most. Here he comes up trumps once again with a rolling, stripped-back techy house groove which really locks into a hypnotic vibe. And already tried and tested by Dinky in Panarama Bar to great response!

25.09.2012

Just over a year ago, in July 2011, Harmless Records released their first installment in their new Mixology series, releasing Mixology-The Definitive Salsoul Mixes. This triple album featured thirty-one tracks from disco's premier label, Salsoul. Now the Mixology series will return on 20th August 2012, with Harmless Records turning their attention to another of disco's most important labels SAM Records. Mixology-Sam Records Extended Play is released on 3 different vinyl samplers featuring edits by the likes of Todd Terje, 6th Borough Project, Maxxi Soundsystem & Soul Clap. Before I tell you about the highlights of Mixology-SAM Records Extended Play, I'll tell you about the history of Sam Records.
When Sam Weiss founded SAM Records in Long Island City, New York in 1976, he was something of a veteran of the music industry. He'd been involved in the music industry since the late forties, when he and his brother Hy founded Parody Records. Although the company wasn't a commercial success, and soon folded, the Weiss brothers persevered. Eight years later, in 1954, they founded Madison Records, which was primarily a vehicle for releasing R&B records. Soon, Madison was releasing soul, doo wop, pop, rock, soul and gospel. Madison continued right through until the late seventies. By then, Sam Weiss had founded another record label, Sam Records, which he specifically setup to cash in on disco's popularity.
