It's not everyday that pianist and composer, Francesco Tristano, joins forces with one of the Belleville Three - the godfathers of Detroit techno - and yet, anyone who's followed the Luxembourg artist will know that expectation is not a currency he deals in.

Set for release on Transmat, the groundbreaking label from said techno pioneer, Derrick May, Surface Tension is not just the latest album from the prolific Tristano, but perhaps the most significant in his ongoing explorations into electronic music. Described by the man himself as his "most techno and synth-based project yet," the eight-track effort is both a celebration of electronic instrumentation and the first record May has worked extensively on for the better part of two decades. "I had to lure him into my studio," Tristano says of May with a smile, "he was like Alice in Wonderland when he saw the synthesizers."

Originally developed as a way create new material for Tristano's p:anorig project - a unique live set-up debuted at Barcelona's Sónar festival earlier this year, which finds the artist surrounded by large array of keyboards, synthesizers and other equipment (although ironically, no piano) in full view of the audience - Surface Tension grew into a project in its own right. Now 34 years old, Tristano explains that he is only now at a time in his life where he has a studio he can truly call his own. "I can hook up all these synthesizers that I've picked up over the years," he continues, "it's the fulfillment of that." With an instrumentarium of analogue, digital, classic and modern gear - ranging from Prophets to Moogs, to Rolands and Yamahas - at his and May's disposal, Tristano has aimed to keep processing to a minimum from the word go. The pair aren't just using these synths, they're paying tribute to them, honoring the rich, recognisable sound palettes that have made them household names.

The result is an album that feels, at once, nostalgic and fresh, that feels like an old friend, but one who never ceases to surprise. From the ambient vision of 'Esoteric Thing', drifting along to the sound of birdsong, to more beat-centric pieces such as 'The Mentor' and the quirky 'Xokolade' , the equipment, and the love it's been treated with, shines through. Both Tristano and May's individual presences are obvious too, yet work in a way so complimentary to each other as to blur the lines at which they cross. 'Pacific FM' is a lesson in uplifting techno, keys fluttering over padfoot bass, the futuristic Detroit dance of 'In Da Minor' is undercut by eerie, unpredictable glass synth-work, 'Rocco's Bounce' is free-form jazz tugged into line by structured four-to-the-floor, there's even an itchy, jittering, Decca Records-sanctioned remix of Japanese pianist and general Renaissance man, Ryuichi Sakamoto's classic 'Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence'.

Those hoping for a Francesco Tristano piano album: be duly warned. "The piano is there, but it's more like the shadow of the piano. We don't have the mass of that sound, it's more like the reminiscence of that sound," says Tristano. But it's this which gives Surface Tension the aforementioned significance. Tristano hasn't abandoned his roots - they're deep, but there, for those who wish to find them - yet has simultaneously transcended what it means to be a pianist in the 21st century. Tristano and May have brought together old and new, within themselves and on a wider musical level, and in doing so, rekindled the spirit of futurist expression that techno was first founded on all those years ago.

Spell PETS backwards to get STEP. Spell STEP forwards to find PETS going back to basics. STEP is the new concept vinyl only label from the founder of PETS, Catz 'N Dogz, that highlights the rawest forms and root functions of quality club music. STEP finds the fundamental groove with undertheradar house and techno that is isn't afraid to be rough around the edges. STEP is limited promo and all about the music. Each new STEP will be released every four months on vinyl only.

Having provided a remix for the label back in 2010 Ethyl & Flori now release their first full ep for the label, 'The Last Ninja' kicks things off with an unmistakable old school tech-house feel which to us at FOF recalled the classic 'Architecture' dj mix by Terry Francis with it's punchy kick, sharp percussion and imbued uplifting warmth. 'Fornjot' by Flori on the flip is a different proposition, although still deeply entrenched in a throwback to yesterdays production stylings, this is a much more techno orientated groove with the tracks repeated metallic bass riff anchoring the track in a gloriously hypnotic yet fresh way.

secretsundaze return with SS016 - DJ Qu's mighty SS1 EP. secretsundaze and Qu have developed a special relationship with him playing at many of their parties in London but also at their events in the likes of New York, Berlin and Barcelona.

A full 3 track EP on a label outside of his own Strength Music is rare for DJ Qu so its serious coup for secretsundaze.

Title and lead track 'SS1' is quite simply huge. Definitely one of Qu's most peak time tracks, a slamming groove is underpinned with a bleepy, squelchy sounds and some dramatic synth stabs. This should be a highlight in many DJs sets for months to come.

With 'Fearless' DJ Qu goes deep. A typically eerie yet soulful groove creeps along complimented by deep strings before the sampled and skewed spoken word creeps in. 'Loveboxx' is a dark and sinister track with stuttering drums and more of Qu's trademark treated vocal samples.

The track is really lifted up with some string like keys and this 3rd and final track rounds up what is a masterful display by a producer in his prime.

Keith Worthy The Price of Non-Conformance Long established Detroit talent Keith Worthy traverses a fine line between deep, bumpy house and raw techno on his debut double album, The Price of Non-Conformance. T.P.O.N.C. is a conceptual project that takes you on a virtual walk through the streets of Detroit. From a musical standpoint, the sound and feel of T.P.O.N.C. aligns with Worthy's own DNA, a complex blend of house and techno, and all while incorporating a degree of fantasy into every composition.

As an export of one of the fastest rising electronic hotbeds in the UK, established Belfast DJ and producer Jordan is developing his eponymous night into a brand new label for 2016. Featuring on point and house and techno from the man himself, Nocturne will also call upon plenty of high profile remixers and really aims to keep the spotlight on the exciting Northern Irish scene.

Nocturne, which started out as an illicit afterhours gathering and has also spawned a weekly Saturday offshoot, The Night Institute, is a party that is very much setting the local agenda and as such has gotten plenty of kudos thanks to tasteful bookings like Roman Flugel, Session Victim and Gerd Janson.

After the success of the parties, the logical next step is to develop the brand into an outlet for quality club beats. The man behind it all is Jordan McCuaig, someone who has impressed with releases on Luke Solomon's Classic Music Company, Extended Play and Made Fresh Daily. Like his home city, he is very much a star on the rise, as this first new EP on his own label proves.

Expert opener 'Killing Mockingbirds' is a jostling, busy cut with warm and dubby drums, loose claps and a fat bass line that rips right through the middle. It's fresh and inviting and has some well sculpted synths to add colour and heat. On remix duties first is Borrowed Identity, one of the breakout stars of recent times who releases on DVS1's Mistress label and the infamous Ostgut Ton. His take on the original is expressive indeed, and the result is a peak time cut with hulking drums, catch chords and knotted bass riffs that really get you going.

Next, 'The Block' is a classically inclined house cut with a wild and rich bassline spraying about between pinging kick drums, spangled synths and explosive snares and is a truly dynamic workout that will make every dance floor jack. The last of the originals is 'Strung Out', and it has rinsing breakbeats, wild, pitchbending tones and a dark jungle energy that makes it perfect for freakier late night sessions.

This one gets remixed in style by Adesse Versions, the acclaimed British techno talent who runs his own label and relates his killer wares on others like Numbers and Local Talk. In his hands it is an expansive, tough house groove with punchy kicks and perfectly smeared synths bringing a great sense of soul to the table.This is the start of a sure to be exciting new label that pays homage to its local roots as well as to Jordan's own well informed dance music understanding. As such, you should waste no time in getting behind it.

Wayne Gardiner is something of an unsung hero in the deep House world.
His productions on numerous labels (Nervous, Strictly Rhythm, Ibadan etc) under his own name, as Classic Man, Logic, Track Masters and many more all have the perfect balance of rough and smooth, deep pads, jazzy keys, floating melodies and chopped vocal samples are all underpinned by tough driving beats and percussion creating his trademark sound.

The EP features 2 mixes of killer A-Side "Come On, Do Anything", 2 mixes of the slamming B-Side cut "I Need You So Bad" and finally "The Basement Jam" which rounds things out. 5 tracks of pure 1992 NYC Garage, one for true aficionados and House heads!

Jeremy a.k.a. 'Underground Paris' is a renowned record collector & crate-digger. He is the founder of "My Love Is Underground", a vinyl-only label that's been responsible for the revival of the "authentic House groove" in Europe recently. Also a DJ, he travels all over Europe every week-end to spread his message! Pascal Rioux has worn many hats in the music industry over the past 15 years: Founder of Favorite Recordings, Rotax Disques and Big Single labels, he's also known for his many DeepHouse productions in the late 90's When those two House lovers met they immediately got along, building the idea of reissuing some obscure gems on a compilation. Deep'a & Biri's Black Crow Records further expands its horizons with its seventh release, welcoming another new artist to the family following appearances by 2030, Aril Brihka, Hakimonu, Luke Hess, ROD, Inland and Markus Suckut. The Analog Roland Orchestra's label debut follows the widely acclaimed 2030 EP and shares with it a widening of the label's sonic scope to once again showcase Deep'a & Biri's desire to reach beyond techno and explore ambient and cinematic musical textures. ac$ (aka AARON CARLSON) drops this 4 track EP of deep, Detroit tinged house hybrids featuring two tracks mixed by OSUNLADE (at his studio in Greece). His release on the now defunct Portland label STARBASS and his own TRACK 29 imprint have been well received and sought after. Hand stamped with DL.

ac$ has been secretly busy, amassing synths, and exploring improvised jams in his basement in the Parkrose section of Portland. For a time, these loose, exploratory sessions brought in many a wandering musician. These sounds from ac$ where heard by OSUNLADE, who at this point was residing in Greece. Through conversation, a meeting of minds, which led to ac$ making a pilgrimage to the isles, and in return led to several sessions yet to be heard. The mixdowns on this release are the first taste.
These first results of ac$ sessions with OSUNLADE in Greece have brought together dance music and free improvisation. The result at times strikes one of the spirit of CAPTAIN BEEFHEART ala “CANDY CORN”, in that the elements slowly swirl together, with elements wandering in and out, like that of a musician entering and exiting the room, yet the ingenuity and drive of the rhythm track keeps things in a consistent, catchy framework.

the label say"Producer and boss of Mathematics records, Chicago's Jamal Moss a.k.a Hieroglyphic Being is a one-off musical explorer. Jamal's music takes cues from the EBM and House that played a huge part in the city's musical underground in the late eighties and early nineties, notably Ron Hardy and Adonis, but also Industrial, Avant-Jazz and Noise.

His tireless schedule of rough low-key releases over the last 12 years and his intense, very physical, psychedelic music, have made him a key exponent or maybe even a pioneer of what's recently come to be named 'Outsider House', although he prefers the more Sun-Ra like descriptors of 'Rhythmic Cubism' and 'Cosmic Be-Bop'.


His releases, much like his music, have straddled House labels and the more leftfield avant garde electronic imprints with ease. However his deeply held Afrofuturist intent and the discipline of his radical designs set him apart from the pack. Always moving forward, his music is an ever-evolving transmission from his mind to our bodies, or as he sees it, a form of meditation that the supple, tuned listener will enjoy immensely."

When San Francisco's ICEE HOT launched its own record label last fall with a new record from Ghosts On Tape (one of the party's founders), there was a lot of talk about how quiet he's been in recent years. Now, a mere nine months later, that's all changed.

Following the release of "Nature's Law," Ghosts On Tape has been on an absolute tear, dropping numerous remixes and turning out new tunes at a blinding clip. At this point, he's built up a solid reserve of dancefloor weapons, and ICEE HOT is thrilled to begin unleashing it upon the world.

"No Guestlist" is the first salvo, and it's an absolute stormer. Combining the brash spirit of classic Chicago with Ghosts On Tape's drum-heavy sensibilities, the much sought-after tune has been lighting up ICEE HOT for months and is poised to do some major damage. The producer's own "Underground Mix" takes things deeper, albeit while keeping the sass of the original version intact.

Finnish producer Arttu has also been enlisted to remix "No Guestlist," and kicks off the b-side with a playful and light-hearted take that employs snapping drum patterns and gleefully lilting melodies. Rounding out the record is another Ghosts On Tape original, "Still Got the Feeling," a darker, slower burning cut that reflects just how effective he can be when experimenting with a more techno-flavored template.

Gary Martin releases his second sequential EP on Motech Records, the 'This is It' EP. The Ep features two more exclusive tracks, 'This is It' a driving composition accented with piano and synth patterns and subtle funky movement, and 'Galaxy Style' a percussive, building composition expertly laced with muted samples and synth progressions.

Included on this EP are two remixes from techno veterans Mark Broom and Rolando. Broom takes on 'This is It' chopping the original into a hyper dance floor drubbing burner. Rolando re-treats 'Galaxy Style' into a composition that unfolds as it progresses, bathed in signature Rolando production elements.

On "shtum 004" he explores beats between dusty House, his Hip-Hop roots and off-the-grid drum patterns. The record starts with "YouAndMe" which showcases dirty percussion work and a cracking sample over an unstoppable piano melody. "Feli" is a House killer track through and through. And when that chord changes hands are up! Based on spooky synths "PukPukPuk" sounds like nasty Ambient with heavy beats. That tune surely cuts its own path on the dance floor. Finally, "Stumm" feels like one single Rave build-up. But with understatement it denies the climax. Once again, the illustration on the B-side label is by Aram Haydeyan.

A year after his last outing on the label, Gunnar Haslam is back on Delsin with four more tracks of idiosyncratic techno. Opening up this EP with the title track, Haslam cooks up a spangled brew of erratic synths and spinning hi hats and ties them together with a heavy rubber kick drum. Followed by 'Sarsi' which is then completely different, it's a beatless and emotionally forlorn cut that still manages to take you somewhere special. Deep dancefloor business taking over on the b-side. Scurrying alien sounds closed by a frenzied techno trip. Each track here is different from the last, and each track here is a refreshing proposition from one of the most interesting guys around.

Uno Mas are no strangers to groove-laden club music with memorable hooks. The contingent return to the fore with 'Star Wars Dance / Dividance', a brace of retro-synth cuts (Acid and Square waves at the ready), curated specifically for a vinyl release.

CE round off the World Electronix series with a remixes EP featuring tracks from each of the 4 volumes. Morphology's Darkstar is remixed by The Hacker, The Exatics Ten Days is given a dark twist by Sync 24, J.T.C's In Transit is refunked by DMX Krew and the EP is finished off with Marco Benardi's Morbider mix of Sync 24 & Deixis Ah Ah Ah.

'FT', which Sean describes as 'electronic, psychedelic soul', sees him collaborate with an extraordinarily diverse range of artists, spanning some of the most significant underground musical icons of the past 40 years.

This stellar collection of artists includes:- Yoko Ono, avant garde musician, conceptual artist and one of the most controversial female artists of all time, Bootsy Collins, widely regarded as one of the finest Funk/R'n'B bass players in the world, Dave Ball, co-founder of Soft Cell, notorious UK synth pioneers with the uniquely sleazy electric soul sound, Fred Schneider from the manic, bizarre and highly innovative US new-wave group B-52's and Alan Vega, vocalist of the essential and groundbreaking New York duo Suicide. Hifi Sean is the songwriter, DJ and producer Sean Dickson. He is most famously known as front man of the Scottish band The Soup Dragons, responsible for a series of huge hit singles, 'I'm Free', 'Divine Thing', and 'Mother Universe'. Dickson was also the main creative force behind the follow-up project The High Fidelity, a much more artful and intimate project, critically acclaimed for the releases 'Demonstration' and 'The Omnichord Album' . Those albums included two very rare musical collaborations between Dickson and legendary Radio DJ John Peel and also the late Mickey Finn (one half of 70's musical giants T-Rex). In some ways, this was the germination of an idea that would provide the conceptual foundation behind 'FT'.

Sean underwent a total musical reinvention at the turn of the millennium, evolving and transforming his creative energies from a guitar playing band front-man to a DJ. He began playing house, disco and electro in Glasgow's burgeoning and innovative club scene, before relocating to London in 2006 where he began to become a staple figure at deep house underground and afterhours clubs.

As the artist Hifi Sean he is now a highly respected DJ and producer, having held residencies at Fire, Ministry of Sound, Shoreditch House and Savage Disco, as well as playing regular international shows in Europe and the USA.

In creating 'FT', Sean has carefully fused elements from his past and present musical lives into something unique and joyous.

The album is a journey through psychedelic dance rhythms, and electronic and soulful moods, drawing from elements of Disco, Chicago house, Detroit techno, and London underground party roots. 'FT' is at once an homage to the foundations of his musical heart and a determined attempt to forge something new and vital from the sounds that have fuelled his life in music. It is also partly an autobiography in audio of the past 15 years of his life observing dancefloors, and growing as a producer.

The album guides the listener from soulful euphoria to Balearic bliss, new wave punk-house to conceptual cosmic voyage, ending with the crescendo of the full-on orchestral movement 'A Kiss Before Dying' with Alan Vega from Suicide. 'FT' carefully underlines the gifts of each of its vocalists, a work which is the instinctive pulse of multiple dances floor tempered and crafted by the nuanced heart and head of the songwriters craft.

Calling upon his 25 years of music business experience and connections, Sean worked hard to pull together a collection of quite possibly one of the most impressive range of collaborations witnessed on a single release in recent memory. These transatlantic recordings were made possible through collaborations recorded in London, Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Cincinnati, Washington, Glasgow and Toronto.

Sean says of the project: I think of this album as a curated gallery of all my favourite sounds and loves, and when moulded together, the record paints a unique and personal picture of my life experience.'
