Alex Pervukhin / Ocean T - In The Shadow EP

Two previous Laconica records were mentioned on Trommel Top100 and now we are finally back.

After a short break, Ukrainian Lviv based label presents a powerful 4-tracker. This time we stamped on wax tunes which we tested on dance floors for quite some time. On the A-side, label owner Alex Pervukhin drops a banger "Thomas Jefferson' which you may have heard in iO (Mulen) sets. Classic MPC swing plus analog synths remind of that real tech-house feel that we all miss. "Most People" on A2 is a deep and sexy tune which will be perfect for warm-ups.

Some different vibes on the flip side. Lviv's finest Ocean T creates a really magical atmosphere in "Moving On", which will be perfect for euphoric moments of every set (we know it well because we played it for 2 years!). And final track is deep and trippy "Breathe In" - the perfect ending of this EP.

Keep it Laconic!

Coil

Musick to Play In The Dark

2x12inchDAIS155LPC3
Dais Records
01.01.2021

Few groups in recent history forged as confounding and alchemical a body of work as Coil, the partnership of Peter 'Sleazy' Christopherson and John Balance. From album to album and phase to phase their recordings spelunk perplexing depths of esoteric industrial, occult electronics, and drugged poetry, both embodying and alienating parallel currents of their peers. The late 1990's in particular were a fertile era for the duo, embracing chance, chaos, and collaboration, enhanced by recent advancements in synthesis and sampling. Fittingly, at the summit of the decade's long, intoxicated arc, their divergent strains of interstitial ritual congealed into one of Coil's most celebrated and hallucinatory creations: Musick To Play In The Dark.

Convening at Balance and Christopherson's vast Victorian house / studio in the coastal town of Weston-super-Mare, they began a series of ambitious sessions aided by inner circle associates Thighpaulsandra and Drew McDowall. Although the creative process was admittedly “iterative” and “a bit of a drug blur,” the results are astoundingly inventive and well realized, winding through shades of divination dirge, wormhole kosmische, noir lounge, ominous humor, and black mass downtempo, guided by Balance's cryptic lunar muse, which he announces on the opening track: “This is moon musick / in the light of the moon.”

What's most remarkable about the album 20 years after its release is how brazen, insular, and unpredictable it still feels. The songs follow an allusive, altered state logic all their own, warping from microscopic ripples of glitch and breath to widescreen warlock psychedelia and back again, as much hyper-sensory as interdimensional. Even within a catalog as eclectic as Coil's, Musick is a mystifying collection, oneiric evocations of desire, decadence, dinner jazz, and dietary advice, far beyond the pale of whatever gothic industrial ambiguity birthed such a journey. The record closes with a slow, starlit shuffle, bathed in seething sweeps of spectral texture and high cathedral keys, like approaching the altar of some arcane temple. As the trance thickens Balance's voice rises, processed into an increasingly eerie, gaseous haze, but he resists these unseen forces, intent on delivering a final sermon: “Through hissy mists of history / the dreamer is still dreaming / the dreamer is still dreaming.”

Smoove & Turrell - Stratos Bleu Remixed

Smoove & Turrell have never been scared of a gamble or two and over the course of their career, and their latest album - 'Stratos Bleu' marked some of the biggest stylistic changes to date. Though long lauded as one of the UK's top bands in funk and soul circles, their album was a decidedly rawer analogue affair drawing on influences as diverse as Detroit techno, Bristol bass as well as the party starting breakbeat funk they are so well known for.
Hitting #1 position in the Official UK Dance Charts on release week and grabbing the Album of the Day accolade from BBC 6 Music proved the band were entirely right. Given the strength of the source material it was only right to issue a remixes album on the project and there was no shortage of producers lining up to get involved.

Dance luminaries including Ray Mang, Ashley Beedle, Steve Cobby and Fouk all signed on immediately. So it, made sense to put together their fine interpretations on a disco house focused vinyl. This 4-track ep also includes the outstanding acid house rework of the band's album favorite 'E.P.' by newcomers Rayka.

Potatohead People - Mellow Fantasy

On their third full-length release, Potatohead People widen the frame of their progressive musical vision and deliver a far-reaching yet approachable set of moods and grooves.

Mellow Fantasy continues to showcase the trademark instrumental prowess of the duo and their ease with the loose but hard-hitting drum style brought to the fore by Jay Dee's influential productions, but goes well beyond basic boom bap bread and butter, with singer-centered R&B and uptempo bumps sharing the stage.

Beginning in 2008 as a Vancouver-based hip-hop production team, Potatohead People (Nick Wisdom and AstroLogical) have collaborated with a fantasy league of MCs, including Frank Nitt of Frank'n'Dank (the 2013 breakout jam "Back To My Shit"), Illa J (producing an entire album for J. Dilla's younger brother) and the late Phife Dawg (the beloved A Tribe Called Quest co-founder's last recorded verse was over one of their beats).

Setting them apart from other Dilla-influenced beatmakers is the way they push the scope of the style, working the corners with their own unique touch. At its most basic, "the goal has always been making really dope loops," they explain. By using slices of their own rough instrumental ideas, finding "a chord progression or texture that you can hear again and again and never question it," they've taken this fundamental concept and elevated it to new levels of melodic, harmonically complex music.

A jazz-like responsiveness to the input of collaborators is a key component of how the team works. "We like to get the artist involved when the beat is an early idea, and build the beat around the vocals, getting inspired by what they do."

On Mellow Fantasy, they had some impressive inspiration. Pos from De La Soul immediately connected with "Baby Got Work," a sophisticated slap that went through several iterations before settling into its ultimate form. Appropriately, the song's diligent construction echoes the ethic of the grind in the clear-eyed, precisely dovetailed lyrics fans have come to expect from the Daisy Age don. "Baby Got Work" is the album's lead single, hitting on 9/25/20.

Befitting Potatohead People's origins as a hip-hop group, cameos from Illa J and Slum Village's T3 on the summertime teaser "What It Feels Like" and Vancouver veteran Moka Only (the sassy, vanity take-down "Ungodly") add to the unimpeachable rap bonafides.

The hometown connections continue with Lotusland local Kapok slinging verses on a couple tracks and rising stars Kendra Dias and Clear Mortifee, who stake serious claims as names to watch with standout vocal turns on the low-slung neo-soul "Break Even" and the upcoming second single "Hidden Levels," a high-flying house/future boogie hybrid. Following up their successful 2019 collabo "Single Life," Bunnie makes her return to action with the group on "Kettle Boiling." Ranging further, Reggie B, who broke on the scene with his lead on Onra's "High Hopes," shines on the optimistic bounce of "Bring The World A Little Closer."

Threaded throughout are interlude instrumentals that comfortably manage the neat trick of being musically intriguing while retaining an accessible, gut-level thump. Look no further than the statement-making, Yussef Kamaal-like funk fusion album opener "1st Light" and their nod to overlooked Vancity synth pioneer Dale Jacobs ("Ode To Mr. Jacobs") for clues to where Nick and Astro's hearts are at.

Mellow Fantasy, released 10/30/20 on Bastard Jazz and available on vinyl and all digital platforms, is Potatohead People's most evolved collection yet, rooted in earthy low end but elevated, expansive and reaching new musical heights.

Sam Irl & Dusty - Twelve Inch Jams 004

Sometimes you produce a track with nothing but a dancefloor and a good sound system in mind. "Twelve Inch Jams" is offering you just that - strictly two A side tunes for the floor cut at 45 revolutions per minute. Jazz & Milk pays tribute to this classy release format with their new 12" vinyl series. Each record comes in a hand silk-screened printed and stamped sleeve!

The dreamteam of the highly successful first installment (JAMS001) teamed up again to share their love for raw and sample-based house music tunes produced on the MPC. Label artist Sam Irl and the man behind Jazz & Milk, Dusty never fail when it comes to layering colorful sample fragments and enriching them with raw beats and deep synthesizer chords.

"Broken Spell" starts off with a super moody atmosphere that slowly opens up until it reaches its energetic peak with bright synth stabs and a smooth bassline before colorful arpeggios are drifting the track into other spheres. "Love Prelude" has a rather dreamy vibe but its deep chord progressions and rough bass drums and claps create a truly unique contrast and a hypnotic atmosphere on top of it, while a later incoming bouncy bassline and dubby sample parts eventually pull you in cosmic dimensions!

First Time Out

30.07.2018

After some years rather of cosmic and ragaesque music, we slowly began to explore some more experimental and noisy sonic expression. At the time, we only owned a few instruments and sound effects and, no drummer. We use to play long tracks in order to follow the trend of the alternative music of the period (please, remember, we are in 1975). The event was a total spectacle with an inventive light-show including a stroboscope and a frantic projection of strange abstract slides on a giant screen by Freddy Pourcel. Some incense was burnt time to time.
A 42 minute live set across across both lp sides. Recorded and mixed in March 1975.

Furtherset returns to -OUS with his album 'To Live Tenderly Anew', following his EPs 'To Alter and Affect' and 'Drawings of Desire and Hate'. He notes: "I think of my previous two EPs for -OUS and this album as a trilogy, where this album is the final chapter". Furtherset is in search of hidden connections beyond harmonies and rhythm. Melodies are repeated until they reach their breaking point. Moments of relief are drowned out in densely packed sound. Intensity is maximized to the nth degree, creating a crest point that threatens to overwhelm pre-existing traces of activity completely.

The opening track 'To Live Tenderly Anew' begins with a fragile melody, only to erupt into pulsating synthesizer figures that continuously expand, before pulverizing into sharp, noise-flecked fragments, and finally dissolving into an ambient pad. Midway-through 'The Logic of a Secret', the music finally sparks into Furtherset's signature arpeggio patterns, sprinting over a powerful bassline. The album finally climaxes with 'Choirs of Deception and Truth', a beatless rave hymn, before it, too, dissolves into deep space. Using only synthesizers, Furtherset creates metamorphic music, drawing on ambient, modern classical and rave, and building on his individual approach to composition, where long fades and periodic cuts continuously transform the scene.

The album's title references Amelia Rosselli's 1956 poem 'Diario in tre lingue', in which the experimental writer - who was born in exile in Paris, moved to the UK after the murder of her anti-fascist activist father, was educated in the US and finally settled in Rome - charts relations between the Italian, the French & the English. This poem laid the groundwork for her singular trilingual poetry, a body of work engaged in the research of tradition, and how tradition is passed on in disjointed manifestations.

First track 'Legitimacy' is a wonderful warm electronic song with club appeal by Cornwall based producer Zoe Leonard aka Simmerdown. Already featured on BBC's Hot List with her new project, Simmerdown melts influences of Hip-Hop, club culture and sampling to her very own unmistakeable sound.

Black Soyls are coming with 'Deep Shit Pt.3' an electronic club warmer paying homage to the vienna school of the 90s. Soothing chords and a plucking bassline beautifully paired with some jazz break style drums.

ITO who hails from Munich has already set the bar high with his debut release. Working out very complex rhythm structures over beautiful melodies in his flawless production style, his 'Citylights' is a love declaration to the downbeat genre par excellence.

'Mirrorsides' by David Hanke works with a heavy chopped main sample and brings some deeper feeling with it's milky sounding chords and it's mysterious sounding subtle synth melodies.

Effortlessly flitting between outright dancefloor boogie and meditative mellow moments it's a record that captivates the listener from start to finish, blending the timeless appeal of disco and electro with the best in indie dance and electronica.

Metro Riders - Europe By Night

Europe By Night is the gripping and intoxicating debut album by Stockholm, Sweden based Metro Riders (real name Henrik Stelzer) and the first release on newly minted contemporary global imprint Possible Motive. Employing outdated software and now obsolete analogue recording equipment, Metro Riders conjures a suspenseful and gloomy, true to the era re-imagining of lost sounds. A real labor of love, Europe By Night encompasses a very niche palette, everything from the prophetic visions of John Carpenter, to the warbled world of Troma films, to Italian horror flicks, Euro-crime and the cybernetic sewers of The Skaters.

The Eye Of Time - MYTH II : A Need to Survive

The Eye of Time is the solo-project of French musician, Marc Euvrie. His new album 'Myth II : Need To Survive' is the second part of a trilogy of releases about the path that humanity takes over the ages. A multi-layered tapestry of experimental sound, 'Myth II : Need To Survive' merges darkness and hope via minimalist beats and stark bass.

Myth is a word with ambiguous meanings in the dictionary, but all these lead to the same conclusion. We could decide to see things on the bright side, or to a have a more dramatical (in the literal sense) look on it. Like if one species is looking at another, and in a different era. Myth is a feedback to the tragical events of our time, to what people have to endure nowadays in order to survive, as well as the refugees travels, and the resistance against capitalism that is growing all over the world. Myth is also a particular way to see things, to take sides with history. When we talk about ancient political activists and revolutionaries, resistances to the established order, we make the choice to transform it into a myth, a history full of heroes. But the past is the present. And our present will be the past again. It is on us to take action in order to avoid our inevitable end.

On 'Myth II : Need To Survive', Marc adds, 'The period between the release of the first two records of this trilogy is a most significant one in my life. 'A Need To Survive' is the perfect title to name it. I have fought darkness. I have faced myself. I've been into the deepest introspection ever, but I'm on my way to recover, and I will never be the same again. I guess I have faced the worst but most important period that everybody will face in his life. To know yourself better, to see the bad and the good things you're capable of.'

He goes on to say, 'I feel that the album trilogy I started in 2016 will match my path to become a better person in balance. 'Myth I : A Last Dance For The Things We Love' corresponds to my falling into darkness, 'A Need To Survive' to finding the energy to rise again and the last record which will be named 'To Heal', corresponds to me right now, feeling positively mature.'

Euvrie's musical development is deeply connected with the French DIY punk and hardcore scene, although he has been classically trained. He started to play piano at 9 years old, composed his first pieces at 15 and studied cello at a Conservatoire after finishing school. Euvrie played in several bands before, being inuenced by Claude Debussy, Philip Glass, Frederic Chopin, J.S. Bach, Michael Nyman just as Godspeed You Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Zion and Portishead, he began to translate his personal reection of our complex world into music, which initiated The Eye of Time.

His extensive self-titled debut album was released in spring 2012 and exposed a dark look on the present, past and future. His last albums were promising a glimpse of hope ('Acoustic') or pitch-black despair ('Anti'). 'Myth I : A Last Dance For The Things We Love', released in 2016, dealt with introspection, impregnated with minimalistic moments, where piano and cello write the story of loneliness and calm, accompanied by both grim and hopeful melodies.

The cover artworks of the 'Myth' album trilogy display pictures by Emin Özmen, a winner of the world press photo award. His work is focused on the situation in Kurdistan, Syria, Turkey and the "refugees". His work has been published by Time magazine, The New York Times, BBC, Guardian, among others.

Ultramarine - Blackwaterside

In August 2016 Ultramarine created a photo film featuring photographs from Ian Cooper's Survey East website which focuses on a particular stretch of the Blackwater Estuary in Essex.

The film (and accompanying soundtrack) was screened on rotation at the Caught By The River Thames festival at Fulham Palace in London.

For this original Blackwaterside audio/print project, Ultramarine created two new pieces of music inspired by their time working close to the estuary. Glasgow based printmaker/sculptor Bronwen Sleigh visited this remote corner of Essex to sketch and draw, using these visual references to create a lithograph, printed in three colours, which features on the cover of the book accompanying the 7" single.

The book features a series of Ian Cooper's original photographs, alongside poetry by the writer Philip Terry, inspired by the Essex coast, taken from his book Quennets.

- Originally released by publishing imprint Random Spectacular

- Re-released by Blackford Hill with obi strip

- 7" vinyl single

- 28-page booklet of photographs and poetry

- Wraparound cover by printmaker Bronwen Sleigh

- Digital download card (including an extra 16 minutes of bonus audio)

- Limited edition of 350 copies

- Played by Nick Luscombe on BBC Radio 3 'Late Junction'

- Played by Gideon Coe on BBC Radio 6

Various - CoOp Presents Plug One

CoOp Presents an all-new double-album compilation entitled 'Plug One'. It features a plethora of global talent from in & around the world of bruk and beyond - some already well-established in the field, some very much on the come-up and some brand new artists - this compilation is an acknowledgment of a continually evolving sound from the label formed by IG Culture & Alex Phountzi a few years ago. 'Plug One' affirms this electric movement, with a deeply fluid current running throughout, with tracks ranging from the cosmic psych jazz of LCSM, to the classic UKG tweaks of Groove Chronicles, to the thought-provoking vibes of Reginald Omas Mamaode IV, to a veritable who's who of 2020 bruk talent including Xtra Brux, Sivey, EVM128, Cengiz, Wonky Logic & many more.

From its beginnings as a classic club night and label in the early 2000's, CoOp always carried an undefinable and potent creative energy. A sense of freedom and uninhibited exploration was positioned at the core of CoOp's sprawling community and consciousness, communicated via movement and sound. From this seed and throughout the years that followed, this same energy permeated the worldwide underground music ecosystem. As CoOp's legacy continued to influence new generations of music makers far and wide. The syncopated rhythms, soulful keys and infectious grooves synonymous with the broken beat sound, now known simply as Bruk, became entwined with new concepts and progressions, leading to new movements carrying on the essence of the bruk energy.

IG Culture and Alex Phountzi took the helm of their CoOp Presents label in 2018, with the vision of championing these new waves of emerging artists, continuing the all-important exchange of energy at the heart of the original CoOp movement, but also giving room for the music to be pushed into new and uncharted territories. With burgeoning producers from around the globe being drawn to the explorative and expressive nature of the project, an incubator was created, providing a space and platform for these ideals to take on new shapes and sounds. Just as every generation must rewrite its own history books, CoOp Presents was born from a combination of influences, ideas and personalities, and in turn is now encouraging the next generation to do some re-writing of its own.

'Plug One' will be released on vinyl & digital on CoOp Presents in November 2020.

Stefan Ringer - FWM002

FWM Entertainment has kept that same energy in its second release by label head, Stefan Ringer. The A side track 'SO' is instantly exciting! The chorded turned arpeggiated melody and rhythm section take over your body and the song invokes different feelings and emotions as it progresses; this is a song you will definitely want to have for this summer and beyond. Over on the B side, 'Afrotine' brings a more tropical broken beat type of flavor. The percussive yet chromatic sound of the kalimba is almost hypnotizing. Sunshine, cool breezes, and smiles come to mind when hearing this one. The B2, 'Time' is a slowed down vocal groove that slaps! The melody floats effortlessly along the beat with the bass line following closely behind, complimenting the changes throughout. Overall this one is a keeper and a great follow-up to the acclaimed FWM001

Gitkin - Safe Passage

Safe Passage

12inchWONDERLP47
Wonderwheel
03.11.2020

Gitkin's music exists somewhere between primal, rootsy memory and distant exotic yearning — A dusty bordertown where the familiar blends imperceptibly into the enchantingly foreign.

After a long and fruitful run as a bandleader with relentlessly touring party-rockers Pimps Of Joytime and a Grammy-nominated country blues collaboration with Cedric Burnside, multi-instrumentalist Brian J set out to "explore tonalities I'd never messed with," as he puts it. It was a release from "having to write lyrics or involve my voice," he notes, and so the (mostly) instrumental sound of Gitkin came into being.

Reviews of Gitkin's first LP grappled with descriptors, tagging it vaguely as "cinematic" and comparing it favorably with Khruangbin. True, the music is largely wordless, emotionally evocative, and guitar driven. But it possesses an alluring alchemy all its own.

Gitkin's first release, 2018's well-received Five Star Motel, amply demonstrated his ease with earthy funk and comfortably-cut rhythm. On his new full-length release Safe Passage, the itinerant guitar slinger broadens his already rich palette with melodies informed by Greek and Middle Eastern modalities, Peruvian Chicha and Tuareg Saharan guitar styles. No gimmick, this juxtaposition of gut-bucket blues and funk low-end with unexpectedly twisting lead phrases highlights the intense flavors found in each savory ingredient.

Recorded at his home studio in New Orleans, Safe Passage showcases a new batch of immediately engaging, repeatedly satisfying cuts, ranging from surf exotica ("Cat Nip") to raunchy roadhouse stompers ("Fools Gold" and "The Drive") to dreamy vocal cuts "Foot Steps" and "Hold On" to the floating finale of "Safe Passage."

Gitkin's production radiates character and warmth, leaning on soft-focus vintage mics, dubby spring reverbs and the quirks of a tape console. Further enhancing the intimate vibe are guests like veteran Chauncey Yearwood (congas) and New Orleans local "Spug" Smith, who provides a sousaphone low-end on the cumbia-not-cumbia "Spug Life." Carol C lends her striking voice to three tracks, including the strutting single "De La."

Safe Passage will be released by Wonderwheel on September 18th, 2020 and will be available on vinyl, CD and digitally.

“His music defies predictable electronic pigeonholing” – VICE French-Canadian producer and live act Christophe Dubé, aka CRi, is a dance music star in the making. Following in the footsteps of fellow Montréalers Jacques Greene and Kaytranada, CRi has risen through the city’s bubbling scene in recent years and now reveals his debut album ‘Juvenile’. A self-taught college dropout, CRi caught the attention of tastemaker press with early single ‘Rush’ and his 'Someone Else' EP. 'Rush', accompanied by an award-nominated music video, and 'Someone Else' picked up a nomination for Electronic Release of The Year at the 2018 Juno Awards (Canada’s equivalent to The Grammy’s). “I’m just a pizza delivery guy that said fuck it…” CRi’s sound blurs light, dream-like melodies with textured production - capturing the energy of the dancefloor, and the nostalgia of the morning after. Christophe draws inspiration from his musical heroes Moby, St Germain and Daniel Bélanger (who appears on the album), along with more contemporary influences ranging from Caribou and Dark Sky to Jacques Greene and Actress.

Paradox of Choice

CassetteOOH022
OOH-sounds
13.11.2020

Calum Gunn's debut LP on OOH-sounds "Paradox of Choice" OOH-022 looks down into our obsession with choice and the (in)capacity to handle a large amount of information.

By intervening on different strands of work—mostly small experiments that were filling up his hard disks in considerable amount—Berlin based computer musician Calum Gunn experiments here with what psychologist Barry Schwartz coined as the 'Paradox of Choice' effect: the dramatic explosion in choice and information have become so increasingly extended, biased and complex—from the mundane to the profound—to paradoxically turn into a problem rather then a solution, and lead to greater anxiety, indecision and dissatisfaction.

Instead of the "blank slate" problem, Gunn's challenging take is quite the opposite: how to fit a large amount of pieces together to form a cohesive whole and keep many different combinations of sounds and textures in focus, avoiding decision-making paralysis. Whether it's algoritmic destruction (LOCUS, TWELVES), synthesis techniques (ASSUMPTION, WALL OF FULL-STACKS) or awkward electro rhythms and future-dark-ambient-dub-ish sounds (INVARIANT, OFFSHOOT, SOLVED PROBLES XII) Gunn manages to glue his big-data-archive via a 'sympathetic filter'. He works on common elements and physical properties of sounds, coagulating and enhancing unnatural timbres, weird architectures and different genres into an enthusing organic whole by playing with sound processing, effects, and his signature coding steroids—techno-angel's share for the 'big picture'

The Imbeciles - Decider Remixes

Mesmerising, ghostly, seductive, urgent, poignant, “Decider” is about the ultimate endgame: death. This track draws you into its web and holds you there. There’s no escape. Is there anything after ‘the end?’ If there is, will it bring happiness, or just more pain? And, are we to be judged by The Decider when we get there?

The inspiration, if you can call it that, for the song comes from the band’s own recent experiences. “We’ve lost a few people recently that we were close to. It does tend to make you ponder the universe, and whether you get a second act,” says Butch Dante, guitarist.

Filmed on location in the Texas panhandle, the video will be the second of a triptych of films written by Butch, focused on the band’s main preoccupation: the fact that the world is ending and people should be kinder to each other while it does.

Now they’ve been remixed. By these people:

Deetron
This Swiss maestro has one of the most characterful sounds in modern day techno. Taking a big inspiration from the big expansive, moody sounds of Detroit, Sam Geiser also borrows percussive influence from Chicago House whilst instilling his very own atmospheric personality, making for one hell of a ride.

Benedikt Frey
For our money, one of the most exciting exponents of leftfield house and disco there is. His music is always pushing boundaries, with a unique experimental spirit that has indie and punk deep in its heart.

Fort Romeau
Everything from widescreen, deep house, and warm, bubbly acid right through to raw, driving Italo and ethereal disco house; the Cin Cin boss is one of the most exciting and elegant exponents of today’s underground electronic scene.

Return Of Black September

2x12inchARCHIVEFIFTYONE
Staalplaat
30.04.2020

The excellent Black September, a continuous, five-part, 68-minute epic, is as formidably competent as ever, although more for the brooding, surreal nature of its soundworld than for its grooves, which here sound almost subsidiary. The soul samples and restlessly evolving minor-chord kaleidoscopes that unfold throughout the work is prima facie evidence of a musician on a roll. Boldly named after one of the most notorious Palestinian terrorist organizations, the group which carried out the Israeli Olympic athlete massacre in 1972, September matches it's dark black artwork and design with equally doom-laden music (mastered as one track, despite the five separate song titles listed on the back).

The title-track relies on a slightly more gentle ominousness, with soft string-plucking reverberating around the beat, but things start to pick up accordingly with the more aggressive, sharp-edged electronics shading into a tense blend of percussion and energy on "Libya"; after shading away into a more minimal midsection, the track returns at a nervous, quick pace, with drums and drum pads firing off echoes into the mix as drones snake in and out of the song. One particularly gripping section has shards of noise firing off in all directions before settling back into the frazzled energy of the central beat, feeling like a soundtrack to a particularly good chase scene in a movie. "Thuggee" and its accompanying remix keep the unsettled edge up, with sudden drum and electronic pulse intrusions erupting over the main flow of the songs. It's interesting to hear how Bryn Jones' love of dub applies itself in even more creative and different ways than from his productions of some years before, exchanging the slow pace for a fast one and applying Krautrock drone principles.

A nicely stretched-out, creepy remix of Gun Aramaic's "Opiate and Mullah" wraps up this fine effort. This vinyl includes the two Unused Return of Black September Tracks that were on the archive series volume thirty two cd. The two extra tracks, however, follow in taking a much more cleanly digital feel, with many of the elements Jones usually uses present but in more stripped down or even mechanized forms. The relatively clean pulse of these two longer compositions serve as a refreshing contrast.

San Fransisco meets NYC for the third release on Fifth Interval.

Rose Bay from Federsen sets the tone for the record: drenched in tape hiss, the warm pads and delays create a richly textured environment for deeper club sets or for 2am sessions on headphones.

Dub Techno luminary Brendon Moller offers up two versions of the title track to complete the EP - one in his own name and the second under his Ecologist guise. Fans of the label will no doubt be well aware of Moller's formidable discography, which includes 10 albums under a variety of aliases, exploring the outer reaches of dub music.

Coaxing two captivating versions from his studio in upstate New York, Moller focusses on the chord stabs from the original for the Echologist Dub, pushing the stabs and percussion through the desk, twisting the tails through tape delay and creating new vistas through crafty use of panning and bona fide dub production techniques.

Closing with the outstanding Tidal Dub, Moller dons his Beat Pharmacy cap and pushes the mammoth bassline to near speaker-crushing levels to create a deeply hypnotic groove that is accentuated by waves of ferric pads and fractured percussion.

Polo & Pan - Feel Good EP

French electro duo Polo & Pan today release their new single ‘Feel Good’, via Hamburger Records/Ekleroshock/Caroline International. The single is lifted from the band’s forthcoming new EP release, ‘Feel Good’, which is due for release on July 3, 2020. The EP is the hotly-anticipated follow up to Paul Armand-Delille and Alexandre Grynszpan’s wildly successful 2017 debut album ‘Caravelle’ - certified Gold in France and Platinum world-wide - alongside streaming figures in excess of 200 million and counting. A sold-out international tour saw the pair make their Coachella debut and sell out huge rooms including London’s Printworks. Today’s release follows close on the tail of Polo & Pan’s recent ‘Home Sweet Home’ mixtape, which has already clocked over half a million streams since release last month. ‘Feel Good’ is now available to stream across all platforms from here .

The globe-spinning adventures of Polo & Pan were sparked into life when producers Armand-Delille and Grynszpan met back in 2012 on the mirrored dance-floor of era-defining, hedonistic (and now sadly shuttered) Paris nightspot Le Baron, where both were at the time resident DJs. Assuming a new soubriquet morphing their previous DJ aliases Polocorp and Peter Pan into one, Polo & Pan embarked onto a turbo-charged path to success over the course of their three EPs and debut album issued to date.

Summoning the promise of summer with pitch-perfect French Touch instincts, the ‘Feel Good’ EP fizzes with the uncomplicated spirit of playfulness with which it was pieced together. The title track is Polo & Pan’s self-confessed “Celebration of optimism”, blowing in on a warm breeze of insouciance and lazy handclaps. A rare segue into English lyrics - alongside EP closer ‘Peter Pan' (following the near entirely Francophone ‘Caravelle’) - the single is informed by a love for the sounds coming out of America’s West Coast in the 70s, losing none of their Gallic charm in the process.

Artfully assimilating snippets of everything from bossa nova to Moroder-esque disco, crate-diggers Polo & Pan draw inspiration from bedfellows as unlikely as The Wizard of Oz and Italian Standards from the 1930, to the repertoire of French film composer Vladimir Cosma, 90s Disney classics and 70s Nepalese psych rock, all finessed with pitch-perfect French Touch instincts.

You suspect there’s worse you could do than follow the playful imperative that Polo & Pan’s latest release comes bearing, and simply ‘Feel Good’….

Flevans - It Just Goes / Who's Got Me RMXS

Multi-instrumentalist/producer extraordinaire - Flevans has been on fire the last few months. With more plays across the BBC 6Music and Radio 2 than you can count on all your limbs combined, his recent singles have proved to be a huge success on the air-waves.

Following up this early enthusiasm with the stellar LP 'Part Time Millionaire' in March, the album was received very warmly by critics and fans alike.

With source material this good it was time to have some fun and at the end of March we released the undeniably brilliant Art of Tones Remix of Who's Got Me – featuring the brilliant Laura Vane on vocals. Deep delicious disco. That's how we'd describe it but don't take our word for it, listen to Todd Edwards, Bill Brewster, Kraak & Smaak, Hector Romero and Francois Kevorkian – all of whom are supporting it. Or listen to Diplo, Mistajam, Annie Nightingale, and Gilles Peterson who have all supported his past releases on the wireless..

Well good as that was, the fun doesn't stop there as the next instalment of remix magic has disco man of the moment Ray Mang giving the special treatment to It Just Goes (feat. Sarah Scott). He's always been a legend but his re-work of the phenomenal handclap band was THE remix of 2018 for the disco cognoscenti and he has turned in some of his very best work here.

Yes - we like to listen to music online and have the convenience of an endless collection always available but for the masochists who like to break their backs lugging heavy boxes of vinyl round to gigs – don't worry – we got your back (broke) by putting both of these killer remixes on one extremely desirable 12"

Ltj Xperience - Beggar Groove

Luca LTJ Trevisi (LTJ Xperience) began his dj/producer career in the 80s. As resident dj in two of the most famous Italian clubs of the time, Kinky in Bologna and Cap Creus in Imola, he was one of the first Italian jocks to spin House and to re-propose those black music, jazz and latin-bossa classics from the 70s that at the end of the same decade would have given birth to the Acid Jazz and Rare Groove movements. His first single release in 1988, titled First Job, together with Kekkotronics, was also the first release ever on Bologna based Irma Records. It was featured in a lot of compilations of the time and entered several playlists, rapidly reaching cult status for many UK and US djs. During the early 90s LTJ delivered a couple of singles in a kind of pre-breakbeat
style: Dont Stop The Sax, released all over Europe, and Funky Superfly. He also produced US singer Tameka Starrs single Going In Circles, always for Irma Records, still a
classic in the downtempo/r&b field. In the second half of the nineties Luca began to produce acid jazz bands like Bossa Nostra, still today one of Irma Records main acts. Their
first album had Vicky Anderson as special guest and today is still considered one of the most important European acid jazz albums. In the following years he concentrated on developing his activity as collector and rare vinyl merchant, which gave him the chance to get in touch with djs from all over the World and to discover many forgotten gems from the past years. Thanks to this experience he was able to create two extremely successful rarities series on Irma Records: Groovy and Suono Libero. In the meanwhile LTJ started to dj outside Italy too, performing in important venues like the Blue Note and Jazz Café in London, Giant Step in New York and Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. In 1999 saw the release of his first solo album under the LTJ Xperience moniker. The album was produced with the collaboration of fellow Irma artist and producer Ohm Guru and had Taka Boom and Jackson Sloan among the guests. Two of the
main tracks on the album are brazil house classic Sombre Guitar and title track Moon Beat, which became a true hit of the Chill Out genre, featured in dozens of important compilations

Tashi Wada With Yoshi Wada & Friends - FRKWYS Vol. 14 - Nue

Composer Tashi Wada has performed for years with his father Yoshi Wada—artist, composer, and early member of the Fluxus movement. However, they have rarely appeared together in studio settings. Nue, the fourteenth entry in RVNG Intl.'s intergenerational FRKWYS series, finally brings Tashi and Yoshi, along with an eclectic group of close friends and extended family, together on tape.

Nue draws on aspects of Tashi's background for his widest vision to date—among them the minimalist bagpipe music of Yoshi, who co-composed three of the tracks, the psychoacoustic and perceptual explorations of his mentor, composer James Tenney, and reimagined forms of ancient and devotional music. The album, however, is not a tribute to the past or a recapitulation of familiar sounds. Instead, Nue is an intertwining of people and ideas as a means of growing, of looking inward to move outward, and of looking back to move forward.

To achieve this growth, Tashi assembled a core group of fellow travelers, including Yoshi, composer Julia Holter, producer Cole MGN, and percussionist Corey Fogel, to give life to this multifaceted suite. As an experience, Nue subtly navigates the interactions, intimacy and spaciousness of this group.

The album's title itself is a nod to Tashi's abiding interest in duality and the unknown: nue is a mythological Japanese chimera with the face of a monkey, the legs of a tiger, and a snake for a tail, a composite form, at once disturbing and otherworldly. But, as the composer points out, nue is also French for naked—stripped of complexity, bare and exposed, but also raw and essential.

From the doubling of tones—and the world of harmonic nuances such an action produces—to the rich interplay between individual musicians, all baring their own personalities and experiences through shared performance, Tashi's compositions allow space for these elements to join and grow. The multipartite creature that is an ensemble melds in the simplicity and purity of the music itself.

As explained by Tashi, each part was written with an individual in mind, not simply an instrument. And each individual performer makes their mark, from Holter's vocal performances on the cresting, oceanic 'Mutable Signs' and 'Ondine' with guest vocalists Simone Forti, Jessika Kenney and Laura Steenberge, to Fogel's resonant, precise percussion on 'Bottom of the Sky.' Producer Cole MGN, who has worked extensively with artists like Beck and Ariel Pink, helped to create a world of sound with minimal yet multi-dimensional materials. Like many of its influences, Nue uses deceivingly simple means to create complex, coherent worlds and narratives.

Tashi notes the influence of legendary Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector, whose work looked inward, investigating memory and emotion and dream, to understand the often overwhelming world outside the self. Like Lispector's classic novel Near to the Wild Heart, Nue cleaves these archetypal dualities—world/self, old/new, complex/simple—to create a work that allows them to coalesce into something singular.

As Tashi states in his liner notes: 'My desire was to create something both old and new sounding—ancient and futuristic—and ultimately something of its own world and other. Nue is a vision, an endless night of dreams, and a personal history of sorts, full of joys and demons.'
