Moonboots/coyote/various - Is It Balearic Recordings: The First 5 Years

23

A deserted Old Town. Clean stucco walls frame blue. Where sky meets ocean ain't so easy to tell. Sunlight jumps from wave to wave. The beat, a lazy pulse. Content to watch a while, take it all in. All this beauty. Clouds would catch the colours. A Mediterranean panorama. Millionaire's yachts and fisherman's launches. Anchored on Sapphire. A Disco train that runs on love. No sleep on a sleeper. Landscapes speed and change. We come in naked, and we go naked. Adventure lead me where thy will. From sands to a bandstand, and a fanfare for a childhood. A memory plays footie in the park. Big city lights rock on. Bowie's fame and fashion. Afro Balearic, Afro Cosmic. Hallucination engines. Tony Manero's tribal rites of new Saturday night. Drifting on Dub shores. The classically trained play a Blues. A Blues for a distance glimpsed in a rear view mirror, the impossible. A Blues for forward, always / only forward. '86 Amnesia. We were dancing to forget now we dance to remember. Disco me to ecstasy. '89 House nation. A second summer of it. Love and laughter in echo. Days in the trees. Reich. Rick asked if we wanted to go party. Electro spirituals, all dreaming of the biggest beach. Throwing stones, almost alone. Biting Tongues and Clock DVA. Industrial seduction. Sundown. Tuning up. A White Isle terrace, coming up. A breakbeat. Weatherall on the radio and Heavenly socials. A hard kiss. Black moon Motorik and sunset on a quiet harbour. NYC vibrations. Ginsberg's ghost. Russell's ghost. Standing in the light of a miracle. Liquid Liquid. Chk! Chk! Chk! Spoons full of leather and Peyote buttons. A canyon on fire. A Lovefingers lullaby to take you home. Pili Pili percussion and Smokeblech chords. The Unknown Cases. Ma simba belle. Hari Hari Hari. Whatever else your faith demands. Cast your eyes like summer skies. From Goa to Bangalore by taxi. The seed for Is It Balearic Was sown at Venus, in Nottingham, at the start of the 1990s. Venus was a club that formed an important part of the then "Balearic Network". A network that linked party-spirited souls throughout the UK, "legends" such as Back To Basics in the North with their likeminded counterparts at soirees such as Flying in the South. It was a time of "cultural exchange", coach trips and weekenders. Timm & Ampo, as residents at Venus, spent the '90s travelling up and down the country DJing at venues and events such as The Gardening Club, Stealth, Sabresonic, Ministry Of Sound, Club UK, and Voodoo. After over a decade of DJing together, the two friends formed Coyote in 2004, to produce music. Then in 2007, Is It Balearic Recordings was born, initially with the humble aim of making their own productions available to the public. Since then Timm & Ampo, and Is It Balearic have established a new Balearic Network, extending out from the UK to Portugal, Italy, Finland, Austria, Switzerland, Lithuania, Norway, Belgium, New York, Ibiza, and Japan. As artists and label owners they've handled releases and remixes from and for Tiago, Max Essa, Justin Robertson, Mudd, Mushrooms Project, Giulio DJ, Aihki, Rompante, Phil Mison, Pete Herbert, The Project Club, Pharao Black Magic, Rune Lindbaek, Aeroplane, Steve Proctor, Andrew Weatherall, Hardway Bros, Phoreski, Craig Bratley, Pacific Horizons, Time & Space Machine, Prins Thomas, The Backwoods, Last Waltz, Begin, Man Power, Charles Webster, Soft Rocks, Chris Coco, Connan Moccasin, International Feel, RVNG Intl., Tusk, and Claremont 56, and collaborated with Moonboots and Jason Boardman on Aficionado. After teaming up with Ene on the Journey EP and a Backwoods remix in 2010 it seemed like a perfect match to get together on the 5 year anniversary CD. Chida has always been a big supporter of Coyote and IIB having had them over to Tokyo a couple of times.

Trackwork
13.02.2014

TRACKWORK EP number 3 comes stampeding in with a hefty 6 pack that bucks harder than a bronco...

Lead track U LIKE IT has already caused a chat room meltdown with people scrambling to i-d it from Bill Brewster's Boiler room mix.

Elizabethan comes correct with a modular hardware synth line twisting into oblivion across it's 5mins...already a firm favourite with a man who knows his analogue tweeking : Mr Justin Robertson.

Side B kicks of with FEEL REEL a straight up slab of H.O.U.S.E. and a solid groover for the house dancers and deeper heads alike....

H STREET BOP is a hat doft to NYC's no.1 disco loop label Henry Street Records....

And then we're off to Detroit to round off side B with some Kevin Saunderson flavours on Syncopate and Elevate - with long term Leo Zero song writing partner Marcel Myrtil on vocal duties.

Supafrico - The Sound Of Funky Africa Vol.4

Number four in the highly acclaimed Supafrico series, this Afro-funk treat will not disappoint. A decidedly upbeat compilation, it kicks off with the dope 1980 afro-style disco corker, 'Musicland' from NYC-based one-hit-wonders Clymax. An energetic boogie drum beat, soaring synths and an incessantly funky bassline makes this an A-class lesson in Afro-hedonism. Next up 'I Feel Funky' from Harry Mosco has you hooked from the first deeply groovy bass lick. Featuring a captivatingly heady synth solo, this track, taken from the 1978 'Country Boy (Mr. Funkees)' LP, is a dancefloor must-have. Flip over for the flute driven afro-disco belter, Tirogo's 'Dancing Machine'. Joyous horns intersperse the chugging beats whilst the hot Afro vocals pay homage to the Jackson 5 classic of the same name. Finally, Bebe Manga's 'Lokognolo' gives you layer upon layer of slick slap guitar, big-ass phat basslines and acid-tinged synths with Bebe smothering the whole lot in a creamy vocal topping. An absolute killer Afro EP that will burn up your record bag and the dancefloor alike

Marcus Marr - The Music B/w Pleasure Moon

Marrying pre-Roland early '80s US dance music with his love of early '90s Andrew Weatherall remixes, his playful and intricate productions aim to surprise the listener. In a dance music world ever-more saturated by imagination-free releases,
Marr is taking a refreshing quality-over-quantity approach. A songwriter and multi-instrumentalist as well as a producer and engineer, his inspirations include David Bowie and Prince. A music obsessive all his life, his first encounters with dance music were the acid house records which augmented his vinyl collection of rock and soul, and attending all night parties under Brixton's St Matthews church. Traveling to the south of England to watch DJ Harvey play an lengthy set, and armed with a mixtape of left-field disco in his hand from his old friend and sparring partner, Felix Dickinson, he was opened up to the kind of journey a dj could construct.

Playing all of the EU and in the US- Marr aims to show the scope of his influences from house and disco, peppering his sets with new, unreleased grooves and his own personal edits of classic material.

notes from Marcus Marr:

re The Music :

Now i love machine music BUT... instead of using a sample - perhaps from a 1981 boogie record - I played all the parts to imitate an expensively-produced 1981 US Dance record. As the track evolved, the elements had to all be played by hand and then tightened in the computer just enough to start to sound like top-line session men from 1981. (I can play a bit but I'm just in total awe of those guys- I need a computer to help me to play intricate parts for 7 minutes non-stop!)

re Pleasure Moon :

That was after a heavy night, I was making my morning coffee- Still half asleep- I found i had no milk in the flat. So, bleary-eyed and hungover, I went to the local store. I got the melody on the way to the shop. The interlocking bassline and timbale percussion part came on the way back. By the time I sat down at the computer I had the whole song. I mapped it straight away. With the sounds I chose, I wanted to nod to early 90s Andy Weatherall production which I love.

The spoken-word part came about later on. After she'd sung my melody, I got the wonderful Helena Ward to impersonate the voice of Ornella Muti, who played Princess Aura in 1980 kitch-fest 'Flash Gordon'. She kidnaps Flash and takes him to her 'secret pleasure moon'.

Black Deer - The Last Tortuga Ep

AT LAST EMOTIONAL RESPONSE IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THE RELEASE OF A SPECIAL 6 TRACK EP FROM WILLIAM BURNETT'S BLACK DEER PROJECT. FIRST GIVEN TO THE LABEL AS THE PROJECT WAS BEING BORN, THE EP'S BREADTH AND RANGE ALLOWS A GREATER EXPERIMENTATION THAN PREVIOUSLY SEEN. With releases on a who's who list of labels that are pushing experimental, underground house and techno including L.I.E.S, Creme Organisation, Echovolt and Strange Life, William Burnett has been steadily putting out releases that have gained a lot of respect without having to shout too loud about it. So much so that as well as running his own stella WT Records label, William is now often cited as a producer's producer. Deep and full of dub aesthetics that encompasses a world of it's own, his music is not just driven by a need to keep the floor moving, but are also about taking your headspace somewhere else. Progressing things a stage further is the Black Deer project. Recently launched, but in gestation for some time, it's introspective slant, plus loose referencing to his upbringing in Texas, allows William more freedom for experimentation. The Last Tortuga is taken from the same sessions that yielded the Willie Burns The Overlord EP on Trilogy Tapes as well as Black Deer's Trail Of Tears EP on Rush Hour, this 6 track EP has been due on the label for sometime, but it's been worth the wait as his sound has developed and expanded in to ambient and drone pieces not seen before and highlight the inner realms of his (at times stand-up comic) mind in a new light that fits the label's aims.

Dj Raw Sugar - Love Sexy Ep

DJ Raw Sugar is a native of Berlin, but has done a 6 year stint in New Zealand and now resides in Perth. His productions are deep and raw house beats mixed with jazz, boogie, disco, funk and soul.
Over the years he has put out music via other people's labels like Gazeebo International, Midnight Riot and ISM, but is now taking matters into his own hands via Love Sexy Records - a label he has just started.
The debut release kicks off with a piece from the man himself! It's a sweet and sultry slice of disco. Inkswel, also Australian based, takes up remix duty taking the track in a more club-ready direction. Slow goodness all over!

Koko Edits #4 on Basic Fingers, yes it’s true.

Needing little introduction to any Basic Fingers fan Koko has made his way from splicing and dicing since the first release back in 2011.

'Family Affair' sounds like it's taken from the Norman Connors rework session Koko did a while back. This is a tasteful treatment of Deodato's 'Keep It In The Family'.

The balanced mix of additional percussion respects the original and the rearranged segments extend the dancefloor joy for almost 9 minutes.

'Love Aboard' is a smooth and seductive edit of The Love Unlimited Orchestra, as bright and warm as the summer sun

Philipp Gorbachev - Silver Album

Russian-born dance avant-guardiste Philipp Gorbachev is in self-
exile - from Moscow to Berlin - due to his political views and his
purpose to join Cómeme in 2011. This collective of musicians and artists, operating between Latin America and Europe, is known for a killer instinct in producing forward thinking dance music beyond any standards of contemporary music industry. Focusing on serving dance music audiences all around the globe, Philipp Gorbachev composes, produces and performs music in a way that resembles the heritage axe of Russian avant-garde and
Moscow's Conceptualist movement rather than following any current dance music tradition. Based on a unique performing and recording technique - created and tested together with his buddy Matias Aguayo in 'The District Union' studio in Berlin - 'Silver Album' is a well-collected music
piece consisting of nine live performed arrangements, crafted with insurgent Russian lyrics that are fable-like inventions, fairy tales that deal with spiritual vibes, using the sound of the Russian language in order to form a new alternative music.

Musicians like ex-Helmet-and-now-Battles drummer John Stanier, as well as co-producers and mixing engineers like Butthole Surfer's guitarist Paul Leary; Mexican Cómeme brother Daniel Maloso; or Non Standard Productions head honcho and Ostgut Ton artist Tobias Freund, have been welcomed by Philipp Gorbachev to take part in the production of the record.
The first single of the Silver Album, called - Arrest Me' is a dedication to the imprisoned people around the world, a journey starter towards freedom of spirit, pioneering in never before expressed sounds,
timing and space control.

If you need an easier punchline: it simply is 'The First Russian
Dance Album'!

Various - Fours A Crowd Ep

For its 2nd 4 track V/A EP Foto welcomes more new artists to the roster in the form of Andy Hart & Max Graef (AU), MermaidS (UK), and Riff Clichard (Outer Space). Label boss OOFT! also contributes a track on the A-Side, with the wallowing 'Jareth's Revenge' blending strings, samples, bass and more into a 110bpm roller. Next up the Aussie dudes Andy Hart & Max Graef craft a funking slow house jam in the shape of 'Dem Young Jabronis', all warm chords and bumping beats.

Over on the flip MermaidS show why they're some serious contenders for a big breakthrough this year - 'Run With The Night' shifts through the gears for 5 minutes before breaking into downright euphoric territory. Rounding things off the mysterious Riff Clichard takes some time out from polishing his Intergalactic Jensen Interceptor to chop up some 80s beats to give us 'Through With Love'

Shadow Kids - Night Sun

Hot on the heels of EDSC 003 comes the 4th release for the Manchester born & bred label/clubnight/meeting of minds and what an assault on the senses it truly is!

EDSC 004 comes from way across the Atlantic and is from Shadow Kids aka Mike Simonetti (Italians Do It Better) & synth wizard Secret Circuit…this release truly ticks all the boxes for those that love to go on an epic journey of the cosmic kind and what better way to accompany you on that trip than by having some remix action courtesy of Seahawks and Ruf Dug

Laughing At Jazz starts off proceedings with an infectious string arrangement that rides the wobbly baseline like a pro cosmic surfer before out of nowhere a Chicago tinged piano creeps into the mix to bring things back from space and onto the dance floor.

Ruf Dug turns in an excellent wobbly boogie tinged version with a re-recorded vocal by Ruffy himself that takes in disco elements whilst punchy piano chords keep it hooky.

Nightsun plays out like a theatrical play of different sections and is intriguing from the first beat (although it is over 2 mins before the 4/4 kicks in!) and continues to surprise throughout its 8 minute playing time…with psyched out melodies alongside snappy percussion and a “womp womp” bassline before entering a final stage that goes for an almost heads down vibe.

Seahawks do the seemingly impossible and crank up the psych meter to full throttle making Nightsun and even grander experience with a running time of just over 12 minutes! The listening equivalent of Lord Of The Rings, this is epic, beautiful & an absolutely stunning piece of work…

Alessandro Parisi / Adamennon - Il Plenilunio Del Fuoco

After releases on Lux Rec, MinimalRome, Giallo Disco and Sangoplasmo plus a string of live shows in Madrid, Paris, Rome and Switzerland, Alessandro Parisi has collaborated with Adamennon to present 'Il Plenilunio Del Fuoco'. Four tracks of mesmerising, cinemascopic, medieval-tinged music. Each track is a journey into the glorious past where warriors fought side by side with an unflinching loyalty.

'We were lured by the call of the Naught. We bring royal blood to purify the land with the consecration of ancient sages. In the name of the sacred all-glorious crusade, moved by psychokinetic power, we brutally kill as the heavenly dew falls on the battlefield.
We are the fire's moonlight warriors and this is our holy war'

Nick The Record Presents - Under The Influence Vol.4

Nick The Recordpresents

Under The Influence Vol.4

12inchZEDDLP032
Z Records
04.09.2014

Z Records tap Nick The Record for their fourth volume of the Under The Influence series.

Following on from the phenomenal success of the recent 'Italo House' and 'Remixed With Love' compilation plus more
Joey Negro compiled albums including 'GoGo Get Down', 'Backstreet Brit Funk', 'Destination Boogie' and the everpopular
Soul of Disco series Z Records continues to release high quality compilations filled with lesser known disco, funk and
boogie.
Now it's the return of the highly regarded Under The Influence series with Volume Four compiled by Nick The Record.
My whole life has revolved around records.
I was buying Hip Hop and House in the Eighties as it was released and I got
heavily into tracing the steps back through breaks and sample sources that were used in Hip Hop records. I also joined the
dots between Disco & modern club & House music & spread my music explorations from Rare Groove to rare Disco. There
were very few people interested in this vein of music history at the time & even fewer as obsessed as me so when the reemergence
of Disco exploded I was well ahead of the curve, not only in collecting but historical knowledge. The best thing
about record collecting is it never ends and after 35 years of buying, after 25 years of selling & playing records there is still old
stuff to discover & new releases to endeavour to keep up with.
So as something of an expert in all things Disco I get quite a few offers to release compilations but as a record obsessive my
natural hoarding mentality makes me cautious to give up the goods. As anyone who's been aware of my record selling
website www.djfriendy.co.uk over the last 10 years and my paper sales lists (now that's old school) for more than 10 years
preceding, I could easily put together a compilation of the rarest Disco & Boogie 12 inches, and there are, of course, some
of those included but I wanted to share more than that here.
I feel this 'Under The Influence' series offers the chance to put together a more personal comp, which reflects the many
different flavours of my taste & my collection & gives you a feel of my DJ style at the same time.

Joey Negro - Italo House (part 1 & 2)

Following on from the phenomenal success of the recent 'Remixed With Love' compilation plus more Joey Negro compiled albums including 'GoGo Get Down', 'Backstreet Brit Funk', 'Destination Boogie' and the ever-popular Soul of Disco series Z Records continues to release high quality compilations filled with lesser known disco, funk and boogie. Now it's the turn of 'Italo House' to get the JN selection treatment with over 20 tracks hand picked from the late 80's and early 90's covering a lot of the deeper classics and some lesser known releases from a golden era of Italian dance music. The late 80s were undoubtedly a golden era for dance music. A time which saw the birth of many genres and sub genres - from acid house to hardcore to Balearic - and of course Italo house. If you ask Jo Raver to name an Italo house track, they'd probably come back with Blackbox, Jinny, Fiddlefatti or one of many big piano tune. At the same time there was another equally distinctive sound coming out of Italy- a warmer, deeper, more emotional style which didn't yield any commercial hits. The sound was more jazzy and soulful with syncopated percussion, dreamy pads and, though piano was often used, it wasn't in the obviously programmed, big breakdown style which became a cliché of the Italo house genre. This more underground side of Italo was closer to the original American house sound- but still retained a very European flavour. In common with other Z compilations which have featured Britfunk and GoGo, this album was an important release for me. Important because I love a lot of the records, many of which have been largely forgotten about, but also because there
really was a unique sound coming out of Italy, spread across many labels and involving numerous producers. As a result, it has never really been fully showcased like this before. I'm glad this album exists for other people to discover or re-discover the deeper side of Italo house. Joey Negro - Feb 2014

Reggie Dokes - Child Of The Sun Ep

Kick starting the new year, Cinematic's latest release comes from label debutant Reggie Dokes in the form of 'Child of The Sun EP'. An inspired artist hailing from Detroit, Reggie spoils us with three funk fuelled cuts via the motor city!

An inspired artist through his association with Derrick May and Transmat, Reggie is one of the unsung heroes from Detroit who's sole purpose has always been to concentrate on the music. His Psychotasia record label has been an outlet for releasing his signature sound of soul inspired deep house and techno that has gained him plaudits all over Europe. Recent guest appearances have seen Reggie release on esteemed labels such as Royal Oak, Kuumba and We Play House.

The first track 'Child of the sun' is a slow Techno burner fuelled with funk and electronic rhythms that builds, envoking vibrancy and colour before the bassline sets the tone in pummelling throughout the track.

The second track aptly titled 'Funk Below' further signifies Reggies versatility this time with a deeper mindset giving us the feeling of intimate night spots that are smoke filled with llow ceilings. Think browns and deep reds when listening to this and funk below that radar.

Make Believe compliments the release thats a little leftfield but not to be ignored. Synth laden and downtempo, the hi hats whip away providing energy climaxing with clever arrangement of strings before the whole thing gets stripped down for a more heads down moment.

Food Pyramid - Knossos

Having made their Disco Capablancas debut back in 2012 with the excellent 12" Shoal, sprawling Minneapolis collective Food Pyramid return to Hugo Capablancas' label for an equally fine second release in the shape of Knosssos. Whilst this standard edition may not have quite the same level of collectability as the edition of 50 that feature hand painted artwork from Disco Capablancas compadre Andreas Golder, you can't fault the music. Food Pyramid are on top form with "Knossos" as layer upon layer of hypnotic synthesis spill out of the grooves and it's easy to see why label and artist plumped for Gavin Russom for remix duties. The DFA's White Wizard turns in a trademark remix that turns an already psychedelically potent track into a motorik techno beast of spell binding proportions.

The Fantasy - Secret Mixes And Fixes Vol 15

The Fantasy are 2 veteran Detroit DJ's making their fantasy versions of untouchable songs. Hand Stamped limited edition one time pressing.
The Fantasy presentsThe Fantasy Vol. 2

A 33 RPM
1 TURNED AROUND 6:03"I Can't Turn Around", Isaac Hayes, USA,1975
The song that started it all, way back in 1975. One of the many, but a main antecedent to the genre known as house. And here you can see: it is totally hypnotic and from another world, psychadelic soul has found its future groove. The story of Isaac is the tragic story of a genius who was so great that he had every song he made and all future royalties stolen from him in 1977.

2 NOM NOM NOM 6:06 "Yum Yum (Gimmie Some)", Fatback Band, USA, 1975
This version is like Hamilton Bohannon meets Entertainment era Gang of Four. The original is 103 BPM funk jam, transformed here into a fantasy disco version of a lost gem.

B 33 RPM
3 SERVANT OF THE SPIRITS 7:16 "Dr. Doo-Wah", Kongas, France, 1977
Voodoo from Kongas, members from Kikrokos and Cerrone. Has an extended freaky kalimba jam that transforms into a strange disco jam about a special kind of doctor, one that saves you when you die.

4 ROLLING THUNDER 6:28 "Hum Along and Dance", The Jackson 5ive, USA, 1973
Norman Whitfield and Barret strong compose a sort of cross between Gene Krupa's rolling "Sing Sing Sing" drums from the dawn of the Big Band era and meld it with psychadelic soul ala Sly and th Family Stone. This song features the most unlikely Michael Jackson vocals ever over these endlessly hypnotic drums performed by Hal Blaine of the Wrecking Crew. A classic B-Boy break also functions as a Gallery era crazy drum jam re-purposed for those truly adventurous people beyond calling themselves househeads.

Burnt Island Casuals - Linger Longer

Continuing their decade long partnership, The Revenge and Sub Club's Harri emerge from their Glasgow studio under their Burnt Island Casuals guise to present 'Linger Longer EP'

If you've visited Subculture; one of the finest internationally-renowned underground clubbing havens then you're likely already to have absorbed Harri's studious approach to production. Here the EP's crisp and drum programming works to prove an enthusiastic and endearing backdrop to some of the most flexible synth work to grace a 4/4 groove.

Fresh from completion of 6th Borough Project's sophomore album, The Revenge's sterling association with quality productions continues; expect reassuringly slow-mo dancefloor memories, as guest Esa Williams provides additional percussion and unified analogue power on Theme From Easy Aces and the heady, block laided Belshill Rendevouz.

Their production partnership goes on through Grouse House and Clown Prosecution Service; reproducing the house sounds of a elder era with painstaking, granular attention to detail and sneaky modernizing touches. The latest offering serves as a befitting prelude to The Revenge's production work for forthcoming and inaugural release on Sub Club's new label.

If any label can claim ownership of a sound, the pair have honed their obsession and honesty into four lengthy cuts nailing Roar Groove's thematic mission statement.

Jokers Of The Scene - End Scene

Composed in the confines of a Toronto studio, the expansive sound of End Scene is based on decades of VHS-addled film music, new wave jams, weirdo library records, acid house bangers, selected ambient works, and warehouse jackers. Crafted for modern listening from the analog echoes of cybernetic dreams, End Scene reflects a cohesive vision for the Jokers of the Scene's intensely eclectic sensibility. This is headphone music made to move bodies, at once familiar and confounding fresh.

From the ominous intro, 'Umbilical Chords,' through the slow house of 'Channels For Success' and the gritty sheen of "Industrial Blonde," this collection builds on the Jokers' strengths and successes. But the duo, comprised of Linus Booth and Chris Macintyre, defy expectation at every turn; moving from the cavernous percussion of 'Home Video Is Wherever I'm With You' to the widescreen ecstasy of 'Stoned In Death Valley' and the breakneck pace of 'Hunk Of Punk.' The ambient vibes of the Jokers' 2012 " Lovely Sort of Death" (originally released in two parts by Scion on limited 7' vinyl) close out the album as a digital-only bonus.

Looking to do more than simply get End Scene into stores, Booth and Macintyre recruited Adam Marshall's acclaimed New Kanada imprint and NYC's underground powerhouse Throne Of Blood to create a collaborative label, Throne Of Kanada, to help realize their full vision for End Scene. In addition to the LP, JOTS are releasing a special cassette-only set of 'bonus tracks' with LA's Mount Analog and are working with New York based musician and artist Sean Dack to create the album artwork as well as a series of short films to accompany each track. Keeping with the duo's notion of 'casting' a dream team to realize End Scene, mastering was done by the likeminded musical iconoclast James Savage, from Glasgow's inimitable Naum Gabo. Everything is immaculately crafted, right down to the titles - plays on words that show that even when they're doling out dark slabs of drone and heady techno, these are Jokers at heart.
