Bringin back the funk!

Tying together the first four releases on Greg Wilson's new label, the Super Weird Substance Box Set 01 features the array of talent currently surrounding the label; with Kermit Leveridge's past Black Grape notoriety, The Reverend Cleve Freckleton's gruff gravitas and the vocal forces of nature The Reynolds.
Acting as producer, Greg Wilson brought his son Ché in on guitar for a couple of tracks, whilst getting Peza to work on the programming and Derek Kaye to help with the mastering. Another four releases are expected later in the summer and the single EPs will fit in the box perfectly to complete the set.

Uncanny Valley and Permanent Vacation are joining forces for an Uncanny Vacation! There has always been a lively exchange between Dresden and Munich and both labels are known for releasing a wide variety of music so it was only natural to team up for a joint release.

The record starts off with Permanent Vacation-regular and UK-veteran DMX Krew and his 'Astro Logical' which is as sharp and crisp as Electro can go. The bass line strikes hard but he also squeezes some great melancholic synth lines out of his machines. After that, Uncanny Valley's Sandrow M finally gives access to the much in demand live version of 'Prayervan', a tune that everybody has been singing along during his live sets.

On the flipside, Jacob Korn (who already released on both labels) hands in 'Eieiei' which rises on a percussion-heavy drum basement to a discoid House stomper thanks to an irresistible sample straight from an obscure flea market find. Last but not least, Drvg Cvltvre from the Netherlands delivers a tropical House jam. 'See You Again' is riding on a funky Disco bass line and creates a warm and cosy atmosphere with a whole bag of sound ideas.
Alexander Dorn aka Credit 00 adds his graphical talents to the record's sleeve with a brilliant tribute to 1990s adventure video games.

This October, the compilation Disco Sympathy will be released on Versatile. It's author is Vidal Benjamin, an outstanding DJ / digger, considered by his pals as one of the most brilliant in his category. And that says a lot!

Here he makes us rediscover the sound that was so characteristic of a certain early eighties French scene: wacky, happy, dancing and at times even poetic. One begins to travel through an era during which the French producers were not afraid to tackle disco, American boogie, British and German synth wave, to present us their version: French, poppy and above all... fun!

As a prelude, before releasing the compilation, Versatile will come with limited 33 rpm and 45 rpm maxis, on which every track has undergone an editing treatment by mysterious French producers: Jean-Marc Misère (last sighted somewhere near London), DJ Ringardos (who, since his last Versatile release in 2008, chose Roman exile), ALT (already spotted on the Edits Du Golem and on the US label Black Disco), and of course Vidal Benjamin himself, accompanied by Gilbert Cohen - the boss.

On the 45 rpm you'll find no-one less than Jeff Lasson, of the Get a Room! duo, who came through with flying colors. And as a bonus beat: Misère on the B-side.

After spearheading a dub-soaked and twisted Disco revival in the early Nineties, U-Star quickly became a cult label, whose catalogue still manages to sound as fresh and dislocated as ever !They are kicking things off again with Shrinkwrap's incredible versions of the 1997 Idjut Boys and Laj track 'Karmakazi' from the Outhouse EP.Shrinkwrap serve up two recreations that have captured the spirit of the original and taken it far far away...

Adult Contemporary follow up that superlative entry from Lord Of The Isles in belated but worthy fashion, as Dany Dorado takes the helm for a double dose of well judged South American disco that's aimed at switching the mood from the horizontal to vertical and inclined to dance. This release marks the vinyl debut for the Chilean producer and what a debut it is, as the lead track "Crepusculo" gently rolls into life via a near infinite expanse of balearic sound. Just as you're senses lose focus amidst this inviting backdrop, an almighty arpeggio lead surfaces and heads skyward atop a strident disco kick. "Fuga" is less shy in its intentions, swiftly settling into a fluttering electronic disco arrangement akin to Lindstrom at his most Scandolearic which is again driven by drums which have real substance to them. A treasury of unreleased rare and hard to get mixes from the first generation of master tapes.

Sources is a brand new series which will examine the output of a number of extremely influential independent U.S. labels hroughout the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. In an age where corporate anonymity reigns supreme and music is being treated like aural
wallpaper, the Sources series will go back to a time when record labels really meant something via their A&R policies, their ground-breaking releases, their everyday modus-operandi and
their general philosophies. What made these operations unique How did they manage to compete with the major companies How did they protect their artist rosters What sort of people ran these operations and how did they manage to survive in the cut-throat music business Bill Brewster, co-founder of the influential DJ History website and forum and author of the
acclaimed Last Night A D.J. Saved My Life' will be compiling and writing the sleeve notes for the series. The first six releases will concentrate on 6 New York independent labels which have each been massively influential in the evolvement of Dance Music over the last 30+ years - Easy Street, Fresh, Sleeping Bag, Sam, Streetwise and P&P. Each 3 x CD package will be full of lovingly re-mastered original 12' mixes as selected by Bill. These will include many tracks which have never made it to CD before and you can be sure that a variety of 'secret weapons' will emerge from each of these packages! All notes and scans will be included in a 16 page colour booklet which fits beautifully within the 3CD superior digipack. The usual Harmless PR and Radio operation will support all Sources releases.
The fourth package in the Sources series covers one of the most loved New York independent record labels ever, the iconic Sam Records. Formed by industry veteran Sam Weiss in 1975, the label launched with a the killer atmospheric funk anthem Woman Of The Ghetto' by Doris Duke before heading into Disco territory with several hugely successful albums from John Davis & The Monster Orchestra before hitting big internationally with a brace of Disco smashes from Gary's Gang including their most successful single Keep On Dancing'. By the beginning of the 1980s Sam managed to deftly circumnavigate the Disco backlash and re-invent themselves as a bona-fide 80s Dance label immediately
scoring with Rhyze's Just How Sweet Is Your Love', Convertion's Let's Do It', Scandal's Just Let Me Dance', K.I.D.'s Don't Stop' and Mike & Brenda Sutton's We'll Make It' among others. This proved to be a fortuitous direction and by the end of 1982 Sam had scored high-profile successes with Vicky 'D''s This Beat Is Mine', Komiko's Feel Alright', The Evasion's Wikka Wrap', K.I.D.'s Hupendi Muziki Wangu! (You Don't Like My Music)' and the sumptuous Dreaming' by Greg Henderson. Sam's impressive dance hit tally continued into 1983 with further successes like Steve Shelto's pumping Don't Give Your Love Away' and Klassique's Somebody's Loving You' before the label wound down for much of the next decade. Over the ensuing 30+ years Sam's 70s and 80s releases have seldom been off DJs turntables whether via the Disco, Rare- Groove and Electro scenes or by the almost relentless re-edits that appear of Sam's main output throughout this period. Records Anthology' continues the run of comprehensive anthologies of the most important labels in the evolution of Dance music.

Fernando Pulichino is not only a producer and DJ but also a multi instrumentalist and singer songwriter.A
He started playing music at the age of 14 being the bass guitar his main instrument.

Fernando's extensive discography is testament to his numerous releases. Apart from releasing his own music as 'Fernando' he is also part of the duo 'Silver City' and the band '2020Soundsystem' along Ralph Lawson, Danny Ward (Moodymanc) and Julian Sanza (Silver City).

He has performed at clubs like Fabric, Watergate and Space, also at festivals like Sonar, Glastonbury, The Big Chill, Bestival, T in the Park and The Garden Festival to name a few.

Fernando's talents continue to blossom. You can find his releases and remixes on labels like 'Gomma', 'International Feel', '2020Vision', 'Leng', 'Internasjonal', 'Redux', 'Under the Shade', 'Nang', and 'Bearfunk' where early this year he released his debut album.

True Romance is proud to release a fantastic EP from one of House music's biggest new talents. Damon Palermo is from the Metro Detroit region and currently lives in Los Angeles. He has been making adventurous house and disco music under the moniker Magic Touch since August 2011. In a short time the producer/DJ has amassed an impressive following and several well-received releases, kicking off with the critically-lauded 100% Silk release 'I Can Feel The Heat,' which was a recommended release of the week at Boomkat and made the 20JazzFunkGreats Best of 2011 list. Magic Touch live sets mix the psychedelic ethos of San Francisco with the house movements of Chicago, Detroit and smatters the whole thing with a solid nod to the UK rave underground. In demand at festivals including Sonar, Unsound and CTM, as well as touring Japan, China, South Korea, Australia, Magic Touch is also traveling the world DJing at places like Berlin's legendary Panorama Bar, Lux Frágil, The Shelter Shanghai and Dommune in Tokyo. His Magic Touch - Nothing More EP is a deep bow to the golden era of House Music and shows his impressive talent as a producer. His sound is raw and kicking but very subtly arranged. His collaborators on this EP are the production duo Greeen Linez (Christopher Greenberg & Matt Lyne) and the fabulous singer Fatha Green (Justin Leon Johnson) from New York on 'Nothing More". 'Nothing More' includes additional mixing by Brian Foote.

The cat is out of the bag as two Greg Wilson summer festival exclusives are unleashed on the expertly curated and highly collectable A&R Edits DJ imprint.



It's label favourite Peza who is back at the editing block for this release, reworking 'Walking In Rhythm', the 1975 classic from The Blackbyrds, into a contemporary dancefloor scorcher.



Its instant familiarity is swelled by Peza's additional drums and percussion - his complementary instrumentation, played live over the original groove, updating this feel-good sensation.



'Pure Morning' was Peza's favourite Placebo track and so the required amount of reverence was paid when he sharpened the razor to bring it right up to date for 2014, and provide Greg with the opening track of his Glastonbury Trilogy this year.



A full, percussive rework accentuates its anthemic reach and a well measured dose of filters and effects nudge this new arrangement to completion.

File Under Disco have steadily been building a seriously strong back catalogue of 100% original disco music.

So far this has taken shape through digital EPs of original material by artists like Drop Out Orchestra and JKriv & The Disco Machine, plus a series of big hitting vinyl remix releases from acts like The Idjut Boys, Ron Basejam, Dicky Trisco, Pete Herbert and Duff Disco amongst others.

For this release the imprint have collated their biggest selling and most popular 'digital only' cuts from the last year by Drop Out Orchestra and JKriv & The Disco Machine, plus an exclusive and unreleased version of Drop Out Orchestra's The National Theatre by Pete Herbert & Dicky Trisco.

All tracks are tried and tested for the dancefloor, beautifully mastered and appear here on vinyl for the very first time.

Written in an outdoor studio overlooking the Mallorcan countryside, Baby Prince (Wolf + Lamb's Gadi Mizrahi) and Crew Love newcomer Navid Izadi portray a moment of sun drenched inspiration on "The Last Dance EP".
The stage is set in the blinding heat of the Mediterranean summer where the Crew Love posse set up camp at a finca in St. Joan, Mallorca. An open ended studio visit extended to PillowTalk yielded the extraordinary talent of their ever rambunctious hype man, Navid Izadi who hungrily devoured studio time with Wolf + Lamb's Gadi Mizrahi aka Baby Prince as the PillowTalk boys maxed and relaxed. Written in an outdoor studio overlooking the countryside and signed in a heartbeat to Soul Clap Records, here's how The Last Dance EP went down in their words:
Baby Prince: "...it was the weekend when we had invited the PillowTalk crew and Navid to join us in the sun for some pool basketball, ham and wild BBQ's."
Navid Izadi: "Basically I really wanted to go to Mallorca with the PT boys, as it was to be my first time really hangin with Gadi and Zev (Eisenberg) on a personal level since they picked up my Double Standard EP (Ain't Got The Time)."
BP: "I had heard of Navid and how talented he was from some friends and was really excited to work on music together."
NI: "The first day (after some obligatory poolside/ BBQ action), Gadi and I got to talking about what kind of stuff we were into at the moment, which was pretty in line with one abother. I know Jamie Principle came up, some other old school house stuff etc. fun stuff, rough stuff, not overproduced or over-thought, mostly black stuff etc.... so the next day we took that and just started working together with the patented Soul Clap Ableton (LIVE) time sync method."
BP: "The process was super smooth as soon as we sat down to write tracks and three days later we had three tracks fully written and tracked out."
NI: "The whole session went from about the time I woke up (around 1pm or 2pm) to about the time the sun went down, which I'd say was about four to five hours altogether. I think Sammy D was the only PillowTalk boy who wasn't sick/hungover/sleeping, and he hung out with us during the process, dropping his vocals when he saw fit (with no mic stand/pop screen, no less). It took a second to get him to not sing in his typically silky fashion and to get old school sleazy with it for "Last Song Of The Dance", but needless to say, he nailed it. Three tracks in one afternoon, with another day or two taken to track it all out and it was dunzo. The EP made itself!"
As if one mind-boggling new collaboration wasn't enough, the 'Last Dance EP' features a remix by fellow Crew Love members Tanner Ross and Deniz Kurtel who turn out an EFUNK meets hip-hop in outer space version of the title track.

The Eccentrics parties started some three years ago by Will and Mark, have been a monthly staple of the eclectic nightlife scene in Peckham since its' inception. The party has hosted many great guests over its' three years, such as Andi Hanley, Piers Softrocks, Toby Tobias, Phil Mison, Frank Tope, Bill Brewster and many more. This 12' is the culmination of Mark and Will saving their hard earned gig money so they can present the sound of Eccentrics to a wider audience. These edits were put together along with another local hero Sanky (a regular guest) whom has kindly provided the 'System' edit and the artwork for the jacket.

'System' is a sleazy European synth pop killer with a laissez- faire attitude apparent in those Simmonds drums and quirky analogue keys. Sanky and Mark have added very slight additional production to extend and deliver a great version of this soon to be classic.

'New York' takes us on a journey of weird magical melodious intrigue that wouldn't sound out of place at a Dominic Strauss Kahn European sex party.

'The Beginning' is a balearock groove that drops into an extended dubbed out island breakdown before coming up for air again.

'The End' is a downtempo slap bass funk rock head nodder that your university professor probably jumped around to in his teens.

The latest offering from Copenhagen's Music For Dreams is a superb 5-tracker of unreleased gems from A Vision of Panorama, who established himself last year with his amazing 'Time Capsule' EP. This new release from the talented Russian is full of delicious Balearic Double Fantasy/early 90ties Cafe Del Mar moods underpinned by modern programming all washed with a sense of warmth and richness and a relaxed island atmosphere. "Reef" is a downtempo luscious beachy groove oozing sunshine, "Port De Soller" offers a late 80ties vibe of tasty organic keys and steady bass while "Patches of Light" shimmers with multi layered keyboard harmonies and a superb melodic hook. Flip over and let the ocean waves roll on "Sail Among The Clouds" where melting electronics and catchy synths evoke memories of sundancing on the beach. And finally we have the magnificent Jex Opolis remix of 'Patches of Light' with the Canadian delivering a hot, summery and beautiful version that hits all the right notes - a future classic already being playlisted by Manchester's Moonboots and Test Pressing's Apiento. Did anybody say music for swimming pools, floating frogs and chilled seagulls....Yes!

On the A side is Magic Dance which is good, but it's the instrumental version of the track Pink Footpath that really gets the disco DJs drooling. I had just opened "Click Records", my record label in the center of Milan, a short walk from CBS. Was in the '80s and in my office there was a constant coming and going of artists; many young talents at the first experience, others already well under way and some who later became famous as Pino Mango and Eros Ramazzotti - with which I composed the song "A friend" who later won St. Vincent festival catapulting him to the Sanremo Festival.

One day he appeared to me a certain Luigi Fregapane (aka Louis) with a demo by himself produced in Turin. I listened to the track several times, and with a smile him know that I OK for that song sketched by hand.

The voice of Louis was amazing, and his dowry of guitarist eclectic and very personal was evident . I phoned Alberto Radius and booked a few days of studio to produce the track we later called "Magic Dance". Once the A side was done , I personally decided to work on a remix to which I gave the name "Pink Footphat" after being delighted observing an infinity of pink flowers covering like a carpet the street I was walking through in Milan.

2014 is the 10th anniversay of the San Francisco based producers 40 Thieves releasing their frst EP and now they come through with their debut album 'The Sky Is Yours' for
Leng Records.Core members Layne Fox, Corey Black & Jay Williams call on their bevy of friends to contribute to the group's diverse sonic smake up. Travis 'TK' Kirschbaum was a
co-founder and key contributor and local best buds Qzen, Alona, Rita Mazlan, Jason 'JP Soul' Peters, Chris MacGrew, Masahiko Kiritani, Dave Dick, Victor Critchfeld, Colin Klingman, Dave Kurzman and Larry Hamilton have all played various roles in past and current productions.
Over the years 40 Thieves have connected with likeminded labels including Rong Music and Permanent Vacation to release a small handful of original singles and EP's. One
in particular, 2008's 'Don't Turn It Off,' caused such a commotion it wound up on a few dozen CD compilations and was voted Best of the Decade by Beatport in 2010. Over the
next few years the Thieves had the chance to remix great artists including Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Gary 'Chocolate Star' Davis, Plastique De Reve, and Johnny Dynell.
Whether they're creating cosmic odyssey soundscapes or lazy mutant house, 40 Thieves like to interweave live instrumentation with programmed electronics, their sound would be equally at home at the Mudd Club circa 1983 or in the headphones of an Ibiza beachgoer circa 2083. Whether slack or upbeat, 40 Thieves always aim for the head as well as the foor.
The Sky Is Yours will be released on two separate gatefold double LP's each containing 10 tracks.Essential!
