Punkin Machine / Suzy Q - I Need You Tonight / Tonight (Record Store Day 2019)

Double header reissue heat from the Unidisc back catalogue! One of the most in demand titles from the cult Canadian labels repertoire - Punkin Machine's 'I Need You Tonight' was first heard in the clubs in 1981 and received anthemic status, finding new favour with DJ's in the early 2000's excavating the wide world of Disco (the track featured on DFA's legendary Fabric mix CD in 2007). Copies of this instantly recognisable disco bomb are very tough to come by and are now going for big money in the second hand market with 100's of wants, and for good reason! The track was later covered by Suzy Q, who's version entitled 'Tonight', is included here on the flip side in both the original vocal and dub / instrumental versions. Both tracks on this double header have been re mastered from the original tapes held in Unidisc's Montreal HQ for maximum sonic Discotheque playback! Essential and hot tracks for dancers and disc jocks alike!

Various - Dj Andy Smith Presents: Reach Up Disco Wonderland

Best known to most people for his early work as a Portishead collaborator and International tour DJ, Andy Smith earned his 'Legendary' title among crate diggers in 1998 when he released seminal mix album 'The Document'. In the years since, Andy has continued to live up to his reputation as one of the finest and most creative DJs on the planet, tirelessly digging in the crates and emerging with pure gold. Following in the footsteps of his 2006 exploration of Trojan's mighty reggae vaults and his two compilations exploring funk music from New Orleans and Jamaica, Andy turns his attention to disco and boogie for the very first time. The concept for 'Reach Up - Disco Wonderland' was born from 'Reach Up', a DJ collective founded by Andy in 2012 to reflect the spirit of legendary NYC clubs such as Paradise Garage and Studio 54. 'Reach Up' showcases 80s boogie, disco and proto house, the foundations upon which dance music culture was built. As you might expect, Andy Smith's selections for the album are not only delightfully obscure but highly memorable. Many titles will spark recognition, having been sampled for more contemporary hip hop and R&B tracks. Disco & Boogie this compilation may be, but it's been put together with a b-boy mentality. As Andy himself puts it At my 'Reach Up' and 'Boombox' nights a fair few of these will have been played, but interestingly some of these tracks might well get played at more 'hip hop orientated' nights i do too because of the disco breaks: tracks like T Connection' & Freedom. Containing a raft of undeniable dance-floor fillers and slept-on anthems, 'Reach Up - Disco Wonderland' also at times displays that indefinable, other-worldy, almost eerie sonic fingerprint that's been present in Andy's productions and DJ sets since day one. Above all, this album is testament to a youthful obsession with home taping. As Andy puts it: "just being able to officially put these tracks out that i used to play on my ghetto blaster in the streets is an amazing thing!"

15.01.2018

Absolutely stellar proto-disco jam from 1975 on the minute Shield label, Nassau County's Hokis Pokis may not be the most well known of funk / soul outfits but that doesn't mean they groove any less than any of the big guns!

Darius - Equilibrium (feat. Wayne Snow)

Three years after their last collaboration “Lost in the Moment”, part of Darius’ debut album Utopia, the French producer and Nigerian born future soul artist Wayne Snow unveil their stellar single “Equilibrium”.

The message of unity has never felt more relevant than the times we are living through right now. This project composed one year ago, serves as a stark reminder that we can all transcend above our differences and connect through the experience of music together, regardless of colour and race.

The undeniable synergy of both artists create a harmony magnified by the richness of their diverse cultures and musical background.

The beat instantly catches us in a warm and arresting atmosphere. The main melody reveals an uptempo rhythm gently interwoven in Wayne Snow’ emotive voice, born in Nigeria, living in Berlin in preparation for his next album. His lyrics infuse a carefree candor, which only suggests love and euphoria, fruit of an universal balance and a collective caring energy.

After multiple collaborations among “Helios” or the “Nightbirds” improvised live project (feat. FKJ and Crayon), the two artists reunite once again on “Equilibrium”. Heady and joyful, only few seconds are enough to form a timeless memory and make this track an instant classic. Darius holds Wayne’s powerful vocals, which travel through the composition as gospel pipe dreams. His Funk and Disco influences, embodied by his heart-warming and dynamic groove reminds us of his iconic project Romance (2014). Driven by a festive and upbeat energy, Darius finally renews himself with a return to his musical roots, whilst Wayne Snow steps up towards an audacious expression and a peek into his forthcoming artist album.

Lovers of pastel and retro aesthetics, we find the artist’s aesthetic language elevated through an impressive video treatment by the esteemed French director Alice Kong set for release on July 23rd. The audio release will precede a week earlier on July 16th, part of his forthcoming project.

Various - Kaputt.wav Vol. II: Reserva / Voz Terra

2020 saw the Bogota based club launch their eponymous imprint with a far reaching compilation, dropping tracks from a host of artists that perfectly represent the Kaputt sound as they further cement their position as a beacon of the Colombian underground. Now they are back with ten new and exclusive cuts which transcends the club and explores the human impact on the planet, and how nature came back to reclaim their land.

Born in quarantine when nature sounded much louder than usual, VozTerra a local non-profit organization invited people to listen to nature in 'Sounds from your window'. People in Colombia and around the world took the opportunity of the isolation to listen and record ths sounds of nature. The material, together with soundscapes previously recorded in the Van der Hammen Reserve and in the La Conejera Wetland, in Bogotá, were given to DJs from the electronic music scene to create musical pieces which are now part of the 'Reserva/Voz Terra' compilation.

The alliance of Kaputt.wav, VozTerra and the Museum for the United Nations - UN Live, is the compilation of unconventional actions that musicians and people from all over the world took to express their interest in caring for nature with the hope of inspiring people to take action to care for biodiversity and mitigate climate change.

Mr. K - Edits by Mr. K- I’m Here Again/ Girl You Need A Change Of Mind

A — A true top-five peak record at The Garage, this Thelma Houston burner from 1977 was “a highlight whenever Larry played it,” Danny Krivit recalls... “and he played it a lot!” Danny’s edit is a homage to Larry and Frankie Knuckles – in particular, a reel to reel edit that Frankie did back in the day and shared with Krivit. “Reels were problematic, & when I tried to get it again from him, unfortunately he had lost it too.” The song (a clear attempt by Motown to capitalize on the previous year’s monster hit “Don’t Leave Me This Way”). What sets “I’m Here Again” apart though, is the incredible second half, not surprisingly also the main focus of Mr. K’s edit, along with a new straight to the point intro. Over a vicious groove reminiscent of the Originals’ “Down To Love Town” breakdown (Michael Sutton wrote and produced both “Love Town” and “I’m Here Again”) Houston delivers soul-stirring ad libs as the band crackles with electricity behind her, the piano chasing a descending string riff so eagerly it almost trips over itself. Pure dancefloor peak energy!

B — This band was a departure from the usual Motown session guys, and was comprised of a group called the Young Senators from Washington, DC. Who later formed the nucleus of Chuck Brown and the Soul Searchers. Motown was finalizing its move from Detroit to Los Angeles, and this 1972 Eddie Kendricks session was among the last to be recorded at the famed “Snake Pit” aka Studio A in Detroit. According to Young Senators percussionist Jimi Dougans, “Girl” was recorded at three o’clock in the morning, which perhaps accounts for some of the heavy vibe and distinctly different sound than the typical Motown pop style the label was known for. In a time before 12-inch singles, this was one of those first "made for a club" proto-disco records that could hold its power and even shine on a big system. In fact, Larry Levan used it to test the sound at the Garage. When he got “Girl” sounding good, Danny says, “he knew the system was really pumping and anything else he played would sound good too.” The original album cut “was typical of a lot of records, where producers fade out right when the record is climaxing,” Danny says. “On a dance floor where people absolutely love the record... they’ll just look at the DJ like, ‘Why’d you fade it out?’” Taking matters into his own hands, Mr. K edit again aims at the climactic back half of the song, engineering a nearly 7-minute climatic dance floor filler.

JARC - Move On Up / U Make Me Hot

Round three of JARC’s audacious, aural onslaught comes in the for of a double header of incendiary cuts, reworking that disco sound with hypnotic grooves and beefed up low ends, best served at full blast.

First up, you’re hit with ‘Move On Up’, looped, echoed and powered out into the cosmos. Earworm synth and sax hooks meet choice vocal snippets and a pumping beat.

Flip it over for a salacious number, ‘U Make Me Hot’ drenched in horns, guitar struts, and all too enticing vocals, tied together with a boisterous bassline that will rumble the very ground you stand on.

Blair French - Faded By The Sun / Celebration Ritual

Following the highly supported Genes / Space Conductor 7”, Blair French sneaks in one more release before the forthcoming album, The Art Of Us (TAOU). This single holds two extended versions of peak hour songs. The A-side features “Faded By The Sun”, a cosmic afro beatdown driven by drums, with hints of boogie and frosted with guitar swells and stabs from Michael Jurczak, dripping with 3 AM Ron Hardy energy. The flip features “Celebration Ritual”, a deep Afro House vibe with a ray of jazz fusion. Drenched in marimba, hand drums, a tap dance solo from Stephanie Fica, and live bass from Peter Croce. Both tracks have been lighting up dance floors in dubplate form for the past year and are finally available as a limited 12” release. No fireworks, just a dust sleeve, cut loud to lacquer at 45 RPM, and pressed with pride at Archer on Detroit’s east side.

Dinosaur L / Hanson and Davis - Go Bang! (Danny Krivit Edit of Walter Gibbons Remix) / I'll Take You On (Danny Krivit Edit of Larry

A special double header of 2 very very dope Danny Krivit edits from then Sleeping Bag / Fresh Records vaults.

Dinosaur L's immense 'Go Bang' takes up the A-side, with Mr.K tweaking the classic Walter Gibbons version into new sonic realms. Thoroughly minimal and spaced out in all the best ways and with a tense build-up, 'Go Bang' winds and winds until it feels like it's going to break! A brilliant reworking of a stone-cold classic that brings a fresh style to the familiar. On side B we are treated to a killer downtempo drum machine laden boogie-rap jam, namely the stellar Larry Levan mix of Hanson & Davis' 'I'll Take You On' from '86. Some primetime Garage sounds right here. A deep soulful cut that kicks and slams in all the right places, and is of course, touched up the right way by Danny's deft editing. Essential business right here, for real music lovers and dancers alike!

Remastered, re-edited and re-presented to you for 2020, courtesy of Danny Krivit, Sleeping Bag / Fresh Records and Above Board distribution. 100% legit!

Ess O Ess / Saulrichards - Totem (Swamp/Hardway Brothers/Otologic mix)

After a false start or two, Ess O Ess have finally joined the Kinfolk stable with a thunderous release featuring Laura Lee of Khruangbin fame.

Totem is the name and four versions is the game.

Starting off, the original mix is a wailing guitar-heavy psyche rock out that sees Laura Lee's vocals carrying it across a peyote-filled landscape.

Saul's Swamp Crawl version sees the slow 'n' heavy rock elements kept in the mix but with added electronic flourishes. Head nodding is an optional extra.

The Hardway Brothers decided to tune in with the spirit of Johnny Jenkins and haul it through New Orleans via a pit stop at John Carpenter's desert holiday home.

Otologic bring up the rear with an altogether different take by donning their finest digi dub garb and take it as far away as they can from it's psyche out beginnings

Soft Rocks - Talking Jungle (Justin Vandervolgen Remix)

Following last years acclaimed Curse of Soft Rocks album, we're invited to revisit said masterpiece from an alternative entry — a robust compilation of remixes. Every track is re-contextualized so wildly that we're left with a beautifully oblique yet complimentary rendering. The personnel employed vary in style and technique drastically, but such is the ethos of Soft Rocks, and furthermore the ESP Institute. At the end of the day, we implore you to shut up and listen.

On this 12" (the first of 4 surrounding The Revenge of Soft Rocks remix album) we're treated with a serious disco belted version of Talking Jungle as reworked by JUSTIN VANDERVOLGEN (TBD, Gold Channel, DFA, etc, etc) and an insanely serene take on Obo by ESP favorite TIAGO (Sea Power & Change, Gala Drop, DFA, etc, etc)... good lord this is quite a piece of wax!

Passion Theatre - Strange Desire/Mannequin

In 2018, Sean Worsey, a successful lawyer in California, began to receive some rather surprising emails. These were not from prospective clients, or about current cases he was working on, but rather queries from record collectors. They wanted more details about a pair of obscure, largely forgotten records he’d made in the mid 1980s as part of a virtually unknown band called Passion Theatre. To say he was surprised is an understatement. “People from around the world were emailing, calling and messaging us about the music, particularly a track called ‘Vacation Day’,” he says. “Our records were rare and gaining in value, mainly because there were not many manufactured at the time. By 2019, several individuals in the music industry had emailed me about licensing tracks.”

We eventually agreed with Sean to include ‘Vacation Day’, on Charles Bals’ second compilation, Retour Au Club Meduse. Impressed with the quality of the compilation Sean approached us again to discuss whether we would be interested in reissuing both of his old EP’s in full, an idea he’d been considering for a few months already. We jumped at the idea of course and have spent the last few months putting the reissue project together. The original studio tapes were long gone but a friend of Sean’s had some mint vinyl copies which we had shipped over from California to use as the master source, restored and mastered superbly by Technology Works in London. The striking original artwork from the two EP’s has been faithfully reworked into a gatefold double vinyl LP by designer Asger Behncke Jacobsen and features extensive interview/sleeve notes by Matt Anniss.

In the words of Sean Worsey - “One of the nicest things about the renewed interest in our music is that we can now enjoy it for what it is – back then we were a bit too worried about succeeding.”

ITAL OSCILAZZIONI - DRAMMA GIOCOSO / VAUDEVILLE

During this difficult situation where we are forced to see beautiful theaters empty and quiet, the eclectic Ital Oscillazioni (Elvio Seta), best known for his bulky live instrumental performances, in the long wait for the release of his 2 first albums offers us a couple of unpublished tracks “obscure-italo” on vinyl, in which he clearly expresses his New Romantic nature.

These two releases blend the raw and pure sound of his vintage synths, with the surprising theatricality of the Opera represented here by Gioacchino Rossini’s “L’Equivoco Stravagante”.

A retrofuturistic Concept-italoDisco that, while we are sweaty and busy dancing it in a dirty nightclub, will transport us for a few moments to an elegant Italian theater of 1982, surrounded by heavy red velvet curtains.

Hans Nieswandt:
Between 1996 and 2000 (and in some cases beyond), Cologne project Whirlpool Productions produced a lot
of music, both as a group and as solo artists, at the legendary Can Studio in Weilerswist, a small town about
20 kilometres south of Cologne. Much of this music has been released, most notable the international
classic „From: Disco To:Disco“; but some of the music never saw the light of day. These two tracks I
produced myself at some point shortly after my first solo album „Lazer Muzik“ and I’m super glad to get a
chance to finally release them - because there is the important cause of helping to save the Paloma Bar, a
place where I played times and always loved it - an experience I dearly hope to repeat many times more.
And because I always liked those two tracks a lot, they just never found their proper platform, for whatever
reasons. As I think they are quite fitting to the sound of the Paloma, I’m more than happy to support this
unique place with this humble contribution. Written and produced by Hans Nieswandt around 20 years ago

LIFE AND DEATH

4 colour splatter on clear vinyl

Life And Death’s next album project finds label boss DJ Tennis work with Israeli duo Red Axes to express themselves with total freedom and explore the similarities and differences between their respective sounds. Entitled Redrago and due for release as a 2 x 12” on October 11th, the adventurous and subversive full length is preceded by one two track single release and will will also be taken on the road for a series of unique live shows.

DJ Tennis and the Red Axes duo were first introduced to each other by The Pachanga Boys at a festival in Corsica. “Their faces, their expressions and their attitude—gentle, smart, loving and funny—impressed me at first sight“ remembers Tennis. That was many years ago, and since then they have deepened their personal and musical connections, but “always by chance” says Tennis. Around a year ago, they were having a discussions and decided they should attempt to combine their “love of psy and mediterranean influences” and scheduled a week of recording sessions together.

After making at 9am and having a proper Israeli breakfast, the artists went to a studio on top of a decadent old shopping mall in the Centre of Tel Aviv. Each of them then set up in one corner of the studio with their own instrument (including Tennis’s Pearl Syncussion, a small modular setup, a Juno and bunch of guitar pedals, while Niv and Dori “used their usual weird cheap instruments including bass and guitars”) and they began playing, experimenting and jamming, recording everything they did then swapping stations and repeating the process. “It was a friendly and loving experience” say Red Axes, who add that they then took all the recordings into various editing sessions and finalised the adventurous, multi-genre exploration that is Redrago.

“The aim was to find a kind of Italian-Israeli connection in our musical approach, “ explain Red Axes. “So the album journeys from psychedelic Italo disco to Israeli trance rock with a lot of rave elements. We call it falafel disco mixed with a 1/4 of spaghetti sauce.”

The album opens with the freaky synths and punchy drums of ‘Rave ’N Roll’, which has layers of exotic instrumentation and beguiling sound design. ‘Redrago’ is a Balearic track with expansive pads and sun kissed melodies washing over you like breaking waves, while ‘Il Veliero’ is a complexly woven tapestry of intoxicating leads and drunken tabla drum sounds with a psyched-out vibe.

The soft rock licks and conversational synths of ‘The Kohlrabi Session’ make for a chugging disco groover while ‘Plastelina’ is a deep and late night cosmic exploration that continues through the star gazing ambiance and long legged drums of ‘Shalom Alanation.’ Acid squiggles and tropical vocals make ‘Ventilo’ another fantastically fresh track while ‘Phantom Rag’ closes out with a flurry of wild synth patterns, techno drums and intergalactic feels that round things out in intense fashion.

This is a freeform album that knows no musical boundaries and will appeal to lovers of everything from kosmische to ambient, techno to Balearic.

Various - MESSAGE IN OUR MUSIC VOL.2

SOL DISCOS is extremely happy to introduce the second volume of their Message In Our Music compilation series, selected by WAXIST. This album is the result of more than two years of work in researching the original recordings, the artists involved & licensing the different songs. Focusing once again on the Modern-Soul genre, the album brings back to light eight extremely rare songs from the mid-70's to the mid-80's, all officially licensed. From the heavy synth Gospel Boogie of Sharnell Morton's "You Are My Shining Star", to
the magnificent Network & Co private Disco "Spirit Of The Boogie", most of these songs are highly difficult to find on their original format, not to mention at a decent price. Direct Connect Shun’s "He's No Good" records have been destroyed in a flood, and the few
copies which have sold on the Internet reach the 3 figures price tags for example. Also, the album is proud to introduce to a wider audience some lesser known but exceptional recordings such as Janice "Nikki" Harrison's "Magic of Love", which is taken from a Broadway musical produced & composed by Ted Wortham - who also composed for
Philadelphia International Recordings artists such as Teddy Pendergrass, Anthony White or Jean Carn. Message In Our Music Vol.2 has been fully remastered, and features interview based liner
notes, along with never seen before pictures of the artists selected

In an ocean of edits, Cardiology releases always stand out for the combination of refreshing source material and producers that can balance new approaches with a respectful touch. So it goes on release number seven from Alexny, which kicks things off in fine style with the shimmying shake of "Keep Your Body Movin'". "Ele Atirou A Flecha" is the kind of vibe you want to keep in your back pocket for the jubilant last track of the night, while "Paradise" is a sweet slice of island boogie to transport you and all listeners to your chosen idyll in an instant. "Weekend Feeling" brings a little ruff n' tuff house stomp to classic disco funk, getting the groove down heavy on the one and making party magic in the process.

Dam Swindle feat. Jitwam - Coffee in the morning EP

Detroit Swindle follow up last year’s soulful highlight ‘The life behind things’ with some impeccable disco-funk on steroids: the Coffee in the Morning EP featuring Jitwam. The ep features 2 originals, a dub mix and a stunning extended remix by Norwegian disco don Prins Thomas.
For Coffee in the morning, Detroit Swindle team up with India-via-London-to-NYC vocalist Jitwam, whose recent album Honeycomb on Tartelet and his live collaboration with Kamaal Williams have shown the world just how talented he really is.
Coffee in the morning is more than anything a funk fueled disco bomb. The energy is set by a rolling bassline with a live touch (thanks to Xander Vrienten) and percussion courtesy of their go-to-percussion-guy: Mauskovic Dance Band member Chris Bruining. The track bursts into action once Jitwam’s vocals come in. His purple colored vocals push through with a full-on slapback delay, which adds nicely to the vintage vibe of the track.
The lyrics are fun in a tongue-in-cheek kind of way and deal with life’s more pressing matters like all the things you can have alongside your
coffee. You could argue that this track is not really about coffee, but something far more perverse, but that’s up to you decide. Back on topic: The track takes a sharp jazzy turn once the saxophone is introduced (played by UK bred, Amsterdam based jazz dude Finn Peters), which moves nicely between catchy riffs and completely berserk jazz-isms. Its the full on original that works best for us, but if you’re not really into coffee –or vocals for that matter- there’s a more straightforward dub mix as well that steers away from all the breakfast related insinuations.
The a-side also holds the second collaboration, which moves into NY garage territory. Shuffling 909 percussion, live shakers and snares set the vibe along with Jitwam’s vocals directing you to ‘Move out the way!’. The track is bumping, the bassline is thumping and the crowd could very well be … (yes, it rhymes). The energy pitches up a notch once the synth hits come in and it flows up and down nicely into a section where strings,
Rhodes and cowbells take over into the breakdown. That’s where you get a moment to catch your breath, just before the full track comes back into action again. If it weren’t for Corona, we’d see this funky house tune played at beach parties, rooftops, intimate clubs and house-head-gatherings across the world for sure.
On the B-side, its Prins Thomas who takes you on a 10 minute long Scandi-disco trip with live drums and Thomas himself funkin’ on the bass. He makes perfect use of the dreamy elements of Coffee in the morning, making his version an intimate and provocative dubby disco burner. If the energy of the original is too much, this version might just be perfect for you.
This is a special piece of music for us that we’ve worked on for a long time and we’re really happy to finally share it with you. Let’s hope we all get a chance to play the music out loud to more people than just your neighbors and your cat.
Yours Sincerely,
Lars & Maarten
