Koichi Sakai - Wono EP

Koichi Sakai

Wono EP

12inchOR004
Olindo Records
30.04.2019

For our 7th release, we present our first 12” EP featuring music by London based producer and DJ Koichi Sakai, a well-known head in London music circles thanks to his role in co-founding the legendary Afrobeat Vibration nights alongside Dele Sosimi. In collaboration with Ghanaian percussionist and singer Afla Sackey (Afrik Bawantu), this project sees Koichi mixing African percussion instruments and themes with synths and drum machines.

The A Side features the dancefloor workout ‘Jingo’, a fresh take on Babatunde Olatunji’s original featuring vocals and percussion by Afla Sackey and guitar by Mao Yamada, with Koichi on synths and drum machine.

On the B Side, ‘Wono’, the title track from Koichi’s debut LP, gets the remix treatment by Osunlade (Yoruba Soul) who takes Afla’s lead vocals and a few percussion elements and turns it into a stripped-down, hypnotic dancefloor monster. On B2, Venezuela producer Pocz aka Carlos Mayoral creates a funked up, latinized version of the original featuring a brand new bassline and jazzy synths.

This Vinyl and digital EP comes as a lead up to Koichi’s first LP, ‘Wono’, to be released towards the end of 2019, It comes housed in our 12” company sleeve designed by Ese in Mexico and is mastered by Frank Merritt at The Carvery.

Quantic - Atlantic Oscillations

Out 26th April, "Atlantic Oscillations" marks the return of world-renowned British producer Quantic ahead of the release of his most cohesive and intricate album to date. Bringing together new players and concepts with a dance orientated sound that has enchanted fans and tastemakers across the world for nearly two decades.

As the first Quantic release under his main solo moniker since 2014's critically acclaimed 'Magnetica', "Atlantic Oscillations" embodies a disco vibrancy taken directly from sweaty dance nights in Brooklyn's small disco and dance clubs, "I've had the chance to see some great DJs and got into the disco edit and some incredible dance songs. NYC summers are great for outdoor parties and I wanted to make something which was long and had a real journey for these kind of parties", Holland explains "it was primarily my wish to make a bad disco tune". The finished product is a track shimmering with the warmth of a New York City summer and the energy of a party equipped with a well-stocked free bar.

RICARDO EDDY MARTINEZ - expreso ritmico LP
  • 01: Expreso Ritmico
  • 02: Mi Conga Es La Que Es
  • 03: Tambo Iya
  • 04: Yeya Son
  • 05: De Mis Razones
  • 01: La 132
  • 02: Este Tumbao
  • 03: Mas No Me Falta Fe
  • 04: Que La Tristeza Se Fue
  • 05: Te Quedas

Next up in our Cuban Classics series, one of the jewels of record label Areito’s extensive and sought-after catalogue. Ricardo Eddy Martinez’s Expreso Ritmico from 1978 is a prized album fusing funk, disco, and orchestrated influences with Afro-Cuban percussion, Latin breaks, and lush vocal harmonies.

Whilst maintaining its distinctive Cuban identity, Expreso Ritmico is one of the more American / Western-influenced Cuban titles of the time drawing inspiration from jazz funk, disco, and library music. The album was directed, written, and orchestrated by keyboardist and drummer Ricardo Eddy Martinez, who was also the mastermind behind the orchestration of the Los Reyes 73 album (that was recently reissued by Mr Bongo). Martinez would later go on to work with international musicians and singers such as Gloria Estefan, José Feliciano, Chick Corea, and many more, whilst also working as a sound engineer in the US.

Produced by Adolfo Pichardo, who worked on much of Areito’s output, Expreso Ritmico is packed with gold. The opening title track carries a loose, breezy Latin-disco-funk vibe that breaks into a brilliant Afro-Cuban workout. ‘Que La Tristeza Se Fue’ was expertly sampled and looped by Jazzanova on their 2008 song ‘Look What You Are Doing To Me, featuring Phonte from the hip hop group Little Brother. Elsewhere, ‘Tambo Iya’ has an Afro-funk, Soul Makossa-esque groove, while tracks such as ‘Te Quedas’, ‘Mi Conga Es La Que Es’ and ‘La 132’ run with a heavy pulsating Latin-funk sound. Head to the sultry psych funk of ‘Este Tumbao’ for a spacey journey that blends and morphs through genres.

RITMO DEL BARRIO - Por Que No Me Quieres / Por Que Eres Mujer

Limited edition, only 300 copies made, red cardboard sleeve.

It also includes a secret insert!

feat. Los Shapis

Formed in the city of Huancayo on February 14, 1981, Los Shapis – whose name was inspired by a traditional dance, “Los Shapis de Chupaca” – were hailed as ambassadors of chicha when they toured throughout different countries, giving birth to the internationalization of Peruvian cumbia in the early 1980s.

By 1983, the band was based out of Lima. Its members composed iconic songs about the provincial and profound identity of Peru, in a time marked by racism and classism from the most privileged sectors. A rhythmic tradition that would accompany the two most conflictive phenomena of the era: terrorism and economic debacle, reasons that motivated the massive migration from the countryside to the city.

This release is part of a serie of four 7" singles in collaboration with "Discos Horoscopo", a cornerstone label of peruvian music!

The backing band was formed by Brazil top musicians led by Luis Carlos Vinhas, Tenorio Jr. and Menescal himself. This is the first solo album recorded by Wanda Sá who shortly after would join Sergio Mendes' Brasil 65. Highly in demand, this fantastic album, one of the earliest arranging assignments by Eumir Deodato, is now reissued on vinyl again after over a decade unavailable. Info: Beautiful vocal bossa jazz album that includes songs written by Edu Lobo, Vinicius De Moraes, Roberto Menescal and Marcos Valle among others. The backing band was formed by Brazil top musicians led by Luis Carlos Vinhas, Tenorio Jr. and Menescal himself. This is the first solo album recorded by Wanda Sá who shortly after would join Sergio Mendes' Brasil 65 (with Rosinha de Valença and Jorge Ben). After touring the States (and recording), she returned to Brazil and did many shows with Baden Powell, Vinicius de Moraes, Luis Carlos Vinhas and Bossa 3. Despite having a very short discography, Wanda Sá is one of Brazil's best-kept musical secrets. She started to play the guitar at a very young age under guidance by Roberto Menescal, and although her fantastic voice and playing have remained under the radar for the mainstream audience, her outstanding talent is well known and appreciated by those in the know...
