There are West Coast classics, and then there is Music To Driveby, the third LP from the group that birthed MC Eiht: Compton's Most Wanted. Although the group started in the late '80s with multiple MCs (includeing Tha Chill and Boom Bam), by 1992 Eiht was pulling the group's vocal weight - supported by DJ Mike T on turntables and production - and even producing and co-producing tracks. Music To Driveby might lack beats-per-minute variety, but to fans that's not a bad thing. Across the board, this is mid-tempo, super deep, funky hip-hop, made for cars creeping along boulevards across the West and South, and it's about as good as it gets for such purposes. Just about filler-free, the album struts intensely and with purpose, as Eiht throws tales of Cali street life at fans for an hour straight, almost without a break. This solo marathon is given a respite only once, with Scarface's guest spot on 'N 2 Deep,' an excellent hood roller supported by a soulful guitar lick sampled from Lyn Collins' 'Do Your Thing.' Elsewhere, Eiht rolls alone and intensely, on cuts like the classic smash single 'Hood Took Me Under'; the album's second single and Tim Dog attack 'Who's Fu**ing Who'; the hometown big-up 'Compton 4 Life'; and hustle tales like 'Jack Mode' and 'I Gots To Get Over.' After this album, Eiht released more classics under his own name, and with similar fan worship. It was the continuation of a legendary career and Music To Driveby still ranks high on anyone's 'West Coast Legends' playlist.

Blackman's Foundation is one of the great roots albums of the classic reggae era. Hugh Mundell, who was tragically murdered at the age of 21, was one of the most talented young roots reggae artists on the Jamaican scene.
A protégé of dub legend Augustus Pablo, Hugh recorded the legendary roots-classic album "Africa Must Be Free (By 1983)" at the age of 16. Blackman's Foundation, is one of only three Hugh Mundell albums ever released. As such it is a precious artifact of Mundell's prodigious talent as it features Mundell's keening, hypnotic declamatory vocals over deep, powerful reggae riddims. Highlights of Blackman's Foundation include the hit single "Can't Pop No Style," the extended 12' version of the title track featuring Jah Bull and the classic single "Stop Them Jah."

KMD (Kausing Much Damage, or a positive Kause in a Much Damaged society) was a Hip Hop group in the early 90s perhaps best known for launching the career of acclaimed MC/Producer MF Doom (known during his KMD tenure as Zev Love X). After guesting on 3rd Bass' "The Gas Face," the trio (Zev, brother Subroc, and Onyx) released the acclaimed and overlooked "Mr. Hood" full-length. Their political outlook was similar to the group Brand Nubian, who guested on Hood; however, the style was more comical and included a great deal of clips from old children's recordings, mostly notably a sample of the Seaseme Street character Bert on the single "Who Me" This is the official Elektra Records/Traffic Entertainment Group re-release with original artwork and track listing in it's entirety. Cutting edge, ahead of it's time production and skits from KMD and Stimulated Dummies (John Gamble and Mr. Dante Ross). Features the singles "Peachfuzz", "Who Me" and "Nitty Gritty" (feat. Brand Nubian). This is one Rap album that is not to be missed.

Liturgy transcends the traditional parameters of what constitutes a rock band. Founded by Ravenna Hunt-Hendrix, Liturgy is a part of a shared discipline of composition, art, and philosophy that thrives on exploring the spaces between. Liturgy"s signature use of rhythmic complexity and repetition are exponentially amplified to maximalist proportions on 93696. Along with guitarist Mario Miron, bassist Tia Vincent-Clark, and drummer Leo Didkovsky, Hunt-Hendrix utilizes Liturgy"s past ruminations on burst beats and circuitous phrases as colors to paint rich murals that overwhelm and invigorate the senses. 93696 is the purest synthesis of the diversity of Liturgy, a sprawling and monumental double album exploring religion, cosmic love, the feminine, and metamorphosis while manifesting the ecstatic with breathtaking grandeur. Liturgy is the project of Ravenna Hunt-Hendrix, whose yearning, energetic "transcendental black metal" exists in the space between metal, art music and sacred ritual. Its current lineup features Mario Miron (guitar), Tia Vincent-Clark (bass) and Leo Didkovsky (drums).
