Mark Ernestus - Mbueguel Dafa Nekh

A stunning new production by the Rhythm And Sound ace, drawn from his recording sessions with some of Senegal’s greatest musicians — a griot clan of Sabar drummers from Kaolack in Senegal, led by Bakane Seck, with guest players and vocalists, including many mainstays of the bands of Baaba Maal, Youssou N’Dour and company.
Jeri-Jeri’s style of Mbalax is swingeingly masterful — heady and hard-grooving, with highly complex, fiercely succinct poly-rhythms — an ancient-futuristic music, mesmeric but sharp as nails, super-charged with drama. Featuring the lovelorn vocals of guest Mbene Diatta Seck, Sabar traditions are fused with furious Afro-Cubanismo, hard funk-rock, and shards of high-life.

Ernestus’ nasty, hypnotic, stripped dub — an Mbalax first — edges in the bass, profiles the talmbat and tungun drums, and scoops the semantics out of the singing.

Disbelief - The Ground Collapses

Since their inception in 1990, german band DISBELIEF drew an immediate roaring response from the press with a series of remarquable demo tapes leading to getting signed and touring extensively with bands like BOLT THROWER, SIX FEET UNDER, DEATH ANGEL among others and playing major festivals. Being on hiatus since 2010 after some line up changes, DISBELIEF came back on the battlefield more armed than ever with a much acclaimed album : "The Symbol Of Death" ( via Listenable records ) . It showcased a band with an implacable conviction and determination . During their 30 year existence, DISBELIEF have been exploring the depths of sonic depravity, and while injecting their own equitable sense of groove and harmony, they definitely have been embodying what gruesome old school heavy death metal is about . In September 2019, DISBELIEF entered Rambado studios in Essen ( Germany ) with producer Cornelius Rambadt and recorded their 11th album . It was then mastered by Dennis Köhne who also handled their previous album outrageously authoritative powerful sound . Entitled "The Ground Collapses", it Truly is a high standard relentless Monster of a record by all accounts. DISBELIEF is a genuine individual grinding force and "The Ground Collapses" is the ultimate soundtrack to the apocalypse ! For fans of : BOLT THROWER, OBITUARY, GOJIRA DISCOGRAPHY : Disbelief ‎( 1997 ) Infected ( 1998 ) Worst Enemy ( 2001 ) Shine ( 2002 ) Spreading The Rage ( 2003 ) 66Sick ( 2005 ) Navigator ( 2007 ) Protected Hell ( 2009 ) Heal! Witchery - Restless & Dead (Reissue & Bonus 2020)

Witchery were born in 1997 after Jensen, Rimfält and Axe had left Satanic Slaughter. One year later they released „Restless And Dead“, the title hinting at metal icons Accept and their classic „Restless And Wild“ album. The second release was the EP „Witchburner“(1999), once more they paid homage to their idols. They covered songs by WASP, Judas Priest, Accept, Black Sabbath and added three tracks of their own. The same year they launched „Dead, Hot And Ready“, naturally tens of thousands of fans banged their heads at Wacken Open Air ´99 to their Heavy-meets-Thrash-mix. One year later the Metal-allstars toured with Kreator and Moonspell.

„Symphony For The Devil“(2001) was their next opus, once again they combined precision, force and melody. As far as the style of music is concerned, Witchery go for the classic bands, the choice of their guests speaks volumes. The fivesome mixes elements from Death-, Black- and Heavy Metal. „We want to get people to drink beer and party without sounding like AC/DC“, Jensen points out. In their lyrics subsequently creatures show up, which are known from 80s horror movies. Death and the devil are as important as werewolves, witchhunters and hellhounds. Jensen sums it up: „We play party music without singing about whiskey and women.“ Now almost twenty years after their first release it´s time to re-introduce the classic Heavy-Metal pieces “Restless & Dead”, “Witchburner”, “Dead, Hot And Ready” and Symphony For The Devil” with remastered sound as well as reworked artworks and rare photos.

The mixing of genres is something that Dödsrit creator and sole member, Christoffer Öster has always done and done extremely well. As the main songwriter and driving force for Sweden's crust punk, d-beat, screamo, atmospheric, sludge, etc. cult group, Totem Skin, Öster received a vast amount of critical praise through journalists and peers alike. Dödsrit doesn't necessarily take on as many styles, maybe limiting it to black metal, crust, d-beat and post metal, though as evident on Spirit Crusher, Öster's second album as Dödsrit, he's found the perfect balance to meld and create a staggering opus.

Ensemble Economique - Radiate Through You
  • 1: Music Is Life
  • 2: I See You (Three Crosses), Part 1
  • 3: I See You (Three Crosses), Part 2
  • 4: Breathing Your Secret Language
  • 5: Blue Hour

The latest long-player of devotional noir by Humboldt County romantic Brian Pyle aka Ensemble Economique was originally titled Music Saves Lives, in response to the misguided backlash directed at underground artists in the wake of the tragic Ghost Ship fire in Oakland. Since Pyle's career threads through a decade and a half of Northern California's independent experimental music community, the blow struck a uniquely deep and personal chord. As a way to process, he began recording at his coastal home studio in Manila, California, channeling inner states of mind, seeking something 'more personal and intimate, the idea of love, and shining through.'

Radiate Through You delivers on its title, exuding a nuanced catharsis, alternately tempestuous and transcendent, forlorn but undefeated. Vaulted heavens of interwoven electronics ebb into hushed dirges of skeletal percussion and candlelit guitar. Roiling noise seethes, swells, and subsides as an ashen string arrangement rises in the mix, keening a somber, circular elegy, as if overtaken by memory on a long walk alone.

Two key guest appearances lend the album even more dynamism and drama: the first by Barcelona synthesist Alexander Molero on the questing, celestial opener, 'Music Is Life,' the second by New Zealand psychic sisters Purple Pilgrims on the devastating finale, 'Blue Hour.' Both showcase impressive shades of Pyle's finesse as producer and muse, sparking his collaborators to new heights. Whether taken as expressionist memorial, therapeutic song cycle, or something more ambiguous, Radiate Through You stands as a pensive, passionate statement by an enduring light of the West Coast canon, drawn from 'a deep, special place of giant emotions, feelings.'

There is something about this music that masterfully captures so much of what attracted so many of us to heavy metal early on and has continued fueling our addiction he fantasy and the ferocity, the wild energy of a pure adrenaline rush, the guitar virtuosity, the head-moving rhythms, the heroic melodies and combines all that with the terrifying intensity of black metal shrieking pushed to the limit.

Rotten Hill Gang - Teach Peace

Its Rap and Roll, 2nd Generation.(1st generation was Run DMC, Beastie Boys,LL Cool J).A mash up of styles all under one album..

Trying to explain the immoral wrongs of the world within the world we come from... Re educating our selfs and saying what we believe in our songs.. Hence 'Teach Peace'. Education, housing, healthcare, food banks, racism, corporate greed, tax evasion, climate change, child abuse and religion all need to be addressed properly.

Not swept under the carpet to be covered up by the next scandal.. We need moral leaders who are strong and willing to die for they're beliefs.. Not selling their people down the river to the highest bidder!!... We all need to be speaking our minds about whats going on... Peace is the only way for everyone... Peace can be just as prosperous as war.. Even for the corporations..there's nothing wrong with making money. It's what you do with it that counts..

It just takes a little bit of time and thought. But greed leads to the inequality of more than 80% of our world.. We need to help people become aware of this.. It's not where we're from, it's where we're at!

You can't understand Kendrick Lamar's career unless you understand "Overly Dedicated."

Friday Night Lights was the soundtrack that blew from the speakers a chill that mirrored the icy wind of my Atlanta winter—the weather matched the subdued yet sanguine mood that the music teetered on. J. Cole picked the perfect time to emerge from the sidelines when he decided that November would be the month of his release.

He was still considered a new artist, one that beamed with potential, Friday Night Lights solidified why he was given Jay Z's co-sign. To my surprise, he didn't wait to reach the position of a mogul before giving out his own co-sign. In an interview that took place near the end of 2010, when asked about his favorite album of the year, I was ready for him to crown Kanye's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, maybe Eminem's Recovery, or even Drake's Thank Me Later. He didn't name any of them. The person he named wasn't on the radio, wasn't big on blogs, I don't think he had a major record deal. It was the first time that I heard of Kendrick Lamar and his album Overly Dedicated.

When the album was finally in my eager possession, play was pressed with excitement, I wanted to hear the rapper that even J. Cole publicly adored. The first thing I realized was how much his voice was affecting the experience, youthful and scratchy with a touch of rasp, puberty never arrived to gift him a more mature tone. Imagine my disappointment, after a few songs I was back to playing Friday Night Lights trying to forget what I just heard. It wasn't the most pleasant first impression but before being fed to my recycle bin I wanted to give him a second listen. I can't explain what was different, but this time around the music hit me like an audio punch to the eardrums. 'The Heart PT 2,' the album's introduction, knocked me off my feet; the way his calm slowly became a calamity, the buildup of emotions was like a volcano going from dormant to eruption. The same scratchy, raspy voice was cloaked in relentless passion. The intense breathless flow that brings the song to a close left me wondering if he was human, questioning how I overlooked such obvious talent, my ears were opened, I was finally hearing what impressed J. Cole and what would eventually impress the world.

It's been five years since the release of Overly Dedicated, looking back, this album foreshadowed the artist he would grow to be. Look at it as the demo tape that's necessary to secure the label deal except it was released on iTunes and not passed around by A&Rs. While the Kendrick Lamar EP introduced the good kid, it was OD that displayed the more refined, polished rapper. He was far from the days of sounding like an off brand Lil Wayne, Kendrick found his voice and the confidence that it takes to make others believe in your vision.

Vision is one thing that Kendrick has, there are a lot of themes that appear on this album that became recurring throughout his career. One is alcohol, the song 'P&P 1.5' is an early version of 'Swimming Pools,' one that highlights two vices that he dives into. It's guaranteed to resonate with those who are going through something in life and are leaning on vices to be the umbrella in the storm; escapism at its finest. I also love that the song starts with a Martin skit before it was common knowledge that the '90s sitcom is his favorite series. The song "H.O.C" establish that Kendrick doesn't smoke despite always being around it, it's not until GKMC that we understand why. The album is full of glimpses into the Kendrick that we would later get to know in depth.

Another huge perspective is how he frames the city of Compton. We really get a partial view of a city where uncles are jailed, boys are fatherless, jobs aren't kept, the innocent aren't safe, relationships are turbulent, and money is the motivation that can drive the most upstanding citizen to the edge of despair. Even Kendrick, our protagonist, isn't above being tainted by d'evils, if his right on time conscience was a second late, he would be behind bars instead of rapping them. A lot of these nameless characters that inhabit his city who are trapped behind the barbed wire return as homies, enemies, lovers, and lessons that haunt and help him.

Kendrick makes being an average Joe relatable on all fronts, even if you never stepped foot into his hood, it's easy to imagine yourself in his shoes. OD captures all the angst and frustrations of the growing pains that come with chasing a dream in a tunnel with little light. Religion is another heavy topic he continues to explore. Before speaking with Jesus and Lucifer on TPAB, we see how Kendrick imagined 'Heaven & Hell' on the finale track. Sadly his voice fades out before he completes his view of Heaven. Notice that in the background of the cover are the faces of incredible artists who were immensely dedicated to their craft but died tragic deaths. It's also worth noting that the Dash Snow snippet that plays at the beginning of 'The Heart Pt 2' is extremely eerie when you realize that he died of a drug overdose. When you think about songs like 'Sing About Me' and 'U,' mortality and legacy are thoughts that he's constantly exploring in his music.

Overly Dedicated broke the barrier that separated Kendrick from the people and also his peers. J. Cole becoming a fan is what lead the two to become collaborators, and eventually brought us 'HiiPower.' More important than his relationship with Cole, without Overly Dedicated, Dr. Dre doesn't discover 'Ignorance Is Bliss' on YouTube. That's probably one of the most pivotal moments in Kendrick's career. Not only did Overly Dedicated establish who Kendrick Lamar is, it also allowed the world to see the other artists, producers, and affiliates that were building the foundation for TDE's dynasty.

This is back in 2010, ScHoolboy Q was just transitioning from hype man to rap artist. His verse on 'Michael Jordan' did wonders in helping him break out as his own star. Ab-Soul was already becoming a name in the underground, his strong closing verse on "P&P 1.5" likely sent people searching for more. Those that did were treated with the mixtape Longterm 2: Lifestyles Of The Broke & Almost Famousthat came out early that same year, one of his best bodies of work I must say.

Jhené Aiko and BJ The Chicago Kid were practically unknown at the time, two songbirds that were trying to build a nest in the music industry, their stellar features were huge looks for both artists. While Ash Riser isn't the most known artist, he is someone whose voice can be heard on every Kendrick album except GKMC. That's a level of loyalty you don't see every day in this industry. R.I.P to Alori Joh, another member of TDE that appears on the album who passed away in 2011. Tae Beast, Soundwave, and Willie B, before becoming the acclaimed TDE producers, were delivering quality production when the label was still on its ground floor. Without them, there is no TDE sound, there is no Kendrick Lamar. Even though Jay Rock is missing from this album, it's been well documented that his presence has been critical for the growth of Kendrick and TDE.

The Kendrick Lamar that we see today is much different than the man who rapped on this album. His album to album evolution is nothing short of astounding, somehow he continues to grow far beyond our imaginations. Even with all the changes, looking back, there's still so much he carries from the past into his present. From the styles to the concepts, you can trace almost everything back to his earlier work, the first real album of his career. Overly Dedicated is essential in understanding where Kendrick was before adopting the alien voices or embracing a more experimental sound. This one is completely hip-hop, for those seeking a lyricist with ideas and substance.

This is where it all begins—the arrival of Kendrick Lamar.

Mr Key & Greenwood Sharps - Yesterday's Futures

You, like I, like everyone, exist at the juncture between a single solid knowable past, and an infinity of possible futures. Which future becomes the present depends upon a combination of chance and millions of decisions, the vast majority of them so tiny they seem completely insignificant. Mostly we don't ever think about this process, but sometimes, the present you find yourself in is so hideously removed from the future which you previously imagined, you are forced to wonder how things went so horribly awry. All of those little choices don't seem so insignificant anymore. But wonder as you might, you can't change the basic fact, important things got fucked, and it's impossible to unfuck them. And there you are left, mourning for yesterday's futures, nostalgic for a reality which was only ever really imaginary.' - Personal correspondence - Mr Key to Greenwood Sharps - 15/02/2013
In May 2013, Mr Key and Greenwood Sharps met in a remote cottage in the North of Scotland to begin work on a collaborative project. The end result 'Yesterday's Futures' maps a journey through a very human process, coming to terms with the past, and searching for meaning in the present.
Yesterday's Futures is definitely a rap record, and yet, somehow it resonates beyond the often narrow confines of that genre. In the place of the usual self aggrandising braggadocio is a personal exploration of universal themes, loss, addiction, depression, childhood, and eventually, love and hope.
The combination of Key's honest and deeply personal lyrics with Greenwood's thickly textured and continuously evolving organic instrumentals paints an evocative picture of a world saturated in feeling, positive and negative. Key & Greenwood invite their audience to join them on a journey through a landscape of visceral emotion and beautiful noise, coloured with the bittersweet nostalgic palate of futures lost.
Always on point, Key is a natural teacher offering up his insights for our benefit. Yesterday's Futures is fresh learning.' Nick Mulvey
Mr Key is 1/5 of legendary hip hop crew Contact Play, alongside Jam Baxter, Dirty Dike, Ed Scissortongue and Ronnie Bosh. Elusive and enigmatic, rumours about his location and occupation abound. Libertarian mountain schools and off grid communes are often mentioned, but Key himself is unwilling to shed light on where he is or what he is doing.
Greenwood Sharps emerged as new and unique voice on the beat scene in 2011 with the release of his critically acclaimed debut ep 'Things Familiar'. After hearing the ep, Jamie XX contacted him personally, and name checked him as a producer he was loving in an interview with Clash. Since then however, Greenwood has been conspicuously absent. For the love of his beautiful music, we hope that we don't have to wait another 4 years for his next release.

After establishing himself as one of the most important artists of his generation with the albums 'Disc-Overy' and 'Demonstration', Tinie Tempah is now set to unveil the third chapter of his career with the new album 'YOUTH' which will be released on 31st March.
Tinie has spent the majority of the past year writing and producing new material in his home studio. The result is that 'YOUTH' is an album that's infused with ideas relating to its title, but also one that brims with the playful and uplifting aspects that fizzled throughout 'Disc-Overy'.
I wanted to give a nod to all of the genres of music I heard growing up that made me want to be a rapper,' explains Tinie. The good thing about being from London is that you hear so many different styles of music, and are exposed to so many different things. I wanted to make an album that felt nostalgic with elements of those big British sounds from different genres, whether that was garage, grime, hip-hop or R&B.'
It's also about empowering young people to think outside the box,' he continues. I was just a young boy out of south London who loved music and wanted to see the world and contribute to something that I love and have a passion for. I honestly feel that there is no limit to where you can get in life. I really believe that. Youth is the time where you dream without any limitations or fear. And I wanted to share MY story with the world through MY music.'
'YOUTH' also showcases Tinie's collaborations with emerging London-based talent including TroyBoi, Shift K3Y and Jakwob with tracks featuring Stefflon Don, MNEK and Kid Ink.

Mobb Deep - The Infamous - Special 20 Year Anniversary Edition

The Infamous is the second studio album by the American Hip Hop duo Mobb Deep, released in 1995. The album features guest apperances from Nas, Wu-Tang Clan members, Reakwon and Ghostface Killah. It marked Mobb Deep's transition from a relatively unknown Rap duo to an influential and commercially successful one.
One of the cornerstones of the New York hardcore movement, The Infamous is Mobb Deep's masterpiece, a relentlessly bleak song cycle that's been hailed by hardcore Rap fans as one of the most realistic gangsta albums ever recorded.
This is hard, underground Hip Hop that demands to be met on its own terms, with few melodic hooks to draw the listener in. Similarly, there's little pleasure or relief offered in the picture of the streets Mobb Deep paint here. They inhabit a war zone where crime and paranoia hang constantly in the air.

Dj Dsk & The Lost Soul Collective - Lamine / Police Woman

DJ DSK, originally from the UK, has been living in Kunming, China for over 15 years. He has been DJing and making music all over Asia and the UK and runs a popular party called 'Future Funk.' DSK has toured and recorded with Akil from Jurassic 5, Mystro aka Mysdiggi and Marc Hype and Jim Dunloop among others, and has spun at prestigious B-Boy events like BOTY, Freestyle Sessions and UK B-boy Champs. Lamine is a famous B-boy from France. He was asking me about doing a mix for his Redbull event and while looking through some vinyl for the mix, I found a sample and made this track, so the name stuck. Afro and Latin percussion maestro Sam Debell, aka People's Rhythm, also from the UK, but living in China added the killer percussion.
Police Woman is a remake of a famous break that I always loved to play at B-Boy events. Tim Hans, from Australia and a talented keys and piano player was living in Kunming, China, at the time so we sat down one evening and recorded the keys.Kunming Beats : When I'm in Kunming, I have an event called Beat Maker. The idea is we give out three samples and everyone brings their MPC machine, laptops, etc, and they have two hours to make a beat from the samples. This is one of the beats I made in D.T. Bar, Kunming, Limited Edition of 500 don't sleep!

21-year old South East Londoner Tom Misch announces his first solo EP "Reverie" released 15th July through his own label Beyond The Groove. Following on from his successful mixtape Beat Tape 2, Tom's new EP is an intrepid and invigorating adventure in sound, bursting with inventiveness.

Taking the musical ingredients of J Dilla style beats, John Mayer- esque guitar lines, and free jazz - then putting them all through his very own musical blender. "Reverie" is the most definitive moment of his career to date, foreign and colorful arrangements will entice even the most casual listener.

Tom's music has found him an eclectic array of supporters - from one of YouTube's biggest dance music channels, Majestic Casual, to the likes of Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, Huw Stephens, Clara Amfo and Jaden Smith. Plus there's the fact that Tom has earned the reputation as one of the best UK producers following remixes and reworks for the likes of Lianne La Havas, Mos Def and Busta Rhymes.

The EP is written and performed by Tom Misch, and includes collaborations from fast-rising wordsmith Loyle Carner as well as Laura Misch.

Various - Dj Spinna Presents The Wonder Of Stevie Vol. 3

The list of musical highlights for Vincent Williams
aka DJ Spinna are too numerous to list, from his
seminal hip hop duo Jigmastas and DJ sets across
the globe, to his iconic solo productions and
remixes. But if you ask him, it's the relationship
he's forged with personal hero Stevie Wonder
that Spinna considers to be his single greatest
achievement.
As with most artists of a soulful persuasion,
Stevie's music influenced Spinna from the outset,
dictating everything from his approach to writing
to his use of Fender Rhodes and Moog bass-lines
on his productions. Having gained so much from
the great man, Spinna decided to pay tribute in
the form of 'Wonderfull', a series of parties
celebrating the Wonder of Stevie. This is where the
story became somewhat surreal for Spinna,
suddenly finding himself joined onstage in
Washington D.C. by none other than Stevie
himself, a spine-tingling moment even when
viewed on YouTube.
An extension of the Wonderfull parties, this album
represents a celebration of the life, music and
cultural impact of Stevie Wonder. Few compilers
can boast Spinna's understanding of Stevie's back
catalogue, not to mention the large number of
songs he's written for other artists over the years.
Featuring stunning cover versions you may well
have never heard before alongside songs many of
us had no idea he'd written, Spinna's vast
knowledge of and boundless enthusiasm for
Stevie's music shines with every selection. As both
a super-fan and a close friend, surely there is
nobody better placed to compile this wonderful
document of Stevie Wonder's music, inspiration
and influence.

ATIC Records is proud to present the long awaited album collaboration from one of the UK's most celebrated underground producers, Aim (Cold Water Music, Hinterland, Flight 602), and master-blaster Long Island MC's QNC aka Q-Ball & Curt Cazal (legendary producer of the JVC Force classic 'Strong Island').

Three years in the making, 'The Habit of a Lifetime (And How To Kick It)', whilst comfortingly familiar in style to anyone fiending that early 90's golden-era hip-hop flavour, is certifiably fresh. It features Aim's finest, most inventive beat-scapes to date and vocally, Q-Ball and Curt Cazal are on fire with line after line of dope rhymes, topped with often hilarious punchlines and that syrupy flow that's getting harder and harder to find.

The album boasts a number of hand-picked, high profile 'features' including, B-Luv (JVC Force), Dimes, Niko, the great Grand Puba and the late Sean Price who sadly passed away earlier this year - a legend and true master of his craft. Of the 'We Don't Play' session Curt Cazal recalls 'he [Sean P] was the consummate professional. I played him the beat and he laced it in no time. He was quite a character and will be missed'.

With 'The Habit of a Lifetime (And How To Kick It)', Aim & QNC have succeeded in creating a timeless masterpiece that not only sits where the underground and the mainstream meet, but one that achieves that seemingly long-forgotten goal of making hip-hop with real soul.
