Jorja Smith is officially back. Further to making a recent return to the musical sphere with her singles ‘Try Me’ and ‘Little Things’, today she has confirmed the details of her highly anticipated second album,
‘falling or flying’, set for release globally on September 29th 2023 via FAMM and available to pre-order now - here.
Alongside the announcement, Jorja has also unveiled the album's poignant artwork; a stunning portrait of her, shot on film by the prestigious British photographer, Liz Johnson Artur. In addition, Jorja has also announced a series of UK live shows in September, commemorating the release of the album. Further details below.

‘falling or flying’ is an album that speaks to the musical and emotional era where Jorja is now, and how she got here. It isn’t so much an exploration of how she’s found herself but more a statement that she has arrived, and that her understanding of her life, her relationships, and her feelings, have deepened, matured and crystallised as she
enters her twenty six year. ‘And despite it all,’ she says, ‘it's definitely a journey I've just started. That's what's crazy. It's only just begun.’
Sonically, this album, a no-skips body of work, isn’t like anything you’ve heard before. It sits masterfully in this same space of excitement, self-exploration and self-assertion that Jorja does. Compromised of deep, thumping drums, racing basslines, irresistible hooks and distinctive beats, ‘falling or flying’ runs at the same pace that Jorja’s mind does. ‘I don't slow down enough’ she says. ‘This album is like my brain. There’s always so much going on but each
song is definitely a standstill moment.’
Much of the creative energy that shaped the album emerged from studio sessions with the producer duo DAMEDAME* back in her hometown of Walsall, where, to Jorja, the heart is. The album is both a sonic and an emotional tour of where she’s been, and what she’s been about, in the two years since she dropped her latest offering, ‘Be Right Back’. ‘It touches on breakups, relationships with my friends, relationships with old friends,
relationships with myself.’ She says. ‘It's definitely about a lot of relationships, but every song I write I can sing it to myself.’
Of the many British voices in music today, Jorja is among the most commanding, writing at a pitch of intensity and urgency that few can match. Over the past five and half years, since the release of her debut album ‘Lost & Found’, she has been celebrated unanimously across the world for her evocative song-writing, powerful delivery, pure emotion and unbridled talent as a young woman navigating her way through life and in 2021 was the year Jorja’s hiatus from music was broken. Enter ‘Be Right Back’, the holding space between the sensation that was ‘Lost & Found’, and ‘falling or flying’. ‘Be Right Back’ was born from playing, jamming, freestyling, and sounding out what Jorja had been on the edge of expressing all her life. It was a project entirely for her fans. “Be Right Back did exactly what I wanted it to do. It was a little waiting room so people knew I was coming back.”
And come back she has - entering a chapter of her return to music that’s certain to draw in and intoxicate Jorja’s fans and new listeners alike. And what has changed for her, in the five years since ‘Lost & Found’ dominated the charts and the soundscape? “I like this world that I've just come into. And I’m still figuring things out. Always
figuring things out.” Jorja says. “This is the first time I’m putting stuff out there that I can connect with right now.” Over the last few years, it’s been a reflective and transformative step into her mid twenties for her. She’s been able to step into herself and evolve as a songwriter and a woman despite an ever-changing musical landscape.
While she recognises that the global pandemic has been completely devastating, she acknowledges that it allowed her to stay still, to come more into herself, and to be more in control of the person she is, and of her musical output. Like some of the legendary musicians that came before her, Jorja is looking at the chaos and disorder in the
world right now with resourceful, refined eyes, and she sees the glorious opportunity and enormous responsibility that affords. Any time the discerning ear of Danny Krivit turns to upper echelon artists like the two featured on this latest 12-inch single, you know you’re in for a special treat, and that’s exactly what we have here. First up is Stevie Wonder’s timeless “If You Really Love Me,” a song written in 1970 by newlyweds Stevie and Syreeta Wright and simply glowing with the warmth and soulfulness that surrounds the happiest of unions. Krivit in conjunction with Kei and Nagi of Dazzle Drums, & Me & the Gang, utilizes the entire original song structure, in the process lifting Syreeta’s soaring backup vocals to the collaborative level they deserve, while underlaying the entire affair with Dazzle Drums’ trademark percussion-heavy, four on the floor thump. The result is certainly one of the finest, most respectful efforts in a field of Stevie house remixes that has seen far too many limp entries over the years.

Filling the flip side is Mr. K’s much-loved take on Chaka Khan’s “I Know You, I Live You.” Appearing in a rather murkily EQ-ed form in the early 2000's, this new issue wipes away the sonic sludge with a sparkling mastering job that reveals the full range of Mr. K’s epic edit. With pieces seamlessly stitched together from the original song, the album-only reprise, and Tony Humphries’ remix from the 1989 Life Is A Dance Chaka remix project, this rightfully celebrated mix can lay claim to being the definitive release of this undisputed classic. There are hardly better calls to the dancefloor than this, as partygoers at countless jams can attest. Chicago's Ten City have long been one of the most respected and successful vocal house groups to emanate from the city since the late 80s. The groups original and unique style fused elements of gospel and soul with acoustic, orchestral arrangements, underpinned by the throb of Chicago's house sound. Featuring the powerhouse production and vocal stylings of Marshall Jefferson with Byron Stingily, 'Be free’ is the first new release from the group since 1994. ‘Be Free’ - originally released in 2021 - was the sonic natural continuity of cult releases and worldwide club hits such as ‘That’s the way love is’ and ‘Devotion’ that have never left dance-floors, discerning DJs and dancers' hearts and memories since.

Dimitri From Paris has naturally been a fan of Ten City from the very beginning. Upon hearing 'Be Free' he reached out to producer Marshall Jefferson to ask him to remix his new song ‘Music Saved My Life’, and after a quick chat Marshall asked if Dimitri could remix ‘Be Free’ in return and a deal was struck. As with most of his work, Dimitri used all of the original production, respectively and intuitively adding a few extra touches for maximum dance-floor potential. It is no surprise then that this long awaited vinyl release of 'Be Free' comes with Marshall Jefferson and Byron Stingily's full approval, with Byron even being quoted as saying that Dimitri's new version is ‘one of my favourite mixes of one of my songs ever!’

Die Veröffentlichung enthält ein neues Artwork vom Designer des ursprünglichen Artworks von „Every Day“, Openmind, und eine Klapphülle mit Gilles Petersons Original-Linernotes. Außerdem wird eine Auswahl von bisher unveröffentlichten Fotos auf einer 12“-Karte präsentiert, darunter die Band im Rivoli Ballroom in London (fotografiert von Carl Fox) und J. Synod was created at Concordia Teachers College by three sophomores. The band had a few personnel changes in its first couple of years, but remained very stable for more than four decades. In the 1970s they released two 45 RPM singles and one full length album. This 45 RPM single contains the fantastic "Sheryl Song". On the A-side you find a previously unreleased recording titled "Anchors Away". This fantastic double-sider is certainly made for fans of the Praise Poems series but also everybody else who is into soulful AOR / yacht rock.

After her debut Timmion single "Don't Believe You Like That", Emilia Sisco is back in the fold with a double sider of the highest order. Emilia seems to feel right at home with the material that she cooks up with Cold Diamond & Mink, filling both songs to the brim with soul.

Despite its title, "Trouble" strolls along with a delicately sweet mid-tempo groove and a nicely abundant arrangement, each of Emilia's lyrical calls getting a response from the background harmonizers and the band steady tightening up while the song builds towards its conclusion. The B-side slows things down to a lush southern soul drawl, coming off like a classy forgotten Hi session.

Both of these tracks present a singer who has paid her dues by studying the craft and polishing it for years in front of live audiences. Now it's time for Emilia to push her voice out there on the wings of her own original songs, a feature that we've come to expect from the Timmion stable.

The iconic album series Back to Mine returns in 2019, to mark it's 20th anniversary, with the indomitable Nightmares on Wax, to share his personal collection of music for after hours grooving. The series was renowned for its eclectic selection and selectors which includes some of the biggest names in electronic and pop music, from the likes of Faithless to Pet Shop Boys, Groove Armada to New Order.

Building on Back To Mine's heritage for quality this edition comes as limited edition heavyweight vinyl and extra thick cardboard sleeve with full coloured bespoke artwork, commissioned from illustrator Rich Fairhead, depicting the artist's influences along side personal sleeve notes form Nightmares On Wax.

The collection includes three exclusive tracks, one new track from Nightmares on Wax, along with a remix from the man himself of seminal band Fat Freddy's Drop and brand new project Creative Principle. The album is impeccably mixed and blended, as you'd expect from a DJ and collector of George's pedigree. His selection includes a strong representation from his roots in Northern England. Opening with respected Manchester soul duo Children of Zeus, Hull's Steve Cobby provides his own 'Lefthanded Books' featuring Crazy P's Danielle Moore and also introduces his chuggy-disco project Chieftain. There's also room for the recent Nightmares on Wax recent single 'Look Up'. Shine is the first work of Italian drummer and producer Stefano Cosi. The record, published in March 2023 by Groove It Records, includes nine tracks; the producer decided to collaborate with a different singer in each one of them, carefully choosing the voice best suited for each track. All the singers involved are internationally renewed and familiar with the sounds and styles adopted by Stefano, and are accompanied by a wide array of extremely talented and experienced musicians. The reason behind this choice lies in the fact that the producer believes that making music is above all a cultural matter, in the sense of being part of a certain space and time with those who share the same curiosity.

Shine thus represents a journey through all the genres and sounds that have helped define the producer’s esthetic and musical dimension. The fil rouge throughout the record is groove and elegance of sound, explored in the record through different genres.

Mike Maurro is back at it. Taking the keys to the Philadelphia International Records vault and plucking out two certified classics The O'Jays - I Love Music and Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes feat. Teddy Pendergrass - Wake Up Everybody to give them a little Maurro re-edit magic.

Officially licensed and taken from the master tapes, Maurro extends each track in all the right places, looping sections up, echoing elements and keeping everyone calling out for more. Uplifting music for the soul, given a new lease of life.

Labyrinth is dark, brooding, beat-heavy, melancholic mood music courtesy of Ian Carr and the Nucleus crew. A favourite of Madlib, it goes without saying that this is one magnificent record. Originally released on Vertigo in 1973, Labyrinth was never re-pressed and of course those original copies are now very tricky to score. Like all the Nucleus records, it’s aged ridiculously well and this Be With re-issue, re-mastered from the original analogue tapes, shows off just why this deserves to be back in press.

Genius trumpeter and visionary composer Ian Carr was one of the most respected British musicians of his era. He was a true pioneer and saw the potential in fusing the worlds of jazz with rock, just as Miles Davis and The Tony Williams Lifetime did in the US. In late 1969, following the demise of the Rendell-Carr quintet, and tiring of British jazz, Carr assembled the legendary Nucleus. Regarding music as a continuous process, Nucleus refused to “recognise rigid boundaries” and worked on delivering what they saw as a “total musical experience”. We can get behind that.

Under bandleader Carr, Nucleus existed as a fluid line-up of inventive, skilled musicians. This constant evolution and revolution was all part of the continuous musical exploration and discovery that took jazz to new levels. And the music has kept relevant. To steal a line from a recent review of our re-issue of Roots, when it comes to anything Nucleus “it’s basically already hip-hop”.

At this point Carr had parted ways with guitarist Alan Holdsworth and as a result the Nucleus sound found itself returning to the core elements of groove and melody. Carr had become bolder and more self-confident in his compositions and it shows in the sheer ambition of Labyrinth. Composed by Carr, and with lyrics written by his wife Sandy, Labyrinth was the result of a commission from the Park Lane Group and funded by the Arts Council of Great Britain. Originally a live performance by an augmented Nucleus, some of the expanded cast were brought back for the recording sessions, including vocalist Norma Winstone. So as the front cover of the finished album says, this is literally “Nucleus Plus”.

Labyrinth is presented as a suite, based on the ancient Greek legend of the Minotaur with musical instruments representing the various elements of the mythology. According to the LP’s original sleeve notes, the bass clarinet represents the tragic element, the trumpet represents the heroic element and the voice represents the human element. The rest of the musicians represent the two societies of Athens and Crete and their comments on the story as it unfolds.

The album opens with the experimental, sumptuously dissonant “Origins”. Teasing strands of atmospheric bass clarinet introduce the first theme before swiftly fading out with a startling blast of staccato fanfares and big drums. Heavy. The album soon finds its rhythm as it alights on the spell-binding and groove-friendly “Bull-Dance”, showing off the best Nucleus has to offer: subtle trumpet melodies, compelling rhythms, a psych-rock vibe and tight soloing. And of course there’s Norma Winstone’s stunning wordless vocals, that also take the lead in the next track “Ariadne”, a spacey-jazz song with beautiful piano, flute and clarinet, and the only recognisable lyrics on the album. You might recognise a snatch of it being looped by Madlib on Quasimoto’s “Astro Travellin”. The first part of the improvised “Arena” closes out the first side of the album, a short experimental piece with piano and horns.

Over on the flip-side, the powerful second part of “Arena” introduces a new theme. It swiftly builds, with vocal melodies, piano and horns all pronounced over the thick drums snapping your neck. It comes on like an alternate take on “Bull-Dance”, noisier, with a looser rhythm. The triumphant, shuffling Latin-jam “Exultation” leans on more scintillating vocals from Winstone, and a chunky counter melody from the rhythm section. It’ll get you moving.

The final track, the haunting, twelve minute “Naxos”, is an incredible way to close out this remarkable record. A circling bass guitar loop inspiring the group to a meditative psychedelic jazz rock improvisation in a silent, Miles kind of way, with a great flugelhorn solo from Carr and an ace synth climax.

This Be With edition of Labyrinth has been re-mastered from the original Vertigo master tapes, Simon Francis’ mastering working together with Pete Norman’s cut to weave their usual magic with these wonderful recordings. Another great Keith Davis sleeve has been restored in all its airbrushed Golden Age of comics, gatefold splendour. Complete with Minotaur of course.

In 1987, a young Dimitri discovers that the "Ashley’s Roachclip" break was the backbone of Coldcut’s legendary ‘7 minutes of madness’ remix of Eric B & Rakim’s "Paid In Full"
He digs out the original 1974 song by The Soul Searchers, and falls in love with the rest of the music.
Fast forward 35 years later, DFP chops it up in an old school cut-and-splice way, adding a touch of modern technique to beef up the beat all throughout.

The original’s sophisticated funky beat, rolling bass, fuzz guitars, great horns and flute are all present in this new edit, adorning the extended sections of the infamous break.

"Ashley’s Roachclip" is a landmark soul funk number on its own, one that could have easily found its way into a Blaxploitation movie, or a subsequent Quentin Tarantino homage.

While a staple of the UK rare groove scene, it stayed an LP-only track on the second opus by Washington DC’s Soul Searchers ‘Salt of the earth’
Despite finding some later success as champions of the short-lived GoGo sound (in their Chuck Brown and The Soul Searchers guise) the drum heavy band never got the laurels it deserved.

Anyone who has had the pleasure of seeing Jalen perform live knows that he is one of the most captivating performers on today's soul scene. Plans for the album were struck just months before the COVID 19 pandemic shut the world down. While stationed in Germany in the RAF during the late 1950s and early 1960s, York-born alto and soprano saxophonist Trevor Watts met the drummer John Stevens, with whom he would form the Spontaneous Music Ensemble upon returning to the UK in 1965, which became an important vehicle for British free improvisation. Watts’ spin-off project Amalgam came two years later with Stevens and bassist Jeff Clyne, previously in the Jazz Couriers with Ronnie Scott; their debut LP Prayer For Peace is jazz improv at its most melodic, an unpredictable album of varying shades, with three unique takes of the song ‘Judy’s Smile.’

This tour-de-force of turntablism, proto-hip-hop, polyrhythms, and b-boy electro, sprung from the disruptive & fertile mind of punk architect Malcolm McLaren, finally gets the much needed reissue treatment that it so rightly deserves. This 40th anniversary edition of Duck Rock is packed to the gills with remastered audio, reconstructed artwork, and a whole additional disc of remixes and unreleased tracks.

McLaren, a sonic antiquarian and impresario, drew in conspirators from around the globe, adding sampling, scratching, skits, panpipes, merengue, and township jive to an already overflowing creative cup. Looking back from four decades on, there is no doubt whatsoever that Duck Rock’s significance has been felt far and wide with artists as diverse as Herbie Hancock, Neneh Cherry, Paul Simon, and Vampire Weekend taking leads from its trailblazing musical collage.

Originally intended for its 25th trip round the sun, this 40th anniversary edition of Duck Rock lands courtesy of The state51 Conspiracy on its original birthday - 27th May - as a limited LP + bonus 12" with indies-only "Duck For The Oyster" print.

This is the version of Duck Rock that Malcolm McLaren intended to release on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. He personally remastered the tracks and compiled an additional record with 6 tracks which were previously unreleased on vinyl. Unfortunately, he was unable to release it during his lifetime, but in collaboration with Young Kim and the Malcolm McLaren Estate, and licensed by Universal Records, the state51 Conspiracy has managed to reissue it in all its glory in time for the 40th anniversary - right up to the same date: 27th May 2023.
