Lee McDonald - We’ve Only Just Begun / I’ll Do Anything For You

Repress!

40 year anniversary release of this in demand modern soul masterpiece. For their third vinyl outing, Selector Series dig into the Archives of New Jersey’s Debbie Records from 1981 to re-issue this storming boogie re interpretation of The Carpenters standard, which found itself a legion of fans in the UK thanks to Gary Dennis’s championing of it.

In a pre Discogs era, this record attracted a £400 price tag amongst serious collectors back in the late eighties, with the original pressings still going for £500+ even now. The album has been re issued by several different labels over the ensuing years, but this double header is being made available for Record Store Day on a seven inch format for the first time officially, featuring the original album sleeve artwork.

THE WEDDING PRESENT - LOCKED DOWN & STRIPPED BACK VOLUME TWO

Locked Down And Stripped Back Volume Two features home recordings of Wedding Present classics along with a previously unreleased song: 'That Would Only Happen In A Movie'. The first volume in the series came about when David Gedge's annual festival At The Edge Of The Sea went 'virtual' in 2020 and the band recorded semi-acoustic versions of songs to be streamed. An album of the tracks was compiled and released due to popular demand. The same thing happened the following year and so Volume Two features tracks initially recorded for 2021's online festival. There's a bevy of guest stars on this second album! Jon Stewart of Platinum-album-selling Sleeper fame reprises his new role as Wedding Present guitarist but is joined here by some Wedding Present members of old. Peter Solowka, from the band's first line-up appears on 'Nobody's Twisting Your Arm' playing his second instrument, the accordion, while Hit Parade guitarist Paul Dorrington contributes to a re-working of the Top 30 single 'Blue Eyes'. Long-time Wedding Present bass player Terry de Castro returns to infuse the album with her own unique style, while current Wedding Present bass player Melanie Howard takes over the lead vocal duties on a beautiful version of 1986's 'At The Edge Of The Sea'. Last, but certainly not least, Amelia Fletcher - backing vocalist on George Best and Bizarro - also returns to the party! As on the first volume, each musician recorded and filmed their parts at home and, as before, it is fascinating to see how stripped-back arrangements bring out different aspects of these brilliant songs.

HEAVENLY RECORDINGS
01.03.2024

“Chorus is about a coming together of disparate elements. Not in some sort of utopian aesthetic where everything works perfectly, but in the natural flow and state of things”, erklärt Drummer Jim Rindfleish. “It’s about cosmic compatibility and chemistry: what makes things work?”

05.07.2024

Transcendental outernational funk and psychedelic jazz from mystery L.A.- based collective Sun Atlas

2nd edition with alternative sleeve and label design.

Little is known about Sun Atlas. The group members are hidden behind masks and costumes to keep their identities secret and to put the focus entirely on the music and oneness. A sense of community and universal spirit as an alternative to idolization and individualism is heavily reflected in their eclectic musical style.

The sound of Sun Atlas is mystical and cosmopolitan, combining afrobeat, cinematic soul, spiritual & ethio jazz with space sounds, hiphop-breaks and a garage funk vibe.

Their cryptic first 45 single "The Mystic Parade" b/w "Grand Theft" sold out immediately after release and has often been mistaken for either "lost" hiphop samples, 70s habibi funk or another project in disguise from the inner circles of the Mocambo, Big Crown or Daptonefamilies (which it is not).

Return To The Spirit picks up where Sun Atlas' first single leftoff, with everyone wondering where the journey might lead. With the door to a colourful universe opened, the full-length format gives time & space for further exploration.

ANGELO OUTLAW - AXIS OF TIME

Axis of Time is the stunning debut album from Philadelphia mallet percussionist and poet Angelo Outlaw. Featuring Eraserhood Sound's signature synth & soul production, Axis of Time is a dazzling blend of jazz, rare groove, funk, soul and r&b. According to Outlaw, the album is meant to transport the listener to a dream-like state, where space and time slowly fade away and reality is merely a distant memory. Each song sets a unique scene, as the pace of the music swells and sways_from the euphoric highs of lead single "Free My Mind" and uninhibited groove of "Speed of Light" to the trance-like meditation of "Dreams" and mournful melodies of "Invisible Clock," Angelo and the Eraserhood Sound house band truly go to the cosmos and back. The record is an extraordinary debut from Outlaw, a young gay Black man who hopes to serve as an inspiration to others who might be perceived as different or other. His work transcends race, creed, religion, and politics, and has the power to speak to the universality of time, space, and human connection.

Charlie Ingui a veteran blued eyed soul singer who formed the band The Soul Survivors In the 60's is back with a brand new single.

'Wake Up Old World' is a song about making the world a better place.

Gabriels - Love and Hate in a Different Time

Jacob Lusk, Ryan Hope & Ari Balouzian; an acclaimed gospel singer and choir director, an established film director and a classically trained musician and soundtrack artist. This is the trio that fate brought together and now make up Gabriels.

Their debut EP ‘Love & Hate In A Different Time’ comprises five songs that sound instantly of another era without faltering into throwback territory. True masters of story-telling, their timeless take on vintage soul, new R&B and just a hint of ultra-contemporary altpop have seen them become firm favourites of Gilles Peterson, Off White’s Virgil Abloh, Benji B, Annie Mac, Elton John... the list goes on.

The lead track and new single, ‘Love & Hate In A Different Time’, showcases their sound perfectly. A soul-stirring song with elements of funk and that joyous gospel influence too. Jacob has one of those terrifically cavernous deliveries and understands the power of when to adopt restraint and when to let rip. It’s raw, show-stopping and combines to form a magical few minutes of cinematic sound, unlike anything else out there today.

In the song’s long-form video, directed by band member and British born musician Ryan Hope (himself a celebrated music video director), we’re taken through a history of the dancefloor in archive footage, culminating in Jacob singing Billie Holliday’s Strange Fruit to a rapt audience during a Black Lives Matter protest in LA last year. It’s an engrossing, moving watch and an evocative listen.

Brownout & Jungle Fire - Renegades Of Jazz Remixes

"Matasuna Records" kicks off 2021 with another 7inch. This record features two remixes by German DJ and producer "David Hanke" aka "Renegades Of Jazz", for Afro-latin Funk bands "Brownout" and "Jungle Fire". Brownout's remix was first released in 2013 via Paris DJs on a very limited run of 45s and quickly became very sought after. By painstakingly cutting every instrument's individual notes, increasing the tempo and adding in a punchy breakbeat at the end, David turned "Flaximus" into an up-tempo dancefloor hit.

Jungle FIre's song "Comencemos" that appears on the B side is a cover version of Fela Ransome-Kuti's song "Let's Start".David added some more Afrofunk elements to the Jungle Fire version and builds a bridge to the original Fela version with the additional elements. The Jungle Fire remix is previously unreleased and will be available on vinyl for the first time.

"David Hanke" has been linked to "Matasuna Records" since our early days, when he released his "Dem Juju Poets" debut album on Matasuna in 2017. Most recently he delivered a dancefloor-friendly edit of "Mawuli Decker's" "Mololi-Lomko" at the end of 2020, again released on Matasuna. David is constantly producing and surprises regularly with new musical projects, restlessly trying to develop and refine his sound. With his new label, "Bathurst", he created a home for all his electronic music projects. Bathurst follows the notion of not focusing on any formats or genres, but caring more about the electronic music Hanke adores.

Nine-piece band "Brownout" from Austin/Texas, was formed in 2005 by members of the Grammy Award-winning Latin orchestra "Grupo Fantasma" and have since become a musical force of their own. In addition to three Austin Music Awards, the band has performed at countless events and festivals and has regularly toured the U.S. also as highly sought-after backing band for artists like Prince, GZA and many more. Their albums and singles have been released on labels like "Freestyle Records", "Ubiquity" or "Fat Beats".

"Jungle Fire" is an Afrolatin Funk band from Los Angeles known for their authentic and highly explosive sound. They quickly gained attention of the local Los Angeles scene and beyond, which led to their first release on the Funk and Soul label "Colemine". Other releases have been released on "Nacional Records", "Paris DJs" and "Razor N Tape". Their second album "Jambú" debuted at #4 on the Billboard Latin charts in February 2017 which led to numerous features in several movies, commercials and TV shows. They create a unique Afro-Tropical sound by combining West African rhythms with heavy funk elements.

Organic-electronic songs recorded in Togo by a feminist quintet. Voodoo tradition and soul, aimed for the dance floor

There are five of them, five, like the fingers of one hand, a hand ready to form a fist, to slam down hard on a table but also to gently caress the planet.

They all grew up in Togo, only a few frontiers away from Benin and Nigeria, several decades separa- ting them from the great Fela, the man who turned a Yoruba proverb into a hit: Water No Get Enemy. The members of Nana Benz also grew up with the knowledge that water was so precious it had no price, and that Mother Nature was a figure to be celebrated...

In fact, respect of the planet and its inhabitants lies at the very heart of their catalogue of songs, songs firmly anchored in the richness of voodoo heritage, songs extolling the value of freedom in English, French and Mina. Earth, wind, fire and water - Nature : that’s what voodoo is! “We’ve always been ecologists, without knowing it, because Voodoo is in fact Nature”, explains Izeale, one of the three vocalists. “At a given moment in our lives, we all dived headfirst into this heritage we had left behind. And there, we discovered the power of voodoo, but also its scales, its incredible rhythms, and its wonderful melodies. And now we dive back in once more, body and soul, because we need to possess enough strength to carry these songs!”.

Before walking down the path that led them to convents and voodoo ceremonies, these musicians experienced many trials and tribulations. “When you have been raised in a Christian environment, when you sang the praises of Jesus Christ, it’s not easy to turn to voodoo”, admits Parus. “But when I lost my parents at the age of 13, I ended up in charge of the family, and with my younger brothers and sisters, I was looking for a beacon! And that’s where I discovered that voodoo is not just a question of dolls and all that evil folklore we have made up, but that voodoo is within all of us, it’s life itself. And that saved me...”

From that time onwards, Kasanku, Lady Apoc, Parus, Toto and Izealedu never really intended to put this culture under the spotlight, yet they set alight the Transmusicales de Rennes in 2022 with a juggernaut of ceremonial electro-voodoo-soul.

Many years of work in the shadows were required before Nana Benz dared get up on stage. First of all, there was a chance meeting during a musical workshop, piloted by Peter Solo (the man behind the surprise and success of the group Vaudou Games, amongst other achievements). The five artists did not know each other yet, but instantly discovered that they were on the same wavelength. The first musical seeds sown quickly flourished. They started out with this completely organic rhythm, one that grabs you deep inside and makes you want to shake your hips. The instrumentarium of the two percussionists became more than powerful despite being 100% recycled. The formidable basslines were in fact created by two PVC tubes (the Gazé Tuyau), and a suitcase belonging to Toto’s grandfather, “a voodoo travelling salesman who visited the four corners of the earth”, provided a robust bass drum. Toto added genuine ceremonial pots belonging to his grandmother to the mix, equipment used to prepare potions for the “voodoo practising older ladies who would sing all the time, and whose voices ended up imprinted there”. These drums, charged with the voices of ancestors, quickly came to life thanks to the bass of the Gazé Tuyau and took on the name of “batterie Do It Yourself” (DIY drumkit). This organic groove gorged with subbass, and complex polyrhythms became a bedrock for the voices of three awe-inducing electro-soul preachers, accompanied by a small vintage Korg keyboard. The setup is minimalist, but oh so powerful, and managed to place thousands of spectators in a trance during the Transmusicales de Rennes festival. “The trance in our music is supplied by repetitive energy! It comes straight from the heart, and this is why our message carries Nature within it, as we honour this Nature in all that we do”, explains Lady Apoc. “We compose a lot using the voodoo scales of the snake (Dan) and that of Mamie Wata”, confides Kasanku, a former bass player, who took four years to assemble his incredible Gazé Tuyau.

All that was left was to find a name for this truly atypical quintet carried aloft by three voices and three very strong personalities. The band therefore settled upon Nana Benz, a tribute to the impressive wax print retailers of Lomé central market (Togo) who liked to drive a Mercedes Benz, women the powerful confided in as they knew better than anyone how to thread together the many strains of money and power, with feminist strength .... “We admire these women for displaying such courage and force within our patriarchal societies, but also voodoo, that teaches us that the material corrupts mankind, and that we must search for peace and harmony above all, so we are also far removed from commerce!”, adds Izealedu...

When the music starts, the five men and women who form Nana Benz are rise to this challenge with flying colours!

Collins & Collins - Top Of the Stairs/ You Know How to Make Me Feel So Good

The Collins & Collins version of “Top Of The Stairs” is a timeless modern soul classic. The song is composed by Ashford & Simpson, who originally recorded it, but even they switched to the arrangement on the Collins & Collins version when performing it live. The connection Expansion Records have with the song dates from its first UK/CD release on “Soul Chasers” in 1993, then the “Ashford & Simpson Songbook” in 2007 and now officially reissued on 7”, and the full length version too. It’s coupled with the exceptionally rare/in demand/expensive version of Gamble & Huff’s “You Know How To Make Me Feel So Good”, first recorded by Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes in 1975. Collins & Collins recorded one LP for A&M in 1980, both key tracks featured back to back on this 7”. Songs are produced by John Davis and recorded at Sigma Sound studios in Philadelphia.

Various - Studio One Disco Mix

Repress.

Studio One's music in the 1970's took the label to new heights. The new style of Disco Mix brought many areas of Reggae together Roots, Lovers, Disco and Dub all came together in extended form, re-versioning classic hits, experimenting with new studio technology, over-dubbing, syn-drums and more producing what many fans describe as the most creative and innovative phase in the history of the legendary Studio One Records.

BETTY DAVIS - NASTY GAL LP

- Betty's classic third album, originally released by Island Records in 1975 - New vinly pressing on Metallic Gold colored wax - Featuring Betty's band Funk House - Booklet includes liner notes by John Ballon interviewing Betty plus full lyrics - Newly remastered from the original analog tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio // In the 1970s, Betty Davis defied genre and gender by pushing her voice to extremes and embracing the erotic. She articulated a kind of pre-punk, funk-blues fusion that had yet to be normalized in mainstream music - a style that few musicians have come close to replicating. As one of the first Black women to write, arrange, and produce her own albums, Betty was a visionary who disregarded industry boundaries and constraints. Raw, unapologetic, and in full control, Betty paved the way for generations of future artists who said 'funk you' to the music industry and social norms. In 1975, Betty Davis's star was on the rise. With the backing of Island Records and a new band, Funk House, Betty's third album, Nasty Gal, leans into the hyper-sexualized persona with which her critics were so obsessed. She raps, purrs, shrieks, and moans on top of Funk House's manic funk-rock and lays claim to the "bad girl" anthems that now saturate the music industry. Mastered from the original tapes, Nasty Gal showcases Betty's groundbreaking work as a performer, writer, and producer.

Cool Million - Stronger LP 2x12"

Five albums, sixty tracks and still counting. Cool Million are back with a new album!

Ten years ago the euro soul duo Cool Million released their first album 'Going Out Tonight' on UK soul label Expansion Records. The album took the soul crowd by surprise, cause who were these guys that out of the blue, could recreated the soulful sound of the 80's hey day like no other?

The answer to that question is; Rob Hardt and Frank Ryle. One a super musician from Germany with skills you can only dream of. The other a Dj/musicfreak from Denmark with a masterplan – both of them with tons of dedication and passion for thier craft.

Thier passion and ambition have kept them in the came for a decade and they have worked with a long list of artists, some known some not, some forgotten some on their way up! The list include names such as: Jean Carne, Keni Burke, Shirley Jones, Eugene Wilde, Meli'sa Morgan, Rena Scott, Leroy Burgess, Peggi Blu, Yvonne Gage, Marc Evans, Alton McClain, Kenny Thomas, Lisa Stansfield, Tom Moulton, Joey Negro, Dimitri From Paris and John Morales, Glenn Jones, Marc Sadane, Tim Owens, Gavin Christopher, Michael Jeffries.

Cool Million tells that they feel privileged and humble when they look at the list of names they have worked with over the ten years. Futhermore they add; 'Who would have thought that two dudes from northern Europe would be able to create music with people that talented, we hope we could do it, when we started but that we actually done it, is amazing and wonderful'.

Reflecting on the first decade of Cool Million it's fair to say that Rob & Frank are two determined and ambitious gentlemen with extraordinary talent.

So what can Cool Million tell us abouth their new album? 'It's a classic Cool Million album where we work/collaborate with various artists, staying true to our original concept both in terms of genre and how we think a album works best. Having say that we think that our fans will be a little surprised with the fact that this is our slowest album to date. We believe we have more variety than ever and it's a fact that the music on the new album is slowed down in terms of more ballads and mid-tempo songs compared to our other albums'.

'The reason for this development is that we wanted to try something that was a little out of our comfort zone. Also we felt that we wanted to prove that we can do quality slow jams aswell. You could also argue that is's beause we both turned fifty this year.. haha'.

Dele Sosimi & The Estuary 21 - The Confluence LP

Dele Sosimi is the UK based Afrobeat ambassador, the former rhythm keyboarder for Fela Kuti's Egypt 80 and cofounder with Femi Kuti of the Positive Force. On his new album, alongside British musician Sam Duckworth, aka Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, he seeks pastures new on this later-life musical renewal, exploring the soulful side of jazz, r'n'b, funk and of course never far from his learned, life-partner, Afrobeat.

Having released anEPtogether early last year, Dele and Sam's journey continues, teaming up with various British musicians, for what is at times eccentric, yet constantly life-affirming record brimming with feelings of freedom and possibility.

To some it will come as no surprise that Dele Sosimi has crafted an album that is far-removed from the polyrhythmic intensity Afrobeat is known for. It was the drummer Tony Allen, the indisputable rhythm section of the Afrobeat genre and original member of Africa 70 who Dele refers to as "an uncle to me" who was a great influence on Dele in those early years. Tony would encourage him, on his trips to The Shrine to perform with The Positive Force, to explore the world outside of Afrobeat. And so he did.

Dele spent 7 years in Fela's artistic and infamous commune Kalakuta Republic between 1979 & 1986 where not only was he given responsibility to train the new recruits to Fela's Egypt 80 band (when the band went overseas on tour, often there were no-shows on the return flight), he also oversaw the band and The Shrine, whilst Fela was detained in prison. With Femi Kuti, he recruited and toured extensively with The Positive Force, which had a huge influence on the international insemination of Afrobeat music. And it was during these highly creative, intense and often chaotic years that he found his calling as a teacher, a passion and philosophy that he continues practising and following today. It was also during this period, in Kalakuta Republic that Dele became educated in the music of Fats Waller, Wayne Shorter, Grant Green, Alice Coltrane and Dorothy Ashby, with the DJs playing 24 hours a day in the commune, shaping his world view on music.

Indeed, it was in London 2013 that Dele was introduced to Sam Duckworth, the producer and co-collaborator onThe Confluence, at Felabration, an event and commemoration of the music of Fela Kuti. Nearly ten years passed before the two musicians connected in Sam's hometown of Southend-On-Sea (UK) in a post-lockdown creative boom, recording the first EP over a burst of week-long sessions in 2021. AfterThe ConfluenceEP was released to much fanfare in early 2023 (and BBC 6 Music playlist), the two musicians realised that there was still plenty to put to tape, creativity was still oozing and thus the initial idea of a few tracks soon led to the idea of a fully-fledged album project.

The Confluence LPis an amalgam of wonky, piano paved pop with catchy and jazzy refrains, some galloping Afro rhythms and the deep baritone voice of Dele Sosimi. Previous singles include the BBC 6 Music playlistedMo Se B'ólá tán,the horn heavyẸ Si M'ẹ̀dọ̀andFor the Love of It, a song about enjoying what you do for a living, which perfectly surmises the album's motivation,"Whatever you do for the love of it, keep doing it for the love of it".The Confluencefeatures UK percussion royalty in Snowboy alongside other top UK players including Alfa Sackey (percussion), Callum Green (drums), Philip Van Den Brandeler (bass), Pete Fraser (sax), Sam Eagle (voice & guitar) and Lizzy Dosunmu (vocals) and of course Sam Duckworth playing various instruments.

Since returning back to settle in the UK from Nigeria in 1995, Dele has continued his music expanding reach, without limits. In London, he's forged a close relationship with DJ Dom Servini and his Wah Wah 45s label and regularly collaborates with bands and producers, in need of a touch of original Afrobeat authenticity. In recent years he's collaborated with Prince Fatty, Onipa (Real World), Newen Afrobeat and had his work remixed by the likes of house legends Joe Claussell & Timmy Regisford, Detroit Swindle, Medlar and DJ Khalab..,the list goes on. Dele has an experimental group that works around Afrobeat improvisation and the Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Orchestra continues to make strides, astounding worldwide audiences, with its powerful big band sound, channelling those early experiences working with Fela Kuti.

Sam Duckworth, the producer and mainstay on this new recording, has been releasing music as Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly for half of his life. A catalogue that includes four top 40 singles, two top 40 albums (including the gold certified 'Chronicles of A Bohemian Teenager' that recently celebrated its 15th anniversary), a German club number 1 single and collaborations with artists ranging from Shy FX, Baaba Maal, Lily Allen and Jehst. Recently, Duckworth produced Benjamin Frances Leftwich's album 'To Carry A Whale' and has been working on the forthcoming album by Kate Nash.

Pete Jolly - Seasons LP

Organic, electric, freeform. Pete Jolly's Seasons is comprised of melodies and textures composed live and without pretense—its grooves contain a complete and divine listening experience that surpasses all others of the era in which it was originally released, coming as close to transcendent musical meditation incarnate as one could possibly imagine. Seasons is an unsung masterpiece of ensemble groove and stellar musicianship, equally unsurpassed and inspired in its quiet excellence

While Seasons never had significant commercial success upon its release, it has since amassed a cult following, leading collectors to pay top dollar for copies of the rare record. Out of print since 1971, it has only been reissued once on CD.

In his liner notes accompanying this release, Dave Segal puts the album’s massive demand in perspective: “British label owner Jonny Trunk put up an original pressing of the LP for sale for an undisclosed but large sum on Instagram in January 2023, and it sold in five minutes. With Seasons back in circulation, maybe Pete Jolly will finally gain the broader audience that his phenomenal skills merit,” writes Segal. “If nothing else, it serves as a valuable lesson to artists: venturing outside of your comfort zone can bring the most interesting, enduring results.”

Remastered from the original analog master tapes by Kevin Gray at Coherent Mastering, this record not only foreshadows the roots of hip-hop but manages to embody the richness of a full album listening experience that few records can offer. Its timeless appeal is rare—and its dynamic range sets it apart as an album that straddles both the jazz and pop worlds in a way that almost no others can. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the changing and complex colors of Seasons for the first time ever since its initial release.
