Dubkasm Featuring Luciano & Turbulence ^ - Jah Victory / Right There

After causing shockwaves throughout the world of reggae and beyond, Dubkasm's seminal instrumental smash 'Victory' has travelled from Bristol to Jamaica and back again. This new version is voiced by Luciano, arguably the greatest roots reggae singer of the modern era, and veteran deejay Turbulence, who steps up with a fiery, righteous counteraction. With its tough, unstoppable rolling bass, unique percussion and crisp, driving horns, the original version was the bestselling roots release of the decade. The exclusive dubplate of Luciano's incredible performance has been a fixture at soundsystem stalwart Aba Shanti's dances for the past year, and is finally available on 12-inch, backed with Turbulence's all-new deejay militancy. Both performers stay true to the spirit of the original, bringing out different sides of the Dubkasm ethos: Luciano is soaring and jubilant, while Turbulence chats pure and unflinching reality, delivering his most unforgettable chorus since breakout hit, 'Notorious', in the process. Each vocal is followed by an uncompromising, deep, old skool dub, with crackling delays and thunderous spring reverb. Mastered on ½' tape at the world-famous Stardelta studio and cut to 180g vinyl, the pressing does full justice to the depth of the music; you can hear every hi-hat and every last vocal inflection. This is an unmissable release.

Jaribu Afrobeat Arkestra - Jaribu

This guitar player definitely wears acoustic blinders. Single note lines and riffs similar to early James Brown recordings, executed with amazing perfection - one can't imagine a more stoic performance, especially considering what's happening at the same time:

Blazing horns in unison and a slightly awry choir come together, work in opposite directions, completing a true rhythmically woven carpet with the tight rhythm section's network: multi-layered, close-knitted and nearly impenetrable. You can't escape from those tunes! Arms, legs and hips have to follow the pulse: one moment light-footed, the next heavy and uncompromising, fitting the distinct messages, criticizing worldwide "social absurdities" (JariBu).

The eight Japanese Musicians led by Masamichi Ishikawa play more Funk and Jazz than the Nigerian Afrobeat originals Fela Kuti and Tony Allen did: a swift flute, a blazing trumpet playing and extensive solos from the very beginning - just check out the opener, it runs more than nine minutes! Occasionally there's a nasty fuzz guitar which reminds one of the 1970ies, accompanied by tape hiss and amp noise. You've gotta love it!

Since 2009 there have been four long players by JariBu Afrobeat Arkestra. However the new "JariBu" is, similar to "Mediacracy" (Tramp Records 2012) the Tokyoites' second Record, distributed internationally. But they have been more than well received in the past few years - the Japanese Afrobeat word has been spread in the past and will be spread even more in the future!

Mungo's Hi-fi - Get A Lick Feat Blackout Ja /kuff Riddim

You should recognise this cut of the kuff riddim from its appearance on Mungo's Hi Fi's 'Serious time' album where Speng Bond sang about an Animal dance. It is a tried and tested boom tune, and here is it with a roaring vocal from gravel voiced Blackout JA licking and kicking down babylon, and completed with the riddim track on the flip. A fine piece of dance weaponry for those fast enough to catch one of the 500 limited copies.

Count Owen & His Calypsonians - Calypsos Down Jamaica Way

Available on CD and LP - comes with Japanese obi strip.

Crucial recordings of the early 60's multifaceted Jamaican Music. Funny and sharp, with the catchiest tunes: this is foundation music to move your feet! Calypsos Down Jamaica Way is the significant piece to discover howJamaican music was created by the fusion of the Jamaican indigenous Mento and popular Calypso.

The album starts off with the moody instrumental tune 'Good Bye to Rome' which is perfectly harmonized by the excellent performances of Sugar Belly's bamboo sax and Charlie Organaire's harmonica and banjo. The flute freely plays to a pure Mento beat on the next number 'Go Fife Go'. The love song 'Yours' follows and Count Owen sings smoothly on 'Lawd Some Men Could A Smart' to close the A-side.

On the flip, Owen delivers the finest vocal with his specialty, Cha-Cha and Mento fusion, in 'Careless Hands'. Other songs include 'Weed', the 'Melody D'Amour' song adding a bit of European seasoning, and 'Kingston Town' describes Kingston's moody atmosphere. The Calypso style roots chanting 'Out The Fire', and a pure traditional Mento vocal on 'The Last Watch' close the album. The songs are rich in variety, and the techniques of instrument playing are fluent. All songs are presented in high quality sound with Federal's highly equipped Hi-Fi technology.

Kiddus I - Rockers: Graduation In Zion 1978-1980

Comes with liner notes and Japanese obi strip. Available on CD and 2xLP.

Dub Store Records presents Kiddus I - Rockers: Graduation In Zion 1978-1980

Recordings by the legendary Roots singer Kiddus I, who appeared in the "Rockers" film, are released for the first time. "Rockers: Graduation in Zion" is the first release in a series of three albums that will bring to the public the majority of his existing recordings.

Kiddus I is the mysterious figure singing at the start of the film Rockers. A graduate of Ras Michael's Sons Of Negus, a key member of The Wailers milieu, and a Black Ark artist, his recordings - centred on the Roots Reggae period - are marked by the openness of their musical horizons, and a striking originality and integrity. (Also during this era he was a key voice raised in the Jamaican music industry against political oppression.)

Yet Kiddus I's disdain for careerism has held him back from the spotlight - as so many people in Jamaican music will tell you. Now, this revelatory, comprehensive retrospective will surely confirm his place amongst the all-time greats of Reggae music.

This compilation consists of every single recorded at Lee Perry's Black Ark between 1978 and 1980 and unreleased sound sources recorded at Tuff Gong. The best sessions of the most accomplished international Reggae musicians are unveiled for the first time in twenty years.

PRODUCED by: F. Dowding. ARRANGED by: F. Dowding. RECORDED at: Black Ark, Tuff Gong, Harry JStudio, Sound Dragon NY. MIXED by: Lee Perry, Dennis Thompson & Chow Chow, Stephen Stewart. ENGINEER: Lee Perry, Dennis Thompson, Mervin Morris, D. Lee. OVERDUBBED at: Aquarius Studio.

The Hempolics - Life Ain't Easy

The Hempolics are out to put those organic rootsy vibes back into electronic music and bring something altogether different to the table...

Grippa, Harry Collier, Nubiya (Nubiyan Twist) and Dandelion (The Drop) formed the band in 2010 and caused an instant stir with their single Serious on the Reggae Roast label, which hit number one in the UK reggae charts. The band now rolls out as an 9-piece at full strength, with ranks often swelled by visits from various international talents such as Maxi Jazz and Paulo Nutini to name a few. Their tight as a tick live performances - honed supporting Faithless' final ever show in front of 4000 people at Brixton academy as well numerous small but necessarily on point venues - are arguably the best kept secret on the UK circuit today.

There is a full album of material on the way for a spring 2015 release in the shape of 'Kiss, Cuddle & Torture: Volume 1', all recorded in back to basics fashion throughout the bedrooms and home studios of the band; although the weather out might be dull London-side it's strictly sunshine vibes, resplendent with huge hooks and festival-friendly choruses.

'Life Ain't Easy' is the first single from the forthcoming LP and sets out a bold statement of solidarity The Hempolics, recognising the struggle and hardship of life whilst sending out love and ultimately a message of hope to the community. On the B-side is the remix from Candian pioneer Dubmatix, bringing a heavyweight slab of soundsystem fodder that's sure to get dance floors jumping right through 'til summer time.

Souleance - Jogar

Souleance

Jogar

12inchFW127
FIRST WORD RECORDS
04.08.2014

It's summer time and at First Word we like to have a little break and recharge our batteries: go to a few festivals, take a holiday, relax with some Pimms and a BBQ or two. Before we sign off for a few months though, we'd like to leave you with something to soundtrack our hiatus in the shape of the irrepressible Souleance. Last year's 'Brotha EP' solidified the French duo's status as producers who know how to create dance floor dynamite. This time Soulist (DJ behind the legendary Paris party What The Funk) and Fulgeance (Musique Large label boss & producer) have reached into the extensive Brasilian collection of Alice Dufay, the lady behind the fresh and distinctive artwork of all Souleance releases, to bring us the 'Jogar EP'. With the World Cup in full swing, the sounds of South America are a natural choice for summer 2014 and Souleance's offering is as funky as you'd expect.

'Segrados do Samba' is their take on the classic Samba rhythm with a gentle rolling break nuanced with percussive licks and subtle keys. 'Vem Jogar' adds some trademark Souleance synth bass to the party taking it into darker club territory whilst still retaining a summery lightness. 'Novo Mundo' rounds off the 7" with hip hop drums added to a lazy keys break and catchy vocal hook. The digital version of the EP comes with a bonus track 'Dum Dum' - imagine the soundtrack to a Sao Paulo carnival chopped and twisted through an MPC and you're halfway there! Released to bridge the gap between the World Cup fever and the summer festival season, Jogar is what we'll be listening to whilst we're on our holidays - we hope you will too.

Leroy Smart - The Don Tells It Like It Is

Leroy Smart the self proclaimed 'Don' carries much respect in the Jamaican musical community, he came through the Alpha boys school in Kingston that provided us with the cream of Jamaican artistic talent.
Such legends as Don Drummond,Tommy Mc Cook and Johnny Dizzy Moore to name but a few.
Leroy Smarts talent lay in his vocal attacking style that gives his lyrics and tune that extra meaning.
His best work came in the heady mid 70's working with 'The Hitmaker from Jamaica' Mr.Bunny Striker Lee.
Bunny put Leroy Smart on some of his best rhythms starting in 1973 with 'God Helps the Man' and 'Wreck up my Life'.
Other killer hits were to follow such as 'Mr.Smart','Pride and Ambition','Bad Minded People' and the attacking 'Mr.Richman'.
All tracks telling it like it is.............
We have compiled all these cuts together, every song a story in itself, told only as Leroy Smart could.

Sound System - Dub Plate Specials 1975-1979

The Sound Systems of Jamaica were always the people's radio station.
Tunes were tried and tested in the lion's den of the dance to see which songs rose to the top and became the most popular.
This was the litmus test and the first step to a tracks commercial release to capitalise its hotness on the circuit.
Then the Dub/Version hit big in Jamaica in the early to mid 70's this was also the case and many times the version cut of a track would even prove more popular than its vocal counterpart.
We have compiled some great 70's dub plates that rocked the Sound Systems in fine style...
Hope you enjoy the set....

Da Lata - Free

Da Lata

Free

12inchAR082VL
Agogo Records
17.11.2014

During the course of 2014 Da Lata were forced to negotiate a tricky situation, but nonetheless a joyous one, as singer Jandira Silva gave birth to a baby girl in March. In Jandira's leave, Patrick Forge and Chris Franck decided to enlist the considerable talents of Vanessa Freeman for some gigs. Following on from some superb performances, the band decided a cover version might expand the repertoire to suit the gospel fuelled talents of Ms. Freeman. For Patrick this was a no brainer, the very first tune that sprung to his mind was Seawind's "Free". The Hawaiian groovers anthem having just the right balance of spiritual message and sambafied rhythm. Infact Vanessa could have been born to sing this song and indeed she effortlessly made it her own bringing a full blooded soulfulness to bear. It seemed a shame to not make some record of this serendipitous coming together, so that's exactly what they decided to do... make a record. Going in to Ray Davies legendary Konk studio at the beginning of the summer, "Free" captures Da Lata live band in full flight, tight, funky and sinuously grooving their way. The B-side reinstates "Monkeys And Anvils" to its original incarnation as an instrumental, before Rich Medina dropped some dope poetics on this afro-funk 6/8 groover. Bringing Finn Peters deft and passionate sax back into the foreground, this is another rework from Da Lata's acclaimed "Fabiola" album.

Bunny Lee - Agro Sounds 101 Orange Street

Countless incredible records were made in Kingston between 1968 and 1971 that has never been able to lose the stigma of being described as 'Skinhead Reggae' but in Jamaica the term never meant anything. However Bunny Lee's Aggro Sound's both at home and away.
They were tougher then tough ,rougher then rough ,kicked like a 'bovver' boot and were sharper then a razor cut trim.
Raw, pure and undiluted every time...some even troubled the UK national charts..
To say the man and his music dominated at the time would be a complete understatement.
'Striker' was everywhere...travelling between Kingston, where he opened his Agro Sounds record shop at 101 Orange Street and London where he set up his Unity label with the Palmer Brothers for the exclusive release of his productions and his Jackpot subsidiaries with both Trojan and Pama records.
Ubiquitous does not start to come into it.
We sincerely hope that this compilation helps to point you in the direction of some of the best music from this often overlooked period from one of the greatest producers EVER!

King Tubby - Hometown Hi-fi Dubplate Specials 1975-79

18

King Tubby's Hometown Hi-Fi was one the great Sound Systems in Jamaica. It also proved a fantastic outlet for the Dub Plate Specials cut at Tubby's studio, providing exclusive cuts to be played out and to intice the dance's audience. The tracks at the time were mainly cut over producer Bunny 'Striker' Lee rhythms, that Bunny stored at Tubby's studio which was in fact his home, 18 Drumilly Avenue,Kingston, Jamaica. The versions were given exclusive plays at Tubby's sound
before some finding their way on to vinyl, as the b-side version cut to it's a-side vocal, proving so popular that the records were often brought for its version side over its vocal counterpart. King Tubby and Producer Bunny 'Striker' Lee are intertwined in the birth of Dub Music, after discovering a mistake that made a 'serious joke' (more of which later...) they went on to release the first pressings of this new musical genre namely 'Dub Music'. Tubby's vast knowledge of electronics and Bunny's vast catalogue of rhythms would lay the foundations of what today is taken as a standard... the Remix / Version cuts to an existing vocal tune. Osbourne 'King Tubby' Ruddock was born in Kingston, Jamaica on 28th January 1941 and grew up n the High Holborn Street area of downtown Kingston. He studied electronics at Kingston's
