DEADBEAT REISSUES 2002-2005 ALBUMS AS
LIMITED EDITION DELUXE VINYL BOX SET
Featuring 3 classic albums that introduced his intimate brand of dub-techno to the world

Ever since launching his production career at the turn of the century, dub-techno auteur Scott Monteith has been nothing if not deeply prolific. The Canadian-born, Berlin-based producer's nine Deadbeat albums and nearly two-dozen singles represent one of most prolific and consistently rewarding catalogues in 21st century electronic-music canon. It's a spectacular run of records that continues to hit new heights, as witnessed with the widespread acclaim that met his most recent album with Paul St. Hilaire, The Infinity Dub Sessions. Continuing the reissue campaign of his early output that began with 2001's Primordia last year, Monteith's BLKRTZ imprint is now set to release a massive 6-vinyl box set of his most iconic Montreal albums: 2002's Wild Life Documentaries, 2004's Something Borrowed, Something Blue, and 2005's New World Observer.

Various - A Guide To The Birdsong Of South America

'A Guide to the Birdsong of South America', is a crowd-funded album of music inspired by birdsong. Some of South America's most talented young musicians and producers including Dengue Dengue Dengue, Chancha Via Circuito and Psilosamples, used the recorded song of an endangered species from their country and created an original track. The album aims to raise awareness about the plight of these birds and also to raise funds for those working to protect them. All proceeds will be donated to a pair of Ecuadorian NGO birding charities, the Fundación Jocotoco and Aves y Conservación.The album will be a diverse snapshot of the region's new sound, taking in seven South
American countries from Brazil to Chile and ten artists, from the much hyped digital Peruvian cumbia of Dengue Dengue Dengue to Argentinian rhythm trio Tremor. French born Nicola Cruz has worked with electronica whizz Nicolas Jaar, and has now returned to his roots in Ecuador, making this project close to him in every sense of the word. The birdsong and the story of these 11 unique birds became the building block for each track in a myriad of different ways by each artist. Some used the song as a sample throughout, others incorporated it into the background while some even transformed the birds into a synthesizer! Others also took inspiration from the bird itself, its colours, its form, its threatened situation or its habitat.
Environmental activist and passionate bird enthusiast Robin Perkins' global music blog Rhythm and Roots have been able to fund the production, mastering and distribution of this unique project through a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign in the summer of

David Anthony & Derrick Harriott & The Crystalites - All Night / Tickler

A fine vocal Rocksteady, 'All Night' is also known as a killer dubplate owned by Duke Vin, who is regarded as a pioneer of the sound system culture in UK. On the flip ''The Tickler' was more popular than the A-side, and in UK, allegedly no one else besides Duke Vin owned the vinyl until the 90's. This song was surely a very special one in his Dub Plate box!

Kalbata & Mixmonster - Inna Skateland

The contemporary reggae world was rocked and happily shocked when Freestyle Records unleashed Kalbata & Mixmonster's Congo Beat The Drum album in 2014. The wholly analogue, old school production combined with the classic Jamaican vocalists featured such as Little John, Major Mackerel, Echo Minott had everyone from Toddla T to Robert Elms absolutely raving about the albums genuine roots and culture feel.

And now Freestyle presents another single, Inna Skateland, that features legend Puddy Roots on vocals, whose voice is brilliantly well suited to the dub heavy, reverb laden music. The flip side, Skateland Dub, is a brand new track, not featured on the album and is 100% exclusive to this brand new release!

Red Dragon - Jam Down Posse / Jam Down Posse Version

"Jam Down Posse" by Red Dragon was recorded on the classic Studio One "Far East" rhythm, so people might feel there is something similar to the hit song 'Tune In' by Cocoa Tea. King Jammy released two one-way albums on this rhythm and featured many singers and deejays on them. This song by Red Dragon is from one of those albums and one of the best ever on this rhythm.

It is well-known that Wayne Smith, who was deeply associated with Jammys in the production of the 'Sleng Teng' rhythm, was an essential individual in embracing the digital revolution of the Reggae and Jamaican musical history. The tough bassline, symbolizing Jammys' real sound, perfectly fuses with the young Wayne Smith's high key voice to create another killer tune.

Supercat - Ever Ready

1

Spring Hill Records are immensely proud to bring you this unreleased Supercat bombshell from 1984!

On a recent visit to Jamaica we uncovered this unbelievable treasure - A huge track by the young Supercat, produced and recorded in 1984 by Jah Thomas. For reasons unknown, the tune never came out and was sitting patiently for 31 years, waiting to be discovered! Taken from the original master tapes, this is by far one of Cat's fiercest tunes. A prototype to his Sleng Teng anthem 'Trash and Ready', 'Ever Ready' is a strictly Clarks Wallabies and knits ganzie affair, with Supercat calling all posses as they roll in the dance. Cool & Deadly heavyweight mix with a riddim track by the mighty Roots Radics, this 45 is simply too essential to miss!!!

Bruno "Patchworks" Hovart is a name to remember when it comes to modern groove music! Bassist and guitarist in various band, he started production in the mid- 90s and continues today to combine modern technology with the raw and genuine spirit of the golden age of Disco, Funk, Soul, Jazz, or Reggae.

Based in Lyon (France), he's constantly been looking up for new artists and adventures to feed his endless appetite for production and composition. As a result, his discography is quite exceptional today and the list of projects he's been involved in quite impressive: Uptown Funk Empire, Mr President, Metropolitan Jazz Affair, Mr Day, Hawa, or Patchworks Galactic Project are just a few examples... Album after album, he proved a true gift of musical ubiquity, renewing in all genres and always mindful to ensure high standards.

Since 2007, just following the international success of The Dynamics first album, Patchworks has also started to hide under Taggy Matcher alias, releasing fine Reggae remixes on Stix Records, a subdivision of Favorite Recordings. And after a few years seeing these remixes played all over, the mysterious Taggy Matcher and Stix Records decided it was time to go further and prepare a first album.

After a first single covering two tracks of The Black Keys and shedding lights on a new singer called Birdy Nixon, Taggy Matcher recently presented the song 'My Man', alongside another surprising great songstress from Lyon: LMK. On this track, Taggy dug more into the Digital Reggae sound from the early 80s, showing another side of his production scale, more famous for his Rocksteady-Roots style until then.

Coming out late November, Taggy Matcher' first album, called Singasong, definitely explores even more into the various styles of Jamaican music. Surrounded by a loyal team of musicians, he continues the long-standing local tradition of covers, taking over titles as varied as "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath or "No Love Allowed" by Rihanna, to name just a few.

As for vocals, Taggy also gave his trust to a fine crew: around a captivating Birdy Nixon, the young LMK shows eloquent skills, as do Mr Day and John Milk, his two longtime buddies. And whether it's in adaptation or composition, the sound and production of this first album impress by its authenticity and style.

The Cosmologist - Cosmology Volume 3

The New Year starts with the welcome news that The Cosmologist returns with episode three of the Cosmology series.

Trip 1 started life as a tribute to 70's radical firebrand's The Last Poets and their 1977 clarion call to arms, 'It's a Trip'.

A loose and ever changing collective, the initial line up was formed on May 19,1968 to mark Malcolm X's birthday, having all met at East Wind, a Harlem based writers work shop.
They took their name from a revolutionary South African poet Keorapetse Kgositisile who rightly prophesized that the talking would soon give way to the persuasiveness of the gun.

Continuing that thought, civil rights for African Americans was very much the beat of The Last Poets; a cause they would champion and indeed, were not afraid to back up their mighty words with direct action.

However, the project was a long and laboured affair spanning many months, and try as they might, the original track just would not to be bent into shape for a modern dancefloor.

It simply refused to yield to the editing process, to the extent that it led to Laurie (the musical genius, rhythm section & orchestra behind The Cosmologist) labelling it a 'problem child.'

The message within that original 1978 track was so powerful and despite the advances made in racial parity in the ensuing decades, inequality remains stubbornly entrenched, leaving so much of the Last Poet's 35 year old sermon ringing as loud and true today as it did when it was first unleashed. In a Broken Britain that last year saw a massive rise in food banks on the one hand, whilst the other hand spent a staggering £6 billion at the Boxing day sales, 'the man' may have moved out of plain sight, but he is still running the same game.

In the end, following the purchase of a Roland SH 1000 (fans of Imagination will instantly recognize the bass synth that gave Body Talk & Illusion those killer hooks) it then led the track somewhere altogether unexpected. Sometimes, you just have to let go of an idea and the beats take over to decide upon the final destination.

The end result draws inspiration from' it's a Trip', where the faintest snatches of the vocal ghost in and out of the mix. From there, a slow and menacing chug builds into an epic journey that takes us to the very heart of Balearica that will we are sure, find favour amongst DJ's who opt for a more eclectic playlist .

As with any problem child, perseverance, patience and a lot of love helped Trip 1 to flourish, and to finally find its true voice.

Trip 2 is different beast altogether and can be traced back to the very dawn of the Cosmic movement, via Italian originator Daniele Baldelli. Mike Oldfield's Foreign Affair was a track he picked up on its 1983 release, as it fitted his hypnotic electronic sensibilities perfectly and many DJ's have since adopted it over the years as an ethereal end of night anthem.

As with all The Cosmologist reconstructions, the track is reworked so as to grace a contemporary setting, whilst retaining the essence of the original.

The influence of Jah Shaka hangs heavy in the air, with an authentic 70's style dub designed to rumble those speaker stacks. This is the sound of a popular holiday destination out of season and it warms the soul like late winter sunshine.

A limited, hand stamped 12" on crystal clear vinyl, this next piece in the Cosmology jigsaw will be let loose in spring, for those who know where to look...

Under the influence, and always under the radar...

Copies sent to Andrew Weatherall, DJ Harvey, Daniele Baldelli, Giles Peterson and Luke & Justin UnaBombers.

V/a - Rocksteady Taking Over Orange Street

Rocksteady took over Orange Street ,Kingston, Jamaica around 1966,the same time that an extreme heat wave hit the Jamaican Island.
Some say the previous jerky Ska Rhythms proved too strenuous of an activity to partake in during the all night Sound Systems.
So it proved a winning formula to slow the beat down to a more leisurely pace.
Whatever the reasons were this two year period that ran until 1968 would see some of the power escape from the big three producers,Clement 'Coxonne 'Dodd,Prince Buster and Duke Reid...who up to that period ruled the airwaves. It was time to make room for a new wave of up and coming producers that also had something to offer the people.
So sit back and enjoy some Rocksteady straight from the dances of Jamaica...
Hope you enjoy the set...............

Eltron John / Eddie C - Ludzie Z Marsa/stoneczna Promenada

Brand new (and also the last one) treat in the The Very Polish Cut-Outs 7inch series, usually devoted to quirkier and weirder tracks than the much acclaimed 12" samplers.

Eltron John kicks off the A side with a reggae influenced rework of a Polish children's song from late 80's called 'Ludzie z Marsa'.
His modern, dubby production and close attention to the smallest details fuses perfectly with abstract lyrics. This serious-not-serious song treats about people who are from Mars and invade Earth, because 'they can't remember what the forest animals look like, what a farce !

Already road tested by the members of TVPC, this Caribbean-East European depth of a groove works perfectly in late night drunk sets.

On the B side Eddie C visits executive suite of a cruise ship with his extended, melancholic rework of 'Stoneczna Promenada'. The original tune is an old Polish cocktail-lounge classic from the late 70's, transformed here into a psychedelic story of epic proportions.

Moody loops evoke instant headnodding and added dub effects magnify the nostalgic, sunny vibe.

Nigel Wrench

Za86

CassetteTTW86
The Tapeworm
23.02.2015

A 25 year old radio reporter's personal journey in the final, most repressive moments of a hated regime. The last years of apartheid were the most brutal as a low-level civil war was battled out on the dusty streets of South Africa's black townships. Released on the 25th anniversary of the day Nelson Mandela walked to freedom, ZA86 is edited from nine tapes in the unique cassette archive of Turnstyle News, unlocked for the first time from a Cape Town cellar. It takes the listener to a violent world with moments of great beauty. The reporter, far from being edited out, is very much present, as are the thumps and bumps he hears in his headphones. From a May Day call to arms by Winnie Mandela to the extreme views of white right wingers; from 19 year old platoon leaders to the aftermath of an attack by police and soldiers in Soweto; from the words of envoy Terry Waite to the funeral of a television cameraman and the Band Aid-like pop song released by the apartheid regime, ZA86 unflinchingly documents the disturbing reality of 1986 in South Africa. A journey into the heart of apartheid.

V/a - It's Jamaica Jump Blues Time! Jamaican Sound System Classics 1941-1962

28

Well, no one can accuse us of rushing things: it's been a year since Jump Blues Jamaica Way became the third volume in our Jamaican Sound System Classics series, but here at long last is the fourth instalment. It's Jamaica Jump Blues Time! is available as both an 84-track 3CD selection and also a 28-track 2LP vinyl collector's edition. These will be of equal interest to both Jamaican music fans and connoisseurs of classic US rhythm & blues. Since Fantastic Voyage released Jumping The Shuffle Blues back in 2011, each successive volume in the series has been eagerly awaited by lovers of the music, some of whom have even suggested tracks for the consideration of compiler and annotator Phil Etgart.

Over the last twelve months Phil has been busy researching what records were favoured by the Jamaican sound systems. This is no easy matter, considering that many had their labels scratched out and were retitled by DJs keen to preserve their 'exclusives', meaning that they were known on the island by their sound system titles. This is the music that provided the inspiration for Ska and all that followed. So enjoy sound system favourites by Louis Jordan, Joe Liggins, Wynonie Harris, Fats Domino, Lowell Fulson, Roy Milton and a host of other names, both famous and obscure. Maybe we'll do it all over again sometime, but you can't hurry a good thing!
