Mr. Perry I presume kicks off with the over looked 12' version of George Faiths 'Don't be afraid'. Left off the classic 'Super 8' LP that George Faith recorded at the Black Ark.
It's slightly rougher around the edges than most of the material on that album. A nice opener to an eclectic set.Perry aficionados will be interested in the original vocal that Joy White cut before
Scratch used Susan Cadogen to re-voice the song and also her duet with Bunny Rugs that never made it onto her album. There's Perry returning to 'Words' - that is also featured in accapella style. But it's best to let the tracks speak of a creative mind in full flow.
The album comes with an unusual cover photo that was taken by the actress Nathalie Delon (then partner of actor Alain Delon) who was on a visit to the Black Ark studios in the mid 1970s.
The sleeve notes by Jeremy Collingwood focus on the UK sound system scene that Perry had become such an integral part of. His trips to the UK were frequent and he was
amongst the small group of Jamaican producers that pioneered the development of Jamaican music in the UK. These trips were both profitable (cutting dub plates) and useful for picking up musical ideas to take back to Jamaica.
Most of the material on Mr. Perry I presume is previously unreleased. An excellent addition to the previous Lee Perry albums on Pressure Sounds. As we continue to plug the gaps of one of the most innovative producers in popular music

The MC's hype heard right after the riff interprets the excitement of the session and creates a great atmosphere. Matching the original release, backed with a prime Jamaican Soul by talented Busty Brown who later recorded with Lee Perry.

The Celestials trademarked imminent sound can be heard in this elegiac killer Ska instrumental!! The bang on titled 'Golden Horns' representing the music itself. If they were ever based in Kingston, they may have had more opportunities for recordings which might have changed the history of Ska music. Such a great band indeed. Although it's still quite a tune, it may sound a little monotonous on the flip side, showing Thelwell's personal affection for Carlos Malcolm's band.

The number one guitarist of Reggae music and head of Soul Syndicate and High Times, Earl "China" Smith' Inna De Yard production introducing the new comer, Magma. Reproducing the Nyabinghi rhythm of Inna De Yard, known as the centre of the Rastafari culture, the sound and Magma's message directly express their life style and the strength hidden at the bottom of Roots music. This talented sing jay has been perfecting his craft from his pre teen age and have developed over the years to become today an important fixture in conscious reggae music. Born adam mayo in Warwick, Bermuda to a British father and a Bermudian mother. He was attracted as a youth to the teachings of emperor Haile Selassie and the Jamaican Rastafarian culture. "There are a lot of Rasta there, even though I didn't wear locks then I was always into the words of his majesty" he recalled. Absorbing the culture, led him to the music which have consumed him, providing for him the avenue to express his new Found consciousness he started performing live music in Bermuda learning his skill, doing the music he loves. At age 21 in 1989 he attended horticulture collage in Britain living in Surrey. Doing a year in collage and traveling to London, continuing his musical journey he started performing with leading sound system in Britain and become the permanent feature on the popular (Nation Vibration) sound system on which he performed all over London creating legions of fans who were drawn to his conscious lyrics and energized performances. In 2000 he performed in Glastonbury on the annually held (carnival collective) with a 30pice backing band and a number of reggae and multicultural performance on that festival his reputation as a serious conscious entertainer has been observed by many including executive of Reggae Sumfest who heard of is many performances and invited him to Jamaica to perform on Reggae Sumfest 2002 staging. He performed on international night one and created an instant impact. He then recorded with singer producer Paul Elliott in combination on the excellent track (build another bridge) witch connected him to the masses his electrifying performance at sting 2004 gave him much respect among the hardcore dance hall fans who were receptive to his conscious lyrics since 2004 he has been performing on the annual bob merely celebrations show in trench town, and have done work at Caveman...,studio. He has also recorded for top labels in Jamaica.. His releases on the Downsound label (Blowing Against The Wind) and (I Cry) are excellent pieces of music as he express on (I cry), is about his experience living in Jamaica at the time Tivoli Garden operation presently working with Inna de Yard movements headed by Earl Chinna Smith witch has seen him releasing the album (the mission) produced by earl Chinna Smith and Donovan Joseph, it contains material that his fans have become accustomed to hearing, conscious, uplifting, inspirational Rasta music. Patrons at the 2010(kite festival) in St. Ann were treated to a dynamic performance from this cultural artist who also ignited the large crowd at the Dennis Brown memorial concert in 2014 at the waterfront in Kingston. Presently promoting his new release (Emmanuel) witch reflects the singjays faith in the music and life. " It's a song about his faith because faith is all I know". The astonishing take of previously unpublished Rocksteady - reveals new facts about Studio One's Ska and Rocksteady! A few years after the Skatalites recorded the famous "Freedom Sounds", the band has reconstructed as the Soul Brothers and this is the astonishing, previously unpublished take of them playing the Rocksteady version. By the look of the master-tape, it has never even planned to be released as a single and kept especially for the LP release, which might have meant to be the Soul Brothers version of the Skatalites' iconic "Ska Authentic" album. This seriously rare recording is a must-check for everyone from the beginners of the Jamaican music to the Ska masters. Though as might be expected, we may never be able to measure the depth of the foundation studio.

The Wailers have recorded a number of tunes for Studio One, however this release still gets talked a lot as its specialty. Recorded just before they left Studio One, this double A-sided single includes two of the best tunes lead by Bunny Wailer himself. It's even possible to hear in this excellent music that the time has come to ripen for the band to see the vision of starting up their own Wail 'N' Soul 'M' label. Both sides are identical to its original release.

This VP Records / Greensleeves X Dub Store Records exclusive 7" release is a double A-sider by Clint Eastwood & General Saint. The A-side features one of the most popular 80's Dancehall classics and one of their biggest hit, Stop That Train, and AA-side features their another hit Monkey Man!

Dennis Manuel Brown belongs to that élite band of reggae artists who have succeeded in achieving true international stardom. Often hailed today as 'Bob Marley's favorite singer' Dennis Brown had managed not only to achieve elusive chart success with 'Money In My pocket' but has also regularly performed in the United Kingdom and Europe.



This album captures the artist at their peak of his performing ability during his considerable run of chart successes in 1979. He performed with the outstanding 'We The People' band made up of the cream of the Jamaican session world including Robbie Shakespeare, Sly Dunbar, and Lloyd Parkes. The tour was fraught with problems not least of which was the enormous financial burden on promoter and record company alike caused by the overheads involved in moving more than a dozen people throughout Europe and is probably best illustrated by the fact that every one of the musicians missed their flight from Kingston!



In the midst of this chaos the tranquility of Montreux and its superb annual festival was a welcome relief and became a special moment as these recording clearly show. Dennis played two shows that night sharing the bill with Peter Tosh and it was only too clear that Dennis Brown had arrived in the minds of the European audiences. The second show continued way into the night and ended with both artists and their musicians on stage together.

This album has captured the essence of those concerts and as such is a classic not only for reggae fans but for all contemporary music audiences.

Der berühmte Reggae-Schlagzeuger Lincoln Valentine Scott, besser bekannt als Style Scott, wurde
vergangenen Oktober im Alter von 58 Jahren in seinem Haus in Jamaika ermordet. Scott war Mitglied bei
Roots Radics und Dub Syndicate, außerdem trommelte er für Prince Far I, Bunny Wailer, Scientist und
Creation Rebel. Anlässlich seines Todes erscheint nun via Echo Beach die auf 999 Exemplare limitierte CD
"Dub Is All I Got". Hierbei handelt es sich um eine Remix-Kompilation, auf der die neue Generation dieses
alten Genres dem "König der Riddims" Tribut zollt. Zu Ehren von Style Scott zelebrieren ein gutes Dutzend
Remixer eine sensible Abschiedsfeier, die nicht würdiger sein könnte. Auf Basis des Dub-Syndicate-
Trademark-Sounds kollidieren dabei Drums, Hi-Hats und Snares mit dem rollenden Bass von Flabba Holt,
während sich harmonische Synth-Schlieren mit querschlagenden Echos vereinen. So entsteht ein vitales, in

Steppas Records presents Rooted & Grounded, the debut album from Alpha Steppa. The son and nephew of UK dub pioneers Alpha & Omega (Greensleeves/VP), Alpha Steppa has been surrounded by soundsystem and dubplate culture from a young age. Now a talented producer in his own right, his productions connect the dots between the music which he has grown up around and the new generation of UK bass music of which he is a part. His dubbed out style draws upon the sounds of his musical heritage, filtered through an exploration of the newer sounds of contemporary bass music. * I Roy (Roy Reid) The Godfather LP is the next album in a series of re-releases of rare and hard to find original 1970's Roots vocal, D.J. and Instrumental albums produced and arranged by Bunny 'Striker' Lee. This release features the ever popular DJ on hard Roots Bunny 'Striker Lee' produced and King Tubby mixed rhythms. The LP was originally released on the Uk Third World label in 1978 (TWS 930). All 10 tracks are in the original running order as the original release and are the original mixes. The album was recorded & mixed in Kingston (JA) (Details shown below). The album features many 'popular' Bunny 'Striker' Lee produced JA mid 1970's rhythms. The DJ's most prolific release is the album 'Presenting - I Roy' for producer Gussie Clarke, from the early 70's. The album is now considered to be a Reggae classic!.

When people think of Tough Gong they usually think of Bob Marley and rightly so, as he was nicknamed and often called Tough Gong and from this his early releases which came out on the Tough Gong label. But Tough Gong was also the name of a recording complex named after Bob Marley hat included a top level recording studio, pressing plant and distribution centre that would allow reggae music to carry on many years after his sad and too early demise.

Bob Marley had take over the former residence of Island Records boss Chris Blackwell the Island House, 56 Hope Road around 1974. Just before the 'Smile Jamaica' concert on 03rd December the same year the house was ambushed by gunmen. Bob's manager Don Taylor was hit 5 times AND Bob was shot in the arm and his wife Rita Marley was hit in the head by a stray bullet. How no one was fatally injured is staggering. Immediately after the concert Bob Marley started his self imposed exile from Jamaica, settling in London, England. This would lead to the aptly named exodus album being recorded there in the summer of 1977. It would not be until the 'One Love' peace concert in Kingston's national arena on the 22nd April 1978 that would see Bob's return to the island. Marley felt is was important to show his commitment to the people of Jamaica and on his return to 56 Hope Road he began construction of his own recording studio with the help of music mogul Tommy Cowen. Unfortunately Bob Marley's short life would end on the 11th May 1981 from cancer which originated form a football injury. His passing would lead to 56 Hope Road being turned into a museum to the legend of reggae music.

A new location would have to be found to carry on Bob's work which was 220 Marcus Garvey Drive, Kingston 11. The buyer would be Rita Marley and the Tough Gong International Organisation.

Engineers working at the new facility included Errol Browne who had worked at Treasure Isle studios and Hopeton Overton Browne known as 'Scientist', named by the great producer Bunny 'Striker' Lee who worked with him previously at King Tubbie's and Channel One's studios described his ground breaking style as being like that of a scientist.

We focus for this release on the work carried out by the great Scientist on the songs of the Black Solidarity Label run by Ossie Thomas (aka Joe The Boss) recorded at Tough Gong studios. One of the foremost recording, pressing and distribution facilities on the Jamaican island set up from the work of Bob Marley to carry forward reggae music. Hope you enjoy this set......

*Roots Survivor is a collection of Hard-Roots vocal tracks produced by Martin Campbell and co-arranged by Kendrick Andy. The basic rhythms were originally recorded at Channel One UK in the late 1980's/early to mid 1990's and most of the tracks featured in this particular collection were voiced during 1993. Although all featured tracks, bar 'Push Come To Shove', were not released until 2007, on the now deleted first release of the Roots Survivor album. (ACLARCD 01 & 10"LP ACLARLP 01-10). Throughout the album Kendrick continues his long-time lyrical tradition, where he focuses primarily on spiritual & political scenarios, over vintage 'Hi-Tech Roots Dynamics' rhythm work.

At this time, the Wailers band didn't play much of those sweet love songs, however this 7" definitely proves Familyman's versatile musical orientation. A truly tight rhythm section beautifully blends with this rather unknown singer's superb voice making these nothing but a masterpiece. A heart calming double-sider.

Following up on their well-received single "Only Now" featuring a remix with label mate Bosq, Warsaw Afrobeat Orchestra deliver a knockout debut album full of heavy Afro and island-inspired tunes. The album title Wëndelu means "Wanderer" in the native African Wolof language and is a fitting name for the album which explores the wide-range of sounds from the African diaspora and infused with their own traditional Polish folk, jazz and rock sensibilities. Tracks such as "No Such Thing","Let It Flow" and "Usurpation" reflect an obvious Reggae and Dub influence while the uptempo numbers on the album "Close To Far" and "Which Direction" veer towards Afro-Disco and Funk. Formed in 2012, the 10-piece band consists of musicians that have worked and collaborated with each other in different projects ranging from rock, jazz, folk, reggae and funk in the ever-evolving and musically diverse underground music scene in Poland. Inspired by the masters of Afrobeat, world music, as well as African tribal music which is evident in their lyrics and choruses that repeat and weave in and out of deep, hypnotic grooves infusing it with a transcendental quality. Be on the lookout for another 12in single from the album to drop soon featuring a remix from Tom Noble who's recent work includes a killer disco version of Myron and E's "Do It Do It Disco".

An unreleased track recorded for Jammy by the veteran Michael Rose who has been active at the forefront of reggae music since roots era to date. Just like his other hit tunes, the exceptional melody sense with tough yet sexy voice on remake of the ever glorious Yabby You's "King Pharaoh's Plague", naturally absorbs every listener from start.

One of the rarest, and greatest, horn instrumental dub albums of the seventies featuring the soaring saxophone of Tommy McCook in combination with Glen Brown, 'The Rhythm Master', is finally given a legitimate release.

The original title for this long playing release was initially advertised on the label of the seven inch release of 'Determination Skank' as 'The Sannic Sounds Tommy McCook', however the album was released in Kingston in 1974 in very limited quantities on a white label in a plain recycled cover rubber-stamped 'Tommy McCook Dub'. Three years later the set was released through Grounation in London, once again on a white label and without a cover, where it was known as 'Horny Dub'. It gave music lovers a fascinating opportunity to compare and contrast the work of Tommy McCook, one of the architects and builders of the Jamaican sound, with Glen Brown's role in taking and breaking it into pieces...,

Dub Store Records is the Ska, Rocksteady, Reggae, Roots and Dancehall reissue label run by the eponymous Tokyo based record store. The label aims at accurately covering the 50-plus years of Jamaican music, and pass on many rare and magnificent recordings, which are non-commercial and highly artistic. Carefully handing down the tradition of reggae music, Dub Store Records has so far issued recordings from labels and artists such as Studio One, Federal Records (Federal, Kentone, Merritone), Bunny Wailer's Solomonic, Familyman's Fam's, Jammys, King Tubby's Firehouse, Derrick Harriott, Kiddus I, Redman International, BMN and much more to come.

*A late 70's roots rockers instrumental from the London-based reggae band Investigators led by Michael Gordon who had a string of hits in the late 70's / early 80's on labels such as Fine Style (Fashion Records off-shoot) and Private Eye.
* Investigators were predominantly a Lovers Rock band, but occasionally wondered into more roots territory as heard on this 7' musical disc. The result being a heavyweight melodica-led instrumental, favoured in the late 70's by sound system legend Jah Shaka. This cut sounded not too dissimilar to the works of Augustus Pablo.
*Backed with a compulsory dub cut.
* This release will be welcomed by collectors of the genre, as the original 12" whence this came, changes hands for silly money.

It's Dub, but reverberating far beyond the genre's borders. It has a summer Reggae vibe, but doesn't sound like just another chapter of that good, old story. It's perfidiously dope, but at the same time extremely danceable. It has clever lyrics, but it's all about the sound. It's what JPattersson describes as PROGaDUB - because he's not from Jamaica, he's from East Germany. Inspired by heavyweight bass lines, bicycle rides and Caribbean riddims, by chocolate, vintage groovebox sounds and the carefree ruckus of kids playing on the street, the young talent delivers an album that is chiefly progressive and diverse. We Came In Peace' is build around dynamic chanting and passionate trumpet play. Ravers Dub' is a smooth melange of straight beats, mellow offbeat chords and the psychedelic echoes of a steel drum. The chorus of Turn Off Your Smartphone' invites to sing along, and Vagabond' is a dreamy interplay of hand-made music and synthetic groove. Some tracks come with a sublime hint of Balkan sound, some with an air of Jazz. In doing what felt right, JPattersson has successfully defined his very own genre: PROGaDUB.

At Africa Seven we are proud to present the third in our series of Manu Dibango re-issues. For your delight this time is 'Home Made', a 4 tracker of epic African musicianship. Recorded in 1979 the albums bedrock of Rhythms was recorded in Nigeria. This creates an infectious and addictive afrobeat groove for the album. Overdubs and mix downs were then carried out in Paris adding layers of sheen and expansive jazz groove. As the sleeve notes themselves note 'This album is dedicated to all brothers for a better vibration'.

Two essential sides from one of my favourite 70s vocalists, Leroy Hutson. His album "Hutson II" has never been out my DJ bag in 20 years, I'm on my third copy. For the A Side 'I Think I'm Falling in Love' was the obvious choice, a feel-good anthem of the highest order and weapon of choice for the climax of a good night (Note there is an O.G of this 45 but it's very tricky). For the flip 'Love to Hold You Close' is a slightly more subtle feel-good floater on 45 for the first time. It always drove me wild there is a long fade on the last 3rdof the track and nobody has ever bothered to sort this out, Obviously at AOTN we know the score and always do things the right way, so we went back to the masters and sorted it out, it can be enjoyed all the way through to the last floaty bar. Essential 70s soul.

Elswhere Flavia sings of both the beauty and the dangers of Brazil; she pays tribute the street artsts
and workers of the favelas and of the solidarity between expats. With a stellar cast of guests that
include German superstar Patrice, cult rapper Speech (Arrested Development), accordionist Fixi of Java
and the legendary drummer Tony Allen, Flavia builds new aural textures on the memory and culture of
Brazilian music.

Orchestre du Montplaisant are a worldly troupe, who display the intrepidness and roaming interests of true explorers. The band's sound can be defined in its diversity, ranging from a darker form of mystic exotica to the sun-kissed soundtrack to some future film set on the shores of a faraway island. Their new record defiantly combines the authentic sounds of fuzzy 70s high-life, the sensual sway of oriental Arabiana and a trippy Cumbia track of the sweltering kind, a kin to that of The Meridian Brothers. The charm of this LP lies in the band's ubiquitous authenticity. These songs could so easily be the standards, which you would otherwise hear covered and re-covered from generation to generation in their native countries. The record is awash with guest vocals, bouncing carnival beats and vintage organ solos, inviting you to close your eyes and imagine the sunbeams reflecting off the ice-cubes in your glass, while your feet carry you away, across the sand. The band have significantly evolved their outernational sound since their first release and have recorded two sessions for Cerys Matthews on BBC 6 Music, as well as enjoying regular plays on different BBC Radio shows, including Tom Ravenscroft's.

Just in tme for Summer, Wrongtom emerges with a new vinyl EP on Tru Thoughts to take over the airwaves and sound systems across the festval season and beyond. Out on 12' vinyl in a full colour sleeve with an eerie, ouija board-inspired theme, the Possessed EP' contnues in the spirit of his series of 'Wrongtom Meets' projects, boastng collaboratons with Tippa Irie, JC Lodge, The Ragga Twins, Desta Zion, The Correctonal Horns and Deemas J as well as a bonus cut from his long-standing live reggae/dub collectve the Stoneleigh Mountain Rockers.
The Possessed EP' uses the killer rhythm from 'In East London' track Suzy Hangs Out', this inspired move sprang from a chat about beats with Mark Professor, who happened to pass the rhythm on to reggae singer JC Lodge 's husband Errol, who passed it on to JC. Oblivious to all this, Wrongtom was then contacted out of the blue a while later with the beautful Possession', showcasing the talent of the revered singer who was signed to Tommy Boy records back in the day and collaborated with Shabba Ranks and many others. So, with that brilliant track suddenly in my hand, I thought maybe I should get a few diferent people on this rhythm and do what the classic reggae producers did', says Wrongtom: release a set of versions'.
Wrongtom signed to Tru Thoughts in 2013, releasing the 'In East London' album under the Wrongtom Meets Deemas J collaboratve name, which brought praise from all corners for its uplifing and celebratory yet down and dirty, vintage dub-infused sound. The tastemakers who lined up to heap praise on the album ranged from The Quietus, The Wire and FACT to Record Collector, MOJO, Q, Clash and beyond.
