ohn Holt has one of the finest and most versatile voices to come out of Jamaica.Whether fronting the great vocal group 'The Paragons' which he joined around 1965,singing many of their greatest hits including'Tide is High','On the Beach','Wear You to the Ball' to name but a few or his extensive solo career.A career that saw him covering every musical style from Pop,Lovers,Soul and his much overlooked Roots period.

John Holt (b.1947,Kingston,Jamaica) was a child prodigy he began his career being a regular voice on talent contests run by Vera Johns across the Jamaican Island.He cut his first single in 1963 for Leslie Kong's Beverly's label,'I Cried a Tear/Forever I'll Stay' and sang many duets with various singers of the day including 'Rum Bumper' with Aton Ellis.
In 1965 to 1970 as stated above was John Holts Paragon years in a period which he also ran solo with hits such as 'Fancy Make Up','A Love I Can Feel' and 'Lets Build Our Dreams'.
For this release we are looking at his extremely productive period working with Bunny'Striker'Lee.This reissue of John Holts classic1976 album 'Before The Next Tear Drop' is an album filled with classic after classic sung by Mr.Holt effortlessly.....

Hungary may be a small country but it punches above its weight when it comes to the funk!

Formerly of the Eastern bloc, the cultural and musical heritage of this part of Europe is every bit as rich the likes of West Africa and as such it is a melting pot bubbling with rhythms and influences. Now imagine, if you will, some of this Eastern European brew sprinkled with a little bit of afro spice and then blended with a massive dose of classic heavyweight Stateside funk and you'll have some idea of what Dokkerman & The Turkeying Fellaz (D&TTF) are all about.

The nine piece band, lead by drummer Peter Zimon, contains a tight rhythm section, a tight horn section and the ability to lay down a bad-ass groove - which collectively results in a raw and dirty old-school sound that recalls the funky golden era of the '60s and '70s. And yet the band also has that which differentiates it from the likes of Ikebe Shakedown or the Menahan Street Band in singer Gabor "The Flame" Hoffer whose chants offer added Magyar rawness.

In short, D&TTF breathe new life into vintage funk and trashy garage rock underpinning everything with afro-funk rhythms in a unique addition to the contemporary scene that's guaranteed to make you move. In fact it's so danceable it should be made illegal.

Some of the highlights of Feeling Nice Volume 3 are one of the rarest 45s on the Alston label and in our opinion also one of the best, Clarence Reid's "I Get My Kicks". A James Brown influenced wah wah funk monster, 'Stand-Up Baby' by Canada's Saint John. 'The Jack Mod Kick' by Jake, Ricky and Jack Townshend AKA Jack & The Mods, ranging in age from 6 to 18 and discovered almost accidentally while rehearsing in a rundown shack in rural Virgina! We've got Rickey Andrews taking us on a late 60s dance-move tour of the U.S. with 'Chances Are Your Dance is Mine'. A rare sister funk masterpiece called 'Leave Me Alone' by Nadine Brown from 1977. Leroy & The Drivers' critical track, 'The Sad Chicken', produced in under 30 minutes with their last remaining studio time in 1970 and still ringing loud across the land. One of the nastiest versions of The Iselys' 'It's Your Thing' coming out of Jamaica and so much more!

* After a full studio refurbishment, during 2014, Alien Dread is now back in operation and returns with the second of the new releases for 2015, with a special instrumental project, featuring top Jamaican musicians Alvin Davis & Asha Barnes.

The CD features as a basis for the tracks, a fully adapted part of the main theme from the 1971 UK movie: Get Carter, under the French film title, "La Loi Du Milieu". All tracks feature new and original instrumentation and arrangements from Alien Dread, Alvin Davis & Asha Barnes. The CD features 5 tracks, Hornz & Flute Versions from Alvin Davis, Conga version from Asha Barnes and respective Dub and ambient versions from Alien Dread. Also available is the first of the new Alien Dread instrumental Reggae releases, 'Abyssinia' a 4 track 7" Vinyl EP. (IRON SOUND IRONEP 01-07). The A side features Alvin Davis on Hornz. The B side has a Flute version on the same rhythm and features Italian Hornzman DannyG on Flute. Both A & B sides feature respective Dub versions, mixed by Alien Dread.

Phillip Smart was one of the great engineers to learn his trade as understudy to the legendary dub master himself Osbourne'King Tubby'Ruddock.
Alongside other luminaires such as Prince Jammy and Scientist,Phillip Smart would step in at the controls when demand for King Tubby studio dubs grew to such an extent that each single release was expected to carry a version/dub flipside.
Phillip Smart moved to the United States in the late 70's and in 1981 opened his successful studio HC&F,Long Island,New York.It produced some sizeable Jamaican Dancehall hits for his two record labels TanYah and Eclipse.
Tracks like Dirtsman's 'Hot This Year' and 'Rikers Island' and most notably artist Shaggy used the studio to work up his massive hits 'Oh Carolina','Big Up' and 'Angel'.
But it's in the heady days of the early 1970's and up to 1976 that we concentrate on for this release.When Version was King and Prince Phillip Smart was at the controls mixing up some fine dubs with Jamaica's finest musicians The Aggrovators.

Alpha Steppa was born into a climate of dub, when he first opened his eyes and ears in the late 1980's he witnessed a family submerged in dub reggae music, his dad made dub, his auntie made dub, his uncle made dub and his mum listened to dub in the kitchen. 28 years later, his debut album Rooted & Grounded stands testament to a life spent in dub and tells the story of Alpha Steppa. Featuring the profoundly soulful vocals of Kiangana, this single, exclusive to the 7', acts as a firm statement of intent. Diverse and forward thinking dub music with a deep roots foundation.

Opening on, a very old school 140 BPM jungle sound, this EP then goes to Ragga Jungle, Dubstep Jungle and... DUB with Mungo's HiFi and even kind of diodgy techno dub stepper clubby for the last tune:) Full Fun EP

Things That Grow is a fluid musical project exploring the sonic possibilities of southern African musical bows within improvisatory contexts. On this album, Cara Stacey performs contemporary compositions and improvisations on the umrhubhe and uhadi bows with Shabaka Hutchings (clarinet, tenor saxophone), Seb Rochford (drums), Ruth Goller (bass), Crewdson (concertronica), and Dan Leavers (synths/production). Combining original compositions by Cara and Shabaka, as well as freely conceived improvisations, this recording aims to stretch the boundaries of bow music in an ensemble and create something entirely new.

Cara is a South African multi-instrumentalist, composer and researcher. She is a pianist and plays different southern African musical bows (umrhubhe, uhadi, makhoyane). Cara holds a BMus in musicology from the University of Cape Town, an MMus in musicology from Edinburgh University, and an MMus in musical performance from SOAS (London). Cara is currently completing her doctoral research through the South African College of Music (UCT) and SOAS, specialising in the makhoyane braced-bow of Swaziland. A founding member of Inclement Quartet and Pergola, she has performed in numerous ensembles in South Africa, England, and Scotland. She is based between London, Cape Town, and Mbabane.

Jo Bisso was born and raised in Yaounde, the political capital Cameroon. He grew up being a fan of American soul music such as Otis Reading and Wilson picket. In 1971 he left Cameroun to pursue his musical career. Beginning an 8 year stint of Paris to New York jet trips the young ambitious man forged his musical career on his own terms, Staring off with the minor hit "Flying To The Land Of Soul" which he signed to Decca and moving on to produce, finance, write and create several albums released under his own name and other artsits such as Sookie and Venise.

In 1975 Jo created his genre blended debut album "Jo Tongo" on the Paris based Disques Esperance label. Sung in English and his native language it was way ahead of its time for the day, blending Jazz, Funk, Soul, afro rhythms and the sounds that were at the time being come to be known as Disco. The album was produced by Jo who plays a wide variety of the instruements and contributes his baritone "Barry White" tinged spoken vocals about life and love.

The album opens up with the title track "Dance To It", A slice of groovy lounge-funk. Part 1 is all about the driving catchy groove which is layered with a downtown funk saxophone lead line. Part 2 brings in Jo's spoken vocals in his native language and English, setting the tone of the album to come. "Disco Madonna" introduces a Latin flavour with Spanish vocals, a rumba groove and darting percussion. "Ramaya" melds a playful, summery, euro melody with Jo's throaty, fun-loving vocals and a nascent use of synthesizers.

"Lets Keep It Together" is a song in two parts. The first half builds the groove over washy guitar, and chords before breaking into a solid soul riff with bass, Rhodes and guitar. Over this Jo layers the catchy, soulful vocals, summer-breeze guitars and jazzy keys. A real treat. Flip over to the Vinyl B side for what is probably the albums most "getting down" moment. The driving funk of "Give It Up". Stabby brass, whirling organ and tight bass which is all wrapped up in a one tight arrangement. Add in doses of Jo's sulty vocal and that is a recipe for a real winner.

"Don't Fight The Feeling" again furthers into real deep funk territory. Jo opening up with a sermon on "love and sex". The album closes with the swinging soul of the pensive Jo and his thoughts on life, "Odwa". What is going down

The Give It Up track was a highlight of the recent Africa Seven debut release "African Airways Volume 1: (Funk Connection 1972-1979). To Follow that up Africa Seven are proud to repress the debut Jo Bisso album in its full glory.

Jo moved back from the US in 1981. From 1981 to 1989 his lived in Cote D'Ivoire. He now lives in Paris and although he sometimes "finds it hard to listen to his albums", he does thinks it great that people love his music and his debut album is getting a re-release all these years later.

Long before his Hip Hop days with Phi-Life Cypher and in more recent years as a solo MC, Life's roots started out by flexing dancehall lyrics back in the late 80's on local Luton sound systems Falcon Sound, Freedom Sound and Sovereign Roadshow, a passion that has never left him and one he's returned to for this release.

Sound System pays homage to the singers, djs and sound systems from JA to UK he grew up listening to and took inspiration from in these early years, name checking a who's who of the international reggae fraternity from start to finish, riding a Hip Hop fused Reggae riddim produced by German based Macro Beats, neatly! It'll have you lifting up the needle and pulling the tune back one time, two times!

The flipside cut Rastaman Soldier is produced by Romanian based Lion Riddims, with Life once again coming correct with some wicked lyrics, double time stylee on a conscious tip, sure fire lick shots! Both tracks are mixed down by the don dada Nappa.

The UK's favourite funk/soul brothers release their long awaited third album "What Comes To Mind" worldwide on the 2nd Oct 2015. This one drops on their own independent record label Haggis Records and features a host of special guest artists including vocalists Lucinda Slim (Zap Mama), John McCallum (Corinne Bailey Rae band) and John Turrell (Smoove & Turrell) plus New mastersounds bass player Pete Shand and UK conga/percussion legend Snowboy.

The Haggis Horns first hit the music scene in 1999 as both a band and brass section, the Horns making their first recorded appearance on The New Mastersounds debut album that year. Featuring some of the finest brass and rhythm section players in the UK, Haggis Horns musicians have played live and recorded with a host of major music artists including Mark Ronson, Corinne Bailey Rae, Lou Donaldson, Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, Martha Reeves, Jamiroquai, John Legend & The Roots, The Cinematic Orchestra, Morcheeba, Roots Manuva, Finley Quaye and Nightmares On Wax.

With five singles on UK independent label First Word Records plus two albums ("Hot Damn!" in 2007 and "Keep On Movin'" in 2010), they released their first title on their own Haggis Records in summer 2015, the aptly titled "Return Of The Haggis EP".

"What Comes To Mind" is packed full of feelgood funk, soul and boogie that pays homage to the band's musical heroes of the 1970's - Kool & The Gang, Donald Byrd, The Blackbyrds, The Mizell Brothers & Earth Wind & Fire. There's plenty of dancefloor filling funk for the clubs - "Outta My Head", "It Ain't What You Got", "I Can't Stop The Feeling" - plus heavy funk instrumentals like "Return Of The Haggis" where the band get the chance to stretch out and cut loose on the solo sections. The New Mastersounds rank among the most preeminent modern soul and funk bands of their time. Having started out in Leeds, UK, the quartet tour the globe regularly, bringing their hard-charging, delectably greasy jams to all corners of the globe, to feed a hungry fan base that stretches from New York City to Tokyo, San Francisco to Amsterdam and all points in between. In 2015, they return with their tenth studio album "Made For Pleasure", their most sprawling and ambitious record to date.

The band's core four-guitarist Eddie Roberts, drummer Simon Allen, bassist Pete Shand and organist Joe Tatton-are joined on the 11-track effort by guests including super fabulous soul chanteuse Charly Lowry, revered percussionist/vibraphonist Mike Dillon and the North Cali-based West Coast Horns, featuring tenor saxophonist JoeCohen and trumpeter Mike Olmos.

Recorded in New Orleans, The New Mastersounds high-step through the humidity and heat leaving no soul or funk touchstone unturned. Both the title track and "High & Wide" are drenched in The-Meters-meet-Lee-Dorsey Big Easy funk, while tracks like "Enough Is Enough," "Joy" and "Just Gotta Run" are firmly rooted in classic soul sister rhythm & blues tradition, think Tina Turner, Ann Peebles, Bettye LaVette. Super-charged by Eddie Roberts' stinging guitar leads, "Cigar Time" and "Sitting On My Knees" take a decidedly soul-jazz turn, diving headlong into Grant Green grit and groove.

Capping off "Made For Pleasure" and further validating its title is a dubbed out reinvention of Iggy Azalea's smash hit "Fancy" that cleverly turns the pop artist's ode to materialism into a 21st century stoner anthem with the repurposed refrain, "I'm so irie."

The crown jewel of Koliphone Records, Grazia's debut album is by far one of the most intriguing pieces of music to ever be recorded in Israel.

Jaffa in the late sixties and early seventies had an exciting and exotic sound to offer, where folk musicians performed live at its taverns seven nights a week. It was far from the mainstream hit-parade of swinging Tel-Aviv but close enough geographically to attract listeners from across the Tel-Aviv-Jaffa metropolis. The scene got bigger and wilder as it embraced the Middle Eastern celebration style known as "Hafla", involving heavy drinking, local food and music of course.Standing at the center of old Jaffa and it's vibrant music scene was the record store and label, Koliphone Records. Owned by the Azoulay brothers, Koliphone tirelessly recorded these artists and sold their records to the growing masses. At first they released mostly Greek and Turkish music, shortly followed by Yemenite, Moroccan and Hebrew records, showcasing the cultural melting potof this ancient port town.

The biggest and most influential artist of the time was Aris San. A singer and guitar virtuoso, San created the Israeli-Greek style and introduced the drums-bass-guitar rock combo to folk audiences. His fans thought they were listening to traditional bouzouki melodies, but in fact San's music was a lot heavier, strongly influenced by american surf, verging on the psychedelic. San's huge popularity attracted many other artists to record the new style he had pioneered. Artists such as Trifonas, Levitros, Nino Nikolaidis and many more began to appear on Jaffa's record stands.

Among them was a young girl who sang in Turkish. Her name was Grazia Peretz.

Grazia was a wonder kid in the early seventies. She started singing at the age of nine, performing at Turkish weddings and Mediterranean nightclubs, sharing a stage with local legends such as Aris San and Trifonas. Soon enough, she became an in demand act for events up and down the country, eventually landing herself a weekly TV spot on the Channel 1 musicsegment.For her 16th birthday, her father sent her to record a full length "Hafla" style album at the Koliphone studios. Marko Bachar, who was the label's in-house producer, arranger and keyboard player, was in charge of the project. Bachar had just sold his organ and bought a monophonic Moog synthesizer. Hard funk drums, pounding bass coupled with synth blips and psychedelic Turkish guitars - well..., it was all a bit too much for the unsuspecting folk audience.

Grazia never made another album for Koliphone. At the age of 18, disheartened by the music industry and the undue touring environment she had to endure at such an early age, she stopped singing and never returned to the studio or the stage.All she left us was this amazing gem, which became one of the most sought after Israeli records of all times.

He developed a sincere devotion to classic Jamaican music at a young age, listening to such artists as Dave Barker, The Bleech- ers, The Wailers, Phyllis Dillon, and Alton Ellis. 'I wanted to make a record that was honest and true to the golden era of Jamaican music' says Thomas. After several conversations with reggae producer Brian Dixon, they both realized they were on the same page. Thomas showed up to Dixon's Volcano Lounge studio in Los Angeles a few weeks later ready to record. With Junior Thomas and Brian Dixon as the brainchildren and nucleus of the project, they began assembling the musicians now known as The Volcanos....
The Volcanos are a collective of Southern Californian musicians specializing in Reggae's late 60s early 70s sound. Members of the Volcanos have worked on projects with countless reggae legends, most notably Jimmy Cliff's 2012 Grammy award winning album 'Rebirth.' Other notable works include The Aggrolites debut 'Dirty Reggae' and 'The Aggrolites', Hepcat 'Push n' Shove' and 'Right on Time', Western Standard Time's debut 'A Big Band Tribute to the Skatalites' and Tim Armstrong's (Rancid) debut 'A Poet Life.'
