Various - Joshua Fit The Battle Of Jericho

Two super-nice early 60s versions of an age-old spiritual, here given a popcorn R&B feel, with a low tempo still prime for the dance floor, and vocals from some of the best voices in soul and R&B history - Jackie Wilson and Linda Hopkins on the top side, and Big Maybelle on the reverse. Both versions were previously only available on albums, making this handy pairing their 45rpm debut, and a great DJ tool.

Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath - Hand Of Doom / The Wizard

Brown Sabbath is the alter ego of Austin-based Brownout, delving into the catalog of the Hard Rock and Heavy Metal godfathers themselves Black Sabbath. "Hand Of Doom" featuring Black Angels singer Alex Maas on vocals is the lead-off single with "The Wizard" on the flip, pressed on limited colored splatter 10inch.

Remaining true to the darkness, bombast and fuzz of Sabbath's sound, Brownout reinvents the music with their trademark flavors of Latin-Funk and Psychedelic Rock. Powerful horns combined with Alex Maas' haunting vocals, funked-up drums and percussion transform Hand Of Doom into a Rock and Funk juggernaut that clocks in at almost 8 minutes long. On the flip Alex Marrero takes his turn on the vocals and channels his inner Ozzy Osbourne with the band's full horn section taking place of the harmonica in the original and once again adding funky sensibility and Latin flourishes to make it their own.

Look for the full-length Brownout presents "Brown Sabbath" LP to drop early Summer 2014.

Darondo - Didn't I Edits Ep

Darondo

Didn't I Edits Ep

UBIQUITY
07.07.2014

With Darondo's sudden and unexpected passing last year, the world truly lost a singular and unique talent. "Didn't I" was undoubtedly his most beloved and well-known song making the rounds in Soul collectors' circles for some time and reaching a much wider audience with numerous placements on TV and movies including the iconic show "Breaking Bad."

Three producers from across the globe have paid him homage by adding their touches and flavor to the classic tune. French producer GUTS remix was previously included on a limited double 7in EP called "Brand New Revolution". His take on the tune became a summer time favorite with it's laid back groove and Darondo's emotion-tinged vocals layered on top. Florent F also from France, adds some heavier live drums to create a harder-hitting version on his mix. Hailing from Montreal, Canada, noted edit and remix producer Dave Allison's version picks up the tempo, highlighting the groovier elements of the track transforming the soul tune to a dancefloor mover.

The Impellers - The Last Dance Of The Moai/ Veeber

Here we have a new great funk 45 by The Impellers.

"Last Dance of The Moai" is the A side. It is also featured on the debut album "Robot Legs", but the band felt there was more in it than they previously got out of it: "We started playing it live again recently with a new drummer and bass player and somehow that gave it a whole new life. It went from being a song we never played to being the song we end our live sets with. The new bass groove really brought it back to life. Oh, and it's kind of a protest song too. The Moai are the big head statues on Easter Island. The song is about us destroying our planet and why that's probably not a good thing to do."

The B-side, "Veeber" is a great midtempo funk instrumental. Deep and raw as well as thoughtful and skilled. A great party starter with a big beat, great guitar workout, heavy horns and dirty percussion.

Or like Glenn Fallows of The Impellers said: "Too much funk written these days is so clean, polished and rehearsed. We wanted something that flies in the face of all that and something that could match any deep funk 45 from the early 70s."

Various - The Story Of Lenis Guess

One of the most celebrated musicians who contributed to "The Norfolk Sound" was multi-talented singer, songwriter, producer, arranger, and label owner Lenis Guess. Born on February 27th, 1940, Lenis was entertaining his family at an early age. By the time he was seventeen he joined a vocal group called the Blue Beards and started entering talent shows. Inspired by his talent show success, he decided to pursue a recording career.

In 1966 he signed a contract to record his first release with Frank Guida. The single, "Working For My Baby" b/w "Just Ask Me" (SPQR 1002) would become the record that really launched the long career of Lenis. He would oversee Guida's operation for the following three years and continued releasing 45s on Guida's many labels. In 1969 he founded D.P.G. Records along with Kenneth Deal, a recording artist and George Perkins, a club owner. Tragically, Kenneth Deal was killed in a car accident shortly after releasing "What Have You Heard" b/w "Clown Suit" (D.P.G. 1006) under his stage name Terry Sinclair. Guess and Perkins continued releasing 45s of local talent though, most notably Sir Guy & his Rocking Cavaliers.

In 1970, after Perkins and Guess parted over artistic differences, Lenis and gifted engineer Dorsey "Brock" Brockington opened up their own recording studio, Brockington & Guess, in Norfolk, Virginia. They had an in-house band called Raw Soul which consisted of Barry Saunders (guitar), Maurice Glass (bass) and Grover "Groove" Everett (drums). All three were still teenagers at the time the group was assembled. The three matured into a tight unit and started backing some of Virginia's finest vocalists including Barbara Stant, Lee Fields, Debbie Taylor, Shirley Johnson, and many more.

Yasuko Agawa - L.a. Nights

Yasuko Agawa

L.a. Nights

12inchBRT26
25.03.2013

Limited reissue of Japanese singer Yasuko Agawa's stunning jazz-funk classic L.A. Nights. Created as an answer record to Light of the World's massive 1980 anthem London Town by the same writer/producer of the original - Augie Johnson, this laid-back groover championing the delights of L.A. became huge on the jazz-funk scene in its own right and deservedly so. Augie's fresh production keeps all the funk of LOTW's version with a killer bass, cool vibes and tight percussion but Yasuko brings a lighter ethereal feel with her smooth other-worldly vocal delivery. One of two Japanese album tracks plucked for 12' release by iconic UK soul/funk label Bluebird, this is backed with the more jazzy but equally sweet New York Afternoon. Great release!

Odessey And Oracle - Sing Our Song

Odessey And Oracle is a labour of love. A few years in the making and a couple of Legère Recordings releases later Paul Elliott and Jamie Lawrence aka JetTricks plus Mr. Mellow and Pete Rivera finally made it into the studio to cut their very first sun-drenched, joyful and forward thinking blue-eyed soul tune.

"Sing Our Song" has already been released in its electronic disguise on Rivera Rotation's "Horsley Park" album and got to #1 on the Beaport Electronica charts, but this is the original version. Merging late Sixties British psych pop with a smiling mid Seventies Laurel Canyon groove, while adding an up-to-date pop flavour plus an irresistible chorus, "Sing Our Song" arrives in time for summer.

"Sing Our Song" is released on 7inch vinyl and digital download on Legere Recordings.

Orlando Julius - James Brown Ride On / Psychedelic Afro Shop

The second limited edition 10 inch on the Mukatsuku label is from legendary Nigerian musician Orlando Julius who begun in the 1960's fusing traditional African sounds and rhythms with those of American Soul & R & B. This single as a 10 inch includes two of perhaps his best funk tracks ' James Brown Rides On' flipped with 'Psychedelic Afro Shop' with tough brass stabs, driving bass lines and irresistible, tough afro beat drums. We struggled to get hold of a mint original copy of the original 45 and when we did it was in an overly played condition coming from the collection of digger & DJ , Huw 72. We took the vinyl to Sean P known for his excellent sound restoration skills who begun painstakingly working with the files to bring the vinyl playback to something close of it's original audio quality. It was a tough job. The original 7 inch bizarrely had both sides cut at 45rpm but both A & B sides ran to 6 and half minutes each which is extremely difficult to achieve when you consider that the original 45 was so damn loud. It's worth noting that African pressings in general are often of a certain noisy quality. I've had sealed African records before that have never been played but sound like someone is frying eggs in the background when the needle hits the record !

Laura Vane & The Vipertones - Bodyquake (lp+mp3)

an you feel it There's a rumble in your ears, a tremble in your knees, the world as you've known it is about to split, swallow you up whole and spit you out! Then, and only then, you will know you've heard 'BodyQuake' the long awaited and eagerly anticipated third album from Laura Vane and The Vipertones!

It may seem like a long time since Laura and the guys took to the stage, but rest assured that they've been focusing all their efforts in the studio to create a new, hot and exciting sound! This album and indeed the band, have been on a journey for the past 18 months, peering through various windows, stretching into different spaces and smashing together diverse flavours in order to bring you what we all believe to be, the best of their song writing in 2014. The album struts about with all kinds of instrumentation from hard electric guitar and dirty synth bass lines to delicate emotional strings and infectious hooky harmonica. With dance grooves to sustain the heat and ballads to cool you off gently, this album puts ticks in all the boxes!

We are also pleased to announce that they have been blessed with very special guest vocalist on one of their new songs. The very talented Jono McCleery with his super soulful and distinctive tone, joins Laura for a duet and brings a sharp burst of contrast and beautiful harmony to the album.

Inspirations for the album were delivered by Aretha Franklin, Elle Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, Lewis Taylor, Carleen Anderson, Kelis, Michael Jackson , Annie Lennox , Jamiroquai... quite the arsenal of talent, eh

Laura Vane & The Vipertones are looking forward to playing plenty of shows in 2014 and making a lot of noise! Those of you that have seen them perform in the past might notice a difference on stage as they've shrunk themselves down to a tidy and powerful 5 piece. Remember to keep checking out their live listings.

GET ON DOWN
23.06.2014

When Bobby Brown left New Edition at the peak of their fame in 1986 he was staying true to his rules of 'really not giving a damn' and doing what felt right to him. And while his solo debut King of Stage (1986) wasn't bad, it wasn't what fans were really yearning for - 'Hopefully he just goes back to New Edition' one fan wrote in a 1987 issue of Word Up! Magazine. Little did we all know by the time King of Stage was dying down he was already hard at work on the follow up, Don't Be Cruel, and no one was even prepared for what was coming. Don't Be Cruel immediately was a smash hit, to any naysayers this was the punch in the face, to NE fans this was a game changer, and honestly to many this was their first time even hearing him. Don't Be Cruel crafted the perfect match of amazing songwriting and the newly christened New Jack Swing sound that was flooding the streets. Bobby Brown proved why he was 'good to go solo' as he owned each track on this album. The new 'King of R&B' was here. The albums singles: 'Don't Be Cruel', 'My Perogative', 'Every Little Step' & 'Roni' all were number 1 singles. 'Rock Wit'cha' made all other R&B ballads at the time pale in comparison. The album was one of the best selling albums of the 80's (33 to be exact). Don't Be Cruel over-exceeded what any R&B fan would expect. The albums producers L.A Reid, Babyface and Teddy Riley all did outstanding work channeling the right mix for Brown to finally take center stage. And after 20 + years this album still has a strong hold as the R&B blueprint for making hit albums.

Dirty Science
23.06.2014

Following his collaboration with Blu on (Blu and Exile's) Give Me My Flowers While I Can Still Smell Them, Exile Teams Up with Johaz. another fresh voice from Cali under the monicker DAG SAVAGE. The album features appearances by the Dirty Science Family Blu, Aloe Blacc, Fashawn, Co$$, Choosey and more. With beats produced By Exile who has been making classics for the westcoast for a minute, from Blu & Exile's 'Below the heavens' to Fashawn's 'Boy meets World.' Now for his next classic, the debut album 'E & J' by Dag Savage. Exile was raised into music, something that began generations ago in his family. Through rudimentary beat machines, turntables and instruments, Aleksander Manfredi found his niche and spent years honing it. His journey took him all over southern California's underground scene and it was at one of these shows in the early 2000's that he first met a young, hungry MC by the name of Johaz. Cultured by experience, Johaz grew up both in East San Diego County and Tijuana, Mexico. Life was definitely not easy for a young Black boy living in Tijuana and crossing the border everyday to go to school in SD. He returned to the states full time as a teen but the wise and intelligent young man had developed a belligerent streak. Though he was too young to get into local
clubs normally, Johaz infiltrated the scene as a dancer, hopping on the mic once he'd finished a routine. This inevitably led to an encounter with the Masters of the Universe crew and after proving his worth through battle and realizing he was kin with Sumach aka Gonjasufi, Johaz became an extended member of the collective. He didn't record much with them though, aesthetically Johaz was a bit different than everyone else at the time. Johaz's flow was a bit more deliberate, his lyrics painstakingly honest and unabashedly raw. It wasn't until his dance crew Urban Dynamics grew into the hip-hop group Deep Rooted that Johaz began to find a home for his gravely flow. It was his Urban Dynamics brethren that brought Johaz out that fateful night when he met Exile. Johaz immediately made an impression on Ex through his ferocity on the mic and his hunger and humility as a person. He was quickly invited to the studio where he began cutting tracks with Exile and the idea of an extensive collaboration began to brew. Soon it became apparent that the chemistry was unique and the duo spent the next several years chiseling away, crafting their unique blend of hip-hop.

Little Johnny Taylor - Somewhere Down The Line / What You Need Is A Ball

Somewhere Down The Line' has been a huge mod / R&B essential spin for many years now, and it's not hard to see why. With it's bluesy harmonica and guitar riff married up to a full, swinging horn section, the production perfectly encapsulates the developing early 60s sound, where blues and R&B eventually gave way to soul. Little Johnny Taylor was the perfect exponent of this sound too, a singer who came of adult age himself in the early 60s, obviously inspired by the blues sounds of his early childhood, but contemporary to the singers who were inspiring the new genre shift at the time. The b-side 'What You Need Is A Ball' is perhaps closer still to a pure soul sound, but still with that earthy blues backbone and groove which proves so tough to stay still to.

Ministry Of Sound - R&b Mixtape

30

R&B Mixtape is a fresh take on R&B. Disc 1 is a journey through some of the new sounds coming from young up and coming talent on the scene whilst Disc 2 hones in on R&B's significance in dance music today and how R&B remixes and dance tracks with R&B vocal cuts are becoming increasingly popular. The album pushes the boundary of how we might define contemporary R&B; many use the label 'R&B' for commercial mainstream pop whilst others see it as original rhythm and blues. R&B Mixtape presents another side to the genre.

Disc 1 features the likes of Robin Thicke, Javeon, Banks, Drake, Bipolar Sunshine and more whilst Disc 2 includes R&B inspired dance tracks such as Jazzanova & Ben Westbeech, Le Youth, Duke Dumont as well as remixes of Rihanna, Wretch 32, Naughty Boy, Emeli Sande and Kelis.

R&B Mixtape is the first album of its kind and demonstrated the ever increasing relationship between dance music and R&B.

The Mr. K Edits - Baby Doll / Heavy Vibes

hand stamped 12"
In a world where the internet overflows with the bedroom edits of thousands of would-be's and never-have's, it is worth remembering that there was a time, not so very long ago, when the edit block was an exclusive territory that only true disciples could enter. Danny Krivit is a bonafide master of the realm whose career dates to the dawn of disco edits and is dotted throughout with dancefloor classics. Unlike many online editors, Mr. K always was, and still is, a DJ first. "Danny," it was recently overheard in a downtown basement club, "is the only guy who can take a great song and make it better, and a so-so song and make it great." As evidence of that axiom, Most Excellent Unltd. is pleased to present two battle-tested staples from DK's repertoire, the first 12-inch single in an ongoing series.

Girls Can't Help It was a prefab group with a cheesy image but a surprisingly slinky electro funk sound. Danny's edit of the Mark Kamins remix of "Baby Doll" turns a minor '80s pop tune into a low-slung balearic cruiser, borrowing freely from the more dubby elements of the original for a perfect mid-tempo warmer.

The Montana Sextet's "Heavy Vibes" is a Loft classic that runs like a looser, funkier version of "Love Break," which Danny immortalized in his beloved "Love Is The Message" rework. Mr. K's "Fan Dance Edit" takes an obscure 7-inch-only alternate version of the track (the "Fan Dance" mix) and teases it into a steadily building groove that leans back towards "Love Is The Message" and will find a ready home in any DJs bag.

Both tracks have been mastered from Danny's personal collection and pressed onto high-quality virgin vinyl in extremely limited quantities.

Lack Of Afro - Music For Adverts

A Wide ranging, eclectic and progressive musical outlook has always been the Lack of Afro approach. His latest material follows suit as he harnesses disparate musical styles ranging from funk, soul and hip-hop to create a contemporary yet vintage musical escapade of superb songs.

On his 4th studio album for Freestyle Records, the influences, sounds and musical textures are more eclectic than ever. Below, Adam talks us through some of the his favourite moments on 'Music For Adverts'.

First out of the box is the steaming funk killer Freedom: This time around I knew I didn't want an intro or a skit to start the album - I needed a strong, heavy opener - I had the melody for the chorus floating around in my head. It was then just a case of working with Jack Tyson - Charles on the rest of it and getting the vibe that the song required.

Long time Lack Of Afro collaborator Herbal T features on Brown Sugar: I had an idea of doing a disco track with an emcee on it, which you don't really hear often. This is actually the first time I've sung on a Lack of Afro track, adding my backing vocal warblings on the choruses! Special shout to George Cooper for the howlin' Hammond solo at the end too.

Of the gritty instrumental No Guts, No Glory Adam explains: I wanted to include 3 instrumentals as I always have a soft spot for them & it's what people know me for. The 'choir' was recorded by layering up my own voice in different octaves, nothing is auto-tuned, its all real. The studio allows me to do stuff like that but I could never sing live - I'll leave that to the proper vocalists.

'Proper vocalist' Jack Tyson - Charles again features on The Gypsy, which as Adam explains uses the classic song format to great effect: One of my favourite LOA tunes to date, Its in keeping with the album mission statement of wanting to write 'proper songs' instead of just grooves.

Myron & E With The Soul Investigators - Everyday Love 7"

Following the acclaimed "Broadway" album by Myron & E on Stones Throw, Timmion picks two mid tempo treats from it for a new 7" release. "If I Gave You My Love" and "Everyday Love" sit firmly between classic soul and hip hop aesthetics, painting vivid pictures of bitter sweet love quests on one side and positive testifying on the other. On both tunes, The Soul Investigators cruise effortlessly through a funk drenched terrain to offer firm backing for the duo's soulful vocal dynamics.

Chocolate Snow - Inflation

From Kansas City, deep in the American Midwest, Chocolate Snow were to be Wichita's answer to Earth, Wind & Fire or Sly & the Family Stone. The flamboyantly-dressed multi-ethnic band courted controversy on and off the stage, often resulting in being chased out of many towns and cities. On one of their hectic tours label boss Dick Smart approached them to record for Solo Records. Their release (A take on the Wes Montgomery version of the Beatles 'A Day In The Life') broke new ground, yielding an almost unrecognisable take on Lennon & McCartney classic, but the 45 stiffed. After a move to Los Angeles, they recorded the track again for a local label, but this time with a vocal on top and entitled 'Inflation'. Whilst it never made it to release it was unearthed recently by Numero Group. Deep, deep music, way ahead of its time, destined for the discerning ears of today, and presented here for the first time on 45 as the 'A' side of this beautiful deep soulful gem.
