For the first time in a single 7'' the gorgeous soul ballads that Piero Piccioni composed for the title credits of two Italian-Spanish thrillers, both magnificently sung by Shawn Robinson's divine voice. A legend in funk circles, the enigmatic producer Soopasoul made his name from a hugely successful debut album 'Twin Stix' released on Jalapeno Records in 2009.

Hugely talented both in front of and behind the mixing boards - it was clear throughout this 12 track masterpiece that the record was going to be a future classic. His purist approach to funk and soul instrumentation and aesthetics resonated with DJs, break-dancers, music connoisseurs, critics and casual listeners alike, it was quite simply just good music...

Since then he's furthered his legacy by creating a hugely successful edits series and recently returned with some fresh Soopasoul cuts in the shape of 'If It Ain't Funky Back It Up' and 'Pushin Weight'. But as the tenth anniversary of 'Twin Stix' draws near the man has gone back to where he started and delivered some special 7" edits of two of those classic tracks.

'Ya Looking Tight' has been a DJ secret weapon for years and now it's been given a tidy little edit that makes it even tastier... Still packing all the funk but also trimming a full minute off the original into a compact arrangement for all of your dancefloor needs.

But it doesn't stop there. A standout track on the album and this producer's calling-card - 'Soopasoul Theme' was a beast of a jam weighing in at over six minutes. With its new streamlined and svelte makeover it clocks in at under four and comes complete with a drums outro that's incredibly amenable to DJ mixing.

Russian born and very gifted musician Aleceo is a new addition to the ongoing rooster of Copenhagen's prolific Music For Dreams label - Aleceo came to attention of label boss Kenneth Bager with the brilliant first Ep 'Clouds' - (all tracks included here.).
Aleceo has his own musical voice, he produces and composes music that is rich in harmonies and melodies - he sits somewhere between Balearic and Deep House - combining the past and moving forward and this double vinyl 'Teletrip' is an excellent taster of his many talents and a real body of work.

'Liebe Tanzen' is a sunny mood full of vintage Roland vocoders, imagine yourself in a Zeppelin watching the earth from the skies and hearing handclaps, acidic noodling and beautiful rhodes combined with a high-pitched soulful voice repeating 'Take My Love' and you have the mood of a modern soul track supported by the balearic brigade. 'Dipping Into You' is a deep house mood featuring the beautiful voice of Jelila- sounding like a late 80 ties Boy's Own track played in a barn just when the Sunrise appears.
One of the outstanding killer tunes and a real grower on the debut album by Aleceo is the single 'Whisper To the Wind' a track recorded with Canadian singer Wulf SoulFire - ten minutes of powerful Roland 909 drums, talking verses and a sublime chorus.
'Nevesomost' - a cinematic, melancholic acidic journey that was inspired by the old USSR Sci Fi movie 'Moscow - Cassiopeya' where a group of children was sent to Mars. James Clarke's Mystery Movie was released in 1974 as modern, small group compositions in various moods. Ideally suited to the new Americanised style of T.V. and cinema flm where music is used to create the mood and carry the action'.
So this collection covers a lot of bases, but it does so brilliantly and has absolutely no right to be such a fantastic listen from start to fnish.Mystery Movie is best known for the slick drum breaks underpinning the top-notch jazz-funk chase theme Car Patrol', the fuzz rifng and ARP soloing of The Heavies' and the slow-mo strut of Mystery Moll'. Study In Fear' and Empty Streets' are horror soundtrack fodder of the fnest sort.
However, it's the understated, plaintive pieces that we fnd the most rewarding.
Ambient feels and strung-out fried-folk treats, full of cyclical naïve melodies.
Music that evokes the 'downlifting' Ronnie Lane and Ron Wood instrumentals from their great Mahoney's Last Stand LP, as well as the beautiful soundtrack work of Jack Nitzsche and Ry Cooder. You might also recognise Waiting Game' from being sampled by melodic downbeat masters Express Rising.
Check Relaxed Theme', Quiet Girl', Routine Procedure' and Quietness Sustained' for a melodic, melancholic set, with the last three performed on just acoustic guitar and harp. Gorgeous work.
As with all ten re-issues, the audio for Mystery Movie comes from the original analogue tapes and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis. When Alan Parker recorded the killer library soul-funk LP The Voice of Soul with session vocalist Madeline Bell in 1976, some bright spark at Themes decided to also release all of the backing tracks as a separate, and equally innocuously title LP called The Sound of Soul. Thank goodness for bright sparks.
Released as a collection of unobtrusive musical backings in various rhythmic styles', the LP's original description dryly explains these tracks have been issued without melody and are therefore particularly suitable for use behind commentary. Female vocal versions of these tracks are issued on TIM 1021 The Voice Of Soul and it is possible to edit from vocal version to instrumental version or vica versa where commentary or scene changes occur'.Madeline Bell was backed by The Rhythm Section, who were for all intents and purposes the Themes International Music house band. So what we end up with here is entire album of instrumental work-outs by a band comprised of the formidable talents of Alan Hawkshaw on keyboards, Alan Parker on guitars, Barry Morgan on drums, Les Hurdle on bass guitar and Frank Ricotti on percussion.
Without Bell's vocals these backing tracks are given all the room they need to breathe. Each one more than stands up on its own.
The Sound of Soul is a real diggers' delight and, unsurprisingly, a must-have counterpart to The Voice of Soul.

Betty Everett was better known for her Soul recordings in the 1960's, including some successful songs on Vee Jay, most famously The Shoop Shoop song, You're no Good and Getting Mighty Crowded.

Her iconic and oft covered Soul tunes have somewhat obscured her earlier recordings, some of them are compiled here for your listening pleasure.

Many know Luther Davis from his more familiar and previously reissued disco floater 'You Can Be A Star', not so many people outside the collector's world know the disco-funk 45 'Keep on Dancin' as its about 4x as rare and slightly more out there musically (which is a good thing). The horn and guitar led disco funk hook float's almost precisely between Modern Soul and Deepfunk (The scene that played it first) and for a change i love the guitar solo, used almost like a synth effect. On the flip is an admittedly formulaic deep soul joint that just works due to the dope backing vocals and crispy drumming.

Freddie handed me some demo's & tracks around 2001 and always really loved this song and arrangement but didn't know where to put it. A few years later it featured on a Tru Thoughts ''Soul Search '' artist album in 2006 but still never came out in it's own right as a single.

Earlier this year we mentioned to Freddie we were interested and asked if he had an unreleased instrumental for the flip to which he duly supplied and so finally to surface on Mukatsuku a timeless soulful classic that doesn't seem to have aged at all. WELCOME TO Wanted And Needed, a Northern Soul playlist befitting of any discerning DJ and one that would happily slot into any Soul Night, All-Nighter or Weekender today.
Some of our discs were first spun as far back as the Twisted Wheel, such as The Precisions' floorpacker 'If This Is Love'. Others were unreleased at the time of recording and have found favour in more recent times, such as The Persianettes 'Run Run' (originally covered up as 'You Better Get Away' by The Sequins). Also unreleased at the time was Pearl Jones' infectious 'Give Me Another Chance', a Sidra recording that finally surfaced in 2001 on a company acetate. Jones also appears here on her own composition 'Let My Baby Go' as a member of the Embraceables. Another of our featured tracks that eluded the Northern Soul scene at the time is Joey Delorenzo's feel-good 'Wake Up To The Sunshine Girl' issued in 1973 on the tiny Mi-Val label but sounds much earlier and probably is. The unknown Delorenzo was reputedly a local car salesman with a passion to become a recording artist. He finally got his 3 minutes 15 seconds of fame in return for a generous deal down at the lot!
Our playlist kicks off with a real heavyweight of the UK Rare Soul scene, our title track, the legendary 'Just Say You're Wanted (And Needed)' by Gwen Owens. A flop in America, it wasn't until 1976 that this - already rare - 45 finally made it to these shores and shook the Casino walls. The action is relentless with 100% floorpackers courtesy of The Precisions, Tony Galla, The Capreez, Ronnie And Robyn with their vocal to 'Sidras Theme', The Falcons, and Mickey Lee Lane (aka Sounds Of Lane) with his raucous instrumental 'Tracks To Your Mind'.

The opener "Bad" signals at this departure from their upbeat predecessor stripping away the beats, relying on the interplay between Turco's ringing chords, the enveloping synthwork and Hall's melancholic, rhythmic intonations. "Mute" brings back the drums, couched in a slinking hip-hop beat and a creeping synth lead. Throughout the record, Turco's productions glean from an eclectic, disparate mix: melodic Amiga tracker music, Metro Boomin', New Age, The-Dream while Hall seems ever more comfortable exploring syncopation and half-rap/half-sung excursions. 'Chasing Goosebumps', DJ Jazzy Jeff's 'M3',
Masego's 'Lady Lady', and Kaidi Tatham's 'It's A
World Before You', released on First Word recently.
It's through these recent collaborations that we have
a few unique ingredients peppered through this
project, the track 'Jeff's Piano' is based on a sample
taken from Eric's iPhone, capturing a moment when
Kaidi was teaching Masego a few chords at Jeff's
studio. Both integral players to the Playlist Retreat,
Eric and Kaidi have also provided remix duties for
Moonchild, Omar and Leon Ware, and Kaidi Kat also
lends his key playing talents to a few tracks here.
Eric has also worked as a producer for artists like
Oddisee, Guilty Simpson, Dego, Tawiah, Rahel and
Fatima, whilst his DJ skills have seen him tour the
globe with luminaries such as Erykah Badu, Robert
Glasper and Questlove. He's received props over the
years from tastemakers across the world, including
Rich Medina, 9th Wonder, Bobbito, Dam Funk, Phonte, Gilles Peterson, James Poyser (The Roots) and Ali Shaheed
Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest).

'Cortando Bajito' is Gecko Turner's new afro-latin banger and sounds like Stevie Wonder performing an Innervisions B-side in West Africa, with DFA records sewn into the tapestry. The 7-inch vinyl comes with a remix by LA's Jungle Fire, who push the psychedelic Latin side of the tune with added soaring psychedelic guitars and some echo chamber trickery. The song, taken from Turner's new compilation Soniquete: The Sensational Sound Of Gecko Turner is a certified floor filler, co-written and featuring percussion by Akin Elegbede Onasanya and keys from Chavi Ontoria, both of highly rated Nigerian Afrobeat outfit OGUN Afrobeat from Madrid.

"I started working on this groove with drummer Akin Onasanya and co-producer Borja Torres. When we had the drums and the bassline right, keyboard player Juan Carlos Ontoria did his thing. He used a Hammond B3 that happened to be in the studio and put several layers of clavinet and Minimoog too (there's no guitar at all). Then I thought of this phrase from some Cuban friends of mine, 'Vienen cortando bajito...', and that was it. It means something like 'they're coming strong'."

Tiptoe is taken from Trevor's debut solo record, 'Relationships', released in 2017.

On the A side the Brooklyn legend applies his magic touch to 'Tiptoe', combining warm and soulful vibes with a house touch. A must-have for not only for the soulful house heads but also anyone that loves quality in music.

Another sure shot double sider out the Now-Again catalogue, until now both tracks were album only and both pure club killers. I smashed these back in the day; I remember listening to it from Jazzman Geralds collection and was blown away. I went right out and found the LPs which took a little time even then when there were fewer people after them. A couple of years after that 'Kashmere' was dropped on funky 16 corners comp Egon put together, and the cat was out the bag. Anyway back to the music, for those who don't know, Conrad O. Johnson of Kashmere High School, Houston Texas, created the Kashmere Stage Band turning it into one of the most fierce unbeatable high school bands in the national championships, the recordings here are my two favorites out of many. Don't miss out on the 2011 Documentary Thunder Soul which reunites the band with Conrad O. Johnson over 30 years down the line.

Basement Freaks serves up a classic funk instrumentation version of his own jam 'White Hot' which features the sizzling vocals of Ms. Kylie Auldist (The Bamboos, Cookin' On 3 Burners) over a jumping groove. He's taken it back to the old school and managed to achieve the seemingly impossible of improving on his already impeccable music.

Over on the flip he's taken the Smoove & Turrell frontman's sweet and soulful vocals of the track 'Won't Get Fooled Again' and revised it into a barnstorming electro funk joint. It's not the first time these two have come together musically and whenever they do its always-on-point.

Lance Ferguson's Raregroove Spectrum is a collection of newly recorded versions of classic funk, soul, jazz and latin vinyl rarities, which features some of Melbourne's finest musicians across the album, including past and present members of The Bamboos, The Putbacks and Hiatus Kaiyote.

This 2 track single provides just a hint of what delights the full Raregroove Spectrum album contains - Lance explains that much of the inspiration for the re-works comes from his experience as a DJ; "Some of these versions can almost be looked at as DJ re-edits, sometimes we're extending what may be a really short track into something longer, or teasing out the elements in a song that really make it work on a dance-floor. It's essentially what someone does with a club re-edit, except we went the extra step and re-recorded the whole thing with a live band".

First up is a reinterpretation of a super obscure deep funk acetate 45 released by Keb Darge, Egg Roll - the follow on track is Lance's take on The Soul Vibrations The Dump.
The forthcoming album reaches further - and includes James Mason's 'Sweet Power, Your Embrace' as a sun-drenched Samba, or Anderson Paak's sure shot tune 'Am I Wrong' given an 1980's style Boogie/Jazz Funk makeover to the epic, widescreen Jazz-Funk of Pleasure's 'Joyous' - Rare Groove Spectrum provides new perspectives on the obscure to the well-loved, from old-school to new sounds - this is rare grooves re-grooved... beautifully.

The two sides of 1973's Big Business / Wind of Change are mainly the work of thegreat Keith Mansfeld but there's a killer cameo each from Alan Hawkshaw and David Snell to help deliver a thematic suite, diverse in mood, applicable to dramatic and environmental situations'. A Be With favourite and truly one for the heads.
The Big Business of side A is all the work of Keith Mansfeld. It's heavy on the suspense and features the vital Hot Property', an insistent groove so good that Madlib sampled it to lace the ace Long Awaited' by Lootpack with Dilated Peoples.
Sleeping Giant 1' is a more feshed out version of the equally-dazzling Fatal Error', evoking the orchestral magic of David Axelrod. Indeed, it conjures images of Diamond D falling over himself in the early-to-mid 90s to loop its intoxicatingly
eerie soundscape. Complete with guitar flls that recall Paris, Texas-era Ry Cooder, you need this record for this piece alone.
The horn-and-fute-led "Tycoon" is a head-nodder and "Power Complex" has some fantastic percussion. Other highlights include the breezy glide of Whistle Stop Tour' and its sister groove Clean Air.'
Over on Side B is the more expansive Wind Of Change, which includes the David Snell and the Alan Hawkshaw contributions. But these ain't no fller. Snell's shufing International Flight' sounds like a smooth Dorothy Ashby track tossed from the heavens. Hawkshaw's Road And Rail' is about as luxurious and strung-
out as the great man gets and it might just be the highlight of this whole set.
Not to be outdone, if Mansfeld's Balance Of Power' doesn't make you feel like king of the world then you must be playing it wrong. Oh, and did we mention World In Action'!
As with all ten re-issues, the audio for Big Business / Wind of Change comes from the original analogue tapes and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regularSimon Francis. We've taken the same care with the sleeves, handing the reproduction duties over to Richard Robinson, the current custodian of KPM's
brand identity.
