Various - Gut Funky: The Best of C.R.S. Records

Not much is known about Philadelphia record producer/label owner Curtis R. Staten who sporadically operated the C.R.S. record label during the late 1960's throughout the early 1980's. During that time, C.R.S. released at least, 15 singles and 2 albums of some of the finest R&B, funk and gospel recordings from the Philadephia area.

Fans of Northern Soul and Deepfunk will be pleased to see, also hear, some very rare AND amazing songs by such artists as George Johnson Jr. & The Mondells, Bonnie Blanchard, Andy Aaron & The Mean Machine, The Zodiacs, Midnight Madness, Carl 'Sherlock' Holmes, ... and many more.

Plug Seven Records

Seven Wonders is a 14 track snapshot of the experimental Soul and Jazz scene burgeoning in Australia today. Recorded at Plug Seven Studios in Melbourne in collaboration with Wondercore Island, the compilations main aim was to capture spontaneous musical moments that reflect the diversity of sounds, and quality of musicianship in Australia today, with very little interference from microphone to tape to the record in your hands.

Seven Wonders contains a super diverse cross section of artists, with well over 50 individuals putting in their time & creativity to bring this to life. It's a record that truly highlights the grass roots soul movement blowing up day to day in Australia. It's recorded largely over two weeks, the majority of the tracks on 'Seven Wonders' were captured in one take, bottling the raw energy and virtuosity of Melbourne's most accomplished, established and emerging players.

There's an antipodean take on P-Funk from Laneous, characteristically enigmatic vocals from soul singer Allysha Joy and a free-flowing instrumental from Sampa the Great collaborator Dave Godriguez, aka GODTET. Several tracks include production and background instrumentation from Hiatus Kaiyote's rhythm section Perrin Moss and Paul Bender, and way, way ... more.

Casbah73 - To Be Free

To Be Free

Love Monk
26.02.2019

"Last year's 'Love Saves The Day' was excellent, but I get the sense that he was just warming up... this double header which is en route from Spain's capital next month contains this massive funky jam - and this is smoking!"
- Craig Charles

After his previous banger 'Love Saves the Day' got hands in the air on dance floors all over the world, well, it turns out that Casbah 73 was just warming up.

This new double A-sided release kicks off with 'To Be Free', an ambitious and, dare we say it, timeless number. It sees the welcome return of the very talented Angela Gooden, her alternatively seductive and evocative vocals riding a sumptuously warm and rich groove featuring a sparkling string section and anchored by a heavyweight golden era disco rhythm section. Classic yet modern, this will set any dance floor alight.

Over on the flip-side, 'Doing Our Own Thing' is a massive, full-on instrumental jazz-funk boogie cut rich in live instrumentation, clocking in at just over nine minutes and showing off a killer horn section to full effect. The dazzling interplay between the various players has peak-time euphoria written all over it, and those nine minutes are over way too soon.

The new single is a more than worthy successor to last year's 'Love Saves The Day', an insatiably funky slice of disco soul that smacked of raw authenticity (and one of the funkiest bass breakdowns you'll hear in a long while). A "proper" composition recorded live in the studio with an excellent cast of musicians, it found favour with many of the scene's more open-minded DJs across the board.

All through the nineties, revered digger/vinyl dealer Oli Stewart aka Casbah 73 trawled across America leaving no warehouse standing in his quest for the rare and the downright elusive. His knack for discovering, or bringing to light many an unknown classic, meant his reputation with DJs and producers around the globe was legendary.

Extremely rare left field funky soul on this one, originally released on the 'catchy' Mijarelix label (name came from the initials of the band members). Charm is the name of the game. Fragile guitar and vocal with a great hook, simple and beautiful. Flip it over and you have another original, more garagey but still funky flip, not sure which I prefer, love them both, hope you do.

Clear/red vinyl Edition

2nd Drop Records release 'Seven Lies', the debut album by Felix Manuel aka Djrum (pronounced 'Drum'). Its sounds are inspired by the rawness of urban London, influences of Portishead, DJ Shadow and The Cinematic Orchestra, jungle, minimal techno, classic house, broken beat - all seamlessly segued with a nod to jazz vinyl and film music.
Fans will recognise Djrum's iconic tropes on 'Seven
Lies': widescreen atmospheres, dub chords, dusty and melancholic strings, obscure film samples. But this time its spread over a bigger, more luxurious canvas that dips like an undulating terrain of sound; techno troughs, bumpy hip hop breaks, euphoric
drum and bass, all filtered through the Djrum node.
Felix would admit himself he is a not a prolific producer. Preferring to craft and hone, often allowing music to mutate and diverge down different paths, his tracks often top the 8-9 min marks in
length. However, each track is never at risk of becoming staid or boring, quite the opposite as ideas mutate and evolve, subtle differences and nuances are evoked and explored.
Inspired by the sounds of Ninja Tune's Solid Steel
radio show, Oxford born/London based Felix became....

Mhysa - Nevaeh

Nevaeh

12inchHDBLP047
Hyperdub
18.02.2020

Mhysa, the newest addition to the Hyperdub roster, is ‘a popstar for the cyber resistance’ hailing from Maryland via New York. ‘Nevaeh’ is lo-fi R&B with a bedroom feel and challenging lyricism focussed on identity and black experience for the online generation.

She started ‘Nevaeh’ in late 2017, shortly after the release of debut album ‘Fantasii’, recording at home with some input from Lawd Knows, a frequent collaborator on her Scraaatch project. It is Mhysa’s intimate reflection on the black femme experience from multiple vantage points : sex and sexuality, self-love and self-discovery, black empowerment and lineage, and pleasure or the lack of it.

She describes the album as “a prayer for Black women and femmes to be taken to or find a new and better world away from the apocalypse ... a safe space, a sort of negro heaven.” ‘Nevaeh’ is deeply personal but easily relatable, its intimacy heightened by scattered acapella moments and interludes referencing black pop culture, where Mhysa’s delicate voice is laid bare, while other tracks reprise the melancholic R&B her mother raised her on, updated through a queer lens.

Conversely, several of the album’s tunes have found space in Kode9’s club sets over the last year, like the mischievous ‘Sanaa Lathan’ and skeletal ‘w_me’. Of this record’s progression from the last, Mhysa sought “to be more vulnerable and experiment with vocal range … to write more complicated vocal melodies that would be harder to do”, with her production now experimenting with new techniques, and (often self-taught) live instrumentation, as is her family tradition.

Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators - One In A Million

The second single from the upcoming Nicole Willis album Happiness in Every Style opens up the promised spectrum of joy into new ecstatic states. One In A Million is an unapologetic love song, which while connecting to this most traditional mode in soul music, also makes it correct for the dancefloor. Connoisseur terms such as 'crossover' or 'modern soul' might prove to be accurate here, but a membership in the soul scene is not mandatory to get down.

The main thing is that this up-tempo horn-driven groover, propelled by The Soul Investigators (as the usual suspects), should make things move inside, tickling nerves in scenesters as well as the layman, as their breakthrough hit If This Ain't Love did back in the day.

The world and the music business is different for Nicole Willis and the boys from up north. Nevertheless, One In A Million might be the underground hit that nobody saw coming. Or it just as well might not, but this is no excuse for not making quality music. This and more can be anticipated from the new album, dropping on Timmion Records in autumn 2015.

Various - Timmion Records Singles Box, Vol. 2

The second round of Timmion's soul packs features five exquisite 7" singles from the catalogue. Most importantly it works as an introduction to the Stylart sublabel with two highly acclaimed debut performances in Fred's "Love Can Last Forever" as well as Bobby Oroza's "This Love". The latter took the California lowrider scene by a storm in 2016, and became a sleeper Youtube hit in the process.

In addition to these the boxset includes another deep burner by Willie West in "After The Storm", Ernie Hawks' funk jazz workouts "Scorpio Man" and "Journey To The Bottom" as well as the fuzzed-out oddball instrumental "Queen Of Soul" by the current Timmion house band Cold Diamond & Mink. The latter has a key role in most of the output on this set as well as times to come in Timmion.

Stating their influences range from Prince, The Weeknd, Janet Jackson to Frank Ocean, Secret Rendezvous call their sound 'Indie R&B' and their latest track - 'Back In The Day' is a sentimental slow jam that showcases flashes of these elements set against bedroom and lofi styles.

Lyrically Morsch reminisces over the 90's, conjuring up imagery of baggy clothes, listening to Tupac on the basketball court, and going cruising with a bottle of Bacardi at night.
Her silky delivery and sing-along chorus is perfectly suited for the 808-led backdrop from Lauw.

CRAC - You Can't Turn Your Back on Me

The band C.R.A.C. was formed in 1974 by bassist/vocalist Rick Cua, drummer Tommy Rozzano, keyboardist Larry Arlotta, and lead singer/percussionist Ricky Chisholm. Their name is an acronym for the founding members' last names. Playing mostly popular covers, the band's main gig was four nights a week at a Syracuse, NY club called Big Daddy's. It didn't take long before Big Daddy's was packed whenever C.R.A.C. was there.
As they gained popularity, a variety of opportunities presented themselves. Soon, they had enough new gigs to leave Big Daddy's and focus on their budding career.
Drawing inspiration from other bands in their genre, their passion for music, and the success of their first radio single, "Of The Lites," they continued to add to their repertoire of songs written by members of the band. Fresh off the high of their radio debut, they added two new members: guitarist Ronnie DeRollo and singer/percussionist Duane "Spoon" Walker. C.R.A.C., or as they became known at this time, CRAC, continued on their upward trajectory as one of New York's premier funk and R&B bands. The band continued to expand throughout the late 70's as their territory moved throughout New York and New England.
The busier the band got, the more their talent grew, and this afforded some members the honour of playing with such well-known artists as Maynard Ferguson, Melba Moore, Sea Level, Duke Jupiter, and The Outlaws.

Vol. 6

Always hungry for funky soul and finding it an increasing challenge to unearth classic dancefloor dope they hadn't already heard, Mako & Mr Bristow have spent the last few years editing old cuts that either weren't funky enough or weren't funky at all.

The aim? To transform these tracks into the funkiest of soul without them overtly sounding like edits to those who didn't know the originals. Now, after four previous sell-out 7"s (two of which have been re-pressed), they return with Stank Soul Edits Vol. 5.

The appropriately-named Funky Diggin' re-imagines an obscure 70s soul-rock 45 as a dancefloor anthem for crate-diggers everywhere while Dynamic B-Boy sees monster drum breaks grafted onto a cut straight from the 70s psych-soul underground.

Ladies and gentlemen – you are cordially invited to get stank once more!

It's been around three years since JPattersson opened up a whole new horizon of formerly unheard possibilities between the worlds of Dub and Techno. A lot has been happening ever since, and that's very noticeable on his second album. It still has all the signature elements of JPattersson: There's his dreamy, virtuous trumpet play and his witty vocals, there's his dubby delays and heavyweight beats which often line up in a Downbeat rhythm. However, besides his fanfares there's now also many folks, many musical friends who contribute to the vibe of this album. There's a track with Berlin MC Longfingah, latin-flavoured rhythms from Polish Reggae and Dancehall producer Dreadsquad as well as a stylistically wide range of remixes that reflect the symbiotic cooperation and mutual inspiration of these last years.

POMONA DREAM - BLAME IT ON THE GROOVE / SAN FRANCISCO

Ok, this one is different from the usual standard of re-edits releases on GAMM.

Swedish duo Pomona Dream from Gothenburg is no re-edit outfit but an official artist. The main track 'Blame It On the Groove' is a vocal rare groove jam which is based on Aged In Harmony's highly sought after 'You're A Melody'.

Together with catchy soul/pop vocals from Pomona Dream and tasteful additional production this simply just works...yup it's that good.

To make the case even stronger Pomona Dream got an extra treat on the B-side. 'San Francisco' got an uptempo electronic / hip hop feel that is very modern yet very timeless with its simplistic vocals and synth(ish) melodies.

It's basically a solid song with an edgy production. All in all, this a real nice 7" inch with lots of character. Check check!

Optimistics - Optimistics

Optimistics

Optimistics

12inchBEWITH067LP
Be With Records
11.11.2019

This is some serious top shelf material out of Baltimore and a certified masterclass in sweet symphonic soul. Optimistics was originally released in 1970 on Turbo and it’s every bit as essential as The Chi-Lites, The Delfonics and The Moments yet nowhere near as known. Those original copies are ridiculously rare and, of course, the prices are equally ridiculous.

Optimistics is a killer LP throughout, beloved of discerning hip-hop producers worldwide and routinely championed by the legendary Pete Rock. The genius George Kerr has handled the production on what is an album of beautiful, naïve soul for mind and body. It’s bursting with goodness and, like the best of its genre, it radiates a heart-breaking ambience that cuts right to the core.

The band of Billy, Harold, James, Charles and Jerome are described on the back cover as “five young, black knights who have embarked on a musical crusade and they're gonna slay a lot of dragons along the way”. We’re not entirely sure how many mythical serpents were dispatched during the making of this album but we can certainly attest to the sense of evangelical drive.

Evergreen opener “You Put Something New In My Life” is a heart-stopping ode to a transformative love. A ballad with spine-tingling chord changes and melodic switch-ups to spare, its sweeping strings and precise drums complement the falsetto delivery perfectly.

It’s followed by the equally beguiling “Let’s Love”. Another string-drenched harmony ballad, it revolves around delicate piano and distinctive guitar lines, crying out to be recontextualised by the best sampling technicians. Closing out the A side, the wonderfully restrained “Love Is God Almighty” is harp and horn-driven, barely-there soul from a higher plain. Heavenly.

Ushering in the flipside, “Should I Let Myself Go”, sampled recently by Knxwledge, is sensational guitar-soul with a yearning that could bring the most hardened soul to tears. It’s followed by the uptempo, Temptations-funk of “Man” and quietly-great “If I Could Influence Man”, where the competing vocals ride a chugging, funky breakbeat and delicious guitar licks. The refreshing, groovy “Say It Baby” is an appropriately positive, upward looking closer. Its sentiment and feel speaks directly to both the band name and the title of this, their only album. Truly optimistic.

The whole LP is a winning blend of slow, spine-tingling ballads and joyously upbeat tracks. It’s a case of A+ vocals, melodies and harmonies over beautiful playing and arrangements. It deserves to be canonical.

This fresh reissue has been mastered with the usual care by Simon Francis and cut by the legendary Pete Norman. The artwork has been lovingly reproduced by the Be With team.

Optimistics should be known to a much wider audience. We’ve hopefully gone some way towards rectifying that.

Carlton Jumel Smith & Cold Diamond & Mink - Ain't That Love

Continuing the series of single releases from Carlton Jumel Smith's album "1634 Lexington Ave." is a beauty of a track in the form of "Ain't That Love". In soul music guitar doesn't always take lead the way it does here played by Seppo Salmi of Timmion house band Cold Diamond & Mink. You might know those tracks like Darondo's "Didn't I" or "Oh Love" by Iron Knowledge that begin with a guitar line that just freezes the heart.

And there's of course one soulful guitar man we can't leave out here. If Carlton ever put his Bobby Womack to the front, it might be the case with this mid-tempo shuffler. Carlton always sings like he's squeezing the last drops of emotion from the human race, but in this number he's really aiming for the cherry. Cold Diamond & Mink supply the right ingredients for the mix with a strong beat and mellowed out horn melodies.

If there's one single you want to pick from Carlton's album for those Autumn Sundays looking through the window or walking in the park, make it this one.

Carlton Jumel Smith & Cold Diamond & Mink - I'd Better

The only cover tune on Carlton Jumel Smith's "1634 Lexington Ave." album is not really a cover at all, since it was first cut by Carlton himself already 10 years ago. The sultry 2009 edition of "I'd Better", that was put out on the short-lived UK Soulchoonz label, is a nice piece of programmed mid-tempo modern soul. The new version, now getting a 7" single treatment on Timmion, still sounds miles away from the polished earlier effort.

It starts off with a nice guitar led beat before settling into a sweet Tighten Up groove, a funky road which still has plenty curves to explore, even for Cold Diamond & Mink, who are certainly not lifting water from this particular well for the first time. What remains naturally is Carlton's ultra-soulful vocal performance, and a message of manning up to the max, staying true to your word in front of something divine.

It's not that often you hear a more recent version of a song sounding so that you would think it's the old version. Essentially, what you get is a beautiful piece of xover soul, with timeless swagger, and an instrumental with soulful legs of its own.

Various - Hamburg Soul Weekender

The weekender is a very British thing, particularly combined with that other very British subculture: northern soul. When the first National Soul Weekender took place in Caister in 1979, some ways of celebrating the rare soul music scoring the scene had already been well established: sweaty all-nighters happened all over the country, where dedicated dancers and collectors met and kept the fire burning. And all-dayers came into being, allowing the people to indulge in their passion in different places, with less strict licensing obligations. The clues were all there. British people liked the idea to escape their urban working lives to the seaside on weekends. And the mod culture, always strongly related to soul music, followed suit, partying (and sometimes fighting) on coastal promenades, beaches and clubs, as immortalized by tabloid headlines, and a certain rock concept album plus movie. The brilliant idea in Caister, however, was to combine all-nighters and all-dayers, and given the unreliability of the British weather, the concept was due for success. If it rained, you just danced in a club, and other places. If not, you had fun at sea, and then danced, day and night, the whole weekend.

Across the North Sea in Germany, it seemed like only matter of time that all this would catch on. And indeed, when the British mod revival of the late 1970s hit continental shores, it ran through open doors, and the soul part established itself as a subculture as stubborn and ardent. The German weekenders followed a different path though. Starting in 1990 in Berlin and then led by annual events in Nürnberg and later Bamberg, Dresden, Leipzig, Bremen, München, Aachen and more, the locations were in cities. Hamburg is located very near to the UK and accordingly anglophile, and came fully equipped with a sizeable harbour and airport, and so what happened in the UK arguably left a quicker and bigger mark there than elsewhere in Germany. The city also had a long tradition of dancing to soul music to rely on, and a vital club culture, with a long string of cherished soul nights like the Soul Allnighter at Kir, Shelter Club, For Dancers Only and more recently The Soul Seven, Motte Allnighter, Cole Slaw Club, Cool Cat Club and 45 Degrees, just to name a few. But, strangely enough, it had no soul weekender.

In 2007 this changed, when Ralf Mehnert and Jan Drews Tarazi established the Hamburg Soul Weekender, with Tolbert taking care of the all-dayer part. As the three of them were longtime respected DJs and collectors, the weekender had notable line-ups right from the start, and every year a thousand international, national and local soul enthusiasts gather in the storied venue Gruenspan in the seminal Reeperbahn area, to dance and party to the finest 60s and 70s northern soul, modern soul, funk, r&b and other related trends within the scene that were always spotted early on, and with a keen eye. The music has been played by over 120 top of the league DJs from all over the globe so far, and it was always spread across a long weekend of two all-nighters, one all-dayer, a boat cruise through the harbour and an after party.

Mr. PC aka Peter Croce Edits - Edits From Detroit #2

After a couple years behind the scenes label boss Peter Croce (aka Mr. PC) is back in the production seat to release 3 of his most prized edits with a message. First up is “Life Is A Circle”, a peak hour Philadelphia Disco classic, remastered and extended in all the right places for maximum ecstatic dance floor use. Rounding out the A side is “What Can I Do For You?”, a Gallery-era R&B proto-disco cut with a massive drum break that never got the 12” treatment that it deserved until now. On the flip Peter delivers some dance floor meditation, complete with tons of drums and dub poetry for the heads that dream of a better day. These 3 have been tried and tested on dance floors from Detroit to Chicago and London to Paris, and Rocksteady Disco is excited for you to have them in your mitts. Vinyl only, and hand-stamped by Mr. PC himself.

Emotional Rescue

Emotional Rescue turn their attention to Rare Silk and their sublime cult classic "Storm". It's one of those rare tracks with a wonderful otherworldly quality that manages to be smooth and accessible, and somehow not like anything you've ever heard before. It must be somewhere in the mix, between the dreamy harmonized vocals, lush instrumentation and curious sense of space. The original on the A side is a treat enough, but then throw in a mercurial dubbed out version by Arp on the flip and you've got yourself a 12 inch portal to a most delightful dimension.

Esther Phillips - Home Is Where the Hatred Is / I've Never Found a Man

Official remastered, reissue of two of Esther Phillips' breathtaking covers from the early '70s.

Firstly, Esther's cover of Gil Scott-Heron's timeless masterpiece 'Home Is Where The Hatred Is'. A haunting tale of addiction filled with the rawest of emotions, that can only truly be covered by someone who has fought that same battle with dependency. The pain in Esther's voice completely conveys this vulnerability and does Gill Scott Heron's original total justice. Heart-wrenching and completely absorbing in its honesty, it's a sincere portrayal of the demons both artist's faced in their lives.

On the B side, an adaptation of Eddie Floyd's 'I've Never Found A Girl (To Love Me Like You Do)'. Phillips' trademark soulful tones suit this sweet serenade so well, with the passion oozing from every word she sings. Sit back, relax and prepare to have your heart melted all over again.

45 years after the band's inception, we are proud to announce the official re-issue of

CRAC's debut LP from 1980, "All For You" on KingUnderground.

The new reissue has a silver foil printed cover along with a printed inner sleeve and unseen band photos. The first 300 copies of the new package come with a bonus seven-inch, including two previously unreleased songs. Also available on all digital platforms. The music is comprised of a crossover mix of mellow jazzy soul, AOR, and hints of yacht rock, R&B, and uptempo funk. With its lush, forward thinking arrangements, "All For You" sounds like an album recorded during the peak of the late 70's "California Sound" at a forgotten studio off the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. Throw in a unique blend of East Coast flair and first class songwriting - it's a real treat for fans of this style and beyond.
