Split Decision Band - Watchin' Out 7"

Holy Grail deep disco from Des Moines, Iowa. This 45 has remained at the top of rare Disco, Modern Doul and Deepfunk collectors for years, never dipping below the $1000 mark. Solid unforgiving driving funky disco, flipped with a crazy Funkadilic style stoner funk rock track worthy of Funkadilic at its best. Look out for an unreleased LP soon on Eothen Alapatt's Nowagain Records later in the year.

Samuel Jonathan Johnson - My Music

My Music is a stellar spiritual soul / jazz-funk gem, recorded by keyboardist-singer Samuel Jonathan Johnson in 1978. The epitome of a cult classic, it didn't do much upon its release but steadily found an audience over the decades that followed. It eventually worked its way into the culture, and latterly the wantlists, of wave after wave of soul aficionados.

This is music that shares the jazzy R&B DNA of contemporaries like Roy Ayers and is an intoxicating blend of mellow moments and more groove-heavy tracks. Spacey keys and lush production give it a luxurious, enveloping warmth.

My Music opens with the gorgeous title track: an indulgent slow jam opus. Introducing us to Johnson’s compelling musical vision, it features a rich mélange of production techniques. Dripping in strings, horns, backing singers, popping funk bass lines and swooshing synth waves, it’s an unusually structured cosmic two stepper that has an irrepressible groove. Accordingly, it’s been a favourite with the diggers and it was sampled by The Alchemist for Jadakiss’s “We Gonna Make It” (and it was also used on Ras Kass’s “Home Sweet Home”… but that’s a story for another time).

The up-tempo “Sweet Love” bubbles over with joy, its uplifting lyrics backed by infectious bass and jazzy Fender Rhodes lines. It follows a cover of “What the World Need’s Now Is Love”, taken at a funereal pace that transforms it into a heartfelt plea for love and understanding. Essential in these dark days.

After a full-minute-long opening of lush cinematic strings and horns, “Because I Love You” makes space for Samuel’s voice, accompanied by some keys and just a sprinkle of guitar. It builds back up and then mellows its way out to a jazz lounge finish (in all the right ways). The feel-good ebullience of the Stevie Wonder-esque “It Ain’t Easy” closes out the LP’s first side.

The second side bursts open with the heavy bounce and disco-funk basslines of “You”, a slightly off-beat string-laden dancer with insistent horns and a piano-assisted groove. Next up is “Just Us”, a legendary steppers track that could be heard oozing out of deep soul radios and funk sound systems back in the late 80s.

“Yesterdays and Tomorrow” is a moving original ballad that is followed by an exquisite high-stepping paean to mom in the form of “Thank You Mother Dear”. The thumping easy-glide of “Reason For The Reason” brings the album to a close.

Respectfully mastered by Simon Francis and cut by the master Pete Norman, this reissue of Samuel Jonathan Johnson’s sole LP sounds as sumptuous as that scarlet gown on the front cover. The sleeve artwork was lovingly restored by the Be With team. My Music is a luxurious and rare collection of songs that now has an opportunity to reach beyond its cult audience.

REPRESS NOW IN

Played By Theo Parrish, 2 Deep Disco Classics on 45 for the first time.

Brand new master from Sony cut at Timmion Cutting Lab, Finland.

"G.Q" stood for "good quality", they were not joking. As well as a few top 10 hits G.Q also had a wealth of brilliant disco bangers across their 70s output. Here we present 2 favourites of my own,k 'Lies' and 'is It Cool?' . Not only of mine buy clearly Theo Parrish's also as he featured both on 'Ugly Edits' over a decade ago, great as it saved me from playing the LP in clubs and fighting the feedback. These track have always sat next to the best rare modern soul and Deepfunk classics with ease, they are some of the best records in the Genre.

To top it off we got a new perfect master from Sony and cut the 45 at Timmion cutting Lab in Finland and its sounds great. A personal favorite, im delighted to be able to put this out with the care it deserves. "See that there's a party going on……"

Lutz Krajenski - Play Hits Agogo

As our label is celebrating its ten years anniversary in 2017 it's about time for an appraisal. we asked LUTZ KRAJENSKI - an exceptionally gifted Jazz arranger and more than talented keyboarder who is also based in our homecity Hannover - to re-interpret some songs from our catalog. They have been recorded with the help of various guest musicians stemming from Krajenski's inner circle of friends in the music scene as well as the singer ALANA ALEXANDER who played an important role in shaping the sound of the album.

the full album will be released in early 2018, but here we go with a first taste: "I Got Hope" is originally written and recorded by THE HI-FLY ORCHESTRA and a special bonus to this 7" Single is the cover version of TIMMY THOMAS' classic tune "Cold, Cold People".

Our 14thDubplate in the series sees young recruit Bopperson step up to the plate for the very first time. His unique approach, recording 45s at 33 RPM and then editing from there, delivers dance floor friendly results.

Side A sees Harry Coade's version of Michael Jackson's Remember The Time get the slow & synthy treatment. While on the flip, chesty country legend Dolly Parton gets deep as her voice and those strings are slowed and stretched by Bopperson for a cunning take on the heart wrenching Jolene.

Turn Off The Lights

7"-VinylAOE008

07.04.2020

Two essential and eternal classics from New York Hammond legend Larry Young with vocals by the talented Linda "Tequila" Logan.

Rare groove standard "Turn of the Lights" I would hope needs no introduction, I well known album track that does actually exist on a rare promo arista 45 but it is HARD to find and goes for around $250+ when it turns up once in a blue moon (probably more now people know it exists). On the flip Linda's amazing free vocal on "Fuel for the Fire" is cut on 45 for the first time, one of those out there records you play on a good night when people are feeling open and it all comes together. I have spun both these records for over 20 years and no format surpasses the cut done here by Timmion Lab from the new Sony masters, I'm very happy I don't have to break out the album tracks any more.

Larry died in 1978 from untreated pneumonia and Linda disappeared from music apart from a few writing credits on 90s pop artist Betty Boo's tracks. If you love that voice be sure to check out her great vocal on Tony Williams Lifetime track 'You Make It Easy', great folky Jazz.

Lucky Brown & The S.G.'s - Pecan Trees Speak to Each Other

LTD. 350 HAND-NUMBERED COPIES!

Lucky Brown's composition PECAN TREES SPEAK TO EACH OTHER was inspired by the summer sounds of the rustling pecan groves of San Marcos, Texas, where he composed his Mesquite Suite TRLP-9074.

Inspiration for the title was found in the writings of Robin Wall Kimmerer in her book, Braiding Sweetgrass, and in southwest poet Wendy Burk's book, Tree Talks. Those who care to look and listen deeply, know that the trees are sentient beings and are in a constant and spirited conversation with their kind and the other beings of the forest. Messages delivered in tantalizing silence, like love notes passed in a classroom, are received with heady anticipation through the power of pollen. And underground, in the dark, a living network of messages are conveyed molecularly from one tree to another other through a vast system of mycelia and bacteria. "I'm hurt," "I am hungry," "I am dying," I am alive!," "I need help," "I am afraid," "Thank you..." These messages tell the other members when to be fruitful, when to conserve their energy, and when to defend themselves from attack. Of course, there are likely many other ways the trees talk that we cannot or will not ever hear.

In a similar way, many of us reach upward and outward for a brighter, more prosperous, more peaceful future like branches reaching to the sun. In a similar way, many of us simultaneously root down into the earth through ritual and dance, and grow and build our local and global community bodies one beat at a time. Many of us who are concerned about the loss of more and more corners of our sustaining yet delicate ecological web want to protect our water, our air, and our earth from extractive and exploitative forces. This is our home, and we are all each others' relatives.

Furthermore, we yearn to use our gifts and our power and our life force to further the cause of the small, the tiny, the quiet, the low, and all the beings on and under the earth. We deliver these messages daily and passionately in so many ways, more and more so along the mysterious networks of the world wide web. And at times, when we have more to say, when words do not suffice, we deliver these messages with our music. Our sonic, musical, vibrational, tone messages are being sent to you right now! Our cries, our tears of sorrow and joy, our love of this planet and our love for it's inhabitants, at once committed to the message of PECAN TREES…"

Seattle USA's S.G.'s, along with The Longhorns of Mesquite Suite renown, proudly feature with this release, Seattle saxophonist and composer Kate Olson on soprano sax and solo. The shorter, edited version on Side B is showcases just Kate's solo, while Side A features Marc Hager (keys) and Colin Higgins (guitar) in addition. Recorded by Lucky to 4-track cassette at Bob Heinemann's Bomb Shelter studio just like the Mesquite Beat/Justice TR-1040 single, and then transferred, overdubbed and mixed by Lucky and Jason Gray at Blue Mallard Studio, this deluxe 10-inch 'found acetate' project, the final chapter of the Tramp Tapes imprint series, represents another beloved Brown & Gray production. As a very special bonus, this release includes the brutal rehearsal version for "'Bout To Blow," recorded on Ollie Klomp's world-famous Magik Carpet (the entire Mystery Road TR-9044 album was recorded there), and on the flip, you'll find a living, breathing rough-funk jam in its entirety, "Scavenge Patch Blues," recorded at the Scavenge Patch as a band warm-up for the Mesquite Suite session.

With this, our humble offering, we send our aspiration to exist in harmony with all the inhabitants of this planet, we are singing, we are playing, we are harmonizing, we are becoming attuned to each other and to the healing vibrations of the universe. PECAN TREES SPEAK TO EACH OTHER... Are you listening?

The Mighty Mocambos - The Future Is Here

The Mighty Mocambos

The Future Is Here

12inchMLP1005COLOUR
Mocambo
26.05.2020

The classic album of Germany's funk champions reissued on surf blue colour vinyl.

Original press release note from 2011:

After almost twenty 45's under various pseudonyms, their thrilling and hugely successful debut album with London-based singer Gizelle Smith and a tour with concerts throughout Europe, Germany's most prolific deep funk formation is ready to step further into the spotlight with their second longplayer.

The aptly titled THE FUTURE IS HERE sees the group explore new territories with features by hiphop legends Afrika Bambaataa and Charlie Funk, French singer Caroline Lacaze and German rare groove queen Su Kramer, while manifesting their unique raw funk sound and refining their unmistakable instrumental style that has long gained international reputation.

Producer legend Kenny Dope (Masters at Work, Bucketheads) picked up the Mighty Mocambos's re-interpretation of the Furious Five classic "The Message" (released under a pseudonym on an obscure phantasy label without proper distribution), remixed it and re-released it on his own imprint Kay Dee Records. This album includes the original version of the "Next Message" – a message that apparently got heard and answered.

Afrika Bambaataa (the Godfather of Hip-Hop) and Charlie Funk (aka Afrika Islam, Grammy- and Oscar-decorated producer of Ice-T and original member of the Zulu Nation) loved the Mocambo vibe and joined the group on stage and in the studio to record "Zulu Walk" and "Battle", two stunning tracks of organic Funk that take Hip-Hop "back to the roots where we started out" (as featured MC King Kamonzi rightfully says) and along the way, leads funk into the future.

Keeping up with the universal spirit and ignoring boundaries of language in favour of the global groove, the Mocambos recorded "Physique", a rousing dancefloor smash sung in French by Caroline Lacaze. "The Sun Shines Tonight" is a cheerful party-in-the-studio session with original German funk and disco queen Su Kramer (who played with Donna Summer in the original cast of "Hair" during the late 1960s) that documents the pure joy of playing and spontaneity of a Mocambo live situation.

The 12 titles on this album showcase the group's collective determination, unified versatility and creative wit. From the drum-heavy, afro-tinged "Calling The Shots", the anthemic "Struggle & Triumph", the romantic melancholy of "French Vanilla Skies", the somber and frantic "Transcendental Express", to songs with an almost cinematic quality like the moody "A Brighter Darkness" and the horroresque "Paranormals Theme", the album offers a broad spectrum of colours, all held together by the unity of a band that has been playing together for years - recorded live in a few takes with simple analog equipment to capture the energy, chemistry and blind faith between dedicated musicians.

The result, mixed and mastered by chief engineer Def Stef with a decidedly modern punch, is a far cry from nowadays vintage soul band replicas. It is a universal and timeless statement: with the knowledge of the past and present, right now, we look into the future - THE FUTURE IS HERE.

The Mandatory Eight - Soul Fanfare #3

The Mandatory Eight first appeared on the compilation "Funk, Soul & Afro Rarities: An Intro To ATA Records" released in 2015 on Here & Now recordings with the song "Suckerpunch", which has since become the label's most requested song for re-release as a 45. ATA have dug deep in the archives to unearth two dance-tempo 45 killers to placate the calls until studio time is allotted to the band for a debut album.

The band's sound and ideology definitely lies in less refined eclectic soul. Feel over precision, passion over execution, soul-on-a-budget grooves.

From the opening drum pick up of "Soul Fanfare #3" it is clear that The Mandatory 8 are here to make you move. With proud horn lines reminiscent of something that you might find in the Stax vaults, Soul Fanfare definitely takes it's lead from backing bands such as the Barkays and the funkier side of Booker T and the MGs. One can imagine that this was definitely a set opener for the group, guaranteed to put foot to floor. Guitar and bass have a care free movement and feel, conjuring up tones of late 60's summer soul hits.

The B-side "Turn It Out" has a darker, moodier feel to the previous side. Still a dance floor filling groove, the band take a direction more similar to below the radar funk outfits such as Amnesty or LA carnival. Biting minor horn lines set the tone backed by a bubbling bed of congas, rhythm guitar, unruly bass and drums which don't dip below boiling for the duration. "Turn It Out" features a manzarek-esque farfisa organ solo which sets the sonic tone of a band without funds but with plenty of soul in the bank.

Both sides will reflect well for different moods on the same dance floor.

Pedro & Jenna Camille - This Is What I'm Going Through EP

It's a captivating encounter when a producer of relative anonymity bursts onto the scene with an exciting and engaging release, that you're drawn back to again and again, wondering how you've never heard of them before. Porto producer Pedro, & Washington DC vocalist Jenna Camille have achieved exactly that with this first release on the mighty Wolf Music Recordings.

The influences from jazz though to soul, RnB & broken beat are weaved deep within this record. You're drawn in from the off with an intro of stripped back pianos behind an emotional spoken word monologue from Jenna, before it opens up into a beatsy, RnB infused groove.

Having pulled you in 'Float' hits you with a richness of synth textures, layers of broken beats and dreamy chords alongside Jenna's "float" mantra hypnotising you deeper and deeper. Reaching the last section of the track though you're woken from that hypnotic groove with a switch to a raw and energetic breakbeat sure to get any crowd moving.

'Keep It H 2000', the final track on the A side, has a real flavour of Fatima to it emanating from Jenna's blissful vocals - laid over the top of sustained Rhodes, weighty synth lines and dynamic drums.

Flip it over and there's a tougher intensity to 'Future Dance (It'll Be OK)', coupling rhythmic stabs with jazzy chord progressions, laced behind a groove that wouldn't be out of place lighting up the floor at a Co-Op night.

To close out the e.p. you're given a sensory overload through Jenna's staggered, overlaid vocals panned to come at you from every angle - it's the perfect outro to both stun you and leave you wanting more. And if this extremely well-polished, first key release is a sign of things to come, Pedro's name will be becoming a lot more familiar in years to come.

Modus Vivendi

2x12inch865339
EMI / Virgin
01.05.2020

“A vital new singer makes her debut…an emo-rap Dark Side Of The Moon …Modus Vivendi suggests Enya and Pink Floyd as much as Frank Ocean…the sound of a realist and fantasist sparring, it reflects an artist still coming into focus on her own thrilling terms.” – ROLLING STONE (4 stars)

December 13, 2019 – New York, NY - 070 Shake – the innovative, genre-defying artist who garnered huge buzz from Kanye West’s 2018 Wyoming sessions – today announces the official release date of her highly-anticipated debut album, MODUS VIVENDI, arriving January 17, 2020 via G.O.O.D. Music/Def Jam Recordings. Simultaneously, Shake releases a new track and video from the album, “Under The Moon,” produced by Dave Hamelin – with additional production, mixing & mastering by Mike Dean, and video directed by Lauren Dunn. She also has announced a world tour beginning in January. (Complete itinerary below.) The album cover was painted by artist Sam Spratt in a collaboration with 070 Shake.
“Under The Moon” follows “Morrow” and “Nice To Have,” which introduced fans to a new side of 070 Shake when they were released simultaneously as the first advance tracks from MODUS VIVENDI. “Morrow” found Shake taking everything she learned during the Wyoming Sessions and transferring it to an up-tempo record that was at once rowdy and ethereal. “Nice To Have” slowed things down as she reflected on a past lover.
MODUS VIVENDI opens the next phase of 070 Shake’s journey. The album brings her reflective style to the spotlight with boundary-pushing creativity and pure emotional honesty as her compass. “I just really go with how I feel in the moment, and then that’s where the writing comes from. It’s like an ongoing disperse of words when I feel something.” In a world obsessed with consumption, Shake is a much-needed breath of fresh air, more than ready to make her impact felt through music. “I want it to make a change in the world. The agenda is bigger than just music.”

Club Soul - Soul Street: Funky Side Of Northern Soul

It’s time to pass the hatchet instead of the talc, and trade in the spin-and-slide for the hook-and-sling and work that dancefloor! Club Soul are proud to present a fresh compilation of 14 hard-edged, kitchen-sink rhythms that demand dance floor attention! Here we showcase the funky side of Northern Soul which has captured the imagination of our soul brothers and sisters across Europe and a growing number of progressive clubs in the U.K.

Our eclectic blend borrows its name from title track “Soul Street” by Ricky Allen; a super-rare cut written and produced by Mel London and originally released to no acclaim on his Chicago based Tam-boo label circa 1968. Allen is joined by familiar faces such as southern soulsters Alder Ray Black & Eddie Bo, our hit artists Betty Harris, Tina Turner & Aaron Neville, compilation debut Lenny McDaniel and unreleased at the time tracks from Josephine Taylor & Alvin Cash.

This new 180gm heavyweight audiophile vinyl ‘Soul Street’ compilation is presented in a single sleeve with new artwork. ‘Soul Street’ joins a growing catalogue of premium music on Charly Records imprint Club Soul - including the 12-track up-front, eclectic, super-rare, funky-edged and feel-good dancefloor soul LP ‘Time & Place’ in conjunction with Soul Shack DJ’s, and newly compiled records that celebrate the clubs of the original Northern Soul Scene - The Scene Club, The Twisted Wheel, Wigan Casino Soul Club, Catacombs and The Golden Torch.

The Allergies - Felony/Rile 'Em Up

The Allergies

Felony/Rile 'Em Up

7"-VinylJAL328V
Jalapeno
31.03.2020

The Allergies are back with a new single A-side, 'Felony' – A storming soul-sensation, dripping with bittersweet emotion and driving, late-night grooves. It marks a return to that classic Allergies sound, full of dusty sampled beats, toughened up with punchy drums and re-worked lyrical loops. A dancefloor sure shot.

On the flip is Rile 'Em Up', a Latin funk bomb that showcases something of a new chapter for The Allergies. As the new album will testify, the duo have swelled their ranks to take in a full touring band, bringing in rapper Andy Cooper, soul diva Marietta Smith, and sax don Mr. Woodnote.

'Rile 'Em Up' represents some of that new live intensity, with its infectious boogaloo samples, party-starting chorus, and club-friendly breakdowns. It's sunshine in a single. And if it's a clue at the new direction The Allergies are taking us in, we like it.

James Brown Revue - Live At The Apollo 1972

Late RSD release gets full release. For the ten years leading up to 1972, the James Brown Revue was an outright superfunk freight train, speeding around the world and crushing all competition. This dominance stretched beyond the charts, too – the group was even more dynamic and exciting on stage, a fact that kept them sleepless and on the move, as audiences demanded more. From 1963 to 1971, James Brown had released not one but three albums recorded live at Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater. The first volume of the series is still rightfully revered today as one of the greatest live albums of all time.

But Volumes II (1968) and III (1971 – aka Revolution Of The Mind) were no slackers either, showing James and his incredible band (with talent including “Pee Wee” Ellis, Fred Wesley, John “Jabo” Starks, Clyde Stubblefield, Maceo Parker, Lyn Collins, Bobby Byrd and many more) at the peak of their respective powers each time, playing a litany of JB hits. Because of this, it will always be a mystery as to why Volume IV, which was recorded at the Apollo on September 14, 1972, was shelved.

This is in no small part because the performers and songs heard here are some of the Godfather of Soul’s (and the JBs’) strongest. But shelved it was, full of fire but languishing for decades in the Polydor vaults. Thankfully we can now put that all behind us, with the first-time-ever-on-vinyl release of this incredible concert, from more than four decades ago. One look at the tracklist will make you salivate: from instrumental JBs classics like “Pass the Peas,” “Gimme Some More” and “Hot Pants Road” to James’ own 1972 smash vocal “There It Is,” the assembled group of musical geniuses – including trombonist and bandleader Fred Wesley; saxophonist St. Clair Pinckney; guitarists Hearlon “Cheese” Martin and Jimmy “Chank” Nolan; bassist Fred Thomas; and Brown himself on organ – smash through James’ New New Super Heavy Funk with ridiculous power, control and panache.

Included here, beyond the music, are in-between song introductions and banter, which bring you right into the front row. This live album stands apart because it was conceptualized to showcase James Brown’s favorite players – The JBs – and vocalists, Bobby Byrd and Lyn Collins, who had their own R & B smashes on the People label. And these supreme talents get plenty of space to shine here: Collins’ “Do Your Thing” and “Think (About It)” and Byrd’s “Keep On Doin’ (What You’re Doin’),” alongside “I Know You Got Soul” simply levitate the bandstand. This future classic is a clear reminder that James Brown was as much of a talent scout as he was a more-than-legendary performer.

And while other “Live At The Apollo” releases focused on his own incredible music, here he gives the stage to the musicians that brought his work to life and kept his legend going for decades. Future generations won’t have to wonder why this music was held back for so long, because they will always have this album – and once you hear the first notes, you won’t worry any more either. You will sit back, let some of the greatest musicians of all time blow your mind, and smile for several days straight. So put the needle on the record and let it begin.

Oneness Of Juju - African Rhythms

Deep Jazz-, Funk – Oneness of Juju’s Debut. Magical, mystical, Afrocentric, progressive words that could be used to describe any number of musical compositions by Sun Ra or his cosmic brothers and sisters, from John to Alice Coltrane, early ‘70s projects on record labels like Detroit’s Tribe or Houston’s Lightin’ or the interests of one Washington, DC native named Jimmy Gray that centered under one, perfect moniker: Black Fire.

Gray spent nearly three decades pushing boundaries as a Black American promoter, distributor and, finally, record label owner. Together with Oneness of Juju’s leader James “Plunky Nkabinde “ Branch, Gray oversaw sixteen releases on Black Fire Records between 1975 and 1996. These are the definitive reissues of five of the label’s key titles; all were lacquered – most directly from master tape - by legendary Los Angeles mastering engineer Bernie Grundman, With this set, Oneness Of Juju and Black Fire’s story burns forth into its fifth decade, its message not tempered, it's sound pure.

It’s cycle, once again, complete. Each release is packaged in a thick, tip-on sleeve and includes a deluxe booklet with extensive notes on the album, the Black Fire collective, and the musical and cultural revolution they created. Limited edition, one time pressing.

Richard Marks - Love Is Gone (The Lost Sessions: 1969-1977)

This deluxe 2xLP package also contains an extensive booklet by Brian Poust detailing Marks’ story. Download card for WAV files included with 2xLP. These songs, found on reels that Marks kept in his home, colour Marks’ stylistic development from his earliest work for the legendary Tuska label in the late ‘60s, through his more mature releases on smaller regional labels into the late ‘70s.

Marks’ story is that of an unsung soul and funk hero; he was a guitarist, vocalist and songwriter whose phone number was in Al Green’s, Barry White’s and Eddie Kendricks’ rolodexes, but his talents have only been heard in sporadic bursts. He and his music are unknown to the majority, but to an obsessive minority, he is a lightning rod: that singular point at which numerous Southern soul and funk musicians converged and exploded, spreading wondrous music in all directions. Marks died of cancer in May 2006. His first album was our Never Satisfied anthology, released posthumously.

He stands out as a most mysterious talent to originate from Atlanta, a city that birthed no shortage of genius, and Love Is Gone: The Lost Sessions 1969-1977 further makes the case for a reassessment of his talents and his place in the soul and funk canon. Previously unreleased soul and funk from legendary Atlanta guitarist, singer & songwriter Richard Marks, the companion piece to Now-Again’s Never Satisfied anthology.

Tall Black Guy & Karizma - A Franklin Black Excursion

We begin 2018 on a slightly spiritual note, and a brand new Excursion. A vinyl-only 7" flip courtesy of a delightful dream-team duo, Tall Black Guy and Karizma.

A real pleasure to welcome these two to the fold, here with 'A Franklin Black Excursion' - a double-header of beautiful re-interpretations of a classic by the Queen of Soul...

For those that don't know, Tall Black Guy is a regular favourite from our sister-label, First Word Records, on which he's released two albums over the past few years ('8 Miles To Moenart' and 'Let's Take A Trip'). Detroit-born Terrel Wallace has built a solid rep in recent times as one of the most revered beatmakers on the planet. Initially pricking peoples ears with a series of incredible edits, he has garnered fans far & wide from Gilles to Jazzy Jeff (with whom he's become a regular stalwart of The PLAYlist Retreat sessions). Production, remixes and collabs have included Moonchild, Little Dragon, Masego, Terrace Martin, Zara McFarlane, The Mouse Outfit and Stro Elliot.

Karizma, aka Kaytronik, aka Kris Klayton, is a deeply prolific cat from Baltimore, releasing music since the mid-nineties on assorted tips, Deep House & Techno, Broken Beat, Hip Hop and Jazz, including his massive club track last year, 'Work It Out'. His collabs include DJ Spen, Kenny Dope, Peven Everett, Osunlade, Atjazz and releases on labels like Strictly Rhythm, Defected, BBE and Sonar Kollectiv. The list of remix projects is remarkable too, including among it Mary J Blige, Lenny Kravitz, Roy Ayers and Jocelyn Brown. Kris has been awarded various accolades as a DJ over the years, his technical prowess on CDJs being the stuff of legends.

'Gifted People' has a low-slung double-time beat as its backbone, cruising across a classic piano loop, whilst the flip sees 'Kaytronik's Gifted & Black Remix' transposing the same groove to a solid deep no-messin' 4/4 beat and bassline warm enough to thaw that pesky Winter ice off your dancing sneaks. Both sides are heads-down lights-off dancery affairs.

These tracks were originally only available from TBG's fan site on a very limited release back in 2016. This is the first time these have ever been dropped on to the masses on a readily-available physical form! Don't expect this one to hang around for very long though... Essential piece of wax.
