Giving title to two separate collections in as many years, 1984’s Dekadance was originally released as a cassette compilation only in Australia. The seminal compendium of extended & re-mixed tracks from ‘The Swing‘ album is set to see its first ever official vinyl release to celebrate the album’s 35th Anniversary. (180 gram vinyl) Dekadance features six extended & re-mixed versions of songs from “THE SWING” album. These six songs are “ORIGINAL SIN”, “I SEND A MESSAGE” & “BURN FOR YOU” – all Nick Launay re-mixed versions & all released as twelve inch singles previously. “DANCING ON THE JETTY”, which is the re-mixed version released as the albums fourth single. Then there’s two rare extended/re-mixed versions of “LOVE IS (WHAT I SAY)” & “MELTING IN THE SUN”. As a bonus to all this, there is a seventh song included on the LP. The cover of the Nancy Sinatra / Lee Hazlewood duet “JACKSON” – performed by the band together with QED’s Jenny Morris duetting with Michael Hutchence on vocals. All of these lovely goodies are cut to a heavyweight 180-gram vinyl LP, featuring artwork replicated from the ultra-rare 12″ Dekadance promo gifted to Australian Radio stations in 1984.

INXS - Mystify-A Musical Journey with Michael Hutchence

When Iong-time INXS manager Chris M. Murphy took on the task/responsibility of being on the creative team for forthcoming already critically acclaimed documentary “Mystify - Michael Hutchence” he had no idea of the emotional rollercoaster that was coming his way. Working with his old friend Mark Edwards, the duo worked to produce something more than just a soundtrack, as the name suggests the listener goes on a journey where rare, unreleased tracks mix with snippets of dialogue, massive INXS hits and hidden gems from both Michael and the band’s back catalogues. The album is divided up into four sections; Side A, Side B, Side C and Side D all of which mix into each other giving the listener a more profound dreamlike experience than the usual soundtrack.

Chris M. Murphy takes up the story: “Over four weeks, Mark and I would work through late, spooky nights together dealing with Michael’s past work while turning it into new work, a new body of work. There were plenty of tears of remembrance along with tears of joy as we were doing something Michael would love. Late one night, Mark called me from the studio yelling: ‘Mate, there are ghosts everywhere flying around the room”’. He described: ‘every time I could not decide if Michael would like the direction of a track he would get down on his knees to pray to Michael and God’ and he said, they would always answer him.”

‘Mystify – Michael Hutchence’ is a feature-length documentary about the troubled heart and soul of Michael Hutchence directed by filmmaker Richard Lowenstein who collaborated extensively with the band throughout their career directing eighteen INXS videos as well as three for Hutchence solo projects and Michael’s acting debut ‘Dogs In Space’. A single screening at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York made headlines around the world. Screen Daily has lauded the film as showing that Hutchence ‘Belongs in the same company as Mick Jagger, Jim Morrison, and Robert Plant’, and that the film ‘is a more than worthy tribute.’

janet. is the fifth studio album by Janet Jackson, released on 18th May, 1993, through Virgin Records. Prior to its release, Jackson was at the center of a high-profile bidding war over her recording contract. In 1991, her original label A&M sought to renew her contract, but after meeting with then Virgin owner Richard Branson, she signed with the label. The contract was worth an estimated $40 million, making her the world’s then-highest paid musical act. UMC are proud to announce this 180 gram black vinyl reissue set to be released on June 14th to align with Janet's performance at Glastonbury Festival.

King Prawn - The Fabulous New Sounds Of…

From the early ‘90s King Prawn’s infectious blend of ska, hip-hop & punk rock earned them a reputation as one of the most entertaining live acts coming out of London. The rock press loved their sense of unpredictability and their huge fanbase adored their ability to simultaneously implode and explode on stage. In 2003 the band decided to split. Their farewell show to a sold out Forum was testament to the growing popularity of the band.

It took a request from the infamous BOOMTOWN festival in 2013 to headline the DEVIL KICKS stage to re-unite the members and for them to discover a new audience whose enthusiasm for the band had grown and were embraced as true pioneers of mid 90’s ska-punk scene.

The fifth studio album from London’s ska-punkers KING PRAWN, and their first since they reformed in 2013, takes the listener through a vibrant and eclectic journey through their musical heritage.

Listening Center - Retrieving

The first of late June’s brace of killer new Polytechnic Youth full lengths sees the welcome return of David Mason’s revered Listening Center. The Brooklyn based synth maestro has a slew of fabulous long sold out releases on PY, Ghost Box and Texte Und Töne.

“Retrieving” is right up with his very best- a fabulous 11 track collection, rich on a fondness for everything from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop to lost ‘80s gaming consoles, imagined VHS soundtracks and 70s’ kids science programme themes to the work of kraut heavyweights like Michael Rother’s early post Neu! solo work and all stops in between. Often playful, always diverse and with extraordinary depth- this is just wonderful!

David himself, adds “Retrieving” is a selection of analogue synth essays recorded between 2016 and 2018. It takes a look at submerged psychic processes and the effects of elusive archetypes which are manifested in the world. Our perception and memory are repeatedly called into question; we continue to 'see' things which are no longer present, and too easily explainable artifacts continue to tug at the edges of our minds. Employing (n)ear tautologies and imaginary helio-technologies, once straightforward narratives immediately break down, and where biography meets geometry we discover a schism in certainty, illusions cracked beyond repair”.

Dressed in another killer Nick Taylor (reverse board) sleeve, this one is just gorgeous.

LUC PESTANG & PIERRE HENRY - SAINT-EXUPÉRY

During his long and illustrious career the French composer and musique concrète pioneer Pierre Henry created a lare amount of incidental music to accompany literary texts, both on record and for the stage, from Jules Verne to Victor Hugo, from Lautréamont to Antonin Artaud. This incredibly rare LP from 1959 is a radio play about the life of French pilot and writer Antoine de Saint Exupéry, based on the 1956 book by Luc Estang on the subject. The interpreters are a small theater troupe including French actor Paul Meurisse (1912-1979), famous for popular films and as a member of national theater company, La Comédie Française. Underlying key scenes, Pierre Henry’s contribution to the play consists of electronic and musique concrète sounds, adding a contemporary dimension to the text. A beautiful piece from one of the mid-20th century's truly brilliant sonic explorers.

Lucifer - Lucifer II

Lucifer

Lucifer II

2x12inch190759336113
Sony Music
16.07.2019

Product Information

The second coming of heavy rockers Lucifer! After being formed back in 2014 and releasing the much-acclaimed »Lucifer I« via Rise Above in 2015, vocalist Johanna Sadonis has teamed up with Nicke Andersson (Entombed, The Hellacopters, Imperial State Electric) to reshape Lucifer. With the addition of Robin Tidebrink (guitar), Alexandr Mayr (bass) and Dead Lord’s Martin Nordin (guitar), Lucifer successfully transformed into a whole new beast. While they are still citing Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Blue Öyster Cult, Steppenwolf, 70’s Heart and Fleetwood Mac as influences, the songwriting, sound and diversity of »Lucifer II« mark a giant leap compared to the debut.

The result are addictive tracks ranging from instant sing-alongs (»California Son«) to moody ballads (»Dreamer«) and Sabbath-ian doom (»Faux Pharaoh«). Recorded in the summer of 2017 at Nicke’s studio The Honk Palace, in Stockholm, and mixed by Swedish producer Ola Ersfjord (Tribulation, Primordial) at Cuervo Recording Services in Madrid, »Lucifer II« turns out to be a prime example how to properly transfer the undying spirit of 70’s hard rock into this day and age.

Lunch Lady - Angel

Lunch Lady

Upset the Rhythm
23.08.2019

LUNCH LADY are a sparky group from Los Angeles redolent of the desert heat, pining hearts and that chorus-soaked cloak of sound held dear by followers of British early 80s post-punk.
Numbering four, Lunch Lady consist of Rachel Birke (vocals), Juan Velasquez (guitar), Victor Herrera (bass) and Robert Wolfe (drums). The band began in 2017 when Velasquez asked Birke if she’d like to start a new music project with him, their respective other groups Abe Vigoda and Heller Keller having co-existed in LA’s DIY orbit. Birke explains that they “immediately decided upon making the new band a kind of love letter to Kitsch.”
Lunch Lady’s dreamy punk forays into country ballad territory certainly swoop into sentiment, but its the melancholy of artifice that defines their outlook. “I like the way Susan Sontag explains Kitsch as being something that lacks the context or materials to reach the effect it sets out to achieve. Also that tragic aspect of Kitsch, we loved the futility of how literal it is, we wanted to evoke that with our band name and definitely my lyrics” illuminates Birke further.

Lunch Lady recruited friends Herrera and Wolfe into the rhythm section, swiftly recorded a demo and started playing live. The bands’ music began to grow into sun-warped vignettes, often miniaturist character-studies in outlook. These songs are studded with unquiet recollection, all delivered with a curious objectivity that pulls the listener into the circle. Birke’s vocal is unhurried and assured, pressing her characters’ motives and words into the sprightly guitar trails and jogged rhythms that characterise the sound of the band. During the summer of 2018, Lunch Lady had assembled the tracks for their debut album, which they took into the studio towards the year’s close. Lunch Lady’s debut album, ‘Angel’ was recorded at Gauchos Electronics, a key studio in the history of Los Angeles punk and the place where many of their peers had laid down albums previously, including Gun Outfit, Feels, Ty Segall and No Age. Pascal Stevenson produced the album, whilst Scott Cornish helped engineer and mix. Mikey Young then mastered this vibrant record.

‘Angel’ is an album of resounding yearning, of cold fire and hot, sticky blood. It’s an album of troubled tales, buried hearts and wandering homeward. Throughout, Birke’s narrative-heavy lyrics keep things themed and theatrical. This is most strongly felt on cinematic swirls of song like ‘Preacher Man’ and clicky, strummer ’Sweet One’. The stunning track ‘Dolores’ creeps and ranges around under a dark cloud of disclosure. Struck chords hang in the air like smoke whilst Birke intones “you say he’s a bad man, and a killer too, and you tell me like I don’t know.” Birke wrote those lyrics from the perspective of the female character in Eddie Noack's serial-killer C&W jaunt of the same name. The song rattles with craving, whilst the guitars wheel and loop, strident drums pinpointing. ‘Window’ whirls by with all the flourish of a card trick. Drums tumble whilst the guitar line twists through the taut stretch and sprint of the bass turns. Birke’s low-slung yet smouldering vocal confesses that “my hands are as clean as a remembered thing, my hands are as clean as I want them to be.”

Thematically, Lunch Lady’s debut cascades with crumpled wishes and hotly recalled visions. Throughout writing the lyrics for the album Birke spells out that she’s “been trying to tackle my own feelings about nostalgia, especially that romanticisation of one’s own childhood. The album’s also about that painful feeling of looking at a family album and trying to reconcile yourself with the kid you see in the photograph. ‘My Dead Dog’ is about that and became one of my favourite songs on the album for that reason.” The album swims with a type of anxious nostalgia. Birke’s cover art of a flaming Cadillac falling through the sky is a case in point. “I never had a love like the love that I never had” sings a resigned Birke towards the summit of ‘My Dead Dog’. Whilst ’Preacher Man’ addresses the problem of nostalgia more on a cultural level, a host of avenging angels, sisters in white robes and gun-toting men crop up elsewhere via the cool detachment of time passed. You get the feeling that Lunch Lady prefer to face these dangers face on. They seem most at home staring down the uneasy. See the simmering clamour of ‘Young Bride’ and ‘Sister’ with its swooning bloom of melody for further evidence. This sense of fight or flight is keenly felt in ‘Snakes’ too. Herrera’s bassline nags at Wolfe’s beat, whilst Velasquez’s chiming guitar spills wistfully. “Cold sweat, smooth hands, hot blood. Your babes are crying, your life’s cast in iron now” evokes Birke in a sweetly hushed vocal as relaxed as casual conversation.

Lunch Lady turn on all the lights in this haunted house of an album. Each room populated by a vividly drawn cast of whispered hopes and threatening dreams. ‘Angel’ is an album that murmurs like a river down the staircase, exploding with unexpected melodrama, brandishing it’s desire like a weapon. Let it take you by the hand and guide you out into the night. Out into the glimmer, before the stars go out and the warmth of the sun returns to cool passions.

Melodien - Enantiodromia

The second of two ace new Polytechnic Youth LPs for late June; this one sees Liverpool based, Harry Sumnall’s Melodien debut on PY after releases on sister label Deep Distance amongst others. Eight kosmische flavoured synth pop nuggets, heavy on nods to the Sky label oeuvre of later Cluster, Wolfgang Reichmann, Harald Grosskopf, Deutsche Wertarbeit and co; yet with a freshness and boldness very much of today.

Each track is underpinned in the most part by driving, sequenced motorik rhythms hugely recommended to all fans of the above…

The LPs’ title “Enanriodromia” is the constancy of change and the emergence of the unconscious diametric in the course of time - everything that exists turns into its opposite (Carl Jung); and Harry himself describes the album as an idyllic backdrop to an imagined world where “Iasos’ Crystal Vista is repeated on loop across all TV channels, where Luboš Fišer composes Olympic gold medal anthems, where Marcel Schwob and Jane de La Vaudère works are free from your local book exchange, where Josef Svoboda designed your local shopping center, where Richard Pinhas plays at your village fete, and the most popular YouTube channels give advice on sequencer ratcheting and psychopharmacology!”

Michel Samson & Rebecca Samson - The Claviorganum & The Violin

This is the first published recording of Michel Samson since his unparalleled work with Albert Ayler’s quintet in the late 1960s. Samson’s violin playing is outstanding. His great exuberance and ecstasy, all sliding through an interlocking sadness.

The collection on this LP holds numerous 17th-Century works of the Italian baroque, performed by Michel Samson and his wife, Rebecca. It showcases some of the earliest music composed for the violin as a featured soloist. Rebecca accompanies on a replica – believed to be the only extant replica in the United States – of the claviorganum, a rare and curious instrument that traces back to the 15th century. Comprised of both an organ and a harpsichord integrated into a single case, the claviorganum harkens to a time of experimentation and artistry of design. Michel’s violin was made by Francesco Gobetti in 1718; its sound carries beautifully throughout the room. Samson worked as a dealer of rare and antique violins for many years, and has an ear for majestic craftsmanship. The style adopted by Italian composers during the baroque was one of heightened lyricism, emotion, and ornamentation, especially when voiced through the violin; it is no accident that Michel’s unique approach to articulation and intonation speaks both to the present and the past.

In these recordings you can hear the same joy dripping across the strings, as in his days with Ayler. It shows what beauty can be instilled inside someone. Rebecca’s playing is exquisite, too, complimenting each movement as they fold on.

Middle Kids - New Songs For Old Problems

Australian trio Middle Kids (Hannah Joy, Harry Day and Tim Fitz) announce that they will release a six-track mini-album entitled New Songs For Old Problems on May 24th, 2019, through Lucky Number. To celebrate the announcement, the band have shared a new single and video Real Thing. A soaring anthemic track, “Real Thing” ruminates on our “lifelong quest for meaning”, says Hannah. “It’s the quiet, persistent voice in the stillness that constantly checks to see if you truly think you’ve found the thing you’re looking for.” Watch the Marie Pangaud directed clip now.

The mini-album, recorded at the band’s own studio in Sydney and produced by Tim Fitz, follows hot on the heels of what was a massive 2018 for Middle Kids and the May release of their critically acclaimed debut album Lost Friends. The band toured the world, including UK and European dates with Bloc Party and a sold out show at London’s Village Underground, as well as performing on several US TV shows including Conan, Jimmy Kimmel and The Late Late Show with James Corden.

Back home in Australia they were nominated for an ARIA, Australia's highest musical honor and earlier this year triple j gave them the prestigious Album of the Year award saying "Lost Friends possesses a chemistry that can't be faked. Tim Fitz and Harry Day bring a wealth of energy and inventive production but it's Hannah Joy's vocals that are the heart and soul of their music. Her shiver-inducing voice ranges from beautifully controlled to heedlessly raw as she renders the drama, confusion, and honesty in Middle Kids' lyrics."

In June the band will return to play their largest UK headline show to-date at London’s Heaven. Further, the band will also open for Local Natives throughout the US and have a sold-out Australian headline tour. All dates listed below.

Ministry - Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste

Ministry successfully combined industrial heavy metal and electronic beats with a punk attitude. Drawing heavy on the sampler, synthesized sounds and thick layers of distorted guitars, this group preceded highly successful acts such as Fear Factory and Nine Inch Nails. Their fourth album The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste (1989) followed up on their successful effort The Land Of Rape And Honey [MOVLP651]. When released, the album cracked the Billboard Top 200. It’s proof that the fanbase of these guitar heavy synth slingers is quite sizeable, so say the least.

The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste is available as a limited edition of 1500 numbered copies on coloured (clear & black mixed) vinyl.

Another insane and fuzzy Italian Library release from 1971 - Nello Ciangherotti aka Nenty & Silvano Chimenti "SONORITA' NEL LAVORO", originally out of the vaults of Globe Records. A top-notch set of sleazy Psych, dope Progressive riffs and Experimental Rock themed music produced to score some obscure documentaries about world of work. Mad section of evil Psychedelic guitars and fuzzy Wah Wah by the great guitarist Silvano Chimenti (the man behind 'Droga' and further Library grails) and studio arrangements by maestro and orchestra director Nello Ciangherotti. The Nits 1986 album Henk is considered as one of their best studio albums. Three years after their highlight Omsk they recorded an album which is constructed by the use of samples and surrealistic sounds. “Port of Amsterdam” and “Bike in Head” are two examples of how their sounds changed during the years. The album was recorded as a three-piece, because Michiel Peters (guitar) left the band. The layered song “Bike In Head” became a fan favorite, sunny and sparkling in every way possible. Henk is a must have for every Nits and pop music fan.

The Nits are a Dutch art-pop-rock group, founded in 1974 in Amsterdam. Their musical style has varied over the years, as has their line-up, but the core members are lead singer and lyricist Henk Hofstede, Robert Jan Stips on keyboards (worked with Supersister, Gruppo Sportivo, The Golden Earring) and Rob Kloet on drums.

1983. A distinct malaise afflicted the nation. The UK was about to re-elect Margaret Thatcher by a landslide, cruise missiles arrived at Greenham Common in Berkshire, six people were killed by the IRA outside Harrods, nuclear reactors suffered system failure in the USA, Russia, Argentina and Germany. The Face magazine showed an exhausted youth that everything was OK as long as you looked ‘right’. A curious revisionism had become prevalent. The Jam had become the Style Council and style itself had taken precedence over substance: Mod was back, early rock and roll was back (thank you Shaking Stevens). Even Bowie had ditched the gloom for flash, but actually it was all shit.
Some wanted out. The socially and politically ambitious ‘anarcho-punk’ scene that clustered around Crass and the Poison Girls was encouraging people to learn the practical means of self sufficiency, be it squatting, hot-wiring your electricity from the nearest lamppost or making your own chemical toilet. The associated Peace Convoy was gathering people if not speed, espousing a roving kind of communal living as a form of Non Violent Direct Action.
Normal Hawaiians were based between Thornton Heath and the Brixton squat scene encircling the anarchist bookshop at 121 Railton Road. The brutal 1981 Brixton Riots and the heavy-handed policing that followed had fostered a billowing sense of conflict with state forces. Hawaiians drummer Noel Blandon says of that period “we were post-Falklands and five years into Thatcher. She was out to destroy all the institutions we held dear.” Getting out of lockstep with Thatcherism seemed imperative. Adding to the overriding sense of restless anxiety, close friend and band associate Martin Pawson took his life in July 1983.
Following the release of More Wealth Than Money (Illuminated, 1982), there was an impetus to make good on hard won achievements. Rehearsal and writing sessions resumed in the early months of 1983 at Intergalactic Arts Studios, off the Old Kent Rd in London. IGA was a ramshackle, semi-residential rehearsal space where the Hawaiians – none of them ‘natural’ musicians - would often play and rehearse in the dark, recording demos onto cassette.

Illuminated Records had been sending roster artists to Foel Studios in Powys, Wales for years, and it had become a kind of refuge for the Hawaiians. As Guy Smith says of that summer “Canary Wharf had been built. The squat scene was closing down. We had to get out. We got in the bus and hit the road.” Studio owner/manager (and Hawkwind/Amon
Duul II alumnus) Dave Anderson was welcoming, unruffled and accommodating when around a dozen band members, friends and family emerged from the ‘mini-peace convoy’ of vehicles into the hazy, pastoral care of the warm, Welsh countryside. Although Foel was and is a residential studio, the very number of people who showed up meant some were kipping down where they could, sleeping in vans and cars for two weeks.
Whereas More Wealth Than Money had evolved in the recording studio, What’s Going On began to develop as a more pre-meditated, albeit piecemeal work. Quiet Village and the unreleased Outpost had already been finished at Foel in February 1983. Recording Engineer Brian Snelling recalls how the Hawaiians approach to making the album was
unconventional and spontaneous, revelling in chance and openness. Rehearsal tapes from IGA were played along to, and and improvisations allowed to develop, with further layers of sound accreting (as can be heard on the final cut of Big Lies). Free Tibet was created by the band playing together exploratively (guitars and their sounds were ‘treated’ with a penny whistle and a rusty screwdriver) with Snelling waiting to hit ‘Record’ until he heard that something interesting was coalescing. He recalls the sessions being initially
unorthodox, but eventually settling into a friendly, productive and very familial affair. Rotating visitors came to the mixing desk to hear playbacks and offer their thoughts. Away from the ‘peacelessness’ of London, the space and security of both the studio and the countryside had enabled the Family Hawaii to make good progress.
Mixed tapes were then taken by Dave Andersen and Guy Smith to Charly Records’ editing studio in London where Andersen had worked and was able to pull downtime. Here they spliced the recordings into an irregular yet coherent, flowing work, Side One being intentionally and meticulously honed as a seamless and inventive narrative. Recalling the
rudimentary nature of both the equipment and the demo tapes brought in, Snelling now views the end result as ‘brilliant’ though his initial feeling on hearing the edited and mastered LP was that the record had been ‘cut to pieces’. Final masters were then EQ’d and cut by Graeme Durham at the newly opened Exchange Mastering Studios in Camden.
And then nothing happened. Unbeknownst to the band, Illuminated Records were getting into deep financial problems and by early 1984 were struggling to release label-saving albums from Throbbing Gristle, 400 Blows and Kevin Ayers. Meetings with company boss Keith Bagley were often held in dusty old daytime drinking clubs around the Fulham Road,
but the label was in its death throes. Test pressings sounded good but the printing of the cover was all wrong. The cover image was too green, though thankfully a final batch had this corrected to a more appropriate sepia hue. As it became clear that the release was in danger of a catastrophic failure without the goodwill of distributors and promotors,
the label gave the band 250 copies to sell as a ‘Sorry for Fucking Up goodbye present’, but the record shops wouldn’t touch them. The company had been blacklisted. Smith and Alun ‘Wilf’ Williams screen printed the label name off the LP to distance it from disaster, but to
little avail. This intricate, challenging and engaging work had been failed by poor circumstance.

Tolkien explores the formative years of the orphaned author as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school.

Of the soundtrack, composer Thomas Newman (Skyfall, Wall-E, Finding Nemo, Six Feet Under) says: “Because J.R.R. Tolkien is embedded in popular culture, and because his work and outlook have been the subjects of much interpretation, I wanted to write music for Tolkien that would honor his ethos, his individualism, without being slavish to it. The musical vocabulary draws from a wide swath of instrumental and vocal colors, from winds with string accompaniment to solo voice in hushed pianissimo. There is Swedish kantélé, mandolin and monochord intersecting bell rhythms and piano-derived ambiences. The object is to give musical identity to the nascent feelings of the young storyteller from Birmingham, only just beginning to stretch his wings. And because much of the story is seen through the prism of his time spent in the trenches of World War I, there is that parallel experience of epic conflict that deepens my feeling for his language and, I hope, lets sound, noise, and melody rise up and sing.”

Directed by Dome Karukoski and written by David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford, Tolkien explores the formative years of the renowned author’s life as he finds friendship, courage and inspiration among a fellow group of writers and artists at school. Their brotherhood strengthens as they grow up and weather love and loss together, including Tolkien’s tumultuous courtship of his beloved Edith Bratt, until the outbreak of the First World War which threatens to tear their fellowship apart. All of these experiences would later inspire Tolkien to write his famous Middle-earth novels, like The Hobbit and Lord of The Rings.

This is a limited edition of 500 numbered copies on gold & black marbled vinyl. The LP package contains a 4-page booklet with images, credits and an introduction/prologue by Dome Karukoski, the director of Tolkien.

Original Soundtrack - Outlander Season 2

This soundtrack includes original music from Outlander season 2, the critically acclaimed series by Emmy award-winning composer Bear McCreary and vocal performances by Raya Yarbrough (“The Skye Boat Song”) and Griogair Labhruidh (“Je Suis Prest”, “Moch Sa Mhadainn”). The score ranges from the ornate halls of Baroque Parisian courts, to muddy Scottish battlefields during the Jacobite uprising. The first half presents music from Paris, beginning with the French version of the “Skye Boat Song.” Track 11, the “Jacobite” version of that same song, shifts the tone radically to music from the Scotland episodes. “Leave the Past Behind” concludes with one of the most luscious and lyrical orchestral passages McCreary ever composed. As with his other scores, McCreary has proven to be a careful and crafty composer. He has a knack for finding the right instrumentation to produce the greatest and most meaningful effect within his scores.

Outlander season 2 is available as a limited edition of 500 individually numbered copies on coloured (gold & black) vinyl.

Patience - Dizzy Spells

Patience began as bedroom synth project for songwriter Roxanne Clifford after the break up of her acclaimed indie pop band Veronica Falls. Born out of a desire to experiment with a new sound and analogue synthesizers, the project has since grown to become an all-encompassing persona and serves as the main vehicle for the full emotional spectrum always latent in Clifford’s songwriting. From her first long-sold-out 7” singles on Night School, her knack for melodic hooks and oblique emotional stances already contained a glistening sheen of promise. ‘Dizzy Spells’ serves as an intimate portrait of Clifford’s creative adventure, almost diaristic, conceived and recorded in her home studio, as well as with collaborators Todd Edwards (Daft Punk/Uk Garage fame), Lewis Cook (Free Love/Happy Meals) and engineer Misha Hering (Virginia Wing). Dizzy Spells delivers a debut album that twists Clifford’s songwriting into new shapes and ecstasies. The album dances around melancholy, thrown to the floor like a bad dream to be circled, emerging bright-eyed into the early morning full of hope. The Girls Are Chewing Gum (produced by Todd Edwards) bursts open Dizzy Spells like fresh fruit: sweet and rich with a synth-bass line beamed down from Chicago House heaven. Exquisitely sung by Clifford, it’s a wonderful, funky, instant-classic hinting at sexuality and memories dredged from our bodies’ secrets. The bouncy production expertly renders the addictive power of our ephemeral pleasures. Living Things Don’t Last chases themes of longing and loss, opening up into a life affirming chorus that sings of transience, the passing of time and railing against inertia. It’s the perfect example of a song formula that Roxanne Clifford has almost patented: simple and cutting straight to the point. There are shades of Strawberry Switchblade or French synth pop pioneer Jacno in the happy/sad dichotomy and it is all the better for it. Dizzy Spells features all three long-sold out singles, embedded in the full depth of Patience’s soundworld they fit like pieces of a puzzle. White Of An Eye, The Church and The Pressure—all recorded in Clifford’s former home of Glasgow—crackle with razor sharp melodies and dancefloor-ready dynamics. There are exciting additions to Patience’s sonic palette, brought into sharp relief on Voices In The Sand. In this song, a plaintive Clifford enunciates a heart-torn plea to the antagonist, a mournful cascade of synths and haunting vocals evocative of AC Marias, a sepia-toned ode to anxiety, “a storm is on the way”. On No Roses, a Vince Clarkesque production belies a sunburnt sadness. Clifford defiantly sings “you would go out tonight, but there’s nowhere you like,” describing a disenchantment with her adopted city of Los Angeles, she longs for home in a singular refrain “No roses… no roses for us.” An ode to English folk singer Shirley Collins, a surprising yet innate influence throughout Clifford’s work. On Moral Damage, former Veronica Falls bandmate Marion Herbain joins Clifford on an anglo-french duet that feels instant and spontaneous, a cutting comment on emotional accountability. More than a vehicle for Roxanne Clifford’s songwriting prowess, Patience is holding our hand through the night, dancing with tears in our eyes, dizzy and spellbound.
