TROPIKAL CAMEL - AWAKENING SPIRITS

“Those are the spirits of my ancestors calling from the Mellah of Meknes, from the mountains of Kurdistan. The unheard voices of my culture, that was taken from me. I shall talk to the spirits, I will heal the wounds. I was asleep, now I am awaken.”

Berlin based, Jerusalem pioneer Roi Assayag aka Tropikal Camel serves up his fantastic new album, ‘Awakening Spirits’ on Brussels based label Rebel Up Records, distilling 20 years of musical experience.

The album title ‘Awakening Spirits’ is a wordplay: in Hebrew & Arabic, winds, spirits & ghosts are the same word - Ruaah. This title is polysemic: spirits are representing the mystic research that is eternal, winds are representing drama and conflict , ghosts are the voices from the past... the word awakening symbolizes the future.

Makom in Hebrew, Maqam in Arabic, which means ‘place’ but is also the name of the melodic system of Arabic music, theory which Roi Assayag has taught himself from youtube tutorials, trying to deepen his connection with the melodies that opened his soul. In those quarter tones he found the drama that he is so connected to. One that is making him feel home.

As Tropikal Camel he casts a spell over audiences from Europe to Africa through the Middle East by blending percussion with a psychedelic edge at places like Nuits Sonores and Nyege Nyege. It is a sound that draws on his Middle Eastern and North African heritage and heads into the future. In the artist’s unique way he fuses elements into a special blend of driven bass, deep pads and chopped chants for a musical journey that continues on this spellbinding new offering.

Roi Assayag: “In order to maintain this raw magic I recorded most of the album live in one take, the way I perform it live on stage. My vision was to create a ceremony in which one experience a release, from his own self, in order to get to their unknown dimension.”

On the A side, deeply moving opener ‘Deja Groove’ immediately sinks you into an enchanting
world of percussive flurries and weightless beats, a ballad of longing to a lost love, was written in dark times with a glimmer of hope.

‘The Spirits’ is a sparse and intoxicating brew of churning drums and Syrian sufi chanting, influenced by music of Aleppo in Syria. Sufi music has a mystic quality, opening the heart and cleansing the soul. This track is in Maqam Sabah, a modus that is representing youth and the process of maturity.

‘Waves’ is a loose and languid mix of lurching grooves, traditional percussion and edgy synth drones that trap you in a trance. It is about the waves of the mediterranean carrying rubber ships. Roi Assayag: “On stage I always dedicate this track to refugees from Syria, reminding me of pictures of my grandmother escaping the war in Europe.”

On the B side, the pressure then builds again with the clattering drums and hits of ‘Zachotronic’. Roi Assayag: “Zacho is the city my great grandfather who came from Kurdistan. It is based on the rhythm of the Davul, a crazy percussion that needs no soundsystem to make the people dance.”

The excellent ‘Beeehave’ slips into darker, almost techno leaning territory. It’s about being wild, not giving a fuck, in a club in Berlin, high!
‘Seashells’ mixes all of the above into an electrifying trip through world sounds that brings plenty of new influences to the dance floor. A track that is based on a memory of a loved one, collecting seashells on a beach.

The moodiness continues on bonus track ‘Dreamshadow’ with its eerie melodies and gently turning drums.

Roi Assayag: ‘Awakening Spirits’ is the soundtrack of my confession room. From moments of loneliness in my room in cold winter, to high peaks, talking to my spirits directly. It is a journey, and now you are a part of the awakening. The spirits are calling - tonight!

a deeply uplifting and spiritual record from a fascinating artist.

Double Geography - Flights

Let's face it, no one really knows where they're going, so the best we can do is enjoy the ride - a sentiment captured perfectly by the high altitude ambient of 'Flights',
Double Geography's new release on the Growing Bin.

Embracing the unpredictable, Duncan Thornley married melodic fragments with semi-generative computer process and random filter interactions, an aleatory approach to music therapy during the existential funk of the first Lockdown. The unhurried melodies, weightless within plumes of reverb and delay, conjure the feeling of long distance air travel with All Nippon - that pensive delirium stimulated by varying air pressure, broken sleep and the most welcome pause in your everyday life. Remote snippets of news reports, street noise and conversation, plundered from cassette dictaphone and a Spanish language tape the artist found in the loft sit low in the mix, the barely audible sound of the pilot and passenger, extras in your everyday experience.

Contemplative and comforting, 'Flights' is a gentle reminder to be present, delivered with a rare beauty.

Kuzma Palkin - Stadion Sever

Saint Petersburg-based Kuzma Palkin returns to GOST Zvuk with a new series, Memont. GOST has been expanding its presence for several years through sublabels Instrument and Archive, as well as releases from GOST family members on their own labels. Flaty's experiments can be found on the ANWO label, while OL has issued a number of releases through Asyncro. For Palkin, Memont represents a return to his roots. The artwork for the first release, stadion sever, features the original packaging of Moment universal superglue, something that will be familiar to every Russian who lived through the 1990s. The album is named after the eponymous stadium in Palkin's hometown of Severodvinsk, which is displayed on the back cover. Sever represented a kind of playing field in childhood, but has now come to stand in as a metaphor for daily life. The visual landscape of modern Russian life points back to Sever.

Musically, stadion sever is also a return to Palkin's roots. The echoes of early IDM that kickstarted his career in the beginning of the 2000s are on display here. While the music is thoughtful and attentive to detail, traces of irony can be identified among the seriousness, not least in the title of the series and the track synth1 power user. The same ironic touch makes its mark on the album's sound. Palkin borrows the recognizable textures of club music, but drastically modifies their context and transforms them into something altogether more thought-provoking and inscrutable. Palkin's unique sound and the beauty of his music can be found in the balance between retrospection and looking ahead, where austerity meets humour.

RUBBA - IN MOTION

IN MOTION

12inchFR03LP
Farfalla Records
19.06.2019

L’Illustration Musicale, Sonimage, Técipress-In Editions (Timing), Musax, Freesound,
Montparnasse 2000 in France but also De Wolfe and Chappell in England, every of these
sound illustration labels have in common to bring out as a legendary spectre the name of Jacky
Giordano and his aliases. Widespread practice in the library music world, Joachim Sherylee,
chosen for the In Motion album, is one of his plentiful aliases (with José Pharos, Jacky
Nodaro, Gruppo Sounds, Rubba...) used by the french composer, that we regain as well for
Black Devil with Bernard Fèvre or even for the Shifters with Yan Tregger.
For his enthronement on the mythical English label De Wolfe, it's under the obscure name of
the Rubba collective that Jacky Giordano aka Joachim Sherylee sneaked in the londonian De
Wolfe studios with the companionship of British colleagues such as John Hyde (aka John
Saunders, James Harrington, Astral sounds or even Wozo) and his wife Monice Hyde (aka
Monica Beale), Alan Howe (aka John Collins), Robert Poole and Tim Broughton.
Published in 1980, the In Motion: Modern Progressive Group Sounds Played By Rubba LP
and its minimalistic and utilitarian red record cover which contains 13 tracks, mainly composed
by Joachim "Giordano" Sherylee and was never reissued since then. This record became cult
over time; it will have taken that the Hip-Hop world seizes it in order to dig out from the
disregarded and underestimated musical gems graveyard. First of all with beatmaker Madlib
and Freddie Gibbs in 2011 with the track “Thuggin'”, in which he sampled the track “Way Star”,
also used more recently by Mil and the rapper Westside Gunn on his track “Brains Flew” by
(1964 Version).
Nearly 40 years after, the Farfalla Records label, after publishing Timing Archives, presents
another aspect more progressive and psychedelic of the multi-faceted composer Jacky
Giordano by fully reissuing at last this coveted, mysterious and mesmerizing "Rubba". Very
desired by crate-diggers, In Motion appears in the want-list of plenty enthusiasts in this
enigmatic world of the library music. (Erwann Pacaud)

Delonte Rivers - Delonte In Dub

Continuing to deliver Sounds From The Void, XVI Records are proud to welcome London based Producer Delonte Rivers back to the label, with his brand new EP ‘Delonte In Dub’ Having previously released his ‘Midnight Congas’ EP back in 2018 (as well as a slew of edits and releases with Banana Hill, Love Above Recordings and more) Delonte now channels an elevated state of consciousness into a new dubbed out, subterranean sonic offering.

Returning with the galvanising track ‘Rise Again’, Delonte enlists the vocals of Sir Moon (also the voice of local hellraisers Muckspreader) giving a furious manifesto on the state of the union. Psyched out guitar stabs reverberate ripple across a turbulent sea of low end frequencies, as a rock-steady rhythm section holds the line. ‘Dub Again’ unsurprisingly strips back the original into a state of ethereal and reverb soaked hypnosis. ‘Cosmic Frequencies’ bring a cosmic slice of bass weight, whilst ‘One For Road’ injects a surreal, eerie atmosphere into the proceedings. This record is one for a hazed-summer in a strange dystopian world.

Monotone is setting out on a mission to make 2020 one of the most productive years of the 19 since its inception. Exzakt teams up with fellow Electro Breaks legend, BFX and the output is very strong. Originally produced for submission to an Egyptian Lover compilation, Nasty girl is laced with vocoder vocals as well as a female voice over hard hitting bass beats and deep baselines. This is a tune tailored for the club however retains its depth like many Exzakt & BFX tunes usually do. With Nasty Beats is the instrumental. As if Side A comes just as strong. Starting with BFX, Jelly offers his signature melodic sound along with low end frequencies all culminating into a solid Electro tune. Finally a deep cut from Exzakt, Taking Over The System is a perfect end to this future classic vinyl.

Peak Oil is proud to present Invariant, the first LP in three years from Russia's best kept electronic music secret: Hoavi. Originally intended for pre-pandemic release, this collection of emotive and intricate homages to the slippery nature of genre has only intensified in relevancy and urgency. From alt sci-fi dimension floor-filler "Streamline" to "Dver", a contemplative evocation of a world in which time collapsed in on itself and liquid had embraced footwork, to the propulsive modular dub-tech evisceration of "Tessera" closing out the LP, Hoavi adroitly demonstrates why he should be considered amongst Russia's finest cultural exports. A gifted producer with a workaholic drive, these eight tracks are but a sample of his prodigious breath and grasp on the electronic music continuum, a clear harbinger of auspicious things to come for Hoavi.

returns to the first influences of Birdy Nam Nam: funk, rap, and trap, mixed in their very electro style since the Manual For Successful
Rioting released in 2009. "We want to make music that speaks to people beyond how it was made. We want to express emotions,
happy or sad or a little emo, and that the listener does not stick to the form but to the substance, "says Little Mike. And on the program
of this new effort, new collaborations with singers, a great first for the group: the Franco-Vietnamese Mai Lan, who sings on the title
Dance or Die, and the Swedish Elliphant, which we find on the next single, Lazers From My Heart.

Bochum Welt - Desktop Robotics & Feelings on a Screen (25th Anniversary Edition)

Bochum Welt's 2019 LP 'Seafire' and its accompanying remix album are two of the Central Processing Unit label's most beloved releases. However, links between the two parties run far deeper than just those records.

You see, the tracks that Gianluigi Di Costanzo cut as Bochum Welt in the 1990s and 2000s are in the very DNA of the celebrated Sheffield imprint. Bochum Welt's drops on labels like Rephlex made for some of the most celebrated electronic music releases of the era and went on to influence producers the world over - including many of those who have turned up on CPU since it launched in 2012.

As such, it makes sense that two of the most crucial EPs from Bochum Welt's first wave are now being given new life by CPU. 'Desktop Robotics' and 'Feelings On A Screen' initially emerged in 1997 via Aphex Twin's Rephlex imprint. Now, Di Costanzo has curated this special CPU release to celebrate both of those EPs making it to 25. This is a reissue with a twist, though. While 'Desktop Robotics / Feelings On A Screen' features many crucial cuts from the original pressings, the record also serves up other gems gathered from Bochum Welt's original master tapes - all of which have never previously been released on vinyl.

The 'Desktop Robotics' cuts which make for the record's first half are dreamy, impressionistic things. On this quartet, Bochum Welt plays painterly synth work off of idiosyncratic drum programming to illuminating effect. The opening title-track, for instance, blooms from a clattering, distorted beat into an icily beguiling electronic soundscape, a vibe which carries through to following number 'HMT (202 Mix)'.

Things become more weightless on 'Leafs Brought By The Wind', a potent vignette where you can almost see the leaves falling amidst its reverb-drenched haze. We then get ethereal 'Marylebone (Demo Version)'. Anyone who's heard the iteration of 'Marylebone' which appeared on Bochum Welt's 2017 LP 'April' will be pleasantly surprised by this alternate mix. Here the track pulls away from pretty post-minimalist piano composition to widescreen ambience - it's so warm and intimate that it feels like peeking behind a curtain to observe an artist at work.

Things ramp up a notch with the tracks taken from in and around 'Feelings On A Screen'. The title cut kicks off the record's second half in limber fashion, its nimble percussion programming dancing around a pulsing bassline. Like A Tim's mix of 'Greenwich' is still as much of a party-starter as it was on the original 'Feelings On A Screen' release, with the Djax-Up-Beats veteran setting buoyant rhythm work against a playful, eccentric lead-line.

Between these tunes we are treated to one of the gems of the Bochum Welt discography. In 2007, Di Costanzo split an EP with Heinrich Mueller, an artist best known as Drexciya's Gerald Donald. That record featured Mueller's 'Z Version' of Bochum Welt's 'Saint', and the track's appearance here, with machine gun bass burbling alongside strange textures, joins the dots between Di Constanzo's style and the pulsating machine-funk that Donald helped popularise. Things close out with 'North', a frostily beautiful ambience which makes for a fitting bookend to this album when taken alongside 'Desktop Robotics'.

This 25th anniversary re-release of Bochum Welt's 'Desktop Robotics' and 'Feelings On A Screen' EPs reminds us that, while time may have passed, the appeal of Bochum Welt's electronic music remains as strong as ever.

Endless Illusion
30.12.2021

Exhausted Modern's debut full-length titled The Year of the Rat is a proof of the thought-provocation that author's name generates. Released on his own Endless Illusion imprint, the album doesn't have all the answers, it simply offers Exhausted Modern's perception of the modern times and also the energy to do something with them. The title, borrowed from the Chinese zodiac calendar, doesn't slip to mere esoteric prognosis, it fittingly and provocatively comments on broken mechanics of society, capitalistic hierarchisation and emotional frustration of its victims. Despite the dystopian character of Exhausted Modern's sound, which ranges from fast melancholia through suspicious calmness to slowly bubbling rage, it doesn't feel like the end of the world. It's critical artistic statement of a person who despite seeing all the darkness, also sees the way out of it.

'fork2-2' is a subdued excursion through ominous, trance-inducing strings and skeletal percussion. Opening the B side, '7 filakaramellur lion bar' spirals through warped vocals and acoustic contortions, followed by 'hatann satann', a high speed voyage through a demonic parallel universe. Ryuichi Sakamoto - Thousand Knives Of Ryuichi Sakamoto

Thousand Knives Of Ryuichi Sakamoto's Landmark First Solo Album From 1978 Issued On The Better Days Label And Featuring The Synth Classics "plastic Bamboo," "end Of Asia" & "thousand Knives" Is Reissued Outside Of Japan For The First Time In Decades.

Wewantsounds is proud to announce the release of Ryuichi Sakamoto's first solo album originally released in 1978 on the soughtafter Better Days label. Sakamoto was a member of Yellow Magic Orchestra at the time but the group hadn't released their first album yet. Featuring Sakamoto on a wide range of synthesizers and keyboards programmed by Hideki Matsutake, and accompanied by a few musicians including Haruomi Hosono and Pecker, "Thousand Knives" was a blueprint for the YMO sound and includes cult classics that were to become live favourites. Save for a small-scale release in 1982, this is the first time the album is being released on vinyl outside of Japan. Remastered from the original tapes by renowned producer and engineer Seigen Ono, the LP edition comes with original artwork including OBI and 4p insert with new introduction by Paul Bowler. 1978 was a key year for Japanese music. Haruomi Hosono, one of the country's most innovative musicians had just formed Yellow Magic Orchestra pursuing the sonic experimentation he had started with his solo album "Paraiso." The album, credited to "Harry Hosono and The Yellow Magic Band," had been recorded between December 77 and January 78 and featured both Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yukihiro Takahashi. Hosono quickly invited both musicians to form YMO but before the group could release their first album, Sakamoto entered the Nippon Columbia studios in April 1978 with a plan. Sakamoto had become an in-demand session musician after studying composition at the Tokyo University of Art and had played in many key albums of the time: Taeko Ohnuki's "Sunshower" and Tatsuro Yamashita "Spacy" to name just two famous albums. This led to an invitation by Hosono to feature on "Paraiso". A penchant for avant-garde and improvisation had gotten Sakamoto interested in Electronic Music early on and with “Thousand Knives”, he decided to get Hideki Matsutake on board as he had mastered the art of synth programming following a stint with Electronic Music pioneer Isao Tomita. “Thousand Knives” took several months to record as Sakamoto would be busy during the day with his session work and would only record at night. Named after Belgian-born poet Henri Michaux’s description of a mescaline experience, the album is a reflection on how synthesizer technology might come to change the face of music. The first side conceived as a long suite opens with the title track and a recitation of the Mao Zedong poem "Jinggang Mountain" filtered through a vocoder, before morphing into a mid-tempo synthpop instrumental. It is followed by "Island Of Woods", a ten minute track buzzing with insect-like synth sounds reminiscent of the tropical exotica of "Femme Fatale" on “Paraiso” (also featuring Sakamoto). Side one ends with "Grasshoppers," a beautiful acoustic piano melody underlined by a subtle synthesizer soundscape. Side two opens with "Das Neue Japanische Elektronische Volkslied," acknowledging the influence of the German sound spearheaded by Kraftwerk. The track features a mid-tempo metronomic beat skilfully intertwined with a Japanese folk sounding melody. The album ends with two catchy uptempo synthpop tunes in the form of "Plastic Bamboo" and "The End Of Asia," which both became staples of YMO’s and Sakamoto's live shows. Although "Thousand Knives" sold modestly upon release, it was hugely influential in setting the agenda for what was to follow. YMO's sound included various influences from its three members but there is no denying “Thousand Knives” paved the way for the group's Computer Music sound. Thousand Knives remains a fascinating insight into the making of a music revolution.

13.03.2019

The incomparable duo, Matmos, have done it again! Their new album, Plastic Anniversary, was created using only plastic. Highlighting the crises of convenience, the Duo make music from our refuse. True to form, the band have assembled a promiscuous array of examples of this sturdy-yet-ersatz family of materials: Dominos, Styrofoam coolers, police riot shields, polyethylene waste containers, PVC panpipes, pinpricks of bubble wrap, pills, silicone gel breast implants and most horrifically synthetic human fat. Where did this idea come from Drew Daniels and M.C, Schmidts own plastic' anniversary as a couple. Matmos glide from the tongue-in-cheek fun of Breaking Bread' (literally smashing Bread LPs) to Cronenbergian body-horror of Interior with Billiard Balls & Synthetic Fat.' Dj Ham (aka Hamilton) is a Kniteforce original artist, one of the ones who were there from the beginning and were part of the original success of the Kniteforce label as a whole. His classic work includes Most Uplifting and Let Yourself Go, the second of which gets a huge remix on this EP! But that’s the last track on the EP, because as good as it is, it is eclipsed by Dj Hams new work. Give It To Em contains all the elements you would expect – an old skool sound, sure, but innovation and trickery to stun and amaze while forcing the dancefloor to explode. Likewise, Noise Up grabs you by the ears and will not let go until its had its wicked way with you. A big EP from a big artist, not to be missed….

Splitradix - Philatelic Diethylamide

Dublin's Splitradix delivers an EP of intense and melancholic acid / braindance with plenty of ''light in darkness'' to quote Yellow Magic Orchestra. Opener Laplace Formal is a moody, hyper melodic piece for a dreamy dance floor. The oddly titled second track, The Dry Canal, is the centerpiece of the EP. Dry, deep and stomping acid taking you through a tunnel of sound - the two dark droney melody lines slowly but surely turn the piece into something truly epic and unforgettable... Opening the flipside, Empty Sea 1000 is a slow, lazy acid cut from another dimension, very nice! Lucan 303 Distribution Service is heavy on the kick. Basic at first, it later turns into a wonderfully melodic Rephlex-like cut. Last one, Laplace Formal (Navs' No Jacket Required Remix) is a laidback and more euphoric version of the EP's opening track.

A Mountain Of One - Custards Last Stand

A Mountain Of One are set to return to the musical landscape with their brand new track “Custard’s Last Stand”, released 30th July through new label AMORE via Above Board distribution. It is the first new piece of music the band have released in over a decade.

”Custard’s Last Stand” shows the band, made up of musical soulmates Mo Morris and Zeben Jameson, have lost nothing in the past decade. Recorded over Skype during the coronavirus pandemic, with Mo now in Bali and Zeben in west London, it is a shimmering, modern classic, experimental but accessible, melodic and adventurous. As ever, it is utterly unique, made in a musical universe all of their own.

“Custard’s Last Stand” EP is out 27th August, and will come with an incredible Denis Bovell Dub Remix, as well as another new track “Stars, Planets, Dust, Me”. The full EP package will come with a dub remix from musical pioneer Dennis Bovell.

The forthcoming album will be released this autumn. The whole project has been mastered then remixed for a forthcoming album by the legendary Ricardo Villalobos.

When they first started performing, they quickly became one of the most-acclaimed bands out there, with the likes of i-D, Sunday Times Culture, Pitchfork, NME and more raving about them and their inspired and original approach, led by Mo and Zeben’s almost telepathic understanding.

Sold-out shows and awesome reviews followed with “Collected Works” and “Institute of Joy”, two phenomenal records that have stood the test of time, criss-crossing folk, jazz, dance, rock and psychedelia.

A Mountain Of One have collaborated to create a coming together of music and virtual reality. With NYX VX, the band have developed a virtual world, one that will help provide inspired opportunities for artists looking to identify, connect and engage with audiences on multiple levels. This is the first stage of a new world that people will be building out and inhabiting, as venue for performances, home for musical and visual archives, space for play and exploration. Welcome to 'Stars, Planets, Dust, Me'.

Severed Heads - Since The Accident

Medical Records presents two of the most striking and iconic reissues in its catalog. Severed Heads are one of the most diverse and expert sound palette engineers and are also repeatedly overlooked and far underrated. Hailing from Sydney, Australia, they formed in 1979. The LP exemplifies the transition point between experimental structure and loops into the catchy pop hooks that would later define such releases as "Rotund For Success". Difficult to classify, it is a masterpiece of electronic music. The opening track "Relic Of The Empire" is a slow sequenced magnificent piece with time-stretched samples overlaid with multiple tracks to create a symphony quite unlike anything heard before. The hit "Dead Eyes Opened" (charted in 1985 as a single) is a dance floor friendly track with crafted synth hooks fused with bursts of noise intertwining with interesting vocal samples. "Gashing The Old Mae West" is a perfect example of how the record can take a dark turn into the style of the earlier Sev Heads with jagged industrial crunched out tape loops and folding in and out samples. Though signed to 80's industrial label icon Nettwerk in North America and often classified in the same vein, these records are not easily definable and actually have a life of their own. Though commonly misclassified with a lot of the late 80s industrial/goth scene (as well as touring with Skinny Puppy at one point), Severed Heads would be more accurately in good company with acts such as Cabaret Voltaire, early Coil, Chris & Cosey (and CTI), and the like. Long out of print and a rarity on the collector's market, it is presented with original repro jacket. Remastered by Tom Ellard form the original source masters. Presented on high-quality 180gram heavyweight black and white vinyl. Features bonus LP insert compiled by Tom Ellard with ephemera from the time. Limited Edition.

Severed Heads - City Slab Horror

Medical Records presents two of the most striking and iconic reissues in its catalog. The LP though 2 years after "Since The Accident" continues to carry the torch illustrating the evolving transition between experimental structure and loops into the catchy pop hooks that would later define such releases as "Rotund For Success". This LP seems to move slightly into darker territory in general with it's synth textures and slower tempo tracks but overall has a nice "continuation" feel from "Since The Accident" yet with obvious technological evolutions. The opening track "Spasm" drags the listener down the Sev Head mental rabbit hole instantly with it's heady samples and eloquent drum machine rhythm. "Spitoon Thud' is a rambunctious affair with it's cacophony of samples and percussion. "4.W.D." is a great sneak peak into the sound of the Sev Heads LPs to come with it's treated vocals and pop hooks (perfected on later records such as "The Big Bigot"). Next to last is the amazing "Goodbye Tonsils" track which is unstoppably catchy and features more of the creative use of samples which made this group so interesting. Presented on high-quality 180gram heavyweight bone white vinyl. Features bonus LP insert compiled by Tom Ellard with ephemera from the time. Limited Edition.

96 Back, aka Evan Majumdar-Swift, returns to CPU with his debut album 'Excitable, Girl'. Bringing his thoroughbred Sheffield electronic heritage back into the spotlight, this album raises the bar in terms of quality and diversity. DJs and discerning home listeners will find plenty of favourites on this long player with dance floor igniters jostling alongside ambitious ambient moments. Lush Plaid-like melodies throughout will keep you hooked.

Evan firmly established himself in 2018 and is one of the hardest working artists on the scene, this album will only strengthen his presence on the electro grid.

FORD PROCO - FRAGMENTOS DE OCIO EN EL HOCICO DEL CERDO

Ford Proco was formed in 1986 in Tijuana and is considered a pioneering act of advanced electronic music in Mexico. For more than three decades they have been developing a very particular vision of composition called “Autoconst”, derived from different styles (minimalism, industrial, noise, etc.) and tools (tapes, synths, samplers, computers).
Robert Proco (sampler & synthesizers) and Wito Lavolt (bass, keyboards & drums) have a long career together and with other projects and collectives. Their musical journey has gone through the fields of noise, minimal, cassette culture, avant-garde movements, sci-fi literature and tech-noise. With a strong aesthetic, this duo has moved through the limits of hardcore techno, industrial music, sonic experimentalism, always mutating and embracing new influx to their collage music combining such diverse and disparate influences as Cabaret Voltaire, Coil, Joy Division or Meat Beat Manifesto. Always interested in being a spearhead, they also incorporated elements of trip hop, ambient, noise, break-beat, film music, processing everything by samplers to get their unique sound. They have worked on several collaborations including a groovy participation with Peter Christopherson and John Balance (of the mythical Coil), Servando Carballar (Aviador Dro), Nacho Canut (Fangoria) and others.
In the early years Ford Proco released a couple of self-produced cassettes highly influenced by cut-up, noise and post-industrial repetition, receiving good reviews on the local media but also in Spain. In 1993 released their first album “Fragmentos De Ocio En El Hocico Del Cerdo…” (Opción Sónica), which brought together corrosive material from the first era with some approaches to new dance music. This album pushed them to play in several cities, to be included on various compilations and reviewed in numerous fanzines. A second album “Vertigo de Lodo y Miel” was published in 2000 (re-released by Infinite Fog Productions in 2015) followed by “Diagrama Percutor” (2009) and recently “Expansión Naranja” (Mannequin, 2015) including their collaboration with Coil.
“Fragmentos De Ocio En El Hocico Del Cerdo…” is now re-released on an expanded and deluxe limited edition of 350 copies with double vinyl and gatefold sleeve. All original tracks mixed and remastered from the original tapes together with some unreleased songs, alternative cuts and demos from the same sessions. There is also included a sticker and bonus CD with a selection of tracks from the first demo tapes.

He Felt The Friend Was Onto Something, Even If It Was Naïve, Or Just Optimistic, The Friend Was Describing The Unique Power Of This Extra-musical Device. In Emotional Music We Are Treated To Girardin's Tooling Of The Synthesizer As That Spiritual Instrument, One Where The Typical Motifs Of Musicality And Style Degrade In Favor Of Poetic Modulation Matrices And Breath Controlled Hopefuls. Girardin Explores Ideas Of Solitude In The Practice Of Computer Music Production, Giving Way To A Collection Of Short Dynamic Pieces Created Solely With Digital Instruments And Tools. Unlike Other Instruments, Synthesizers Occupy A Special Place In Sonic Energy, Dependent On Electricity, Amplification And Speakers For Physical Sound Creation. Ratkiller - Meltdown Of The Highest Order

Mihkel Kleis - man behind the Ratkiller moniker - listens music on the verge of human capacity. And from what he hears, he compiles TOP 500 end of year lists to his friends.
.
While not listening, he is probably making music. His ventures on underground music date back to late 1990s. He started in space-age jazz-rock and prog band formed in art university in Tallinn, Estonia, but has mostly recorded on his own under different aliases - cultivating from black metal to library music. If you look close enough you can get massive box-set of all his recordings with prints by the man himself.

With Ratkiller, Mihkel Kleis started sometime around 2011, trying to catch his idiosyncratic impression of everything that can be called "contemporary electronic club music". Although, as he has said: I still don't know how it actually should be done. In a way I am like a parrot - I like to imitate but I don't have any clue what I'm saying.'

After several tape-releases on labels Rotifer Cassettes, Baba Vanga, ,paranoia and Crash Symbols "Meltdown of the Highest Order" is his first material on vinyl.

PS Mihkel also likes to draw and design his album covers.

Various - Machine Funk Is Our Game Volume 5

The Kraftjerkz compilation series Machine Funk is our Game is back with another installment. Volume 5 features some long-time players like Alonzo and DJ Di’jital, while also introducing some new names to the Kraftjerkz roster as well. Alonzo starts the comp strong with a hyper catchy, growling cut that derives its fuel from a low, moody synth line that expands like a monster coming out of the murky abyss. High-pitched, zany synth rhythm keeps everything in balance, though, and the looping melody on this track is so solid that you can endlessly ride it. Konerytmi’s track, “Replikantti” is an electro cut whose tight, truncated percussive elements and warp-speed synth arpeggiation creates both the melody and the rhythm, keeping us hooked from start to finish. The EP turns a bit with the next track, “TicTac” by Zarcon, that begins with a UFO-infused vocal, before squelchy acid melody and speedy, twinkling synth takes over. DJ Di’jital’s track, like all of the tracks he releases on Kraftjerkz, is a quality standout, and its name says it all. “Jit it Up” delivers a hefty dose of Detroit-style jit / footwork, with its driving electro beat and laser-quick synth that seems to touch 150 BPM territory. What follows is the vocoder-laced cut from Cybereign, “Breathing Apparatus,” remixed by Mr. Kraftjerkz himself, Kid Ginseng. Finally, just when we think we’ve maxxed out our senses, the EP ends on the super weird, super original track, “Shaftwerk” from Bart Karlos. It’s a no-holds-barred banger meant to work the body. Bottom line: there’s really no filler on Machine Funk is Our Game, Vol 5. It might even be the best installment of the compilation series yet. In terms of quality, this is electro at its finest, and any of these six tracks would enhance any late-night set.

Oneohtrix Point Never - Returnal

Returnal sees Daniel Lopatin fine tune his craft for creation of deep atmospheres and texture even further.
"Returnal" is the fourth album from Daniel Lopatin's Oneohtrix Point Never project, after "Betrayed In The Octagon" (Deception Island, 2007), "Zones Without People" (Arbor, 2009) and "Russian Mind" (No Fun, 2009). All 3 albums being superbly compiled on the "Rifts" double CD (No Fun, 2009). It sees Lopatin fine tune his craft for creation of deep atmospheres and texture even further. Starting off with the mind blowing triptych of "Nil Admiari / Describing Bodies / Stress Waves", which fires off into a noise / rhythm excess before entering a zone of relative calm building to the melancholy of the final part. This sets the tone perfectly for the albums title track, a stunning out of this world ballad featuring Lopatin's near desperate vocal delivery, ending what could be seen as one of his most chilling and thought provoking sides to date. The atmosphere is slightly lifted as the darkened sun comes up over the ruins on "Pelham Island Road" and "Where Does Time Go", with the album closing with edgy broken beats and fourth world possible landscapes of "Preyouandi", which fades into the distance with echoes of the "Returnal" chorus, closing the loop. What's burnt into memory here is Lopatin's love affair with the long, slow path back home... the cycle... the hypnotic sector... the ghost in the machine... and whether people are making dance music or hip hop or space head music or metal, the ouroboros is present in every sector - as it was in Bach's study, and in the elephant songs of the Ituri forests. Available on CD in digipack and LP in gatefold cover.
