Meemo Comma - Sleepmoss

“Sleepmoss is a romantic eulogy to autumn and winter. A time for peaceful inner reflection, amidst the backdrop of British woodlands, dramatic skies and turbulent storms. Finding peace with mental health and being mindful of the beauty in death and endings.”

'Sleepmoss', the second album from Meemo Comma a.k.a. Brighton-based producer Lara Rix-Martin, is an adventurous, unusual and very contemporary sonic take on the impact of landscape. It’s a kind of storytelling, inspired by the shifting landscapes of her daily walks with her dog on the South Downs. Discussing her under-the-radar debut album 'Ghost on the Stairs' with Aimee Cliff at The Fader in 2017, she noted how she is “drawn to eerie sounds in my work.” This fascination remains on 'Sleepmoss' but the context has changed from the interior and inwards gaze to a much wider, wilder viewpoint. Lara describes her new record as being “about getting lost in the sumptuous divinity of the dark months in Britain. It is in many ways the opposite reflection of 'Ghost on the Stairs' which was about internal processing of sounds, specifically human speech. The last album was almost an exorcism of issues troubling me but this album is about the glory of solitude and the richness of romance that can be found in nature.”

‘Sleepmoss’ challenges us to rethink our perceptions of the “pastoral” and to look at nature afresh with new eyes. For not only are the landscapes around us an escape: much more lies there, it's this turbulence we need to find peace with, and Sleepmoss grapples with the physicality of the landscape in a fresh and intuitive way. Rix-Martin notes “Musically, we have never truly embraced rugged landscapes in their full glory and I felt this when I thought about the many different composers over the centuries, their work seemed uptight and far too human in scale. For instance Vaughan Williams had unquestionably beautiful moments in The Lark Ascending, but it's too clean, too controlled. I wanted to channel a take on classical music that was hyper-real, focusing on letting the elements speak to us, not the other way around.”

A visual influence is J.M.W. Turner - “his work with changing light and storms that are raw and expressive.” and the abstract way in which Turner boldly revealed both horror and beauty (some would say “reality”) is reflected in the sonic approach throughout Sleepmoss. The album’s timeline starts out with summer's end, and the feeling of the air changing. Within this timeline, Rix-Martin describes the drama of her songs as visual stories. “The sounds around us are totally different depending on the season, I always assumed it was to do with the change in water vapour and heat in the air. Summer is much too high pitched and spiky.” To pull out a couple of our favourites, the songs 'Night Rain' and 'Murmur' are “the story of predator and prey, death and life, one fortifying the other while a storm rumbles. The next morning the woods are clear birds sing in the breeze from the night’s storm.”

‘Sleepmoss’ captures not only a unique perspective on nature but like nature itself, reflects the shifting times we live in. As Rix-Martin points out, Nature is often seen as “something to be controlled, neatened, conquered.” Sleepmoss interprets and admires nature in all its glory.

Melodien - Enantiodromia

The second of two ace new Polytechnic Youth LPs for late June; this one sees Liverpool based, Harry Sumnall’s Melodien debut on PY after releases on sister label Deep Distance amongst others. Eight kosmische flavoured synth pop nuggets, heavy on nods to the Sky label oeuvre of later Cluster, Wolfgang Reichmann, Harald Grosskopf, Deutsche Wertarbeit and co; yet with a freshness and boldness very much of today.

Each track is underpinned in the most part by driving, sequenced motorik rhythms hugely recommended to all fans of the above…

The LPs’ title “Enanriodromia” is the constancy of change and the emergence of the unconscious diametric in the course of time - everything that exists turns into its opposite (Carl Jung); and Harry himself describes the album as an idyllic backdrop to an imagined world where “Iasos’ Crystal Vista is repeated on loop across all TV channels, where Luboš Fišer composes Olympic gold medal anthems, where Marcel Schwob and Jane de La Vaudère works are free from your local book exchange, where Josef Svoboda designed your local shopping center, where Richard Pinhas plays at your village fete, and the most popular YouTube channels give advice on sequencer ratcheting and psychopharmacology!”

Melting Bridge 融化橋 - 我們從明天來 (We Come From Tomorrow)

Melting Bridge 融化橋 is John Tucker and Pia Hsieh. With one half hailing from California, and the other, Taipei, this peculiar meeting of minds led to the forging of an incredible musical bond. A fresh and intricate exploration of the tension between tradition and modernity has amounted to an incredible 9-track full-length debut "我們從明天來" (We Come From Tomorrow), out on Evening Chants.

Melting Bridge 融化橋 have formed a unique set of sounds that is exuberant throughout the album - stemmed from their intensive experimentation with the countless possibilities of intertwining beautiful acoustic Eastern instruments such as the Guzheng, Suona, Dizi, with more modern digital tools such Environmental Sounds, Drum Machines, Prepared Electric Guitar and Synthesizers.

MIEKO SHIMIZU - PHENOMENA OF THE MIND EP

Mieko Shimizu is a London based Japanese singer, songwriter, composer and producer. Mieko first erupted onto the UK electronic scene as Apache 61; her searing alter ego, fusing layers of cross-woven breaks and battling shards of sub-bass within stateless melodies drawn from the fringes of the avant-garde. Garnering plays by John Peel she quickly build herself a name across the underground scene. Originally trained in Jazz, she cites the multidisciplinary performance artist Meredith Monk and composer Terry Riley as early influences, but also draws inspiration from many genres.

Phenomena of the mind is a re-mastered EP of selected tracks from the album of the same title released in 2006, the year after the London Terror attacks. Something dispirited and unexplainable lay heavy in the air of this immense city that we lived and breathed. In the title song “ Phenomena of the mind” Mieko’s intense Japanese rap echoed the din of the chaotic streets we walk.‘Visualise’, she says, try to imagine a way to fight our way our way out of this ominous struggle.
In the track “Signal Found”, the theme continues to shattered Dance Hall beats that reverberate to the “Twisted Sound” of “Broken down” “London Town”. “Have you lost a plot? Are you ok?” she asks?

In the track ‘Black Salt” a dark melancholic theme floats over fragmented, glitchy beats compounded by the repetition of the word “black” which hammers the constant bombardment of racism prescient of the call for freedom that “Black Lives Matter.”

Wonderland Magazine has described Mieko’s music as “beautiful poetic verses and stunning musical arrangements and Mark Taylor describes Mieko in Record Collector as “An avant-garden artist pushing boundaries”

• Re-mastered EP of selected tracks from the album of the same title released in 2006

• Premiering the re-release at Twenty One in Southend on 21st April

• Mark Taylor describes Mieko in Record Collector as “An avant-garden artist pushing boundaries”

Mighty Truth - Mighty Truth

PRESSING OF 200 COPIES ON CLEAR VINYL.

RIYL Zero 7/ Plaid / Hot Chip / Weather Report / Isolee / Baby Fox

Old friends Julian Bates and Alex Gray —working together as Mighty Truth for the first time since 1995’s From The City To The Sea — filled a car with old analogue synths, kids’ noise toys, and collected field recordings took a road trip down to hole up in an old water mill in southwest England’s bird-twittery, bee-loud Quantock hills.

Things got cinematic: unequal measures of early Weather Report, Wim Wenders, and Serge Gainsbourg kept them wonderfully lost in their imagined world. Back in London with guest singers Allonymous (Paris via Chicago) and Wayne Paul (London), they completed the album and decided to just call it Mighty Truth. With an aim to present the live show at moonlight pop-up cinema venues, Mighty Truth are here for the next chapter in their epic saga.

Back then….

Old friends Julian Bates and Alex Gray first met through their shared obsession with classic cars (both owned old SAAB 96s). At the time, Julian’s band Nightrains was signed to ACE Records in the UK whilst Alex worked first as a session keyboardist for the likes of Edwyn Collins, Billy Mackenzie, and Busta “Cherry” Jones, and later as a mixer and remixer working with S’express producer Pascal Gabriel, Malcolm McLaren, and soul DJ legend Dr Bob Jones.

Working together in the studio for the first time producing Vanessa Freeman (4 hero), Alex and Julian decided to embark on a drop-tempo jazz trip project they named Mighty Truth. Dr Bob heard that first self-released vocal track “Rebirth” and started dropping it on Kiss FM (UK). After guest DJ slots on Coldcut’s Kiss show, Alex and Julian signed to Tongue and Groove records.

The album From the City to the Sea produced a number of singles and both “Rebirth” and “Is it a Wizard or a Blizzard” were licensed to many compilations both in the UK and internationally (eg. Dope on Plastic, Mole Listening Pearls, Eight Ball).

MIKE COOPER - Spirit Songs

Originally released in 2005 on Cooper's Hipshot Cd-r label, and reissued here for the first time on vinyl, Spirit Songs deserves to be regarded as a true rediscovered gem, remixed and remastered by Mike Copper himself!

Spirit Songs comes as a highly organic form of Ambient-Folk-Blues with Cooper reordering material to create an immersive listening experience. A stream of cut-up lyrics inspired by Thomas Pynchon's writing slide across multiple electronic layers and masterfully fingerpicked acoustic guitars combining into a moving tide. This is deeply inspired music from a unique artist: Mike Cooper the so called "icon of post-everything music” a true sound explorer constantly pushing the boundaries of genres and styles, Folk, Blues, Free Improv, Exotica, Ambient, Electronica...

"Spirit Songs.. a glorious marriage of all three of Cooper's previous musical strategies; creating a stunning hybrid. The album contains 10 songs performed on finger-picked acoustic and electric lap steel guitar,
often looped and treated in real time, with Cooper singing lyrics in a quietly meandering, semi-improvisatory manner that recalls a more polished Jandek. The style of songwriting is immediately recognizable as blues, but an intuitive, idiosyncratic form of folk-blues, with Cooper narrating laments over matters personal and global, gentle universalisms that double as political messages. All of this occurs over a loose rhythmic framework provided by various noisy loops, with cracks, scratches and pops, echoes and distortions skipping out from every refrain. It's a gentle cacophony with subtle undercurrents of beauty and sadness, effortlessly nostalgic but still very rooted in the now. I think that Mike Cooper can genuinely call this style his own; I've never heard anything remotely like it, and it works beautifully, highlighting both song and singer, as well as the happy accidents resulting from the intersection of structure and chaos."- Pitchfork Review.

Ministry - In Case You Didn't Feel Like Showing Up

American industrial metal band Ministry was founded by lead singer Al Jourgensen in 1981. Originally a new wave synthpop outfit, Ministry changed its style to become one of the pioneers of industrial metal in the mid-‘80s. In Case You Didn’t Feel Like Showing Up is a live album by the band. The record was originally released in 1990 and contains the live show performed in Merrillville on February 22, 1990. It is six songs long, but delivers big time for each of them. The energy, the maniacal chaos and an order under the surface of this chaos. In 2005 In Case You Didn’t Feel Like Showing Up was ranked number 328 in Rock Hard magazine’s book “The 500 Greatest Rock & Metal Albums of All Time”.

In Case You Didn’t Feel Like Showing Up is available as a limited edition of 1000 numbered copies on silver vinyl. The package includes an insert.

Mirt - Greed

Monotype Rec.
12.07.2019

After being busy in 2018 with 3 field recording projects, a soundtrack to a popular HBO series "Blinded by the Lights" and "Decaying Land", a companion album for "Vanishing Land" recorded in 2013, Mirt returns with his next release "Greed", a much darker release from his few previous albums, fusing rhythmic frameworks with modular melodies. Still playing with various textures ranging from shimmering nature sounds recorded at dawn to atonal patterns on hi-end synthesizer systems.

It starts with field recording and shattered artificial sounds and becomes denser and with majestic drones and a slowly growing pulse. The second part of the record becomes even more motoric and sometimes much more upbeat than his previous productions. Still, the album retains a cinematic and oneiric character of his previous works. Everything ends with slowly evolving minimal trance that seems to leave us without any conclusion - intriguing yet disturbing at the same time. The music is rather abstract, balancing between the calm and the coldness. Its detachment from the title seems to intensify its meaning. This LP seems to be a much more accessible entity without losing its experimental edge.

Nivhek - After Its Own Death / Walking In A Spiral Towards The House

Release: 31.05.2019

Opaque assemblages of Mellotron, guitar, field recordings, tapes and broken FX pedals by Pacific Northwest musician Liz Harris, created during and after two contrasting residencies in the Azores, Portugal and Murmansk, Russia and combined with pieces made at home in Astoria, Oregon. The collection's unique dual design functions as a forked path, existing independently of one another but with roots intertwined. She cites her score for HYPNOSIS DISPLAY as a compositional reference point, inspired by "interior mnemonic device landscapes" and "curiosity around a sadness."

In pacing, palette and poignancy, these sides rank among Harris' most stark, primordial work: fragile, feverish, ominous and otherworldly. She describes this music as "a requiem, a ritual, to unlock and release feelings," a sense of shadowy masses, moving backwards, in spirals, massive doorways opening chaotic forces, "a toxic concentrated reduction of something much darker bubbling beneath." Her artistry for mapping richly detailed inner worlds is nowhere more expressive and enigmatic, vibrations and voices gliding dimly out of the void, "wraithlike and ethereal, their existence in the mist questionable."

Initially released in a private edition that vanished almost as quickly as it was announced, After its own death / Walking in a spiral towards the house is presented here in a beautiful second edition on Superior Viaduct's imprint W.25TH.

“Unnecessary" is the title of the second release on A Flooded Need. Previously tangled in the most slippery meanders of electronic music with strong punk and wave reminiscences, 1/2 of Hyperlacrimae alongside 11xxx27, Nocturnerror approaches this work in a totally different way. The six tracks of the EP, in fact, represent a melting pot of hybrid influences between audacious bass music, cinematic and cacophonic IDM, totally deconstructed techno - stripped of its dance component - and dirty rave jungle.”

Oliver Patrice Weder - The Pool Project

Recorded in a pool house surrounded by an evergreen oak tree forest just outside of Madrid; musician and composer Oliver Patrice Weder’s second artist album ‘The Pool Project’ combines textural and meditative sounds that touch on global influences from jazz, ambient and modern composition. In conjunction with the album, Spitfire Audio has released ‘The Pool Project’ sound library, inviting composers and producers to reimagine, recreate or completely pull apart Oliver’s sound world to facilitate their own vision. Capturing the unique acoustics of the pool house, the library is presented in Spitfire Audio's award-winning, easy-to-use plug-in and features a range of controls and effects. While ‘OPW’ was inspired by constant movement and travelling, ‘The Pool Project’ had quite a contrary motivation. Oliver explains “After making my debut album, it was clear for me that it was only the beginning of a long journey. I enjoy the process and idea of creating something deeply personal and connected to the situation I am in, a snapshot of time so to speak, so I had to start writing a second album sooner or later. I love change and find it very inspiring to creatively adapt to my surroundings and circumstances to see what comes out at the other end. I spent the lockdown time living in a countryside cottage just outside of Madrid, surrounded by holly oak trees. The combination of this and seeing my one year old daughter grow up, as well as expecting another baby boy, created a very unique and fruitful environment to draw inspiration from.” Confirmed press/radio: Future Music - Album review Electronic Sound - Album review Scala Radio -Ambient Track of the Week Scala Radio - Session Track/Interview Reviews: "Rich in beauty and emotion… one of the finest modern composers around" - 8/10, Future Music Mag "Sounds like a warm oasis of calm" - 8.5/10, Higher Plain Music Achievements: Recorded and toured across Europe with various bands including psychedelic rock band Time for T. Ondness - Not Really Now Not Any More

Holuzam's third release features a fearless long-time sound activist: Ondness is one of many aliases of Bruno Silva. You may know him from Sabre (with Carlos Nascimento) or solo as Serpente; under the Ondness alias he’s been putting out music on Where To Now?, Seagrave or Sucata Tapes (a sister label from Discrepant). “Not Really Now Not Any More” is a beautiful resilient piece, mastering the fine line between album and mixtape.

Both the title and the contents of “Not Really Now Not Any More” have been inspired by the idea that we are constantly floating around unfinished ideas. The title is taken from a graffiti that inspired Alan Garner to write “Red Shift” (Mark Fisher wrote about it in his book/essay “The Weird And the Eerie”). The typo and the idea around “not really now not any more” serves this album perfectly well.

During its ten tracks, Ondness is constantly going back and forth on the way he explores soundscapes and how they can pair up with their own resolution. Nothing in “Not Really Now Not Any More” is really finished but also it isn’t unfinished. It’s a subtle idealization of the importance of accepting how things are. “Torre” starts and ends the album as two different songs sharing the similarities – not only the title – that encapsulate the whole essence of “Not Really Now Not Any More”.

“Esquina, Espera” points out this whole idea of never-ending construction, it’s dub-ska-industrial- techno perfectly crafted to make the listener feel the freakish anxiety that we have to be everywhere right now. It’s pop-up music, constantly moving and fading away, reappearing with a new idea and then leaving it out in the open. It tells the listener about how it lacks ideas because it contains too many ideas.

Those ‘too many ideas’ make this a perfectly fit record for 2019. Music that is everywhere and nowhere. But it's not loud or trying to show off. It lets the listener peel its skin and find the magnificent sci-fi extravaganza that “Not Really Now Not Any More” inspires. Going nowhere being somewhere. Do you feel me?

ORFEÓN GAGARIN - ORFEÓN GAGARIN

You have in your hands the third release of Miguel A. Ruiz alias Orfeón Gagarin for Verlag System. This is the reissue, for the first time published on vinyl and digital disc, of his first album of homonymous title published in 1986. A record considered as a reference of electronic music underground Spanish, first release of record label Toracic Tapes , also reference of the independent Spanish record labels.

“The elaboration of the timbres and the envelopes, the treatment of the voices, the construction of the sequences ... all assembled with mastery in a timeless work. In short, its edition on vinyl is more than wise and deserved.”

Teo Martínez · Cloruro Sónico

“This Orfeón Gagarin’s debut of 1986 sounds to the XXI Century and collects the savoir-faire of Miguel. The signal of the DIY punk spirit is evident.

It is a clear designation of origin for that underground electronic eighties cassette from outdated Madrid; the one who had no place in the exquisite “movida madrileña” (madrilean new wave). It is evident that "In vitro process" could never access that Olympus of the gods. It is perceived in courts as "Last Instance" to that young man who is around the twenties, who hears crackling needles of the turntable in the groove of the German LPs of Sky, as it would happen to the founder of Mute Records or the ambient series of Eno in "Eucarystics”.

It is that crude, hard cover, full of thick points, that portrays the viewer's gaze beyond the shape of the dish. This image captures the essence and mystery of this album.

Do not be deceived, that look goes beyond the O.V.N.I. and from human finitude observes with stupor the immeasurableness of the cosmos, its infinite, its power.”

Antoni Aura · Tagomago Fest/Verlag System

“Toracic belonged to a second wave, along with other labels such as IEP or Proceso Uvegraf, among many others that appeared throughout the Iberian Peninsula (Spain-Portugal). The first cassette of O.G. it was undoubtedly the most original that I had heard inside that alternative and underground world: synthesizers with welltreated electronic home recordings and effects, in a unique mix of experimental, industrial music, ethnic sounds, glimpses of electronic pop, ambient..., very inside the home spirit and the "do it yourself" of that time.”

Orson Hentschel - Antigravity

Orson Hentschel is a German composer and visual artist based in Berlin. He composes experimental electronic music, with influences ranging from classical minimalism to triphop and drone.

For his third studio album Orson Hentschel travels back to the past and into the future, combining both old and new sounds, merging analogue drum machines from the 60’s with modern synthesizer environments. Hentschel largely forgoes melodies in order to create space for drone alike and sustained tones within the lower bass frequencies as well as noisy electronics. Sometimes a beat is coming straight out of the box, like in „Steady State“ or „Ghost Echos“. Constant rhythms alternate with fragmented, overlapped or reversed ones, like on „Antigravity“ or „Walki Talki“. For the rhythmical sound editing, Hentschel used the Watkins Copicat, an old tape echo, which was very popular back in the days and which amplifies the scratchy sounding characteristic of his rhythm machines. His overall vision is to create a futuristic vintage sound, which does not fit in any ordinary mould.

Since his latest album „Electric Stutter“ (2017), Hentschel’s musical exploration lasted almost two years and is closely linked with his real-world journey, moving from Düsseldorf to Berlin. After a musical lean period in Düsseldorf it was time to get new inspiration and to create a new working environment. Berlin turned out to be this new place to absorb positive energy and to regain a creative workflow. „Antigravity“ is the symbol for this creation period. It reflects his temporarily disconnected relation to music and his (old) environment.

Ose (UK artist Ewan Fisher) creates work focused around simple but beautiful melodic minimalism, deep noise texture, slow builds and fades, warm bass drone, and dramatic soundscapes, and he utilises these elements to great emotional and visceral effect.

His debut album ‘Ellipsis’ finds him at his most emotionally charged and sonically intense. The record was made expressively and intuitively at a time in the artist’s life that was defined by loss, and much of the troubled magic and heightened, often conflicting emotion of this era can be heard in the windswept sounds, crackling melodies, deep textures, and epic, swelling arrangements. The sound is characterised by a sense of things flowing away, or exploding out of existence, with surging waves of nostalgia, melancholy, and euphoria. Each track takes you on a journey from which you come back changed. In advance of the release the album was picked up by exciting new Berlin based ambient listening series, ‘Music for airports’, and was included as a preview at their M4A 33.3 event earlier in 2019. Ose’s previous release, the techno infused ‘Siberian Mirror EP’ (2017), received praise from Resident Advisor who described it as “..a total banger that gradually heats up and crescendos with splashes of acid”, and other of Fisher’s work has been played out at Bloc Festival, on BBC Radio and NTS Radio, and at many underground parties in London and across Europe. In 2018 Ose’s remix of the track ‘Emphasis’ appeared on the ‘Reloaded’ album of synth pioneer Harald Grosskopf, and he featured on the first Sine Language Records release in 2018, with his remix of ‘Diode’, by Awe Kid.

Other Joe - Blessings From Th Eheart

Other Joe is the pseudonym of producer, mastering engineer, and label-head Joe Buchan, an individual with a penchant for free-wheeling experimentation and genre-crossing musical tastes. Drawing upon a wide array of sounds that pay homage to his love of both the beautiful and the abrasive, Joe devours indiscriminately whatever sounds might cross his path, the result giving birth to the unique musical journey that is listening to an Other Joe record. After a few years spent playing in bands and releasing small bodies of work under different monikers, Joe released what many listeners know as his breakout record, Alien Haze, a beautiful collection of recordings that oscillate from collages of field recording and found sound, sublime balearic-era saxophone symphonies, and introspective neo-classical psychedelia. His latest work, blessing from th eheart (typo intentional), expands on Other Joe’s love for blending field recording and acoustic instruments with electronic processing. Beginning by reviewing the catalogue of creative notes he had archived since the release of Alien Haze in March 2019, Joe picked apart voice memos, Logic projects, iPhone videos and whatever else he could lay hands on. Says Joe, “looking over it all at once, the musical ideas I had been attracted to over the past eight or nine months started to make a bit more sense - I could see that there were instruments I was liking, or chord progressions that I kept coming back to, structures and forms that I had found engrossing. Sort of like putting together a jigsaw puzzle that I had made without realising.”

Paco Sala - Our Love Is The Gold

"Our Love Is The Gold" is the third proper studio album from Paco Sala following "Ro-Me-Ro" & "Put Your Hands On Me". Written over 4 years it marks a return to song-writing for the duo, employing fever-dream melodies and synth drunk hooks, balanced against off-kilter production that sets them apart from their peers.

Intense, impassioned, guttural yet enigmatic - the album documents the process of leaving London and the empowerment a new life inspires. The opening & title track is a statement of intent “are you aware of my power?” repeats Garza, leaving us in no doubt that we really shouldn’t doubt her.

Tone set, what follows is gloriously idiosyncratic and deeply personal pop, presented without compromise or concession. Direct, confident, articulate - gone are the the opiated improvisations of 2017’s "The Silent Season", though the wilful sense of adventure remains throughout. "Our Love is The Gold" is a record of awakenings and self-discovery. Praise about Paco Sala:

"fragmented, distorted pop music, and its melted concoction of influences – from 80s no-wave to contemporary R&B – is transformed into an inebriated haze of synthesizer and vocals" - FACT

Palmistry is the project of London-based vocalist, songwriter and producer Benjy Keating, known for his stripped back pop and forward thinking production. His second album Afterlife was written in a heatsick haze in Athens, Greece and the Mixpak Studios in Brooklyn, NY, and further pushes his knack for intimate and heartfelt earworms that grapple with disconnection, devotion and the emotions in between. While his debut album PAGAN was a self-contained effort, with Afterlife Palmistry cracks the door open to some accomplished friends who bring their own colors & textures to his singular world. There’s woozy anthem “Water” produced by SOPHIE, “Tru Luv” - a duet with Miamibased vocalist Toian produced by Benny Blanco, as well as assistance from Ghanaian artist Klu, Cashmere Cat and Mechatok. Afterlife is pop at the edges, with poetry at the core, evoking bodily sensations, lucid dream states and fractured memories - the slice of an orange, the patter of rain on a car roof and the crushing weight of city life.

Pamela Z - Echolocation

Echolocation

05.11.2021

Echolocation is the debut album by Pamela Z, the pioneering Bay Area intermedia composer and performance artist. Written and recorded over three years, and self-released and distributed on cassette in 1988, Echolocation is genre-defying document of Z’s earliest experiments with live voice and delay, and the impetus of an artist’s three decade search for sounds yet unfelt.

Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, Z traded one snowy backdrop for another to attend the University of Colorado in Boulder at the tail end of the 70s, where she pursued a degree in music while taking local gigs covering Joni Mitchell and Malvina Reynolds b-sides on an acoustic guitar. While a host at KGNU, Z discovered a vast world of avant-garde music in the community radio station’s library, and was inspired to create towards, and alongside, the fringe sounds she pulled from the stacks and broadcast. This revelation intersected with a new era of accessible and affordable instruments and home recording technology, and a diversifying community of artists self-releasing music on cassette and finding an audience through underground publications.

Z moved again to San Francisco in 1984, legally changed her last name, and furthered her practice of vocal processing in live environments. A city simultaneously nurturing and stratifying the free spirit of the two decades prior, Z assumed an immediate role in the Bay Area’s interdisciplinary performance art scene, and began curating Z Programs, her own concert and event series.

Parekh & Singh - Science City

Science City is the second LP from Kolkata dream pop duo Parekh & Singh. If their debut Ocean conjured a lush landscape populated by magical creatures, Science
City sees our sharp-suited star-gazers materialising in another dimension - a retro sounding futurescape of doctors and scientists, quantum mechanics and plans to
unlock the secrets of the “Universosphere”. Parekh’s sublime vocals once again backed by vintage synths and Singh’s joyously experimental percussion.
Opener Sunbeam depicts an ‘AI being’ blinking in the sun whilst contemplating its own obsolescence. Down at the Sky is an Escher-like search for truth and Hello is
described curiously as “creamy music for advanced night time driving on deserted streets”. The squelchy synths and xylophone runs of Be Something channel a
rainy day Steely Dan. While Evening Sun soars over circuit board landscapes, with 8-bit laser gun FX pulsing through, Monkey depicts a video game set in a
luminous forest biosphere. Following Surgeon’s dissection of the dark heart of the infosphere, the Prog Pop splendour of 100 Shadows journeys below “our troubled
surface world” to a secret kingdom of synthesisers. Summer Skin opens a hazy portal to the bucolic, where we find our singer alone with an acoustic, pondering the
“momentariliness of life”. For all the talk of “particle physics” and “aerodynamics”, it’s love that sustains life in the dreamy Fwd Slash. Soul-pop gem Crystalline brings
this album to a fittingly sublime conclusion.
With Science City, Parekh & Singh commit 11 heavenly tracks of the freshest, dreamiest pop to the Cosmos. The soundtrack to a new dream of India.
Today, India is dreaming new dreams and this is the soundtrack.

Parish - Cascades Of Refinement

Parish

Cascades Of Refinement

CassetteIMPREC508CS
Important Records
19.05.2023

Ten years ago, Parish Bracha anonymously released his Disconscious album Hologram Plaza, significantly influencing the still nascent Vaporwave scene. He continued producing a number of disparate anonymous projects until Cascade II was released in 2020 on Arca's Mutant Mixtape.

Cascades of Refinement, which includes the single Cascade II, is Parish's debut album released under his own name and his focus on the dialogue between the digital and the organic continues. The techniques that defined his influential early sound have been refined into a flawless hybrid of analog and digital textures which give his post-minimalist compositions an unmistakably personal expressivity.

Classical instruments are mutilated and transmuted into razor-sharp shards of glass suspended on piano wire above warped opalescent metal while never losing sight of their tonal integrity. Much like the impartial juxtaposition Parish employs in his timbral exploration, each composition explores the concepts of beauty and gentleness through and with extremity, violence, and chaos as equal counterparts, with each successive piece refining and relieving the artificial tension between these states. Employing use of the Una Corda, prepared piano, bowed piano, plucked piano, harpsichord, church organ, untuned violin, voice, synthesizers, and resampled field recordings, Cascades of Refinement lies somewhere in the indefinite space between acoustic and electronic and is beholden to neither.

Parish's initial electroacoustic experiments with piano and strings were interrupted by the pandemic lockdown when he was limited to sampled instrumentation and digital processing available on a computer. Out of this necessity evolved an appreciation for the incidental nature of digitally sampled acoustic instrumentation and the unpredictability of its interaction with digital signal processing.

As work on Cascades of Refinement continued and acoustic recording was reintroduced, the focus turned to the tension between recorded and sampled instrumentation, with the goal of integrating the two into a singular indistinguishable material to be warped and shaped together. Each of the four pieces of the Cascade series explore this tension, successively integrating and collapsing their distinction with each piece.

The subtle artifacts of digital processing and incidental mechanical sounds of the acoustic are amplified and given presence alongside the tonal elements of each piece until a point of indivisibility is reached. The sound of a bow scraping along a string or a granular buffer freezing are neither discarded nor hidden, but selected as the ripest material to accompany and structure each composition. Cascades of Refinement is a dialogue between organic and digital, between the mercurial and infinitely reproducible, not as opposites, but as mereologically cohabiting counterparts with equal expressivity.

"The beauty of Jiha's work lies in the spaces she leaves" - The Guardian
The highly acclaimed Korean multi-instrumentalist and composer Park
Jiha, returns with a luminous third album
A deep meditation on the intersection of music and light, The Gleam further
extends Jiha's reputation for uncompromising sonic explorations. Pop Matters
called her musical art "a near flawless fusion of folk tradition and new
composition."
How often do we consider light? We revel in the soft wonder of a sunrise or the
majesty of a glorious sunset, but all through the day its quality and texture is
continually changing, second by second, in ways we rarely register. That beauty is
the inspiration for The Gleam.
"The Gleam continues Park Jiha's solo expedition into experimental Korean
neoclassical braindance. Once again, she plays all the instruments herself – piri
(an oboe), saenghwang (a multi-pipe mouth organ), yanggeum (a dulcimer) and
glockenspiel – overdubbing multiple parts to build songs that shimmer with
levels and degrees of light." - The Wire: Adventures In Modern Music Upcoming

Pavel Pepperstein & Ilya Dmitriev - The Future

1

The first release on Koo Editions features a documentation of Pavel Pepperstein's exhibition in the Russian pavilion of the Venice Biennale in 2009. Since 2009 was the year of the centenary of the Futurist Manifesto, the thematic reference looks to the historical Avant-Garde: it is in fact a work of Russian Retrofuturism and bold beauty. The vinyl features an extended track of Ilya Dmitriev, a mixable retro electronic flow deliberately influenced by 80s disco archetype. Pepperstein's speech blows over the beat from the ultraworld and goes in an unexpected direction, far from any hedonistic exaltation, embracing a severe criticism of a future towards which he absolutely does not want to tend. The artist, of unquestionable fame and international value, takes strong positions against the western cultural narrative and art market policies which deserve to be slammed in the face of today's public, like MiG that lands in your living room.
Koo Editions comes on vinyl purposing a selected documentation from art exhibitions, interviews, intermedia collaborations. KOO EDITIONS was born with the idea of using the vinyl medium as a moving exhibition space, referring to the relationship between certain experiences of visual art with the listening one. Why the record? Because the catalogs don't speak. The record is a place: "Where" in fact, deputy to the sound testimony of something that has already happened, can be preserved to be able to enjoy it from a distance (of time and/or space). The intent of KOO EDITIONS is not to launch a precise style or a defined aesthetic, but to put the accent on the voice of peculiar and seminal attitudes linked to the world of visual art. The record introduces an inversion of focus, compared to what usually happens in artistic events where the eye and not the ear is the master. This is not a matter of sound art, vinyl art, net art or anything else: the medium is NOT the message, but conveys it. The target audience is both that of the lovers and regulars of artistic events. One of researchers of particular records, which can also be DJs looking for adventures. The former will be able to purchase an artist's reference at the affordable price of a vinyl edition without having to come across the typical costs that an art collector usually faces, while the latter similarly to what has always happened for film soundtracks, will be able to approach a cultural sector usually distant from them by listening. The editions will be published in limited and numbered series, as are the art multiples, to underline their cultural significance and their collectible aspect. They are treated with the care that non-homologated historical content deserves. They will also be accompanied by unpublished material such as interviews and critical texts that will be published train on train on the site kooeditions.art, under construction. KOO EDITIONS is an independent documentary project by Giovanni De Donà, and is the result of experiences, risks, interests and personal research.

Perry Blake - California LP 12"+7"

20th Anniversary edition pressed on Californian Sunburst vinyl with
newly designed artwork and bonus 7” featuring ‘Brown Eyes’ and the
previously unreleased ‘The Earth From Above’.
 ‘California’ was released in 2002 to massive critical acclaim and reached
a much wider audience across Europe. Features the hit singles ‘This
Life’ and ‘Ordinary Day’.
 The album features Glenn Garrett on bass, Neil Conti (David Bowie /
Prefab Sprout) on drums and Dickon Hinchcliffe (Tindersticks ) and Rick
Carter (The Sisters of Mercy) on keyboards.
 ‘California’ was mostly co-written with Italian composer Marco Sabiu,
who collaborated with and was mentored by the late, great Ennio
Morricone.
 Perry Blake, Sligo-born singer / songwriter, is one of music’s great
untapped resources. After his first three singles - taken from his debut
album - received Single Of The Week on Jo Wiley BBC Radio 1, Blake
moved to France, where he was met with critical acclaim with his next
four albums, touring Europe with Carla Bruni and writing two songs for
Francoise Hardy’s Platinum-selling album ‘Tant de belles choses’,
appearing on various TV shows in France as her special guest.
 You may very well wonder what to expect of an album with American
West Coast orientations from an Irishman who happens to be critically
acclaimed on the Continent but is largely ignored in Britain. Thankfully,
Blake lives up to his billing with apparent ease. His song writing is
evidently mature and melodic; he incorporates lush orchestral
arrangements with tender vocals; and combines pop-like hooks with a
deep sonic texture.
 ‘California’ is a thriving and absorbing collection of songs in which
orchestral arrangements strain with emotion, melodies thrive and bloom,
like The Verve at their peak, though far more fragile and balmy.
 ‘California’ is ether for the soul - a truly magnificent and touching
collection of frankly beautiful songs, which is up there with class of Bryan
Ferry, The Blue Nile and anyone else who can turn a night around.
 Blake’s glimpses of people living a state of mind is one of those great
escapes it’s very hard to get away from. His gift here is to take a
subdued, grown-up collection of songs but make them sound like they
deserve daytime radio.
 Radio - Radio 2 Jo Whiley session.

Pete Um - Twilight Jubilee

2

The new album from Cambridge's pop-surrealist Pete Um, a world unto
himself, but also a standard-bearer for the kind of heroic DIY
befuddlement and unfinching self-analysis that Deep Freeze Mice, Mick
Hobbs, Robert Storey and the Homosexuals minted
Pete Um is a lyrical troubadour and lo-f electronic maverick. Um has supported
Thom Yorke, received critical acclaim from The Wire and released more music
than most artists have written.Um's sprawling catalogue is a beast that can't be
tamed or reasoned with, but it's endlessly rewarding: time and time again he nails
that going-mad-in-the-potting-shed-ness that is the historic, and perhaps eternal,
English condition. Even at its most demented and disorderly your man sounds
like he's wrenching everything he possibly can out of his primitive keyboard-andmic set-up.
While the infuence of 80s UK squat-whimsy looms large, we're reminded too of
the synth-fuelled early-noughts of the The Soft Pink Truth and Safety Scissors,
and, more than anything or one, R. Stevie Moore – unexpectedly powerful and
unforgettable songs emerging unexpectedly out of awkward, enervating loops
and the more obviously pranky vignettes.
"It takes a while to enter Pete Um's world: his songs are brief, dense and
ramshackle; he revels in a reviewer's dismissal of his live act as "grindingly
awkward shithop", and wears his self-doubt on his sleeve - Can't Get Started is an
ironic title, for Um is prolifc across videos, blogs and music. A Remarkable,
coherent document, an excellent introduction to Um's misft creativity." The Wire

Petrels - The Dusk Loom

The Dusk Loom

14.06.2019

Oliver Barrett returns with his first Petrels album in three years - The Dusk Loom. Having put out a steady album-a-year since 2011, culminating in 2016’s Jörð, Barrett decided to take a step back from the project for a while, not wanting to releasing albums out of habit and wanting to be sure that there was something new to say.

The result is at once the most expansive but also personal Petrels release to date. Three years in the making, The Dusk Loom builds on the eclectic sonic palette of Barrett’s back catalogue but brings these sounds into sharper focus than ever before. Those hoping for the all-enveloping dynamics and textures of past Petrels releases will not be disappointed, but over the ten parts of The Dusk Loom, Barrett puts this trademark euphoric aural scree to work in new and unexpected ways.

Drawing on myriad influences as fans of Barrett’s have come to expect, the resulting themes of the album are perhaps woven more intricately than before. In The Dusk Loom, Barrett takes an evocative approach to storytelling that asks the listener to draw their own meanings from the clues and references running through the sounds and words. Finding inspiration in mythology - both ancient and new, the work and writing of Remedios Varo and William Blake, memory, death and cosmology to name just a few, Barrett pulls these seemingly disparate strands together into something that is unmistakably Petrels but which also points the way to something new.

“Petrels sidesteps the chilliness found in much of the music of his peers, replacing it instead with an almost spiritual ecstasy, his ravishing synths and almost choral vocal treatments calling out in cosmic, wide eyed wonder at the universe.” (Paul Margree, Louder Than War)
