Following his appearances on Wheel & Deal and Black Box, the next step in Killawatt's musical uprising comes courtesy of DJ Thinking's specialist imprint Box Clever. On both sides, whether solo or working with occasional collaborator Ipman, Killawatt has channelled the vibes of FWD>> circa 2004 - when Hatcha ruled the PP soundsystem with his brand of tribal funk, or Ongy-Bongy as it was christened by MC Crazy D.

Lhf - Ep 3: Cities Of Technology

Following on from 'EP1: Enter In Silence' and 'EP2: The Line Path', Keysound unveil 'EP3 : Cities of Technology', the third outing from the shadow-dwelling hive-mind known as LHF. The EP forms a precursor to their forthcoming and long awaited debut album. LHF were recently described by Fact Magazine as one of 'dubstep's most intriguing crews.' EP2 made The Quietus's best of 2011 list, described as feeling like 'wandering around darkened alleyways in South London, cigar in mouth, Indiana Jones hat jammed firmly onto your head.' According to Keysound label boss Blackdown, LHF 'sound like Sun Ra's hijacked Rinse FM and is using it to communicate with the heavens'. LHF are a rarely-sighted and shifting collective comprising Amen Ra, Double Helix, No Fixed Abode, Low Density Matter, Octaviour, Escobar Seasons, Solar Man and Lumin Project. Exhale acts as events and communications lieutenant for the clan. Members are as at home in London, Mumbai, LA, Rio, or New York, as they are stretching out into the near reaches of the cosmos or the past. The clan are signed to Dusk & Blackdown's Keysound Recordings, home to critically acclaimed recent albums by LV & Joshuha Idehen, Sully and Damu, which saw the imprint nominated for 2011 label of the year by XLR8R, DJ magazine, Fact Magazine and the Dubstep Forum Awards. LHF formed over five years ago and have left a trail of obscure mixes: Infiltration 1-6, Keepers Of The Light 1-3, mixes for Dusk & Blackdown on Rinse FM, Mary Anne Hobbs, Fact Magazine as well as the weekly United Vibes Sub FM show. It leaves a legacy of hundreds if not thousands of lost tracks. A tiny proportion of these will make up their debut album, due soon on Keysound. This EP is lead by two tracks from beat technician Double Helix, who delivers two quite different tributes to jungle. 'Supreme Architecture', with its celestial pads and dense drums, sees an unwitting subject questioning his own existence. 'LDN' is dark and deadly, imagining if Photek and the rest of the Metalheadz camp had attended early Forward>> raves at Velvet Rooms. On the flip, Amen Ra continues the jungle infiltration with 'Essence Investigation', a choppy, warm excursion that - with it's child giggling samples - suggests a return to earlier, more innocent times. Finally No Fixed Abode drops a unique bass experiment in 'Indian Street Slang', sounding like it was unearthed in the backstreets of Mumbai.

Scuba - Personality (2x12" & Cd)

2 X 12' vinyl with full length CD & poster packed within a full colour gatefold sleeve. Scuba is the production and DJ alias of Paul Rose, the curator of Hotflush Recordings, a label, which having released some of the most important tracks of the formative period of dubstep, has grown into a leading player in the wider world of electronic music. A celebrated and influential DJ, Scuba was voted #25 in Resident Advisor's 2011 poll of the world's Top 100 DJs and has also been nominated for several categories in DJ Magazine's Best of British 2011 Awards. Earlier this year Scuba released his 'Adrenalin' EP, picking up radio plays from Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, Rob Da Bank as well as Mistajam, illustrating how his sound has mutated into previously unexplored areas. Alongside 'Adrenalin, Scuba also released his addition to K7!'s DJ Kicks series which has made notable appearances on several 'Best of 2011 lists. On the 27th February, Scuba will release his third album through Hotflush. Entitled 'Personality' and featuring 11 brand new tracks, it takes in a wealth of genres across contemporary dance music, proving once again Scuba's place at the cutting edge of the electronic music scene. Preceding his LP will be 'The Hope'; pushing on from the tense atmospherics of previous Scuba material, the single fizzes with claustrophobic bass pressure and menacing narration. Backed by an exclusive non-album cut 'Flash Addict', 'The Hope' will proceed the album on the 6th February. Originally from London, Scuba relocated to Berlin in 2007, and released his debut album, 'A Mutual Antipathy' in 2008. The stylistic synergy of the album cemented his position as one of the most forward-thinking producers to emerge from the London bass scene. In the same year, Scuba founded the massively successful SUB:STANCE night at the legendary Berlin club Berghain. SUB:STANCE has since launched in New York with a look to expanding further in 2012. Scuba's second album, 'Triangulation', was released on Hotflush in early 2010, joining the likes of Mount Kimbie, Sepalcure, Joy Orbison, Untold, Sigha and George Fitzgerald on its enviable roster. With 'Personality' due for imminent release and plans for a live show in the works, Paul Rose's constantly developing world seems set to keep on turning in 2012.

An idea spawned from Ninja Tune's Amon Tobinand Doubleclick to place the anthem on rhythmic experiments similar to those of their recent breakthrough Two Fingersproject. Metallic drums, cataclysmic synth sounds, shattering glass, all while Kool Keith preaches on the use of drugs in pop culture. It works in a big way.

Dva - Pretty Ugly

Dva

Pretty Ugly

CDHDBCD010
Hyperdub
19.03.2012

DVA is a natural maverick, a one man spaceship, who on 'Pretty Ugly' shows off an uncanny ability to create urban pop and dance that's full of rich musicality and unusual textures and ideas. Like all the most exciting pop and dance music producers through the generations he has a real flair for looking from the outside in and creating his own unique colour filled 3D sound, with a knack of tethering off-key ideas to good songwriting and pop formats. He's a producer that has come through grime and then uk funky but he's always pulled the blueprints out of shape, messing with different time signatures and syncopations, unusual speeds and strange synths, upsetting vocalists and creating music that doesn't easily slot into the format for raves. Hyperdub saw this maverick nature as a blessing, and so he's gone into the studio and done what he needs to make the music he wants. As the presenter of Rinse FM's flagship breakfast show for several years and now the presenter of Hyperdub's Rinse FM show, he's sat right in the middle of London's urban music scene as a trusted and respected conduit. Several of the singers on 'Pretty Ugly' have been selected from favourite songs from his radio show. Natalie Maddix, Muhsinah, A.L., Zaki Ibrahim, Fatima and Cornelia, all entered the studio, leaving their comfort zone at the door, and wrote lyrics with a twist befitting of DVA's music. On the title track, Cornelia drops a lyric about frustration and insomnia. On 'Why You Do', A.L. sings about being cheated on in a surprising fashion that leaves her unsure how to feel. Fatima dreams of having more space on a new stripped down version of previous Hyperdub single 'Just Vybe', while Zaki Ibrahim sings about a strange, glowing love on 'Fire Fly'. On '33rd degree', Muhsinah launches an emotional coup while Natalie Maddix's 'Eye Know' sings a comforting lullaby as Scratcha creates a zingy synth forcefield around the vocal. Coupled with the strange uk funky inflected house and techno of 'Reach The Sun', 'Polyphonic Dreams' and 'Bare Fuzz', the lush broken beat of 'The Big Five' and the instrumental grime fanfare climax of 'Where I Belong', Scratcha DVA has come up with probably the finest match between album title and music in the history of the universe. 'Pretty Ugly' is what it is - sweet and sour, blaring and lush, rough and smooth. The man is a genius.

Naibu steps up with a massive debut long player for horizons, and this highly polished 'concept' album has everything. Our resident french drum and bass maestro blends together an impressive range of styles into an all encompassing theme of lush, spacious, melodic soundscapes featuring organic instrumentation and percussion, soulful vocals and biting electronic synthesis. 'Habitat', described by Naibu as a term chosen to encapsulate the idea of each track as a different room, a different experience, is so versatile, it rocks the dancefloor at times, while on occasions propels the listener far into the depths of chill-out territory and beyond (think Zero 7 and 4hero - yes, it's that good!).

The Host

12inchZIQ316LP
Planet Mu Records
19.03.2012

On his debut album The Host works in a spacey interzone, using vintage gear to create dramatic panoramas for the headphoned mind. He creates a unique suite of modern impressionistic sonics that tumble and waft in and out of the mix, earthed with strong melodies that take inspiration from net-age genres while never recalling them directly. Throughout, he masters all the potentials of vintage synths, drum machines and reverbs, along with guitar and bass to explore a sound that sets him apart from producers working on computers, creating something much more band-like but rich with lively micro-detail. Opening track 'Neo-Geocities' is full of drifting synths and distorted drum machine toms reminicent of a jerry-rigged footwork style. 'Angel Fire' melts muted guitar and gentle keys into haywire 808 rhythms, while 'Internet Archaelogy' dubs hazy melodies, tape edits and bass guitar into murky but upliftingly melodic shapes. 'Hidden Ontology' riffs majestically over arpeggiated synths, while '3AM Surfing' and 'Summer Solstice At Cape Canaveral' sound like savoured quiet moments after a good night out. 'Rainy Sequences / Phosphene Patterns' is a dense and ecstatic blur of sound, coalescing into a pretty guitar melody weaving through the lush noise while 'Aeontology's pastoral drift is probably best appreciated horizontal, and the delicate and exquisitely detailed spring mood of 'Birthday Bluebells' is a gentle closer. A focused and unique artist with a strong debut which often suggest a similar musical language as that of Kuedo's 'Severant'.

Cyrus - Hot Pan / Ears Lowered

Cyrus makes his debut release on GetDarker with his most encompassing work yet. The two track release comes primed with Cyrus' trademark of 'dubstep for the chest'. Opening track 'Hot Pan' which has been aired on a tidal swell of support from Radio 1, Kiss FM, Rinse FM and leading DJ throughout. Built on a wave of solid drums before unleashing its full force with a maniacal, mechanised baseline that writhes through the core of the track, wiring itself around the ambient tones, strings and hooks. Up next 'Ears Lowered'is a schizophrenic balance of the above. Delicate melodies combined with an elevating, progressive & relentless opening builds tension superbly before bringing in a chaotic drop. Showing off the sleazy and darker side of this pioneering sound with maximum impact. Cyrus delivers this special two-track release, a perfect calling card from a producer who holds such longstanding dubstep status.

Baron Zen & Tekblazer - Bass Attack / Goodtimes

Early last year, Baron Zen teamed up with regular collaborator, Tekblazer, to release the 'Electrik Surgery' EP on their long-time home, Stones Throw Records. The EP included guest spots from the likes of underground heroes such as Megabusive, Tchaka Diallo, Nathan No Face, Zackey Force Funk, Gary Davis and Stones Throw's Koushik. Executive produced by Peanut Butter Wolf and with a sleeve designed by Matt Rowland/Liger Vision (based on the sleeve for The Wreckin Cru's 1984 electro classic 'Surgery'), the EP evoked the spirit of that classic era of electronic sound and innovation. Now, almost a year on, skweee pioneer Daniel Savio has produced remixes of two tracks from 'Electrik Surgery', namely 'Bass Attack', and 'Goodtimes' (featuring Megabusive), for this 7' on the burgeoning UK-based Astro:Dynamics label. Savio's strutting and swaggering percussion fuses with the golden-era energy of the originals, making this cross-hemisphere link-up the perfect fit. Add to that the artwork, which has also been expertly designed and illustrated by Stones Throw's Matt Rowland/Liger Vision (building on the theme from the original EP sleeve), and you have a pretty sweet little package.

Terror Danjah Ft Meleka & D.o.k. - U Make Me Feel / Morph 2

Terror Danjah's first Hyperdub single of 2011 is an amazing coup, pulling out of the archive a near-perfect collaboration with singer Meleka, where Terror tempers his grimey production, veering uncharacteristically towards featherlight lushness, while lacing Meleka's sensuous, pitched melisma with a deceptively vicious sub. Terror's crisp, asymmetric bed of stuttering drums remind us of a time gone by when Timbaland's falter-funk R&B rhythm programming was an inspiration. 'Morph 2' featuring D.O.K. is the yang to 'U Make Me Feel's yin, drawing gruff, serious strings through hall of mirrors micro-edits, dragging the riff backwards, punctuating it with gremlin chuckles and 'woo's and running the pattern against a tense bleepy melody. It's a dark and vertiginous rush with all the anger of Grime at it's ferocious peak.
