Chimpo - On The Dial EP

Chimpo

On The Dial EP

12inchAPHA026
Astrophonica
02.05.2022

Manchester’s veteran Junglist Chimpo steps up on Astrophonica to tune in to his pirate radio influences and broadcast an EP full of explosive Jungle energy and Hardcore charm. Phone line crew, this ones for you . . .

“On The Dial is my take on the Jungle music I grew up listening to on Manchester pirate radio stations in the nineties. The two main pirates that played Jungle are referenced directly in two of the tracks: Buzz FM and Luv NRG. The tracks reference styles I’ve picked up from some of my favourite producers growing up: Danny Breaks, Krust, Die, Sappo, L Double, etc. Rig Doctor is more Old Skool using a sample referencing the guy who would fix up the technicals in running a pirate and styled by early Hardcore Jungle Techno. The whole EP is essentially a love letter to one of the first genres I fell in love with on the format I really learned about it on.” - Chimpo.

Rig Doctor kicks off the weekend with a rush of high speed vocals and a homage to the ones behind the scenes making the station tick… The Rig Doctor. Up after ads is the positive lunch time roller LUV NRG and a trademark Chimpo bubble to set speed. Stay up past bedtime and you’ll hear the mysterious Buzz Army with its murky bass riff and graveyard shift aesthetic. Finishing things off Sunday style, Chimpo drops some science on the stoned groove of Broad.

Roza Terenzi & jd - Third Nature EP

A subconscious inhale of precious tranquillity, Step No.4 hosts a rare and sentimental collaboration between Roza Terenzi and Australian virtuosic enigma jd. An intrinsic connection of friendship, understanding and mutual exchange of instinctive musical roots in the form of EP Third Nature. Divided by different continents, live recordings from a studio in Melbourne have been sent via cyberspace and sculpted into four genre expansive explorations, from new-age junkyard to devious dnb.

Textural research is extensively carried out through the records A side; polyrhythms galore as hand drums collide with shimmered shakers; forming tripped out tessellations. A leftfield nod to Madonna drools below the opening track, an anchor for mind-wandering timbre and chordal bliss, glorious saxophone trickles throughout an uplifting swell of suspended melodics. Constant evolution as things progress to a downtempo subterranean soundscape, A2 dropping deeper into pulsating bass, ricochets of drum cuts flickering in and out to haze out rhythmic stagnation yet maintain a complex flow. In contrast, the B side speeds soar, firstly a dreamy, steamy progressive peak timer; playful in nature yet packing a punch. The closer showcasing a sexy sinister side, dark drum and bass where pitched gongs hover and drip, rough and ready bass growls and breaks are sliced and diced with Michelin quality.

This highly anticipated pairing proves a contemporary form of analog/electric hybrid collaboration; an endless portal into groundbreakingly tweaked visions and the mergings of minds.

Various - Ghetto Dubz Vol.2

Various

Ghetto Dubz Vol.2

2x12inchDUBZ002V
Ghetto Dubz
18.06.2019

This Ltd edition vinyl release see’s a 50 track digital album whittled down to an 8 track sampler encompassing what label bosses Vinyl Junkie and Rachael E.C have determined to be the tracks that represent them best. The selection is predominantly on the junglist tip with a sprinkling of Drum & Bass here and there, which is basically what their label Ghetto Dub is all about.

The proceedings are kicked off by Birmingham born but Bristol based jungle overlord, the man they call Aries, who comes in with a real deep and bass heavy roller called Pre-Rolled, guaranteed to get everyone on their feet and feelin’ the vibes. This is followed by a rising star of the UK jungle scene; Java, who brings in the amens with a ragga style vocal lick for his track Screwface, which has been slaying dancefloors on dub for the last couple of months. Another artist that is really making a BIG name for himself lately is Veak. He comes in HARD with his first offering Lawd A Mercy which is a definite pull up track with a filthy bassline that will nail your head to the dancefloor. X-E-Dos concludes the first vinyl with Feel For Me which is a hard hitting but atmospheric drum fuelled workout, keeping the vibes rolling and maintaining the energy levels perfectly.

Enter the second vinyl and Veak is back, this time teaming up with another UK jungle don; Kumarachi. The combination of these two production masterminds has manifested something quite special in this awesome track Chrome Siren. Punchy in your face amens laced with more killer bass riffs and a mesmerising female vocal make this a definite for the front of your box. Sypmtom steps up next and adds that dark techy vibe like only he knows how; Come Mash Up maintains the jungle vibe but goes on a journey into the realms of drum & bass. Galvatrons track, Buss Up Shot is pure jungle, no doubt about that. Chopped up amens and a deep rumbling bassline are complemented with a beautifully melodic piano section. Last but by no means least, the man like SR takes the limelight with another wicked amen workout. Special Ops VIP gives a nod to the mid 90’s for sure… Wicked oldskool vibes and a sure fire hit with all the junglists that remember those times.

Xenophobia - Bring On The Rush

Xenophobia

Bring On The Rush

2x12inchXENO23LP
Xenophobia
13.03.2017

(2x12" Vinyl) + CD

* Xenophobia is Sid Truelove (DJ Terminator) and Zillah Minx (The Acid Queen), founding mainstays of the groundbreaking Anarcho Punk group Rubella Ballet, augmented by the singular talents of Bert Fuzz (MC Skallywag from Spiral Tribe). They were among the first to turn on and tune into the early nineties' rave scene, Sid's interest growing out of his long-standing fascination with acid house and its associated pirate radio underground network.
* Already established as an innovative compositional talent thanks to his work with Rubella Ballet, Sid resolved to extend his exploration of the new sonic horizons of the times by investing every penny he had into the era's key electronic equipment; an Atari computer running Cubase a program for sequencing, and a Yamaha SY77 digital workstation and a four-track Tascam Portastudio for recording vocals. Armed with this new technology, Sid set about creating his own style of Rave music with the sweetly mesmeric sound of Zillah's angelic vocals, enhanced by
Skallywag's unique MC-ing, which imparted the new songs with a tangible sense
of being at an actual rave.
* Hypo Psycho was Xenophobia's first release with a 4 track 12' EP being issued in late 1991 on Xeno Recordings (XENO1T) Track 3 from the Hypo Psycho EP, 'Encounter' was also included on the Theory Records Beyond the Threshold compilation in late 1991 (TR101LP) Into Combat was Xenophobia's second vinyl offering, a 4 track 12' EP issued in early 1992 on XENO Recordings (XENO23T) Xenophobia made numerous special guest PA's with Spiral Tribe at illegal underground events in London and further afield around the M25, moving as fast as the scene itself to stay one step ahead of the Old Bill's pernicious attentions. The most famous of these was at Castlemorton in Worcestershire where 65,000 ravers congregated by word of mouth alone to spontaneously combust into the biggest guerilla party in Europe.
At the time of the event, Spiral Tribe were tapping into the zeitgeist's mainline, their recently released eponymous debut EP 'Breach of the Peace' featured Xenophobia's monster track 'Doet' that included the compelling lyric 'Rush your f**kin' bollocks off'.
Xenophobia's next release was set to be 'The Wobbler' on Kickin Records. However, the label had other ideas; pulling the single and subsequently installing the track as a B-side to 'Rushing the House' in May 1992. The lead track again captured the context of the era, being capped by the line 'Ecstasy, it really gets me going / Gets me so I don't know what I'm doin''. 'Rushing the House' stormed straight in at Number 20 in the National Dance chart, Released at the height of the pirate radio days it was getting played on every station, seven days a week.

* Telstar snapped up 'Rushing the House' and released it on Rave Generator a CD compilation that also featured the Prodigy, Acen, Altern 8, Messiah, Utah Saints and many more.
Sid recalls a phone call from Skallywag with directions to Castlemorten a free rave initiated by Spiral Tribe. The event provided him with the perfect opportunity to hand out a shed load of white labels to DJs at all the rigs. He remembers being with Zillah Minx and Scallywag, walking into one of the biggest tents whereupon the DJ spotted them and immediately killed the tune he was playing and slammed on a white label of 'Rushing the House'- The place exploded - everyone knew the words, as by now as it was on constant rotation across the pirate radio
underground.
Its pivotal lyric, 'Go to the flow with an E rush me, oo rush me, ee rush me' was on the lips of nearly every raver on the scene and is still as infectious today as it was 23 years ago. Big shout out to Spiral Tribe, Bedlam and many more underground systems, coz the music scene in the UK would not be the same without the sacrifices some of you made for the cause. The introduction of the Criminal Justice Bill made Castlemorten the last quality free rave of the year and put an end to Raves' as we knew them. 1992 was the summer we will all remember as when the Government
put a stop to everyone enjoying them self by enforcing draconian laws on innocent party goers.
Mid 1992 saw Xenophobia perform as headline act at 'Rave World', sending the packed, 5000 capacity, venue into a frenzy with their smash hit 'Rush in the House' and 'The Wobbler'. Rare footage from the night has been edited together for the first time in 20 years and is now available to watch on You Tube.

* Touchdown 95.2 FM was one of the leading lights amid the pulsing galaxy of hardcore radio stations in London. DJ Nut Nut gave the band their Xenophobia in Da House show. Broadcast live every week, it spun some of the best underground hardcore anthems as well as their own, breaking all the DTI regulations on broadcasting etiquette f'ing and blinding all over the airwaves as if you were actually at a rave.
'Rush in the House' has been played year after year on pirate radio and more recently on BBC Radio. 23 years on from its original release, this enduring interest has encouraged Sid to compile a double album of hardcore hits titled Bring on the Rush, featuring original nineties hardcore rave anthems 'Rush in the House' and 'The Wobbler', plus 14 more hardcore tracks written in 1992 at the peak of the underground hardcore explosion.

Serious history business: 'Some Justice' was the first time Micky Finn and Aphrodite joined forces and launched a partnership that would change drum & bass history. Prior to them linking, Urban Shakedown comprised of Aphrodite and Claudio Giussani who had a run of fantastically euphoric hardcore crossover records during that golden rave era. 'Some Justice' landed in 91 and the instantly goosebumping vocal cut 'Burnin' Passion' landed in 93. Both of them enjoyed these touch-ups in 94, which still sound fantastic today. Feel the burn.

Jonny Faith - On Lock

Jonny Faith

On Lock

12inchHF021V
Heard And Felt
10.06.2021

Premieres from Data Transmission and Bolting Bits. Early support from Hospital, Huey Morgan, Rupture, Fanu, Rob Luis, Anthony Kasper (Fokuz), Red Rack'em, Bandcamp Weekly, etc.

150 copies pressed on 180 gram vinyl. Picture shows the HF021VFELT edition which comes with 'Nuthin' But a Jungle Thang' die-cut felt sleeve insert (in assorted colours), with Heard and Felt embroidered fabric tag. HF021V edition is the same 180g vinyl without the felt sleeve insert.

With music from Jonny Faith's recent Night Lights EP appearing in Grand Theft Auto and best of 2020 lists including Gilles Peterson's, you might think Jonny would continue to mine his take on hip hop and broken beat. Well, all in good time. He's been ready to enter the jungle for 20 years, and he's not waiting any longer.

Now based in Melbourne, Jonny first got involved in music in Edinburgh as a DJ and turntablist in the 90s, getting hooked on jungle, drum & bass, hip hop and the hybrids of these championed by the Mo'Wax label. Formative experiences included hearing DJ Hype spinning in Newcastle, seeing the Roni Size/Reprazent live show with two drummers and hanging out at cult Edinburgh club night Manga, where residents G-Mac and DJ Kid hosted the likes of Marky, Grooverider and J Majik.

Jonny was keen to start making his own sounds, signing up for an electronic music production course. But it wasn't quite what he was after.

'The course turned out to be more house-oriented,' Jonny recalls. 'Sampling wasn't on the curriculum, and the students weren't allowed to touch the Akai S900, the sampler used in lots of the early jungle classics.'

When Jonny did start releasing his own productions a few years later, he was starting to explore the experimental beat scene around the time Flying Lotus and Hudson Mohawke (another Scottish turntablist) were starting to make their mark.

Jonny continued to widen his sonic palette, adding elements of dub, jazz, funk, electronica and broken beat, and picking up fans like Radio Nova Paris, KCRW, Vice and Clash Magazine along the way. But he's never been more than one degree of separation from his jungle/D&B roots. He continued to buy and play the music, did the odd D&B remix and snuck sonic elements and techniques into his tracks at various tempos. Over the years his releases have shared labels with the likes of Peshay, Om Unit, Drumagick, Reso, Kid Drama and Danny Scrilla.

Now, more than 20 years after those early experiences in Edinburgh, Jonny unveils his first jungle/D&B EP, On Lock. And it sounds like he's been making this music the whole time. In a way, he has.

The single 'Open My Eyes' bursts out the gate, chopping not only the breaks and the soul for a tune that sounds like Amerie's '1 Thing', or some Just Blaze chipmunk soul, reimagined for the 174 BPM crew. Jonny started this one as a hip hop beat for a live routine on his MPC, but it only really came together when he reframed the groove around a D&B rhythm. Next up, Jonny tries a similar trick on his own boom bap tune 'Stay in Your Lane' from the 'Night Lights' EP. His new Step Off Mix totally recontextualises US MC Lady K's slinky soulful rap and hooks with a tough and funky junglist groove. One for fans of the old Roni Size/Bahamadia collab. 'Create' then spaces things out just a touch, with atmospheric but propulsive drumfunk. Vinyl bonus track 'Nuthin' But a Jungle Thang' layers cascading amen breaks, timestretched vocals and a massive double bass-line over the wah guitars and synth whistling of a G-funk era classic.

With early support for Jonny Faith's take on jungle/D&B coming from Hospital Records, Rupture (Rinse FM) and Fanu (Metalheadz), Jonny is ready to be welcomed (back) into the scene.

The 18th offering from Instinct features four different acts, each with their own take on moving the dancefloor. Pinder P has a funky house/UK garage flavour to it but laced with wonderfully deep bass heavy and shaky enough to dislodge fillings. Papa Nugs' 'Super Beagle' delves even further into the raw aesthetics of early hardcore and especially the reggae-tinted futurism of Shut Up & Dance, Ragga Twins and Hype. DJ Crisps has arguably the least retro sound, relying on very steady and sturdy, more US garage-slanted beat foundations, before the EP is rounded off with the bubbling, skippy 'Only You' from Yosh, re-connected with a subtle reggae flavour to its UKG swagger.

A brand new label within the Vinyl Fanatiks family. AmenTec is a collaboration between Amen Brother and Emotec, which is an electro/techno label run by Damo B, who hosts a weekly show on Unity FM in Manchester. The idea being that one label creates two tracks and the other brings in their talent to remix them.

First off the bat is MOY, an electro breakbeat supremo who creates the most in-depth soundscapes in dance music. And the two tracks on this release are probably some of his finest work to date, sweeping pads, rolling amen and squelchy 303. To rough them up a bit, Amen Brother bring in two old school producers from way back in the early 90’s. Fugitive, who is Dave from Aquasky, bringing back to life one of his earliest aliases that use to release on Underdog Recordings in 93/94, utilising the skillset of his former jungle pseudonym and Wolverhampton’s hardcore soldier Silver Fox, former house mate of Goldie, who dons his rave mask and goes in hard and heavy with a monster of a remix.

This release brings together the best of the electro world and the finest of the hardcore world and creates a release worthy of a place within the collection of any dance music connoisseur.
