Loess - Pocosin

Loess

Pocosin

CDMD251CD
n5MD
17.02.2017

Pocosin is the first full-length album from Loess in over 10 years.

During the last ice age glaciers slowly carved away the landscape creating mineral rich sediment. For hundreds of thousands of years melt water carried this fine-grained sediment downstream to parts of North America. In some areas strong winds carried this sediment and deposited it forming a network of ridges and dunes. These deposits of loose
silty wind-blown, or aeolian, sediment are called Loess.

Flash forward to the present, and the duo of Clay Emerson and Ian Pullman may seem to have gone the way of the glaciers and all but disappeared. Instead, their signature loose aural silt has been slowly and methodically accumulating and now makes up their new full-length Pocosin.

Others may have no point of reference and Pocosin is a welcome introduction to the sound of Loess; in a mere blink of an eye from when they began.

Mondkopf - They Fall, But You Don't

* New from In Paradisum also the home of Low Jack and December. This album is the most straight-forward and cohesive Mondkopf album to date due to his switch to analog synthetisers. «They Fall...» has been recorded live in his room in Paris at night on the sadly memorable month of November 2016.

* The record has something familiar with Mondkopf's previous output with the raw textures and half-light atmospheres, but the rest is a radical change for him. The synth pads of "They Fall... "are neither retro nor futuristic. In addition to Paul's fragile vocals, they exhale a distinct feeling of just being there. The tracks follow their own path by being focused and vital. "They Fall But You Don't" is the singular manifesto of a relationship to electronic music that leaves out the ideas of innovation and genre and more resembles the language of a new folk music; deeply
evocative, powerful and free.

Slow Porn - Prise De Vue #1

My Favorite Robot is proud to welcome the return of DJ and production duo Slow Porn with a stunning new compilation album. After releasing a critically acclaimed EP on the Canadian label back in December 2015, Slow Porn now come back with a fantastically curated 18 track compilation that proves the richness of their sound goes way beyond their studio and the dancefloor.
Made up of Meant Records label boss Remain, and fellow Frenchman and La dame Noir label head honcho, Phred Noir, the duo have shared many DJ booths over the
years leading to this collaborative project. This new compilation, which also includes Slow Porn sounds, is an expert experiment that finds them delivering 'a filthy groove and slow-paced mood music for confidential and undisclosed dancefloors.'
Taking in a delicious and diverse selection of artists such as label regular Fairmont, via machine music maverick Richard Norris and numerous other luminaries such as
Rodion, Rework and Vosper, this is a carefully constructed mix where a libidinous and spaced-out mood is king.
Things start exquisitely with the spacious and lush 'Lost In Love' by Amevicious before touching on broken disco with French spoken words, percolating kosmische,
languorous and slow motion deep house and synth-tactic steppers that gently nudge up the BPM. Mixing beautiful drones with heavenly chords, leggy drums with pixelated
pads, Slow Porn plot a journey through space that is wide open and inviting, laid back but vitally engaging.
Their own cut 'Silver and Lust' is rugged yet colourful, with aloof female whisperings and modulated synths really getting under your skin. From there trippy synths continue
to squelch and fat bottomed drums hold a constant groove before things warp up perfectly on the malfunctioning disco sounds of Kieran Holden.
The aural pleasure seekers, that are Slow Porn, truly come correct with this wide ranging and absorbing selection.

Jesse Osborne-lanthier - Unalloyed, Unlicensed, All Night!

dedicated to promote young and evolving artists and to present musical diamonds in the rough, raster-noton is curating the unun series which name refers to the chemical elements 111-119. »unalloyed, unlicensed, all night!« is jesse osborne-lanthier's first release on raster-noton, and the ninth and final release of this series.jesse osborne-lanthier is a berlin / montreal based, canadian electronic music producer and multidisciplinary artist. his erratic research process incorporates the urgency of dance music and conceptual electronics by disassembling their grammar and acting through it. refusing to follow the etiquette of a particular musical genre, he explores many creative practices in order to generate clashes of mood, expectation and technique.
»unalloyed, unlicensed, all night!« was recorded by osborne-lanthier a mere two hours before a live set in paris. its specific purpose was to generate a response from the audience, to stimulate their bodies through sound. the toolbox for this task was stocked with automatic call-and-response music tropes drawn from EDM, big-room house, trance, and online production tutorials. between the producer's idiosyncratic by-the-numbers process and the rushed nature of the composition, the final product is rendered unpredictable; each signifier transforms into a distorted ghost of itself. this allows for unexpected responses to manifest on the dance floor as well as in the listener's space of existence.

Vit Fana - Irrgang

Irrgang' is the highly anticipated debut album of Ossian Ohlsson's Vit Fana project. Representing a new generation of experimental musicians from Scandinavia pushing the limits of contemporary industrial music, 'Irrgang' is the culmination of a process perfected over several years. While the comfortless drones, ear-piercing noise bursts and razor-sharp synth work may be the album's backbone, the signature trademark of earlier Vit Fana recordings is present in Ohlsson's haunting vocals and the subtle hints of brutal beauty. A highly personal musical statement, 'Irrgang' stands with one foot firmly rooted in the tradition of early industrial noise music, while effectively creating a grotesque universe of its own.

Carsten Jost - Perishable Tactics

In the midst of a busy year, full of wildly-varied accomplishments, David Lieske (aka Carsten Jost) has surprised us all with an unannounced 11-track full-length album on Dial-- his first since 2000's "You Don't Need A Weatherman..." In the interim he's kept busy curating countless releases on Dial, the label he co-runs with Peter "Lawrence" Kersten, celebrated a 15 year label anniversary with an all-encompassing 2LP/various artists'

compilation, released a gallery-edition album of his black ambient collaboration Misanthrope CA with Robert Kulisek, "Deathbridge" and launched a new magazine project (also with Kulisek) named after the speed of light i.e. "299792458m/s". All this activity, even after his recent trans-atlantic relocation from Berlin to New York City, mainly to open the American branch of Mathew Gallery has surely taken us all by welcome surprise.
Out of all of the Dial house and techno artists, Carsten Jost has always represented the most precise brand of exquisitely doom-laden house, laced with equally strong doses of melancholy and beauty. Here on "Perishable Tactics", Lieske runs through his distinctively stealthy low-slung beat-mospheres, leaning towards a decidedly low-lit and sultry space, but mixed with a fresh, gently arc-ing feeling of romance and dare I say itLove() Tellingly he's seen it fit to include 2007's "Love"-one of his best e.p. tracks from a split release with Efdemin. But while "Love" represents a climbing and yearning towards a place where love might reside, the remaining new tracks debuting here seem to represent a place where this love actually exists. This feeling is woven into his deep, medium tempo, detroit-inflected house rhythms, accented with crystalline keys, disembodied voices at times and gently soaring strings. While anger may be less in the forefront here it is important to notice that these tracks are ripe with the balance of joy and unease inherent in house. There is definitely a newfound languidity here that feels particularly like a moment shared by two (perhaps amongst many) but the atmosphere still remains decidedly pensive. See "Ambush" with it's strolling beat, moody yet sweet chords and chilling atmosphere later joined by thunder cracking in an almost-approving-manner a safe-distance away.
Of course diehard fans will find satisfaction knowing that Lieske's delectable angst hasn't completely abated. Title track "Perishable Tactics" takes a disarmingly peaceful setting and rolls a heavy fog over it to herald a sure-to-arrive fate that awaits us all. (See also "Army Green".). But with "Dawn Patrol" the whispering hi-hat and gently clanking rhythm offset by rolling strings marries the old and new Carsten Jost most successfully. All of this atmosphere bookended by ambient intro and outro tracks by Misanthrope CA make for a perfectly foreboding, elegant and deliciously dark new album release by Carsten Jost.

Vermont - I I

Vermont

I I

CDKOMCD133
Kompakt
01.03.2017

Following their much-acclaimed surprise debut album VERMONT from 2014, Motor City Drum Ensemble's Danilo Plessow and Innervisions' Marcus Worgull reunite for more synth daydreaming on the suitably titled 'II'. The new outing continues where the first full-length left off, strolling further down the luminous and undulating path that the duo turned into, influenced in equal measures by kosmische, krautrock, minimal wave and synth soundtracks.
This latest batch of instrumental cuts opens with the strictly balearic vibe of NORDERNEY, a softly swinging, light-footed recording with a keen sense for structure. Featuring a guest performance from Robbert Van Der Bildt (aka Kaap) on guitar, it's a telling starting point for the album that - similar to Vermont's self-titled debut - successfully navigates between economic, careful studio arrangements and playful, incidental exploration further pushing into jam session territory. Van Der Bildt's guitar returns on the plucky, curious UFER, where Vermont showcase a renewed sense for jazz-like improvisation - same as on the cuts DSCHUNA, CHANANG and WENIK, which also include contributions from Dermot O'Mahony and Tadhg Murphy on strings.
Still, Vermont's synth contraptions remain the album's main attraction, with the extensive array of gear encompassing an entire panopticon of analog bling - from Arp Oddysey and Moog Prodigy to Fender Rhodes, Juno and Prophet, list-studying gear heads will find lots to drool upon. Consequently, tracks like CHEMTRAILS, UNRUH or GEBIRGE err on the machine side of things, expertly interweaving arpeggiated sequences for maximum atmospheric effect. Foreboding, slightly menacing synth motives as on SKORBUT or CHEMTRAILS are perfectly balanced with the casual ambient of HALLO VON DER ANDEREN SEITE and the nostalgic warmth of DEMUT - while the gentle push of the masterful KI-BOU even carries a whiff of classic deep house, linking the Vermont project to Plessow and Worgull's main careers as dance floor movers and shakers.
Continually intriguing, immersive and texturally rich, each one of Vermont's new pieces betray the experience, precision and determination of the producers involved - while opening up Worgull and Plessow'a vocabulary for patient experimentation and subtle discoveries. A musical treat for synth aficionados - and everyone else, if you ask us.

'When Georges Méliès created Trip To The Moon in 1902, the world was just beginning to feel the tightening, yet exciting effects of another giant leap in modern civilization with the Industrial Age. It was a place in time that was transformable and in all dimensions of an evolutionary process: social, economic and political revolutions were buzzing. As man worked hard under the Sun, exposing his efforts and determination, it was the Moon that hatched his dreams. It was a time of realization and a time of romance'. - Jeff Mills

  • 6: ) Eki

Subtext's latest signing is Joshua Sabin, a Scottish musician and artist based in Leith, Edinburgh.

* Joshua's debut album Terminal explores humans' relationship with environment and space, and how this experience is augmenting us as we further embrace a digital age. Our structures of communication, exploration, and discovery are mediated by technological shifts and we exist in simultaneity between our physical environment and emerging cyberspaces with a blended perception of embodiment and orientation within both.

* Sirens reverberating through station tunnels, fluctuating harmonics of subway engines, echoing tannoy systems, piercing screams of electromagnetic fields.

* The sonic material of this album is composed exclusively of field-recordings captured in transit through Kyoto, Tokyo, and Berlin, in addition to electromagnetic field recordings captured in Glasgow and Edinburgh. By interrogating the sonic properties of our physical environment, Terminal imagines the sonic landscapes of these dualistically navigable 'cyberspaces' we transiently create and move through interacting with our world.

Hatti Vatti - Worship Nothing

New Moon Recordings' cornerstone artist Hatti Vatti is set to release his long-awaited debut album, entitled Worship Nothing, on 3 February 2014.
Having released a string of 12"s since 2009, Hatti Vatti's sound has previously flowed seamlessly between deep dubstep and a minimal, Autonomic sound. Releases for Mindset, New Moon, On The Edge, and Absys have marked this Polish producer apart for his cinematic take on bass-driven, dub-rooted electronic music. Hatti Vatti closed 2013 with the release of Algebra, a stripped-down mini-album of Middle Eastern field recordings and ambient techno for Nowe Nagrania.
Worship Nothing sees Hatti Vatti's artistic journey culminate into a single, coherent vision - a vision that is simultaneously spacious and deeply intimate. A futuristic sheen of 80's nostalgia penetrates much of Worship Nothing, even within the familiar restrained dub of "Struggle" (with Polish vocalist Sara Brylewska) and "Wonderful World" (with Irish vocalist Cian Finn). The organic synths remain In "Treasure" and "72 Dub", though the rhythms become decidedly more manic, hinting towards the feverish feel of footwork while remaining decidedly introspective. Floating, haunted vocals pervade the half-step of "Tokyo" a shimmering collaboration with Manchester producer Synkro. Also hovering around the minimal 170bpm sound are "Synthesis" and "Black Flowers", which features vocals from Lady Katee. Slowing down to a garage-tinted swing, "Nights" is yet another collaboration with a UK artist - Versa.
Throughout Worship Nothing, Hatti Vatti has created an atmosphere that draws the listener deep into his own world of beautifully crafted beats, ambient textures, and sub-bass frequencies. Grab your headphones and float away...

Spygeist - 7 Rooms

* "7 Rooms" is an album that was born in the rooms of an house accompanied only by the moonlight and the union of spirit, mind and heart, which give rise to a succession of compositions by jazz nuances, neo-melodic and electro-acoustic. All this is part of an intent that little strives to bring the listener in scattered places of imagination, giving freedom of movement within their musical journey. "Hanged" electro-acoustic song by low and soft lines are linked with the mystical sound of drum, played strictly by hand. "Detonica" is a piece where rhythm of past ages are transformed into a sinuous ballad, punctuated by the crescendo of a plot that thickens as it scrolls with the inclusion of classical and electronic instruments. The fullness of this passage is immediate transportation. "Confidential Love" A song by the fresh air like a late spring afternoon, which mixes acoustic and electronic instruments for a nice chemistry between melody and absence of rhythm.

* "WoolCover", the embrace of a love of neighbor, love love, narrow; the love that you have next, love you breathe, love unfiltered, the love that homogeneous thoughts and feelings of the listener. (Voice by Anna Fabri). In "Malinchonica" sounds and melodies are more gloomy structured. "Light Pipe", a leap in a purely electronic piece with broken rhythms but softened by melodies. "Velocity" sounds scratchy, high-speed, characterized by the Drum 'n' Bass sound. A project created by the "observation" of the schizophrenic society.

12inchSKYWALKING02LP
Sky Walking
11.11.2016

After releasing their own debut record in 2014 the Hamburg based group Sky Walking formed by Peter Kersten, Christian Naujoks and Richard von der Schulenburg now celebrates the launch of their self-titled label. By bringing together an international line-up of artists mostly associated with the new and experimental music scenes in cities like Hamburg, Berlin and New York Sky Walking not only establishes a link between different locations and their specific (local) scenes - with the Golden Pudel Club in Hamburg somehow functioning as a Bermuda triangle - but also between different generations of artists from these scenes.
By choosing Sergei Tcherepnin's "Queer 1" as the first track on 41'36'', as the record is simply called, indicating the length of the album in John Cage style, the compilation not just draws on the legacy of early modular synthesizers (his uncle invented the "Serge"), but also - in a manifesto like way - points out the hybrid and genre-bending approach many of the artists on this record share. The ten tracks on the record are characterized by an openness towards improvisation and collaboration as well as an experimental attitude towards technology. The outcome is sometimes weird and nerdy, sometimes playful and humorous - never taking either the music categories "new" or "experimental" too seriously.
Konrad Sprenger for example, featured with the track "Distain", invented a robotic multi-channel electric guitar, which uses the strings as frequency generators. It is tuned and set into motion by various electronically controlled mechanical movements. An even more performative quality has the Black Metal influenced duo Misanthrope CA, whose members Robert Kulisek and David Lieske prefer to play their dark and drony ambient tracks in neoprene suits. Jazz influences can be heard both in the fully improvised, cartoon-like piece by Sky Walking themselves and the filmic quality of Philipp Sollman's and John Gürtler's collaboration in "Gegen die Zeit". While these two tracks were produced in the studio, Eve Essex and Dan Fox as well as Nowerk (F#X and Christian Naujoks) work with different means of live-recording in their collaborative projects. Rather mysterious appearances are the ones by Keller G and Gebrochene Beine. Whereas the latter mixes broken beats with a saxophone going wild, the first offers a dark and atmospheric, slightly uncanny soundscape. In-between longtime resident at Golden Pudel Club Nika Son takes us on a tense-ridden sonic journey with her track "Drissk", purposefully paying tribute to the grand dames of the synthesizer.
The cover is another hard-to-categorize element of this new release featuring a sketch of an alien-like two part cyber-ceramic sculpture including motion-, light-, audio- and temperature-responsive sensors by artist duo Amy Lien and Enzo Camacho. It thereby echoes the blurred boundaries between the auditive and the visual, for a perspective shared by most of the artists represented on Sky Walking, as well as their roots in the 1960s and the graphic scores that since then have become an art form in its own right.

CDTRESOR291CD
Tresor
10.02.2017

When Tresor founder Dimitri Hegemann stumbled into a former bank vault in East Berlin on March 13th 1991, he had little idea that the space he had unlocked would fast become one of Berlin's most influential and enduring techno clubs. "We didn't know what would happen 10 months later," he says. "We signed a lease for a year. Which eventually got renewed for another three months, and another three months.."

As Tresor celebrates its 25th anniversary with this work of artists from the US, Germany, China, France, Austria, Italy and the UK, it is worth dwelling on how the cultural conditions that birthed Detroit techno - economic neglect and broken industry - were mirrored by the disused bunkers and impromptu parties of post-unification East Berlin, where techno found new, vigorous expression.

Today, though the boom and bust of globalised capitalism has filled the void that followed the Berlin Wall, and techno has become a worldwide industry, we face a new political chapter, one defined by populism, nationalism and mistrust. Contemporary creatives should take inspiration from Tresor's story, an extraordinary experiment born from improvisation, resourcefulness and social neglect that uplifted the spirits of inner city communities for a quarter-century.

This record marks the spirit of those 25 years of creativity, a paean to the psychedelic music of Dimitri's youth. From the signature magnetic soundscapes of Vainqueur to the dark textures of upcoming Beijing producer Shao; from Jon Hassell's slow epicurean volutes, to the ritual auras of Marcelus and Claudia Anderson's contributions; from the dub-infused pioneering programming of Juan Atkins and Moritz von Oswald, to Mønic's enthralling cadences, it represents some of the old and new names that continually epitomise Tresor's perennial spirit of ingenuity. "We were space pioneers," says Dimitri.

The East Berlin of 1991 may have disappeared to gentrification, with Tresor's lonely vanguard joined by an army of venues catering to an international array of clubbers benefiting from low cost travel, many of whom settle in the city for good. Berlin is Europe's economic engine, headquarters to global industry and sole traders alike, where Polish, Kurdish and English are as likely to be spoken as German. That range of influences is felt in all areas of life, not least in the city's music.

"Without Tresor, Berlin would not be what it is today," concludes Dimitri. "Even though it sounds a bit pretentious, it is true. Tresor was the prototype for an extraordinary club. It was only possible as a combination of the right time, the right place, the right content and determined people."
Excerpt of liner notes, by Rob Sharp - November 2016.

Deluxe LP w 180g, Reverse Board Sleeve, MP3 Download - HOLOVR is Jimmy Billingham who also records under the alias's Tidal, Venn Rain, Journey of Mind & Holographic Mind - He has released music on Firecracker Records, Opal Tapes and Hooker Vision as well as his own Indole Records Release Information Anterior Space may strike some listeners of a certain age as an echo of the gilded age of "armchair techno" exemplified by Warp Records' Artificial Intelligence comps. There's a similar convergence of the cerebral and the blissful in the four epic compositions HOLOVR (aka Jimmy Billingham) finesses from his analog and digital synths as that found on those early-'90s pieces by Black Dog, B12, and others. Discussing the creation of Anterior Space, which is the first HOLOVR release to feature no beats, Billingham reveals, "Dropping drums gave me a bit more freedom in terms of tempo and rhythm, and it was actually really liberating. Having fewer elements in a track also meant it was possible to record live, which is my preferred way of working, as you can capture an actual snapshot of time and a natural, in-the-moment negotiation of the different elements of a track. I'd know a track was ready if I could sit there and listen to it looping round for long periods of time and really get lost in it, and then I'd try and capture a nice section of that in the space of 10 minutes or whatever." You can hear this on Anterior Space's opening 11-minute track, "Into Light." Its subtle gradations of warped tones and implied rhythms teem with hyperactive elegance. The titular light glints off of several jeweled facets, like a disco ball made out of diamonds. The slow, mobile-like rotation of synth baubles over a foundation of yearning, icy drones on "Apparent Motion" creates the illusion of a shimmering stasis, but there's actually a great deal happening here. .

Mika Vainio - Mannerlaata

Mika Vainio

Mannerlaata

3x12inchIDEAL149LP
Ideal Recordings
02.12.2016

Mannerlaatta (Tectonic Plate) is Mika Vainio's soundtrack for a 74 minute lettrist film made entirely without a camera' by Finnish film maker Mika Taanila, his 3rd following their previous
collaborations, A Physical Ring (2002) and Return of the Atom (2015).
The music was written very early on in the film's two and a half year development, and subsequently held a strong sway over the rhythm of the film's editing and visual narration - which takes place as a series of black and white images made from photocopying various travel documents, which were later photgrammed onto 35mm reversal film in a darkroom, and overlaid with text by poet Harry Salmenniemi. As Vainio tends to use a set-up of homebuilt kit unchanged from his very earliest productions, each new release is effectively a subtle alteration/refinement of his brutalist but tactile process of creation. And, going by that timeline of events, we'd speculate that Mannerlaatta was conceived somewhere in the wake of his staggering Kilo LP and the much sweeter Konstellaatio side as Ø,
which is roughly where its aesthetics also lie.
The 50 minute score breaks down to 6 sections, each exploring the full frequency spectrum of his patented, greyscale tonal palette, largely swerving a fixed rhythmic meter to occupy a weightless, outta reach mid-ground that seduces us headlong into his chasmic designs and, we'd imagine, best suits the black and white film imagery (full disclosure, we haven't seen it yet).
Key to the recording's appeal - as with most Vainio gear - is that peripheral sense of spatial dynamic and his unpredictable manipulation of amplitude, whether dangling us over abyssal
subbass dimensions, needling with icy prongs, or occasionally alleviating the tension with teasing pads which evaporate back into the æther as though they were never there, ultimately leaving us at rapt and at his mercy for the duration.

Joachim Nordwall - The Message Is Very Simple

The message is very simple; think for yourself and question authority', so says Timothy Leary in the looped intro to Joachim Nordwall's follow-up to The Power of Repetition and two volumes of Soul Music for Entr'acte.

The iDEAL ringleader is at his quietest and most contemplative here, firstly offering Leary's looped mantra before opening out into starkly minimal space ambient drone space where we're implicitly encouraged to meditate on that message amid the rustle and hum of vintage oscillators and haptic scuffs.

Some half way into the piece those etheric drones begin to coagulate into a glowing aurora which glacially descends into rumbling lower registers and returning almost like a palindrome to Leary's mantra, which reinforces the piece's effect, and possibly implies a positive point of resolution on the horizon if only you hold your line.

As with pretty much everything Nordwall touches, this one comes highly recommended!

Valerio Tricoli - Clonic Earth

The experimental Italian composer returns to PAN with a new LP, titled 'Clonic Earth'. His ongoing output for the label has long-presented his lectroacoustic sound compositions where since the mid-'00s, he has utilized analogue live sampling and real-time editing of field and studio recordings by means of manipulation of 1/4 inch tape.
The new record, 'Clonic Earth' is a perturbing, compelling and mind-expanding work, marked by compositional strategies of exploded narratives, psychological insight and oracular literary references where questions about the boundaries of spatial perception in the decoding processes of acousmatic music are overturned into existential, metaphysical questions.
The record is described by its author as a natural consequence of the internal collapse depicted in his previous record, 'Miseri Lares': As if all the debris left inside my loudspeakers have been ignited to expand into the ether, to find a justification at the principle of Chaos, or Cosmos alike.
This movement is expressed by references to the theme of fire as original matter in the Chaldean Oracles which, together with the later work of Philip K. Dick, are the main sources for the vocal/text elements of the composition. Fire, intended as the convulsive principle of existence, but also an ontologically terminal element - hence a representation of the infinite decay and a mean of communication with the otherworldly - serves the author a metaphor for the acousmatic listening experience itself: a borderline perception of sounds eternally fixed in their spasmodic disappearance, which could eventually drag us into a different layer of reality, drastically changing, subverting, or expanding the space in which they are diffused.
A ritual, somehow, which may link the listener and the perceptive space that he inhabits with whatever lies beyond the loudspeakers, beyond the vibrating surface of the world.

02.12.2016

POP AMBIENT - our longest-running compilation series after Total - sees a new instalment for 2017, featuring exclusive material from acclaimed genre veterans and series newcomers JENS-UWE BEYER, YUI ONODERA & SCANNER, MAX WÜRDEN, LEANDRO FRESCO, THORE PFEIFFER, KENNETH JAMES GIBSON and SOULSAVERS remixed by WOLFGANG VOIGT.
Following his own cues from preceding entries, Pop Ambient chief curator Voigt again strikes a perfect ratio of established producers and debuting guests: our complete Pop Ambient solo album crew makes an appearance, from JENS-UWE BEYERs atmospheric soundscapes on the tracks FINAL 9.1 and FINAL 10, to THORE PFEIFFERs glitch romance GOOD LIFE, LEANDRO FRESCOs beatific drone fests SONIDO ESPAÑOL and EL ABISMO, as well as KENNETH JAMES GIBSONs melancholic epic HER FLOOD KNOCKED ME TO THE GROUND (BUT I WAS ALREADY THERE. Other returning artists include ANTON KUBIKOV of SCSI-9 fame (with electronic reverie DEKKA) and Cologne soundsmith MAX WÜRDEN, who was last seen releasing wonderfully immersive albums on BineMusic and Wolfgang Voigt's very own Exponate series. His guitar-infused, dubbed-out cut FERNFELD and the mysterious electronic mantra 186.000 MILES PER SECOND are particularly striking renditions of the rich sonic narratives possible in Pop Ambient.
For the 2017 release, we welcome Tokyo-based Pop Ambient novice YUI ONODERA with his tracks CROMO1 and CROMO2, which both serve as opener: a trained musician and architectural acoustic designer by trade, Onodera embeds diverse influences from traditional sound design, film scores, contemporary composition and electro-acoustic experimentation in his work, resulting in intricate drone sculptures and sound skylines. This skill set gels naturally with the sonic sensibilities of iconic experimental composer SCANNER who teams up with Onodera for the cut LOCUS SOLUS - it's an incredible honour to have such a towering figure in advanced electronic music on board. Wolfgang Voigt himself makes an appearance as remixer, turning the track HAL from electronic-rock-gospel duo SOULSAVERS' 2015 album "Kubrick" into a voluptuous and immersive sound journey. It's the cherry on top of a particularly fluffy cake that will prove irresistible to any connoisseur of ambient music.

Repeated Viewing - The Three Sisters Ost

WeMe and Wil-Ru Records team up to bring you a limited edition vinyl release of Repeated Viewing's (Glasgow native Alan Sinclair) first original film music score for Irish director Daire McNab's modern day neo-giallo murder mystery movie: The Three Sisters. Both the film and the soundtrack are inspired by the golden age of Italian horror cinema, the Giallo genre, which has been making a savage comeback in recent years in both music and movie making. Laden with heavy guitars riffs, stabbing synthesizers, oppressive beats and ominous atmospheres, The Three Sisters score maintains a purist aesthetic, remaining true to the sounds of the original horror scores of the 70s and 80s. The results are a fresh, modern take on a classic sound in the spirit of the original horror film scores perfected by musicians such as Goblin, Fabio Frizzi, Libra, Stevio Cipriani, Carlo Maria Cordio and John Carpenter. This ten track LP is limited to 300 copies and features original cover art by Eric Adrian Lee.

Petrels - Flailing Tomb

Petrels

Flailing Tomb

12inchDEN232LP
Denovali Records
17.11.2016

Petrels returns with a thunderous new album, Flailing Tomb. Taking the exhilaratingly huge sonic expanse that Petrels has become known for and pushing it further still, Flailing Tomb draws on a breathtaking sonic palette of influences and instrumentation to craft perhaps the strongest Petrels release to date. Flailing Tomb's underlying theme is a many-layered obsession with - and joyous celebration of - the defiance in persisting with lost causes. Building on the mythological foundations of previous albums - Haeligewielle, Onkalo and Mima - Flailing Tomb takes an underlying current that ran beneath each of these and pushes it to the fore. Flailing Tomb draws inspiration from sources as wide-ranging as Ursula K. Le Guin's speculative fiction, Indian-Celtic connections, self-mummification, Jude The Apostle (patron saint of lost causes), and Jean-Luc Godard's seminal sci-fi masterpiece, Alphaville (much of the second-half of the album is adapted from music originally written as an alternate score to the film), weaving all this and more into six intricately-layered parts - at once forthright and ambiguous. With a much broader range of instrumentation and contributors than previous Petrels albums - from the melodic cacophony of album opener We Are Falling Into the Heart Of The Sun, to the euphoric choral backdrop of Orpheus with a lead vocal from NEVER SOL and the epic motorik finale of L. Caution - Flailing Tomb is both an expansion on and refinement of the Petrels sound and an album that confirms the arrival of a singular artist. Petrels is the solo project of London-based musician and illustrator, Oliver Barrett. Since releasing his debut Haeligewielle in 2011, Petrels has toured across Europe and shared a stage with the likes of Tim Hecker, FIRE!, Nate Young (Wolf Eyes), Trouble Books, Demdike Stare, Nadja, and Hans-Joachim Roedelius (Cluster). Having also collaborated with and provided remixes for artists as varied as Duane Pitre, Brassica, Talvihorros and Max Cooper, Petrels' output is proving to be thrillingly eclectic and unpredictable. Vinyl: thick sleeves, thick printed inners, different vinyl colors, 180g vinyl, free download code. CD digipak.

For fans Of: - Stone Throw records - Analog experimental sample based music - Psychedelic rock - Afro Ancestral "I may have no possessions, but here lies everything one needs" This is Alexandre Francisco Diaphra's motto as governor of his own life. A multifaceted artist from Guinea-Bissau, based in Lisbon: rapper, poet, edutainer & beatmaker, creating music based on improvisation in which he blends his psychedelic, black music, afro ancestral influences and love for the non-quantized beats in the same way as with experimental jazz, mixed contemporary and urban styles. Last year Diaphra wons the 3rd place at the 1st International Poetry Slam in Rio de Janeiro (Flupp). In 2012 Diaphra featured & toured Europe as MC/performer for Angolan/Portuguese project Batida's eponymous debut album (Soundway),"a record that could change the african electronic music on the 21st century" (Songlines) - their live show was also "one of the best 10 acts from Womex" (NPR Radio). Diaphra's Blackbook Of The Beats is following the idea of building instrumental bases on the outside environment wherever Diaphra feels inspired. A backpack, some vinyl records, a portable turntable and a sampler for self deconstruction / recreation from which resulted this (mainly) instrumental album and which is documented in form of musical videos in the dvd. The particulary of this project resides in the non-quantized beats over which the enlightening poetry is spoken, rapped and chanted in portuguese, where trial and error take part of the compositions which are enhanced with the use of instruments played by invited musicians and sometimes by Diaphra himself. Add to this various carefully handcrafted editions " including a silkscreened reproduction of the real Diaphra's Black Book Of The Beats " and you get the kind of artifact we love to bump into. Available as CD also.

Tape Loop Orchestra - The Invisibles

On this new album from the Tape Loop Orchestra, Andrew Hargreaves producers his most substantial and absorbing full-length to date, accompanied by the vocals of Beth Roberts. Inspired by skools of parapsychology and 20th century avant garde art to broach one of the big, esoteric questions, 'is death the end and are those who passed to other side trying to make contact with us, their journey gradually builds to create huge emotive impact.
With the highly sought after predecessor, Go Straight To The Light Of All That You Love still glowing in the rearview, Tape Loop Orchestra this time opt to conure a widescreen perspective squared between the parapsychological studies of EVP, the cosmic noise noumena of Sun Ra; a mysterious book entitled The Invisibles, by an anonymous author; and the work of Dutch conceptual artist Bas Jan Ader, whose final,
incomplete work involved a failed, solo transatlantic crossing in a small boat, which was found, without its captain, 150 miles from the Irish coast.
Taking that all on board, The Invisibles forms a study of what lies beyond. Using a sublime production palette to gradually bloom a vast sound intended to dilate the listener's consciousness; conflating notions of high and low brow art to open a space for intuitive reception and perception. Their expansive multi-tracked
production methods enable a broader, non-linear arrangement of familiar base elements, allowing them to keen away with an amorphous agenda that has long underlined Tape Loop Orchestra's music through themes of decay and renewal, yet always previously circumscribed by their relatively rudimentary process.
Across both parts of the extended, singular piece, TLO's exhaled strings and voices now ebb and swell with a more organic, melted meter and texture and unfathomable depth of field, creating exactly the sort of conditions required to ponder matters of such enduring artistic importance.

Units and Measurements is the collaborative project of Christopher Hreno, Mathew Jonson and Colin de la Plante. The project sees these long times friends and veteran producers exploring the limits of hardware based improvisation and deep synthesis and effects programing . Documenting a single epic 24 hour session at Jonson's mothership studio in Berlin, this first release sees the trio exploring some of the headiest ambient and tunneling hypnotic techno to be found in any of their admittedly vast individual back catalogs. This release is without question a portrait of 3 masters of their craft at work, and quite unlike anything else you are likely to hear this year.

Units and Measurements will be available in a double vinyl and digital formats on November 4th via BLKRTZ, with worldwide distribution via Kompakt.

Jonathan Fitoussi - Imaginary Line

"The stars we are given. The constellations we make. That is to say, stars exist in the cosmos, but constellations are the imaginary lines we draw between them, the readings we give the sky, the stories we tell." Rebecca Solnit The above quote by the American author Solnit inspired Parisian producer Jonathan Fitoussi's debut album for Further Records, Imaginary Lines. He used those words and the concept of Harmony Of The Spheres to create the six ravishing interstellar evocations on Imaginary Lines, to spin his own intriguing yarns about the cosmos. While conjuring the vastness of space, Fitoussi imbues the journey with profound feelings of awe and beauty. "This idea that the constellations are an imaginary representation that man drew in the sky to serve as landmarks in space and on Earth is greatly appealing to me, and works very well with the story behind this album, on which each song title bears the name of a constellation," Fitoussi says. "With Imaginary Lines, I wanted to work with this idea as its core; on one hand geometrical and linear, like the shape of the constellations, characterized by the use of repetitive sequences, and on the other hand, through sections of improvised organ to evoke the more spiritual dimension, and l'invitation au voyage." Imaginary Lines sounds like it was made with acute academic rigor yet it is also lavishly beautiful and sensuous. "I like having a mixture of a solid base to work from," Fito

Sela. - Homemade Jams From Jules & Jessica's Kitchen

"homemade jams from jules & jessicaís kitchen" is the follow-up vinyl release after SELA.'s critically acclaimed debut from 2015, "first". The Californian producer refined his take on leftfield R&B and footwork, trailing even deeper into ultra-minimal loops and found sound. There is an un-good atmosphere to most of his tracks, mostly due to the haunting chords and syrupy, loose programing. At the same time, the warm sound and hefty low-end clearly set apart SELA.sí production from lo-fi gimmickery. Fans of Angelo Badalamenti, Shlohmo, or BONES should give this one a try.

The sound to be found in nature can have a very slow groove. A groove embedded by silence, so slow it can almost only be felt while spending a few hours in the nature at sea, during a forest trip, in open fields, etc. It is this groove and the 'silence' of nature that was an inspiration for the Fieldtone compositions. The music is performed by an ensemble of string instruments (Kankles, Acoustic guitar, Electric Guitar, Double Bass) supplemented with drums

Barnaby Carter - While It Still Blooms - 2x12"

It is a fundamental part of life that in order for something new to emerge, something old has to pass and give up it's space and resources. This circulation between life and death is the source of everything beautiful. It is omnipresent in the whole of nature and all cycles of reproduction we know.

"Life is finite yet cyclical. It's beautiful. I am inspired by nature, and of the growth within it, albeit temporary. But for me, as I said before, the finiteness of life is part of it's beauty. So enjoy the moment." - Barnaby Carter

The positive melancholy of 'While It Still Blooms' is his testament to acceptance, creativity and simplicity.

'While It Still Blooms' comes out worldwide on limited splattered vinyl (including download code).
