Peer through the windows of the sun-dappled homes in Sicily and you will be faced with a small, strange ceramic object adorning each hallway. It is a glistening pine cone standing upright – a pigna – the longstanding symbol of Sicilian openness and welcome hospitality.

The pigna is a delightfully unusual and yet apt symbol for the title of the third record from Benjamin Harris, AKA Yarni. Ever since his debut LP release in 2017, Yarni has established a following committed to his musical openness, an intuitive curiosity that has spanned everything from house and techno to cinematic ambience and Japanese percussion, as well as jazz horns and afrobeat fanfares. For Yarni, anything goes and everyone is welcome. Now, Pigna sees Yarni reach his fullest and most musically diverse expression, taking its name and ethos from Sicily, but finding a sonic home in the luscious orchestration of a new ensemble of musicians.

Here, at the helm of a nine-person ensemble, Yarni artfully pieces together live improvisations to create the warmth of a seasoned group performing deep within the groove. Opener “Midnight Getaway” places the listener squarely within the disco-funk of Daft Punk as Yarni’s top-line synth intersects with a rolling bassline and a lyrical flute solo from Rachel Shirley. This optimistic tone of sunlit spaciousness is then heightened on “Utopia”, as Yarni’s horn section comes to the fore to pay homage to the ineffable syncopations of Fela Kuti’s pioneering afrobeat.

Rather than scratch at the surface of these musical genres, Yarni’s attuned ear embodies the emotive essence of his various sounds by paying intimate attention to their creation. There is the punch of that afrobeat sax on “Utopia”; the rhythmic skitter of breakbeats on “The Astral”; the sludging thump of funk in the bassline on “Nova”. Collaborators are given free reign, too, to incorporate their own unique stylings into this remarkable whole, from vocalist Emily Marks’ languid tone on “In A Dream”, to saxophonist Jonoa’s innate swing on “Cherub”, and the metronomic movement of bassist Ally McMahon’s playing throughout.

Auf seinem mutigen Album aus dem Jahr 1970 war Frank Sinatra einmal nicht mit Swing oder Balladen aus dem American Songbook zu hören. French vocalist, beatboxer, songwriter and producer Sly Johnson unveils 55.4, his much- anticipated fourth studio album, released on BBE Music. Hailing from Paris, Sylvère Johnson (Sly Johnson) is a major force on the French Hip-Hop, Soul and Jazz scenes, both as a solo artist and as a member of super-group SAIAN SUPA CREW for over a decade, where he was known by the moniker Sly The Mic Buddah. When the crew broke up in 2007, Johnson began to carve out an impressive career, releasing on Blue Note and Universal Jazz, as well as collaborating with Larry Gold, Roddy Rod, T3 & Elzhi from Slum Village, Georgia Ann Muldrow, Dudley Perkins, FINALE, Erik Truffaz, and legendary French rapper Oxmo Puccino among many others. Written and recorded during the first COVID lockdowns between March and May 2020, Sly Johnson’s fourth album blends Soul and Hip-Hop, twinning vocal arrangements reminiscent of Prince and D’Angelo with loose, supple, beats and jazzy chords. Most of the musical heavy lifting is done by Johnson himself, but the album features bass by Laurent Salzard, guitar by Ralph Lavital and Anthony Jambon, keys by Nicholas Vella & Laurent Coulondre and a spellbinding guest vocal by Jona Oak. Why 55.4? “It took 55 days of creation to make the songs of this 4th solo album” says Sly.

The ‘3000 Volts of Holt’ album was the third in a series of records that launched John Holt into the UK charts in the 1970’s. To say that every home had a copy of a 1000 Volts and many 2000 Volts of Holt might be an overstatement but it certainly felt that way, as all good radio stations and parties seemed to have these tracks on permanent rotation.’3000 Volts of Holt’ was the more roots sounding of the three albums but still carried that sweetened string sound that set these recordings together.

specific performance for the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion in
Barcelona, plus sound installations for CTM Festival and
Medellín’s Museum of Modern Art. Often seeking inspiration
in the worlds of fiction, poetry, geology and desire,
excavating nuanced references to untangle and respond to
in her music, Dalt’s debut score is incredible stand-alone
piece of work.

Heather (Sophie Vavasseur / Resident Evil: Apocalypse) and
Charlotte (Chelsea Edge / I Hate Suzie) travel to the Mojave
Desert for some time away, with the upcoming meteor
shower as the perfect social media backdrop. But what starts
out as a girls’ getaway descends into a battle for survival with
the arrival of an invasive alien force whose air of mystery

Abbey Lincoln's distinctive vocal style, thought-provoking writing, and spirited personality has secured her a place among the jazz greats. Though she made her first recording for Riverside, and later in life for Verve, it was with the young and audacious Candid Records that she made her biggest musical statement, 1961's Straight Ahead. Straight Ahead is one of Abbey Lincoln's greatest and most important recordings. Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald's paths had surely crossed many times during the Thirties, Forties, and early Fifties. However, no recorded trace of the two legendary musicians collaborating existed until 1957, when they participated on a series of big band sessions for Norman Granz. The sessions were somewhat chaotic and intermittent though, primarily because of Ellington's busy schedule and lack of time to prepare arrangements. As a result, the big band sessions were
padded out it with various all-star sextettes, as represented on the LP.

The Jamaican reggae and dub musician Linval Thompson's career began around the age of 20. He has done much work to shape the reggae music during the last centuries. He collaborated with many of the greats of Jamaican music recording. I Love Marijuana was his first self-produced LP in 1978 and featuring some of his well-known tracks, like the title song, the funky 'Dread are the Controller' and 'Just Another Girl.' One of the nation's best bands, The Revolutionaries, is backing him up. It's one of the finest recordings by Linval, before he moved on to become a prominent record producer.

The Effect Of Heavy Music: Rock Music And Revolution In 70s Zimbabwe. Eye Q’s music has never been collated and issued outside of its country of origin. Now, as part of the Now-Again Reserve series, their rare singles and even rarer album are presented in full. Just as the hippie era came to an end in America, a second 60s was beginning: in what is now Zimbabwe, young people created a rock and roll counterculture that drew inspiration from hippie ideals and the sounds of Hendrix and Deep Purple. The kids in the scene called their music “heavy,” because they could feel its impact, and it resonated from Zambia to Nigeria. At its peak in the mid-70s, the heavy rock scene united tens of thousands of young progressives of all racial and social backgrounds. The country was called Rhodesia then, one of the last bastions of White rule in Africa, and heavy rockers defied segregation laws and secret police to make a stand for democratic change. Eye Q is one of the greatest bands of the scene: their rock stands on par with the early Zamrock of WITCH and Ngozi Family. Please The Nation encapsulated Eye Q’s desire to forge forth, in a new, free country, and this set collates their 7” singles, ultra-rare album and songs from master tape and presents their music for the first time outside of Zimbabwe. In the accompanying oversized booklet, a trio of authors collaborate to tell the Eye Q story, and to investigate the genesis of the heavy rock scene under Ian Smith’s racist, oppressive government, and its dissipation after Zimbabwe’s liberation. The set also includes a download card for WAV files for all vinyl tracks, as well as bonus tracks.

By far the most unexpected hit record of 2011 was the 29th and final studio album from an 89 year-old Doris Day. My Heart hit the charts in the U.S. and went all the way up to #9 in the U.K., triumphantly capping a legendary singing and acting career. But this record and its chart success was, if you’ll excuse the pun, no mere sentimental journey. The heart of My Heart is a series of songs recorded by Doris in the mid-‘80s as background for scenes featuring her with various animals on the Doris Day’s Best Friends television show, many of
them written by her son, Terry Melcher, whose production credits, of course, include The Byrds and Beach Boys. Melcher also lends a bravura vocal turn to “Happy Endings” and is the subject of a heartfelt preamble by Doris on “My Buddy.” And without question Terry’s influence lay behind her superb, jaunty cover of the Lovin’ Spoonful’s “Daydream.” In short, My Heart was a touching, tuneful love letter from Doris to her deceased son; and now, in honor of her centennial, we’re bringing it to LP for the first time, remastered for vinyl by Mike
MIlchner at Sonic Vision, and pressed in green vinyl complete with an insert featuring liner notes. A beautiful record from a beautiful lady.

When in January, 1970 Count Basie entered the studio with his 17-piece big band
to record 'High Voltage', he ushered in the last full decade as bandleader of his
Orchestra. The Orchestra had left its imprint on the sixties by recording with the
likes of Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. There would be more great albums with
star vocalists in the seventies, but the band's purely instrumental works, which
had begun in 1965, would also continue. Back then Basie had engaged acclaimed
Cuban composer/arranger Chico O'Farrill to arrange the music for such concept
albums as "Basie Meets Bond" and "Basie's Beatle Bag", transforming them into
crossover gems.
On 'High Voltage' O'Farrill demonstrates his affinity to Basie's big band sound, this
time with a repertoire of standards. For this album, Basie specifically chose
pieces the band had never recorded in their more than 30-year existence. This is
saying something, since the band covers such an impressive span of jazz history,
from the beginning of the swing era to the bop-influenced bands of the 50's on
through to the present album.
The Count's new drummer Harold Jones propels Fred Fisher's "Chicago" with a
tremendous drive. The Rogers and Hart classic "Have You Met Miss Jones"
features beguilingly dense deep- register horn lines and an almost languorous
piano, and Eric Dixon's tasty flute solo spices up "The Lady Is A Tramp". With its
smoky sophistication, Eddie Lockjaw Davis' Tenor dominates "Bewitched",
whereas guest trumpeter Joe Newman's muted tongue-in-cheek solo highlights
"Day In Day Out". Of course, Basie himself also steps forward: for instance, on the
Fats Waller-like intro to "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You", and with the playful
grace notes on "If I Were A Bell"." Reminiscent of the Las Vegas shows the band
performed with Frank Sinatra, "Get Me To The Church On Time" is also a
masterful dialogue between the horn sections.
