2024 coloured (violet) vinyl repress for this year's Sonic Cathedral's 20th anniversary! Hull/Leeds based five-piece bdrmm release their much anticipated debut Bedroom on July 3, via Sonic Cathedral. The 10-track album was recorded late last year at The Nave studio in Leeds by Alex Greaves (Working Mens Club, Bo Ningen) and mastered in Brooklyn by Heba Kadry (Slowdive, Beach House). It's a hugely accomplished debut and a real step up both sonically and lyrically from their early singles, which were rounded up on last year's If Not, When? EP. Musically, there are nods to The Cure's Disintegration, Deerhunter and DIIV, while the band reference RIDE and Radiohead. There are also echoes of krautrock and post-punk, from The Chameleons to Protomartyr, plus the proto shoegaze of the Pale Saints' The Comforts Of Madness, not least in the cross fading of some tracks, meaning the album is an almost seamless listen. As a result, Bedroom becomes an unexpected and unintentional concept album, running through the different stages of a break-up set against the backdrop of the ups and downs of your early twenties. "The subject matter spans mental health, alcohol abuse, unplanned pregnancy, drugs_ basically every cliché topic that you could think of," reveals frontman Ryan Smith. "But that doesn't mean they ever stop being relevant. It's a fucker growing up, but I'm lucky enough to have been able to project my feelings in the form of this band, surrounded by four of the best people I've ever met." And that band name, in case it needs explaining, is pronounced the same way as the album title. "I never thought I'd get to the stage where I would have to explain it so much," says Ryan. "We have been pronounced as Boredom, Bdum and my old boss thought we were a ska band called Bad Riddim. We're all sarcastic cunts, so Bedroom spelt correctly seemed like the perfect title." Quinnisa Kinsella-Mulkerin recorded her first song at five years old with her parents, who comprise the adventurous Maine band, Big Blood. Ever since the age of five, she was writing songs, banging on chimes, strumming guitars, and clanging together whatever else she could find. Improvisation was natural, and she stuck to the approach. Quinn brings this innate sense of songwriting to The Wickies, a duo she formed with Aiden Arel a year ago at age 16, whose chill approach and fluid delivery belie true inventiveness in the underneath mechanics. Inspired by seventies folk icons like Stevie Nicks, Krautrock bands like Can, and modern indie-rockers like Alex G, The Wickies feel like an amalgamation of these decade-spanning sounds, but uniquely their own. Quinn’s voice croons like a seventies folk star, but it possesses a great and controlled tone. Her vocals feel like another instrument within the mix, building and growing each song to its fullest sound, leaving no detail within the mix unheard. Their use of echoing guitar lines recalls sixties psych, a springboard for their unique take. Quinn’s lush, free-flowing lyrics, created on the spot, complement Aiden's fleshed out backing instrumentation and over-dubbing. Quickly, the pair created more material than they ever needed, allowing them to mold their recordings into a self-titled debut album. Like a painter crafting the perfect exhibition of their finest work, Aiden and Quinn condensed their improvisations to all the best parts. Tracks like “Campfire Song” and “Skipping Pond,” exemplify the ethereal and lackadaisical atmosphere of their sound. “I keep finding these weird, obscure bands from the seventies that have one album and nothing else, which is awesome,” Quinn said, “I want my music to sound like somebody found it in a record store that no one has ever heard of and uploaded it to YouTube. I want it to sound a little strange.”

Trust Masked Replicants finds AMT in fine form, creating experimental psych-rock improvised around skeletal compositions. The group's leader, Kawabata Makoto, holds the group together while they navigate chaos infused, drone based jamming at the outer edges of human consciousness.

Side B, featuring the 20 minute track Asoko Ananda, is a classic side-long fast paced AMT burner combining sped up kosmische rhythms, filter sweeps, free-jazz piano, tabla drumming and vocal experiments. Asoko Ananda utilizes many of the group's skills, ascending to the height of their collective, mountainous ability.

Channeling prog, krautrock, modern composition and noise, Kawabata Makoto formed the Acid Mothers Temple in the early 90's. The group has gone on to release countless albums while touring the globe.

Xylitol is the alias of Catherine Backhouse, producer and DJ under the name DJ Bunnyhausen. She was a resident DJ at Kosmische, the now dormant Krautrock club and is a fan of jungle and hardcore. She currently co-hosts the radio show Slav To The Rhythm, which focuses on vintage central and eastern European pop and electronica and she's also co-writing a book on Yugoslavian pop culture. 'Anemones' is a total project from the cover to the music. Backhouse is fascinated by early botanical illustrations of anemones and other aquatic fauna, and how the act of taxonomy reveals as much about human psychology, desire and sublimation as it does about the organic specimen as a thing in itself. Each track is a microcosm of this 'other life', an allegory for the extraordinary potential latent within bodies that the dancefloor has the power to activate. Using early jungle and garage as starting points to connect dots and open up contrasts between dance music and vintage electronics, Backhouse finds a sweet spot which, in her words "feels like something that's simultaneously still and ancient yet propulsive and ecstatic." Not afraid of letting the the hiss and flutter of the music show, 'Anemones' holds attention with ancient bubbling synths and gracefully drifting arpeggiations, occasionally brought to heel by charming melodies, all accompanied by breakbeats that explode like fireworks. 'Anemones' has a lively and unpolished aesthetic that's a kindred spirit to Nondi_'s 2023 album of smeary, water-damaged footwork, 'Flood City Trax'. 'Moebius' pits the spaced out neon chords of the track's namesake against absolutely tearing breaks, allowing time for this almost overwhelming combination to become near enough transcendental, while the bleeping melody and sad slavic chorus motif in 'Okko' feels like an artifact from an alternative future. The Drexciya meets 2-step garage of 'Dobro Jutro' creates a welcome respite at the album's midpoint before the flow builds up again to 'Daša' with its glassy sounds from a lost radiophonic workshop miniature meeting bruising kicks and snares. Meanwhile 'Iskria' has purring synth chords and 8-bit melodies evoking the cosmonaut age. The subliminal influence of the Yugo era is felt in DIY synthesis and Mitteleuropean melody and seen in song titles such as 'Jelena', 'Miha', 'Daša' (named after novelist Daša Drndič) and 'Iskria' (taken from the fictitious Balkan region in Ottessa Moshfegh's bleak fable 'Lapvona'). 'Anemones' very effectively folds experimental genres from different times and places into a very enjoyable new sound.

Housepainters is a dynamic post-punk and no-wave ensemble. The band's inspiration is a fusion of krautrock, wave-punk, and dub. Their debut LP is based on dystopian films like 1984 and Basic Instinct. Big tip for fans of Saada Bonaire, ESG & Liquid Liquid. Most essential 2024 Post-punk, disco-no-disco release.

Over the years Faust has become many things, each as separate as the fingers, but as together as the hand which makes up their eponymous fist. From 1971 to 1974 the Hamburg band blazed a bold sonic trail, helping to create the distinct and delirious strand of German music we"ve come to know as Krautrock. Uncompromising, innovative and experimental, their releases in that period, and the stories accompanying their creation, are nothing short of legendary, and the fact that after a hiatus, the band returned and remained active in a variety of separate and simultaneous incarnations is entirely fitting for these musical revolutionaries. On Blickwinkel, Diermaier"s incarnation embrace synchronicity and chance in order to capture the moment in a six track snapshot of industrial churn, unsettling ambience and psychedelic motorik.

Saint Julian had established Julian Cope as something of an establishment anti-hero and audiences, who'd been reacquainted with him were expecting more of the same. Instead, Cope changed his band line-up and attempted to mix funk and Krautrock on his new material; Chris Blackwell paired him with veteran US producer Ron Fair. The album produced three singles including "Charlotte Anne" which was a minor hit in the US. Album opener, "5 O'Clock World", a cover of a 1965 Vogues song, is light and poppy and the seven-minute title track, complete with strings and a harmonica solo, is one of the greatest (and perhaps only) attempts to merge go-go beats with post punk. There is a great deal to enjoy on My Nation Underground, underlining as it does Julian Cope's desire to continually push the envelope. My Nation Underground is an album ripe for rediscovery - This re-issue faithfully replicates the original 1988 Mercury Records UK release and is pressed onto high quality 180g vinyl.

ARIA Award-nominated composer and electronic artist Lance Gurisik announces his forthcoming album, ‘Proffer’. Set to be released on his Sydney-based label, 33 Sides, with global distribution through Inertia / PIAS, ‘Proffer’ promises to be a groundbreaking exploration of experimental electronic, jazz and modern classical forms.
 ‘Proffer’ is a psychedelic fusion record that blends eclectic musical influences. It draws inspiration from German Krautrock hero Manuel Göttsching, French synth legends Air, minimalist composer Terry Riley, and classical composers Ralph Vaughan Williams and Alexander Scriabin. The album is a maximalist exploration of experimental electronic, jazz, and modern classical forms.
 The album features collaborations with Lamorna Nightingale from Australia’s premier Ensemble Offspring on alto and bass flute, Nick Meredith on drums and percussion, a 16-piece string section performed by Ian Cooper on violins and violas, Paul Ghica on Viola da Gamba and cellos, and Lance himself on modular synth and keyboards.
 ‘Proffer’ challenges the prevailing norms in the music industry, advocating for music as a vehicle of escapism and self-exploration through active listening. The single features a collaboration between Studio Kosmische from UK and Cloud Canyons from Italy. Side A is a rework by Studio Kosmische of “Under Neon Stars”, a track from Cloud Canyon’s 2023 debut album “Dreaming Of Horses Running In Circles”: by adding a few parts and alchemically blending the original elements of the song - the relentless motorik pulse, the ethereal female vocals, the multilayers of monophonic analogue synths - Studio Kosmische’s version moulds a shrouding and lilting veil on the 9-minutes long original track. Side B features a brand new track, “Black Fruit”, also sprung from the creative dialogue between the two bands and clocking at about 9 minutes side-long. Born as an instrumental piece by Studio Kosmische, “Black Fruit” developed in a full song thanks to the vocal additions by Michelle Cristofori, Laura Storchi and Stella Baraldi (Cloud Canyons’ singers) and a rich yet minimalistic array of instrumental parts by Studio Kosmische’s Dom Keen, who ingeniously shaped the keys harmonies and rhythmic textures around the vocal lines. Accomplished by some subtle electronics treatment by Cloud Canyons’ Nicola Caleffi, “Black Fruit” ideally complements “Under Neon Stars” as a two-sided creature, hanging somewhere between krautrock and electronica.

Heiko Maile und Julian Demarre, vertraut mit dem Schreiben von Popsongs und Filmmusik, arbeiten seit dem Album-Klassiker "MEANWHILE" von Camouflage Mitte der 90er Jahre zusammen. Seit die beiden begannen, auch gemeinsam an Spielfilmen zu arbeiten, wuchs in ihnen stetig das Bedürfnis, eine Liebeserklärung an die elektronische Musik der 70er und 80er Jahre zu schreiben. Mit manch esoterischen japanischen Keyboards aus den 70er Jahren, die für den Klang von morgen entwickelt wurden, entstand so ein Werk für alle Tage danach - das genreübergreifende Album NEOSTALGIA, eine einzigartige und facettenreiche Mischung elektronischer Stile, verbunden mit einer Prise Krautrock. The band has had a difficult birth. They got together, did two shows (one with Gruff Rhys), then pandemic struck, leaving them far apart. They got back together, then Fred broke his back in an accident. When they finally reconvened, they recorded, then their other musical projects took over (eg Jon Spencer & The Hitmakers, The Third Sound). The album and live plans were then delayed by more broken limbs. Now fully healed they are poised to heal you back in gratitude, at their soon to be announced in-person performances.

At once a spiritually-charged journey and a shit-kicking party record, American Cream Band comes to Quindi covering all the bases.
American Cream Band was formed by Twin-Cities musician Nathan Nelson around 10 years ago, taking the form of improvised live shows and albums Frankensteined from these sessions into exultant, fully-formed records you can sink your teeth into. The trick with improvised music is to start with intentions, however abstract they might be, and Nelson leads his rolling cast of collaborators into the creative fray with subtle guidance which drives the impulsive musical moment forward.
The band's previous records have manifested on labels like Moon Glyph and Medium Sound, and now Presents arrives in a freewheeling flash of snappy new wave, skronky sax, call and response sass and some krautrock-minded sonic cosmology. The album came together in December 2021, when Nelson took ten musicians to legendary studio Pachyderm in Cannon Falls, Minnesota. Living together, eating together, and with Nelson quietly setting up his low-key magick intentions around Jupiter's planetary frequency and the studio's abundance of elephant statues and carpets, they laid down some drum-heavy sessions that became the building blocks of the record.
'Taste What We Taste' is the perfect example of an exuberant groove pounded on skins as a vessel for a joyous get-down, with the singers and players free to freak out on top. Nelson remains at the centre of the melee, throwing half-sardonic, half-heartfelt calls out for connection. 'Banana' celebrates nonsense and holds down the most serious of beats - a disco-not-disco deadeye dripping in late night sleaze and lysergic potential. On 'Royal Tears', the jagged guitar chops call back to Gang Of Four, while the hot n' heavy sax from Cole Pulice baits James Chance and all the other angular New York un-jazz misfits.
Amongst his other implied intentions for the recordings, Nelson wanted to channel opposites, not least the distinct male-female energies in his vocal sparring with the girls on assistance duties. It wouldn't be right to call them backing singers as they shoot back at his punchy mantras, bringing a certain fierce femininity that tips its hat to The B-52's Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson, not to mention iconic post-punk bands like Au Pairs, Delta 5 and Bush Tetras.
There's space for the dreamier kosmische which has crept into the American Cream oeuvre in the past, as 'Sirens' opens the album up in a swirling pond of rag tag percussion and molten synths. 'Words Would Handcuff Us' cools the whole riotous assembly down in unmoored perfection, a strung-out Bossa nova seance dusted with celestial drips from analogue spaceships.
Equally treading the line between light and dark, conscious and unconscious, the sacred and profane, Presents is a life-affirming, creep-under-the-skin listening experience - a joyously transient chapter in the evolution of American Cream Band.

"Rocksession" ist ein weiteres Embryo-Album mit Material, das während der Sessions zwischen 1971 und 1972 aufgenommen wurde. Eigentlich wollte die Band diese Songs schon 1972 veröffentlichen. Aber Embryos damaliges Label United Artists war nicht so begeistert, also nahmen sie zuerst "Father, Son & Holy Ghosts" auf, um die Songs aus den vorherigen Sessions dann für "Rocksessions" sowie "Steig aus" zu verwenden. Die Besetzung (Dave King (b), Christian Burchard (dr), Jimmy Jackson (organ), Mal Waldron (e-piano) auf diesen beiden Alben ist fast identisch, mit dem Unterschied, dass Sigi Schwab von Roman Bunka bei "Steig Aus" an der Gitarre ersetzt wurde. "Rocksessions" war das erste Embryo-Album auf Brain, ein sehr vielseitiges Werk, das tief im typischen Jazzrock der Krautrock-Ära verwurzelt ist.

Als Kinder der Flower Power Generation haben Vibravoid von der ersten Welle des Psychedelic und Kraut Rock gelernt, denn was heute als "Psych- und Krautrock" vermarktet wird,gab es damals noch nicht und musste von Bands wie Vibravoid erfunden werden. delving ist ein Studioprojekt des Multiinstrumentalisten Nicholas DiSalvo, der vor allem als Frontmann der Heavy-Psych-Rock-Band Elder bekannt ist. 'All Paths Diverge' folgt auf das 2021 erschienene Debütalbum 'Hirschbrunnen' und setzt DiSalvos unvorhergesehenen Weg als einer der einzigartigsten Songwriter des Psychedelic-Rock-Genres fort. Nach anderthalb Jahrzehnten als Frontmann des bahnbrechenden progressiven Psychedelic-Quartetts Elder gründete DiSalvo delving als zweites Ventil, um musikalische Ideen auszudrücken, die nicht in das Paradigma seiner Hauptband passten. Später rief er noch die Projekte Weite und Eldovar (mit Kadavar) ins Leben. Delving erforscht Instrumentalmusik mit einem starken Fokus auf Psychedelic Rock, Krautrock, frühe elektronische Musik sowie Ambient-Sounds, und zeigt dennoch immer die eindrucksvollen Melodien und das einzigartige Songwriting, die seine Markenzeichen sind.

I was sent an unfinished version of Dose Your Dreams so that I might contribute string parts. I couldn’t stop listening to the rough mixes I received. A friend asked me how the record was. I replied, “My God, Fucked Up have made their Screamadelica.” And psych-rock-groove it is. The drums mixed wide, propensity for drones, for delay pedal, for repetition, groove. The politics and aesthetics of hardcore married to an “open format” approach to genre. Elements of doo-wop, krautrock, groove, digital hardcore. “None of Your Business Man” opens the album in familiar enough territory, a sax assisted exit from an office space. But things get psychedelic very quickly. By the time the title track arrives, Mike Haliechuk is whispering, wah pedals are in full effect, and we’re wearing oversized t-shirts and pinwheeling. “Accelerate,” the lyrical centrepiece of the album, storms in like Boredoms on a bullet train and dissolves into a digital nightmare. The album closer, “Joy Stops Time,” finds Fucked Up at their most Düsseldorfian, nearly eight minutes of blissful motorik. At the center of it all is Damian Abraham’s scream a man chained, a man tortured, a true protagonist. The effect is one of an epic, every chapter attempting its own narrative devices, its own genre hybridization and it works, it works so insanely well. The drama unfolds like a miniature world of many parts being explored, a map being illuminated, location by location. As with David Comes to Life, there is a story here. David who once came to life is now indentured to a desk job. David meets the elderly Joyce who closes his eyes, opens his mind, and sends him on a spiritual journey. David embarks on his own metaphysical odyssey. He sees a stage adaptation of his own life. He speaks to an angel in a lightbulb. He sees an infinite series of universes as simulations within simulations. Meanwhile, Lloyd Joyce’s lover was sent, decades ago, by Joyce on the same odyssey, but was lost in the void. Lloyd seeks to be found and reunited with his lover. Where will David end up? Will Joyce and Lloyd be reunited? Dose Your Dreams meaning: treat your dreams as you would a dream, allow yourself to be lost within them, allow them to open your heart and your mind, enjoy them as you would a drug. Formed in Manchester over a decade ago, Hurts are an electronic pop band featuring vocalist Theo Hutchcraft and multi instrumentalist and producer Adam Anderson. Known for their striking and stylish videos, Hurts make epic, dramatic pop music that takes inspiration from a finely curated mix of influences including '70s Krautrock, '80s new wave, and '90s R&B. In August of 2010, Hurts' debut full-length album, Happiness, debuted in the Top 5 on the U.K. albums chart making it the fastest-selling debut album by a band in the U.K. that year. Featuring the singles "Better Than Love," "Wonderful Life," and "Stay," among others. The album was a huge success across Europe and Hurts' profile rose exponentially with the album reaching Platinum status 13 times over and 4 times Gold around the world including over 500,000 album sales in Germany alone. Several accolades followed in 2010, including topping the BBC's Sound of 2010 poll, winning a German BAMBI award, and garnering numerous nominations including an MTV Europe Music Award. The epic video for “Lights", directed by Dawn Shadforth gaining the numerous nominations for Video of the Year. Dumbo Tracks kehrt zurück mit seinem zweiten Album "Move With Intention". Seit dem selbstbetitelten Debütalbum in 2022 ist viel passiert; Philipp Janzen (u.a. Von Spar, Urlaub in Polen, Die Sterne) hat groß eingeladen ins Kölner Dumbo-Studio. Dabei entstand eine Sammlung von neun freidrehenden, wandernden Kraut-Dance Grooves, die von Vocals von Portable, Ada, Marker Starling, Rubee Fegan und nothhingspecial begleitet werden. "Move With Intention" ist sowohl elektronisch als auch lebendig, motorisch und pastoral, gefüllt mit Dancefloor-Grooves und Krautrock-Swaggern. In diesem Sinne ist die Absicht klar: das Regelwerk respektvoll zu zerreißen und sich weiterzuentwickeln.

The synths are also part of the adventure, completing the already rich sonic spectrum and propelling the band into new territories. 

Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. oder einfach nur Acid Mothers Temple sind eine japanische Psychedelic-Rock-Band, deren Kern 1995 gegründet wurde. Noch immer mit dem Original-Artwork von Carl Glover kommt nun die lang erwartete Neuauflage in transparentem lila Vinyl (500 Exemplare weltweit). Paralyzed Brain wurde ursprünglich für den Verkauf auf der Europatournee des Künstlers 'The Electric Dream Ecstasy Tour 2018' produziert und war in Italien nur auf CD erhältlich. Dieses sind die ersten Pressungen überhaupt auf Vinyl. Nicht so wild wie einige andere AMT-Alben, bietet es eine leicht alternative Sichtauf die einzigartigen und talentierten musikalischen Fähigkeiten dieses legendären japanischen Outfits. When Man Man released its last album, "Dream Hunting in the Valley of the In Between," frontman Honus Honus (née Ryan Kattner) was in a state of unrest, oscillating between hope and cynicism. Perhaps fittingly, the album dropped during the pandemic, a time at which we could all relate. But, much like that bizarre turn of events, the ennui now seems so distant to Man Man. A revived sense of purpose washes through Man Man's new album, Carrot on Strings, radiating a mix of calm and confidence. Kattner always embodied a wild-man pied-piper vibe: his melodic, unhinged art-rock was at once intriguing and angsty. He was so alluringly creative that you went along with it, even if you were never sure where Man Man would take you. Carrot on Strings is no less inventive, but its ethos is radical in context of the band's two-decade career. "When I was younger, I would feed off of chaos. I would, you know, be upset and get drunk and smash chairs," Kattner explains. "Now those chairs are in my head: It's less of an outward projection, more of an interior monologue." The name "Carrot on Strings" came to Kattner while experimenting with the sound of someone munching on the vegetable, which you can hear in the cacophonous, similarly named song. It alludes to how success always seemed to dangle uncertainly before him, often just out of reach. But listen intently and you'll hear a more content Kattner finding an uneasy peace: "Life, as far as I've known it, has always been side hustles. Would it be great if I could go into a studio and record for a year without figuring out how to finance it? Yeah, it would be," he says. "But ultimately, I need to keep making music because art is an extension of my psyche. It's how I have learned to translate the palpitations of my heart. Simply put, I'd go insane without it." Growing up as a multiracial Hapa kid (half Filipino, half white) with a father in the U.S. Air Force, Kattner lived an itinerant childhood that included a few pivotal years in Germany, where he honed in on an appreciation for out there German cinema and art. His film obsessions and screenwriting background were crucial to Carrot on Strings. The album nods to the films of Werner Herzog and Rainer Werner Fassbinder as much as Italo-disco, Randy Newman, goth rock, and avant pop. (Kattner continues to work in the film industry with an acting role in the upcoming horror-comedy movie Destroy All Neighbors, for which he also served as composer; music supervising season 1 & 2 of the Interview With The Vampire AMC TV series; and shopping around, with director Matthew Goodhue, a script he wrote that he describes as a Wim Wenders road movie on acid.) In a bid to not overthink anything - his last album took seven years to make - he recorded the bulk of Carrot On Strings in five days in Mant Sounds studio in Glassell Park, Los Angeles with "very chill" producer Matt Schuessler, who had worked on Man Man's cover of Neu!'s "Super" for the seminal Krautrock band's box set. The resulting album represents a newfound sense of self for Kattner, who finds himself inspired and at peace both personally and artistically in ways that eluded him for most of his first 15 years playing music. When, on Carrot On Strings, you hear Kattner croon humbly, or sing of the tension between his outsize stage persona and the thoughtful, soulful guy he actually is, you're hearing Kattner liberate himself. "I first got into music to escape from myself," he says. "And now, it sounds so corny, but I have zero doubt that music ended up saving my life."
