Groovy Hammond garage rock instrumentals from Billy Childish (Thee Headcoats/CTMF etc) and featuring James Taylor (Prisoners/JTQ) We’re loving this new album by The Guy Hamper Trio! Who’s in the band sunshine? Mainly myself on guitar, Julie on bass, Wolf on drums, and of course Jamie on Hammond. A great bonus is Thee Headcoats with Bruce and Tub guest as rhythm section on a track or two. You and James Taylor go back a long way. Do you remember how you first met? The Prisoners were a young group who played with us (the Milkshakes) in the early 1980s. One day they turned up with an organ player, Jamie. Jamie used to then borrow my Selmer guitar amp to play through. You’ve revisited a few old classics on this album, and given them a true makeover. How would you describe The Guy Hamper Trio’s sound? I guess there must be a derogatory term for it but I might need some help finding it. In the very early days of The James Taylor Quartet (Wolf was their drummer back then), I was in the Natural Born Lovers (A blues group with Big Russ and Sexton Ming). We used to be the support for them. I really liked their sound and I guess The Guy Hamper Trio is not a million miles from that blues-influenced, film soundtrack vibe, man. There you made me say “man”. Next thing you know I will be saying “cool!” Let’s just say it's a wizard sound, Jamie is such a great player. Prior to this album The Guy Hamper Trio’s sole release was the ‘Polygraph Test’ 7” from 2009. Why such a big gap? It takes time for all of us to get all our solders in line. “Get on with it mush! And trifle not, your time is but short!” What inspired the album’s title track All The Poisons In the Mud? It’s actually the title of a novel I’ve been writing, and rewriting, over the past 12 years, and is taken from a quote from I Claudius by Robert Graves - a formative influence on me as a 15 year old. The sleeve art is pretty different to your other recent records, could you tell us a about that? Who designed it? I nominally designed it but the truth is that it's essentially a rip off of a Saul Bass sleeve he did for Duke Ellington. We started mining that seam back in the Milkshakes when Bruce (Brand) did the sleeve for Thee Knights of Trashe. The album closes with a storming cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Fire”. What do you think Jimi would make of your version? I've been a fan of Jimi since my elder brother brought his records home in the '60s. Jimi was well known to “dig” others work and interpretations and would no doubt smile, narrow his smoky eyes and say “cool man!” and I would no doubt reply "wizard Jimi!" TRACKLISTING 1. Genius Loves Company is the final studio album by rhythm and blues and soul musician Ray Charles, posthumously released August 31, 2004. Recording sessions for the album took place between June 2003 and March 2004. The album consists of rhythm and blues, soul, country, blues, jazz, and pop standards performed by Charles and several guest musicians, such as Natalie Cole, Elton John, James Taylor, Norah Jones, B.B. King, Gladys Knight, Diana Krall, Van Morrison, Willie Nelson, and Bonnie Raitt. Genius Loves Company was the last album recorded and completed by Charles before his death in June 2004.The album is known as one of Ray Charles" most commercially successful albums. On February 2, 2005, Genius Loves Company was certified triple-platinum in sales by the Recording Industry Association of America following sales of over three million copies in the United States. It also became Charles" second to reach number one on the Billboard 200, after Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music (1962). On February 13, 2005, the album was awarded eight Grammy Awards including Album of the Year and Record of the Year.

Anna Calvi hat den kompletten Soundtrack für die 6 Staffeln von BBC One's Peaky Blinders geschrieben und eingespielt, einer der größten TV-Momente der letzten Jahre für das Königreich. Auch hierzulande hat die Serie viele Fans. Am 6.5.2022 kündigte Anna Calvi nun ihre neue EP ‚Tommy‘ an, auf der vier neue Songs sind, eine Coverversion von "Red Right Hand" - dem Peaky Blinders-Titelsong von Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, eine Coverversion von Bob Dylans "All The Tired Horses" und zwei eigens für die Serie geschriebene Songs, "Ain't No Grave" und "Burning Down". "Ain't No Grave" wurde zum ersten Mal in der 5. Staffel von Peaky Blinders gespielt, ist aber der musikalische Dreh- und Angelpunkt der 6. Staffel, der in allen sechs Episoden auftaucht und mit seiner schwungvollen Präsenz das Drama auf dem Bildschirm unterstreicht. Kurz nachdem Calvi mit der Arbeit an der Musik zu Staffel 6 begonnen hatte, wurde sie mit ihrem ersten Kind schwanger. Aufgrund der anhaltenden Pandemie musste sie jedoch einen neuen Weg finden, um mit anderen Musikern unter strengen Auflagen in London aufzunehmen. Außerdem beschlß sie, ihren langjährigen Kollaborator Nick Launay, der ihr drittes Studioalbum ‚Hunter' sowie von Alben von Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Grinderman und IDLES produziert hatte, ins Boot zu holen. Anna arbeitete bis zur Nacht vor der Geburt ihres Sohnes Elio im November 2021 an die Komposition und machte sich auch danach schnell wieder an die Arbeit, um den Soundtrack fertigzustellen. Als die erste Folge der Staffel ausgestrahlt wurde, war sie noch in den ersten Zügen ihrer Mutterschaft und musste sich in ihr neues Leben erst hineinfinden. Die Fertigstellung der Filmmusik ist ein enormer Erfolg für Anna und zeigt, dass sie als Komponistin und Künstlerin immer noch dabei ist, ihr ganzes Können zu entfalten und zu zeigen.
Über den Prozess sagt Calvi: "Ich lebe nun schon seit Jahren in der Rolle des Tommy Shelby, nachdem ich die fünfte und letzte Staffel von Peaky Blinders vertont habe. Die einzige Möglichkeit, für diese Serie zu schreiben, besteht darin, sich in seinen Kopf hineinzuversetzen - ich habe monatelang jede Nacht von ihm geträumt, und wenn ich meine Gitarre in die Hand nehme, versuche ich, seine inneren Gedanken nachzuspielen. Meine Gitarre ist seine Wut und meine Stimme ist seine Hoffnung. Ich hatte immer das Gefühl, dass er einen Song haben sollte, der ihn auf den Punkt bringt - er ist der ultimative Antiheld - mörderisch, kalt, furchteinflößend, und doch hat er eine tiefe Liebe zu seiner Familie und eine naive, kindliche Hoffnung, dass er sich eines Tages über all das erheben wird. Ich wollte glauben, dass "Aint No Grave" der Song ist, der in seinem Kopf herumschwirrt, während er in Zeitlupe durch sein Leben geht. Ich glaube, Tommy wird für immer ein Teil von mir sein!"

Der Schöpfer von Peaky Blinders, Steven Knight, fügt hinzu: "Eine neue Anna Calvi-Single ist immer ein Grund zum Feiern, und ich möchte mich in die Liste derer einreihen, die sie loben. "Friends would visit, kids would add a voice or two, bees would buzz and we"d get to sit in the South London sun while the music poured out of the speakers and floated across the lawn. Sometimes we decided it"s okay to just let it happen naturally, not to try too hard - just get out of the way let the songs take shape, and that maybe you don"t have to be in a bad place to make the deeper cuts." Turin Brakes released Mercury Prize shortlisted the Optimist Lp in March 2001 (achieving gold status in the UK), followed up by 2003"s Ether Song which featured the top 5 hit single Pain Killer (Summer Rain). The band has since moved on to rack up seven top 40 singles, seven top 40 albums and over a million record sales worldwide.

The second extended EP by London synth cyberneticians 3 Electro Knights is Rave One, which is human and machine in hot synergy. If Blixa Bargeld played the synthesizer he would probably come up with something like the crazed lead on Rave One. I Move In Another Dimension is a remix of very limited lathe cut single, which Rough Trade shops described as “Electro sqwonk and clatter meet Patti Smith style beat poetry’. This, the “Mandy” remix ups the psychedelic energy, with Mandy referring to the acid drenched Nicholas Cage starring film of the same name. The flip side track, I_tense, is a 14 trip into territory somewhere between Berlin School synth and early Aphex Twin driven by perhaps the greatest synthesizer ever made, the Roland System 100m, and was recorded in one take with no overdubs Very limited copies – 250 only – on white vinyl with orange swirl. The sleeve design is by acclaimed graphic designer Asif Khan. Destroy/Exist wrote of their cassette album Sketches For Another Future: “Through krautrock, psychedelic, synthpunk, and modern electronica passages, 3 Electro Knights fully realize their analog electronic sound, exposing their warm connection with their synths.” 3 Electro Knights are Daren Pickles (Supercharger, bushpilot), Nik Clifford (Jesus Licks, bushpilot) and Ross Holloway (bushpilot).

3 Electro Knights are cybernetic synthesizer group from London playing science fiction music for the 21st century. The 4 track Red Admiral EP is their first proper release following a very limited lathe cut single which was available through Norman Records and Rough Trade in very small quantities and sold out immediately, and a limited cassette album, Sketches For Another Future. The single I Move In Another Dimension was described by Rough Trade as “Electro sqwonk and clatter meet Patti Smith style beat poetry on this unbelievably scarce 7”. Mountain Movers arguably are the perfect band for all the true "heads" out there. The New Haven quartet have been at it for 15 years, and the "newest" lineup (now at it for well over a decade; vocalist/guitarist Dan Greene, bassist Rick Omonte, guitarist Kryssi Battalene and drummer Ross Menze) have firmly grasped what it takes to fry brains; achingly beautiful melodies buoyed by a life raft of white-hot guitar scree and mind-melting feedback. "World What World" is the band's eighth album and third for Trouble In Mind Records. "World What World" is the newest chapter of the group's continued explorations and efforts to refine their sound. The lyrics of "World What World"s songs all imply a protagonist on a quest; the title itself is an implied query with no question mark; is it a question, or a statement?. The one-two punch of opener "I Wanna See The Sun" and "Final Sunset" lay out what's in store; Crazy Horse-inspired sandpaper melodies sit comfortably next to improvised, PSF-influenced six-string ragers. The group performs together effortlessly and telepathically, subverting the loud/quiet/loud dynamic that has saturated independent music since the late-Eighties. The loud parts and quiet parts are like waves; indistinguishable from each other, creating a fluid dynamism and intensity that swallows the listener up in its current, sweeping it toward oblivion. Hyperbole, you say? Watch out for midway through "Then The Moon" when the tune's lilting waltz pivots into a casually blistering solo by Battalene before fading into the melancholic "Haunted Eyes" - beckoning you with a mournful sidelong glance. Side Two opens with "Staggering With A Lantern", an elegant, lumbering instrumental improvisation again showcasing the synergistic shredding of the group's guitarists. The sticky lyrical hooks and sideways jangle of "Way Back To The World" and "The Last City"s midnight-hour, mellow singe come next, before concluding "World What World"s journey with "Flock of Swans". The song is the perfect closer and culmination of the album's mission statement. The subjects that populate Greene's songs and visual imagery augment his elegiac lyrics, awash in magical realism and fantastic symbolism; knights, fighters, dragons, masks. Poetic missives are launched from the heart straight into the neural pathways, guided by the rhythm section's otherworldly chemistry and Battalene's masterful control over her instrument. Mountain Movers have been at it too long to care about acclaim. They do it because the music calls out to them, and they let it carry them away.
