By 1986 Nikki Sudden had found a home at Creation Records releasing Texas.
Widely considered Sudden’s solo magnum opus,. Co-produced by Sudden and his brother Epic Soundtracks, Texas is a masterpiece. Like Young’s After the Gold Rush or the Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers, Texas holds together as a damaged, atmospheric take on Americana. At this time in rock history, Sudden was nearly alone in referencing Brian Wilson’s Smile album.

To further unravel where Evan’s head was at during the period of its creation, this deluxe double album comes with a record of exquisite and typically eclectic scene setting covers that occupied B-sides and alternative format versions, plus other super rare offcuts, live takes and remixes. A diet of Volcano Suns, Glen Campbell, The Jacobites, The Sir Douglas Quintet and Whitney Houston influenced Evan’s thinking and added further colour to an album that remains something of a Dorian Gray-style masterpiece. The first side of extras is rounded off with the never before released ‘Arise’, originally set for the remake of Great Expectations and later realised as Rancho Santa Fe on solo album ‘Baby I’m Bored’.

Streng limitierte Neuveröffentlichung auf blauem Vinyl der 1985er Mini-LP der australischen Indie-Rock-Legenden Crime & The City Solution. 'Just South Of Heaven' wurde in der "Londoner Besetzung" mit Simon Bonney, den ehemaligen Birthday-Party-Größen Mick Harvey und Rowland S. Howard, Rowlands Bassisten-Bruder Harry Howard und dem Schlagzeuger Epic Soundtracks (früher bei Swell Maps und Jacobites) aufgenommen. Die Platte präsentierte einen verfeinerten Sound im Vergleich zu ihrer selbstproduzierten EP und wurde zwischen den Hansa Tonstudios in Berlin und The Strongroom in London mit Toningenieur Flood (a-ha, Depeche Mode, Erasure) aufgenommen. In einem Interview mit Uncut erklärte Harry: "Die erste EP, 'The Dangling Man', war ein bisschen roh. Für 'Just South Of Heaven' haben wir versucht, eine elegantere Platte zu machen, und das hat ganz gut funktioniert."

Dieses Album enthält ausführliche Anmerkungen von Gründungsmitglied Harry Howard und wird zusammen mit den 2024-Remaster-Editionen ihres Debütalbums 'Get Lost (Don't Lie!)' und ihres zweiten Albums 'I'm Never Gonna Die Again' veröffentlicht. Auf der Tracklist dieses Albums finden sich ihre mitreißende, treibende Neuinterpretation von Alice Coopers 'Luney Tune' aus dem Jahr 1972 sowie Coverversionen von 'Open Up and Bleed' von Iggy Pop & James Williamson, 'Some Velvet Morning' von Lee Hazlewood, das Leadsänger Rowland S. Howard vor allem mit Lydia Lynch coverte, und 'Hey! Little Child' von Alex Chilton.

Die Band bestand aus dem in Australien geborenen Rowland S. Howard, der als Nick Caves Mitstreiter bei der Birthday Party bekannt wurde, seinem Bass spielenden Bruder Harry Howard, dem Schlagzeuger Epic Soundtracks (früher bei Swell Maps und Jacobites) und der Keyboarderin Genevieve McGuckin. Sie schlossen sich 1987 zusammen, nachdem Soundtracks und die Howard-Brüder sich von Crime & the City Solution getrennt hatten, und gründeten zusammen mit McGuckin These Immortal Souls in London.

Reissue of the classic 1987 LP by former Barracudas vocalist, Jeremy Gluck in collaboration with Nikki Sudden (Swell Maps + Jacobites) & Rowland S Howard (The Birthday Party + These Immortal Souls) with contributions from Jeffrey Lee Pierce (The Gun Club) and Epic Soundtracks (Swell Maps + Crime & The City Solution). The original LP track 'Hymn' has been removed (Jeremy never liked the vocal) and replaced with a different sounding reprise of the opening track 'Looking For a Place To Fall' at the end of side one, making it feel like a suite. Seven years and a handful of lifetimes ago, New Bums came
out of nowhere with their debut album, ‘Voices In a Rented
Room’ - a record the New York Times described as “feeling like
it’s falling apart.” New Bums took this as a compliment and,
thus emboldened, they toured relentlessly in support of the
release: criss-crossing the USA in the spring of 2014, with a
European run that summer. Then, silence descended, as the
Bums withdrew to the place from which they’d mysteriously
emerged.
Now, the Bums are back. 2021 finds them with a new album in
hand. Following a West Coast US tour in late 2019 it’s clear that
the duo of Donovan Quinn (Skygreen Leopards) and Ben
Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance, Rangda, etc) are fully
reanimated, as evidenced by the songs and sounds of ‘Last
Time I Saw Grace’.
Retaining the drunk-dog-locomotion of their debut, New Bums
sprinkle a bit of fresh fancy into their signature twin guitarsand-vocals sound, with cleaner recording techniques, further
developments in harmonies and a new appreciation for a song
with more than two parts, making ‘Last Time I Saw Grace’
nothing less than the perfect progression from the purposefully
murky mixes of their debut.
Continuing to embrace an acoustic rock ’n’ roll sound, inspired
by artists such as Jacobites, Robyn Hitchcock, Johnny
Thunders, Replacements and such, New Bums push the words
and the stories to the front of the line, crafting tales with satiric
glee on ‘Last Time I Saw Grace’. However, this world of empty
perfume bottles, bodies tied to masts and moving onward to
devastation (after the bottle on the table pulls out a gun) feels
much more Gombrowiczian dreamscape than drunken night on
the town. Yes, everything is wasted but this is an existential
wasteland rather than a substance-laden one. This combination
of arch Californian post-aristocratic melodrama with torn and
frayed acoustic guitars opens up a new genre entirely, one
those at Drag City are tempted to call Rent Control Romantic.
