Remastered Reissue eines der ikonischten Rare-Groove-Tracks der frühen 1980er: "Turned On To You" der Eighties Ladies in der Full-Length-Version, produziert von Roy Ayers und erschienen 1981 auf seinem Label Uno Melodic. Der Track wurde mehrfach gesamplet, u.a. von A Tribe Called Quest und jüngst von den Nujabes feat. C.L. Auf der 12" Flipside befinden sich erstmals zwei remastered Tracks aus dem Album "Ladies Of The Eighties".

Indem er immer neue Kunstformen und Kanäle wählt, um seine Vision zu verwirklichen, ist der Franzose Woodkid im letzten Jahrzehnt zu einer heimlichen Ikone avanciert: Er ist ein audiovisueller Ausnahmekünstler, dessen Werk stets seine Handschrift trägt, obwohl es mit jeder Zusammenarbeit und jedem Release neue Formen annimmt. Dass Woodkid jemand ist, dem es gelingt, eine Brücke zwischen der alten und der neuen Welt zu schlagen, wussten wir bereits. Und das nicht bloß, weil der junge Franzose schon mit etlichen Superschwergewichten der internationalen Popwelt zusammengearbeitet hat: Lana Del Rey und Drake waren da genauso dabei wie Rihanna oder auch Pharrell. Noch entscheidender und außergewöhnlicher ist vielmehr, dass er zu den wenigen Künstlern gehört, die wirklich inter- bzw. multidisziplinär arbeiten, klassische Genre- und Gattungsgrenzen hinter sich lassen, weil ihn einfach so unglaublich viele Ausdrucks- und Kunstformen interessieren und faszinieren. Als Musiker reichte ihm ein einziges Album – The Golden Age –, um damit ein deutliches klangliches und visuelles Zeichen zu setzen und neben unglaublich viel Kritikerlob auch unzählige Fans für sein Projekt zu gewinnen. Und jetzt, nach einer gut fünfjährigen Reife-, Konzentrations- und Experimentierphase, geht er noch mit seinem neuen Album S16 einen Schritt weiter. O YAMA O explores a certain domestic and democratic quality of everyday life, born through associations to folk music of Japan and a folding of myth, tradition, and routine; the non-spectacular and the sublime.

Formed of musician and artist Rie Nakajima and Cafe OTO co-founder Keiko Yamamoto, the group has performed since 2014 at venues and festivals such as noshowspace, Ikon Gallery, Wysing Arts Centre, Supernormal, Borealis Festival, Mayhem, and allEars Festival.

Nakajima’s performance often focuses on the use of found and kinetic objects, using modest items such as rice bowls, toys, clockwork, balloons and small motors as instruments to create a “micro orchestra”. Elements are layered into impressive and immersive atmospheres. Yamamoto alternatively floats and charges through this with body and voice; chanting, incanting, thundering, whispering, stamping on the floor.

Their debut album consolidates their musical conversations into keenly paced studio music, the duo working with additional instrumentation and a resolved focus on melody to provide vivid portraits of folkloric Japan in song.

They move between pop and the philosophical, defined by the overall space afforded to texture and movement. In small, delicate sound an intimate musical climate is established that reflects on life, telling stories of improvised clockwork, whispered dreams, small movements of the hand and the rhythm to be found in the shuffle of a deck of cards.
Grandly theatric and dramatic flourishes add solidity to these illustrations, operas driven by the swooping energy and power of Yamamoto’s voice can be playful or emotionally charged, particularly when the duo arrange themselves in ensemble with violinist Billy Steiger and percussionist Marie Roux. Production by David Cunningham creates the shadowy presence of a leftfield Flying Lizards dubwise depth that adds subtle strangeness to the atmosphere. The result is something raw, full-bodied; full of energy, grace and mystery.

"What do you do when the body has been through trauma? What do you do with a new body? How do you drive it?

I want to reconnect my mind to the body. I don't know whose body this is anymore. How do I rebuild my physical strength when I'm so tired? How do I accept this body and care for it?

Konstruktivists is the Industrial project of Glenn Michael Wallis from Kent, England. In the late ’70s Wallis was a “control agent” for Throbbing Gristle and the Industrial Records crew. Influenced by Krautrock bands like Can, NEU!, Cluster/Harmonia as well as Tuxedomoon, Yello, Chrome, and SPK, Glenn began to record his own material. After several cassette releases, Konstruktivists’ first LP ‘A Dissembly’ was released in 1982 followed by ‘Psykho Genetika’ in 1983 and ‘Black December’ in 1984. That same year Wallis collaborated with his friend Chris Carter, of Throbbing Gristle and Chris and Cosey fame, on CTI’s ‘Conspiracy International One’.

In 1985, Glenn spent a week at Chris and Cosey’s studio recording 11 tracks that would become the ’Glennascaul’ album originally released on Nigel Ayers' Sterile Records. Produced and mixed by Chris Carter, it marked a complete change in style for the band towards a beat-orientated rhythmic sound. ‘Glennascaul’ is proto electro at its very best, with Glenn’s hallucinogenic vocals on top. A musical collage designed to invoke images in the mind. The back cover clearly states “No guitars. No Fairlights.” For this deluxe reissue we’ve added two bonus tracks recorded around the same time, now vinyl for the first time ever. All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The record is housed in an exact replica of the original jacket featuring cover art, which is a co-production of Trevor Brown, Nigel Ayers and an image Glenn Wallis supplied. Each copy includes a double-sided 8x11 insert with liner notes by Nigel Ayers, press clippings, and photos.

Wiederveröffentlichung des Albums aus dem Jahr 2000! - "Humble African" ist für viele Experten der beste Longplayer, den Roots-Ikone Culture aka Joseph Hill in den 90er & Nuller Jahren veröffentlicht hat. Mit den Gästen Marcia Griffiths, Morgan Heritage und Tony Rebel sowie einer starken Besetzung an Musikern als Rhythmusgruppe mit kompletten Bläsersatz von Dean Fraser (Saxophon), Chico Chin (Trompete) und Nambo Robinson (Posaune). Am Mischpult saßen bei der Aufnahme die Toningenieure Errol Brown und Shane Brown, den finalen Mix übernahm Stephen Stanley unter der Federführung des Produzentenduos Lynford "Fatta" Marshall & Collin "Bulby" York aka Fat Eyes Team.

In 2015, Freestyle Records re-issued the groundbreaking 'African Party' album by the somewhat mysterious figure of Ginger (George Folunsho) Johnson. Recorded in 1967, nearly 20 years after he first arrived in post war London and immediately began performing and recording with London jazz stalwarts Ronnie Scott and Pete King.

Credited by those in the know (including Giles Peterson, Louie Vega, Fela Kuti's drummer Tony Allen & writer David Toop) as the godfather of afrobeat, Ginger and his group, The African Messengers enjoyed a varied career as the go to afro-cuban percussion group for recording sessions in the UK, working with Georgie Fame, Osibisa, Madeleine Bell and Quincy Jones - as well as acting us mentor to a young Fela Kuti and members of Cymande who cut their teeth as members of his ensemble. They also performed at The Royal Variety Performance, Ginger's music featured in the James Bond film 'Live & Let Die' and Ginger himself appears on screen drumming in the Hammer Films cult classic 'She', and famously performed with The Rolling Stones in Hyde Park in 1969.

Aside from 'African Party', and several Hi Life singles released on the Melodisc label in the 50's, it was thought that there were no further recordings by this hugely influential musician . Eventually, prompted by the attention afforded the Freestyle re-issues - Ginger's son Dennis Dee Mac Johnson was contacted by Uchenna Ikonne, a renowned African music collector, who told him he had discovered one rather battered original copy of a 45 single, released in the mid 70's on the short lived 'Afrodesia' label,

For Record Store Day 2019, Freestyle are proud to release the 2 tracks on a fresh vinyl 45. 'Witchdoctor' is not the track of the same name on African Party, but it and 'Nawa' (written by Dizzy Gillespie cohort Chano Pozo) demonstrate a musical progression as funk had stamped it's indelible footprint on Ginger's music along with afro-cuban rhythms and jazz.

The 68th edition of the DJ-Kicks mix series is another landmark one, withexperimental producer Laurel Halo taking the reins. The American's adventurous28 track trip features seven exclusives, including two of her own plus thosefrom Rrose, Machinewoman, FIT Siegel, Nick LeoIün and Ikonika. An electronic outlier, Halo hails from Ann Arbor, Michigan, but has been basedin Berlin for a number of years. Landing on labels like Hyperdub, Honest Jon'sand Latency, Halo has released a body of work ranging in style, yet cohered byproduction and compositional tendencies that sound distinctly her own. Herstudio work tends to be a multi-layered mix of the electronic and theacoustic, the organic and the synthetic. As a DJ, meanwhile, she lays downmore floor focussed mixes of techno, bass and worldly drum rhythms, and herlive sets are similarly visceral and direct. Halo's DJ-kicks packs a lot in to just 60 minutes. It kicks off with the firstof two of her own exclusives, 'Public Art', a tactile piano loop that sets themelodic tone of the mix in focus. Crunchy drums soon take over and begin whatis a blistering ride through electro, trippy minimalism and textures thatrange from icy and dubby to steel plated and sharp from the likes of Red Axes,Parris and an exclusive from Rrose. Another exclusive, rough and ready cut from Machinewoman follows, before themid section twists and turns on surging drum patterns, frantic industrialtextures and spaced out gqom sounds from the likes of Griffit Vigo, DarioZenker and Final Cut. This is a mix forever on the move: one minute itstightly coiled and kinetic, the next it's loose and joyful before switchinginto more cerebral and insular passages that keep you intrigued. Fusing together so many disparate sounds and textures is no mean feat, butlike everything Halo does, here they all add up to something as thrilling andedgy as it is unpredictable and compelling.

For the 9th instalment in DBA's Dubs series Ikonika and Big Strick square off head to head, following the Hyperdub artist's genre-defying Distractions LP earlier this year. Oral Suspension is an instrumental which switches rough-shod between a UK halfstep crunch and a Hoop Dreams era Chicago bounce. On the flip Big Strick brings his characteristic smooth groove to the table for the remix, which, though laidback, is nevertheless bound to energise the dancers.

Evading the ubiquitous pigeonholes, Ikonika has variously been known for her dubstep innovations, her uk funky experiments on Hum and Buzz and her post-urban sketches for Hyperdub. Meanwhile though an interest in techno and specifically the sounds of the Midwest have underpinned her work.

Ikonika's third album 'Distractions' builds on 2013's 'Aerotropolis', and the title answers the question Why has the album taken so long' In the last few years she's been building up a strong CV of remixes, from Chvurches to Dawn Richard, Austra and Junior Boys, as well as DJing and working on this album. 'Distractions' distils the character of Ikonika's music productions across a wider set of styles than previous albums, and she subtly fuses and switches elements from contrasting genres, giving the whole set a uniqueness and consistency that puts it in its own lane. Furthermore what sits at the centre of 'Distractions' more than ever is her love of R&B and hip hop, in all its forms, which has opened the door to bring in a selection of guests in a way she's not fully explored before. From the full throttle blend of grime and 80s synth soul 'Noblest' with Andrea Galaxy, to the reflective 'Sacrifice' with up and coming MC Jammz, a slowjam that merges dubstep with hip house drums. The final vocal track is the languid 'Hazefield' co-produced with Sweyn J and featuring Jessy Lanza on vocals. Its mix of mechanic clunk and minimalist, lulling funk could only happen in 2017. The LP artwork takes its inspiration from West London's Golden Mile, a stretch of the Great West Road where the A4 meets the M4, and the road takes on the character of the arcade game Poll Position, with art deco factories and illuminated, hi-tech signage selling lifestyle products. It's this kind of mix of futuristic and industrious with a touch of gentle glamour that the album exudes.

Stilecht beginnend mit verträumten, klingelnden Synthie-Flächen, entpuppt sich THORE PFEIFFER's WIE ES EUCH GEFÄLLT schnell als sofortiger Pop Ambient-Klassiker, gefolgt von Thore's zweitem Beitrag, einem Gitarren-beseelten Trip in die Zone namens NERO - zusammen bereiten diese immens atmosphärischen Tracks einen idealen Boden für POP AMBIENT 2015, verraten aber auch das verblüffende Talent dieses jungen Produzenten so gar nicht wie ein Neuzugang zu klingen. Als ehemaliger Mitstreiter des ikonischen Projekts Closer Musik hat DIRK LEYERS inzwischen eigene Wege eingeschlagen, fällt aber nach wie vor durch seinen Hang zu stilistischer Vielseitigkeit und wonnigen Melodien auf - schön in den Vordergrund gerückt im paßgenau betitelten DAYDREAMER, einem unwiderstehlich nostalgischen Synthie-Epos zwischen Neonlichtern und Lagerfeuern. Währenddessen vermählt Multiinstrumentalist und Komponist GREGOR SCHWELLENBACH seine avantgardistischen und folkloristischen Interessen im langsamen, auf lässigste Weise monumental erscheinenden ASSPERG - ein nahezu unmöglicher Track, der sich gleichermaßen massiv wie zerbrechlich anfühlt.

50 Cent... was soll man zu dieser Rap-Ikone noch sagen 30 Millionen verkaufte Alben, #1 Hip Hop Künstler in den 'Billboard Artists of the 2000's', Grammy-Gewinner, Schauspieler in Filmen mit Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone und Bruce Willis (just to name a few...) und Geschäftsmann mit eigenen Klamottenmarken, Videospielen, Düften, Kopfhörern und Gesundheitsdrinks. The second of the Decadub vinyl-only releases dedicates three of its four sides to a volley of woozy and twisted footwork from most of the key members of Chicago's Teklife crew. Side One starts with DJ Rashad and Gant Man's squiggly 303 banger 'Acid Life' and moves onto Taso & Djunya's Darwinian banger 'Only The Strong Will Survive'. Side Two descends into DJ Spinn's bombastic 'All My Teklife' and then Earl, Rashad & Taye's 'Bombaklot' which takes Hyperdub full circle with a yardcore bomb like a 2014 upgrade of the label's early days. Side Three leads with DJ Earl's immaculate diva vocal cut-up of 'I'm Gonna Get You', then moves on into DJ Taye's fizzling R&B jam 'Get Em Up' and the stone cold, warped humour of 'Icemaster' by Heavee. On the fourth and final side, Tokyo-based ally Quarta330 returns to craft 'Hanabi', an epic, uptempo synthesiser jam. Young gun Champion follows with 'Power Cut', its minimal, energetic and militant kicks and bass molded with cowbell and lots of tight edits, before dropping some neat keys and a warping bassline two thirds in. Ikonika finishes things off with the solemn march of 'Tug Zone', opening slow but building in flickering high hats and gaseous cymbals into a track which could have emanated from Battlestar Galactica.

"Destroy The Invaders" gilt als das beste Dubalbum der frühen 80er von Lloyd James aka Prince Jammy, dem späterem King Jammy ! - Aufgenommen im Channel One Studio mit der Roots Radics Band und im King Tubby's Studio abgemischt, u.a. basierend auf Originalversionen von Junior Reid, Hugh Mundell und Wayne Smith, wurde die LP, auch inspiriert durch den anhaltenden Erfolg von Computerspielen wie 'Space Invaders', in einem ikonographischen Artwork von Tony McDermott erstmalig 1982 veröffentlicht. Ein Longplayer der in jede gepflegte Sammlung des Dub Reggae gehört!

Das formidable Porträt der Reggae-Ikone ist in der 10-Track LP-Vinyl-Edition wieder neu aufgelegt! - Lincoln Barrington "Sugar" Minott (25. Mai 1956 - 10. Juli 2010) war einer der ganz großen jamaikanischen Künstler, ein Sänger mit unnachahmlicher Stimme, Produzent und Soundsystembetreiber. Er begann als 13-jähriger Teenager im Trio The African Brothers, 1974 ging er zu Studio One, wo seine Solokarriere startete, er gründete sein eigenes Label Black Roots und feierte schließlich im Jahr 1981 den Top 5-Hit "Good Thing Going" in den englischen Charts.
