Die Zusammenarbeit zwischen NEIL GAIMAN und dem FOURPLAY STRING QUARTET startete 2010, als das Sydney Opera House's Graphic Festival FOURPLAY beauftragte, einen Soundtrack zu NEILs Novelle "The Truth is a Cave in the Black Mountains" für eine Live-Performance mit ihm zu schreiben. Diese Zusammenarbeit führte zu einer anhaltenden Freundschaft und kreativen Zusammenarbeit, bei der NEIL und FOURPLAY das Konzept einer Reihe von Original-Werken rund um das Konzept des Tierkreises erarbeiteten, wobei die traditionellen Zeichen durch eine neue Sammlung von Wörtern und Objekten ersetzt wurden, die Aspekte des Lebens erkunden. Sie nannten diese Zusammenarbeit Signs. Einige der Arbeiten in "Signs Of Life" wurden für dieses Projekt entwickelt. Neben diesen Original-Werken gibt es neue Gedichte und Geschichten von NEIL, die mit der Musik von FOURPLAY verwoben sind, zwei Covers von Songs aus NEILs früheren Projekten und ein Instrumental-Stück, das von NEILs Arbeit inspiriert ist. Da sich alle Beteiligten in ihrer Kreativität immer geweigert haben, sich in eine Schublade stecken zu lassen, haben sie mit "Signs Of Life" etwas Bemerkenswertes und Einzigartiges geschaffen. Das Album ist eine großartige, bahnbrechende und genreübergreifende Zusammenarbeit zwischen einem großartigen Autor und einem einzigartigen Musik-Ensemble. Das FOURPLAY STRING QUARTET ist in der Welt der Streichquartette etwas ganz Besonderes. FOURPLAY, die eher eine Band als ein klassisches Ensemble sind, improvisieren, jammen mit Ideen und verwenden außergewöhnliche Instrumental-Techniken und Effekte, um verblüffend originelle Klänge zu erzeugen. Nachdem sie zunächst durch ihre Interpretationen der Musik von Künstlern wie METALLICA, THE STROKES, RADIOHEAD, THE BEASTIE BOYS und CHARLES MINGUS weltweit bekannt geworden waren, konzentrierten sich FOURPLAY auf die Entwicklung ihres eigenen Repertoires und auf die Zusammenarbeit mit hybriden Medien und Projekten.

Nach der Veröffentlichung des von der Kritik hochgelobten Konzertfilms, „Live At Bush Hall“, haben Black Country, New Road heute das entsprechende Live-Album zum Konzert angekündigt, das das Set ihrer drei aufeinanderfolgenden, ausverkauften Shows in der historischen Bush Hall im Dezember 2022 enthält.
Anfang 2022 veröffentlichten Black Country, New Road ihr chartsstürmendes neues Album, „Ants From Up There“, das in Deutschland sensationell auf #10 der Albumcharts und in England sogar auf #3 (ihre zweites Top-5Album Veröffentlichung in UK innerhalb von 12 Monaten, nach ihrem für den Mercury Prize nominierten Debüt „For The First Time“), das von Fans und Kritiker:innen gleichermaßen gelobt wurde, zahlreiche 5-Sterne-Rezensionen erhielt und auf Jahresendlisten auf der ganzen Welt auftauchte, einschließlich der Wahl zur Nummer 1 durch Fans auf r/indieheads, Rate Your Music und Nummer 3 durch Pitchfork-Leser:innen. Und das, obwohl das Album nur wenige Tage nach der Bekanntgabe des Ausstiegs von Frontmann Isaac Wood aus der Band veröffentlicht wurde. Nach dem Erfolg von „Ants From Up There“ und mit einem vollen Tourneeplan im Jahr 2023 vor Augen, beschlossen die verbliebenen Mitglieder Lewis Evans, May Kershaw, Georgia Ellery, Luke Mark, Tyler Hyde und Charlie Wayne, die nun zu sechst sind, komplett neues Material zu schreiben und aufzuführen. Sie spielten auf Festivals vor großen Zuschauer:innenzahlen, darunter triumphale Auftritte auf dem Primavera, dem Green Man und dem Fuji Rock, und traten in eine neue musikalische Phase ein, in der sie Songs, die erst wenige Wochen alt waren, weiterentwickelten. Außerdem tourten sie mit Black Midi durch die USA und spielten zwei ausverkaufte Konzerte in New York. Die Band hat sich dafür entschieden, die Idee einer Frontperson komplett aufzugeben und teilt sich stattdessen die Gesangsaufgaben mit Tyler Hyde, die bei einer Reihe von Tracks den Gesang übernimmt, darunter „Up Song“, der die Freundschaft und den Erfolg der Band mit dem Text „Look at what we did together, BC,NR friends forever“ feiert. An anderer Stelle übernimmt May den Gesang bei „The Boy“ und „Turbines/ Pigs“, einem umgehenden Fan-Liebling und einem der verletzlichsten Stücke der Band bis heute. Lewis hingegen singt bei „Across The Pond Friend“ und „The Wrong Trousers“. Mit diesem Schritt hat sich der Sound der Band weiter verändert, so dass weitere Einflüsse und Vielfalt in ihr Songwriting einfließen konnten. Als sich die Songs während des stetigen Tourens weiterentwickelten, beschlossen sie, konventionelle nächste Schritte zu vermeiden. Die Leute, die auf neues Material warten, bekommen acht neue, hervorragende Songs zu hören, aber nicht so, wie sie es vielleicht erwartet hätten. „Wir wollten kein Studioalbum machen.“, sagt BC, NR-Pianistin May Kershaw. „Wir haben die neuen Stücke speziell für Live-Auftritte geschrieben und dachten, es wäre eine gute Idee, eine Performance zu veröffentlichen.“

Paradoxically, the album's transversal theme is travel in all its forms. Because there are the journeys we have made, those we cannot make, or no longer want to make, those we like to relive in our memories, and inner journeys too.

The album cover features an aeroplane staircase. Standing alone in the middle of a runway, we don't know if it has just been used for boarding or if it is waiting for a plane that will never come. Baltimore is also a little more than a record. It has been designed to be listened to in one go, under very specific conditions. Entirely remastered from the original analogue tapes and featuring brand new artwork designed by Luke Insect, this Four Flies reissue finally brings back to life one of the most surprising albums from the strange phenomenon that was the Italian library music of the Seventies.

Gianni Safred's Electronic Designs was released in 1977 on the Milanese label Jump, in their "Music Scene" series, simply as a collection of musical pieces intended for use in television programmes. However, hidden behind a nondescript cover were twelve electronic music tracks revealing a recognizable style of composition; twelve little gems masterly combining experimentation, catchiness and practical functionality thanks to a unified and unique style. Each through a specific mood, these tracks give expression to Safred's distinctive sound, where irresistible mechanical grooves are over-layered with melodic lines perfectly played on a Polymoog or ARP Odyssey.

A native of Trieste, Safred started out with little swing bands soon after WW2, before eventually playing with great soloists like Django Rheinhardt. Ultimately, it is his background as a jazz pianist that makes Electronic Designs so special. As with other Italian jazzmen who got into synthesizers (above all, Piero Umiliani), Safred's blend of complex harmonies and (quasi-) bebop virtuoso flourishes, with its obsessive repetitions and refined tone colours, gives a retro-futuristic quality to this library album, whose electronic music islight-years ahead ofthe 'pop' electronic music of the time and, in many ways, anticipates the best stylistic features of early-Nineties dance music.

Safred best expresses his experimental verve – and does a great job in creating the 'electronic designs' of the title – in "Mystification", "City Problems", "Trapdoor", "Planetarium" and "Poe's Clock", all of which unfold through hypnotic beats and sinusoid or square wave explosions. In other tracks, however, the compositional style is less unconventional, with relaxed yet not banal atmospheres ("Spheres", "Elastic Points", "Sacred Interlude"), as well as flashes of irresistible groove inspired by Herbie Hancock's more pop-oriented work ("Automation Age", "Jazz Motion Study", "Bottom Up"). The album's masterpiece is arguably "Hasty Chant", a detective-funk ride with an unforgettable theme, which manages to pull all of the album's various strands into a cohesive whole – as a side note, the allusive and apt description of the song on the back cover reads: "Things are happening".

Summer Forever And Ever succeeds Blue Gene Stew, 2019’s debut by the Wolfmanhattan Project, a collective unit co-starring three musicians familiar to In The Red listeners: singer-guitarist Mick Collins, front man of the seminal Detroit-bred garage units the Dirtbombs and the Gories, singer-guitarist Kid Congo Powers who played in such legendary bands as the Gun Club, the Cramps, and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and drummer-vocalist Bob Bert, whose skin work has distinguished albums by Sonic Youth, Pussy Galore, Lydia Lunch’s Retrovirus, and Jon Spencer and the HITmakers. The group was founded as a studio project by three musicians who are kept busy by their primary bands. Blue Gene Stew was written and recorded quickly. Powers says, “I think that the new record was much more a group effort. I think there’s more of a group kind of sound, as eclectic as it is. I feel like we all played together, as opposed to playing on each other’s songs.” Bert notes that the band’s music is grounded in spontaneity: “Me and Mick went in and had a couple of rehearsals, and I would come up with a beat, he would come up with a riff. I still have a cassette Walkman, believe it or not, and we’d put it down on that. It wasn’t even a full song. We’d just put down a bunch of ideas. When it came to recording we’d lay down the basic tracks and work out different things, and a lot of it was made up on the spot. It really is a great collaboration.” Recorded and engineered by Mark C. of Live Skull at his studio, Summer Forever And Ever finds Powers playing piano and the Kaoss touch-pad effects unit and Collins playing synthesizer, in addition to their usual instruments. The album reflects the same eclectic mix of musical styles heard on the debut. References and sometimes even direct quotes from sources as diverse as the Andrea True Connection, Captain Beefheart, the Count Five, and Eurythmics leap out of the speakers.

To celebrate we have compiled an album of the very best dance recordings the label made in 1965 and 1966, primarily in Washington DC.

The business’s failure made this music incredibly hard to find for record collectors and Shrine is rightly known as the rarest soul label.

It is much more than that though. The music was made by some one of the original founders of Motown, Raynoma Liles Gordy and her Motown-schooled cousin Mike Ossman, New York music business luminaries Eddie Singleton and Harry Bass and the up-and-coming talents of Washington’s Keni St Lewis and Maxx Kidd. The acts included the hugely respected Ray Pollard and fellow New Yorker J.D. Bryant, talented and established Washington and Baltimore acts Eddie Daye & The 4 Bars, Bobby Reed and the Enjoyables. Importantly, they discovered and developed the local talent of the area in the shape of the Cautions, Les Chansonettes, the Prophets and Shirley Edwards.

It took decades for UK Northern Soul fans to realise the significance of the label. It finally clicked for Stafford’s Top Of The World all-nighter DJs who searched out the incredibly hard to find later releases and played them to the cult-following of the rare soul scene. The scarcity was caused by Shrine pressing up a batch of fourteen future singles but only getting a handful released before they folded. The vast majority of the later releases were destroyed in a warehouse fire or simply binned as stillborn commercial failures.

Such was the scarcity that when the first Shrine compilations were issued in 1990, the Prophets tracks from Eddie Singleton’s master tapes were assumed to be unreleased - until Shrine sleuth Andy Rix later obtained one from a group member.

Touring multi-instrumentalist talent Jeffrey Cain is now a full-time member since the departure of Peter Koppes in early 2020. Completing the line-up, newcomer Ashley Naylor is one of Australia's finest guitarists and a long-time member of Paul Kelly's touring band. Formed in 1980, The Church found early chart success in their homeland, before establishing themselves as an international touring entity, earning a worldwide hit with the single 'Under The Milky Way' from their hit 1988 album Starfish, while their stellar live shows have been deemed 'spectacular' by MAGNET magazine and continue to win the hearts of industry and fans across the world. von 1980 und das bahnbrechende Pirates. Großartiger Jazz imitiert nie das, was bereits gemacht wurde. Im Laufe ihrer Karriere hat die mit einem Grammy ausgezeichnete Singer-Songwriterin eine außerordentlich breite Palette von Songs interpretiert, oft auf ein und

Das im März 1979 aufgenommene Album Saudades des brasilianischen Perkussionisten Naná Vasconcelos war die Erfüllung eines Traums für einen Musiker, der sich schon lange danach gesehnt hatte, die Berimbau in einem orchestralen Kontext zu hören. Dieses ”Konzert” für einen innovativen Spieler eines traditionellen Instruments wurde durch den kreativen Beitrag von Egberto Gismonti ermöglicht, der hier das Material für Streicher arrangiert hat und auch als Mitkomponist und begleitender Solist fungiert.
Das Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart wurde von Mladen Gutesha dirigiert (der mit ECM bereits an transidiomatischen Projekten mit Keith Jarrett, Jan Garbarek und Terje Rypdal gearbeitet hatte). Produziert von Manfred Eicher, bleibt Saudades eine außergewöhnliche Reise, ein Album, das seiner Zeit voraus war
und gewissermaßen darauf wartete, von der Welt eingeholt zu werden. Diese Wiederveröffentlichung auf Vinyl in einer Klapphülle enthält neue Liner Notes mit historischem Kontext und Hintergrundinformationen.

Der US-amerikanische Gitarrist Ralph Towner nimmt seit Anfang der 70er Jahre für ECM auf und hat mit seinen Alben ein einzigartiges Gesamtwerk geschaffen. Im Mittelpunkt seines Schaffens stehen seine Soloaufnahmen, von denen die erste, Diary, vor 50 Jahren veröffentlicht wurde. At First Light setzt diese große Tradition fort und schöpft Inspiration aus einer breiten musikalischen Palette. ”Meine Soloaufnahmen haben immer auch eigene Kompositionen enthalten, in denen sich Spuren der vielen Komponisten und Musiker finden, die mich über die Jahre begeistern konnten”, schreibt Towner in dem CD-Begleittext und nennt unter anderem den Einfluss von George Gershwin, John Coltrane, John Dowland und Bill Evans:

”Ich habe das Gefühl, dass At First Light ein gutes Beispiel dafür ist, wie ich diese Vielzahl von Einflüssen in meine persönliche Musik einfließen lasse.” Neben seinen eigenen Stücken spielt Towner auch Hoagy Carmichaels ”Little Old Lady”, Jule Stynes ”Make Someone Happy” und den irischen Traditional ”Danny Boy”. At First Light wurde im Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI, Lugano, im Februar 2022 aufgenommen und von Manfred Eicher produziert.

Produced by Epektase and mixed by Sheldon himself at Winslow Studio, the project leaves a lot of room for the guitar and the rapper's 60/70s rock influences such as Bowie and the Beatles. There are also influences from Soul, R&B, Lo-Fi and Jazz, pushing the meeting of rap with other musical genres even further.

A nod to Böcklin's painting Isle of the Dead, a work of multiple interpretations that obsessed the painter himself, the island echoes feelings of isolation and solitude, but also the need to escape and introspect. We thus find the themes that haunt Sheldon: his childhood and his relationship with others, his questions about his place as a human being, which he poses head-on or through lighter notes of humour, and his dismay at a world for which he "knows the problems, not the solutions". His texts, unique and personal, reveal his most intimate thoughts. Like a conversation, they resonate within each of us and create a strong bond, a deep sense of understanding, against the backdrop of all the sweetness and melancholy of the images he conjures up: "One more day on my islet, watching the sailboats go by."

The metaphor of the islet continues in the visual universe built around the album, where the central element is a monolith used to represent isolation and emptiness. Made up of four mirrored sides, this imposing artefact represents both the island and the subject of the album: the central element is not the main subject, Sheldon, but rather what he tells us about the world around him.

The small town of Bremen in Northern Germany has a long musical tradition ever since the Brothers Grimm issued the tale of the Bremen Town Musicians. Now it is the Our Label brothers that bring you music from that very city, which was their own place to be for musical nightlife adventures: Uncle Hammond’s Soul Jazz Movement is a seven piece group honoring the groovy styles of Jimmy Smith and Reuben Wilson. This 45 features their interpretation of two of the bands' favorite tunes. "Greens" is a midtempo boogaloo-ish groove for the dancefloor and "Waltz" was an instant choice by Our Label's Gu for its deep and soulful harmonies. Bothe tracks were recorded live at the famous Studio Nord in Bremen, Germany.

Now a proud 85 years of age and enjoying retirement in America, Remi was the cornerstone of British West African music in the 50s, 60s and 70s, along with Ginger Oloronso Johnson, Fela Kuti and others. But while Ginger played mambo and cha cha cha in Soho clubland and Fela released his early ‘highlife jazz’ records on the Melodisc label, Remi Kabaka was fully ensconced in the UK Rock world, playing sessions and live shows with The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Ginger Baker, Steve Winwood and countless others.

As the 60s became the 70s, Kabaka developed yet another string to his bow: the development of a UK based West African Funk scene, that found its genesis in the legendary Osibisa, but with an influence and an inspiration that spilled over into every contemporary Brit Funk band from Cymande and the Equals to The Average White Band, Matata and beyond.

SON OF AFRICA was originally released by Chris Blackwell’s Island records in 1976, to little acclaim, very few reviews, and with almost no promotion. African music was a hard sell when the 70s Black British record market wanted reggae first and foremost, and with Bob Marley on the books, Island understandably had other priorities at the time. The record disappeared. Until it reappeared in the early 2000s, as a £700-plus collectors’ item.

It’s barely 30 minutes long. But every single minute is drenched with sinuous, spare funk: no spacey psych rock, no disco, no boogie, no over-the-top production: just 90-110 BPM grooves that go straight to the body.

So: whether you’re a turntablist, a hip hop sampler, or just an honest-to-goodness African Funk lover, catch this limited reissue (with full, updated liner notes) while you can. There won’t be another chance.

Critically acclaimed composer, producer and electronic musician Mark Barrott is set to release his new album ‘Jōhatsu (蒸発)’ in April via Reflections, the new imprint from the Anjuna family, which focuses on downtempo, ambient, and alternative releases. An artist that creatively speaking, never stops moving, Barrott’s musical career has taken many forms. From Future Loop Foundation, the alias he used to create and perform ambient drum and bass from the mid-90s, to his Sketches from an Island albums released under his own name, and as founder of the highly influential International Feel label, Barrott has spent close to four decades exploring new sonic territory and pushing the boundaries of various genres, and is considered a pivotal figure in the revival of the Balearic music scene of the last decade. Barrott’s new album, ’Jōhatsu (蒸発)’, is predictably unpredictable. Released on Reflections, the new downtempo label from the Anjuna family, it’s a full departure from anything Barrott’s written before, partly because he was writing to moving picture. Towards the end of 2019, he had been working so relentlessly as a record producer for artists such as South African DJ Themba and the late Virgil Abloh, that he developed Repetitive Strain Injury, and was forced to take time off, and it was during this down-time he received an email from a director asking him to write the score for his new documentary, ‘Jōhatsu... the art of Evaporation’. ‘Jōhatsu (蒸発)’ is an 8-track journey through the sounds, sights, smells and sensations of traditional and contemporary Japanese culture. “What came home to me during the scoring process, was how much shame is a huge part of Japanese culture. There’s a lot of shame surrounding losing your job and around things like divorce & bankruptcy, and it’s been there for centuries, since the Samurai and Bushido.” Some take their own lives, while others decide to simply… evaporate. Jōhatsu refers to these people who decide to purposely disappear, leaving their lives they knew behind without a trace.

On the flip Bodyzeit heats up on an even more old schoolish tip with breaks that definitely win the bumper car dancefloor. Very sorry for the spilt drinks, thrown fags, popped pills, ripped shirts and funny faces trying to sing along these german vocoder phrases. Borusiade doing some serious bodywork, shifting gears down in her lowrider manner, modding this burner into a dreamish but deep wee-hour masterride.

First up on side A we have that man again Stefano De Santis with Broken Fusion, a typically wonderful track pushing all the right buttons, a much darker affair than his previous three tracks for us. Following on from there we have Melchior Sultana who rounds off side A in style, where Malta meets Detroit, a peak time track for the dancefloor.

This is Melchiors third appearance on one of our Best Of Various compilations and all three are superb pieces of music. Onto side AA and Jose Rico with two tracks both superb deep journies into Detroit musical territory. Jose is joined on both by Ruben Valero, both Silence Sentences and Minimalism are must have tracks for anyone who is a fan and follows Jose’s music. Finally Caruso serve up some Latin inspired music and beats for a heavy workout.

The other reissue of Phil and Claudio is 1984's "Come Back Lover" masterfully sung and arranged by Carl Smith (BTBS-12002). Since his last outing on Control Freak with the sold-out Bunzunkunzun EP, Syz has built a reputation as one of the UKs most distinctive club producers, weaving playful, percussive techno with soundsystem-driven bass music. Releases via Shanti Celeste’s Peach Discs and more recently on Banoffee Pies have cemented his position as a rising star of the UK scene.

Much of this acclaim started with 2020’s Mindforms - a self-released mini-LP which saw the young producer step away from the dancefloor to explore an expansive sonic world, ‘balancing the tranquility of the ecological world with the immediacy of the digital one. Tropical botany meets ethereal cyberspace through a fusion of styles, influenced by UK techno, hip hop, ambient, acid, and sound-system-driven bass music’.

The original release was accompanied by a highly limited run of just 10 dubplates. “Dancing Around Fire” is the new album by LA-based drummer and composer Tommaso Cappellato in partnership with Pavimento Fertile, the Italian break dance collective founded by Paolo “Frigo” Montesi. Inspired by the energy of dance and improvisation, this album serves up a dynamic fusion of experimental soul and timeless grooves that command the body to move. This unique collaboration between dancer and musician was born out of Cappellato’s live performance at the Pavimento Fertile dance jam in 2021.

Seeing how Cappellato’s rhythms brought out new layers in the dancers’ movements inspired Montesi to commission an album of original music that celebrates the culture of drum breaks and sampling which fuel freestyle dance. The album’s seven tracks, composed by Cappellato in as many days, take the listener straight to the dance floor.

Cappellato weaves the soulful vocals of Lalin St. Juste (on “Made of Golden Light”) and Cameron Kinghorn (on “Heart to Mend”) alongside percussive electronic tracks (like “Battle Moves”) that emphasize the importance of the drum in unleashing the power of human expression.

In the furthest reaches of the cosmos, the intergalactic community gathers for the annual Kutika Limbo finals.

Reigning champion Latrec draws the first straw and the percussion rolls excitedly as he steps up to the pole. Kutika glides lithely under the bar, tentacles wobbling to the acid rhythm. He celebrates his victory as the crowd chants in a glitchy alien dialect. “Kutika-tika-tika-tika!”

Second in line, Latrec’s younger brother Dub Mix steps up for his first limbo. Shorter and stockier than his brother, we don’t know what to expect from this one. Once again the percussion rolls, the crowd gasps as his squidgy exoskeleton melts before their eyes, reforming on the other side of the bar - ‘blooooop’. The crowd goes wild “Kut-Kut!”

Next up is The W.C. Events take a strange turn as they forgo the competition, instead they walk to the stage to sweep the band aside, hijacking control of the instruments. Heavy percussive hits twist spacetime with material melting bass throbs. The crowd goes wild as the fabric of reality collapses around them.

Last but by no means least is Remotif, a techno unit resembling a giant cluster of biceps stands staring at the limbo pole, chaos erupting around him. The tempo of the percussion rises in anticipation and acid thunder roars in the background. Remotif picks up the bar, blinks, and hurls it off into the furthest reaches of the galaxy never to be seen again.

The popularity of Brazilian music from the 60s, 70s and 80s has experienced quite the renaissance; artists such as Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, Arthur Verocai, Joyce et al, have become household names to an international audience passionate about global sounds. However, even for die-hard fans and collectors of Brazilian music of the past, discovering contemporary Brazilian artists is not always easy, nor accessible. But, if you know where to look, you will see that there is a resurgence well underway that can be epitomised by an exciting new wave of Brazilian artists beginning to break through and gather momentum overseas. With Cruisin', their second album for Telephone Explosion, Toronto's Bernice distils their playful sense of composition resulting in the most affecting collection of their young career. Across fifteen tracks, a special kind of contemporary, jazz-inflected pop unfolds, miraculous for being both fun and musically adventurous, all in the name of emotional resonance. Each groove in the bassbin is matched by a little scratch at the listener's heartstrings. The album was recorded at home with Phil Melanson (Sam Gendel, Andy Shauf) and Thom Gill (Beverly Glenn-Copeland, Joseph Shabason), led by songwriter and vocalist Robin Dann (Martha Wainwright) and producer Matthew Pencer, with additional contributions from longtime members Dan Fortin and Felicity Williams (Bahamas) being captured remotely.

Throughout their eleven years as a group, working at the intersections of several scenes and spotlights (many of which begin and end at Toronto's beloved Tranzac Club), Bernice have developed an idiosyncratic musical language that feels immediately inviting and wonderfully refreshing. The group's two previous releases, Eau De Bonjourno (2021) and Puff: In The Air Without A Shape (2018) received generous nods from both Stereogum and Pitchfork, who described the music as "unusually mesmerizing". With the songcraft a little more crystalline and the vulnerability notched up, Cruisin' feels like the right record to open Bernice up to a much wider audience.

Development of the album began in Spring, 2021 during a writing retreat at the family farm in Bond Head, Ontario. Members of the band luxuriated in slow time, tinkering with lyrics and melodies, sharing meals, knitting. From this communal gathering, the concept of 'dedication' emerged as a guiding theme. Specifically, developing songs in an almost epistolary form; as love letters or check-ins for friends, community members, pets and other more elusive acquaintances (a longtime working title for the project was 'Songs For People').

Lead single 'Underneath My Toe', one of the first pieces developed under this theme, finds the group at their most graceful and direct. Beginning with songwriter/vocalist Robin Dann singing simply 'Hi / I miss you all the time', the composition proceeds to shift subtly between soft jazz balladry and low-bit funk, revelling in the intimate beauty of a long-time-no-see letter to a dear old friend.

Though being a band that so deeply values the art of fartin' around, Bernice couldn't settle on such a straightforward approach. During the creative process, a clarifying question arose: 'Can you cruise to it?'. This somewhat ambiguous aesthetic criteria became a guiding light for the album. 'Sure, it's a beautiful song about building trust with a new nonagenarian friend... but can you cruise to it?'.

Case in point, both follow up singles, 'No Effort To Exist' and 'Second Judy', fall into a more nebulous, bewildering category of song. Undoubtedly affecting, emotionally charged, existentially searching, yet also undeniably juicy. Drum patterns skitter into place while synth tones shift on a dime to meet thematic twists. There's errant whistling and curious overdubs. Then in come elegant backing vocals, elevating the narrative while an unlikely, left-field groove is established. Miraculously, the listener is not just moved, but Cruisin'.

Therein lies the marvel of Bernice: they remind us that the rec room funk of Mario Kart 64 need not exist in mutual exclusivity to a rich tapestry of human emotions. Even as we live through this most cursed timeline, we can look into the heart of things, dwell on the challenges we're called to witness, and find a little levity to carry us through; grab a lil' mushroom and cruise the existential soup.

Exceptionally talented keyboardist, DJ and producer Moon Boots (Peter Dougherty) has revealed his third studio album ‘Ride Away’. The ten-track LP will land on March 17th on Anjunadeep. The first single, ‘Hot Minute’ featuring Black Gatsby, is out today. Written and produced over a nearly two-year period beginning in early 2021, ‘Ride Away’ contains themes of love, companionship, and personal exploration. Hauling in a crate’s worth of musical influences, Moon Boots has imbued ‘Ride Away’ with his characteristic blend of soul, disco, and house music, whilst also introducing the sounds of synthpop, breakbeats, and psychedelica. Marrying these eclectic styles is part and parcel of Moon Boots idiosyncratic sensibility, honed through years of living and DJing in Chicago, the birthplace of house music, and in the musical melting pot of Brooklyn. ‘Hot Minute’ is the first single and features the vocals of longtime collaborator Black Gatsby. With a sassy chorus that echoes Anderson Paak and Sylvester with a gospel-inflected breakdown, ‘Hot Minute’ shows off the full range of Black Gatsby’s talents and his unique musical rapport with Moon Boots. This bop is a tantalising taste of what Dougherty has been up to in the studio. ‘Hot Minute’ follows the recent release of ‘Come Back Around’ which featured indie darling Cherry Glazerr. The summer anthem was supported by the likes of KCRW, Triple J, and SiriusXM. ‘Ride Away’ follows in the footsteps of Moon Boots’s debut ‘First Landing’ (2017) and sophomore album ‘Bimini Road’ (2019). With an impressive catalogue atypical of the dance world, Dougherty’s third album represents both his tenacity and evolution as a producer and songwriter.

Featuring a swathe of colourful vocalists including the likes of Cherry Glazerr, Dope Earth Alien, and Nic Hanson, ‘Ride Away’ celebrates Dougherty’s longstanding affinity for collaboration, fun effervescent songwriting, and dance-focused production. Other international artists on the album include French singer Praa and Norwegian band Ora The Molecule, whilst longtime collaborators Ross Clark (St. Lucia) and Steven Klavier feature as writers and instrumentalists on the record, rounding out a global ensemble of incredible talent. Having accrued well over 100 million streams on Spotify alone, and having been championed by the likes of Annie Mac, Diplo, Danny Howard, and The Blessed Madonna, Moon Boots has established himself as a trailblazer of R&B-infused dance music.

Legendary 7X GRAMMY and Emmy Award-winning artist/producer Dr. Dre celebrates the 30th anniversary of his magnum opus, The Chronic by announcing the album will be re-released. The Chronic, which is not currently available on streaming services, will again be available to fans on all major DSPs .

The Chronic topped the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart for eight weeks, while "Nuthin’ But a "G" Thang" hit No. 1 for two weeks on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. Last June, Rolling Stone placed The Chronic on its 500 Greatest Albums of All-Time List, boasting how the album "redefined the West Coast Hip Hop sound." Last year, Dr. Dre dazzled during the Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show in Los Angeles. His enormous set was star-studded, as Dre performed alongside some of music's biggest stars, including Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, and 50 Cent. Dre commanded the stage – just a few miles from his birthplace of Compton – with a groundbreaking setlist anchored by hits such as "The Next Episode" and the 2Pac-led "California Love." The historic performance earned Dr. Dre his first-ever Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special (Live). The Hollywood Reporter called the halftime show "thrilling and nostalgic," while Billboard credited Dre for his "seismic impact" on music.

Von seinen Mannequinfreunden und der Liebe zu deutscher elektronischer Musik der letzten Jahrzehnte inspiriert, produziert Rainer Buchmüller unter dem Namen „Fred und Luna“ moderne musikalische Abenteuerreisen mit einer Kombination aus sich wiederholenden Beats, elektronischen Klanglandschaften und Elementen der Krautrock-Ära. Oder wie er es wahlweise nennt: Elektrokraut beziehungsweise Krautelektro.

Unterwegs mit Fred und Luna (Das Luna-Prinzip)
Weil die beiden Mannequins Fred und Luna ihr Modehaus nie verlassen, übernimmt Rainer Buchmüller unter dem Pseudonym Sugar Ray Buckmiller bei Liveshows die Rolle von FRED.
LUNA hingegen erfindet sich von Konzert zu Konzert neu und wird von einem oder mehreren kurzfristig ausgewählten, wechselnden Musikern vertreten. So wird jeder Auftritt zu einem überraschenden und einmaligen Ereignis für das Publikum und die Musiker selbst.
