When funk music exploded onto the global pop scene in the late sixties, many of Jamaica's leading music-makers were inspired to incorporate elements of the exciting sound into their work. The result was the fascinating and compelling funky reggae style that proved immensely popular with record buyers on both sides of the Atlantic throughout the early ‘70s.

Pioneers of the sound included such celebrated producers as Lee ’Scratch’ Perry and Lloyd Charmers, whose recordings are heavily represented on both the CD and LP versions of this irresistible collection.

Collected here are some of the finest examples of the funky reggae, performed by some of reggae music’s most accomplished artists, from Ken Boothe and Lee Perry’s Upsetters to British-based acts, Greyhound and The Marvels.

Nick Bike rides again with a new trip out on his Chosen Spokes label, and as always, these are on the money mixes for dub disco heads. 'Kiss Me Say It' is devilishly slow and purposeful with rotation dub and funky bass riffs rising and falling to irresistible effect. The strings bring sophistication and the chords a golden charm that swells the heart. The groove feels ever on the rise but never boils over. The flipside dub is even more focused, with the diva vocal doused in echo for a spaced out vibe. Pure perfection.

Crave Tapes strikes back with its second vinyl release. Felt Her Knife – an ode to romanticism and betrayal, portrayed by the Greek artist George Core McCall, known as Alpha Sect.
This 6-track EP opens with an invitation to take a step back in time, with a charming introductory descent, like the opening of a post-rock album. A melancholy cry, "Felt Her Knife", follows our journey into the psyche of this EP, driven by Alpha Sect’s sentimental but powerful vocals. "Drowning" merges the boundaries of what is real and what is lost in an ocean of despair. Not all those who wander are lost, and the "Fight in the Light" shows, with its powerful rhythms, that our guidance is within us. The call is stronger than we
sometimes think.
The vinyl is completed with beautiful remixes by the Swedish synthwave legend Tobias Bernstrup and Radondo from Slow Motion Records, adding an extra touch of “dancefloor-oriented” hopelessness and melancholia. Have you felt her knife yet?

■ Human is a deeply “human” cover album by Gota Nishidera (NONA REEVES), focusing on the world of 80s–90s Japanese kayokyoku and new music.
Following his well received 2023 solo cover album Sunset Rain, this new release features an unprecedentedly wide ranging selection of songs spanning works
by Kyohei Tsutsumi, Reiko Yugawa, and Eiichi Ohtaki, all of whom Nishidera either learned from directly or profoundly respects for their devotion to the study and
practice of pop music.

■ After experiencing major success across Asia including two China tours with NONA REEVES and solo performances in Taiwan Gota Nishidera revisited the essence
of Japanese pop music from a renewed perspective. The result is a meticulously crafted collection of eight ultimate tracks, tightly packed with the charm of Japanese
pop. Born in 1973, Nishidera absorbed the new wave of Japanese music that began in 1980 in real time, and here he updates that experience for the present day.
With arrangements and vocals filled with deep affection for the originals, he offers a modern and fresh reinterpretation of these classics.

■ The album is produced by long time collaborators Yuzuru Tomita, Tomoya Yamagata, and rising talent Yudai Ohi. On the track “Woman (from W’s Tragedy)”,
Nishidera performs a duet with Megumi Mashiro of Hicksville, a vocalist he has worked with for many years on NONA REEVES recordings and live shows.

■ Mastering is handled by ambient/balearic maestro Calm, delivering a stunning final sound.

■ The jacket design is created by Keita Fukumi, producer of the YouTube channel Gota Nishidera Channel NGC. Shot at Nishidera’s local barbershop in Sangenjaya
during his usual haircut, the artwork vividly captures the “human” essence at the heart of this project."

This expanded edition presents the soundtrack with previously unreleased material not included on the original vinyl release, offering a more complete overview of Micalizzi’s work. The package is further enhanced by an 8-page full-color booklet featuring original artwork, extensive liner notes on the film, direction, and score by journalist Fabio Babini, as well as a personal contribution from Franco Micalizzi himself.

Composed by Maestro Franco Micalizzi for the cult 1984 film Non C’è Due Senza Quattro, starring the iconic duo Bud Spencer & Terence Hill in a rare fourfold role, this soundtrack captures the playful spirit and global flair of the film.

Micalizzi delivers a vibrant and rhythm-driven score, infused with warm Latin influences, breezy melodies, and an unmistakable sense of lightness. The result is a richly entertaining listening experience that perfectly mirrors the film’s humor, energy, and escapist charm.

Toronto’s Ducks Ltd. (formerly Ducks Unlimited), the bright jangle-pop duo of Tom McGreevy (lead vocal, guitar, bass, keyboards) and Evan Lewis (guitar, bass, drum programming), accomplish the impossible. The pair craft songs that play to very specific inspirations without drowning underneath them—immediately evidenced on their critically acclaimed EP, Get Bleak, and sharpened on Modern Fiction, their debut LP. “The Servants, The Clean, The Chills, The Bats, Television Personalities, Felt,” Evan rattles off. “Look Blue Go Purple is one I reference a lot with our production.” Echoes of ‘80s indiepop abound, but they never overwhelm. This is not a nostalgic record, after all, nor is it a derivative one. Instead, across 10 cheery-sounding songs, Ducks Ltd. explore contemporary society in decline, examining large scale human disaster through personal turmoil (hence the title, taken from a university course called Gnosticism and Nihilism in Modern Fiction, influenced by Graham Greene novels. Bookish indie fans, look no further.)

Writing the album was intimate. Tom drafted the nucleus of a song on an unplugged electric guitar and brought it over to Evan’s apartment, where the pair sat in his bedroom, placing percussive beats from a drum machine under nascent melodies, passing a bass back and forth, adding organs and bridges where necessary. “It’s computer music trying extremely hard not to sound like computer music,” Tom jokes. Fearful that limited and expensive studio time would kneecap the project creatively, eroding their charming naivete, the pair re-recorded the album in a storage space owned by Evan’s boss. Ornamentation through collaboration followed: there’s Aaron Goldstein on Pedal Steel in the Go-Betweens’ “Cattle and Cane”-channeling interlude “Patience Wearing Thin,” Eliza Niemi on cello (“18 Cigarettes,” a song loosely inspired by a 1997 Oasis performance of “Don’t Go Away”), and backing harmonies from Carpark labelmates The Beths (on an ode to friendship at a distance, “How Lonely Are You?,” “Always There,” and on the sped-up Syd Barrett stylings of “Under The Rolling Moon.”) While in his native Australia due to covid-19, Evan worked closely with producer James Cecil (The Goon Sax, Architecture in Helsinki) on Modern Fiction’s finishing touches—at one point, in the mountains of the Macedon Ranges in Victoria, recorded a string quartet (featured on “Fit to Burst,” “Always There,” “Sullen Leering Hope,” “Twere Ever Thus,” “Grand Final Day.”)

It’s danceable, depressive fun, with some relief: in “Always There” and “Sullen Leering Hope,” Modern Fiction’s faithful heart. “There’s a tendency in my writing, because of my world view, to be very bleak.” Tom explains. “A quality I don’t always see in myself and really appreciate in others is the courage to go on.” And yet, the record manages resiliency—enough for pop fans to fall in love with.

A few years ago I issued the soundtrack to Virgin Witch, the score to an underground 1971
kinky British London / posh stately home horror that seemed more like an excuse to show as
many racy cars and devilish nude scenes as possible. This fleapit film was written by Hazel
Adair - the writer of legendary long-running TV series Crossroads, and her business partner at
the time Ken Walton (yes, the wrestling commentator). Virgin Witch was cheap and successful
enough to allow the whole team another go at the sexploitation game through their newly
formed production company Pyramid Films. Sex Clinic was the quick follow up; I say Sex Clinic,
the initial cinematic title was Clinic Xclusive, which was also called With These Hands, which
was also called La Masseuse Perverse. This film also came out in 1971 and they used the
musical services of Ted Dicks once again. Dicks had originally met Adair in 1960 through a cast
member performing in his first musical, Look Who’s Here.

If you are not aware of the great Ted Dicks, his quick bio reads as follows: born London 1928,
was educated through both grammar and art school and after National Service flirted with both
art and music. He worked with a series of very talented song writers - including Barry Cryer -
finally sparking properly with writer Myles Rudge. Together “Dicks and Rudge” had a hit with
their musical And Another Thing which starred Lionel Blair and Bernard Cribbins. Their talents
were spotted by producer George Martin and they followed this show success up with a series
of truly classic novelty pop chart hits, again with Cribbins - “Hole In The Ground” and “Right Said
Fred”. If you are not aware of the classic A Combination Of Cribbins LP they wrote, go and find
it. It includes “Gossip Calypso”, a triumph of novelty song writing that somehow manages to
squeeze in the lyric “Oxy-aceteline welder”, and is possibly the only song ever to do so. They
wrote further hits (winning an Ivor Novello for “A Windmill In Old Amsterdam”) and were in
constant demand throughout the 1960s and 1970s, working with artists such as Petula Clark,
Matt Munro, Bruce Forsyth, Topol and Kenneth Williams.

By the late 1960s Ted had also penned a handful of instrumental library cues including the
classic “Busy Boy” for the Standard Library company that got picked up as the theme for the
brilliant TV kids fantasy show Catweazle in 1970. It’s a light, kooky, hummable tune that lodged
its way deep in the mind of any child under 12 over the following decade.

When I first got the reels for Sex Clinic I’m not sure what I was sonically expecting - much of
Dicks’ music blends musical hall with jazz and some brilliant novelty - and maybe I was also
imagining a different kind of film to the one that was actually made. Turns out Sex Clinic is more
like a sleazy drama than an erotic adventure - I’ve read reviews that call it “nothing more than a
naked Crossroads”. Even knowing this I had no idea what the music was going to sound like. So
I was thrilled when it was almost the musical opposite of what I imagined. We have here a great,
easy jazz score. Not a proggy, wild or free jazz score, this is lightish, vibes-led, bluesy and really
charming, which gets slightly more lively when the naked pool party sequence kicks off, and
drifts effortlessly into more seductive midnight moods as and when required. And having now
seen the film, musically it’s unusually at odds with the on screen nudity, blackmail and revenge.

But like most of Ted’s work, the music sticks in your mind. Unlike the film. Which I suggest you
try and avoid unless you like watching plump randy middle aged men with terrible hair pursue
women half their age.

Sie machen keine großen Worte, hampeln nicht 24/7 auf allen Social-Media-Kanälen herum, verzichten auf Werbung und große Worte jeglicher Art und spielen nicht wahllos an jeder Steckdose. Eigentlich ein Unding in der heutigen Zeit. Geschäftsschädigung in eigener Sache, quasi. Und dennoch ist die im Jahr 2009 gegründete Formation aus Tübingen mit jedem ihrer immer stoisch und schlicht mit dem Bandnamen betitelten Alben stets aufs Neue in vieler Munde, genießt mindestens Respekt, bei etlichen Fans gar unantastbaren Kultstatus - und das nicht nur innerhalb der Punk(Rock)-Basis, sondern auch bis tief in die Alterna- und Metalszene hinein. Große Riffs - mal episch, mal punkruppig, mal schmissig, und so gut wie immer nackenbrechend - und der zuweilen zweistimmige Gesang sind die Kerntrademarks des Vierers, dazu spartanische, aufs Bitternötigste reduzierte englische Lyrics sowie ein magnetisierender Groove, für den unzählige andere Musiker töten würden: HYSTERESE at it's very best. Auch mit Album Nummer fünf pflügen HYSTERESE durch eure Herzen. Wie nicht anders zu erwarten, walzt das Quartett seinen schwermütigen Punk-Rock in die nächste Metamorphose. Die riesigen Melodien sind getragen von krachigen Breitwand-Gitarren, mal Shoegaze, mal 80s Rockismus, zeitlos und integer. Und hat da jemand tatsächlich Manilla Road gesagt?

Wer sich Drunks Debütalbum ,A Derby Spiritual" aus dem Jahr 1996 noch einmal anhört, wird feststellen, dass es charmanter, sanfter und - wenn ich das so sagen darf - farbenfroher ist, als es sein stoischer Slow-Core-Ruf aus den 90ern vermuten lässt. Und man könnte sogar bemerken, dass Rick Alversons Stimme einen bisher ungeahnten, von Niederlagen gezeichneten Tom-Petty-Singsang aufweist. Der Sound der Band aus Richmond ist zweifellos zurückhaltend, knarrend und karg. Doch die Jahrzehnte haben diesem alten, traurigen Kerl einen wärmenden bernsteinfarbenen Schimmer verliehen. Das Black-Hole-Radio-Stück am Ende des atemberaubenden Openers ,Collarbone" scheint das Kommen von ,Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" vorherzusagen. Und hier in der seltsamen Gegenwart könnten Stücke wie ,Germany Skies", ,Gideon's Trumpet" und ,Gizmo" nahtlos in den heutigen Indie-Country-Boom eingefügt werden. Der seltsame Walzer aus Akkordeon und Geige in Stücken wie ,Indeliberate Matrimony" und ,Coming Home" klingt - wage ich es noch einmal zu sagen - wie Mellencamp aus der ,The Lonesome Jubilee"-Ära am Boden eines Fasses Schnaps. Alversons Lyrik schwankt zwischen dem hoffnungsvollen Nihilismus seines zeitgenössischen Songwriter- und Dichterkollegen aus Virginia, David Berman, und dem tiefgründigen Post-Beat-Minimalismus von Robert Creeley. Ich schwöre, wenn er in dem hoch-und-einsamen, von der Mundharmonika getragenen ,Window Sill" seufzt: ,I feel willy-nill/I pissed upon your window sill", klingt das im Lenderman'schen Sinne des Wortes verdammt romantisch. Im Rahmen des 30-jährigen Jubiläums von Jagjaguwar wird ,A Derby Spiritual", Jags zweite Veröffentlichung überhaupt, zum ersten Mal auf Vinyl gepresst. Ein drei Jahrzehnte langes Unrecht wird endlich wiedergutgemacht. Les Rallizes Dénudés returns with Disque 4 -’76 Studio et Live-, the latest in the ongoing series of official archival releases from the celebrated Japanese underground band.

In 1991, Les Rallizes Dénudés released what would become the only official albums issued during the band’s lifetime: ’67-’69 STUDIO et LIVE, MIZUTANI / Les Rallizes Dénudés, and ’77 LIVE. What no one knew at the time was that Takashi Mizutani was already deep into preparing another record.

Disque 4 reconstructs the track list Mizutani had put together for that fourth album. This includes the single “White Awakening," recorded in 1976 at the studio in Takadanobaba BIG BOX as part of the sessions that would become known among collectors as the “Virgin Demos.” Production and mastering of this archival release were handled once again by Makoto Kubota, assembling the album from the masters left behind by Mizutani, utilizing newly discovered tapes as additional sources.

Prepared by Mizutani using a variety of formats, including U-Matic, open reel, and DAT, the tracks were originally labeled with working titles such as “Disque 4” and “Record No. 4,” indicating that Mizutani intended them for inclusion on a possible fourth album. The recordings were taken primarily from studio sessions that all seemed to have taken place around 1976, which aligns with the claim that Mizutani himself once made that “there exists an album of studio recordings made with the same members as ‘77 LIVE.” His notes also suggest an attempt to sequence the tracks as a vinyl LP, splitting them into A and B sides. It's not hard to imagine that in the era of CDs in the early 1990s, an album on analog LP would have been an extremely difficult sell. Thus, the “Fourth Album” had become another lost piece of the intricate Rallizes myth.

Les Rallizes Dénudés may be notorious for the colossal volume and extended song lengths in their live settings. But this work, centered around studio recordings and condensed onto a single LP record, transcends the common impression of the band’s aggressive flood of noise. Instead, the “lyricism” at its core emerges with striking clarity. And needless to say, this is precisely the charm of the Rallizes that continues to captivate fans worldwide today.

**ON RANDOM COLOUR VINYL** PRIMITIVE RING consists of Bert Hoover (bass/vocals), Charles Moothart (guitar/vocals), and Jon Modaff (drums). The Los Angeles power trio formed in September 2024 when Hoover and Moothart came together seeking a new creative outlet. In 2025, the band released four 7"s on four different labels (Greenway, In the Red, Reverberation Appreciation Society, and Fuzz Club UK). They hauled amps and drums into bars to hone the sound of the newfound brotherhood that is Primitive Ring. Rock and roll is in its essence a primal experience, and the name reflects that. Three individuals collide and egos rattle, shedding layers and growing new limbs. Archetypes flash to the rhythm of a freight train and the crown is passed hand to hand like a good luck charm, symbolic and communal. Another Country is the fifth full-length album by Cindy, the San Francisco-based group built around the songwriting of Karina Gill. Recorded, like all of its predecessors, in their hometown and with a consistent line-up held over from their previous record (the Swan Lake EP from 2024), it is replete with the poetry of private vistas, eavesdropped dramas and confusing winds. These are classic Cindy concerns, and yet, as always, contain new mystery and charm to somehow feel like quiet revelations each time. Another Country is both opaque in its intentions and specific in its presentation, and as such presents the kind of truth that keeps the listener on the search for answers just out of reach.
"The title of this record, Another Country, refers to the James Baldwin novel of that name. The book has a kind of drama that makes sense to me. When I look around, the obvious explanations are not enough. The miasma of feelings and ideas that is supposed to account for it all, doesn't. Baldwin washes past that to longings that begin to explain. Cindy songs come out of the x-rays my particular brain makes out of what I see and experience. What you hear on this record is the result of collaboration with the members of Cindy that transforms that shadowy thing into full color, fully fleshed. Each of them, in music, is sure-footed and unblinking, and making this record together felt like, yes, yes, you see what I mean."

Upon appearing out of nowhere back in ‘24, the quartet’s debut registered (feverishly) somewhere
between immediacy & beguilement, the intervening year & change doing little to dull its aura, the
mystique only heightened by their suitably gorgeous appearance in wonderful company on a colourful
storm’s recent ‘going back to sleep…’ compilation-extravaganza. The conceit of these four tracks here is
disarmingly minimal - repetitious loner guitar strummage, oblique vox poetics as lullaby, intermittent
sunken percussion, bass the subtle melodic lugger - all recurring/revolving in delicious pirouette freefall,
un-rinseable within the mind, wayward melodies stuck like heat-warped treacle.

As with the firmest of its diy domestica ilk, there’s something ever so slightly off here, the carnivalesque
nature of this thing being the ‘what?’ that keeps pulling you in. parched ennui drip, fully zonked bacchanal
(anti-)energetics, listlessness rendered bedsit anthem, cooees in the hallway. depending on how your
head is screwed, ‘correct’ or otherwise, one might hear a charmed take on a vein of folk song fallen well
by the wayside/behind the mantle, others a seance for the spirits in the kettle, others more attuned to the
myriad wraiths swirling within the outer reaches of these songs, flights of whimsy foiled by a sticky, gluey
something or other. choose, or rather submit to your own adventure. Miaow miaow miaow.

Durch die analogen Sounds und teils surfigen Gitarrenklänge gewinnt "Cheers" an Wärme und transportiert einen unterschwelligen 60er-Jahre-Charme. The album was greeted with widespread acclaim in 2019 with many reviewers declaring it his best yet. Glatte 9 Jahre nach 20 Last Century brettert "Future Is Calling" straighter und direkter, aggressiver als je gehört - I know, das liest man bei jeder neuen Platte, aber hier stimmt es ausnahmsweise mal. Im Ernst, das neue Zeug klingt in keinster Weise angestaubt oder so, als wäre es schon das 100. Mal wieder aufgewärmt - im Gegenteil: Toxic Shock hat die kleine Pause der letzten Jahre offensichtlich gutgetan und ordentlich Fuel in den Motor geschüttet. Hier passt alles - die Gitarren sind super aufeinander abgestimmt, das Drumming ist tight und vor allem Wally, der Sänger, hat einen fetten Sprung in die A-Liga der Shouter geschafft. Aber klar - Toxic Shock erfinden das Crossover-Thrash-Game nicht neu, im Gegenteil, sie zollen den Großen des Genres Tribut! Klar, Excel, Suicidal Tendencies, Testament - das sind die Referenzen. Gleichzeitig merkt man die Hardcore/Punk-Wurzeln der fünf - nicht zuletzt durch das überaus passende und gelungene Cover von The Gun Club. Und fun fact - bei dem Gun Club-Song klingen Toxic Shock stellenweise wie Lee Hollis zu seinen besten Spermbirds-Zeiten! Was "Future Is Calling" aber wirklich auszeichnet, ist diese rohe, ungebremste Energie, die trotzdem nie ins Chaos kippt. Die Songs sind kompakt, kommen schnell auf den Punkt und haben trotzdem genug Hooks, um im Ohr zu bleiben. Kein unnötiger Schnickschnack, kein selbstverliebtes Gefrickel - einfach ehrlicher, wuchtiger Crossover mit Haltung. Genau so muss das 2020er-Thrash-Revival klingen. Moshpit-Garantie inklusive.
