Eine zuversichtliche Grundstimmung durchzieht das fünfte Studioalbum von Penguin Cafe, Rain Before Seven…, wobei es sich keinesfalls um jenen extrem selbstbewussten, fast schon prahlerischen Optimismus handelt, sondern eher um so eine auf bescheidene Art hoffnungsvolle Grundhaltung, die man den Menschen auf der Insel ja häufiger nachsagt. Auch wenn alle Anzeichen das Gegenteil behaupten, spürt man hier sofort diese Gewissheit, dass sich alles doch noch irgendwie zum Guten wenden wird. Vermutlich zumindest.

Der Titel des Albums geht auf eine alte Bauernregel zurück, wobei die gereimte Vorhersage – „… fine before eleven“: ab 11 Uhr also wieder alles klar – auf ein baldiges gutes Ende hindeutet, vollkommen unabhängig davon, was die Wissenschaft sagt: „Ich habe diesen Spruch in einem Buch entdeckt. Davor hatte ich ihn noch nie gehört“, erzählt Arthur Jeffes, der Kopf von Penguin Cafe. „Er hat so einen dezent optimistischen Beigeschmack, und das gefällt mir sehr. Man verwendet ihn heutzutage kaum noch, aber der Reim beschreibt tatsächlich Wetterphänomene in England, die vom Atlantik aus über die Insel ziehen.“

Angefangen beim leinwandgroßen und schwärmerischen Eröffnungstitel „Welcome to London“, der mit einem Augenzwinkern auf Morricone anspielt, bis hin zum „Goldfinch Yodel“, jenem „Maibaum-Banger“ (um es mit Arthurs Worten zu sagen), mit dem das neue Album ausklingt, zieht sich ein angenehmes Gefühl von Leichtigkeit und Lebensmut durch den Longplayer, unterfüttert mit der Ausgelassenheit exotischer Rhythmen. Alles wirkt spielerisch und verspielt, und selbst der Titel ist eine Anspielung – auf A Matter of Life… aus dem Jahr 2011, der letzten Veröffentlichung, deren Titel in eine Ellipse mündete Jenes Debütalbum von Penguin Cafe diente einst als Bindeglied und Brücke – zwischen dem legendären Penguin Cafe Orchestra, das einst Arthurs Vater Simon Jeffes leitete, und dem gefeierten Nachfolger, als dessen Mastermind seither Arthur verantwortlich zeichnet.

„Ich glaube, das wirklich Neue an seinem Ansatz bestand darin, spannende und schräge Ideen zu nehmen – und dann seltsame Dinge damit anzustellen“, meint Arthur, „dabei aber konstant im Blick zu haben, dass es hinterher auch schön klingt und emotional ansprechend bleibt.“ Dieses Ethos lebt weiter in der Musik von Penguin Cafe: „Dazu haben wir uns entschlossen, als ich daran anknüpfte, schließlich spielen wir die Sachen meines Vaters und machen dazu auch neue Musik, die im selben Klanguniversum angesiedelt ist. Das bedeutet, dass ich gewissermaßen moralisch dazu verpflichtet bin, den ursprünglichen roten Faden im Auge zu behalten – und dafür zu sorgen, dass wir nicht plötzlich in Richtung Thrash-Metal abbiegen.“

Dennoch waren die rhythmischen Elemente, die zum Teil sogar an elektronische Sounds erinnern, noch nie so präsent und tonangebend wie auf Rain Before Seven…, was durchaus auch dem Co-Produzenten Robert Raths geschuldet ist. „Find Your Feet“ etwa hat ein Beat-Fundament, das weit über einen bloßen Pulsschlag hinausgeht. Abgemischt von Tom Chichester-Clark, blitzt an Stellen wie diesen etwas auf, das Arthur selbst als „fast schon elektronischen Vibe“ bezeichnet, um dann ganz aufgeregt zu ergänzen: „Es geht vor allem auch einfach ums Spaßhaben, was auf den letzten drei Alben nicht so zu hören war.” Extrem ausgelassen klingt auch „In Re Budd“, das dem verstorbenen Ambient-Urgestein Harold Budd gewidmet ist. Arthur erfuhr von dessen Tod an jenem Tag, als er diesen feierlichen Ohrwurm komponierte, dessen Synkopen deutlich komplexer sind, als sie auf den ersten Blick wirken. Auf einem präparierten Klavier gespielt, wobei die Filzstücke dem Track zusätzlichen Bounce verleihen, setzt Jeffes hier auf einen Afro Cuban Cafe-Vibe – was wunderbar zum widerspenstigen Geist des verstorbenen Budd passt.

Und schließlich wäre da noch das bereits erwähnte „Welcome to London“, das seinen Titel erhielt, als sich die Welt gerade wieder zu öffnen begann und die Menschen auch wieder Fernreisen antreten durften. Jeffes, der somit nach langer Zeit endlich wieder einen Fuß auf britischen Boden setzen konnte, war sofort beeindruckt von filmischen Soundtrack-Qualitäten (à la John Barry) dieses Stücks, als er mit dem Taxi von Heathrow nach West-London fuhr und zur Musik die opulente, in Dämmerungslicht getauchte Metropolenkulisse auf sich wirken ließ. Hier kann man deutlich die eingangs erwähnte Zuversicht raushören – und dazu vielleicht auch einen Hauch von bissiger Ironie: „Robert Raths hat der Sache noch eine Nuance hinzugefügt, die ich interessant finde, weil doch so viele Londoner ursprünglich gar nicht aus London stammen. Man schlägt also in London als Zugezogener auf, man weiß noch nicht, zu welchem Lager man sich zugehörig fühlen soll, und dann wird man auf der Straße überfallen und ausgeraubt – und in dem Licht betrachtet, hat dieses ‘Welcome to London’ doch einen eher sarkastischen Beigeschmack.“

Es überrascht nicht, dass der Schlüssel zur Zündung der Band nach der dunklen Pandemiezeit in Form einer Liveshow kam, als sie als Headliner des Download Festival Pilot vor 10.000 Fans auftraten. Während in den zwei Jahren zuvor kein einziges neues Wort aus der Feder von Leadsänger und Keyboarder Rou Reynolds geflossen war, wurde eine Erkenntnis geboren, die die siebte LP der Band prägen sollte: 'Ich hatte einfach nicht erkannt, dass die menschliche und physische Verbindung zu anderen Menschen so zentral für mein Schreiben ist', sagt er. Enter Shikari sind nicht nur vier Menschen - es sind Hunderttausende. Während die erste Single '(pls) set me on fire' die nächste Stufe in der Entwicklung der Band einläutet, kommen die ersten Worte von Enter Shikari 2.0 nicht als Frage, sondern als Befehl: 'Bitte zünde mich an'. Entfache den Funken in uns und lass uns frei werden. Dies mag eine neue Enter Shikari sein, aber sie haben nichts von ihrem Gespür für kühne Eröffnungsgambits verloren.

Im Frühjahr 2022 zog sich die Band in ein verfallenes Bauernhaus an der Küste zurück, um ihr Studio-Setup neu aufzubauen und den neuen Schwung auf Platte zu bannen. Reynolds fährt fort: "Zurück zu den Grundlagen. Diese Band - meine besten Freunde - versammelten sich in einem alten Bauernhaus, meilenweit von allem entfernt. Vom Netz getrennt und bereit, uns selbst neu zu entdecken. Dieses Album wird von der Sonne angetrieben, dem mächtigsten Objekt in unserem Sonnensystem. Und ich denke, das merkt man auch. Es ist eine Sammlung von Songs, die eine explosive Wiedervereinigung mit dem darstellen, was Enter Shikari ist. Der Beginn unseres zweiten Aktes'.

"Ich muss sagen, dass ich dies für den großen vergessenen Zyklus der Klaviermusik des 19. Jahrhunderts halte. Vielleicht sind das große Worte, aber ich empfinde das so", sagt der Pianist Leif Ove Andsnes über seine neueste Veröffentlichung bei Sony Classical. Auf diesem Album präsentiert er die umfangreichste Klaviersammlung des großen romantischen Komponisten Antonín Dvorák - die zu Unrecht vernachlässigten Poetischen Tonbilder. Dem norwegischen Pianisten zufolge zeigen diese unentdeckten Perlen eine ganz andere Seite des für seine Sinfonien und Streichquartette bekannten Komponisten. Ich liebe diese Musik und niemand scheint sie zu spielen", sagt Andsnes, der sich 2017 mit der Veröffentlichung "Sibelius" auch für die selten gespielten Klavierwerke von Jean Sibelius einsetzte. Die 13 Postkarten für Klavier, aus denen sich Dvoráks poetische Tonbilder zusammensetzen, wurden im Frühjahr 1889 geschrieben und signalisieren eine Stilverschiebung von einem Komponisten, der sich von formalen Konstruktionen weg zu einer freieren, inspirierten Ästhetik bewegt. Zu diesen bezaubernden Stücken gehören Beschwörungen von Magie und Geheimnissen ("Das alte Schloss"), ländliche Tänze ("Furiant" und "Bauernballade"), nostalgische Stimmungsstücke ("Dämmerungsweg") und tragische Reminiszenzen ("Am Grab eines Helden"). Die Werke reichen von tiefgründig bis verspielt, von heiter bis wütend - "ich spüre in ihnen eine sehr starke, wunderbare Erzählung", sagt Leif Ove Andsnes, der fest daran glaubt, dass Dvorák die Stücke dieses "außergewöhnlichen" Sets als einen Zyklus konzipiert hat, der zusammen gespielt werden soll.Sur son nouvel album, Leif Ove Andsnes présente la plus importante collection pour piano du grand compositeur romantique Antonín Dvorák - les Poetic Tone Pictures, injustement négligés. Les oeuvres vont de la profondeur à l'espièglerie, de la légèreté à la fureur - « Je sens en elles un récit très fort et merveilleux », dit Leif Ove Andsnes, qui croit fermement que Dvorák a conçu les pièces de cet ensemble « exceptionnel » comme un seul cycle à jouer d'un coup. L'un des pianistes les plus éminents du monde, Andsnes a eu l'idée de jouer de la musique tchèque lorsqu'un nouveau professeur est arrivé de Prague à son conservatoire de Bergen, en Norvège. Alors âgé de 12 ans, son énorme fascination pour les Tableaux de tons poétiques l'a conduit à présenter une partie du répertoire lors d'un concours pour jeunes pianistes. Des années plus tard, alors que la pandémie de Covid-19 frappait le monde, Andsnes a profité de ce temps d'arrêt pour se plonger plus profondément dans les tableaux de tons poétiques et communier avec leurs histoires. Il a trouvé des oeuvres d'un charme infaillible et de nombreux exemples de Dvorák déployant une largeur de couleur orchestrale à partir du piano - en plus de son utilisation excitante de rythmes croisés et de syncopes, à la manière des danses folkloriques tchèques.

For her forthcoming album Colour My Life, Heather Small, has teamed up with award-winning producer Rupert Christie and the London Metropolitan Orchestra to reimagine all of her Top 10 hits from both her career with M People as well as her solo material. There's also brand new music, in the form of the beautiful rendition of Paul Weller’s ‘You Do Something To Me’ to her super catchy uptempo lead single ‘Love Me or Not’

Heather Small, one of the most distinctive British female vocalists began her pop career as a teenager in Hot House, before becoming the voice of M People, one of the world's biggest dance acts which went on to sell tens of millions of albums worldwide, winning numerous Brits and a Mercury along the way. She launched her solo career at the turn of the millennium with Proud, which has gone on to be a timeless classic for all ages, featuring in theme songs for The Oprah Winfrey Show, Queer As Folk as well as performing at London’s 2012 Olympics.

The new album features orchestral versions of all of the UK Top 10 hits; Moving on Up, How Can I Love You More, Search For The Hero, One Night in Heaven, Don’t Look Any Further as well as the title track Colour My Life.

In keeping with the album title, there will be bright bold creative content to launch the album pre-order campaign and new single on the 19th of April. The video for the lead single ‘Love Me or Not’ will drop mid-May. Throughout the pre-order campaign, Heather will be doing select pieces of promo, such as the 2 hr radio special ‘Moving on Up’ on Bauer and performing live at numerous British Festivals, such as The Isle of Wight Festival (Broadcast on Sky Arts) Around the July release date there will be TV/Radio performances as well as a digital and social media campaign. Heather will tour with the orchestra in the Autumn.

First time vinyl issue of this 1997 Mego classic. General Magic, the duo of Ramon Bauer and Andi Pieper, who, alongside Pita, first pioneered the classic Mego sound on the Fridge Trax 12” in 1995. The following year proved to be formulative when Mego released Frantz alongside a slew of game changing releases from Farmers Manuel, Pita and Fennesz.

Originally released as MEGO 010 Frantz presented a thrilling digression from what was in vogue in music at the time. This was the advent of portable computing and the Vienna based label was at the forefront of harnessing the potential of audio within this new technology.

At once smart and playful these releases reconfigured once disparate genres such as industrial, techno, glitch and the avant garde, folding them into a bright, audacious and euphoric new system of sound. The music on Frantz (named after the Austrian skier, Franz Klammer) still pushes the boundaries of acceptable audio constructions with it’s startling fried electricity and twisted sensibility. The sense of joy in the audio discovery is palatable as techno laced explorations unfold a variety of unexpected and unprecedented sonic manoeuvres.

Tyrell launches proceedings as schizophrenic stuttering handclaps simultaneously slice into pieces as it propels forward. The bending of the brain is on display with the likes of ‘Obvious’ and ‘Close, But Not Quien’. Temko skewers digital debris in which a ghost melody comes to the fore. Brazen rhythms mobilize the tracks ‘No Ketting’ and ‘Bonden’ whilst the Official GM Ski-WM Theme is a short stab of priceless pop wizardry skittering about a strange exhilarating melody in homage to the finest of winter activities.

This reissue also includes ‘Die Mondlandung’ which was released as a 12” in 1995 (MEGO 002), and has never been released anywhere, physical or digital, since. This track is based on the live German TV coverage of the moon landing. An apt theme for the abundance of exploration contained within this classic release.

Listening to the test pressings of the remastered Frantz album for the first time on vinyl, 25 years after the original release on the then still young Mego label in 1997, felt like uncovering an ancient artefact. In those exciting days during the mid-1990s, together with the late Peter Rehberg, we founded a label called Mego to further explore the wonders of electronic music. And that is what we did for the next 10 years until everything became too much with the label in somewhat rough waters. So we dropped out of music business and pursued different things. It was Peter who continued producing and releasing music with the restarted label, now called Editions Mego. Until his unexpected death in July 2021, he developed Editions Mego into the grown-up and much acclaimed outfit for which it is known today. We will forever miss Peter’s inspiring personality and his uncompromising creativity. His legacy will live on in his music and in the vast and rich Mego and eMego catalogues. We are humbled and proud to have played a role in those formative years of the label.

Peter approached us in October 2020 with the idea to do a vinyl reissue of Frantz, just in time for the 25 year anniversary of its release. That came as a complete surprise for us, General Magic had not released any music or performed live for over 15 years. Anyway, we were delighted with the prospect of having that General Magic "classic" remastered (by the exceptional Russell Haswell) and released for the first time on vinyl on Editions Mego.

Frantz is a collection of tracks that we produced in 1995 and 1996 right after recording “Fridge Trax” (with Peter) and “Die Mondlandung” (which comes as a bonus track on this reissue). At that time, we started to migrate our analogue gear to 64 MB RAM computers and used almost every other digital thing that yielded a sound by any means. We even deliberately crashed our then so-called "Powerbooks" and scratched self-produced CD-Rs until they produced previously unheard sounds. Real time audio processing with computers was barely a thing back then (before SuperCollider was released), but cheerful massaging of sound files yielded interesting results and the future looked bright. Listening to Frantz today, with decades of distance, there are some parts that might appear dated by modern standards, but the energy and the general magic of that period is well captured.

All Frantz tracks were produced in Andi's studio in Berlin and at Mego Vienna. The Mego studio/office was a vivid place located in an old factory on the outskirts of Vienna. We shared the place with Tina Frank, who created most of the early Mego covers and videos. Other artists, musicians and friends were hanging out there almost every day. Many ideas on Frantz are a product of that particular environment. “Mimi”, for example, is based on a field recording in the backyard of the factory, where we also shot the video for “Tyrell”. “11.25” contains sounds from the Prague train station we regularly passed through on the night train travelling between Vienna and Berlin. Other sounds were sourced from the early internet and mangled on the computer, carefully preserving those early audio codec artefacts. While working on the Frantz tracks at the Mego Vienna studio, Peter was usually around, as he was literally working and living there. And so, of course, he also made an impact on that album: It might not be widely known but Peter even appeared on Frantz contributing his voice to the choir on “The Official Ski WM Theme”.

The sensation was perfect – Helloween, who have sold more than 10 million records worldwide, being one of the most respected German metal bands since 1984, announced their PUMPKINS UNITED WORLD TOUR in 2016. The media was raving about the TOUR OF THE YEAR, playing 69 shows in 32 countries all over the world. Muti hat im Verlaufe seiner außerordentlichen Karriere die prominentesten Orchester der Welt, wie die Berliner Philharmoniker, das Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, die New Yorker Philharmoniker und das Orchestre National de France dirigiert, hat aber zu den Wiener Philharmonikern ein besonders inniges Verhältnis. Er wird das interessante Programm des Neujahrskonzertes 2021 sicherlich mit italienischer "Grandezza" bereichern. Neben unsterblichen Hits wie dem "Frühlingsstimmen-Walzer" von Johann Strauss, dem "Kaiserwalzer", "An der schönen blauen Donau" und dem "Radetzky-Marsch", gibt es 2021 auch wieder zahlreiche Premieren beim Neujahrskonzert von entdeckenswerten Walzern und Polkas u.a. von Franz von Suppé, Carl Zeller, Carl Millöcker, Karl Komzák, Josef Strauss und Johann Strauss Vater.Ein eleganter, beschwingter Gute-Laune-Auftakt 2021 mit Klassik der Extraklasse!

"Don't Let The Ink Dry", produziert von Aaron Dessner von The National, ist ein Werk von extremer Sensibilität und Fantasie. Die Britin Eve Owen, die als Gastsängerin auf dem The National Album "I Am Easy To Find" zu hören und bereits mehrfach mit The National aufgetreten ist, nahm sich für ihr Solo Debütalbum ganze drei Jahre Zeit. Während dieser Periode verbrachte die 20-jährige ihre Sommerferien mit Dessner in New York, wo sie mit ihm schrieb und Songs aufnahm. Dieser kreative Prozess war für Owen eine willkommene Zuflucht von ihrem stressigen Schulalltag. Die Sängerin entdeckte ein neues Gefühl von Freiheit und Zugehörigkeit und entwickelte einen ganz eigenen Sound: wild aber doch zart, unruhig aber differenziert genug, um auch die flüchtigsten Gefühle einzufangen. Aufgenommen wurde im Long Pond Studio, einer umgebauten Scheune und ein altes Bauernhaus tief im Hudson Valley. Passend zum Ambiente gibt Owen sich stellenweise dem Folk hin, allerdings mit elektronischen Experimenten angereichert. Mit Hilfe von Musikern wie dem Multi-Instrumentalisten Rob Moose (Bon Iver, Perfume Genius) und dem Pianisten Thomas Bartlett (alias Doveman, der u.a. mit David Byrne, St. Vincent und Father John Misty gespielt hat) gelangen es ihr und Dessner, einen detailverliebten, experimentellen und eigenwilligen Sound zu entwickeln. "Don't Let The Ink Dry" behandelt intensiv Owens Kampf mit Angst, Entfremdung, Verletzlichkeit und Selbsterhaltung.

Mit - They`ve Given Me Schrott! - Die Outtakes' erscheint nun zusätzlich eine Edition als 3er CD und
5er LP mit den bisher nur in der Seitenhirsch-Box veröffentlichten Outtakes. Vom allerersten
Cassettenrecorder-Demo - Der lustige Astronaut' (1978), über bislang nur auf Vinyl erhältliche Songs
aus der Frühphase der Band, mit - Helgoland' die Demo Ur-Fassung von - Westerland', sowie zig
weitere seltene und kuriose Demos, Radiotracks und Gimmicks, und das oft erwähnte und nie
veröffentliche englische Album.
Anmerkung: Bitte erwarten Sie hier keine durchgängig hochwertige Audioqualität: Diese Raritäten sind
zum Teil Kellerfunde auf Basis von alten Audiocassetten oder Vinylplatten, die aufwendig restauriert
und neu gemastert wurden. Allerdings kann man aus einem Toaster kein Rennrad machen.

MONOS/UD is Opcion´s debut album under this moniker, released on the austrian vinyl-label for contemporary music GOD Records.

MONOS (Side A) offers three solo works of heavily processed dark ambience and swelling noises, accompanied by harsh stammering beats.

On each track of UD (Side B) Opcion joins forces with one of the guest instrumentalists Maja Osojnik (Paetzold Bass Recorder), Bernhard Loibner (E-Bass) and Kurt Bauer (Violin), to create three works based on ruptured improvisational recordings which were later edited to become fully constructed pieces.
