Mr Bongo is proud to present an official reissue of Zé Rodrix E A Agência De Mágicos ‘O Esquadrão Da Morte’. Written, arranged and composed by the genius of Zé Rodrix and performed by his band 'Agência de Mágicos’, this Brazilian library funk beauty is the soundtrack to Carlos Imperial's 1975 film of the same title. Echoing European soundtrack maestros such as Roy Budd and Ennio Morricone, but with a Brazilian swagger, Zé Rodrix's score is a sublime gem that needs rediscovery.

Rich in 70's soundtrack cool, the score is packed with orchestrated jazz, chase scene-funk, breaks, psychedelic freakouts and plenty of drama. The loose and quirky break-beat jazz-funk of 'Assalto' feels almost tailor-made for today's hip-hop production aesthetic. The opening drum break of 'Esconderijo' is a sampler’s dream and has already been reinterpreted by the Turkish Rapper Anıl Piyancı, as well as Brazil's DJ Caique.

Carlos Imperial was a jack of all trades. As a songwriter and music producer, he created a highly impressive back catalogue. It includes working with or writing songs for Tim Maia, Elza Soares, Brigitte Bardot, and Wilson Simonal. He also co-wrote the rare cult Brazilian 7" compacto 'Lindo Sonho Delirante (L. S. D') by Fábio. Carlos Imperial wrote liner notes and was an actor, filmmaker, television presenter, and media figure. His film 'O Esquadrão da Morte' is a violent heist movie starring Beto Bandeira, Claire Chevalier, and Baby Conceicao; in the vein of exploitation films and gritty, raw B-Movie cinema of the day. Both the film and album share striking, macabre artwork by artist Benicio.

The instrumentalist, arranger, and singer-songwriter Zé Rodrix has a musical achievements list that is also one to admire. He’s worked with the cream of Brazilian music, having written songs covered by the greats, including Quarteto Em Cy, Ronald Mesquita, Elis Regina, Karma, and Célia, to name just a few. His written arrangements have graced the music of Luli Lucinha E O Bando and Helio Matheus. He was a member of the iconic group Som Imaginário and played piano and synthesizer on Secos & Molhado's classic 1973 album.

We are super pleased to make this dusty treasure available again. It is a wonderful soundtrack score that more than holds its own with its European and American counterparts of the era.

Burning Hell was recorded in Detroit, MI in 1959, but not released until 1964. Even then, it was only available in the UK. This 180-gram vinyl pressing marks the first official worldwide single LP release of the album. The album was pressed at QRP in collaboration with Acoustic Sounds and features Hooker solo playing originals and classics. AllMusic writes that on this album Hooker proves himself to be an excellent performer who could have rivaled the Delta bluesmen of any era.

In February 2023, multi-instrumentalist, producer, songwriter, and “genre-defying melody man” (Billboard) Amtrac released his highly-anticipated third album ‘Extra Time’ via Openers.

Inspired by a period of deep reflection during the 2020 lockdowns, ‘Extra Time’ consists of a handcrafted fuse of delicate textures and gritty styles into an unfiltered sonic trip, with each song depicting the process of emotions during a time of uncertainty for the future. It’s a 13-track exploration of forced introspection, a cohesive story that finishes with a surreal feeling of hope.

Amtrac stated: “I made this record to encompass what I was feeling during the times of uncertainty in the world, it helped me cope and was my outlet for everything I was going through. When the listener is done with this album I’m hoping to create the feeling of when you left the movie theater as a child and just saw something that made you think differently.”

Designed to mimic the tension and release of a classic film score, the unique sound of ‘Extra Time’ was heavily influenced by Amtrac’s immersion in the worlds of Jazz and 90s video game music, particularly the classic 90s computer game Grim Fandango and the sonic landscapes of Miles Davis and Stanley Turrentine in addition to the groundbreaking work of fellow electronic pioneers such as Bonobo and Dan Snaith.

Album highlights include kickoff track “Heard Me Right” which was described by Billboard as a “moving mix of rhythmic bass lines and atmospheric melodies”, “Contrast” featuring vocalist Reva Devito, and “Domino” featuring Future Islands frontman Samuel T. Herring that Fangoria described as “like John Carpenter and Basement Jaxx had a baby”. The album also features vocals from his friend Naeem, who worked closely with Amtrac on the jazzy and suspended-in-time groove of “Hesitation.” “Nobody Else” flips a vocal from the Four Tops classic “I Can’t Help Myself” over energetic drums and sultry guitar, and “Dancing With You” unfolds with traditional house elements toward an explosive climax of layered synths. Having made his name with intense DJ sets and creative remixes and collaborations, ‘Extra Time’ is the perfect showcase for Amtrac’s trademark stylistic dexterity and melodic sensitivity - and redefines what it means to create electronic music in 2023.

This follows his collab with Diplo and Leon Bridges on “High Rise” and the recent release of “I’ll Be Around”, his collaboration with English vocalist/producer Elderbrook.

Mark Broom drops the fifth volume of ‘Mutated Battle Breaks’.

Mark Broom’s ‘Mutated Battle Breaks’ series on Radio Slave’s Rekids Special Projects dates back to 2021; since then, he’s released four volumes, with its next chapter arriving to mark the label’s first EP of 2025. Each ‘Mutated Battle Breaks’ EP consists of an extended runtime of eight tracks, supported by the likes of Robert Hood, Ben UFO, I.Jordan, Pariah, Carista, Mumdance, Lauren Flax, and many more.

Across volume 5 of ‘Mutated Battle Breaks’, Mark Broom primes eight more dancefloor-ready cuts complete with rugged grooves, punchy stabs, and wild Techno sequences. From the opener ‘Romance’ and its frenzied arrangement, through to the rolling bleep-infused ‘Ranger’, Broom once again shows his mastery of rhythm and the breath of his Techno productions - one thing is certain: he continues to be one of the most significant producers in Techno after more than three decades.

Jones, pianist/guitarist Steve Cropper, bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn, drummer Al Jackson, Jr.-pianist Isaac Hayes, and the Memphis Horns, consisting of tenor saxophonist Joe Arnold, trumpeter Wayne Jackson, tenor saxophonist Andrew Love and baritone saxophonist Floyd Newman.

The Otis Redding Dictionary of Soul was released in October 1966 on the Stax label and peaked at No. 73 and at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and the R&B LP charts respectively. The album produced two singles, "Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song)" and "Try a Little Tenderness." In 2,000 it was voted No. 488 in Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1,000 Albums. In 2012, the album was ranked No. 254 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Black Eyed Sons - A New Rock 'n' Roll Collective - Members of The Quireboys and Down n' Outz are joined by an amazing collection of fellow musicians for a joyous collaboration of mutual admiration and musical celebration. Enjoy the debut album 'Cowboys In Pinstriped Suits" released via Off Yer Rocka recordings 31st January 2025. Since the band announced they were working on their highly anticipated new album, "The Band Rolls On", what was already becoming a chance for a musical rebirth metamorphosized into something far bigger and more ambitious. The final cuts feature distinguished collaborations from a multitude of Rock Royalty.

The band, their management and close friends within the industry all agreed that this should be treated as a stand-alone new project, a Rock 'n' Roll Collective going under the name "Black Eyed Sons", a nod to a previous album from their extensive back catalogue. The revised album title, "Cowboys in Pinstriped Suits” is named after one of the eleven tracks and features none other than Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott alongside Alice Cooper guitarist Ryan Roxie and bass grooves from Chip Z’Nuff. Guy Griffin commented "It's been nice to take a break and focus on the writing. Working with our own band as well as so many friends within the industry has done nothing but inspire us to write and create this exciting new project. We've done the hard work getting the tracks laid down, we're now looking forward to going back out on the road as Black Eyed Sons and delivering something entirely new from five musicians who've been playing together for over twenty years. Relationships break down sometimes, that’s Rock 'n' Roll, everyone does their thing, but we want to make sure there's no confusion as to what this is. Quote from the band : “This whole album was built like a trip. After our first album it was hard for us to figure out where we wanted to go musically. We never made as many demos and drafts- almost forty or fifty - for any release before. Then suddenly Paul played a guitar riff and we knew that something had been unlocked in our creative process, like a revelation, it later became our album opener ‘Open the Gates’.

Everything escalated from this first melody and we began seeing the picture of what we wanted sonically: prominent synths creating this levitating feeling, powerful uplifting guitars and lyrics that captured the almost spiritual high we get when creating music. Every time we hit the studio, ‘Golden Bay’ became this sacred space—our escape where we could let go and liberate ourselves. Boytronic was founded in the early 80’s in Hamburg by Holger Wobker (aka Bryllyant Berger) and Peter Sawatzki. At the beginning, under the moniker of Kapitän Sehnsucht, they were in charge of making the soundtrack for some seedy sex shows on Hamburg’s famous ‘Mile of Sin’. After a while, the boys found that not so satisfying and, through it was a well-paid job, they decided to leave hoping to break into the world of pop music as Boytronic. They already had some demo songs that got the attention of Mercury Records. The first single “You” was recorded highly influenced by the sound of New Order and Patrick Cowley. It didn’t go very well at the beginning. It was just a moderate club hit, but soon after they got lucky and performed “You” on a German TV Show. Just after this, sales reached 80,000 copies in the first week and had a major hit in the German charts reaching position 10. This sudden success was followed by the recordings of the debut album “The Working Model” that was finished in only fourteen days and released at the end of 1983. “The Working Model” is considered as one of the best techno-pop releases coming from Germany in the 80’s. An album more than 40 years old and still sounding so fresh and authentic.

I first saw Hugh and Jackson play together at Good God’s ‘Soft Future Piano Bar’ at the Sydney Opera House in 2017. That year was a fruitful year for the two as artists and for the Sydney music community in general. I remember that all of us, along with Greville and Brad, hosted a DIY party in a tunnel under a highway somewhere near Sydney Airport. Our private bandleader, Oscar Mulero, returns strongly to his own label with a complete techno album. This work represents the new edition of the WUBC special series and will be released in both double vinyl and digital formats with an extra son on the zeroes and ones edition.

On this occasion, Oscar focuses on the dance floor unceremoniously, except for the required ambient introduction. Throughout the sound journey that involves the continuous listening to the album, the listener is immersed in a complete experience on the dance floor, with the correct doses of mentalism and physical exercise that are required to develop the activity at the highest level.

As is tradition in Oscar Mulero's productions, there is a strong classical content, which draws on the original sources of Detroit and Birmingham, but seasoned with that dose of sci-fi that only he knows how to administer with this intensity.
