Genesis Owusu returns with the highly anticipated sophomore album, STRUGGLER, out on 18 August 2023. On the back of the critically acclaimed debut album, Smiling with No Teeth, that put Genesis Owusu on the global map, a new chapter begins on May 18 with the lead single Leaving the Light. A fervent anthem about survival and perseverance, Leaving the Light, sets an urgent tone for the new album. STRUGGLER explores the chaos and absurdity of life, and our ability to endure. Where Smiling With No Teeth was all about the battle (against depression and racism), STRUGGLER is about how to get through the struggle.

The album was inspired by Owusu witnessing a close friend hitting the bring and coming through the other side. The experience, alongside reading Beckett's Waiting for Godot and Kafka's Metamorphosis, found Owusu questioning life and finding beauty in the struggle. The standard LP is featured on classic black vinyl.

Die berüchtigten Metal Piraten von ALESTORM sind zu neuen Schandtaten bereit und veröffentlichen ihre neuen EP Voyage of the Dead Marauder am

Now based in New Orleans their sound has yielded a subtle but correlative shift in the band. Outside Lies Magic offers an audible lightness. Most notably Dan Burton’s voice, once hushed and at times hesitant, is now full-bodied and sure; his heart, once tenuously carried on his sleeve, is now firmly in his throat. And though this might be the leanest the lineup has been, they are focused and warm, exuding the maximalism of their new home with nuance and a laissez-faire approach. Forest Green Vinyl. Als uneheliches Kind von Elvis und Lux Interior hat der israelische Gitarrist Charlie Megira während seiner viel zu kurzen 44 Reisen um die Sonne ein berauschendes Amalgam aus 50er-Jahre-Trash-Rock, Surf-Tremolo und hallgetränktem Goth gebraut. In 15 Jahren nahm er sieben Alben auf, die hauptsächlich auf CD-R veröffentlicht wurden, die meisten davon sind heute unlesbar oder liegen auf einer Mülldeponie. Nur mit einer Eko-Gitarre, einem schwarzen Smoking und seiner charakteristischen Sonnenbrille bewaffnet, war Charlie Megira ein Künstler, der sich in Luft auflöste, während wir alle auf unsere Telefone starrten. Auf seinem Debütalbum "Da Abtomatic Meisterzinger Mambo Chic" aus dem Jahr 2000 kanalisiert Megira den Optimismus der amerikanischen Nachkriegszeit, narkoleptischen Surf und den Soundtrack von Twin Peaks zu einem ganz eigenen Lo-Fi-Meisterwerk. The Buttholes shared elements with all of these groups, but added an insane psychedelic edge and a propensity for bizarre spectacle. This evolution continued on "Rembrandt Pussyhorse," which featured a set of tunes for which the Buttholes" rock-based form destruction was mixed with experimental, tape-mangling passages of many flavors. Haynes was handling all audible vocals by this point, and his mastery of post-tongue dynamism was finally in full flight. Meanwhile, their live shows became legendary examples of excess and derangement, and their music just kept getting louder and stranger and more savage. It was the diametric opposite of the hardcore scene from which it had emerged, which was heading in ever more codified and stylistically conservative directions.

Fused with equal parts spastic improvisation, shrouded ritual, and meticulous arrangement, it presents a sonic topography at once tongue-in-cheek, sensitive, and nightmarish. With discordant chorales and angular trumpet improvisations churning in an ever-evolving wash of whispers and howls, MASS is a collection of three hazy, harsh, and frightful sound worlds. With tracks meandering between aggressive rhythms, eerie ambiances, and abrasive cut-up electronic textures, MASS draws inspiration from early tape music, horror film soundtracks, and grindcore. It was assembled between listening to extended doses of Else Marie Pade, Daphne Oram, Eliane Radigue, the Locust, Edgard Varèse, Maryanne Amacher, Dick Raaijmakers, Naked City, Mr. Bungle, and Thomas Ankersmit, bringing a little bit of all of them along with it. MASS was recorded and mixed over the course of three weeks in January–February 2021 while in the midst of a cross-country move. Recorded entirely in short-term housing away from her studio (and most of her instruments), Reid relied exclusively on her voice, trumpet, flugelhorn, household objects, and Make Noise's Strega semi-modular synthesizer for all sound materials. Original sound materials were recorded loosely and independently with little to no overdubbing, instead relying on meticulous editing and processing in the manner of classic tape music.

Multi award-winning screenwriter Nicole Taylor (Wild Rose, 3 Girls, The Nest) adapted the novel for Drama Republic and Netflix.

The music had to follow their journey as their relationship evolves over the years, but still feel like it was rooted in one place.

Was ein Abriss! Weniger ist dann manchmal doch mehr - so gelernt an dem Beispiel von Park+Riot aus Leipzig. Samuel und Micha machen Gitarre und Drums, und das reicht hier um ordentlich Randale loszutreten. Irgendwie erinnern sie an mid 90er Chaoscore, mit einer irren Schippe Postrock und den nötigen kleinen Melodien, die die Songs im Kopf hängen bleiben lassen. Trotz alledem sind die Songs enorm dicht und stimmig, wirken nicht zusammengestückelt oder heterogen. Was die Songs eint ist auf jeden Fall ein Gespür für Rhythmik und Melodie, was auch den zerfahrensten Song irgendwie wieder auf die Spur bringt und fast schon Pop-Momente erklingen lässt. So treffen bei "The End" zum Beispiel Spoken Words-Part auf black metallige Knüppel-Attacken, bei "Clouds" treibende Schweden-Core Parts auf postmetallisches Atmo-Geklimper um dann wieder mit viel Effet Fahrt aufzunehmen und schliesslich in einem deftigen Neckbreaker-Mosh zu enden - Toll! Hier sind drei Bands in einer vereint, und die eine hat obendrauf noch was zu sagen. Wenn bei "Long Run" der ganz Laden den Refrain mitgröhlt, weiß der Letzte spätestens, dass er bei einer ganz wichtigen Sache mit dabei ist.

When Miles Davis heard Barney Wilen for the first time during a jam session at the Club Saint-Germain in Paris, he exclaimed: “This is the best tenor saxophone I’ve heard in Europe, he plays tenor in an authentic way, much better than many current stars in the States.”

Barney Wilen’s mother was French, his father a successful American dentist-turned-inventor. He grew up mostly on the French Riviera; the family left during World War II but returned upon its conclusion. According to Wilen himself, he was convinced to become a musician by his mother’s friend, the poet Blaise Cendrars. As a teenager he started a youth jazz club in Nice, where he played often.

He moved to Paris in the mid-’50s and worked with such American musicians as Bud Powell, Benny Golson, Miles Davis, and J.J. Johnson at the Club St. Germain. His emerging reputation received a boost in 1957 when he played with Davis on the soundtrack to the Louis Malle film Lift to the Scaffold. Two years later, he performed with Art Blakey and Thelonious Monk on the soundtrack to Roger Vadim’s Les Liaisons Dangereuses (1960). He’s probably the first non-US musician to play at the Newport Jazz Festival – it was in 1959.

In 1957 he made his very first album as leader, The Barney Wilen Quintet for the US label Guilde du Jazz / Jazztone at the age of 20. Unfortunately, this record was not widely distributed in France because Barney was under contract with the French label Vogue. This album reflects joy and sadness on an emotional level by the subtletly of Wilen’s musical imagination and physical releasing the essential siprit of jazz swing. On this so rare record, Barney plays with : on alto Hubert Fol, who recorded couple of times with Django Reinhardt. On Piano Nico Buninck, born in Amsterdam, is considered one of the best Young pianist in his country. Lloyd Thompson is a Young talented bassist who played with Lester Young, Dizzy Gillespie and Kenny Clarke. On drums Al Levitt, 25, has already toured in the USA with Charles Mingus, Lennie Tristano, Stan Getz and Lee Konitz.

Ursprünglich für Mitte 2020 geplant, wurde der zeitliche Ablauf dieser Platte durch das Auftreten von Corona vereitelt. Aber es bräuchte mehr als nur eine Pandemie, um die exquisite Power dieses Trios zu dämpfen, wenn es einmal in Fahrt ist. Und "Sweep It Into Space" ist ein Meisterwerk von auf den Punkt gebrachter Energie. In den Jahrzehnten seit der Veröffentlichung von Dinosaur Jr.s Triptychon an Gründungs-Alben ist klar geworden, dass ihr Sound, der einst als eine Form von fast gezähmten Lärm gefeiert wurde, eher eine Art voll funktionierende Popmusik ist/war/immer war. Im Zentrum von allem, was sie taten, standen schon immer Melodien. Was Dinosaur Jr. produzieren, ist nichts anderes als eine schöne neue Version des Rock-Kontinuums - Riff, Power, Beat und Sehnsucht, geschaffen mit einem Blick in die unendliche Zukunft. Aufgenommen wie immer in Amherst's Bisquiteen Studio, begannen die Sessions für "Sweep It Into Space" im Spätherbst 2019, nach einer Westküsten-/Südost-Tour. Der einzige zusätzliche Musiker, der dieses Mal zum Einsatz kam, war Kurt Vile, der das Album mitproduzierte und die 12-saitige Leadgitarre auf dem beschwingten "I Ran Away" spielte. J Mascis' Stimme ist sofort eingängig über den aufsteigenden, elektrisierenden Gitarrenlinien. Wie es für Dinosaur Jr. typisch ist, schrieb und singt Lou Barlow zwei der Dutzend Stücke des Albums (und liefert mit "Garden" seinen vielleicht besten Dinosaur-Beitrag), und Murphs Schlagzeug-Spiel treibt die Platte an wie ein Go-Cart aus der Hölle. Lous Songs sind hier so elegant wie immer. Js Tracks fließen und blühen in den verschiedenen Richtungen, die er oft verfolgt. Aber es gibt nur sehr wenige Momente, in denen man nicht wüsste, dass man Dinosaur Jr. hört, selbst wenn man die Nadel mit verbundenen Augen an irgendeiner Stelle der Platte ansetzen würde. Sie haben einen unverwechselbaren Sound. Mit "Sweep It Into Space" erweitern sie ihr persönliches Universum weiter, ohne jemals ihren zentralen Kern zu verlieren.

Africamore: The Afro-Funk Side of Italy (1973-1978)

Continuing Four Flies' dedication to delving into lesser-explored periods of Italian music, Africamore takes us on a captivating journey into the intersection of Afro-funk and the Italian soundscape during the six years between 1973 and 1978 - a time when disco was looming on the horizon and the nightclub market was rapidly expanding.

Before reaching Italian shores, the infectious sound originating from African and Afro-Caribbean roots traversed both the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, landing on New York dancefloors, where DJ Dave Mancuso discovered "Soul Makossa" by Manu Dibango. In 1973, from Mancuso's Loft parties, the song's hypnotic groove spread to the rest of the globe, including in Italy, where it sparked a wave of imitations and variations.


Tribal influences thus found their way into Italian soul-funk and early-disco productions released between 1973 and 1978 – from psychedelic-tinged tunes like Jean Paul & Angelique's "Africa Sound" to the Afrobeat-inspired club banger "Kumbayero" by composer/producer Albert Verrecchia (aka Weyman Corporation); and from groundbreaking Afro-cosmic songs like Chrisma's "Amore", co-written by Vangelis and featuring the rhythms of Ghanaian-British Afro-rock band Osibisa, to mind-blowing floor-fillers like Beryl Cunningham's "Why O", a re-write of Nat King Cole's "Calypso Blues" arranged by Paolo Ormi, with percussion breaks that sound pretty much like what would later become known as techno.


Combining feel-good vibes with driving rhythms, world-style percussion, and even synths, all these productions pushed the boundaries of dance music at a time when disco had not yet taken over. In doing so, they sowed many of the seeds of the later Italian cosmic scene and its unique mixture of African elements, disco-funk and electronic music.

This was a brief but nuanced period in Italian music history, one that deserves to be rediscovered, with love.

Musica Automata is an album by the Italian composer Leonardo Barbadoro (formerly known by his electronic alias Koolmorf Widesen), comprised of music performed by the largest robots orchestra in the world: 70 automated instruments controlled by digital impulses from a laptop computer.

It is music that brings together two dimensions often perceived as incompatible, even antithetical: the boundless expressive possibilities of electronics implemented by an acoustic instrumental body in a sensory reality, beating, vibrating, and blowing.

Die beiden haben das fast schon unheimliche Talent, in ein und dem gleichen Songs die Geister von NEU!, BOB JAMES, MARCOS VALLE, SHUGGIE OTIS und STEREOLAB heraufzubeschwören. Es ist ein Album, das danach verlangt, immer und immer wieder umgedreht und gespielt zu werden. "Im Sinne der Zeit" ist ein herrliches Werk, die Art von Album, die so klingt und sich so anfühlt, als würde es auf den Grooves schweben und dabei zwischen jazzigen, funkigen Rhythmen und absichtlich mechanischen Grooves pendeln, die mit dem Puls eines elektronischen Herzens zucken. Besonders seltsam ist es, dass die Melodien niemals anders als warm und umarmend klingen, obwohl das Duo nur auf Deutsch singt. Die Tanzfläche ruft! Vom pulsierenden Opener "Between The Buttons" bis zum roboterartigen Two Step von "Koffer" nimmt das Duo niemals den Fuß vom Gas. Während sich das Ganze ein wenig abkühlt, fühlen sich die Grooves noch warm an und finden ihren Höhepunkt in den beiden letzten Tracks des Albums: dem ungeheuerlich eingängigen Rausschmeißer "Regen raus" und dem allerletzten Track "Vergangenes", der den Hörer an der Hand ins Taxi nach Hause führt.

Obwohl erst Februar 2012 in Aachen zusammengefunden, veröffentlichen FJ¥RT im März 2014 ihr zweites Album "D'accord". Ja, das geht fix bei den Jungs, die scheinbar keine Ruhe und Pause kennen. Chris (Gitarre, Gesang), David (Bass) und Frank (Drums) wissen als klassisches Three-Piece Radau für ein ganzes Orchester zu inszenieren. Die zehn neuen Songs auf "D'accord" fügen dem bereits gelegten FJ¥RT-Grundgerüst nun noch eine weiter Dimension hinzu - sie verschachteln, stapeln, experimentieren und verwüsten, mit einer unglaublichen Bandbreite und Abwechslung. After the Three 6 Mafia hit album The End proved that Memphis Rap was commercially viable, DJ Paul and Juicy J released Koopsta Knicca's classic Gangsta Rap album, Da Devil’s Playground. The album featured older remixed, edited and remastered Koopsta Knicca solo material that had only been released to a small under-ground audience long before the rapper saw fame via his membership in Three 6 Mafia. It was an instant hit!!

One of the most in demand albums from the Memphis rap scene now finally sees and official vinyl release.

Los Angeles duo crushed announce their signing to Ghostly International and the first vinyl pressing of their 2023 debut EP, extra life. A love letter to `90s radio, the first collaboration from musicians Bre Morell and Shaun Durkan finds them tuning a shared taste for maximalist dream pop. Open-hearted hooks and melodic riffs move through a haze of breakbeats, spliced sound design, and distortion. Faithful yet fluid in its channeling of golden age alt-rock, Britpop, trip-hop, and electronica, there's a refreshing freedom to the sound, which quickly resonated with fans and critics upon initial release. Pitchfork called it "effortless, widescreen dream pop that's serene without being sentimental," and NPR cited its "deep sense of place and time." The music also struck Ghostly, and the first measure for crushed and their new label home is to give extra life a wider physical release paired with remixes from band favorites Real Lies and DJ Python. The story of crushed is written across midnight transmissions. In the early 2010s, Morell, who fronts the band Temple of Angels (Run For Cover Records), hosted a graveyard shift college radio show and used to play music from Durkan's former band Weekend (Slumberland Records). In 2020, Durkan, having focused on production work (Tamaryn, Young Prisms) following Weekend's run as a formidable shoegaze act, hosted a late-night program on a community radio station in San Francisco. Driving one day, he heard Temple of Angels by chance and was immediately drawn to Morell's voice. He added a song that night to his on-air tracklist. Morell saw it and reached out to thank him and point to that connection made a decade earlier. The exchange sparked a long-distance project. First, they filled an audible moodboard with `90s classics from the likes of Natalie Imbruglia, Sneaker Pimps, and The Sundays. Songs that transported them back to places of comfort and discovery; Morell's memories of a metallic, lavender boombox that dispatched past sounds from a world beyond her Houston suburbia, and Durkan, in his mom's car on the way to band practice. These touchpoints provided a palette for crushed to experiment without expectations, purely for the fun of it. A creative intimacy emerged; stepping outside the reverb walls of her full band, Morell embraced more clarity and a range of emotions in her vocals, while Durkan looked inward as a producer, collaging fragments from their everyday lives: voice memos, piano recordings, even the panting of Morell's late dog on "milksugar." The wistful ballad embodies extra life's feeling as a whole. "I am home again," sings Morell; her refrain cycles above a drum machine beat as Durkan colors their universe with star-lit strums, synth swells, and the crackle of fireworks in the distance. Elsewhere, the duo's uptempo mode is equally effective, like the super-charged duet "coil" or the propulsive opener "waterlily," which sets a cinematic tone for the set. Bold, bright, and replayable, extra life presents crushed as a project of immense promise, two artists unlocking something special within themselves, a space to hold both melancholy and bliss. Durkan adds, "To me, extra life is true and pure - in a way I haven't felt about music in a really really long time."
