Aufgenommen in Berlin und aus der Ferne, zwischen 2020 und 2022, kehrt die Band mit ihrem 20. Studioalbum zurück, nach dem letztjährigen “Fire Doesen’t Grow on Trees“ dem zweiten Teil einer aufregenden neuen Phase für Anton Newcombe und seiner Band. Mit ihm im Studio waren Hakon Adalsteinsson (Gitarre), & Uri Rennert (Schlagzeug). Die Band ging 2022 auf Tour und absolvierte u.a. eine 34 Shows umfassende äußerst erfolgreiche Tournee in Nordamerika mit Mercury Rev und The Magic Castles. Eine neue Tour zur Unterstützung des neuen Albums steht im Januar 2023 in Großbritannien an und wird im Februar in Europa fortgesetzt. Ursprünglich war Newcombe stark von der psychedelischen Phase der Rolling Stones beeinflusst - der Name stammt vom Stones-Gitarristen Brian Jones in Verbindung mit einer Anspielung auf den Sektenführer Jim Jones -, aber seit den 2000er Jahren hat sich seine Arbeit in vielen ästhetische Dimensionen ausgeweitet und sich u.a. dem britischen Shoegaze-Genre der 1990er Jahre annähert und Einflüsse aus Weltmusik, insbesondere der Musik des Nahen Ostens und Brasiliens, miteinbezieht.

Klar, bei der 9. Sinfonie von Antonín Dvořák geht die Post ab, auch in dieser Aufnahme. Aber das ist ja wohl nicht alles! Die Streicher von András Keller können blühen wie Blumen auf der Wiese. Sie spielen nicht gleichförmig, sondern in einer wie angeborenen Natürlichkeit, als wäre es eine Kleinigkeit, dass 14 erste Geigen so homogen klingen und gleichzeitig so individuell wie eine einzelne. Auch bei den Bläsern zählt nicht die Hochleistung oder der Zeigefinger ("Schaut her, so ist das gemeint"), sondern die Empfindsamkeit und das Strömen der Musik, z. B. im Englischhornsolo des langsamen Satzes. Das Blech: keine Kraftmeierei, sondern satte oder auch zarte, immer einfühlsame Akkorde. - Die Tempi, die Übergänge, alles fließt organisch und lädt zum Mitgehen ein. Das ist die hohe Kunst des Legato, die manchem als altmodisch galt, in Wirklichkeit aber zeitlos schön ist. Eins der Vorbilder von András Keller heißt, wen wunderts, Wilhelm Furtwängler. Genau in dieser Haltung, bar jeglichen Imponiergehabens entführt uns anschließend der von vielen geliebte Cellist Miklós Perényi behutsam in die geheimnisvolle Zauberwelt des Rondo op. 68/5 und der Waldesstille op. 95. Drei slawische Tänze aus op. 46 runden das Programm ab.

TEMPLE OF DREAD bleiben dem Old School Death Metal grundsätzlich auch auf ihrem vierten Albumhammer "Beyond Acheron" treu. Dazu haben die Ostfriesen den Fokus auf eine dunkle und schwere Atmosphäre gelegt und mit einigen schönen Prisen Melancholie sowie schwarzen Momenten abgerundet. Das stählerne Sahnehäubchen liefern Gastbeiträge des ehemaligen MORGOTH und INSIDIOUS DISEASE Sängers Marc Grewe sowie GOD DETHRONED Frontmann Henri Sattler ab. Die Texte stammen aus der blutigen Feder von Bandfreund und Wortschmied Frank Albers. Die Zeilen des Psychologen drehen sich um antike Mythen und Historie mit Protagonisten wie Ikarus, Vulkan, Hades, Kleopatra und Marcus Antonius. Auch das Cover Artwork von "Beyond Acheron", das vom gefeierten italienischen Künstler Paolo Girardi gestaltet wurde, bleibt beim antiken Thema und zeigt Charon, den Fährmann der griechischen Unterwelt Hades. Die massive Produktion von "Beyond Acheron" stammt von TEMPLE OF DREADs Schlagzeuger Jörg Uken, der in seinem weit bekannten Soundlodge Tonstudio unter anderem bereits Alben von DEW-SCENTED, GOD DETHRONED, OBSCENITY, SUICIDAL ANGELS und WARPATH aufgenommen hat. TEMPLE OF DREAD wurden auf Spiekeroog im Jahr 2017 von Gitarrist Markus Bünnemeyer als Ventil für seine Old School Death Metal Ambitionen gegründet. Im Jahr 2018 stießen Sänger Jens Finger und Schlagzeuger Jörg Uken dazu, mit denen Bünnemeyer auch bei Slaughterday aktiv war. Schon im nächsten Jahr erschien das Debütalbum "Blood Craving Mantras" (2019). Das Trio erwies sich als äußerst kreativ und zwei weitere Alben folgten binnen kurzer Zeit: "World Sacrifice" (2020) und das von der Kritik hochgelobte "Hades Unleashed" im Jahr 2021. Mit "Beyond Acheron" setzen TEMPLE OF DREAD neue Maßstäbe für intelligente Death Metal Brutalität!

Seminal NYC multi-reedist Doug Wieselman announces arresting new album of birdsong arranged for clarinet, flute, banjo and piano WA-Zoh, released on Shahzad Ismaily’s figureight records.

Wieselman has performed with superlative greats (including the Lounge Lizards, Lou Reed, Yoko Ono, Bill Frisell, Iron & Wine, Laurie Anderson, Tricky, Martha Wainwright, Antony and the Johnsons, CocoRosie) and contributed significantly to the NYC Downtown scene over the past three decades. He is described, by NYC Jazz Record, as “a vital force in the New York music scene”.

Over the years, Wieselman has taken hours of recordings of birds both from his world travels and outside his window in Brooklyn. His beautiful new album WA-Zoh uses the recorded bird songs and phrases - slowed down and processed - as source material for original compositions, reflecting the astonishing beauty and inherent musicality of the natural world in a wholly unique take on field recording. Incorporating clarinets, flutes, banjo, piano and percussion, all played by Wieselman himself, the new album is marked step forward from his previous solo outings as a clarinet player, though no less accomplished in its composition, dexterity and skill.


The minimalism, patience, and subtlety here is delicately formed from featherlight interweaving lines of soft, virtuosic instrumentation, resulting in an album that sits somewhere between avian chirrup, rainforest prettiness, the refined intelligence of American minimalism, and the undecorated purity of ambient music.

Sometime in 1984, San Diego native Anthony "Antone" Williams found himself sitting alone at Pure Sound Studios, tinkering around with a drum machine. Eventually he landed on a "sinister groove" which would lay the propulsive foundation for his hauntingly melodic tour de force, "Windows of My Mind." Released the following year as a seven-inch single on his own Unity Records label, the song features Antone's otherworldly production. Some have referred to the result as "post punk soul," but we'll let you be the judge.

Coming up in San Diego in the Seventies, part of an extensive musical family, Antone's creative fuse was lit by the sounds of Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire, and the Jackson 5.. At the age of 13, he was performing in area clubs, making a name for himself. By age 22, he had opened his own recording studio, Pure Sound. The influence of Sly and the Family Stone was decisive for Antone, who took to wearing a star-shaped gold necklace, not unlike the one famously worn by Stone on his epochal 1975 LP High on You.

"Windows of My Mind" was Antone & The Underworld's sole release. Limited to 500 copies and handed out as a promotional tool for a purported album of the same name, the single didn't get much traction. (A story as old as time.) Perhaps the music was ahead of its time and Antone's visionary message will finally sink in 2023. "I didn't want to make a song like Shake Your Booty", he says now. And yet we think that this long-lost record with its "sinister groove" is eminently danceable, almost 40 years later. We challenge you to take a listen to this home-grown 1985 7", remastered directly from the original tape, and make an assessment of your own.

Second album from Elias Mazian.

While his debut album Vrij Van Dromen hinted at the work of a bedroom producer, Elias Mazian never was the person to hide. After becoming a resident DJ at the now gone club Trouw ten years ago, he spent many nights playing records at clubs, and today he is as visible during the day as selector and host on FM radio. With this follow-up record he does one more step out of obscurity: moving from low to high fidelity, into more sincerity.

The songs on Alleen Bij Mij comfortably sit next to the songs he shares with friends on Private Hearts, Mazian's radio show dedicated to pop melodies. Like classic sixties records, the LP clocks just above thirty minutes, while also sharing their harmonic approach. Additional influences can be traced back to seventies krautrock, Dutch disco dub from the eighties and the storytelling of mid-2000's Dutch rap. Channeling these sounds into his own after hour tales, Elias Mazian created the perfect album for late bike rides and night trains alike.

Seconded by his good friend and multi-instrumentalist Anton Pieete and the all-knowing engineer Eelco Bakker, the album is produced and mixed for Mazian's melodies to shine. Combining observations from daily life with the big themes of pop music, this mixture results in eight songs ready for radio play.

Far Out Recordings proudly presents Hermeto Pascoal’s remarkable self-titled debut album. Recorded in 1970 at A&R studios in New York, the album features certified North American titans including Ron Carter, Hubert Laws, Joe Farrel and Googie Coppola, and Brazilian stars Airto Moreira and Flora Purim (who also produced the album).

While it was Hermeto’s first album released under his own name, he had spent the decade or so prior making a name for himself in Brazil and internationally as a composer, arranger and instrumentalist with groups including Sambrassa Trio, Quarteto Novo and Brazilian Octopus, before going on to work with (amongst countless others) Edu Lobo, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Donald Byrd, Airto Moreira and Miles Davis, who allegedly called Hermeto “one of the most important musicians on the planet”.

With Hermeto’s otherworldly orchestral arrangements, ghostly vocal performances from Flora Purim and Googie Coppola, and the inimitable drumming and percussion stylings of Airto Moreira, Hermeto easily rivals some of the oft-celebrated MPB albums of the early 1970s, sitting somewhere between the string-heavy magic of Arthur Verocai’s 1972 debut and the unplacable early experimentalism of Pedro Santos’ 1968 album Krishnanda.

With his phenomenal natural musical genius and a ceaseless sense of creative freedom, Hermeto is widely known for using unconventional objects to make music. In the album’s sleeve notes, Airto highlights the track “Velório (Mourning)” explaining how Heremto filled 36 apple juice bottles with different amounts of water and tuned them to precise pitches in order to create the beguiling harmonies heard.

The reissue of Hermeto Pascoal’s Hermeto, follow’s Far Out’s recent unveiling of a previously unheard Hermeto Pascoal live concert Planetario da Gavea from 1981, and 2017’s release of Hermeto Pascoal’s lost 1976 studio album: Viajando Com O Som.

Exotica, ye-yé cumbia, guaracha infused twist, rock’n roll mambo, Spanish rumba, boogaloo beat, tropical garage and other unexpected bastard genres are featured in this festive compilation of bizarre hits taken from the glorious catalog of records released during the 60s and 70s on the Peruvian label Discos MAG. Some clearly unite genres, others are projects with creative names, but all are bold musical initiatives that got and will always get people onto the dance floor. “Sabroso Go Go” brings together fourteen musical mixes created in the recording studios of Manuel Antonio Guerrero (MAG), in which music directors combine rhythm with alchemy in a quest to find the philosopher's stone of the dance. Exotica, ye-yé cumbia, guaracha infused twist, rock’n roll mambo, Spanish rumba, boogaloo beat, tropical garage and other unexpected bastard genres are featured in this festive compilation. Although this compilation begins in 1957, experiments like this (some more memorable than others) were not new in Peru. The songs on this album were however much more successful hybrids. Some clearly unite genres, others are projects with creative names, but all are bold musical initiatives that got and will always get people onto the dance floor. At the end of the fifties, rock music shook the foundations of Peru, and orchestras rushed to cover hit songs and explore the possibilities of mixing them with tropical music. Lucho Macedo's orchestra took up the mantle and reinterpreted a well-known guaracha by Celia Cruz ('Rock and Roll') in mambo style, renaming it 'Rock and roll Mambo'. 'Maestro de Rock and Roll', a hit by the Cuban Conjunto Casino, received similar treatment. Another mix in this vein is the rock tune 'El Rock de los Chinos' by the Mexican Manolo Muñoz (author of 'Speedy González') recorded by the Chilean Choche Mérida for MAG in 1961. The following year, Chubby Checker’s 'The Twist' hit the scene and was immediately fused with guaracha by maestro Nelson Ferreyra. A legendary MAG musician, Carlos Pickling, composed 'La Charanga del Espacio' in 1963. The space sounds are produced by Pickling and his inseparable Hammond. He himself is the one who leads the orchestra that accompanies Benny Del Solar, Lita Branda and Pablo "Melcochita" Villanueva in the tropicalized version of Spanish Rumba, when the beats of the Iberian rumba were still exotic in South America. Around that time, the Chilean Willy Marambio was already living in Lima. In the track included on this album, the go-go style showcases his virtuosity on the trumpet. Another outstanding trumpet player, Roberto "Tito" Chicoma from Chiclayo, played as a session musician with MAG from 1959. A few years later, he became one of the most popular Colombian cumbia players, a talent he demonstrates in the song on this compilation, which blends the fun of go-go with yé-yé beats. 'Batijugando' was a hit from Mexico and was played in all the rhythms played across the Hispanic world since 1967. Inspired by the "Batman" series, it was performed at MAG by the Betico Salas orchestra, with vocals by the Panamanian lady crooner Nallye Fernández. 'Computador Electrónico' is another surprise on this album, performed by Panamanian vocalist Patty Pastel, it is the only known version in Spanish of 'Der Computer Nr. 3', originally sung in German by France Gall. Two other songs feature Edgar Zamudio. The versatility of Zamudio y Los Vikingos (originally a Chilean group) is demonstrated in the guitar-heavy song composed specifically for the late sixties skate fashion ('Go Go en Patines') and in his idiosyncratic protest song ('Día de Pago') performed in beat style. In the mid-seventies, Los Kintos, led by guitarist Francisco Acosta, developed different harmonic ideas in an instrumental track that veers from boogaloo to salsa, the fashionable rhythm of the day. Finally, in 1976, when the bumping hips dance craze swept the continent, Manuel Guerrero was quick to jump onto the bandwagon, composing a Bump song, together with his son Carlos. The Italian musician based in Lima, Luciano Luciani performed the song 'A Bailar Bump' backed by his band of local musicians Los Mulatos.

The 2022 DreamWorks Animation film Puss In Boots: The Last Wish is the sequel to the spin-off film Puss In Boots (2011) and the sixth installment in the Shrek franchise. Directed by Joel Crawford, the film features a voice star cast including Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek Pinault, Florence Pugh, Olivia Coleman, and John Mulaney amongst others. It received an Academy Award-nomination for Best Animated Feature Film. The story follows the daring Puss In Boots, who discovers that his passion for peril and disregard for safety have taken their toll. Puss has burned through eight of his nine lives, though he lost count along the way. Getting those lives back will send Puss in Boots on his grandest quest yet.

Heitor Pereira composed the film's score, who is best known for scoring the Despicable Me franchise. For this specific release, Pereira selected his favourite pieces to be featured. Together with his team, these pieces were mastered to sound as best as possible on vinyl. It features the additional tracks "Fearless Hero (Hero Version)" with Antonio Banderas, "Por Qué te Vas" by Gaby Moreno, "This Is the End" by Dan Navarro & "La Vida Es Una" by KAROL G.

Puss In Boots: The Last Wish is available as a limited edition of 750 individually numbered copies on orange "Puss" marbled vinyl. This vinyl package includes the map to the "Wishing Star" and a 4-page booklet with liner notes by director Joel Crawford.

In den letzten fünfzehn Jahren haben Beach Fossils ihren Status als eine der definitivsten und beständigsten Bands des New Yorker Undergrounds der 2010er Jahre stetig ausgebaut und neue Hörer erreicht, während sich ihr Sound vom DIY-Soloprojekt von Dustin Payseur zu einer einflussreichen vierköpfigen Dream-Pop-Band entwickelt hat, die selbst produziert, selbst gemanagt und selbst veröffentlicht wird. Bunny steht für Stärke durch Verletzlichkeit. "Bunny" setzt die atemberaubende Entwicklung des Beach Fossils-Sounds fort, indem es Elemente aus der jangligen Melancholie der "What a Pleasure" EP (2011), den düsteren, Post-Punk-inspirierten Tracks von "Clash the Truth" (2013) und den üppigen Arrangements von "Somersault" (2017) aufgreift und ihren "Dream-Pop-Instinkt mit jeder weiteren Veröffentlichung schärft" (INTERVIEW). Inspiriert vom Psych-Pop der frühen Verve- und Spiritualized-Alben sowie von Einflüssen wie The Cure, Wire, den Byrds und Velvet Underground wurde "Bunny" von Payseur selbst produziert und aufgenommen, wobei Lars Stalfors (St. Vincent, Soccer Mommy, Lil Peep) als Mixer fungierte. Payseur merkt an, dass bei der Entstehung dieses Albums mehr Wert auf eine stärkere Ausrichtung auf Popstrukturen gelegt wurde. "Als ich die erste Platte schrieb, gab es keine Refrains, sondern nur instrumentale Gitarrenparts zwischen den Strophen. Dies ist die erste Platte, bei der ich bewusst darüber nachgedacht habe, einen Refrain zu schreiben." Four Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers" demo sessions from 1976 & 1977, compiled together on one album for the first time. The album shows the development of the band building towards their classic 1977 "L.A.M.F." album (recently reissued with a newly found original master), and further points to the direction they would have gone had they not split up. Includes "I Wanna Be Loved" from a recently discovered Master. Pressed in transparent magenta vinyl, it comes with a 12" poster of the Roberta Bayley cover photo - an outtake from the L.A.M.F. cover session, and an inner bag with the late Walter Lure interviewed by Johnny Thunders" biographer Nina Antonia in 2005. Such Ferocious Beauty is vintage Cowboy Junkies and another dimension from the lo-fi Canadian band comprised of, well, family. A tangle of sonic textures, Beauty is a rumination on aging, losing parents, facing mortality and creating space for one"s life in the midst of the ruin that comes from merely living. "Mike has never shied away from the darker, harder and sometimes uglier realities of our human condition," Margo Timmins explains of the band"s singular focus, "nor has he shied from its beauty. Thankfully, with one comes the other." Cowboy Junkies are an alternative country and folk rock band formed in Toronto, Ontario, Canada in 1985 by Alan Anton (bassist), Michael Timmins (songwriter, guitarist), Peter Timmins (drummer) and Margo Timmins (vocalist). The band gained wide recognition with their second studio album, The Trinity Session (1988), recorded in 1987 at Toronto"s Church of the Holy Trinity. Their sound, again using the ambisonic microphone, and their mix of blues, country, folk, rock and jazz earned them both critical attention and a strong fan base. Cowboy Junkies have gone on to record 16 studio albums and five live albums.

Mit ihrem neuen Album „Code Red“ schlägt die deutsche Hard Rock Band DEVICIOUS aus Karlsruhe ein neues Kapitel auf. 2017 gegründet, veröffentlichen sie nun ihr 5. Album in fünf Jahren. Nach einigen Klangexperimenten auf dem Vorgängeralbum „Black Heart“ kehren sie nun zurück zu ihren Wurzeln, zu dem, was sie am besten können. Große Arena-Melodien kombiniert mit bombastischen Chorarrangements und einer großen Produktion.
Das Album wurde von Bandleader und Songwriter Alex Frey selbst produziert und in den Mastersound Entertainment Studios in
Steinheim, Deutschland von Alexander Krull gemischt und gemastert. Er ist der Hauptakteur hinter den Bands ATROCITY und LEAVE’S EYES sondern steht auch auf der Producer- und Mastering-Liste von Bands wie ATROCITY, LEAVE’S EYES, DORO, CREMATORY, VELVET VIPER oder ZAR. Unreleased but perfectly formed "hidden" album, recorded in 1989-90 by Nuno Rebelo on the wake of his "Sagração Do Mês De Maio" double LP (composed in 1988 as soundtrack to the third Manobras de Maio fashion event in Lisbon). The tracks convey a sense of investigative curiosity regarding computer composition and they sound wonderfully artificial. Titles as "Moon OK", "Tiny Space Ships" or "Dança Das Creaturas Elásticas" ("Elastic Creatures Dance") embody this idea of otherworldness, a kind of music actually coming from another place, composed and played by elastic creatures. It displays the functional qualities of Library Music, illustrating playful as much as moody and dense moments. In this way the album comes across as a soundtrack for moving images, sure, but with unusual framing and sharp angles. A unique object in the Portuguese avantgarde, keeping its distance from Academia but also from contemporary independent releases ("Plux Quba" by Nuno Canavarro comes to mind). António Duarte's 2019 mastering enhances this collection of music liberated from the archives of one of the most brilliant, active and challenging musicians of his generation.

Nuno Rebelo was born in 1960, graduated in Architecture, founded Street Kids and Mler Ife Dada, played in the "transitional" line up of GNR in 1982. His creativity expanded into improvised music. Performances and recordings with other musicians multiplied. He composed music for theatre, dance, jingles and, on an almost contradictory scale to his underground credentials, soundtracks for the Expo 98 and Porto 2001 mega events.

“Improvisações Cristalizadas” by Nuno Rebelo:
Short electronic pieces composed in 1989-90 using the Atari 1040ST computer with Steinberg Pro24 Software, Two Yamaha Sound Modules (TX81ZX and TG55) and Ensoniq Mirage Sampler with keyboard. The composition method for each piece evolved from a short improvisation on the Mirage keyboard, recorded in MIDI to the computer. Counterpoint permutations (inversion, reversion, inverted reversion, transpositions) were then applied through the software, distributing the variations of the initial improvisation by other timbres. No other musical material was used.

The popularity of Brazilian music from the 60s, 70s and 80s has experienced quite the renaissance; artists such as Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, Arthur Verocai, Joyce et al, have become household names to an international audience passionate about global sounds. However, even for die-hard fans and collectors of Brazilian music of the past, discovering contemporary Brazilian artists is not always easy, nor accessible. But, if you know where to look, you will see that there is a resurgence well underway that can be epitomised by an exciting new wave of Brazilian artists beginning to break through and gather momentum overseas. It’s with thanks to Sound and Colours, a website devoted to promoting Latin American music and culture, that we can help shine a light on one particular collective, bursting with creativity and camaraderie.
