Auf "Describe" lernt Hannah Jadagu auf die harte Tour, dass Entfernung relativ ist. Nachdem ihr Debütalbum "Aperture" aus dem Jahr 2023 von Medien wie der New York Times und NPR mit begeisterten Kritiken bedacht wurde, führte Jadagus aufblühende Karriere sie weg von ihrer aufblühenden Beziehung in New York. Auf ihrem expansiven zweiten Album setzt sie sich mit dieser Trennung auseinander, findet Verbindungen, die über das Physische hinausgehen, und stärkt dabei ihre eigene Stimme. "Describe" schwingt diese Spannung zwischen dem Wunsch nach Verbindung und dem Verlangen nach Freiraum mit. Gong's Gang , a one-off project for the unique family of true musicians: Giuseppe, Lino, and Rossana Nicolosi; brothers and sisters who knew ''something'' about the Italo-boogie-funk of the early '80s, uncontaminated by the increasingly invasive electronic sound of a yet unappreciated Italo-Disco. Gimme Your Love is a gem, with Rosanna Nicolosi leading the way on vocals and cascading synths and bass blending into an intoxicating mix that should make any funk detective froth with approval. And investigating how it sounds, one discovers a certain similarity to a Charades track; strings sound a bit like Gimme The Funk (written and produced by poet Lotti Golden and Richard Sher both with Chuck Wansley and Kathrine Joyce on Warp 9), mixed in 1982 by John "Jellybean" Benitez, a very close friend of Tony Carrasco, who in 1983 produced, arranged, and mixed 'Gimme Your Love'. The two always kept an eye on each other, even from a distance, staying in touch. However, these assumptions do not detract from this stellar song: whether you prefer the vocal hit or the subtly voiced instrumental, that you can dance at any nighttime party and that absolutely deserves a second chance in the spotlight.

Singer, songwriter, humanitarian, activist, poet, philosopher, artist… ever since music lovers first became aware of Labi Siffre in the early 1970s subsequent generations have continued to discover and be beguiled by his timeless artistry. To this day, his music has endured – seemingly as relevant and contemporary as when first released. It was these qualities that led Madness to cover his 1972 UK hit ‘It Must Be Love’ in the early 1980s, and Eminem and Dr. Dre to sample a substantial chunk of ‘I Got The…’ for the former’s debut hit ‘My Name Is…’ in 1999.

His 1988 classic ’Something Inside) So Strong’ became an anthem twice over when it both soundtracked the struggles of Apartheid South Africa and became a beacon of strength and solace for gay men during the AIDS crisis. More recently, the streaming / TikTok / Insta generation have responded in their hundreds of thousands to ‘Crying Laughing Loving Lying’, as featured in the 2023 cult film ‘The Holdovers’ and to ‘Watch Me’ as included in the ever-iconic ‘Dr Who’. Also, this decade, they might have been drawn into Labi’s world via another film, ‘Companion, or the TV shows ‘Better Call Saul’, ‘Sweetpea’, and ‘The Man Who Fell To Earth’. To bring things bang up to date, they may have been among the legions who liked, shared, and saved ‘Bless The Telephone’ after its unforgettable soundtracking the season 4 finale of bitter-sweet comedy phenomenon ‘Hacks’. ‘The Best Of’ is the definitive Labi Siffre collection for the ages. Featuring the exceptional vocal talents of Merry Clayton, perhaps best known for her blistering performance on the Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter and her own Webster Lewis penned hit Emotion, alongside Jazz vocalist and Earth, Wind & Fire, Ubiquity and Harvey Mason collaborator Silvia Cox, Osunlade's Yoruba Soul remixes have added new dimensions to this track. Hailing from St Louis, USA Osunlade's CV includes writing music for Sesame Street to working with and producing artists as varied as Patti Labelle, Freddie Jackson, Eric Benet, Martha Wash, Salif Keita, Nadirah Shakoor and Cesaria Evora. He started the Yoruba Soul project and label after his move to New York because of 'the continued need to create the music I wanted' and it is this musical freedom that has made him one of the most distinctive music makers, producers, DJs and remixers around today. Mexico-born and based The Funk District has been adding a contemporary spin to funk, soul, disco and Afro for a decade now. His latest takes him to Saint Wax and kicks off with 'Alligator Groove', which is a leggy, strident disco pumper with neat and funky guitar riffs. 'The Reverend' has even fatter drums pumping down and guttural gospel vocals adding emotional intensity. Dive deep into the depths of the underground with Waterworld, the singular and legendary collaboration between two of hip-hop’s most innovative minds — Cage and Tame One — operating together as Leak Bros. Originally released in 2004 on Eastern Conference Records, Waterworld has remained a cult classic: a surreal, grimy, and conceptually bold record that transforms the world of PCP (aka “leak”) into an immersive sonic hallucination.

Woozy textures, gritty East Coast production, and vividly warped lyricism, earned the album its iconic status among underground heads. Across tracks like “G.O.D.,” “Dead Out,” and “Got Wet,” Cage and Tame One embody fictional leak fiends navigating an absurd, paranoiac landscape of drug-fueled delusion. The beats, handled by producers like Mighty Mi and Camu Tao, are hypnotic and lo-fi, dripping with eerie samples and warped loops that match the narcotic haze of the lyrical content.

2xLP+Book. Black & White Splatter vinyl. Between 1975-77, Chicago's southside nightclubs were experiencing dark times. The after-hours routine may have been on the up, but the sound of urban blues was on its way down, getting funkier, heavier, picking up a Zeppelin echo from the British rock scene that had raided its larder. Thankfully, lightening came by way of a lanky white guy skulking from club to club with a camera and strobe light. Chicago photographer Michael Abramson hit Perv's House, Pepper's Hideout, The High Chaparral, The Patio Lounge, and The Showcase Lounge nightly, not to capture the artists on stage but instead popping off a half-dozen rolls every night exclusively on the seldom photographed crowd. Light: On The South Side gathers more than 100 beautiful black and white Abramson images, as Numero shines its own light on yet another dark corner of the musical past. The 132-page hardback book features not just these photos, but an extended and wildly colorful ephemera section, plus an essay by British novelist and Numero fan Nick Hornby. Housed in a gorgeous slipcase with the 12X12 monograph is the 2LP set Pepper's Jukebox, a 17-track compilation of Chicago blues in transition, as heard from both the stage and the Wurlitzer.

»Necessary Fictions« wurde so ein Album voller ambitionierter neuer Entwicklungen – von einer Band, die vollkommen im Reinen mit sich selbst ist: selbstbewusst genug, um sich auf Zusammenarbeit einzulassen, gespannt darauf, wohin die Reise als Nächstes geht, und voller Lust, dabei auch Spaß zu haben. »Mir ist sehr bewusst aufgefallen, wie oft ich im Studio beim Aufnehmen gelächelt habe“, sagt Illingworth, „und ich lächle jetzt gerade, wenn ich nur daran denke. Ich hoffe, diese Energie überträgt sich auf die Menschen.«

Für »Necessary Fictions« konnten sie ihr eigenes Studio in Manchester in einen stimmungsvollen Treffpunkt verwandeln – einen angenehmen Ort, an dem man gerne Zeit verbringt, mit Kunstwerken, Fotografien und anderen Bildern an den Wänden, die als Anregung und Inspiration dienten. Illingworth und Blacka waren dort so gut wie jeden Tag über zwölf Monate hinweg im Jahr 2024; dann kam Scott, der in London lebt, nach Manchester, um mit den beiden festen Größen von GGP zu arbeiten, sobald sie bereit für seinen rhythmischen Input waren. Für Chris Illingworth hingegen bestand ihre Reise darin, weiter in eine Welt vorzudringen, die ihn immer schon angezogen hat, nämlich Synthesizer. »Ich bin früher oft live zu Leuten gegangen, die auftraten, wie Underworld, The Prodigy, Orbital, sogar Nine Inch Nails, und ich habe all ihr Equipment auf der Bühne gesehen, und ein Teil von mir dachte: ‚Verdammt, das sieht nach Spaß aus!‘« Illingworth und Blacka blieben jedoch weiterhin äußerst vorsichtig, was das willkürliche Einfügen von schrillen Sounds betrifft. »Wir wollten nicht, dass es wie ein Gimmick wirkt«, erklärt Chris. »Es musste einen Grund geben – und für uns war das der Wunsch, an bestimmten Stellen den Charakter der Musik zu verändern.«

GoGo Penguin hatte schon immer einen erzählerischen, filmischen Ansatz in ihrer Musik – weit entfernt von simplen Strophe-Refrain-Strukturen, inspiriert von Debussys »Préludes« bis hin zu Underworlds »Pearl’s Girl«. Auf »Necessary Fictions« nimmt diese Klang-Erzählkunst nun deutlich größere Dimensionen an – mit spürbar mehr Raffinesse.
GoGo Penguin graben nun selbstbewusst tief in sich hinein, um ihr bestes Selbst hervorzubringen und andere Talente in ihre harmonische Klangwelt einzubeziehen. Mit »Necessary Fictions« bewegen sich die Drei auf neuen Pfaden – und ja, es ist völlig in Ordnung, dabei zu lächeln.

Spätestens mit Album Nummer 4 (Marching on and on, 2013), einem weiteren absoluten Hit mit Songs wie ,First in Line" und ,Battered & Bruised", war klar: Gimp Fist sind eine Ausnahmeband und haben das gewisse Etwas, das sich die Band aus Norwich bis heute erhalten hat. "Crack" ist radikale Reduktion - Für das zweite Album hat die Berliner Band alle Differenzen und Summen weggestrichen und im Proberaum ein Punk-Album eingespielt, das keine weiteren Genrebezeichnungen braucht. DIY wird hier nicht als Gimmick, sondern als alternativlose Notwendigkeit verstanden - "Crack" entstand ohne Studio, ohne Produzent und ohne Ahnung. SEXBEAT interpretiert Punk geschichtsbewusst mit weitgefächerten Einflüssen, die von Oblivians über Suicide bis hin zu Hot Snakes reichen. Klanglich orientiert man sich am 90er-Jahre-Sound des Dischord-Katalogs: Bass und Drums drücken nach vorne, Gitarre und Gesang kotzen sich dazwischen aus. Die Songs klingen mal stark fragmentiert und mechanisch, mal detailliert ausgearbeitet, aber immer direkt und unverblümt. Textlich geht es um alles, was nervt: kaputte Politik, kaputte Gesellschaft und all die kleinen kaputten Dinge in einem selbst. Referenzen reichen von Gordon Solie Motherf**ers ("Give them a dirty floor for a stage. A five bucks show and I'm stoked for days") bis zu George Orwell ("Four legs good, two legs bad"*) - und am Ende muss sogar Grammy-Preisträger Beck herhalten, denn über allem steht: "You make me wanna try crack".

Label head Moopie and digger extraordinaire Bayu shine light on a set of gems excavated from a curious period of IDM-electronica. The sentimental sequel to their stunning I Won't Have To Think About You compilation, the ten tracks float in melancholic space yet sound beautifully human. Neo Ouija alumni Bauri and Plod meet deFocus' own Lackluster, while Abfahrt Hinwil, the legendary duo of Toytronic boss Chris Cunningham and Martin Haidinger exchange a letter of melody with Multiplex. Includes a previously minidisc-only (!) track by Proem and a superb cut by Merck Records' own MD, aka Jaakko Manninen. Full-colour, reverse-card sleeve with printed insert.

Meek was, of course, one of the most in vogue producers of the first half of the 1960s, providing the soundtrack to the evolution of UK Rock’n'Roll to Swinging London, scoring hits with actors like John Leyton (Johnny Remember Me), showmen like Screaming Lord Sutch and bands like The Outlaws and The Tornados. He also produced a wide stream of R&B and freakbeat 45s that are nowadays hardly sought after by the collectors with the biggest bank accounts.

Joe Meek experimented with all kinds of recording techniques in his home studio, his tricks and gimmicks won his productions chart placement and critical and public acclaim, but none of his projects was so advanced and way out as the avantgarde experimentation showed in his I Hear a New World electronic symphony from 1960. Aided by The Blue Men formed by Rod Freeman (group leader, guitar, vocals), Ken Harvey (tenor sax, vocals), Roger Fiola (Hawaiian Guitar), Chris White (guitar), Doug Collins (bass), Dave Golding (drums) -also known as Rodd-Ken and The Cavaliers- who provided a tight base to his electronically produced sounds, Meek came up with what he envisioned as the soundtrack of the future, the sounds he envisioned were to be heard in outer space. It was too way out for its time, certainly. To the point that of all the opus, only four tracks saw the light of day on a 7" EP released on Triumph, Meeks very own label. It wouldn’t be until 1991 that the whole recordings from the I Hear a New World sessions would see the light of day on a CD issued by the RPM label.

Wah Wah offers a new reissue of this now classic early electronics masterpiece, housed in a beautiful front-laminated back-flapped sleeve and offered as a limited 400 copies only black vinyl version and an ultra-limited 100 copies only transparent purple vinyl. Get yours before they fly!

This is not the end of a dark alleyway in some US city, this is not the bottom of a platform heel in England, this is not the back corner of some dusty drawer at a record fair in Holland.
