A gem-diol is a type of organic compound in chemistry that contains two hydroxyl (–OH) groups attached to the same carbon atom. The term “geminal” refers to the fact that these hydroxyl groups are located on the same carbon, making the compound unique. Gem-diols can be formed through the hydration of aldehydes or ketones and are often unstable, readily converting back to their original carbonyl forms.
