At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers, Schofield (Captain Fantastic’s George MacKay) and Blake (Game of Thrones’ Dean-Charles Chapman) are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers—Blake’s own brother among them. 1917 is directed by Sam Mendes, who wrote the screenplay with Krysty Wilson-Cairns (Showtime’s Penny Dreadful). Rotten Tomatoes critical consensus reads: ""Hard-hitting, immersive, and an impressive technical achievement, 1917 captures the trench warfare of World War I with raw, startling immediacy."" The music to the movie is composed by Thomas Newman (The Shawshank Redemption, American Beauty, Road to Perdition). Newman has received a whopping 15 Oscar bids throughout his career, including one for this epic score. Since the film is designed to be told in one continuous shot from cinematographer Roger Deakins, Newman’s pulse-pounding score often serves as a unique form of editing. For a final time, accompanied by her musicians, Cesária’s voice sweeps us away on yet another voyage of nostalgia. Entitled Mãe Carinhosa, meaning “Mother Tenderness”, this was the very last album by the Queen of Morna that was released posthumously. It includes 13 unused tracks, covering a period that goes from the recording sessions of the album Cabo Verde in 1997 to those of Rogamar in 2006.

From 1995 on, each time Cesária Évora went into the studio, her producer José da Silva got her to record more tracks than were needed for a new album. The aim was to choose a set of songs that fitted together naturally and formed a harmonious record that would delight listeners from start to finish - one of the reasons for Cesária’s commercial success. Some of the surplus tracks were left incomplete for technical reasons or because Cesária so decided. A year after her passing, this extra material was used to produce an album of 13 previously unreleased tracks, beginning with a first, unpublished version of the morna “Sentimento”, recorded in 2003.

Night Prayer is the 2018 studio album by Belgian Flemish artist Jasper Steverlinck, who is also known as the guitarist of rock band Arid. After releasing his debut solo album Songs Of Innocence in 2004, Steverlinck got where he needed to be with Night Prayer. At the essence. No sumptuously packed arrangements. No technological gadgets or needless fuss. Not a single fashionable beat left or right. On Night Prayer, it’s all about songwriting in its purest form. No poetic metaphors, but straightforward lyrics and unapologetic emotions.

Together with producer Jean Blaute he recorded 14 stripped down songs, which he all sang in one take.

Dutch rock band Shocking Blue was at their peak in the 60s and 70s and gained major cross-Atlantic success. The band was founded in 1967 and is most known for their single ""Venus"" (with which they became the first Dutch band ever to reach the first spot on the American Billboard Hot 100). The band had a series of subsequent hits and their influence reached well beyond their generation. Music On Vinyl proudly presents their legendary Scorpio’s Dance album as a 2024 remastered edition from the original 1970 mix by Robbie van Leeuwen. It includes none less than four bonus tracks that were not featured on the original LP: ""Send Me A Postcard"", ""Mighty Joe"", ""Hello Darkness"" & ""Pickin’ Tomatoes"". Black, Gold & Green was the first of three albums Ken Boothe would record together with producer Lloyd Charmers and takes his Memphis-via-Kingston aesthetic to the next level. Some of the best soul singing of his career can be heard here on numbers such as ""Out of Love,"" ""Missing You,"" and the gritty ballad ""Second Chance."" His singing as being in the same kind of soul groove as the late and great Otis Redding. Ken’s tradition, though, is based in the powerful religious messages reflected in the native Jamaican religion. Black, Gold & Green includes some serious social-political material, and these heavy tones permeate every note of this album. Comparsa is the third studio release by the musical group Deep Forest. The group consists of the duo Michel Sanchez and Éric Mouquet and are known by composing a style of world music, mixing ethnic with electronic sounds and beats. Comparsa features a pronounced focus on Latin and Caribbean grooves, provided by musicians from Cuba, Belize, Mexico and Madagascar, among other places. It became #8 French export album of 1998 and was certified Platinum by SNEP Export Awards, with more than 500,000 albums sold outside France.

After six years, the American alternative rock band Buffalo Tom are back in 2024 with their tenth full-length studio album, titled Jump Rope. During the lockdown, the band kept on writing and sent each other ideas for arrangements and parts, which resulted in a sizeable backlog of song ideas. A sort of direction made itself apparent from the ideas they were trading; most of the songs called for an acoustic, quieter production. Eventually, emerging from their basements, they slowly got to actually working together on the songs in the same room, rehearsing quietly (especially for the super-loud Buffalo Tom), with acoustic guitar. After giving most of the songs a good amount of overdubs and a lot of electric guitars, the songs evolved into this beautiful and thrilling new Buffalo Tom album: Jump Rope. Jump Rope features the singles “New Girl Singing”, ""Helmet"" and ""Autumn Letter"" and is available on black vinyl.

"Cedar Walton was one of the most influential hard bop pianists and became well known as the pianist with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Bassist Ron Carter and drummer Jack DeJohnette both gained fame early in their careers for their associations with two different Miles Davis groups. This jazz album from 1984 was the only recording that these three jazz legends did together and was created on December 22-23 in 1983. The album is also known as The All American Trio. Cedar Walton / Ron Carter / Jack DeJohnette contains newly written liner-notes by jazz journalist/historian Scott Yanow."

In 2007, the American rock band Puddle Of Mudd released their third studio album Famous. It debuted at #27 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and contains some of their most popular tracks to date. The single “Psycho” hit the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Modern Rock charts in the United States. Much Afraid is the second studio album by American Christian rock band Jars of Clay and was released in 1997. Following the charting success of the band's debut album, Much Afraid earned the band a Grammy Award for Best Pop/Contemporary Gospel Album. It debuted at #8 on the Billboard 200 and was certified Platinum. The album features the multi-instrumentalist Greg Wells, who went on to produce OneRepublic, Katy Perry, Pink, and Rufus Wainwright, playing drums and bass guitar on almost every song; he also co-wrote ""Tea And Sympathy"" and the single ""Crazy Times"". The tracks ""Fade to Grey"" and ""Frail"" were both from the group's 1994 demo recording Frail. All other tracks from that demo appeared on the debut album Jars Of Clay in 1995. Santana III is viewed by many as the band's commercial and creative highpoint. The band sounds darker, rawer, and more eager with the doubling up on guitar of Schon's Rock 'n' Roll sensibilities and Santana's ecstatic high notes and soulful fills. Quill was a Boston-based rock band that had national exposure when they played the Woodstock festival in August of 1969.

The quintet got together in 1967 and played New England and New York over the next few years, getting

some positive regional press for their combination of high- wattage rock with elements of psychedelia and jazz,

and what would later be identified as performance art. Most of the songwriting was handled by John and Dan Cole,

who tended to deliver fairly complex pieces that lent themselves to elaborate performances, sometimes involving some heavy audience participation as well.

"King Yellowman is the 1984 Columbia Records debut album by Yellowman. The artist, whose real name is Winston Foster, is a Jamaican reggae and dancehall artist who first became popular in Jamaica in the 80s. "The Modulations released their album It's Rough Out Here in 1975. This album featured the singles ""Rough Out Here”, “I Can’t Fight Your Love”, and the title track, along with other soulful tracks that explored similar themes of struggle and resilience. The singles received considerable airplay and managed to chart on Billboard’s R&B single Chart. While the group never achieved great mainstream commercial success, they garnered a dedicated following among soul music enthusiasts for their emotive vocals and heartfelt lyrics. The Modulations recorded extensively with MFSB, the house band of the famed record label Philadelphia International. These sessions yielded to this album It's Rough Out Here, which is considered a gem of 1970s soul music, showcasing The Modulations' talent and ability to capture the essence of everyday life through their music. The group reached the pinnacle of its career with an appearance on Don Cornelius’ popular TV show Soul Train in 1976. It’s Rough Out Here is being reissued for the first time in almost 50 years and is available as a limited edition of 500 copies on yellow coloured vinyl. "

Edwin Birdsong’s self titled album was released in 1978 on Philadelphia International Records at the height of the Disco craze. By this time, Edwin was a major player at PIR and a talented songwriter and producer as well. Birdsong’s vision hits the mark as the album boasts several gems that became dance floor classics, especially in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, LA and San Francisco. “Cola Bottle Baby”, “Kunta Dance” and “Goldmine” are all hard hitting funks gems that kick in hard and are ready for partying. Daft Punk sampled the hitsong "Cola Bottle Baby" in "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger". The sexy “Lollipop” is years ahead of its time and the irresistible “Freaky Deaky Sities” and “Phiss-Phizz” both became huge club hits, despite not having charted on any of the Billboard charts. Even though the album missed the charts, it became something of a hot item for disco/soul music collectors. Culled from original state-owned television and radio sources in Belgium, Denmark, and France, this 5 LP box set spans three northern European festival performances over the course of nine days in October-November 1967. The audio shows consist entirely of previously unreleased or previously only bootlegged material. Miles' Quintet lineup of 1965 to '68 is acknowledged as one of the high reference points in 20th century jazz, and its influence continues to reverberate in small group jazz today, and it was the quintet's live performances, as they evolved into Miles' ideal of a ""leaderless"" jamming ensemble, that truly immortalized them.

These are four historic performances from the Fillmore East and West in 1970, at a time when Miles Davis was single-handedly bringing Jazz into the commercial Rock era. In their unedited form, all selections are previously unissued. The searing white heat of these concerts, originally issued in severely edited form, are now made whole. This set includes several bonus tracks like Wayne Shorter's “Paraphernalia” and “Footprints”, an early version of “Miles Runs The Voodoo Down” plus a rare encore performance of Bitches Brew’s “Spanish Key”.

The visionary Bill Graham had booked Miles on a bill with The Grateful Dead at the Fillmore West and with fellow Columbia artist Laura Nyro in June 1970. The latter recordings are the earliest documented live performances of Miles’s band when he hired two keyboardists--Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett, along with saxophonist Steve Grossman who had replaced Wayne Shorter. The rest of the rhythm section--keyboardist Corea, bassist Dave Holland, drummer Jack DeJohnette and percussionist Airto Moreira--were in the backbone of this band throughout this explosive period.

Curated by Carlos Santana, this set features fascinating firsthand accounts and profound insight into a seismic shift in American society, music, and culture.
